Our family is concerned it is not safe to have a short layover there.

LOL. I suppose they watch Fox news do they? Or they looked on a map thats 6 inches high and saw its only an inch away from Iraq? Or what? Anyway its ridiculous.

I'm curious too- why layover in Moscow if you're going to Greece? That would be like traveling to New York from Texas with a layover in Seattle! :-)

Seems to be no problem for Edward Snowden?

safe air travel llc

There are two larger international airports in Moscow.

Safety is no concern at all, especially in the very controlled environment of an airport. If you have no visa, you will be unable to leave the airport, anyway.

If you fly via Sheremetyevo there is not too much to do. If you fly via Domodedovo the airport is ok.

Relax and enjoy your trip.

"Seems to be no problem for Edward Snowden?" LOL

I believe the cold war is over too.

You'll be surprised but it almost does. Distance between Washington and Moscow is significantly less than between Washington and Athens once you realize that Earth is not as flat as the map.

You'll be surprised but it almost does

Well, I wouldn't be surprised, that's why I asked :-)

My brother and his family had a boring 8 hour wait at the airport while coming from Kazahkstan via Moscow back to the UK. As they didn't have a Russian visa, they couldn't leave the airport.

My company does a lot of business with Russia and, while I've never been, many, many of my colleagues have and no one has ever raised a concern with the Moscow airport, or traveling around Russia for that matter. Tell your family to stop reading the papers and stop worrying.

There are two main reasons for this, one is the very small number of non-stop flights from the US to Greece, and the other is the possibility of connecting onto a flight straight to your ultimate destination in Greece, where that isn't Athens.

However most people connect in Paris,Frankfurt, Munich, Amsterdam, Rome or London, because these cities have more flights from more places in the US and to Greece than Moscow does. As a result the flights via Moscow have to be priced to attract travellers to this less convenient route.

The other cities also offer another significant benefit. All except London are in the Schengen area, as is Greece, and you actually enter the Schengen area at the first port of entry, so if you want an extended stopover in another interesting city, or need to get landside in the event of flight disruption, there's no problem at all. They also share a currency with Greece.

London doesn't have the same advantages, but US citizens don't require a visa or visa waiver to enter the UK, and there are between 5 and 12 flights a day from Heathrow alone to various Greek airports.(Depending on day of week and season) and almost uncountable flights from the US.

Moscow however has relatively infrequent flights from the US and relatively infrequent flights to Greece. The three Moscow airports don't help here, because you need a Russian visa to connect between them - in total there are plenty of flights , just not all from the same airport. If there are flight disruptions you will wish you had a Russian visa as otherwise you're stuck inside the terminal for as long as it takes. But getting a visa isn't that hard if planned in advance and Moscow is a fascinating city to visit.

safe air travel llc

Just to add my two cents to the excellent overview above:

Actually, if your onward flight is delayed so much that your connection exceeds 24hrs you can get a transit visa right at the airport.

I'm a bit shocked by post 7....... Are you sure the earth isn't flat?

We flew over Moscow and Warsaw on the trip from Hong Kong to Frankfurt. I was disappointed as it was night time and the view was terrible.

10 Air Travel Safety Tips (Ultimate Guide For 2023)

Table of Contents

Airline travel is one of the safest methods of transportation on earth. All airlines, including every staff and crew member, will always put safety first and it is the top priority for everyone in the aviation industry.

I can attest to that as I have worked in the aviation industry as a pilot for over 20 years. I have never once seen safety, not a top priority.

Air travel safety does not come without its challenges, however. Huge amounts of money and training are involved in certifying aircrew members to ensure your safety as a passenger on board a plane. Sometimes it may not seem that the aircrew has your best interest in mind, but trust me they do!

There are many things that you as a passenger can do to help the safety of yourself and others on board the plane. In this post, I will show you 10 Air Travel Safety Tips that you can use to ensure your flight is more comfortable and safe.

Is Airline Travel Safe?

This is a question that gets asked so often. Everyone who travels is always thinking about it. First-time air travelers often wonder if airline travel is safe ─ and just how safe is it?

The answer is, airline travel is the safest mode of transportation available. If you look at the numbers, flying is much safer than driving. It might feel more dangerous though because plane crashes are more catastrophic, they kill more people, and play into our fears of flying. Car crashes, on the other hand, occur daily and are constantly happening and spread the losses over more time, making their effects much less noticeable.

According to thenational.ae , globally in 2017, 4.1 billion passengers traveled by air, with a total of just 50 fatalities from accidents involving scheduled commercial flights.

Also according to IATA , International Air Transport Association, in 2015 there was one commercial jet accident per 4.5 million flights.

So is airline travel safe? Yes, it is.

Rules For Airplane Travel

There are many rules and regulations that must be followed when traveling by airplane. Not only do the legal rules need to be followed, but each airline will have its own guidelines and safety regulations as well. The policies and procedures could be different from one airline to the next.

My suggestion is to review the specific airlines’ guidelines prior to travel. Most of this information is available online, but you can always contact customer service via telephone.

I recently wrote an article explaining some pre-travel checklist items that will help you prepare. Also, more information regarding baggage limits, first-time flyers tips, and other air travel advice can be found here.

Here are 10 air travel safety tips that you should follow when traveling on all airlines.

#1. Flight Attendant Passenger Briefing – Safety Procedures

safe air travel llc

If you only end up listening to one of my tips on the list, hopefully, it’s this one. I can’t say this enough. It is so important that every passenger on board listens to the flight attendants passenger safety briefing.

I have been witness to thousands of passengers completely ignoring the safety briefings, despite the announcements that require you to do so. This briefing is something that only takes a few minutes of your time and could be critical in a life and death situation. Besides, what else are you doing anyway while sitting on the plane waiting to take off?

If you are sitting in the emergency exit row, the flight attendants will give you a special briefing on how to operate the door in the event of an emergency. They will only allow passengers who are willing and capable of accepting this responsibility to sit in this row.

Paying attention to the briefing and reading the safety card in the seat pouch just may save your life or someone else’s in the event of an emergency. As an airline pilot, I know the crew members will appreciate you paying attention. Avoid sleeping, playing games, reading the paper or talking during the briefing. Your life may depend on it!

#2. Keep Your Seat Belt Fastened At All Times

If you listen to the safety briefing, you will notice that you must keep your seat belt on at all times. Yes even when the seat belt sign is turned off, which only the pilots can do .

It is possible that the aircraft could experience turbulence unexpectedly, and serious injury could result if your belt is not fastened. Not only that, but serious injury to others is possible if you are not secure.

#3. Dress Properly

Not many people think of this but it is important to dress properly while traveling on an airplane. Being comfortable will help you move easier if needed, and also certain materials like cotton are known to protect your skin.

Also avoid high heel shoes, for obvious reasons. Not a great idea to be running from an airplane or going down an evacuation slide in high heels!

Here are 10 things you should never wear on board a plane .

#4. Be Aware Of Your Location On The Plane

safe air travel llc

As part of the safety briefing mentioned earlier, you should always know where your seat is located in relation to the aircraft doors. Most large airliners will have emergency exits at the front, middle and back of the plane. Have a look to see which exit is closest to you in the event of an evacuation.

Also, know that the aircraft floor has illuminated lighting directions to point you in the direction of an exit if the visibility is reduced.

#5. Avoid Alcohol

It is very easy to become dehydrated on an aircraft. The longer the flight, the worse it can be. Make sure to drink lots of liquids. Water is hands down the best choice. If you can, try to avoid coffee, tea and fruit juices.

Alcoholic drinks are a poor choice when flying for many reasons. They don’t help combat dehydration. They also have a stronger effect in the thinner air of an aircraft at altitude. I have seen it far too many times, someone will have a few drinks in the air and it leads to a bad situation.

Alcohol also makes it tougher when trying to avoid jet lag.

#6. Have Respect For The Crew Members

I honestly can’t believe how many times I have seen aircrew members being treated poorly by passengers. Some people just have no respect for the people in charge of looking after them and saving their life when called upon.

Being rude, incompliant with rules, offensive, or harmful has no place on board an airplane. The airlines have strict policies in place to deal with passengers who behave badly. Most times it ends up in an arrest from police. This type of behavior is not acceptable; it has huge safety implications and won’t be tolerated in any way.

#7. Keep Heavy Objects Out Of The Overhead Bins

safe air travel llc

This is something to be aware of in the event of turbulence, that the overhead bins may accidentally open. This could cause injury to you or others around you. The overhead bins are for storing carry on items, not large heavy items. Larger items should be placed in the aircraft as checked luggage.

#8. Wear Air Compression Socks

If you are traveling on a long flight, you can periodically get up and move around to stretch. This is good for your health. It’s normal for your body to struggle with good blood circulation on longer flights. Walk up and down the aisles. Walk to the bathroom and back. You can even just stand in the aisle next to your row for a period of time. Even just doing some stretching or twisting movements in your seat will help. All these will reduce discomfort from swollen legs and feet and help prevents poor circulation problems and deep vein thrombosis.

Additionally, to help to prevent this, I highly recommend a pair of air travel compression socks . These will help prevent swelling and blood clotting on a long flight. They will help keep your circulation going. Perfect for swollen calves and ankles. Taking a little extra time to walk around the airport on your layovers or between flights just to get some extra exercise even if you don’t feel a need to do it can pay off towards the end of a really long journey.

#9. Oxygen Masks

Properly knowing how to use your oxygen mask is crucial. Every seat on board the plane should have an oxygen mask available above your head. This mask will automatically fall down in the event of an unequal pressure inside the aircraft cabin.

The first step is to always secure your own mask first before helping other people around you. This is very important due to the fact that you will not be able to help anyone if you are incapacitated. This will be demonstrated during the safety briefing as well.

#10 Emergency Evacuations

In the unlikely event of an emergency evacuation, it is very important to follow the procedures that are outlined by the crew members. This includes leaving behind your personal belongings like luggage.

Trying to get your carry-on baggage from under the seat or the overhead bin delays the evacuation. This puts yourself and others at risk.

As you can see, there are many things that you can do in order to stay safe on board the airplane. Following some basic rules will go along way in keeping yourself and others safe. I recommend following these 10 air travel safety tips for all flights you might travel on. The rules apply to everyone.

Hopefully, you enjoyed this guide and found it helpful.

Is it your first time flying? Or maybe the news has you concerned about your upcoming flight. Regardless of whether you might be asking yourself, “How safe are airplanes, or how safe is air travel?” Whatever the news or friends have predisposed you to believe, the short answer is: it’s easily the safest way to travel.

How Safe Are Airplanes?

Luckily, commercial airlines are regulated by the FAA - that’s the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA is an agency that is under the United States Department of Transportation that is responsible for the regulation and oversight of civil aviation within the United States.

In Europe, the EASA , European Aviation Safety Agency, is the equivalent.

Because of these agencies, consumers like you can see safety statistics by modes of transportation, accidents, fatalities, and more across all modes of transportation and every commercial flight.

Follow the link to see a breakdown of commercial airplane safety data .

If you don’t want to comb through the data, just know this: There are 40,000 flights every single day, carrying over 2.6M passengers to their home or destination. In 2016, there were 0 fatalities, and 0 fatal plane crashes, with only 31 actual accidents across over 8,000,000 flights.

The odds are in your favor, but what’s better than luck is the safety mechanisms and designs in place to keep you safe. Read on to the next section to learn about the designs and mechanisms engineered into airplanes that help keep you safe.

Why Makes Airplanes So Safe?

Ground proximity warning system.

The Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS), or is sometimes referred to as Terrain Awareness Warning System (TAWS), is a system that alerts pilots if there a danger of flying into the ground, water, or into an obstacle, such as a mountain.

These systems became required in 1974 by the FAA when studies were done showing that when a properly functioning airplane under the control of a fully qualified and certified crew, had flown into terrain with no apparent awareness on the part of the crew.

These types of accidents are categorized as Controlled Flight Into Terrain (CFITs) and had reached a historical high in 1973, calling for the implementation of the safety system.

Following implementation, large jet transport accidents attributable to CFIT, fell to an average of only 1 every 2 years for the United States . Far below the rate the rest of the world was experiencing.

Since the implementation of the system, it has continued to be improved over the years with updates, new technologies, and new procedures in place to thwart these accidents.

Traffic Alert & Collision Avoidance System

If you’ve ever been worried about a mid-air collision while flying, hopefully, this safety feature will assure you of your safety. The Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), or sometimes referred to as the Airborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS), is a system of controls that essentially provides a second set of eyes for pilots and air traffic control.

However, this set of eyes works in all directions, using radar technology. These systems do not rely on ground communications to operate. Instead, they communicate with other-transponder equipped aircraft where the threat of a mid-air collision is possible.

These systems began development in the late ’60s, and early ’70s after a mid-air collision over the Grand Canyon in 1956 sparked the realization for such a system.

The system continues to be developed, and updates are implemented around the world in passenger airline, cargo, business, and government aircraft.

On January 1st, 2003, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which can be equated to an international version of the FAA or EASA, mandated the use of TCAS II by all planes with a takeoff weight of more than 15,000kg, or with an authorization to carry more than 30 passengers.

Wind Shear Warning System

First off, what is wind shear? Generally speaking, wind shear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance.

If you’ve ever walked around a big city where the air seems calm, there’s no sign of rain and the sun is shining, only to turn a corner around a large building and get blasted by a gust of wind - that’s essentially what a wind shear is.

This isn’t a problem if it’s happening to you over a distance of 10-15 feet; you don’t have a wide coverage area and aren’t meant to fly. However, on a larger scale, when a plane is accelerating for takeoff or trying to decelerate to land, this can be a huge issue and has caused many accidents.

Pilots are trained to recognize and perform maneuvers that allow him or her to escape a wind shear; however, knowing that wind shear is coming allows the pilot to be better prepared.

In 1971 the FAA created a task force specifically for investigating the various activities to detect and alert for potential wind shears on the ground and in the aircraft. Additionally, improvements in forecasting and reporting the information were improved with the primary goal of avoidance.

Over time systems and processes were developed and improved to aid in the detection of wind shears. The National Weather Service played a role reporting while upgrades were made to existing ground-detecting tools.

Licensed and Certified Pilots

While warning systems and all these advancements in technology are great, computers still cannot replace a human being for the more complex aspects of flying, let alone 2.

The time-cost to become a commercial pilot is far from cheap, let alone the monetary cost. When an airline hires a pilot, it is a massive investment in that person. The cost of the pilot himself, the cost of the plane, the liability of passengers, and the FAA’s strict regulations make the hiring and training process lengthy.

In the United States, co-pilots are required to have 1,500 hours of total flight time before becoming a pilot. To put that in perspective, that’s almost 63 days worth of time in the aircraft with a more experienced, senior pilot.

According to AAA , the average American spends an average of 310 hours in their car over the course of a year.

Before becoming full-fledged pilots, trainees must go through a formal training through an FAA-approved pilot school for certification. Then trainees must go through a multitude of additional courses and certifications for multi-engine privileges, instrument ratings, and pass over a dozen different exams.

Additionally, pilots must be in excellent physical health and pass a number of health examinations. Ongoing training is required by almost all major airlines and the FAA.

As you can see, becoming a commercial pilot is a rigorous journey and is well beyond the scope of this article. At the bare minimum, know that your pilot has spent his fair share of time in the cockpit and made the personal commitment for this to be his or her full-time career.

Airplane Maintenance

Airplanes are massive investments for both the manufacturer and the company purchasing them. Most major commercial airplanes have a lifespan of 25-30 years before they’re ‘retired.’ Proper maintenance is a must to ensure an aircraft reaches its full lifespan safely.

For a large fleet of aircraft, like those operated by the big commercial players - American, Delta, United, Southwest, etc. these aircraft go through regularly scheduled maintenance checks. Although not as simple, this is similar to how you regularly change the oil in your car, check your tires for excessive wear, check for odd noises, etc.

For example, American Airlines operates its primary maintenance facility out of Tulsa, Oklahoma . Delta’s is located in Atlanta, Georgia . All of these major airlines have training programs maintenance technicians must go through before being allowed to work on any aircraft.

While most airplanes fly into the company’s primary maintenance headquarters, some airplanes are maintained at other locations.

Manufacturer Testing

Lastly, we cannot forget about the manufacturer who performs regular testing on its product to ensure the highest quality standards are met.

Boeing is one of the largest airplane manufacturers in the world and provides aircraft fleets for nearly every single major commercial airline. Most notably, their 737 and 747 models are two of the largest aircraft people may ever fly on.

Apart from regulatory requirements, manufacturers have their own set of stringent requirements to meet. Boeing, for example, designs its planes to withstand 150% of the highest load an airplane might encounter in commercial service.

A Boeing 737 might be rated to carry up to 175,000lbs at take off. This includes the weight of the plane, say 90,000lbs, and the weight of the fuel, say 40,000 lbs. This leaves an additional 45,000 lbs for the crew, passengers, luggage, etc.

Realistically, that 175,000lb rating will likely never be reached. However, if it were, the plane would still be okay, as it’s able to carry up to 262,500lbs fully. This extra margin of protection gives the pilots the ability to push the plane a little harder in the event of an emergency.

Additionally, fatigue tests, structural strength testing, and validation tests are examples of more of the rigorous quality control manufacturers, like Boeing, place on their airplanes. Under fatigue testing, airplanes are tested up to 3 times their lifespan for wear and tear to ensure durability.

Are older airplanes safe?

Yes, they are, even though safety standards evolve, that doesn’t mean older airplanes get ‘grandfathered’ in. Instead, these planes have to be upgraded to meet the standards or be decommissioned.

Is the 747 safer than the 737?

Comparing the safety records of a 747 to a 737 is like comparing apples to oranges. One may be safer than the other in a particular scenario based on statistics, but that doesn’t make it a safer ‘overall’ airplane.

There are too many factors to take into consideration the safest airplane. However, when looking at the statistics, almost all airplanes show incredibly high safety records, in part due to the regulations set by the FAA.

Can the wings of an airplane break off?

Under normal or even extreme conditions, it is implausible. Recall that airplanes undergo stress testing. Part of that stress testing is to ensure that the airplanes can withstand forces they will likely never experience in an actual flight. So technically, yes, the wings can break off, but it’s not going to happen during an actual flight.

You may see the wings of the airplane shake and move in a way that looks like they’re going to break, but fear not - they’re designed that way. They have to be flexible, so they don’t crack or break.

Can the door to an airplane be opened while in flight?

No, it’s virtually impossible unless the Incredible Hulk is on your flight, and he might even have a tough time doing it. Once the cabin is pressurized, the force required to open the door is too high for a human, or the Hulk, to open.

In the event of an emergency, the pilots will depressurize the cabin when it’s safe to do so. If the cabin is depressurized at a high altitude, all the oxygen will get sucked right out of the plane. Hence the reason oxygen masks are provided in the event the cabin does lose pressure.

Can the window of an airplane break while in flight?

In short, yes, but again, only under extreme and rare circumstances. The only way that a windows airplane could be broken while in flight would be if a piece of the aircraft itself broke off and flew into the window.

However, it has happened only a handful of times and is related more to engine failures than the window failing. Even if the window does break, there is a backup built into to help keep the cabin pressurized. Essentially something would have to fly into the same exact spot twice for it to become an issue.

On top of everything already mentioned in the article, remember - all of these safety features also have built-in redundancies. Meaning, that even if the first safety feature fails, which it rarely does, there is a backup, and sometimes even a second back up to ensure the passengers and crew are safe.

The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) on Thursday warned of frauds in which scammers falsely claim to be an authorised firm based in the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC) and regulated by the DFSA. In such scams, the scammers impersonate or clone the legitimate authorised firm by: > Setting up a fake website. The fake website often looks identical to the real website of the legitimate company. The website addresses are also similar with one or two small differences. In one example, the legitimate company's website address followed the formula "AB.com", whereas the fake website address used "A-B.com", i.e. with the addition of a hyphen. > Using the name, letterhead and logo of the legitimate firm in emails, correspondence and documents. However, the contact details are changed so that potential investors are diverted from the legitimate firm to the scammers. > Using the name and logo of authorities who regulate the legitimate firm, such as the DFSA, in emails, correspondence and documents. > Impersonating real employees from the legitimate firm and/or from the regulatory authorities. > Arranging meetings in the DIFC but, instead of meeting in the legitimate firm's offices, the scammers will instead meet potential investors in a coffee shop. One indicator as to whether or not a financial services company is genuine is the quality of the grammar and spelling in the documents of the company. Often scammers will use documentation which contains incorrect terminology, spelling errors and poor grammar. Some examples are where the scammers have: > referred to their firm as being "fully fletched" whereas the correct term is "fully fledged" > cited legislation which does not exist; namely, the "DIFC security service act" > named a person with the official-sounding role of the DIFC "Secretary General" in some parts of the document or, the DIFC "General Secretary" in other parts. Both the person and role does not exist > Named another person with the role of the DFSA "Registrar-General". Both the person and role does not exist. If you have any concerns about the authenticity of any correspondence or documents that purport to be issued by the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), DFSA or a DFSA regulated firm, you should direct your concerns to the DIFC on Tel:+971 4 362 2222 and to the DFSA via the DFSA Complaints function on: COMPLAINTS The DFSA advises you not to reply to any communications regarding such scams, and under no circumstances should you transfer any money to any party involved in the scams. The DFSA has a page on its website devoted to alerts in relation to scams, including scams which misuse the name of the DFSA and/or the DIFC.  All Alerts issued by the DFSA may be accessed by going to: ALERTS The DFSA has also issued warnings and guidance about the common types of scams, including Advance Fee scams, perpetrated on consumers. For more information on these scams please go to: HOW TO AVOID BEING SCAMMED The DFSA encourages consumers to refer to the list of regulated Firms and Authorised Individuals licensed by the DFSA that is available on the DFSA's PUBLIC REGISTER

FAA lifts ground stop of Alaska Airlines flights after system issues resolved

safe air travel llc

The Federal Aviation Administration lifted a ground stop that applied to all Alaska Airlines and subcarrier flights after about an hour Wednesday. The order was first instituted because of a software issue at the airline.

"This morning we experienced an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance. Out of an abundance of caution, we requested a ground stop for all Alaska and Horizon flights, which was instituted at approximately 7:30 a.m. PT," Alaska said in a statement to USA TODAY. "The issue was mitigated and the ground stop for Alaska and Horizon flights expired at 8:30 a.m. PT. We have begun releasing flights. Residual delays are expected throughout the day. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or the Alaska App prior to heading to the airport."

The ground stop did not apply to Alaska flights operated by regional carrier SkyWest.

Although Alaska said it anticipates some delays throughout its system Wednesday as a result of the ground stop, as of 11:50 a.m. ET, the airline was not reporting any cancellations, according to FlightAware .

House and Senate negotiate bill to help FAA add more air traffic controllers and safety inspectors

C ongressional negotiators have agreed on a $105 billion bill designed to improve the safety of air travel after a series of close calls between planes at the nation’s airports.

House and Senate lawmakers said Monday that the bill will increase the number of air traffic controllers and require the Federal Aviation Administration to use new technology designed to prevent collisions between planes on runways.

Lawmakers agreed to prohibit airlines from charging extra for families to sit together, and they tripled maximum fines for airlines that violate consumer laws. However, they left out other consumer protections proposed by the Biden administration.

The bill was negotiated by Republicans and Democrats who lead the House and Senate committees overseeing the FAA, which has been under scrutiny since it approved Boeing jets that were quickly involved in two deadly crashes in 2018 and 2019. The legislation will govern FAA operations for the next five years.

The Senate could vote on the 1,069-page measure as early as next week, but it could be delayed if senators try to attach unrelated bills. FAA is operating under a temporary authorization that expires May 10, and Congress might need to pass another extension.

The House approved its version of the bill last year, but a Senate committee approved a different version in February after fights over several provisions, including ones dealing with the training and retirement age of pilots.

In the end, negotiators dropped a House provision raising the mandatory retirement age for airline pilots to 67; it will remain at 65. Both chambers had already sidestepped a highly charged issue by narrowly rejecting a proposal backed by small airlines to let aspiring pilots count more time spent in simulators instead of flying planes toward reaching minimum experience standards.

The FAA has a shortage of about 3,000 air traffic controllers nationwide. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., chair of the Senate Commerce Committee and one of the negotiators, said the final bill shows “that aviation safety and stronger consumer standards are a big priority .... It is also the first major upgrade to air traffic controller hiring in decades.”

One of the most contentious issues in the bill turns out to be a provision that would allow an additional 10 flights per day longer than 1,250 miles to and from Reagan Washington National Airport, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Delta Air Lines and some Western lawmakers wanted to add 56 flights. The House said no, but a Senate committee approved 10 flights, or five round trips — and that made it into the final bill.

"We were pushing for more, but if we get five, we’ll take five,” Delta CEO Ed Bastian said in an interview this month.

United Airlines — which dominates less-convenient Dulles Airport, 25 miles west of the nation's capital — opposed the idea. Lawmakers from Virginia and Maryland said Monday they were “deeply frustrated” at the provision, arguing that National is already too busy. They pointed to a close call there between two planes earlier in April, calling it a “flashing red warning light."

Lawmakers in both chambers rejected a proposal from consumer groups to give state officials power to regulate airlines, but the administration separately cut a deal letting 15 mostly Democratic states help the U.S. Transportation Department enforce federal consumer-protection rules.

Some other provisions in the bill:

— The Transportation Department will create a “dashboard” so consumers can compare seat sizes on all the airlines, but lawmakers stopped short of setting a minimum size.

— The bill would write into law that airlines must pay a refund to customers for flight delays – at three hours for a domestic flight and six for an international one. The Transportation Department issued a similar regulation last week, but laws are harder for future administrations to change.

— When airlines offer travel credits instead of a refund, the credits must be valid for least five years.

— Maximum civil penalties against airlines that violate consumer-protection laws would triple, from $25,000 to $75,000.

— Starting next year, new airline planes must have cockpit voice recorders capable of saving 25 hours of audio, up from the current two hours, to help investigators. This won’t apply retroactively to planes already in use.

— Requires the FAA to increase oversight of aircraft repair shops in other countries, a key demand in recent years by U.S. airline unions, which claim the foreign shops aren’t as safe.

— Requires the FAA to create a new system for tracking and locating high-altitude balloons. This became an issue in February 2023 when a Chinese balloon drifted across the entire U.S. The military shot it down off South Carolina, but not before Secretary of State Antony Blinken canceled a high-level visit to China in response to the incident.

Mary Clare Jalonick in Washington contributed to this report. Koenig reported from Dallas.

29 April 2024

Welcome aboard the saf journey.

© Air France-KLM

In line with its decarbonisation roadmap, Airbus is joining forces with airlines to increase the use of sustainable aviation fuel for employee business travel.

Over the last decade, Airbus has gradually introduced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) into its company operations. In 2023, Airbus reached its goal to reach 10% SAF in its fuel mix. By using the alternative fuel in aircraft deliveries to customers, in test flights, for Beluga transport and employee business travel, Airbus was able to reduce its 2023 CO 2 emissions by 23,587 tonnes.

Still, there is a considerable amount that can be achieved to develop the SAF market. Airlines are supporting the effort by proposing SAF in business travel procurement. Airbus is taking advantage of the growing offer to make corporate travel flights powered with SAF available to employees.

Zooming in on employee travel

With the aim to reduce the CO 2 footprint of employees, Airbus is working with several airlines to purchase SAF for business travel. It’s a strategic move that aligns with Airbus’ ambitions to reduce the company’s Scope 3 emissions.

Thanks to such innovative SAF incentive programmes, we are able to walk the talk in reducing the environmental impact of our business travel and empower employees to take part in the effort of meeting Airbus’ CO 2 emission reduction goals.

Raphael DUFLOS, Head of Corporate Services General Procurement

In 2022 and 2023, Airbus signed agreements with airlines Volotea and Air Corsica to have SAF onboard for internal charter flights connecting Toulouse to Finkenwerder, Germany, and Toulouse to Nantes and Saint-Nazaire in France.

In order to further develop this practice, Airbus and Air France-KLM signed a first agreement in late 2023 adding routes between Paris and Toulouse as well as Paris and Marseille.

But as SAF is not yet available at every airport, Airbus uses a Book and Claim process. This means that the flights are not necessarily powered with SAF. Rather, the purchased SAF goes into the fuel system at an airport close to a SAF production facility. This process ensures a more efficient lifecycle. The SAF purchased by Airbus is tracked and verified to allocate the correct carbon emissions factors.

New routes, more SAF with Air France KLM

After a successful pilot in 2023, Air France-KLM and Airbus are pursuing their collaboration with a 2024 “SAF fares agreement”. Airbus will now purchase SAF options for employee business travel connecting Hamburg, Madrid, Marseille, Munich and Toulouse to Paris.

The airline will provide Airbus with a comprehensive report of SAF consumption and an estimation of the CO 2 footprint of Airbus’ employee travel on the five selected routes.

On the other hand, the Deluxe Plan — the most comprehensive option — adds such extras as missed connection coverage, security evacuation, travel inconvenience benefits and more. It also boosts high limits for essential coverages.

Last-minute travelers can opt for the Pack N' Go Plan which only includes certain post-departure coverages. Or, if you travel often, the Annual Plan can cover your trips throughout the year.

As of writing, Travel Guard doesn't offer any discounts. That's common for travel insurance — you're more likely to find deals when shopping for other types of insurance, such as home and auto insurance .

Travel Guard is a portfolio of travel insurance and travel-related services offered by AIG Travel, a member of American International Group (AIG). AIG also offers life insurance and a variety of business insurance products.

For example, if you're going on a cruise, you might want to look at Nationwide Travel Insurance . The provider advertises cruise-specific insurance with three plan options available. This type of coverage is designed with issues unique to cruises in mind — from ship-based breakdowns to missed pre-pard excursions.

If you're planning a more active trip filled with rock climbing or sky diving, Berkshire Hathaway offers the AdrenalineCare® plan which features coverage for unforeseen costs that result from participating in extreme sports on your trip, as well as reimbursement for sporting equipment delay. Pre-existing conditions are covered under this plan (if you meet qualifying conditions).

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection has multiple plans to cover vacations from luxury travel to adventure travel. The brand's LuxuryCare offers the highest limits of travel insurance coverage offered by the company. Quotes and policies are available online.

As you can see, offerings vary by provider. It can be helpful to compare multiple companies and the plans they offer to find what works best for you. It's even better if you gather several quotes to ensure you're getting a good price for your policy.

Money matters — so make the most of it. Get expert tips, strategies, news and everything else you need to maximize your money, right to your inbox.  Sign up here .

Travel Guard offers plenty of ways to customize your policy, making it a solid choice for travel insurance. You can also access additional options by giving Travel Guard a call. However, make sure to check out other travel insurance companies too — comparison shopping is essential when picking any type of financial product.
