Where to Get a Jockey's Autograph

photo by Larry White, Pixabay

What die-hard racing fan doesn't hope they can get their favorite jockey to sign their program or teeshirt? The best place to ask for a jockey's autograph is right in front of the jockey quarters.

You can try to nab their attention after they finish the race and are walking back along the horse path to the jockey quarters. Or, before the race, try as they're leaving for the paddock. Most jockeys will oblige as they make the short walk to meet up with their horses.

Wonderful Walking Tour

This review is about the Saratoga Race Course Walking Tour. We took the walking tour with our guide Dave on a Saturday morning. We arrived a few minutes late for our tour because we couldn't locate the starting point. Dave was gracious enough to take my son and I on our own tour. The tour was so informative and interesting. Dave made it fun adding some humor to it as well. It was great. I would very highly recommend taking the walking tour, especially one of the earlier times before the race course actually opens, because it's great that not many people are around. Highly recommend. And thank you Dave, for a fantastic tour!!

Enjoyed the Horse Racing. Seating very expensive in Club House. $48 just to rent a table and must spend $25 per person to dine or drink. Parking was suppose to be free but was charged $12

Great time and fun for the family, horses are amazing and beautiful animals. Track staff were very helpful .

Yes, national treasure, New York treasure - but not what we were expecting. We had tickets at the Turf Terrace. Very old, dirty, and crowded. Food was just mediocre. Due to Covid and the whole world not having the staff to service venues such Saratoga Springs Race Track, service was "on and off". May I mention that you can call Saratoga Springs Race Track directly and ask for sales to purchase you tickets to the Turf Terrace and other restaurants there. We ordered through Ticketmaster and the day the tickets went on sale it was a feeding frenzy. Being our first time to this venue, we had no idea what seats would work out best. Now we know to call directly. Unfortunately, Saratoga Springs, the race track and the restaurants did not "stand out". Of course we must consider that during live racing meet the town is packed and everyone is doing their best to embrace the tourism trade which this town truly depends upon.

So much nicer than the sad Looking Belmont Park. It’s a beautiful building and well maintained. Lots of food options. Lots of people. You feel like you can get close to the action here. They can accommodate a large crowd. Lots of parking. We love going to watch the morning workouts.

We purchased reserved tables at the Miller Lite Picnic Tables. What a waste ! It cost $144 and the tables were in the worst location and so crammed in you could not hardly get to your table. This is such a rip off. Rest rooms are so far away and so is all of the food . The TVs to see the races were so small…..in the FREE AREAS the TVs are huge . I am not sure what they were thinking by selling these tables except maybe “ let’s rip off some people ..since there are no refunds given what can they do ?”. Do not book this area.

NYRA introduces inaugural breakfast and farm tour for upcoming track season

by Liz Bishop

NYRA introduces inaugural breakfast and farm tour for upcoming track season (WRGB)

Saratoga Springs, NY (WRGB) — We're just a couple days away from opening day at the Saratoga Racecourse, and to whet the appetite of racing fans, NYRA today introduced its newest fan experience, an idea that was supposed to happen two years ago but was put on hold by the pandemic. It's called the Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour.

On Monday they did a dry-run of a new immersive experience that takes you through some of the track's most popular highlights, starting with breakfast bright and early at the morning workouts and ending after the last race of the day--with a unique, extra added attraction. A tour of a working breeding farm!

MORE: What's coming to Opening Day at Saratoga Racetrack

The tour kicked off Saratoga Week today with a trolley ride from the main gate of the track to the Old Tavern Farm overlooking Saratoga Lake. The outing will be offered every Friday beginning July 15 and will accommodate up to 40 guests.

For 55 dollars for adults, and 25 for children, you will get a buffet breakfast at the race course to watch the horses go through their workout paces, the trolley ride to Old Tavern Farm, and then a 90-minute walking tour to see what life is like at an active thoroughbred breeding farm, as well as admission to the track for the day.

Walt Borisenok owns Old Tavern Farm. He thinks this experience will help build lifetime racing fans: "It basically gives people an enhanced thoroughbred experience....certainly, they see the excitement at Saratoga, the world class track with the horses running, but what this does, it kind of gives them the background on where these racehorses start and where they come from and what their life cycle is when they're born and then when they get to the track."

Borisenok says it's a chance for racing fans to see it all--how mares are bred, how foals are born, how they then go from weanlings to yearlings before being bought at the Yearling Sales and eventually making their way onto the racetrack. Tickets for the Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour are going fast. They're available at NYRA.com.

Beyond the race track: 10 essential things to do in Saratoga County this summer

  • Updated: Aug. 11, 2022, 1:54 p.m. |
  • Published: Jul. 21, 2022, 6:00 a.m.

Each summer, thousands of visitors descend upon the city of Saratoga Springs, drawn by the spectacle of live thoroughbred horse racing at a beloved Victorian racetrack. But there’s more to Saratoga than the 40-day meet, which runs from mid-July to Sept. 5, and those looking to explore will find plenty to see and do.

Here’s a list of fun activities for tourists eager to discover the wealth of natural, artistic and historic beauty in Saratoga County.

Adirondack Cruise & Charter Co.

Adirondack Cruise & Charter Co. in Saratoga Springs.

Get out on the water

It’s hard to think of a better place to beat the summer heat than a trip to Saratoga Lake, located southeast of Saratoga Springs. With its breathtaking views and peaceful vibe, the lake is an excellent place for a boat ride, swim or picnic. Adirondack Cruise & Charter Co . offers public and private cruises on two boats: a vintage replica fantail launch and a nine-passenger pontoon boat. If you want to get even closer to the water, head to the Kayak Shak in Saratoga Springs, rent a kayak, paddleboard or hammocraft and spend some time on Fish Creek. Swimmers will want to visit Brown’s Beach , the only public beach on Saratoga Lake, or check out the beach at Moreau Lake State Park in Gansevoort.

The Saratoga Automobile Museum

The Saratoga Automobile Museum at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Go to a museum

Whatever your interest, there’s probably a museum for you in Saratoga County. History? The New York State Military Museum and Veterans Research Center in Saratoga Springs is a treasure trove of artifacts dating from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror. The Ballston Spa-based Brookside Museum , housed in a resort hotel building dating back to 1792, is a great place to learn local history. Sports? There’s the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame , which celebrates thoroughbred racing in America. Art? The Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs is a showcase for the richness and diversity of contemporary art. Cars? The Saratoga Automobile Museum provides a rich tour of automotive history. Play? The Children’s Museum at Saratoga reopened this summer in a new location, the Lincoln Bath building at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Visit Saratoga National Historical Park

A must for Revolutionary War buffs, this scenic national park preserves the site of the Battles of Saratoga, a turning point in the war. Parkgoers can take self-guided tours of Saratoga Battlefield , visit the country plantation of Revolutionary War general Philip Schuyler, see Saratoga Monument, which commemorates the American victory in the Battles of Saratoga and explore Victory Woods, 22 acres making the final encampment of the British army prior to their 1777 surrender.

Explore Saratoga Spa State Park

A National Historic Landmark, Saratoga Spa State Park is much more than a pleasant place to walk around or picnic. There are two places to swim: the Peerless Pool complex, which includes a kiddie pool and waterslides, and the historic Victoria Pool, built in the early 1930s. Visitors can bathe in Saratoga’s naturally carbonated mineral waters at Roosevelt Baths & Spa or drink from one of the many free-flowing springs in the park. Music lovers will want to check the calendar - the Saratoga Performing Arts Center is one of the country’s top outdoor music venues and also the summer home of the New York City Ballet and Philadelphia Orchestra.

Village of Schuyler

The village of Schuyler, provided by Mayor Daniel Carpenter.

Spend a day in a village

Saratoga County is home to many charming villages. You’ll find distinctive restaurants and shops, attractive riverfront parks and an abundance of recreation opportunities in Schuylerville , which sits on the Hudson River. In Round Lake , you can attend a theater or musical event at the Round Lake Auditorium, home of a pipe organ designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016, walk or bike the 11.5-mile Zim Smith Trai l or bask in the quiet and beauty of the Round Lake Preserve. Uniquely positioned at the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk rivers, Waterford is considered the gateway to the Erie Canal and is a great spot for watching boats.

Hang out in Congress Park

Located in the heart of downtown Saratoga Springs, Congress Park is a fine place to relax for a few hours. There’s a historic wooden carousel, mineral springs where you can taste the waters of Saratoga and free concerts throughout July and August. Guided walking tours provide a crash course in Spa City history, and the Saratoga Springs History Museum tells the city’s story through three floors of exhibits.

NYRA to expand Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tours for 2023 Season

NYRA Breakfast and Farm Tour

May 12, 2023

Saratoga Race Course will offer fan-favorite package featuring breakfast at the track and tour of area breeding farms with expanded days and partners

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (May 12, 2023) The New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) today announced plans to significantly enhance opportunities for fans to experience the Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour package, which debuted to sold out crowds each Friday in its inaugural season.

Expanded due to its overwhelming popularity in 2022, the Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour will this year be offered every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during the Saratoga meet and will now feature two active thoroughbred breeding farms. The tours will accommodate up to 52 guests each day beginning Friday, July 14, and will conclude on Friday, September 1.

This year the tours will be offered every Wednesday at Song Hill Thoroughbreds, 290 County Road 75 in Mechanicville, NY; and every Thursday and Friday at Old Tavern Farm, 45 Brown Road, in nearby Stillwater.

The all-inclusive fan experience package, presented by the Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA), features:

  • Buffet breakfast at Saratoga Race Course;
  • Opportunity to watch world-class thoroughbreds during morning training;
  • Round-trip, trolley ride from Saratoga Race Course to Song Hill Thoroughbreds on Wednesdays or to Old Tavern Farm on Thursdays and Fridays;
  • 60 to 90-minute guided walking tour of an active thoroughbred breeding farm;
  • Admission to Saratoga Race Course.

The Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm package is $85 for adults and $35 for children 12 and under. Tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis and may be purchased at NYRA.com.

“Last year’s inaugural Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm package was such a huge success that we have expanded it to three days per week and added a second thoroughbred breeding farm to accommodate demand,” said NYRA Vice President of Communications Pat McKenna. “The opportunity for fans to go behind-the-scenes to experience this side of the sport clearly resonated beyond all expectations. We thank Old Tavern Farm for helping us launch this innovative program last summer and welcome them back alongside our newest partner, Song Hill Thoroughbreds, in addition to our presenting sponsor, CDTA.”

The itinerary begins with Breakfast at Saratoga, featuring a buffet at Saratoga Race Course between 7 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. with a backdrop of world-class thoroughbreds participating in morning training. Guests may arrive for breakfast at any time during these hours.

At 9:45 a.m., fans will board one of two CDTA trolleys at the Clubhouse entrance and embark on a picturesque 15-minute ride to Old Tavern Farm or 20-minute excursion to Song Hill Thoroughbreds. Upon arrival, guests will be led on an experiential walking tour by the farm’s owners and expert staff. Fans will return to Saratoga Race Course at approximately 11:45 a.m., well before racing gets underway at approximately 1 p.m.

Song Hill Thoroughbreds, owned by Jim and Tina Bond, was established in 2005. The expansive 100-acre horse farm is home to mares, foals, weanlings, yearlings and retired thoroughbreds. Features include an all-encompassing, sophisticated facility that is detail oriented, meticulously clean and was designed with the horses’ comfort in mind. It operates alongside Bond Racing Stables and is focused on breeding, sales and turning out champion thoroughbreds.

“We are truly honored to be part of the Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm program as it expands in just its second year of operation,” said Song Hill Thoroughbreds Chief Operating Officer and Managing Partner Tina Bond, who is likewise vice president of the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association. “There is something magical about visiting the horses at their earliest stages of life and gaining a better understanding of how they are loved and nurtured as well as prepared for the prospect of a racing career. We look forward to educating and welcoming horse lovers of all ages to Song Hill Thoroughbreds this summer.”

Old Tavern Farm is a private boutique thoroughbred-breeding operation in Saratoga Springs that was founded in 2016 by Walt and Michelle Borisenok. Located just a short distance from historic Saratoga Race Course, Old Tavern Farm has been developed into a state-of-the-art facility focused on the breeding and sale of thoroughbreds to compete at the highest levels of the sport. The name Old Tavern was derived from the 19th century tavern that once graced the property.

“We are honored to once again be part of this exciting program after launching it last year in partnership with NYRA and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders,” said Old Tavern Farm founder and owner Walt Borisenok. “Throughout the inaugural season, we had the opportunity to meet hundreds of fans who gained a new appreciation for what takes place on a working thoroughbred breeding farm. We look forward to welcoming new and returning guests who will walk away with a greater appreciation for how thoroughbred racing and breeding support our local economy.”

“The Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour was a fantastic new addition to the Saratoga experience in 2022, highlighting the importance of the New York State breeding industry,” said Najja Thompson, Executive Director of New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. “We were thrilled with its inaugural success that spawned this expansion for the 2023 season and extend our thanks to Old Tavern Farm and Song Hill Thoroughbreds, two of the leading breeding farms in our state. We also want to thank our partners at NYRA for spearheading this extraordinary opportunity.”

The Saratoga Breakfast and Breeding Farm Tour is presented by CDTA. In addition to transporting guests to and from Old Tavern Farm and Song Hill Thoroughbreds aboard a pair of classic trolleys, CDTA is the presenting sponsor of Breakfast at Saratoga, which is offered daily at Saratoga Race Course from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. (excludes Travers Day).

“We are excited to continue our partnership with NYRA and enhance this year’s experience alongside Old Tavern Farm and Song Hill Thoroughbreds for the 2023 racing season," said CDTA’s Director of Business Development, Jonathan Scherzer. “This experience is a great way to connect fans and visitors to the historic Saratoga Race Course and the rich history of horse racing. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone back on board our iconic trolley for an enjoyable 'Summer in Saratoga' experience.”

Highlighted by the 154th edition of the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers on August 26 and the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney on August 5, the 40-day summer meet will open on Thursday, July 13 and continue through Monday, September 4. Following the four-day opening weekend, racing will be conducted five days a week, Wednesdays through Sundays, apart from closing week, when the 2023 summer meet will conclude on Labor Day.
