Without You - William Riker x Reader

Summary: An injury leaves you confined to Medbay, and William Riker must face the night alone for the first time in a long while.

Author’s Note: Titling this was hard. Usually I just use a quote, but there is no dialogue here. It is sort of a mess, but more importantly it’s just angst.

Picard was overly apologetic. The usually collected Captain appeared just as distressed as his First Officer. It hadn’t been his escape from death that shook him, but the near lose of your life and the part he played in it.

The Captain was no coward; a man dedicated to duty and by extension his crew. He would gladly give his life for his crew, but this time he had been reminded that it works both ways.

Reminded oh so very sharply as you had pulled him to safety just as the ground crumbled underneath you; leaving the Captain dazed yet safe while you lie at the bottom of a pit - injured but alive.

There is an extra weight to your life, one the Captain is aware of and actually fairly supportive of. And that is your connection to his First Officer William Riker. 

The Captain feels that weight compound in on him as he goes to explain what had occurred, stopping his First Officer from following the team to Medbay. He expects anger, for Riker did have a bit of a temper especially when it came to matters like this. 

Picard cringes as he has to snap at Riker to get his attention, too busy watching you be carried further away from him to pay attention to his Captain. Now with Riker’s full attention, Picard delivers the news he had been dreading having to recite since he heard your cry as you fell.

It is not anger that Picard is rewarded with and Picard fears he may lose more that just on solid crew member.

It wasn’t meant to go this way. Scouting a planet that once had been inhabited, Picard wanted to take the reins on this Away Mission. With the Captain practically giddy at the idea of getting to explore some ancient ruins, Riker was left behind in charge of the Enterprise. You of course, a regular to Away Missions, were slotted to go.

Riker was never overbearing when it came to the Away Mission you went on, as a Science Officer you were hardly ever slotted for particularly dangerous outings. You were also a capable individual, as he had seen himself many times. He actually rather likes your company on Away Missions, listening with interest as you would grow excited over findings despite not understanding half of what you have to say.

Riker often didn’t have to worry, but this time he did.

This wasn’t the first Away Mission you had been on that Riker himself had not led. While he was more than aware that things could go awry regardless to if he was there or not, Riker felt better about things just being there.

No one was truly at fault for this accident. Not that it wasn’t a concern, but one can not prepare for the ground to quite literally fall out underneath them.

Riker could not bring himself to blame his Captain, he trusted the man and would not let one complete accident cloud his opinion of Picard. He couldn’t blame you either, but oh how he wanted to. No, he could only blame himself and the fact he had not been there.

It had taken a while to get you here - a private room post-op in Medbay. While the fall had not been too far, it had not been a soft landing which had not been made any better by the debris that rained down from above. It was by sheer luck that you had escaped death, so easily the fall could have claimed you. Still, there were internal injuries that needed to be treated, and many bones needed mending in one way or another.

Riker is told over and over that you would be alright; the injuries tended as well as they could - now you just needed time to heal. For a second he could believe it, were he not living with the memory of your form when you had been beamed back aboard. The vision of you, of how small and broken you looked in Worf’s arms as you had been carried from the Transporter to Medbay would stay with him forever.

Will doesn’t allow himself to cry as his heart begs to; to release the emotions he is trying so hard to shove down. Why bother when the only person who could soothe him was not able? No, he would save his tears for when you were better. When he can remind you just how much you mean to him.

He couldn’t even bring himself to touch you. To hold your hand or try to brush the hair from your face. So afraid of causing further harm. Its unlike him, but that was in line for how the situation had claimed him. 

Will does long to touch you, a physical line to keep you there. To feel your hand in his, even if he knows you can not return the gesture. He could fool himself into believing you would be okay if only he could hold you. Like his tears, it would have to wait.

Deanna tries her best to comfort him; she doesn’t need to be an empath to see the agony Will is in. She knows him, knows just how fierce Will’s emotions can be as a man who feels so deeply about everything.

Although it feels like a small betrayal, one he knows you would think nothing of, Will accepts the comfort Deanna offers. He wants to believe her - she’s never lied to him before. 

Riker had to eventually give into Dr. Crusher’s and Deanna’s urging. You wouldn’t wake tonight, being kept sedated to give you time to heal. Will was doing nothing more than torturing himself, and you wouldn’t want that. He needed to go to his quarters, to take care of himself and get some sleep.

Still, it wasn’t what he wanted to do. If he could have it his way, he would have stayed by your bedside all night. It wouldn’t be the first night he had spent in Medbay, although normally the roles were reversed. Instead, Riker had relented; the walk from Medbay to his quarters felt like it took longer than usual - lonelier than it should have been.

The silence of his quarters is deafening. He’s grown so used to having you already there, waiting for him to get off shift to enjoy the few spare hours you both had. You practically lived there now; the collection of your clothes in his dresser strong evidence to that.

Will makes a silent promise to ask you to move in with him once you are better. It was a long time coming anyway, and it wasn’t like it was the first time it crossed his mind. It is with regret that Will wonders why he hadn’t already asked.

And you would get better - he had to tell himself. You had to be okay; Will wasn’t sure he could stand to lose you. He’s never expected it, to find someone who understood him like you do - someone who loves him like you do. He had it once, but in his immaturity he had let it go. Now, when he was ready, to have it snatched from him? Well, his life never had been very fair.

Riker does his best to not notice your absence while he goes about his nightly routine, but again it is the silence that nags at him. There isn’t any playful banter as he prepares for bed, no loving words as he stumbles into bed. Only the ambiance of the ship and himself - a quiet that is indeed deafening.

Sleep refuses to claim Riker. His heart is heavy, gripped by worry, fear, and longing. His mind raced with thoughts of what might be, a few are hopeful but just as painful to dwell on. 

The bed felt too large and the room too cold. The place beside him is empty and seemingly more vast than it has ever been. Nothing there for him to hold or to hold him in the coolness of night-hours. 

There wasn’t a second heart beat to lull him to sleep. Something - Someone was missing and Will felt it.

Eventually exhaustion fell over him and Will was able to sleep; grasping onto the desperate idea that this would be the last night he would have to suffer in this way. That tomorrow you would be awake and okay enough to leave Medbay and come back to him.

You first suspected when your period hadn't arrived on schedule. You had waited a couple days, just to make sure it wasn't an irregularity, and sure enough, it didn't come.

Of course, you knew you should ask Bones for a pregnancy test but you knew that the captain-- your husband-- would have to be informed if it was positive. You didn't know if you were ready to tell him yet. Jim was so good with kids but you never really talked about it. Did he even want one? Was this even the right time?

He was the father, though. Jim had the right to know.

Most of the crew in the Mess Hall were people getting ready for the night shift. You and Jim sat eating dinner. He was telling you about what happened on the Bridge that day-- something about a new ensign who could not figure out the piloting controls.

"You would think that Star Fleet wouldn't assign anybody like that to any ship. I had to call up Sulu for a double shift to replace him-- I ought to give Sulu extra replicator rations. He's going to need the coffee."

"Are you going to send the ensign back to the Academy?"

"Thinking about it," Jim groaned. "But it's only been a day. Anyway, tell me something good."

Your heart skipped a beat. You smiled and looked down. "I do have some good news-- and it's about us."

You could feel his eyes on you. Inquisitive, suspecting. "We're going to be parents, Jim. I'm pregnant."

His hands slammed down onto the table, making the plates rattle. You looked up, expecting the worst but instead, you saw that he was excited-- his face was lit up and his eyes were glittering.

He gasped. "Are you sure? Completely sure?"

You laughed. "Yes! I need to check in with Bones but I'm sure."

Jim stood up and punched the air, drawing even more attention to your table. You hid your smile behind one of your hands. Your husband knelt next to you and looked sincerely up at you.

"I am so happy, Y/n. You cannot comprehend how happy I am because of this-- or how much I love you right now."

On top of missing your monthly cycle, you were beginning to experience aches and pains in your breasts and a tightness in your abdominal area. You went to Bones with suspicions-- to which he only confirmed with a couple tests.

So, you were pregnant.

You were excited to tell Spock, to say the least. Now was a better time than ever to have a kid since the five-year mission was officially over. Star Fleet even recommended that some officers take time off before the next one. It was perfect.

You had Bones send you an ultrasound. There wasn't much to see but thanks to advanced technology, you could tell that something definitely was there. You set the photo up at the table and waited for Spock to come home from the errands he was running.

The door opened and closed and you smiled. Spock shortly joined you with a couple bags in hand.

"I have brought the ingredients for dinner. I will be making--" He paused, noticing the picture on the table. He frowned and moved closer for a better look. He set the bags down next to it and picked up the frame gently in his hands. "Is this--?"

"Yes," you said joyfully. "Due in eight months-- I'm already a few weeks along."

Spock stayed frozen, staring at the image of your child. "Spock, are you okay?"
