Aruba Jeep Tour Guide

When you think of Aruba, you likely think of beaches, palm trees or “Aruba, Jamaica, ooo I wanna take ya” sang to a swaying tune—shoutout to the Beach Boys. All of which are included (or sang) on the little island, but do not make it up in its entirety. All it takes is an Aruba jeep tour to understand. Where there are methodical aqua waves hitting soft wide sand, and lounge chairs positioned to look into them, there are also waves of rage whose sense of anger keep you from going too close but positioning your jeep to keep your eyes locked in.

Your All-Day Adventure

The east and windward side of the 69.08 square mile island is full of rocky cliffs, natural bridges, caves, and roaring waters. It’s decorated with cactus, roads made up of concrete blocks, and dusty air. Explorers, thrill-seekers, adventurers, and the curious flock to Arikok National Park and beyond to experience Aruba’s natural beauty. The east side is home to many hidden gems.

As easy as it is to get stuck in a lounge chair drinking umbrella drinks on the beach, it is widely recommended that you rent your own jeep or schedule a tour to experience this side of the island. If you decide to be your own tour-guide (which I recommend), follow this Aruba Jeep Tour itinerary to ensure a fun and adventurous day.

Before Your Trip

Rent a Jeep or UTV; both are great options. With a jeep, you get less of the loud motor noise which by the end of the day can get irritating, and makes it tougher to talk with your travel buddies. Though with a UTV, it feels less bumpy with the great suspension and gives a more authentic, off-roading feel. Note: This trip CANNOT be done in a car.

The UTV on the right is from Offroad Evolution Rental & Tours Aruba . For a full day, a two-seater is $240, four-seater is $280, and six-seater is $350. They were a great and helpful company, bringing the UTV to our hotel and giving us a pass for returning a little late! The jeep was rented through Aruba Royal Car Rental. For a newer model, it will cost around $175 for a full day and can be driven to your hotel on the day you choose.

Pack a Cooler; what is an off-roading adventure without a few beers? Not near as much fun. And if you have beer , you need snacks! Make a few sandwiches and bring chips or pretzels to hold you over until you come across restaurants – remember, you’re cruising around the desert so they are few and far between. Also, bottles of water might come in handy too…

What to Wear; stick with athletic wear. A tank top and shorts with flip-flops is perfect. Wear your swimsuit underneath. If you are nervous about walking on rocky terrain, bring along a pair of tennis shoes. And bring a hat at your own risk—it’s windy!

Fill Your Backpack;

  • Towel; for the Natural Pool and any beach stops
  • Sunscreen ; the wind may keep you cool but this is the desert land and an open-air Jeep isn’t forgiving when it comes to the heat of the sun
  • Camera ; there are one-of-a-kind photos you won’t want to miss
  • Wallet ; access into Arikok Natural Park is $11 per person. There will also be a few bars and restaurant options along your journey
  • Grab a Map; I’ve included one below, but your rental service should provide you with one. You can also save a map to your camera roll or ask the front desk.
  • Toilet Paper; there are a few restrooms along the way—but when you gotta go, you gotta go!

Aruba Jeep Tour Itinerary

Assuming your Aruba jeep tour will start on the west side of the island (where all the low and high-rise hotels are located), start making your way north. I recommend getting an early start, no later than 9:00 A.M. It will take the whole day to make a number of stops and you don’t want to be rushed.

California Lighthouse

As one of Aruba’s scenic trademarks, construction of the lighthouse goes back to 1914 and is named after a sunken ship near shore, the S.S. California. With water out in the distance and sand dunes and cactus in between, come to take in gorgeous views of the island. If you’re interested, you can take a tour for $8 though I see this as more of a quick stop for pictures. There are also small snacks, drinks, and trinkets for sale.

Alto Visto Chapel

Once you’re finished at the California Lighthouse, start making your way to the east edge of the island where you will see the raging waves and dirt roads begin. I don’t consider the chapel a “must-do” but if you’re ready to get out of the jeep for a few minutes, have it on your list to see everything, or just want to drink a beer without bouncing around, make a quick stop! (If church isn’t in session, it’s acceptable to drink beer……. ha)

Built in 1952, the bright yellow chapel is the site of the original Catholic Church from 1750. You can reach the destination by a winding road lined with white crosses.

Baby Bridge & Natural Bridge

Large waves paired with strong winds and limestone rock formed a number of natural bridges. First, you will run into Baby Bridge—the appetizer, if you will. At 25 feet, and only 3 feet above sea level, its name stands true but still makes for a great stop on your journey. It became more popular when, unexpectedly, the Natural Bridge collapsed in 2005 (yikes). It still remains one of the top island attractions.

There is no fee to visit the bridges, and there is a snack shop/restrooms ($1 fee) near the Natural Bridge. Once you hit these, backtrack slightly and start making your way to the entrance of Arikok National Park in San Fuego.

Arikok National Park

Now get ready for some true off-roading on your jeep tour in Aruba. The bouncing around in your seat is all worth it for the spectacular views and adventurous memories. Arikok National Park makes up 20% of the island. Surround yourself with dirt roads that kick back the dust, rocky cliffs amongst the desert land, little lizards as quick as a wink, and the Caribbean Sea crashing across the natural rock formations. There is a reason jeep/UTV tours and excursions are a popular recommendation on the island.

view of aruba desert land while on aruba jeep tour

Once you get to the park’s Visitor Center, you will pay $11 per person to enter, get your wristband, and you are free to roam the terrain. From here to the Natural Pool is 3.5 miles—keep in mind its takes a bit since you are not going fast.

  • Natural Pool ; also known as “Conchi,” this place is one of the most beautiful (and simply amazing!) places I have ever seen. Experience a swimming hole surrounded by massive rocks that protect you from rough waters. You will park above the Natural Pool and climb down the steps, bringing you to rocky sand and jaw-dropping views. Cross your fingers that you get here on a day when the waters are calm enough to swim. (There are days park employees will tell you not to swim, but feel free to if it looks safe. I’ve been in three times, two of which were told not to go in. There’s no one patrolling and if it’s not safe—you’ll know. Trust me.) Tip: bring snorkel gear and check out all of the fish below you!

  • Boca Prins Beach + Bar ; one of my favorite spots on the island. This restaurant serves some of the best tropical drinks. Enjoy some needed shade at this rustic, open-air bar and take in the sound of waves and wind. There is something serene about being the only establishment in the desert-area and overlooking the (what seems like) never-ending coastline.

boca prins bar and restaurant sign

  • Fontein Cave ; While over in this area, check out the caves to explore the rock formations and ancient drawings of Arawak Indians. Note: if you are claustrophobic, you are going to be a little uncomfortable! You don’t have to spend long here, but it’s a cool place to check out at least once.

fontein cave

  • Fish Pool ; need a pedicure? The fish got your back. Yes, you read that right. Outside the caves, follow a trail leading to an abandoned farmhouse where you will come up on a small bridge. Underneath are schools of fish ready to feast on your feet! Dip your toes in and watch the little fish swarm around you, nibbling on any skin that needs removing—it doesn’t hurt, but it does tickle.

Boca Grandi Kite Surfing Beach

After exploring Arikok National Park, it will be time to greet civilization again. But this doesn’t end your jeep tour. As you continue to make your way south, don’t leave out Boca Grandi. Though this beach isn’t one with lounge chairs, palapas, and tropical drinks, it’s one where you will enjoy the tranquility of mother nature’s work. It is interesting that a place full of strong waves pushing you back towards shore has the capability to make you feel at such peace.

boca grandi beach with kites flying above

You will likely share this beach with no more than 8 people—not counting the kite surfers showing off their skills. From shore, look out into the white caps forming from the dark blue water, with colorful kites sailing above. From the ocean, feel the rush of salt water as your body lets loose into the ocean waves.

boca grandi beach with sand and green seaweed

This is my favorite stop of the day. Jump in the ocean and experience the waves. Come out and enjoy a beer where you feel like you’ve found a hidden gem and no one could find you if they tried. Finish it off with an afternoon catnap in the sand before hopping back into the jeep. Note: there are no restrooms, drinks, or food here. Find more information on this beach, and others on the island, over at Beach Guide: Aruba .

mini yeti of champagne and coors light on beach

You cooled off, took a little snooze, and fed the donkey’s a few chips as you were leaving Boca Grandi (they’re friendly). And now, you’re ready for more on your Aruba jeep tour. Hopefully…because there is no shortage of fun at Baby Beach! And you’re only about 30 minutes from “home.”

Come meet your new favorite bartenders, enjoy the water more comparable to a bath than a wave pool, and enjoy this half-moon lagoon on the southern tip of Aruba. The shallow waters make it a perfect spot for families and everyone can enjoy the snorkeling, shaded bar area, and Flintstone-themed fun. I would recommend eating here if it weren’t for my final stop…

big mama statue at baby beach

Finish off your day with a locals experience. About 15 minutes north of Baby Beach is a fresh, inexpensive, casual seafood restaurant right on the water. Did I mention fresh? The seafood was caught that morning so be prepared for the catch of the day. Order your fish at the counter along with large shrimp you will peel yourself, fries, onions, plantain, and tartar sauce.  Once you get your number, take a seat at a wooden picnic table, and wait for your food to be served—all in one big bowl. Time to dig in. Note: Cash only. Tip: They have a great island hot sauce!

self guided jeep tour aruba

That’s going to end your day when you are likely very full and therefore, very tired. Drive back the remaining 15 minutes or so and crawl into bed—you’ve earned it.

Off-Roading Tips

  • It is okay to get lost! You’re going to see a ton of other tours and explorers around who can help you navigate if needed.
  • Take your time; prepare to be out there all day. Rarely are you driving fast and there is so much to see.
  • Take tons of photos ; It’s tough to explain some of these experiences. Make sure to have a camera to show your friends.
  • Don’t be hungover; I won’t mention if this tip is from experience or not, but it’s very hot, very bumpy, and requires a decent amount of energy.

I recommend a jeep tour in Aruba whether you are spending a long weekend or a month on the island. There are natural wonders to see and fun memories to make among the striking landscapes unlike anywhere else.

Awesome app.

My husband I went to Aruba for our anniversary in Oct. 2022 and we like to vacation off the beaten path whenever possible so that includes taking our time with taking in the sights. I purchased the full app as we toured the island in our own timing and it was truly amazing. The details of the narration and the history of the island allowed us to stop and go whenever we pleased or not depending on the descriptive site. A must have for anyone who plans on visiting the island and not wanting to pay for an individual or company tour guide. Can’t wait to go back so we can use it again . 💜

We had a fantastic time using this GPS guide in Aruba. It took us to interesting places we wouldn't have found on our own, showing us the island's history and variety in just three hours. The option to drive around at our own speed was perfect, and the app was easy to use, making our adventure even better.
We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed using our app during your adventure around the Aruba. It's wonderful to know it enhanced your trip and provided useful information. Thanks for sharing your positive feedback! Happy trails on your future expeditions with our app. 🐻🏞️🎧
I started with buying just the Noord section of the tour and then bought the other two as well! Works well. Loved the narration and it was cool to learn a little bit about the history of the area as we drove around and admired the natural beauty of the area
Thanks! So happy to hear that you liked all our tours in Aruba! The island is jam-packed with fascinating history, fun facts, and rich stories and I’m so glad we were able to bring those to you. Thanks again!

Im leaning towards renting my own jeep for me and the wife. I was just curious if anyone knows how easy it is to find your way around the island? When you rent a jeep are you provided a map of interests such as the natural pool? We are also thinking of just doing a half day. Any comments or suggestions?

It is very easy to find your way around the island once you master their street signs, but you won't see any of those once you start 4 wheeling anyway :) Your rental company should give you a map and it will have all the points of interest on it. If your company is good, then they will even draw you some special trails to follow in your jeep for some good 4 x 4 action. It's the only island that we stopped at that you drive on the right side of the road, so it was a good choice for us and safer, too. We had a great time!

None of our gang drives standard shift  Are there automatics available for rent?

Thanks! Do you have a favorite company you like to use?

Arubalisa

Yes, fairly easy to get around.

We usually rent through Economy Car Rental Sorry I don't know if they will do a one day rental. We take their Daihatsu Terios All Wheel Drive (AWD) which is fine for navigating through Arikok National Park which is where you need the AWD the most. The Daihatsu is a 4 door versus the 2 door Suzukis with a little bit of extra space. HIGHLY reccommend renting a vehicle with a hard top and a/c. Open air jeeps are great in 75 degree weather, but at 87 degrees and the hot sun beating down on you...you will appreciate the a/c

No matter which one, the car rental company will give you a map. The island is only something like 26 miles long if that. Unfortunately there is no one main road which makes a loop around the island. Beaches for swimming and snorkleling are all along the west coast of the island as well as the main road. Beaches along the eastern coast are wild, rough and DANGEROUS to swimmers!

For a one day visitor, although it involves partial back tracking (sorry there is no way of getting past the Natural Bridge to Arikok National Park, UNLESS you are on a horse...) the spots you would want to visit include: (starting just north of the Palm Beach high rise hotel area-

California sand dunes

California Lighthouse

Alto Vista Chapel

Natural Bridge

On the way back (you will be back tracking toward the high rise hotel area) visit

Arashi Beach and Malmok.

Continue south through the high rise area to Eagle Beach. Then through downtown Oranjestad. Then onto the eastern coastline

Spanish Lagoon

Rodgers Beach

Grapefields Bay

Boca Grande

these last few of which are all located within Arikok National Park as well as the White Sand dunes

For the adventurous, the Natural Pool is worth a visit. HOWEVER it is a very long, very rough 4 X 4 ride. I HIGHLY reccommend a horse back riding tour to get there. Either way to get there you will have a sore back end, HOWEVER you won't have the worry of losing a transmission and THEN having to pay for it! Doesn't really matter what kind of insurance you have, the rental operators do not take kindly to those who they feel are "abusing" their vehicles.

We did the "jeep" tour last month, and it was a blast.

There were 19 of us from our message board who rented a total of 5 Diahatsus. They were AWD, AC, and automatic. Map included. Price through Hertz including damage waiver or something like that was $90, but they give an extra discount to AARP, etc. Advantage of Hertz is that they are one of the companies that has vehicles available at the cruise ship terminal. Reserve ahead of time on their website. We headed first to Baby Beach, and then wound our way around the island (some caves, natural bridge, etc., and ended up at the California Lighthouse around sunset. I agree that the Natural Pool road is too rough-we started down it, but it would have taken too much time at a snail's pace. Locals told us road was horrible, and we saw enough to confirm it. Otherwise, most roads are rough but fun to try to drive.

Great day! Have fun,

Try it you will not regret it! Do it on your own though.

I am glad that we went on a guided tour because some of the off roads we went on I did not think that it would be possible to drive. We did see a couple of vehicles on their own not being able to get back up the hills.

I agree that the Natural Pool road is too rough-we started down it, but it would have taken too much time at a snail's pace. Locals told us road was horrible, and we saw enough to confirm it. Otherwise, most roads are rough but fun to try to drive.
I was part of the ABC tour that goes to the natural pool and it is not to be missed. We had a few independent jeeps following us to the pool and out. The experienced guides know the best route up and down and around the boulders along the way. So, more than likely you could catch up with a guide at some point and follow them.

davela2

We just got back from Aruba. Go for it! Yes, the road is VERY rocky. We actually went off road from the now collapsed Natural Bridge to the Natural Pool (few people do this, most backtrack to the more main road). But you could take the paved roads to the start of the road down to the pool, then go from there. take your time, but it's definately worth it!

We rented a 4x4 jeep ourselves for the day and it was great. They do give you a map- although they told us we couldn't go around the whole island- we found a way(except through the park) once we got to Baby Beach we drove the trail behind it and were in a deserted part of the island for a good 1 1/2 hours ( a little scary) we didn't see another vehicle the whole time- we just figured we'd find the main road at some point and we did. We just kept following the coastline. It was quite rocky but had no problem with the jeep. We saw everything we wanted and took our time- we did it in a day. I would highly recommend doing it yourself rather than on a tour. We horseback rode to go to the natural pool and go through the Arikok National Park.

Beachbound2006

We're thinking about renting a jeep for the day...I'm a little nervous after reading about how bad the roads are getting out to the Natural Pool. That is the one place we definitely want to go to, and would much rather rent a jeep for the day not do a jeep tour....Any advice?????

We must have takent the same route! We went from the now collapsed Natural Bridge, to the Natural Pool. Seems like it took about an hour, through back roads near the coast. There were a couple of times where we had to have one of us get out, just to figure out how to go over some rocks. It was a GREAT time!

Go for it! It's really not that bad, if you are in a Jeep (not some other smaller 4 wheel drive SUV). The road is bad from the entrance to the park, but that's half the fun :-)

TropicalSnowflake

TropicalSnowflake

This is a must do in Aruba! Several years ago my DH and I rented a small 4x4 through Thrifty. We followed the map to the Natural Bridge (still standing) and Natural Pool. The roads were bumpy, but we live in Vermont and most roads here are questionable so it was nothing new to us. We can imagine someone from a city having issues...:D

Instead of backtracking to get back, we were adventurous and tried to keep going around around as best we could. We got lost. I have NO idea where we were and I could not even figure it out on the map. At one point, we pulled over and walked to a secluded beach to cool off.

When we started back, still "lost", we just decided that at every intersection we would follow the major flow of traffic figuring that eventually we'd end up in a town that WAS on the map. Seriously, it's a small island and eventually you have to get back to a town.

It was the second best excursion we ever did (cave tubing in Belize being the first) on a cruise. If we weren't bringing our kids on the next cruise to Aruba, we'd do it again. When they are older, we'll take them...but probably follow the roads a little better.

I know it was a while ago, but can you tell me if your experience with Hertz was OK in Aruba? I've just heard mixed reviews, but I did reserve with them since other were sold out. Anything you can share?

I am trying to contact them about a tour for 10. They don't respond to my e-mail and there phone number was not in service today. Any help???? Does anyone if when you book a Safari do you have to pay 100% upfront???

tattered sign with words "welcome to the natural pool" in aruba

The Aruba Natural Pool and Indian Cave Jeep Safari is one of the most exciting things to do on the island. This adventure takes visitors deep into the Arikok National Forest, where a jeep is the only way to navigate the rugged terrain.

It’s a bumpy ride, and there are some rocky hikes along the way, but pack some good shoes and it will be well worth the effort. I always bring my hiking shoes – not just to Aruba, but any of the islands. The hiking is super underrated in my opinion!

Along the way, you’ll get to see another side of Aruba you’ll be dreaming about for days – and even years – after.

After leaving the Arikok Natural Pool, drive to the Fontein Cave. Explore the history of Aruba by entering the Fontein Cave. Inside, you will discover ancient Indian drawings and more.

How to Get to Aruba National Park

It takes around 40 minutes to drive from the hotel zone of Aruba in the Noord part of the island where most hotels are located, to reach Arikok. To get there, yo u can rent a vehicle, book a guided tour, or take a taxi to reach the entrance.

The only way to navigate the rugged terrain is by a 4x4 vehicle - similar to St Lucia's mountaineous island. You can’t get to the natural pool without a 4x4. You can self-drive to the park or take an organized Arikok National Park 4x4 tour which will include transportation from your hotel.

I don't like recommending ATVs as they can damage the island's delicate ecosystem.

Once you arrive at the park, be sure to pick up an Arikok National Park map from the park's visitor center. This map will guide you through the park's trails, caves, and historic sites. Don't forget to add these must-see attractions to your itinerary !

There's really no bad time to go to Aruba , so pack your bags, grad your face cover, and get ready for an off-roading adventure!

Arikok National Park Things to Do

Whether you've chosen to join an organized tour or self-driving, here's the low down on the best things to do in Arikok National Park:

Start your visit at the Sustainable Visitor Center to learn about the park's ecosystem, history, and cultural heritage. The park features several historic sites, including the remains of a gold mine and plantation houses.

The Weekend Jetsetter

A Weekend on “One Happy Island” | 48 Hours in Aruba

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Posted By: theweekendjetsetter January 28, 2016

Aruba is a dream destination for weekend jetsetters purely because of its size – at 20 miles long and 6 miles wide, you can totally see it all in two days. Of course that doesn’t mean you won’t want to stay for longer (there’s something about that year-round perfect weather). But if you have 48 hours in Aruba , I’ve got the guide for you.

48 Hours in Aruba

First of all, when booking your 48 hours in Aruba you should completely ignore warnings about the “off season” and Weather.com rain predictions. I have it on good authority (multiple Aruban residents) that this is false. Aruba is very dry and rarely sees rainfall. In fact, when I visited in November with my cousin Carly smack dab in the middle of the off season, it rained once for about ten minutes. There’s a reason why it’s nicknamed “One Happy Island!”

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

48 Hours in Aruba: Go On an Off Road Adventure

As I mentioned, Aruba is a tiny island that’s easy to explore. Yet most visitors stick to the same cluster of high rise hotels and resorts during their stay. It’s easy to see why – Palm Beach and Eagle Beach are both gorgeous, and once you plop yourself down in front of that shimmering Caribbean water, it’s going to be tough to pull away. But if you get the chance to go (quite literally) off the beaten path you will discover Aruba’s untouched wilderness, unique desert landscapes and cool rock formations.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The best way to see Aruba when you’ve only got a day to explore? Rent UTVs and hit the island’s “other side.” The Aruba you’ll find there is quite different, with very little development and barely any paved roads.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

We looked into several options for exploring this part of the island, including ATV tours and Jeep rentals. In the end, we decided to rent UTVs (vehicles that sit two people and have a little roof) and strike out on our own. I ended up renting from Roadrunner ATV Aruba because they were the only company I could find that didn’t have complaints from fellow tourists saying they’d been scammed somehow. I was a bit nervous as they didn’t seem to have many testimonials, but they were recommended in Fodor’s so I just decided to trust my gut. Turns out, it was the perfect decision and we ended up having an amazing adventure-filled day.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The Roadrunneer ATV Aruba team was beyond accommodating and friendly, bringing the UTVs to our hotel along with a map of the area to help us plot our course. They pointed out all the spots that might be of interest on the island and even gave us a few local hints about shortcuts and where to eat if we got hungry. We had actually shown up to meet them 30 minutes late because we got lost coming back from breakfast, and they were nice enough to allow us to hold onto the UTVs for an additional 30 minutes so we could still have a full 8-hour day.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The first stop on our self-guided tour was the California Lighthouse , located on the northwest tip of Aruba near Arashi Beach. It was named after a ship that sank off the coast of Aruba in 1910, and now functions mainly as a tourist attraction. I wished we could have climbed up for what I’m sure was an even more amazing view of the island, but unfortunately it was closed off to visitors.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Next we drove down the rocky coast, admiring the gorgeous view with hardly another human in sight. The only signs of civilization we spotted were the occasional beach campers, or shack-like buildings built along the beach.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

We made our way to the Alto Visto Chapel , a tiny and picturesque chapel that was actually the first Catholic church built in Aruba in 1750 by a Spanish missionary. It’s bright yellow and exists on its own in the middle of nature at the end of a winding road.

It was here that I became really happy that we had decided to rent UTVs and do our own thing versus taking a tour. There was a tour group at the chapel consisting of 20 vehicles, all following the leader. Traveling in such a huge group would have been a bummer on its own, but aside from that everyone on the tour was covered in dirt from the other vehicles around them. We stayed behind and bought some fresh coconut water, giving the tour group time to get well ahead of us.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Our next destination was Arikok National Park , one of Aruba’s top attractions for adventure-seekers. On the way, we stumbled across the remnants of an old gold mill, another part of Aruba’s story from the 19th century when the island experienced a gold rush.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Arikok National Park is home to lizards, rattlesnakes, owls and herds of goats and donkeys, although we only came across the latter two during our explorations. It’s reachable by car, but if you want to visit the park’s hidden treasure, the Natural Pool , you’ll need an ATV or Jeep.

As we made our way down to the Natural Pool, things got a little hairy. Well, not really, but driving essentially down a cliff was personally terrifying for me. Fortunately our UTVs had it covered, and we made it safely to the parking area before walking the rest of the way.

Natural Pool, 48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The Natural Pool was by far the most crowded place we visited during the day, but it was well worth the off road adventure. As waves crashed and sprayed around us, we swam in calm waters in a clear blue pool surrounded by unique rock formations. It felt amazing to rinse the desert grime off of my face and cool off before jumping back in the UTVs. I was sad to notice that some people had thrown cigarettes out on the rocks around the pool. I can’t imagine coming all this way into the middle of a natural area the country has worked hard to preserve, and then doing something so inconsiderate as leaving my trash. Don’t be one of those people!

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Our final destination of the day was Baby Beach , and after almost 5 hours of bumpy off roading and being sprayed by mud and dirt, we were looking forward to an hour of relaxation and food.

Baby Beach was definitely more of a locals scene than Palm Beach and Eagle Beach had been. While there was a good mix of tourists, there were also plenty of families from Aruba hanging out on the sand and swimming. I can see why they like it there – it’s so out of the way, the hordes can’t reach it!

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Starving, we made a beeline for Baby Beach Snack , a beach shack that serves staples like hamburgers, chicken tenders and fried shrimp. After not eating for the entire day, it was heaven. Baby Beach Snack also rents snorkel equipment for $15, which is nice since there is a coral reef off of the beach (beware, there is another restaurant next door that charges more for food and snorkel equipment). We had brought our own goggles so we swam out to catch a glance of little fish swimming around the edges.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The one things that’s very strange and somewhat off putting about Baby Beach is its location right next to Aruba’s oil refinery. If you look to the right, you can clearly see the refinery. However, it didn’t seem to deter the locals from enjoying the Caribbean Sea so I wasn’t too bothered by it. While tourism is Aruba’s number one industry, oil is its second largest.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

I would have to say that this self-guided UTV tour was my favorite part of our 48 hours in Aruba, even though it ended up costing more ($200) than my flight did. It offered the unique opportunity to explore the island’s historical sights and natural wonders at our own pace, and was definitely more my style than lounging in a beach chair all day (If you read last week’s post about Martinique , I confessed that I don’t love the beach). I had never imagined Aruba as a destination adventure before, but it exceeded my expectations in every way.

48 Hours in Aruba: Where to Stay

If you’re looking for an affordable hotel in Aruba (so you can afford the previously mentioned UTV adventure, perhaps?), I highly recommend Pauline’s Apartments . The complex is located about a fifteen minute walk from the beach and very close to a supermarket and my favorite restaurant on the island (more on that later!). For $90 per night, I was able to rent what was basically a large studio apartment with a bed, kitchen, small living space and private bathroom.

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

While we were definitely off the beaten tourist path, I felt safe in the neighborhood, especially since the entrance to my room was secured behind a locked gate. A quick walk around the area confirmed my sense of security; most of the surrounding homes were really nice. I loved how colorful everything was!

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Pauline’s Apartments even arranges an airport pick up for $20 (a taxi would be about $22), which is totally worth it since the owner picks you up herself and points out places of interest along the way.

Amsterdam Manor, Aruba, hotel

If price isn’t a big deal, Amsterdam Manor is a great property located right on the water. I loved the traditional Dutch-style architecture and yellow and white colors of the hotel, and its bar that’s literally on the beach can’t be beat. While there are a ton of hotels in Aruba, I liked that Amsterdam Manor was located a little bit out of the way from the all-inclusive tourist scene.

Note: the above section contains affiliate links to Booking.com, which means I earn a small commission on bookings. As usual, everything you read here expresses my real opinion and is based on experience.

48 Hours in Aruba: Where to Eat & Drink

We were determined to try some authentic Aruban food during our 48 hours in Aruba, but I wasn’t actually sure what that might be.  You see, Aruba is a mash up of so many cultures: it’s just off the coast of Venezuela so there are plenty of Latin influences, yet it’s technically part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, so there are many Dutch residents. I was surprised to learn that there are people of 40 different nationalities living in Aruba, quite an impressive number for such a tiny place!

We finally found a restaurant that fit the bill called Gasparito , an Aruban-owned spot in an old Cunucu-style home. Luckily for me, it was also located just two blocks away from my home base for the weekend, Pauline’s Apartments.

Gasparito, Authentic Aruban Restaurant | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

The restaurant was small and practically empty, with only two other parties dining there at the same time as us. Usually this is awkward, but at Gasparito we barely noticed because the owner, Dan, kept us entertained for nearly two hours with stories, jokes and riddles. I’m not even exaggerating here, he was literally a one man show who had us almost in tears with laughter as we waited for our food.

He also told us that the restaurant is run only by him and his son, who is the chef, and that they serve a maximum of 15 plates (!!) per evening. They prefer to keep it small, focusing on quality and experience vs. volume.

We started off with the Warm Ravioli as an appetizer. While the name isn’t too, well, appetizing, we were told that it’s one of the most popular dishes. It consisted of made-from-scratch ravioli stuffed with cheese on a bed of Kerry Kerry, a local delicacy. The best I can describe Kerry Kerry is that it is shredded fish in a spicy sauce, but that doesn’t really do it justice. Basically, just eat it and ask questions later. That’s my travel eating motto!

Gasparito, Authentic Aruban Restaurant | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

For an entree, I had something called Keshi Yena , another traditional dish of cheese melted over some type of shredded chicken called Crioyo. I’m not sure exactly what was in it, but I’m telling you, it was melt-in-your-mouth good. Carly had the Gasparito Chicken which was equally tasty.

Dinner at Gasparito on Friday night was the perfect beginning to the weekend in Aruba. Dan made us feel like old friends, and he even gave us some valuable advice on things to do during the rest of our time on the island. Not to mention his son, who we never actually saw, has some serious talent going on back there in the kitchen. It was also too perfect that I only had to roll my very full self two blocks to Pauline’s, where I promptly collapsed into my bed.

Diana's Pancake Place, Dutch Pancakes, 48 Hours in Aruba

Another thing you should probably eat during your 48 hours in Aruba? Dutch pancakes. There’s a famous Dutch pancake restaurant that I was dying to go to after seeing a friend post their meal there on Instagram. But unfortunately, it was closed on Sunday morning when we wanted to go. But we didn’t despair: to the rescue came Diana’s Pancakes Place , a newer spot located underneath the historic Old Dutch Windmill.

Old Dutch Windmill, Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Diana herself took our order and served us pancakes, which are very wide but thin with ingredients like bacon and ham mixed in. I went with the apple-cinnamon, but I also tasted the apple-bacon and pineapple-ham and all three were pretty amazing. Diana’s Pancakes Place was also adorable; I loved how the interior was decorated with cows.

Moomba Beach Bar, Aruba

In terms of nightlife, Aruba is relatively chill since it’s a family/honeymoon destination. But we did find one bar that was pretty hopping called Moomba Beach Bar . While the other bars we passed by were dull and empty, Moomba was lively and crowded with tourists of all ages from the US and Latin America. We snagged a table, ordered a bucket of Balashi (the local beer) and watched as a few American women who may have been slightly over-served danced on top of the bar.  If you’re looking for a casual and fun spot in Aruba, Moomba was the way to go. Just don’t expect anything too classy!

48 Hours in Aruba | TheWeekendJetsetter.com

Spending 48 hours in Aruba surprised me in every way, and I left the island with a determination to return (preferably someday when I have more time for some actual relaxation… if that ever happens). What I had thought of as an overly touristy destination had plenty to offer once we began digging for hidden gems. As they say, don’t judge a book by its cover and don’t judge a destination by its popularity on the cruise ship route. Until next time, Aruba!

Thanks Marie! I also never thought about visiting Aruba until my cousin suggested I join her on her trip. Glad I went because it was such a blast!

Thanks Marie! I’d never considered going either – but just goes to show you that you can find cool stuff to do anywhere if you look hard enough.

Hi!! I have a question! I stumbled upon your blog while researching jeep rental. Do those UTVs act just like a jeep/car? Basically, can you drive them anywhere on the island?

Hi Donna, yes you can drive them anywhere on the island (actually you can take them more places than you can a jeep!) and fill them up at gas stations.

Thank you, thank you! Thanks to your blog, I’m going to rent one of these versus a Jeep. I’ve been researching all morning! My hubby and I are taking a trip down to Aruba in 2 weeks! I heard jeeps easily get flat tires, etc. Would you say that there is nothing to worry about on these UTVs?

Awesome! You’ll have so much fun. I would just ensure you’re renting from a UTV company with good reviews. I had no issues with Roadrunner, but if you read reviews of other ATV/UTV rental companies on TripAdvisor you will find a few horror stories about equipment breakdown, etc. If you’re really worried, you could buy a sim card for your phone at the airport so you can call the company in case of breakdown!

I have been to aruba on and off for 25 years. All seasons. It does rain. Two years ago it rained heavily for 3 days. Another time the rain was so high you got water up to your knees downtown. Yes its beautiful but it rains a lot

Hi Dahlia, bummer that it rained so much on a couple of your trips! Must have just been unlucky those couple of times – I’m sure it does rain a couple weeks out of the year. But Aruba gets 20 inches of rain annually on average, which is less than Napa / other parts of Northern California that are SUPER dry 🙂

Wow ! Great detailing of your journey. I know this kind of small trips reduce your stress and you are ready to go back to your office. Thanks for sharing the ATV rental details. I am bookmarking this post. Would love to go Aruba in few months.
