A sumptuous culinary experience amidst opulent surroundings, where guests can relax in plush, spacious armchair seating arranged around splendidly dressed tables of two and four. Attentive service adds an ambiance of old-world charm and sophistication, transporting you to a world of nostalgia and comfort.

Guests will be welcomed on board with a glass of Champagne, followed by a three course evening meal concluding with freshly brewed coffee. We cater for special dietary requirements such as Vegetarian, Vegan, Gluten Free and Pescatarian, please confirm this with our reservations team at least seven days prior to travel.

First Class

Your journey begins in elegantly restored carriages with comfortable and spacious seating around tables of two and four, where you will be welcomed on board with sparkling wine and freshly brewed coffee and tea.

Sink into your seat as scenic vistas unfold, or venture through to the restored Hippocrene Bar (named after the fountain of Mount Helicon in Greek Mythology), available exclusively to First Class guests. Here you can purchase additional drinks from our specially chosen drinks list including cocktails, wine, beer, spirits, and cold drinks, or soak up the convivial atmosphere and mingle with fellow guests.

Premium Standard

Premium Standard offers a nostalgic and authentic journey onboard a beautifully restored carriage that embodies the charm of a bygone era, with its classic decor and comfortable seating around tables for four.

Passengers can enjoy the sights and sounds of steam travel and the camaraderie of fellow travelers, whilst enjoying complimentary tea and coffee. Passengers are invited to treat themselves at our Buffet Car where they will find a selection of hot and cold snacks and a selection of wine, beer, spirits, and cold drinks available for purchase.

Scheduled locomotive

70000 Britannia is a British Railways Standard class 7 engine, alternatively known as the Britannia class, and the first of 55 to be built by British Railways in Crewe.

Completed in January 1951 she was built for express passenger services between London and Norwich.

The BR Standard classes were designed by drawing on the best qualities from several previous locomotives to create an efficient engine that was produced with lower maintenance costs and weight saving measures to enable it to work across a wider geography.

Britannia has 2 cylinders, 6 driving wheels and a firebox of 42ft2 with most of the motion situated on the outside of the frames for ease of maintenance. Whilst limited to 75mph the locomotive is capable of reaching speeds up to 100mph.

For many years Britannia’s cab roof was painted white to commemorate her pulling the funeral train of King George VI from Sandringham to London in 1952. After 15 years of service in May 1966 Britannia was retired and after spells at preserved railways returned to the national network between 1991 and 1997 until major repairs were required and the locomotive was withdrawn for overhaul. In 2010 Britannia was steamed once more and 2011 marked the locomotive’s return to the main line after a 14 year absence. In one of her most important roles, Britannia hauled The Royal Train from Preston to Wakefield in January 2012.

Princess Elizabeth

Affectionately known as "Lizzie" this locomotive was built in 1933 and named after a then young Princess later to become Queen Elizabeth 11. It is one of the two remaining preserved Princess Royal Class Locos. "Lizzie" played a key role on the Diamond Jubilee celebrations - her whistle signalled the start of the Thames Jubilee Pageant and hauled the Royal Train during the Diamond Jubilee Tour.

Built in 1947 at Brighton for the old Southern Railway, Tangmere was a Battle of Britain Class locomotive that regularly hauled celebrated express trains like The Golden Arrow and The Bournemouth Belle from London to the South Coast.

With six 6ft 2ins driving wheels and weighing 86 tons, Tangmere – named after an RAF world war two airfield near Chichester in West Sussex – notched up more than half a million miles before being withdrawn from scheduled service. Now fully restored in all its glory, a sight to behold!

A copy of the LNER’s old Peppercorn A1 Pacific class locomotives but with extra water capacity and the latest safety electronics, Tornado became the first steam engine built in Britain since 1961 when it left the Darlington Works in 2008 at a cost of £3million.

Given the number 60163, the loco was named Tornado in honour of top gun RAF pilots who flew Tornado jets during the first Gulf War in 1990/91 and proudly displays the crests of former RAF bases at Leeming and Marham next to its nameplates.

Flying Scotsman

To mark the 100th anniversary of Flying Scotsman - the most famous steam locomotive of all time - we’re heading to Edinburgh for a journey of a lifetime on board the Northern Belle.

Flying Scotsman was built in Doncaster, the first locomotive of the newly formed London and North Eastern Railway (LNER). By 1924, when it was selected to appear at the British Empire Exhibition in London, the loco had been renumbered 4472—and given the name 'Flying Scotsman' after the daily 10.00 London to Edinburgh rail service which started in 1862.

For this extraordinary journey, British Pullman will be hauled by Belmond’s resident steam locomotive no. 35028, Clan Line, itself a veteran of the Golden Arrow. Based at Dover and London in the 1950s, the mighty locomotive was frequently allocated to the prestigious train. Your adventure begins at London Victoria Station as you board British Pullman’s immaculate umber and cream carriages. With evocative clouds of steam heralding your progress, head out along the historic boat-train route through Ashford. Your personal steward will serve a delicious sparkling Bellini followed by an elegant brunch. Take time to soak up the exquisite details of your authentic art deco carriage, as well as the passing views through your picture window. Enjoy a short stopover in Canterbury with a guided walking tour of the cobbled, medieval city, famous for its cathedral. Alternatively, feel free to explore at leisure before making your own way back to Canterbury West Station. Back on board, continue to Dover to link up with the traditional route of the Golden Arrow for your return to London. As you linger over a delectable Golden Arrow-inspired three-course dinner, contemplate the intrepid travellers of yesteryear who understood that the journey was every bit as important as the destination. Golden Arrow

The Golden Arrow was a luxurious boat-train service that carried passengers between London and Paris from 1929 to 1972. Considered one of the world’s most glamorous, romantic trains, it was originally a 10-car Pullman service, just like the present-day British Pullman.

Indeed, five of the original vehicles – Cygnus, Ibis, Minerva, Perseus and Phoenix – now beautifully restored, form part of the British Pullman rake.

Our featured loco is the LNER designed (but 21st century built) A1 Pacific No. 60163 Tornado ^, which attracts attention wherever it goes. With it in charge we anticipate a fast run across the Somerset Levels to Taunton before the climb over Whiteball summit into Devon. Red clays are a feature of the Culm and Exe Valleys before Exeter, after which the line hugs the Exe Estuary before emerging on to the famous Dawlish sea wall. Inland again to Newton Abbot, then through Torquay to Paignton before climbing and then descending to Kingswear.

Option A:  Paignton (1225-1715) to enjoy this classic seaside resort.

Option B:  Kingswear (1300-1640) take the ferry (included in the price) to Dartmouth (a haunt of pirates centuries ago), perhaps for a river cruise, a walk to the castle or exploring this harbour town with its choice of eateries and shops.

‘Table for Two’ seats are available at a supplement of £35 per person in First Class, First Class Plus and Premier Dining.

THE CAMBRIAN COAST EXPRESS – THURSDAY 16 MAY 2024

For lovers of stunning scenery, the single track railway that climbs through the mountains of, mid-wales, then hugs the cambrian coast by way of tywyn, barmouth, and porthmadog to pwllheli is hard to beat. .

This rail excursion offers a wide variety of joining points, whilst travelling in comfort on a through train to one of the most spectacular railway lines in Britain.  

From Shrewsbury the train will set-off for Mid-Wales, over easy ground and along the valley of the River Severn, which is close by through Welshpool to Newtown, soon after which we enter the valley of the Afon Garno, followed almost to the summit and deep rock cutting at Talerddig.

Helter-skelter downhill then to Machynlleth and to Dovey Junction, where we take the north side of the Dyfi Estuary, running on a seawall towards Aberdyfi, then turn north to Tywyn, onto the cliffs at Friog and down to cross the Morfa Mawddach estuary on the half mile viaduct to Barmouth/Abermaw.  

On then past the great fortress at Harlech to Minffordd and across the Glaslyn Estuary, with views (weather permitting to Y Wyddfa/Snowdon) before Porthmadog.   A final run, much of it close to the shoreline, leads past Criccieth to the end of the line at Pwllheli.

WE OFFER THE FOLLOWING DESTINATIONS FOR YOU TO CHOOSE FROM:

Option A – BARMOUTH (1300/1750) :

A compact resort and start of a circular trip, featuring a river ferry and a walk over the historic half mile long Barmouth Bridge and the Fiarbourne Railway.

Option B – MINFFORDD & PORTMEIRION (1350/1700) :

Why not walk a mile along the driveway (each way) and visit the Italianate village of Portmeirion , made famous by the Prisoner TV series of the 1960s (Pay admission charge on the day).

Option C – PORTHMADOG (1400/1645) :

A very pleasant port and town , home to several narrow gauge railways .

Option D – PWLLHELI (1435/1620) :

Market town of the Llŷn Peninsula with an extensive marina. Journeys end of course!
