Berchtesgaden Tour

Salzburg and Bavaria share a long history spanning countless years. The bus tour to Berchtesgaden introduces you to the most important sightseeing attractions on the other side of the border.

Bavaria, here we come!

This four-hour bus tour takes you from Salzburg City and across the border in Marktschellenberg to Bavaria. Be sure to bring along your passport, just in case we get checked at the border! The route runs alongside the banks of the picturesque Königsseeache, while views of the mighty Watzmann and Bavarian Alps will also be your constant companions during the tour.

Obersalzberg and Salt Mine

Dokumentation Obersalzberg provides information about Adolf Hitler’s former mountain retreat and about World War Two. Once merely a holiday escape for Hitler, over time it became a restricted zone for the exclusive use of the Führer, parts of which are still preserved today. Many tour operators combine a visit to this information center, or offer as an alternative, a visit to the Berchtesgaden salt mine.

Germany’s most beautiful lake

Yet another stop on this tour involves a pleasant walk along the shores of Lake Königssee – famous as “Germany’s most beautiful lake”. The title is well deserved, not least because of the often mystical moods of the water and enchanting plays of light. A true highlight of the tour!

Stroll through Berchtesgaden

A visit to the market town of Berchtesgaden, famous as a center of arts & crafts, adds the finishing touch to our bus tour. This romantic small town, with its winding lanes and elaborately painted building facades, was seemingly plucked from the pages of a picture book. Also well worth a visit: the abbey of the Augustinian Canons.

And the best part? It’s so easy to get Berchtesgaden from Salzburg — just a few dozen kilometers away .

You can drive there in 40 minutes, take a single bus ride of 50 minutes to an hour, or hop on a train for an hour and 30 minutes with a transfer.

Is It Worth Going to Berchtesgaden? (From Salzburg)

I know, I know! The view from Berchtesgaden is breathtaking! It’s irresistible, especially that it’s very close to Salzburg.

But before you plan a day trip from Salzburg, let’s make sure it’s the right destination for you and you’re making the right decision.

If you have already decided to visit Berchtesgaden, you can click here to go straight to the list of unmissable things to do in Berchtesgaden .

1. Consider Berchtesgaden Overall Experience

First of all, it’s important to remember that Berchtesgaden is all about nature, history, and salt — its local industry since the medieval ages.

If you enjoy exploring the great outdoors, taking in breathtaking views, or learning about history, Berchtesgaden is a trip you won’t want to miss.

In fact, Berchtesgaden is home to the “ Eagle’s Nest ,” a tourist attraction that is both scenic and historic.

It was once a vital location for the Germans during World War II, and it overlooks the entire town of Berchtesgaden .

Berchtesgaden is also home to a salt mine that dates back to the early 16th century , offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore a whole new world beneath the majestic mountains.

While it may seem like an attraction geared towards adults, it’s actually a fun destination for families and kids, too!

Since you will be coming from Salzburg, where you have probably learned about salt (salt has been Salzburg’s primary industry for centuries), your visit to the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine shall be a chance to learn more about how salt was extracted in the region .

Finally, Berchtesgaden is surrounded by stunning lakes that are an absolute must-see for nature lovers. Pristine, picturesque, and truly magical — that’s how I would describe them.

One of Berchtesgaden’s lakes, Konigssee , even has a charming church in the middle that looks like something straight out of a fairy tale. Trust me, when you visit, you’ll be left speechless by its beauty.

Do these make you feel excited? In my case, it’s always!

2. Consider Berchtesgaden’s Season and Weather

Salzburg is a great destination to visit year-round. Berchtesgaden has close proximity to Salzburg.

Both are true, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that Berchtesgaden is also worth visiting at any time of the year.

The best time to visit Berchtesgaden from Salzburg is during the non-winter months , when the weather is ideal for sightseeing and most tourist attractions are open.

It may be better to stay in Salzburg during the winter and enjoy the Christmas special events and musical performances in its Old Town, instead of visiting Berchtesgaden unless you’re interested in skiing and winter sports.

So, with all that said, is Berchtesgaden worth visiting during summer, warmer, dry months?

Not always . You should consider the weather, especially if you want to go to the mountains or Eagle’s Nest.

If the weather is bad, you might not be able to see any view because of the fog, and the cable cars or buses to the mountains might not run for some safety reasons.

In case you really want to see Berchtesgaden, it’ll be a good idea to have a flexible itinerary and a backup plan in case you can’t go on the day you planned.

Monitor the weather forecast and the live webcam feed, which displays the current weather conditions in the mountains.

The link to live broadcast can be found in the resources section of this post.

3. Consider Berchtesgaden’s Events and Festivals

Festivals and cultural events are a great way to create lasting memories while traveling. They offer a unique and fun way to discover the culture of a place.

In Berchtesgaden, there are several events that you might enjoy.

These fascinating and fun events are a great reason to take a day trip to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg, no matter the season.

You can check the official website of Berchtesgaden for a calendar of events (see the link in the resources section).

However, some events that I recommend checking out are the Fasching Festival, May Day Celebration, and the Great Bavarian Evenings .

So, what is the Fasching Festival ?

It’s a lively pre-Lent celebration that takes place in February , similar to Carnival or Mardi Gras.

You can immerse yourself in the local culture and enjoy traditional music, dancing, and delicious food and beer.

And if you’re lucky enough to attend when the festival falls over Valentine’s Day, you might even get to see couples participating in wheelbarrow races !

If you’re traveling during Spring , May Day Celebration is the event to watch out for. This joyous event is all about celebrating the fertility of the season.

The festivities kick off with the raising of the towering May Pole, which can reach heights of up to 50 feet.

Get ready to dance to the sounds of brass band music and enjoy local food and drinks at the temporary beer gardens!

I’m sure that many of you are planning to visit Berchtesgaden during the summer. So, I must mention the Great Bavarian Evenings .

Every Monday evening from June to September , Market Square in Berchtesgaden comes alive with authentic bands and men’s performing groups doing thigh-slapping, heel-whacking dances called Schuhplattler.

The evening continues with brass band music and a live DJ. It’s a great way to experience the local culture and have some fun!

5 Unmissable Things to Do in Berchtesgaden on A Day Trip

Although there are more than a dozen things to do in Berchtesgaden, such as visiting the mirror-like lake (Hintersee) and exploring the canyon (Wimbachklamm), a day trip from Salzburg would be just enough to see Berchtesgaden’s highlights.

They’re the unmissable things to do in Berchtesgaden and you’ll find them within this section.

1. Eagle’s Nest (Kehlstein)

Eagle’s Nest or Kehlsteinhaus is a unique attraction in Berchtesgaden, a must-visit for the breathtaking views and a glimpse into history it offers to visitors.

Perched atop the summit of the Kehlstein , a rocky outcrop rising above Obersalzberg, sits the Kehlsteinhaus.

Known in English as the Eagle’s Nest, this Nazi-constructed building was once used exclusively by members of the Nazi Party for government and social meetings, and was even visited by Adolf Hitler on 14 documented occasions.

Today, however, it has been transformed into a seasonal restaurant, beer garden, and tourist site.

While Eagle’s Nest looks like just a building or restaurant on a mountaintop, it’s actually a marvel of engineering.

From the winding mountain road to the regal elevator powered by a submarine engine , every detail of this structure is noteworthy.

Remarkably, the Eagle’s Nest survived the Second World War unscathed, meaning that everything you see here is original and not reconstructed.

History buffs will appreciate the sun terrace outside, which features a series of display panels detailing the history of this place.

Interestingly, there you’ll learn that despite being built for Hitler, he rarely visited and never stayed overnight due to his fear of heights!

Are you now interested in visiting Eagle’s Nest? Here’s how to…

Your journey to the Eagle’s Nest begins at Berchtesgaden Hbf, where you’ll board RVO Bus 838 to the Eagles Nest Bus Stop (Kehlstein Busabfahrt).

From there, you’ll need to purchase a ticket for the special RVO bus 849 , which will whisk you up to the Eagles Nest Tunnel or parking area known as Kehlsteinparkplatz, where the last leg of the journey to Eagle’s Nest will begin.

For the more adventurous, there is also the option to hike up to the Eagle’s Nest, though be warned that it is a long and challenging trek ( taking at least 2-3 hours ) — I do not recommend it!

The final leg of your journey involves walking through a cold, dark tunnel from Kehlsteinparkplatz before riding a gleaming, brass elevator all the way up to the Eagle’s Nest itself.

You can’t take photos in the elevator, though.

Before you go, it’s important to note that the Eagle’s Nest is not a year-round attraction. It is only open to visitors from mid-May to October.

During this time, the Kehlsteinhaus is open from 8:30am to 4:50pm, with the last bus from Kehlsteinparkplatz departing at 4:50pm. So be sure to plan your visit accordingly!

Please see the official website of Eagle’s Nest in the resources section of this post for latest information.

Bus schedules and online ticketing site included.

2. Salt Mine Berchtesgaden

As you explore the charming city of Salzburg, you’ll undoubtedly hear the word ‘salt’ mentioned time and time again.

After all, this city was named after the precious mineral that brought it prosperity for centuries — the white gold of the region!

A visit to the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden is a must for anyone looking to further discover the industry that sustained the region for so long.

The Salt Mine Berchtesgaden is an ancient mine that has been in operation since 1517 , making it the oldest salt mine in Germany . It boasts salt deposits up to 300 meters below the valley floor.

When you venture inside, you’ll discover a breathtaking salt cathedral in an extraordinary way — by taking an exhilarating ride down a miner’s slide.

In some parts, you’ll be learning the formation and extraction of salt during train and boat rides.

You will be following the Salt Experience Trail through the mystical Moserrösche mine gallery, a tunnel that stretches over 100 meters and reveals the structure of a glacial moraine.

With 3D animations and an underground boat trip across a salt lake, it’s an almost one-hour tour adventure for all ages.

At the end of your walk, you’ll be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Watzmann.

While the tours are conducted in German, audio guides are available in other languages.

Taking photos isn’t allowed during the tour, though.

But don’t worry about not being able to take photos during the tour — above ground, you’ll find perfect photo stops around the Salt Mine and on the Salt Experience Trail.

There are life-size miners and mining machines providing the perfect backdrop for your souvenir photo of the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine.

Getting to the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine couldn’t be easier, thanks to its convenient location along the bus no. 840 route.

Just hop off at the Salzbergwerk bus stop and take a short walk to the Salt Mine visitor’s entrance.

This bus route links Berchtesgaden and Salzburg, so if you’re coming from Salzburg and prefer to use public transportation, the Salt Mine Berchtesgaden is an easy first stop on your Berchtesgaden day trip.

The Salt Mine Berchtesgaden is usually open all year round, from April to the first week of November. It is open daily from 9:00 am until 5:00 pm. From the second week of November until March, it is open daily from 11:00 am until 3:00 pm.

However, it is always best to check the official website of Salt Mine Berchtesgaden for updates and latest information, as the opening hours may change due to holidays or other unforeseen circumstances.

3. Königssee

While Salzburg has a number of lakes in Salzkammergut and its lake district, when it comes to beauty, they are outmatched by Konigssee .

It’s the enchanting lake nestled in the heart of the Berchtesgaden Alps, in the town of Schönau, just a stone’s throw away from the charming town of Berchtesgaden.

This stunning lake, Germany’s third deepest, is renowned for its crystal-clear waters — so pure that it’s known as the cleanest lake in all of Germany!

To preserve its natural beauty, only electric-powered passenger ships, rowing boats and pedal boats are allowed to grace its tranquil waters.

Truly, Königssee is a paradise for nature lovers and hikers.

However, it is also a magical place for everyone; all because of its incredible echo.

The surrounding sheer rock walls create an echo — so clear that it has become a tradition for boat tours to stop and play a flugelhorn or trumpet to demonstrate this phenomenon.

The sound reverberates up to seven times, creating a mesmerizing symphony of echoes that is sure to leave you in awe.

With the awe-inspiring view, this unique experience is just one of the many reasons why the Königssee is a must-visit destination for travelers.

Halfway down the western shore of the lake lies the picturesque St. Bartholomä, a famous pilgrimage church with an inn nearby.

This church is one of the most famous in Germany because of its location.

If you are a photographer, this church will undoubtedly inspire you to take many photos during your visit to Königssee.

Are you going to Lake Königssee? It’s just a bus ride away from Berchtesgaden Hauptbahnhof.

Hop on bus #839, 841, or 843 and you’ll be dropped off at the lake’s parking lot.

While the view from the shore is already breathtaking, I highly recommend taking an electric boat tour to explore the lake.

From April to October, daily tours are available to cross the entire lake and visit Saint Bartholomeus and Lake Obersee.

You can purchase tickets at the booth in front of the boat docks, which opens 30 minutes before the first boat departs.

Don’t forget to keep your ticket with you for the return trip — you won’t be allowed back on the boat without it.

Know that you can find the timetables for Lake Königssee on the official website, in the resources section.

Whenever I hear about people visiting Konigssee without also visiting Jenner, I can’t help but feel a twinge of regret on their behalf.

Overlooking Mount Jenner means missing out on an incredibly breathtaking experience.

From the top of the mountain, accessible via cable car from Schönau, visitors can take in panoramic views of the Watzmann range and Königssee below.

It’s truly a sight of the Bavarian Alps to behold!

While tickets for the Jennerbahn may seem pricey at first glance, the scenic experience is worth every penny.

The beautiful experience starts with Jennerbahn’s spacious cable cars, providing a safe and enjoyable 20-minute ride up the mountain, with stunning views of the landscape passing by.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can exit at the middle station and hike part of the way up or down.

Otherwise, take the cable car all the way to the top, where you’ll be greeted by a terrace with a restaurant and breathtaking overlooks.

After arriving, you can hike to different viewpoints to take it all in.

The top station has a restaurant, Jenneralm.

It offers indoor and outdoor seating, serving up delicious Bavarian cuisine, beer, and cocktails where you can dine with a view before or after exploring the mountaintop.

The Jennerbahn is just a short walk from Lake Königssee, but before heading up the mountain, be sure to check the weather conditions and views from the top of Jenner Mountain.

You can purchase tickets online or at the ticket booth upon arrival.

The resources section of this post contains links to the live webcam view and the online ticketing page.

5. Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle

If you’re looking for a free, simple yet charming and scenic experience in Berchtesgaden during your day trip from Salzburg, exploring Old Town Berchtesgaden and visiting Kirchleitn Kapelle are the perfect activities.

The historic town center is filled with charming Rococo buildings, including town halls, a church, and a royal palace.

Old Town Berchtesgaden may be small, but you’ll surely be amazed by the Luftmalerei that adorns the facades of the houses in it.

(That’s most especially if you are an architecture enthusiast like me! LOL)

So, what is Luftmalerei? It is a stunning form of mural art that can be found in the charming villages and towns of southern Germany and Austria.

This folk-oriented variation of trompe-l’œil from the Baroque period is especially popular in Upper Bavaria (where Berchtesgaden is) and in Tyrol.

It imitates architectural elements and, just like ‘high architecture’, it also embeds pictorial cartouches, mirrors, and fields

Because of them, strolling through the streets of Old Town Berchtesgaden, you’ll feel like you’re walking on the pages of a color book.

It’s a unique experience in the German parts of the Alps.

North of Old Town Berchtesgaden, however, lies an iconic landmark and picture-perfect spot in Berchtesgaden — Kirchleitn Kapelle.

It’s one of the best places to watch the sunset in Berchtesgaden.

Nestled above the Weinfeld in Berchtesgaden, it is the chapel that you can see with the overlooking view of Berchtesgaden Old Town and Watzmann mountain in the backdrop.

Because Kirchleitn Kapelle creates a scene straight out of a fantasy movie, it has become an iconic symbol of Berchtesgaden and became one of the most photographed motifs in all of Bavaria.

If you want to make your Berchtesgaden day trip from Salzburg (or any other place) unique, this church is the off-the-beaten-path destination you should not really miss.

To reach the stunning Kirchleitn Kapelle from Old Town Berchtesgaden, start your journey at Marktpl and make your way toward Schlossplatz.

Take a left onto Weinfeldweg and keep an eye out for the rustic Spielplatz am Weinfeldweg playground, where you’ll turn right.

Continue along the pathway through the picturesque meadows until you reach a fork at the end.

Take the stairs and after just a few more steps, you’ll see Kirchleitn Kapelle.

Best Way to Get to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg

If you’re thinking about taking a day trip from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, you’ve got three options: Bus #840, Train, or Taxi. But undoubtedly, the bus is the way to go.

Not only is it the cheapest option, but it also takes you directly from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden without any transfers, unlike the train.

Plus, it’s about 20 minutes faster than the train! And with the added bonus of extra stops, you can even hop on Bus 840 in Salzburg and alight at places like the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine on its way into town.

You can buy tickets for Bus #840 directly from the bus driver with cash, or from the outdoor machines at the Salzburg station bus depot.

Alternatively, you can get your tickets from the OEBB official website, which I’ve linked in the resources section of this post.

Note that bus 840 departs every hour from Bus Stall J (Engelbert-Weiß-Weg), just across the road from McDonald’s near Salzburg’s main bus depot. 50 minutes after departing, you should’ve arrived in Berchtesgaden.

If you wish to watch the sunset in Berchtesgaden, you’ll probably miss the last bus back to Salzburg.

But don’t worry! You can still use the trains. Trains from Berchtesgaden to Salzburg have last returning trips between 9:30-10:10 pm daily.

How to Visit Berchtesgaden from Salzburg (DIY Itinerary)

While there are many amazing tourist attractions and activities in Berchtesgaden for your day trip from Salzburg, it’s practically impossible to do them all in just one day.

But don’t worry if you can’t hit them all — visiting two or three should be enough and could already give most travelers a satisfying experience.

In this part, I’ll give you ideas on how you can make the most of your day trip to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg.

However, if you’re a big fan of mountains and nature like me, or if you’re into landscape photography, you might have to consider staying in Berchtesgaden for 2 days.

This way, you can really soak up all the beauty and adventure the town has to offer. In case you need a place to stay, here is a link to the best hotel deals in Berchtesgaden .

The link will take you to a hotel browser with a map browser that will help you find the most convenient hotel for you.

How Much Time to Spend at Each Tourist Attraction in Berchtesgaden

To help you plan your Berchtesgaden day trip itinerary, it’s important to know how much time you’ll need to fully enjoy each tourist attraction. This will give you an idea of which places you can visit.

As a recap, here are the must-see attractions we aim to see on a day trip to Berchtesgaden:

  • Eagle’s Nest
  • Salt Mine Berchtesgaden
  • Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle

1. Eagle’s Nest

If you’re planning a trip to Eagle’s Nest , it’s a good idea to set aside more or less two hours for your visit.

This will give you enough time to explore the area and even grab a bite to eat at the on-site restaurant if you’d like.

Keep in mind that there may be a wait for transportation to and from the site, so be sure to factor in an additional 30 minutes to an hour for queuing and travel time .

When it comes to Salt Mine Berchtesgaden , be sure to allow at least two hours for your tour.

This will give you enough time to complete the tour and take care of any necessary tasks, such as purchasing tickets, borrowing miner’s clothes, changing into them, and returning them after your visit.

3. Königssee

If you’re planning to visit Königssee , it’s a good idea to set aside at least five hours for your trip.

This will give you enough time to take the four-hour round-trip boat ride, make a quick stop at Saint Bartholomä Church, and take care of any necessary tasks such as queuing and buying tickets.

If you’re interested in hiking, there are some great opportunities at the southern tip of Königssee, in an area known as Salet.

From there, you can continue on to Obersee (Upper Lake) and Rothbachfall (Germany’s tallest waterfall).

Obersee is particularly stunning, with its mirror-like clear water and calm surface.

It’s only a 10-minute hike from the ferry dock in Salet, so I highly recommend taking the time to visit.

If you do decide to see Obersee , be sure to allow an additional 30 minutes for hiking to the lake, relaxing for a few minutes, and taking photographs.

If you want to hike around Obersee and visit the idyllic Fischunkelalm Farm & Pasture on the other shore, you’ll need to allow another 30 minutes .

However, I don’t recommend hiking further to Rothbachfalls as it can be quite time-consuming and may prevent you from seeing other attractions in Berchtesgaden on your day trip.

Visiting Jenner mountain would be slightly shorter than the tourist attractions previously mentioned.

You can expect to spend about an hour and a half exploring Jenner.

If you’d like to grab a bite to eat at the mountaintop restaurant, be sure to allow an additional 30 minutes, for a total of two hours.

If you’re planning to explore Old Town Berchtesgaden and visit Kirchleitn Kapelle , you can expect to spend about an hour seeing both.

However, depending on your plans, such as watching the sunset over Berchtesgaden from Kirchleitn Kapelle, you may want to allow for a bit more time.

Different Ways to Do a Berchtesgaden Day Trip

Now that you know how much time to spend at each tourist attraction in Berchtesgaden, you can easily plan your day trip and decide how many attractions you can visit.

If you’re coming from a place like Munich, you may only have time to see three attractions, such as the Eagle’s Nest, Salt Mine, and Old Town.

However, if you’re coming from Salzburg, which is less than an hour away from Berchtesgaden, you may be able to visit up to four attractions.

Below, I’ll show you some different ways to spend a day in Berchtesgaden on a day trip from Salzburg.

1. Classic Berchtesgaden Day Trip Itinerary

Make the most of your time in Berchtesgaden.

  • Morning — Salt Mine Berchtesgaden
  • Lunchtime and early afternoon — Eagle’s Nest
  • Afternoon — Jenner (optional but highly recommended)
  • Evening — Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle

Our goal is to catch the first tour of the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine by leaving Salzburg at 8:00 AM or earlier.

Instead of going directly to the Berchtesgaden bus station, we’ll get off at the Salt Mine’s bus stop, which is along the route of bus number 840.

For your upcoming itineraries, you may not need to leave Salzburg as early as 8:00 am.

However, especially during peak season, it’s still a good idea to arrive early in Berchtesgaden so that you can visit its tourist attractions without having to navigate through large crowds.

2. Pure Nature Berchtesgaden Day trip Itinerary

Best for perfect sunny weather.

  • Morning until early afternoon — Königssee
  • Late Afternoon — Jenner
  • Evening — Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle (optional)

In this itinerary, you’ll head straight to Königssee after arriving in Berchtesgaden from Salzburg.

Keep in mind that the Königssee tour takes around 5 hours, so it’s important to plan your meals accordingly.

One option is to bring a packed meal from a local supermarket to save money.

Alternatively, you could eat a heavy meal before exploring Königssee and then have your next meal at the restaurant in Jenner.

3. Best of Berchtesgaden Day Trip Itinerary

History and nature.

  • Morning — Eagle’s Nest
  • Early lunch until the afternoon — Königssee
  • Late afternoon until evening — Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle

Eagle’s Nest and Königssee are two of Berchtesgaden’s most unique and beautiful attractions.

I highly recommend visiting both to see the best of what Berchtesgaden has to offer.

In this itinerary, I suggest taking an early lunch at Eagle’s Nest so that you can head straight to Königssee after your visit.

4. Cloudy Berchtesgaden Day Trip Itinerary

When fog and clouds cover the view from the mountains.

  • Afternoon — Königssee

Don’t worry if bad weather strikes during your day trip to Berchtesgaden.

While you may not be able to see the breathtaking views of the Bavarian Alps from Eagle’s Nest or Jenner, you can still make the most of your trip by visiting the Salt Mine and soaking in the misty, magical views of Lake Königssee.

5. Limited time Berchtesgaden Day Trip Itinerary

See the mountains, lake, and the world underneath in a shorter time.

  • Late Morning — Salt Mine Berchtesgaden
  • Lunch — Jenner
  • Afternoon — Old Town Berchtesgaden and Kirchleitn Kapelle

If you have limited time for your day trip to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg, I suggest this itinerary to help you see as many different beautiful parts of Berchtesgaden as possible.

Instead of visiting Eagle’s Nest that needs almost three hours to visit, go to Jenner instead.

Jenner is a breathtaking alternative to Eagle’s Nest for views of the Bavarian Alps.

Additionally, since Jenner is located close to Königssee, it also gives you the opportunity to see the lake up close or from a beautiful perspective overlooking it.

Eagle’s Nest: history & nature in one place

Explore the fascinating history of the Eagle’s Nest on an unforgettable tour! The Eagle’s Nest, also known as the "Eagle's Nest," was built in the 1930s on the summit of the Kehlstein in the Bavarian Alps. Originally designed as a gift for Adolf Hitler, the Eagle’s Nest offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.

Today, the historic building is used as a restaurant and viewpoint and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the eventful past and enjoy the beauty of the Berchtesgaden Alps. The Kehlsteinhaus is located on the Kehlstein. This is a secondary peak of the Göll in the Berchtesgaden Alps.

Book your tour with Panorama Tours today and discover the unique history of the Eagle’s Nest and the majestic landscape that surrounds it.

Eagle’s Nest Tour in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria

The Eagle’s Nest Tour takes the route from Mirabell Square in Salzburg via the Alpenstraße to neighboring Bavaria and finally to the Obersalzberg. Upon arrival, you change to specifically equipped busses that take you up the 6.5km (4 miles) long and 4m (12ft) wide road with a gradient of 22%. The last stretch to the Eagle’s Nest consists of a 124m (406ft) long tunnel through solid rock and a sumptuously decorated elevator, which takes 41 seconds to go up the 124m (406ft) to the interior of the Eagle’s Nest.

Enjoy the striking views of the Alps from the Eagle’s Nest plateau at 1,834 m (406 ft) elevation. Discover alpine flora and fauna and enjoy the view at the summit cross, close by.

Before we get back on route to Salzburg, we stop at Berchtesgaden where you get the chance to explore this picturesque town.

An architectural masterpiece

The road leading to the Eagle’s Nest is a feat of architectural mastery. It was blasted into the solid rock of the mountain over a period of only 13 months. The elevation difference of 800m (2625ft) is covered with only a single switchback and 5 tunnels. The design of this road is unique around the world.

Eagle‘s Nest under National Socialism

Construction of the Eagle’s Nest with its metre-thick foundation walls was finished after only 13 months in 1938. It was one of the most elaborate construction projects during the Third Reich. The building is located on a spur just beneath the summit of Kehlstein Mountain at an elevation of 1,834m (6017ft).

Initially, the Eagle’s Nest was intended to fulfill representational purposes and was a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50 th  birthday. Hitler however visited the Eagle’s Nest only a few times.

Except for the Eagle’s Nest, only few “authentic” buildings of the Third Reich are preserved to this day. The Eagle’s Nest was not hit during the airstrike on 25 th April 1945 and still exists in its original form today.

Its name was coined by a French diplomat who supposedly gave the building the nickname “Eagle’s Nest”.

Today, the building is used as a mountain inn. The restaurant boasts a unique panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden mountains and the area around Salzburg. Additionally, it is a reminder of the horrors and human abysses of the Nazi dictatorship under Adolf Hitler.

When does the Eagle’s nest open?

Depending on weather and snow conditions, the Eagle’s Nest is open between early May and the end of October.

During the winter months the Eagle’s Nest is closed.

Why was the Eagle’s Nest built?

The Eagle's Nest was built as a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday, intended to serve as a prestigious retreat and a place to entertain dignitaries and state guests. Funded by the Nazi Party, its construction was part of a larger plan to consolidate power by creating monumental structures that reflected the regime's strength and Hitler's personal dominance. Despite its grand design and strategic location atop the Kehlstein mountain in the Bavarian Alps, Hitler seldom visited the site, reportedly due to his discomfort with heights. Today, it stands as a reminder of a dark period in history, attracting visitors from around the world as a museum and educational site.

Is there a guided tour inside the building?

Yes, there is a short guided tour through the building.

Is the entrance fee to the Eagle’s Nest included?

Yes, the entrance fee to the Eagle's Nest is included in the tour price.

Is there a long wait at entrance to the Eagle’s Nest?

No, the tour includes Skip the Line tickets, so there is no waiting time.

What was Hitler doing at the Eagle’s Nest?

Adolf Hitler made several visits to the Eagle's Nest throughout his tenure as the head of National Socialist Germany. This site was presented to Hitler by the NSDAP on the occasion of his 50th birthday and functioned as a distinguished venue for hosting state guests. Primarily, Hitler utilized the Eagle's Nest for relaxation and confidential discussions with his inner circle. It is documented that he commemorated his birthdays at this location and deliberated on significant political matters.

It is important to note that the Eagle’s Nest is not directly linked to the atrocities of World War II or the Holocaust. It was rather a place for Hitler to relax and discuss political matters away from the Berlin seat of government.

The tour price includes the ride with the special bus and the entrance to the Kehlsteinhaus. Once you arrive at the Kehlsteinhaus, you will benefit from Skip the Line tickets, which are exclusively for guests of the Panorama Tours Eagle's Nest tour and reduce the waiting time extremely by bringing you directly into the historic building.

salzburg to berchtesgaden tour

How To Get To Berchtesgaden:

Time From Salzburg : 49 minutes by bus; 30 minutes by taxi/car; or 65-85 minutes by train. Time From Munich :  2 hours & 45 minutes train ride; or 2 hours by car. Bus Timetable From Salzburg :  Bus 840 ( Summer , Winter ). Train Timetables :  German Bahn website  HERE  or Austrian OEBB website  HERE . Trains Inside Berchtesgaden : Bus 838 to Dokumentation Center ( Timetable ); Bus 849 to Eagle’s Nest ( Timetable ); Bus 841 to Konigsse ( Timetable ).

One of the main things that scares people off from visiting Berchtesgaden is figuring out how to get there from either Salzburg or Munich, but it is actually really easy to do.  From Munich, the train is better for most visitors but from Salzburg, which is where most of you are coming from, Bus 840 is the best option.  Our guide below explains each of the options plus driving tips in great detail.  Don’t worry if you have luggage with you as storage lockers are available at the Berchtesgaden Train/Bus Station.

Getting To Berchtesgaden From Salzburg:

1. bus #840 from salzburg ( 49 minutes ):.

How To Get To Berchtesgaden From Salzburg By Bus 840

Advantages : Not only is Bus 840 the cheapest option, but is direct from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden with no transfers needed and is 21 minutes faster than the train.  There are also some additional flexibility on extra stops you can board Bus 840 in Salzburg which we touch on below and may be closer to your hotel.

Disadvantages : There is limited luggage storage on Bus 840 so you have an usually high amount of bags with you, then you may want to consider either the bus or taxi which are explained below.  On the Weekends Bus 840 doesn’t start running until 8:15am ( 9:15am on Winter weekends ) and the last return to Salzburg from Berchtesgaden each day is at 6:15pm each day while the Train typically runs from 6:15am until 10:10pm in both directions.

Ticket Cost & Buying : It’s 5.80€ for a one-way ticket or 10€ for a Tageskarte All Day Pass which also covers your return trip to Salzburg on Bus 840.  You’ll buy your ticket from the bus driver in cash or from the ticket machines.  This ticket DOES NOT cover other inter-city buses inside either Salzburg or Berchtesgaden, but a day ticket for those inside either city is very cheap.

Route Overview : Taking Bus 840 from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is very simple as the route directly connects the central stations in both cities.  Bus 840 leaves just across the road from McDonald’s near Salzburg’s main bus depot at the streetside Bus Stall J ( Engelbert-Weiß-Weg ) .  The bus leaves around once an hour and only takes 49 minutes to get to Berchtesgaden with no transfers needed.  Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver in cash, from the Oebb website, or from the outdoor machines at the Salzburg station bus depot.   Please keep in mind other buses from Salzburg go toward Berchtesgaden ( Buses 25 & 28 ), but they only go as far as the German border at Saint Leohard then turn around.  Only Bus 840 goes all the way to Berchtesgaden.  On returns back to Salzburg, Bus 840 will drop you off directly in front of the train station in the main bus depot ( Bin G ).

Bus 840 Timetable : Bus 840 takes 49 minutes from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and you can view the timetables here ( Summer , Winter ).  It leaves Salzburg ( Bin J ) around once an hour on Weekdays from 6:35am until 6:15pm.  On Weekends in Summer it departs from 8:15am until 5:15pm or from 9:15am to 5:15pm on Weekends in the Winter.  The last returning bus to Salzburg leaves the Berchtesgaden train station at 6:15pm each day with the train as a nighttime backup.

While it doesn’t change often, always check the current Bus 840 Timetable schedules posted at both Salzburg ( Bin J ) and Berchtesgaden Stations when you get there and check the schedule on Austrian OEBB website ( HERE ) before you leave.

Important Stops : In addition to the Salzburg Train station, you can get on Bus 840 to Berchtesgaden at the South-bound Mirabellplatz, Rathaus, Mozartsteg ( Rudolfskai ), or Justizgebäude ( Hellbrunner Straße ) bus stops depending on where you are staying in town.  You can find these stop marked above on our How To Get To Berchtesgaden map.  We prefer to leave from the train station to get the best seats, but Northbound stops of Mozartsteg ( Imbergstraße ) and Theatergasse are especially helpful on your return to Salzburg to get off closer to your hotel.

Bus 840 also stops at the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine on its way into town.  Especially if you pre-book your tour, it can be a big time-saver to get out at the Salt Mine on the way or use it as your last stop before returning to Salzburg.

Luggage : If you have luggage you need to get on at the Salzburg Bus Depot/Train Station as Bus 840 often has no luggage storage bins so you’ll want first access to the seats that have better space for bringing your bags.  These limited central seats also have leather straps for securing your luggage.

If you miss the last bus : On your return trip, if you miss the last departure of Bus 840 back to Salzburg from Berchtesgaden at 6:15pm, you still have the option to take the train back.  The train departs hourly as a backup until 10:10pm daily ( see info below ) and is only 10.50€ each way.  Taxis back to Salzburg, however, will be 60€.

2. By Train From Salzburg ( 65-85 Minutes ):

How To Get To Berchtesgaden From Salzburg By Train Public Transportation

While Bus 840 is faster and has better scenery, getting to Berchtesgaden by train from Salzburg is super easy especially if you have luggage.  Trains depart once an hour starting around 6am with the last returning trains leave between 9:30-10:10pm daily.

Advantages : While we primarily take Bus 840 to Berchtesgaden, the train has a couple of advantages.  The biggest one is if you have a lot of bags but not enough people to justify a taxi since Bus 840 has limited luggage space.  The train can also be helpful on weekends as Bus 840 doesn’t leave Salzburg until 8:15am ( 9:15am on Winter weekends ), but the train starts at 6:15am every day.  Also if decide to stay in Berchtesgaden past dinner time you’ll have to return by train as Bus 840 to Salzburg has its last departure each day 6:15pm, but the train returns run until 10:10pm daily.

Disadvantages : The train options to Berchtesgaden from Salzburg is 21 minutes slower than Bus 840 and 40 minutes slower than a taxi or driving.  It is also a bit more expensive than taking Bus 840. The train method also requires a transfer ( albeit an easy one ) while the other options do not.

Ticket Cost & Buying : Tickets will cost 10.90€ each way ( 8.90€ if you buy in advance ) and almost never sell out so you can pretty much just show up before the train you want to take is leaving and buy your ticket.  For the current schedule visit the German Bahn website HERE  or Austrian OEBB website  HERE .

Route Overview : The train ride from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden will take about 65-85 Minutes.  From Salzburg Station, you’ll first ride for 10 minutes to Freilassing on the Austria/Germany border where you will switch trains.  At the Freilassing Station, it is a convenient transfer directly across the platform for the local train to Berchtesgaden which takes 50 minutes.

3. By Taxi From Salzburg ( 30 Minutes ):

How To Get To Berchtesgaden From Salzburg By Taxi Car Rental

It only takes 30 minutes to drive the scenic 16 miles ( 26 km ) route from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden making it a little faster than taking the bus and a lot faster than the train.  Taxi service from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is pricey, but can be a great idea for visitors in groups of 3-4 people or those who have a lot of luggage.

Taxi Advantages : Taxis can be a great option if you tight on time, have a group, or have lots of luggage.  The biggest advantage of driving is that you can get right to all of the main attractions.  You won’t have to continuously backtrack to the train station or waste time waiting to switch buses.  Smart day-tripping groups have a taxi from Salzburg take then right to the Kings Lake, then afterward a new taxi from the Konigsse Visitor Center to the Dokumentation Center for the Eagles Nest, and then end the day returning to Berchtesgaden Station by local bus to get Bus 840 back to Salzburg.

Taxis also run 24 hours a day and we have arrived in Berchtesgaden by taxi after a train delay dropped us in Salzburg at 3am after the buses and trains were done for the night.

Disadvantages : The only real disadvantage of taking a taxi from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is the 60€ price tag.

Taxi Cost : Taxi pricing from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden can be tricky as the journey is supposed to be a fixed rate around 50€ one way plus tip, but drivers often try to vastly overcharge you.  Make sure to ask, negotiate, and understand the price before accepting a ride which in total shouldn’t normally be more than 60€.  Prices for any point to point taxi rides inside Berchtesgaden will cost between 10-12€ a ride.

Where To Get A Taxi : You can get a taxi from outside the Salzburg train station, in Makartplatz in front of Mozart’s Wohnhaus, or from your hotel.  Inside Berchtesgaden, there are almost always taxis directly in front of the train station. Other places in town like the village center, Dokumentation Center, and Kings Lake also have taxis but they aren’t always there.  The Dokumentation Center and Konigssee Visitors Center staff can both help you secure a taxi back to the train station or Salzburg if needed.

4. By Rental Car From Salzburg ( 30 Minutes ):

How To Get To Berchtesgaden From Salzburg By Taxi Car Rental

Like the taxi option, a rental car from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden only takes 30 minutes.  With the cost plus the time to pick up and drop off a rental car you really shouldn’t rent one to drive from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden, but is you already have one then you should use it.  The biggest issue with a rental car in Salzburg is the lack of parking which is why we tend not to use one here even when it is bundled for free with our plane tickets.  While there is plenty of parking in Berchtesgaden, the cost you save on bus tickets by driving will be used up by paying for parking in Berchtesgaden.

Rental Car Advantages : While driving is only a little faster than the bus, the biggest advantage is being able to drive directly to the main attractions.  You will be able to go right to the Konigssee, Old Town, or the Dokumentation Center to get the Eagles Nest bus without having to wait for the buses at Berchtesgaden station.  This effiecency can help give you 1-2 full hours more of sightseeing in a day in Berchtesgaden.  If you are routing to Berchtesgaden and then to other places like Munich after a car can save you a bit of time and hassle with your luggage.

Disadvantages : The extra cost of getting a rental plus the time to pick it up is a reason not to rent a car for the sole purpose of driving to Berchtesgaden.  Parking in Salzburg can also be both expensive and a huge hassle although parking in Berchtesgaden is very easy.

Window Vignette Sticker : Dricing on the Alpenstraße Road directly from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden has no toll stations and a window vignette sticker is not needed on your rental car.  Do keep in mind however that if you are going to be doing further travel on the Austrian A1 and A10 Autobahn Highways near Salzburg then the sticker is required.  Typically a window vignette sticker comes with all rentals in Austria but if you picked your car up in a different country you will need to get one from a gas station before entering the Autobahn to avoid fines.  Simple trips to Berchtesgaden or even Hallstatt you can avoid needing a sticker.

Getting To Berchtesgaden From Munich:

Route Overview : We have visited Berchtesgaden from Munich by train and returned the same day with ease.  The train from Munich to Berchtesgaden will take 2 Hours and 35-45 Minutes, with a 10-minute layover to switch trains in Freilassing.  The ticket will cost 39€ each way, but you can save a lot of money with the Bayern Day Pass ( explained below ).  Trains run from 6:23am ( 5:48 on weekends ) with returns departing until 10:10pm.  For the current schedule visit the German Bahn website HERE  or Austrian OEBB website  HERE .

Consider the Bayern Day Pass  ( more info ) if coming to Berchtesgaden from Munich and especially for roundtrip travel.  The pass covers unlimited region trains ( excluding ICE ) for the day anywhere around Bavaria and even to Salzburg ( on the Blue/Yellow Meridian Train ) starting at 25€ for 1 person and goes up 6€ per person up to 5 people.  The only downside that on Monday-Friday you can’t start your travel with these special passes until 9am, but Saturday & Sunday you can start anytime.  Make sure to check out our full list of the Best German Train Passes  ( more info ).

It can be tempting to visit Berchtesgaden by train for the day on your way to nearby Salzburg, but we wouldn’t do that.  You can get to Salzburg from Munich is just 90 minutes by train then from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden by Bus 840 in just 49 minutes.  It is a better practice to just go right to Salzburg from Munich and the pop down to Berchtesgaden as a day trip during your time there.  We also like to stay in Berchtesgaden overnight to have two days to fully see the sights.

2. By Car From Munich ( 2 Hours ):

Rental Car From Munich to Berchtesgaden

Route Overview : Getting to Berchtesgaden from Munich by car is very straightforward with 3 easy routes all taking only 2 hours.  Not only is it 30 minutes faster than taking the train from Munich to Berchtesgaden, but using a car also lets you drive directly to most of the main sites.  To get to the Eagle’s Nest you will still have to take the special bus up the private section of road from the Dokumentation center, but the Kings Lake Ferry, Jennerbahn Lift, Salt Mine, and Old Town are directly reachable by car.

Very Im portant : You need to choose your route carefully as one of the 3 options briefly takes you onto the Austrian A1 and A10 Autobahn Highways near Salzburg.  In order to drive your car or rental on these roads, you need to have a European Union travel sticker called a “vignette” in your car window.  Rentals from Austria will have this, but ones from Germany often do not.  You can ask your rental car agency for one or pick one up at a gas station for 10€ for 3 days, but not having one will result in a 200€ fine.  Unless you are also going to Salzburg, you might as well just save the 10€ and take one of the routes that avoid these sections of Autobahn highway.

Getting To Berchtesgaden From Hallein:

1. bus #41 from hallein ( 40 minutes ):.

Route Overview : Sometimes visitors want to get to Berchtesgaden from either Hallein or Werfen which can be a little confusing but it is doable even without a car.  From the Hallein Train Station, you take Bus 41  through town past the Luge Course where the route ends just shy of the German Border.  A short walk across the border matches you up with the route of Bus 848 which takes you right into Berchtesgaden.  You may find it easier to just take the train all the way to Salzburg and hop on Bus 840 instead to avoid any hassles, but the Luge can be a pretty fun place to get stranded at.  Mix in the neighboring Hallein Salt Mines and you can always make a day of it, but Berchtesgaden is still a million times more fun.

Bag Lockers & Luggage Storage:

berchtesgaden luggage lockers bag storage

Stopping in Berchtesgaden for the day while traveling between Salzburg and Munich is very popular, however, you will likely need a place to store your luggage.  Luckily there are coin-operated lockers right at the train station along the tracks for you to use.  The bag storage lockers only cost 2€ for up to 24 hours.

They have around 12 Jumbo lockers ( 90x50x85 cm ) and 16 Small lockers ( 45x35x85 cm ).  That may not sound like a lot, but because most people either stay in Berchtesgaden or pop over for the day, there usually isn’t a ton of daily competition for luggage lockers.  While dropping off your bags, consider grabbing some free brochures are the tourist information office and visitor center also located at the train station.

Getting Around Berchtesgaden:

Once you get to Berchtesgaden it is very easy to get around thanks to the compact nature of the village, an efficient bus system, and convenient Alpine lifts.  To make things even easier all of the bus use the Train Station has their central hub.  Whether it’s Bus 841 to Königssee & Jennerbahn, Bus 838 to the Documentation Center & Eagles Nest, or Bus 846 to Ramsau everything is very easy to get to.

So you can get a better idea of which Bus to take, we’ve added off of the most helpful local bus routes to the maps on each Berchtesgaden tour pages.

Eagle‘s Nest Historical Tours

All About our private Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour

Recommended by the major travel guidebooks guidebooks including rick steves, what’s so special about this tour.

Created by David and Christine Harper in 1990, this original and comprehensive tour, offered in English only, covers the Eagle’s Nest, as well as Hitler’s former HQs compound and includes a visit to the site of Hitler’s former home, the Berghof (now a ruin). This history-intensive tour is conducted by professional guides who are accredited in Third Reich / WWII history and whose mother tongue is English. They conduct the tour in an objective and comprehensive manner, making the history of the area easily understandable to all.

What is the “Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour”?

Our private, 3,5 – 4-hour, educational, 3-part tour emphasizes the historical significance of the whole mountain, not just the Eagle’s Nest teahouse.

1. Eagle’s Nest

You will board a specially equipped mountain bus for a breathtaking drive up the 6.5 km (4 mile) road with its 27% incline to a high mountain parking lot, just below the ‘Eagle’s Nest’. The original brass-lined elevator will then transport you up through the heart of Kehlstein mountain straight into the building itself. After an in-depth tour of the Eagle’s Nest (now a restaurant) you’ll have some free time to enjoy the views or refreshments.

2. Hitler’s Headquarters Compound

Your guide will take you on a driving tour around Obersalzberg, a small mountain community above Berchtesgaden. Here the history of the area’s takeover by the National Socialist Party and the transformation of the mountain into Hitler’s Southern Headquarters will be recounted. Numerous original buildings or sites where structures once stood will be pointed out and explained with the help of photographs.

3. Site of Hitler’s Former Home

Spending well over one-fourth of his twelve years in power at his “ Berghof ,” as the estate was named, the National Socialist Party’s effective  propaganda apparatus made use of Hitler’s move to the Obersalzberg mountain to present him as a man close to nature and whose Wahlheimat (chosen homeland) was Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps.

On the one hand, the repeated focus on the Führer’s presence on the mountain lent him the German roots that he did not possess, on the other, it created an image of Germany’s future leader as a man living close to the common people in an idyllic alpine countryside. Hitler and his home on the Obersalzberg provided a subsequent mass-merchandizing of the politician as an allegedly friendly and hospitable man who made time to receive and welcome hordes of German admirers and followers.

Photos of these large pilgrimage-like events, as well as postcards and picture-books of Hitler relaxing with and entertaining his associates such as Goebbels, Göring, Speer and Bormann, were widely distributed in an effort to create a Hitler myth. This “superstar” spotlighting was extraordinarily successful in contributing to Hitler’s popularity both before and after his rise to power.

However, it was also at this alpine retreat – the Berghof – that many of Hitler’s sinister plans were forged, leading to war and genocide. Though the building itself was destroyed by bombing and later demolished, our guides, with the help of photographs, recreate the Berghof’s former appearance and offer an in-depth narrative to outline the significant role Hitler’s former estate played in world history.

Times & Prices

The Eagle’s Nest Historical Tour can be booked, depending on availability, at either 8:30 a.m. or at 1:00 p.m. The meeting point for those arriving by car is Eagle’s Nest Historical Tours, located above the Berggasthof Obersalzberg Restaurant (next to Parking 1) at Obersalzberg (Salzbergstrasse 41) in Berchterchtesgaden (Germany). The tour is offered, on request and depending on availability, when the Eagle’s Nest is open, (usually from mid-May through October, weather permitting) and lasts approximately 3,5 to 4 hours. The price of the tour in 2024 is 330 € for private parties of up to six participants. The price includes our transportation around Obersalzberg and the half-day of professional guiding but does not include the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus (the price in 2023 was 30,80 € per person).

Due to the intense historical focus of this tour we do not recommend booking this tour if you have children under 8 years of age. We, as parents, find that the four-hour history-intensive tour that we offer is tough on a young child’s patience. The Eagle’s Nest can also be visited without our guided tour (see below).

How much walking is involved?

– Walk through tunnel (406 ft / 124m) for elevator ride into the Eagle’s Nest – Tour of building (about 20 steps)

Limited Mobility and Wheelchair Access

For those with limited mobility we can tailor the program to a slower pace. The Eagle’s Nest mountain buses have wheelchair ramps, however up at the Eagle’s Nest our tour participants need to go down two different flights of stairs to get into the main rooms of the building and climb back up them as well.

For those who do not feel this tour is for them or if our tour is sold out for the date you need, an alternative would be to visit the sites on you own. You simply take the Eagle’s Nest mountain bus from the Eagle’s Nest bus departure point (address: Salzbergstr. 43, Berchtesgaden, Germany). Buses depart every 25 minutes and you do not require an advance reservation.
