What to Bring

License*: If you are a Wisconsin resident and have a Wisconsin resident fishing license, you must add a Great Lakes Salmon and Trout Stamp if you don't already have one (cost is $10.00). If you don’t have a Wisconsin fishing license or are a non-resident, you must obtain a license which includes Great Lakes Salmon and Trout Stamp. This can be done online. DNR REQURIES YOU CARRY A PAPER COPY OF YOUR FISHING LICENSE ON LAKE SUPERIOR. We would happily do this step for you if we could, but the DNR requires your personal information for licenses. This is applicable to fishing charters only.

*This is for charters out of Bayfield, WI only.

Dress: We recommend dressing in layers with sensible shoes (they may get wet on certain tours). A hat with brim, sunglasses, and sunscreen are recommended.

Gear: Provided are a couple pairs of binoculars for sightseeing, but you may bring your own if you prefer. We can not operate within 1/4 mile of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. We will be applying to do so during their next permitting period in October, 2023.

Processing your catch: If you plan to keep your catch, please remember to bring a cooler with ice to bring your fish home. Your cooler will remain at the marina. We will keep your fish on ice for you while you're aboard.

Payment and Refunds

A deposit of 25% of the total is required at booking. We accept PayPal and can process debit and credit cards. Remainder of payment is due day of charter, non-cash payments require 3% processing fee.

Refunds of the deposit will be provided if the tour is cancelled at the Captain's discretion. Due to the nature of the rapidly changing weather on Lake Superior, it is sometimes not known until the day of departure what the temperament of the Gitche Gumee will be. We appreciate your flexibility as we attempt to accommodate your adventure while maintaining safety as our top priority.

Preventing Sea-sickness

If you have never been aboard a vessel on Lake Superior or have a history of sea-sickness or motion-sickness - we recommend that you consider discussing with your doctor if it is appropriate to take an over-the-counter anti-sea-sickness medicine at least 1 hour prior to boarding. Nothing ruins a beautiful day on the water like nausea and vomiting. Typically, once sea-sickness strikes, it does not go away (even with medicine) until well after you are ashore. Please check with your medical provider before taking any new medications.

Physical Expectations

We are sensitive to those with physical accommodation needs. Captain Savanna is a registered nurse, and while she cannot provide medical services or advice, we will try our best to accommodate all guests. Please be aware that in order to board our vessels, one must be able to lift their leg up and over the gunnel (about 12 inches). Some of our tours require a higher level of physical ability. Persons with mobility, hearing, speech, vision, or other accessibility needs are requested to contact us to discuss how we can safely and comfortably accommodate you.

Further Information

Our guests have questions, and we like to have answers. Our tours visit historic areas full of wildlife and geologic wonder. We operate just outside (not within 1/4 mile from) the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore are happy to explain all we know or keep the tour quiet for a more tranquil experience. We encourage you to ask questions and offer your feedback so we can meet your specific expectations and be ever-improving.

The location or port from which we will be departing may change. Prices subject to change without notice.

Our family of four enjoyed our sail outing tremendously. The skipper is kind and helpful, the lake and islands are beautiful, and sailing is too fun. Half of us helped crew the boat, and half of us just sat back and took it all in. Highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I reserve a private tour? Yes! Private tours are available for up to six guests. Enjoy a romantic escape, plan the perfect anniversary, or create a one-of-a-kind family adventure. For larger groups, check out our group sailing charters. Choose your destination, and go!
  • What about bad weather? Lake Superior is known for beautiful weather. Still, there may be the rare case where the weather takes a turn on the day of your charter. If it were up to us, every sailing day would be amazing. On days when it isn’t, we do our best to wait out the weather to see if it clears. Our boats will sail in light rain and other “safe weather”. Ultimately, all departures are at the sole discretion of the Captain. In cases where poor weather risks safety and we absolutely must cancel a scheduled charter, voyages will be rescheduled.
  • What should I wear? On Lake Superior, the wind can add a chill to the air. Be sure to check the weather forecast on the day of your sail, and consider bringing a light jacket just in case. Storage for personal gear is available in the cabin. Light-colored clothing with long sleeves can help reduce the effects of the sun. Guests may wish to bring sunscreen along for their trip. Correct footwear is important while sailing. Decks can become wet with sea spray; we recommend comfortable, fast-drying shoes with good traction. White or light-colored soles are preferable, as dark soles can leave marks on the yacht.
  • Will I get seasick? Seasickness is a reaction to unfamiliar motion while aboard a vessel. While most of our guests do not experience seasickness, a small percentage of people may be prone to seasickness. In our experience, this often includes people susceptible to other forms of motion sickness. If you do get seasick, it’s OK! Alert a crew member and we can help you overcome it. To help reduce your chances of becoming seasick: Stay above deck and breathe fresh air Look to the horizon, instead of into a phone or book Avoid the restroom and cabin area Get plenty of shade and avoid direct sunlight Sail on a full stomach, and avoid foods that may upset you

Success! Message received.

7 Adventures in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

Thinking about a trip to the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin? With a striking Lake Superior coast made up of sea caves and rocky cliffs, this area on the northern tip of Wisconsin is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream.

Apostle Islands Wisconsin sea caves

There are endless outdoor activities to engage in, but before we dig into 7 scenic and exciting Apostle Islands adventures, here are some important details about this dramatic destination.

Where are the Apostle Islands located in Wisconsin?

The Apostle Islands sit at the northern-most part of Wisconsin in Lake Superior just off the Bayfield Peninsula. The closest city is Bayfield which is a 6-hour drive from Milwaukee and less than four hours from St. Paul, Minnesota.

How many Apostle Islands are there?

There are 22 Apostle Islands, but only 21 of them make up the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Madeline Island is the largest of the Apostle Islands and the only one that is inhabited. It is not, however, part of the National Lakeshore. This is because there are private homes on the island – too many for the government to buy out when the other islands became a National Lakeshore in 1970.

In addition to the 21 islands, the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore includes 12 miles of mainland.

How to get to the Apostle Islands?

From Bayfield on the mainland, there are a variety of different ways to access the Apostle Islands. A car ferry transports people and cars over to Madeline Island. Private vessels, tour boats and charters cruise to the other islands as well as kayakers who paddle their way there.

So, what are the best ways to experience this picturesque spot on the map? Start with these 7 thrilling adventures.

Adventures not to miss in the Apostle Islands, Wisconsin

kayaking the Apostle Islands

1. Kayak to the mainland sea caves.

You may have heard rave reviews about kayaking to the sea caves. That’s because it’s the best way to explore in and around the sandstone formations lining the Lake Superior shore. If you only do one thing on your trip to the Apostle Islands, it should be this!

The mainland sea caves are accessible from Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia – about a 25-minute drive from Bayfield. We recommend kayaking with a tour group. (We had a great time with Lost Creek Adventures !) They provide you with the correct type of sea kayak to manage the Lake Superior waters and the expertise to know what to do if a storm suddenly appears in the distance. Plus, their guides know the most insanely beautiful spots to lead you to.

kayaking to sea cave crevice

You’ll want to take pictures along the way, so bring a waterproof case for your camera or phone. (Some kayak tour companies sell these onsite.) You may get a little wet during your tour. There is a waterproof apron they give you that drapes over the opening of the kayak to prevent cold drips from landing on your lap. That was very helpful. If the weather and water temperature call for it, your outfitter may provide a wet suit for you to wear.

We booked a half-day tour which included an hour of instruction, outfitting, and transporting, and 3 hours of actual paddling on the water. Our family of five agreed this was the perfect length of time for a tour.

traversing through sea cave

Kayaking to the sea caves is popular, so book your tour in advance. One thing to keep in mind before booking, however, is to leave time in your itinerary to hike above the sea caves first . The day before you kayak is a good option. Here’s why…

2. Hike above the mainland sea caves.

viewing Apostle Island sea caves from above

The Lakeshore Trail starts at Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia. (Note: This is also where many kayaking tours begin.) The trailhead is next to the parking lot where there is a $5 fee to park. There are also bathrooms at the start.

The tree-lined trail is a 4.6-mile out and back hike that leads you high above the shore to what’s known as “the Bowl.” This is an area that opens up to an expansive view of the rocky Lakeshore coast and sea caves below. The trail continues miles past this area to a campsite, but many people turn around at the Bowl.

(For more stunning Wisconsin sea caves, check out this article !)

3. Enjoy the area’s local craft beverages.

After a day of hiking, kayaking, or other outdoor adventure, it’s relaxing to sit back and sip one of Bayfield’s locally made beverages. Whether you favor beer, wine, or a cocktail, you’re in luck. Bayfield is home to a brewery, it’s own distillery and multiple wineries. During our stay we took advantage of all three. Here’s a look:

brewery and taproom

  • Adventure Club Brewing is Wisconsin’s northernmost brewery located just south of town on Hwy J in the Howl Adventure Center. From the taproom a large garage door opens to an outdoor patio with shaded seating. They have a disc golf course and are kid and dog friendly too.

sipping slush at distillery

  • Copper Crow Distillery is located minutes north of Bayfield in Red Cliff. They have a tasting room and an outdoor patio. I enjoyed my Copper Crow vodka slush up the hill by the firepit watching people play cornhole. The place has a definite fun and friendly atmosphere.

flight of wine

  • There are multiple wineries in Bayfield. We visited the Wineries on Betzold Road . Driving up to the back of a farmhouse situated among vineyards, we enjoyed tasting a flight of award-winning wines right next to the growing grapes in the peaceful outdoors. The winery offers delicious hard cider, too.

4. Hike to Lost Creek Falls.

lost creek falls

The day we were there the sun was shining through the trees highlighting the bright green leaves and coppery pool of water exuding a magical feel. Be sure to venture behind the waterfall for some extra fun.

posing behind waterfall

5. Cruise around the Apostle Islands.

Taking a cruise around the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin is a popular thing to do in the summer. If you plan to take a cruise, book it in advance because they do sell out. We booked a 2.5 hour Grand Tour evening ride with Apostle Islands Cruises . They depart from the Bayfield pier and allow you to bring snacks and a small cooler of drinks with you.

Apostle Islands cruise boat

6. Cliff jump into Lake Superior in Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island.

One unique adventure to embark on during your visit to the Apostle Islands is cliff jumping into Lake Superior. The water is cold but the experience is worth it (or so I’m told!) My entire family – husband, 17-year-old son, 15-year-old son, and 12-year-old daughter had a blast jumping from the roughly 20 feet high cliff into the turquoise water below. (If you’ve read my other posts, you know I don’t do cliffs. Or cold water. So I took part as full-time videographer.) The brave souls who make the leap are rewarded with an adrenaline-filled experience among the most scenic surroundings.

jumping off cliff into water

Some people say if you’re not going to venture all the way to Big Bay State Park not to bother bringing your car on the ferry. But I say, if you don’t plan to go to Big Bay State Park, then a trip to Madeline Island isn’t necessary at all. There’s not much to do on the island besides exploring the state park.

7. Catch the sunrise and sunset over water.

Wisconsin sunrise at the marina

With many accommodations located right on the water, you may be able to walk right outside your place and see the sunrise. But don’t be so sure. We stayed one block off the water, so our first morning we got up early and walked to the shore to view the sunrise. However, we didn’t realize parts of the shoreline are forested and jut out blocking our view.

sunrise in Apostle Islands Wisconsin

To see a magical sunset, head over to the west side of the peninsula. Meyer’s Beach in Cornucopia is a good option. Prepare to be wowed by fiery orange, yellow and pink hues as the sun goes down over Lake Superior.

An Apostle Islands Wisconsin getaway is filled with adventure set among spectacular Lake Superior scenery. If you’ve been there, do you have something to add to this list? Comment below. We’d love to hear from you.

You’re right. We didn’t get a chance to do that on our trip, so I didn’t think to mention it. But the pictures I’ve seen of a Cornucopia sunset are beautiful. I’ll edit that into my post above. Thanks for the catch!

The closest city, Bayfield, is in Bayfield County, not Ashland County. And some of the Islands are in Bayfield County as well. Not sure how Ashland County was able to make claim of lands off coast of Bayfield County, but Ashland is to the SSE of this Island chain.

Best Luau in California!

It is the best Luau I have attended in California. It made me feel as if I were actually in Hawaii. The dancers were highly skilled, professional, and beautiful, their whole program was outstanding. The food was abundant. They had a good variety of salads, entrees, and desserts. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole luau, the cost is well worth an evening of good food and great entertainment. I would love to return again next year.

Highly Recommend Private Luau Experience

I coordinated with the Catamaran to host a private luau and buffet for my company. We got a lot of positive feedback about the event from our guests at the end of the night - many of them were hoping we could do it again next year! I would highly recommend the Catamaran's sunset luau for large, private gatherings.

Audience Participation at the Luau!

The musicians were great, and the dancers' costumes were fantastic. The fire dancer was amazing. A very enjoyable evening of food and entertainment. One complimentary Mai Tai and Lei upon entry. The luau experience was worth it. Other folks at our table were returning because they really enjoyed their experience last year. The luau also has audience participation, which is great for young and old.

This property is beautiful

My granddaughter and I enjoyed the waterfall, fish, ducks, and parrots. The pool and hot tub were nice and open at night when we wanted to relax. We did the VIP luau and really enjoyed it. The food was amazing, the real flower leis were gorgeous, and the show was entertaining. We were also treated to a Mai Tai drink in a souvenir cup and a non-alcohol drink in a pineapple cup for my granddaughter. We made some special memories together.

Travel | Island travel: Explore an uninhabited California island for one day or 10

The lighthouse atop Anacapa Island is one of the few permanent structures on any of the islands in Channel Islands National Park. (Courtesy Dan Harding)

The five islands of Channel Island National Park are accessible only by boat, with ferries from Ventura Harbor Village available to transport the 100,000 or so guests who visit each year. No hotels — this isn’t Catalina, after all — but each island has campsites where you can pitch your pop-up tent or sleep under the stars. If you’re willing to truly unplug and spend an overnight away from it all, you’ll experience a quiet solitude unlike any other.

Start your adventure at the Channel Islands National Park Visitors Center in Ventura Harbor Village, where Island Packers offers island access cruises of one to three hours, depending on which island you choose. Santa Cruz and Anacapa are the closest — at 20 miles offshore and 12 to 14 miles, respectively — and therefore the most widely explored.

On a clear day, the Channel Islands can be glimpsed from Ventura Harbor Village, your starting-off point for ferry service to Santa Cruz, Anacapa and the other uninhabited islands. (Ventura Harbor Village)

If you aren’t prepped for an overnight — you’re essentially stranded by your captain until the morning liner cruises in — a day trip can be a great way to see the wilds on foot or by kayak. The 62,000-acre Santa Cruz Island offers 15 trail options, with more on its craggy neighbors. You’ll find trails of all sorts, from quick and easy to long and challenging, on National Park Service maps.

Some of those trails extend a daunting 18 miles, but we recommend something a bit more moderate, especially if your time is limited. Santa Cruz’s Potato Harbor Overlook hike — named for the potatolike appearance of the cove — offers spectacular ocean views and coastal vistas. Start at Scorpion Beach for a five-mile trek or Cavern Point for a two-mile loop with options to keep trekking. (Tip: Do the hike clockwise to avoid a steep climb.)

Hiking tiny Anacapa instead? Head for the lighthouse, one of the few permanent structures on any of the islands, for an easy, half-mile climb.

If sea caves pique your interest, hop in a kayak. You can take a guided kayak tour, bring your own watercraft or rent one from the Channel Islands Kayak Center, next door to the visitors center. (Tip: Make sure you book that kayak ahead of time and reserve kayak space aboard the ferry, too.)

Just make sure you’re back from any day tripping before the final ship leaves the dock, or you may find yourself camping out without any of the comforts of REI.

While island exploration is likely the crux of your visit, the journey itself is a bit of an adventure. If you tend to get seasick, grab a seat on the upper deck, which provides not only a steady stream of fresh air but the best views. You may spot pods of dolphins swimming past or — with a bit of luck and calendar serendipity — migrating humpback and giant blue whales during the summer months or gray whales between December and April. (Island Packers offers whale and wildlife cruises, too, that don’t include island landings but increase the odds of humpback sightings near the western end of the channel.)

Back on the mainland, Ventura Harbor Village invites exploration, too. The waterfront shopping complex is home to restaurants, shops, a comedy club and three escape rooms. If you prefer to take your kayak or SUP out into the protected harbor rather than an island cove, you can rent that watercraft here, too.

After your day at sea, grab dinner or mezes at the Greek Mediterranean Steak & Seafood restaurant at Ventura Harbor Village. (Courtesy Ventura Harbor Village)

Enjoy sunset from the Greek Mediterranean Steak & Seafood restaurant, which is known for its mezes, flaming cheese — served tableside, of course — and seafood entrees and pastas, as well as live entertainment by Greek folk musicians and belly dancers.

No trip is complete without dessert, and the fish cones at Coastal Cone Ice Cream are certainly Insta-worthy. Choose from 40 flavors of ice cream, including pina-vanilla, matcha, ube and caramel pretzel, served in a fish-shaped taiyaki waffle cone.

Staying the night? There’s a Four Points Sheraton and Holiday Inn Express nearby. Or you can lean into the aquatic theme and book a “boatel,” a 39-foot classic yacht, complete with queen-size stateroom, salon and galley, right at the harbor.

Channel Islands National Park: Find details on the park, trail maps and virtual tours at www.nps.gov/chis/.

Note that landing conditions vary dramatically from island to island. Some docks have stairs, and others require climbing a ladder — and there’s a surf landing on the beach at San Miguel. There are no services on the islands, and potable water is available in just two locations — Scorpion Canyon campground on Santa Cruz Island and the Water Canyon campground on Santa Rosa Island. So bring plenty of water, as well as snacks and sunscreen.
