New maps reveal scale of ‘ambitious and complex’ £1bn Welsh Metro project

New maps have been unveiled which reveal the enormous scale of a £1bn Welsh Metro project.

Lee Waters, the Deputy Minister for Climate Change, who has responsibility for transport said the “Welsh Metro project will be one of the most ambitious and complex programmes we’ve ever undertaken.”

Speaking just a week before the Welsh Government publishes its Net Zero plans in the run up to COP26, the Deputy Minister said how the project would deliver on plans set out in Llwybr Newydd, the Wales Transport Strategy, by creating a modern, integrated and sustainable transport network that supports modern lifestyles.

He says that the Metro will make it the easier choice for people to use their cars less and public transport and active travel more, to significantly reduce our environmental impact and help Wales reach its Net Zero carbon target by 2050.

The new maps, made available for the first time today, illustrate the ambitious short and longer term plans that the programme will deliver.

The options include:

  • 172km of electrification to improve journey times and frequency
  • Up to 30% more services to improve connectivity across Wales, such as new tram-trains offering fast turn-up-and-go services at 45 stations on Valleys Lines by 2024
  • New and improved rail and bus services and active travel routes to reduce rural isolation, provide a door-to-door commuting experience and open up job, business and leisure opportunities across North Wales
  • New integrated tickets and more flexible fare options delivered through new technology on all buses and more than 200 new ticket machines at stations
  • New and improved train stations across Wales to provide a viable public transport alternative to the congested road network and; 100% renewable energy powering overhead wires to reduce our carbon footprint
  • As well as connecting communities the project is already delivering economic benefits across Wales – promoting careers in engineering for children and women, providing job opportunities for veterans, and creating pathways to help offenders with their rehabilitation into stable and rewarding and employment.

‘Not simply a transport project’

Deputy Minister Lee Waters said: “The Metro is not simply a transport project, it’s about changing the lives of people across Wales and is an excellent example of how investment in tackling climate change has far broader community benefits.

“Improving our public transport and active travel network routes is the right and responsible thing to do for the environment – making low carbon transport options more attractive, affordable, and easier to use – enabling people to leave their car at home particularly in the more densely populated parts of Wales linking up with active travel routes to provide door-to-door journeys in an integrated, sustainable transport network.”

He added: “Next month we will be attending COP26 – the most important COP since Paris in 2015 – and we will take a clear message to Glasgow that Wales is a globally responsible nation – ambitious projects like this prove that and show how everyone here is willing to play a part to combat global warming.”

The Welsh Government has also announced today an additional £2m cash injection to expand existing plans for South East and South West Wales metros, to include new bus and rail stations and services as well more active travel routes making public transport more attractive and accessible and connecting communities.

Match that Gwynedd…please sir can we have a main line from Caernarfon to Porthmadog…

No point in getting envious M.M that’s a map and means nothing at all unless they crack on with the substantial works needed, not words.

Ha Ha Ha…That was my first thought then I thought I saw the promised land…spent a good portion of my day marvelling at the roundabouts of the Caernarfon by-pass, so I do know miracles can happen…

Ahhh…this again…..the good old SOUTH EAST WALES METRO!! Not an inch anywhere West of Maesteg!! Needs a name change quick!!!!!!! :S

Vaughan

Another press release on this subject no doubt. All talk.

Stephen

South Wales needs more investment, I’d redirect money from North Wales to the South.

Llwynog Abertawe

All of Wales needs more investment; redirecting money from the north to the south isn’t the answer.

Meanwhile we no longer have evening services on the Pembroke Dock Line, so if you want a day out you have to drive. I laugh at the stupidity of radio adverts exhorting us to enjoy a day out by train, NOT possible from this line, unless you intend to head back mid afternoon no surprise that they cut the neglected underfunded unloved link for south Pembrokeshire, it’s almost like they want to close it. Promises of “jam tomorrow” are no consolation where we have had services cut causing many problems for working people and others who want to be out …  Read more »

Brilliant idea! I wonder if there’s such thing as North Wales?!?

Welshjack

There isn’t even a South West Wales so what chance have you got

Meic

Just prior to the pandemic the railway had just about reached capacity in the South East And it’s also very expensive and inconvenient. M4 cancelled two years ago and everyone is still just talking …

Mike the Bike

This is good if it comes to proper fruition – people later down the line cant get on trains at peak times as-is so give up and drive or are always late for work. This however is no excuse to not address the M4 2 lane bottleneck further East around Newport. Heads in the sand over that – what was adequate 20 years ago is no longer fit for purpose or business. Accept that rather than bang on about Active Travel as some false panacea- much as it works for me personally.

Not surprised to see Wales has gone just as Southern Centric as England always has been. Is the North getting a couple of extra double deckers and another ancient Tube train conversion to make it all good? Welcome to our club North Wales. Love Northern England.

Chris

Nothing for North Wales again, all in South Wales as usual, labour punishing the North because it votes conservative against them

Party politics, am I right? Welsh Government accusses Westminster of not giving us enough money nor development, then Cardiff does the same to the north. The end result? South Wales continues to vote Labour because of Westminster; the north continues to vote Conservative because of South Wales. The best solution would be to either get a Conservative Senedd or Labour seats in North Wales.

mike

meanwhile road system in Cardiff has become a joke due to ridiculous cycle lanes, roads full of potholes, traffic jams belching out fumes, city centre dead, M4 a joke as slower than an A road. well done! Vanity project.

Owen Gareth

Typical a press release before a major conference on climate Blah Blah ,talk about filling your boots with cash for the labour voteing gulable South no wonder we have a north /South divide this has been talked about for years this will take another 30 years to sort out… we need more investment in the North first makes your blood boil ….take the A470 as an example it’s a joke

Default group, south wales metro ‘a step closer’.

New train timetables on the Valley Lines and across Cardiff are being heralded as ‘one step closer to the South Wales Metro’.

From June 2 passengers from across the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff will benefit from more frequent services later into the night.

New timetables on the Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Rhymney, City and Coryton lines will provide more regular services between the South Wales valleys and the capital city.

These changes include:

  • Increase from six to eight trains per hour between Cardiff and Pontypridd, with all  calling at Treforest Estate
  • Increase from four to six trains per hour between Caerphilly and Cardiff
  • Increase from one to two trains per hour between Rhymney and Cardiff
  • More frequent evening services between Cardiff and Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr
  • A Sunday service on the Cardiff City line for the first time
  • A new service from Pontypridd through to Cardiff Bay without the need to change at Queen Street

The Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport, Ken Skates, said:

“This is an important step on the journey to deliver the South Wales Metro. “The new timetable will mean more frequent journeys for passengers – improving connectivity, connecting people and creating opportunity.”

The South Wales Metro which will eventually see four trains per hour from Treherbert, Aberdare, Rhymney and Merthyr to/from Cardiff.

Colin Lea, Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales, said:

“We’re making the change now so people can get some of those benefits early before we start introducing electric trains on these routes with an even more frequent service and faster journey times. “The key message is to check before you travel if you use our Valley Line services.”

Elsewhere on the mainline network there will be some minor changes and all customers are being asked to check their journey details from June 2 onwards to ensure they have the latest information.

Work starts to electrify train line for South Wales Metro scheme which promises faster journey times

A major rail line has been closed for over two weeks as Transport for Wales prepares for the introduction of brand new electric-tram trains.

The work is part of the Welsh Government's South Wales Metro plan to improve public transport and better connect communities in the valleys.

It will see new stations and tracks being built to improve connectivity, increase capacity and cut journey times.

The line between Aberdare and Pontypridd closed on Sunday and will remain shut until September 12 to allow engineering work for the new trains which promise more services and faster journey times.

The new trains are powered by overhead lines, reducing travel times between Aberdare and Cardiff.

This will allow the train company to increase services to four every hour.

The work is part of a wider efforts to electrify the Coryton, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhymney and Treherbert lines, also known as the Core Valleys Lines.

Senior Construction and Safety Assurance Manager, James Meredith, said: "We're upgrading the track which will allow trains to move quicker.

"We're redoubling lines and adding loop lines which will allow trains to pass meaning we can increase the frequencies of trains."

The Welsh Government hope the new metro system will encourage more people to ditch their cars and use public transport instead.

Wales has a target of reaching   Net Zero emissions by 2050  with transport currently accounting for 17% of emissions.

Deputy Minister for Climate Change, Lee Waters, said the key to responding to the climate crisis is to "make the right thing to do the easy thing to do."

He said: "At the moment using public transport is often not as easy as jumping in the car and we need to switch that around.

"This is what the metro is all about, the frequency of trains will be so common that it's just easier to use.

"That's essential to meet the scientific warnings that we're facing."

Another step closer towards delivering the South Wales Metro

From 2 June passengers from across the South Wales Valleys and Cardiff will benefit from more frequent services later into the night as delivery of the South Wales Metro moves another step closer.

New timetables on the Merthyr, Aberdare, Treherbert, Rhymney, City and Coryton lines will provide more regular services improving connectivity between the south Wales valleys and the capital city.

These changes include:

  • Increase from 6 to 8 trains per hour between Cardiff and Pontypridd, with all 8 calling at Treforrest Estate

  • More frequent evening services between Cardiff and Treherbert, Aberdare and Merthyr
  • A Sunday service on the Cardiff City line for the first time
  • A new service from Pontypridd through to Cardiff Bay without the need to change at Queen Street

These changes will signal a new way of travelling for passengers, providing them with more choice and on some routes quicker commutes to and from the city.

For example, from June customers travelling from Aberdare, Llandaf, Cathays or Queen Street will have the option to change trains at Pontypridd or Radyr to reach their destination quicker.

The Cabinet Secretary for North Wales and Transport, Ken Skates said: “This is an important step on the journey to deliver the South Wales Metro.

“The new timetable will mean more frequent journeys for passengers – improving connectivity, connecting people and creating opportunity.”

These timetable improvements are another step towards delivering the South Wales Metro which will eventually see four trains per hour from Treherbert, Aberdare, Rhymney and Merthyr to/from Cardiff.

Colin Lea, Planning and Performance Director at Transport for Wales said: “This change will deliver a host of benefits to customers across our Core Valley Routes.

“We’re making the change now so people can get some of those benefits early before we start introducing electric trains on these routes with an even more frequent service and faster journey times.

“The key message is to check before you travel if you use our valley line services.”

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT

Seaside town is the ‘laid back capital of the UK’ for everyone sick of the rat race

Beach, Boscombe, Bournemouth

London might be the land of excitement and opportunity , but one thing we can (almost all) agree on, is that it’s certainly not relaxing .

Instead, those burned out by the rat race might want to head down to Bournemouth , which has just been named the ‘laid back capital’ of the UK.

Bournemouth’s seven miles of beaches and warm microclimate seem to be a recipe for contentment, with the Dorset county scoring high on happiness and low for anxiety among residents.

And, with a push to shake off its association with kiss-me-quick British arcades and tacky seaside haunts, the town is rapidly revitalising its reputation as a UK staycation hotspot.

Why is Bournemouth so laid back?

The town received the title after coming overall top in the UK in a study commissioned by Supplement Place .

To name their winners, the researchers built a list of 50 towns and cities across the UK and drilled into ONS data on happiness, life satisfaction and anxiety.

They also looked at the number of annual Google searches for several keywords relating to the ideas of peacefulness and calm (including phrases such as ‘greenspaces’, ‘meditation’, ‘parks near me’, and ‘yoga’) before giving each one an overall ‘zen score’.

Bournemouth Beach and Pier

Bournemouth came out on top thanks to its high score for life satisfaction and happiness, while at the same time scoring in the bottom five for anxiety levels.

With several public gardens, a delightful seafront, and the unmissable historic pier, the researchers thought Bournemouth offered the perfect backdrop to unwind.

Things to do in Bournemouth

Of course, Bournemouth Pier has to be on your list, if only for a quick turn around the ferris wheel and some classic, seaside candy floss.

Those looking for a beach day have plenty of spots to choose from. The stretch simply named Bournemouth Beach offers golden sands, but walk 20 minutes along the seafront to the lesser-known Alum Chine Beach for a location with fewer crowds. Mudeford Sandbank Beach is a little further away, at a 20-minute drive from the pier, but it was named ‘paradise in the UK’ by an impressed visitor who fell in love with the serene atmosphere and quintessentially British beach huts.

If you’ve worked up a thirst, you’ll find plenty of beach bars and restaurants on the seafront, such as Urban Reef in Boscombe , which operates as a cafe by day and restaurant by night with unrivalled proximity to the water.

@serenahoscik if you are debating studying by the sea DO IT💫 will miss it sm but I’m excited for the future💕😌 #student #Lifestyle #lifestylevlog #studentlifestyle #bournemouthuni #bournemouthbeach #fyp ♬ original sound – serena hoscik

Those craving a bit of culture should head to Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum, which exists inside a stunning Grade II listed cliff-top mansion. It’s like ‘walking into another world’ where art-lovers will be utterly ‘enthralled by the gallery…filled with beautiful paintings and sculptures’, according to the glowing TripAdvisor reviews.

For something a bit different when classic British weather strikes, the Centre VR Bournemouth offers an alternative indoor activity. The virtual reality centre offers a range of experiences, from escape rooms to child-friendly games.

You can also catch one of the many bus tours to Durdle Door  – a natural limestone arch with a stunning beach on the iconic Jurassic Coast.

House prices in Bournemouth

Bosombe Victorian Parade

The average home sold in Bournemouth over the last year had a price tag of £383,793, according to data from Rightmove . The figure is above the average house price, which currently sits at £285,000, as of December 2023, according to the ONS .

However, when you compare this to London (where homes sold for an average of £704,023 in the last year) Bournemouth does represent a bargain option for retirees or remote workers sick of city prices.

Did you know Bournemouth has some of the UK's best weather?

The micro-climate on the Southern coast means Bournemouth is often one of the country’s sunniest spots.

According to the official Bournemouth.co.uk visitor guide:

  • April  can offer highs of 19 degrees during certain days with an average low of 6 degrees.
  • May  really steps things up in the weather department with some days reaching over 20 degrees and lows averaging around 9 degrees.
  • June  is when things start to become hotter, Bournemouth can see temperatures soaring above 24 degrees during certain days and experiences average lows of 11 degrees.
  • July  typically includes Bournemouth’s hottest days of the year and can exceed temperatures well above 25-degrees and lows of around 13-degrees.
  • August  can also see temperatures soaring over the 25-degree mark with average lows of around 11 degrees which is the start of those colder nights.
  • September  is the time the temperature usually starts to drop, but you can still experience the odd day reaching 23 degrees or more.

The majority of sales in Bournemouth during the last year were flats, selling for an average price of £247,458. Detached properties sold for an average of £563,019, with semi-detached properties fetching £357,938

Overall, sold prices in London over the last year were similar to the previous year and 8% up on the 2021 peak of £653,297.

How to get to Bournemouth from London

Russell-Cotes Gallery, Bournemouth

The train from London to Bournemouth is your fastest option. It usually takes 2 hours and 21 minutes, but can take just 1 hour and 44 minutes on the fastest services. Be warned though, the slow Sunday route can take up to 3 hours 5 minutes, so it really is worth planning ahead of time to find the best route for you. You have two departure choices by train: catch the South Western Railway train from London Waterloo, or the Great Western Railway service from London Paddington.

Alternatively, busses depart from Victoria Coach Station station and arriving at Bournemouth Station, departing hourly, and operate every day. The journey takes approximately 2 hours 35 minutes.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
