Amazingness in four official languages

Isolated by mountains like a pinnacled island in the sea of Europe, polyglot Switzerland is a natural home for the United Nations. Synonymous with mountains, Switzerland is the quintessential alpine destination, and Matterhorn and Zermatt are household names the world over. With ancient towns on turquoise lakes, glaciers, and waterfalls throughout the country, the legendary scenery doesn't disappoint. Nor do the Swiss. Just sit back and enjoy the view; there can be few people who revel in their geography more, and roaming the endless hiking trails, schussing down off-piste ski slopes or soaking in outdoor spas you are as likely to run into locals as you are fellow travellers. Not to mention that due to their much-ballyhooed penchant for precision, stuff just... works (if you can afford it).

Solo Travel in Switzerland

Gruyeres in bloom

switzerland tour g adventures

Is Switzerland safe to travel alone? If you're wondering “is Switzerland safe for solo female travellers?” Switzerland is so ridiculously safe; that's why I've given it 5 out of 5 stars. Crime in Switzerland is virtually non-existent and the only problem you’ll run into here is avoiding a random cow upon a morning stroll.

The mountains are well-marked and include the time it will take to walk to the next destination so there is no chance of getting lost. The locals speak English and will help if you do happen to take a wrong turn. Switzerland is popular with Asian countries so you'll find many tourists here who come to experience the Alps.

The transport system is fantastic, and you can hike in the most remote areas with no problems at all.  In fact, if you are in need of some solitude, Switzerland is perfect for those wanting some alone time. The country of Switzerland is wonderful to explore independently but you may prefer to visit on a group tour.

Geneva is a great destination to visit

I love Switzerland with its alpine peaks, waterfalls and mountain vistas and some of the best panoramic train travel in the world. If you're wondering is Switzerland expensive? It is one of the more expensive countries in Europe and can be a bit pricey but don't let the cost put you off. You can still find reasonable accommodations and get by on a modest budget.

For such a small country there are four main languages with only 10,000 people speaking the traditional Swiss language. With more than half of the country in the alpine region, Switzerland is ideal for hiking with its stunning scenery.

Take your Switzerland vacation in the summer for the walking trails; there are 60,000 km to choose from. Visit in the winter for skiing and relaxing in thermal spas on the slopes. Below are my favourite Switzerland places to visit.

* Before you travel, check what paperwork or visas are required for Switzerland

Bern, the capital city

With many flights into Zurich, you may not get a chance to visit the country’s de facto capital – Bern (not Zurich as you may have thought). This historic city has so many museums.

Take your pick from the Art Museum, History Museum, and many more or take a peek inside Albert Einstein’s old residence at Einstein House. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and here you’ll find locals and tourists enjoying the bars and cafes.

If you're wondering ‘Is Switzerland safe at night?' Yes, it is and you can feel comfortable in the bars by yourself. In Bern, you could spend an evening (from Tuesday to Sunday) at Marians Jazzroom, which is perfect for solos.

If Bern Switzerland is on your itinerary, make sure you go to the Rose Garden where you can get the best view of the city from the cathedral's tower. * Read: Solo Travel in Bern

Solo Travel in Switzerland - Zurich

Zurich on a rainy day

Shopping at Zurich

Zürich is one of the Switzerland major cities. If you do spend time in Zurich , this city is ideal for a shopping spree with plenty of coffee shops for a welcome break in-between window shopping.  Head to Bahnhofstrasse for the famous shopping mile.

Known as a banking and finance hub, the city also offers river cruises which are a different way to see the city. You can even jump onboard an old steamship.

One of the things to do in Zurich is to explore the city by bike. Bikes are free and give you the freedom to cycle around the lake or the city for sightseeing and exercise rolled into one, or join the free walking tour to meet others. If you love chocolate, make sure to visit the Lindt Home of Chocolate Museum to learn the process from bean to bar and see the chocolate fountain (it's 9 metres high!)

Or if you're a football fan like me, you can visit the FIFA Museum to experience an interactive journey through football history and see the original World Cup Trophy.

Visit in the summer you'll find locals hanging out by the lake so take your towel and bikini to join them. If you prefer solitude, head to the east side of the lake to lose yourself in a picturesque garden of roses.

Zurich is the ideal destination from where to explore Rhine Falls, Europe's most powerful waterfall and one of the tourist attractions in Switzerland. It takes up to an hour train ride to reach either Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall or Neuhausen Rheinfall, the nearby train stations. * Read: Solo Travel Zurich

Oeschinen Lake

Switzerlands’ Lakes

Zurich is just one of best Switzerland cities with a lake. Another city is Lake Geneva which has the largest lake in western Europe. This Lavaux Switzerland landscape is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is said to produce the finest wine in the region; perfect for wine tasting.

Things to do in Geneva are lots of hiking. H ead west for a plethora of hiking trails within the Jura Mountains. The whole region is great for historic castles, and lake shores and offers spectacular views over the French Alps.

Solo travel in Switzerland

Then there’s Lake Lucerne ; an alpine playground with a beautiful city, lake and mountains (our favourite place in Switzerland). It is a city of culture with museums, theatres and festivals, and you can easily spend a couple of days here meandering around the churches, small streets, and plazas (not to mention the lake and the bridges).

Things to do in Lucerne is to see the famous clock (known as Zytturm), which chimes before all the other city clocks. You can read about the history of the watchmaker inside the clock museum. Or take a catamaran cruise on the lake to see this city from the water instead.

You also can't miss ‘The Dying Lion of Lucerne’ – one of the world’s most famous monuments which is situated near the oldest gift shop in town (according to the sign). Lucerne is also a great place to base yourself.

Everything Swiss is here from the best of Switzerland's chocolate to watches, and Swiss army knives but you have to try the Swiss fondue too – part of Switzerland's culture. Pick up a museum pass if you are intending to see a few museums during your stay to save you some money. * Read: Solo Travel in Lucerne

Mount Pilatus

Another must see in Switzerland is just nearby. Mount Pilatus is where you can take the Panorama Gondola up Mount Pilatus before riding the world's steepest cogwheel train en route to Alpnachstad.

It's one of the top things to do and if you have plenty of free time, y ou can also reach Mount Titlis from here and take in the 360-degree views of the Swiss Alps. Take the Lucerne-Engelberg Express and then a bus to the Titlis Xpress cable cars. Or join a Mount Titlis Day Tour and see an ice grotto too!

Go adventurous in Interlaken

Things To Do in Interlaken

If you're an adrenalin GatG head to Interlaken for every type of adventure you can imagine. From paragliding , rafting, tandem sky diving, bungy jumping, hand gliding, canyon jumping, whitewater rafting and ice climbing.

If this all sounds a bit exhausting then take a leisurely horse ride or stroll along the several walking trails instead. You can even view this resort town from above with a heli-sightseeing tour. This fun destination is the ideal town to base yourself for mountains, lakes, waterfalls and glaciers.

Interlaken is located in the Bernese Oberland and sits between lakes; Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Lake Brienz is a gorgeous turquoise-coloured lake where you can take a boat trip to see the roaring Giessbach Falls and see the oldest funicular railway.

Visit Thun Castle, a 12th-century castle which is now a museum and see the Romanesque churches dotted around the lake.

The stunning Schilthorn

Jungfrajoch Train

For the best views in Europe, take the Jungfrau Railway to the highest-altitude railway station in Europe (3454 metres). The Jungfraujoch is UNESCO listed and has Europe's largest glacier, making it a popular destination for Switzerland tourism.

Where else can you visit the ‘Top of Europe?' Travel here and you'll be transported to a world of snow and ice with breathtaking views. It's one of Switzerland's most beautiful places.

Venture inside the Ice Palace to really experience the beauty of this area in the heart of the glacier. (It's open year-round). You can reach Jungfrajoch from Lucerne or Zurich on a full-day trip. You travel via Interlaken to Grindelwald, and onward to Kleine Scheidegg past majestic peaks. * Check prices and dates: Lucerne Full-Day Trip to Jungfraujoch

Solo Travel in Switzerland - Lauterbrunnen

Lauterbrunnen and one of its 72 waterfalls

Lauterbrunnen Valley

Lauterbrunnen is a gorgeous place with mountain peaks and cliffs and waterfalls everywhere (there are 72!) Staubbach Falls is a free-falling waterfall which is visible in the Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Our favourite is Trummelbach Falls nestled in a canyon with a corkscrew waterfall – just one of the valley’s waterfalls.   You can only see this waterfall in the summer but  Lauterbrunnen can be visited at any time.

Travel here in the winter for hiking trails, shoe-skiing, cross-country skiing, and all other winter sports. With Lauterbrunnen being the starting point for most of the spectacular mountain railways, you can take a train trip to the Christmas markets during the festive season.

Church of San Lorenzo in Lugano.

Located in the canton of Ticino, Lugano is the closest Swiss city to Italy and is influenced by Italian culture with its cuisine and language. Classed as a bit of a Monte Carlo, you’ll find celebrities frequenting the area of Lake Lugano shopping in fancy boutiques.

But Lugano isn’t just for the classy. If you like hiking and lush vegetation in a quiet, lazy environment, this city has a charm that will rejuvenate you ready for the next part of your trip.

Stroll along the promenade, relax in a park, take the funicular for lake views or meander around neoclassical palazzos. Explore St. Lawrence Cathedral, built in the 15th century or St. Mary of the Angels Church, two of the most important churches in the city.

Similar to other places in Switzerland, in Lugano, you’ll find museums and historic buildings. This area is also popular with outdoor activities and there are enough mountain biking trails to keep you active.

Plus you’ll find plenty of Swiss Heritage Sites nearby too. It’s easy to spend a day and night here seeing the mountains and self-guiding yourself around the old town and lake shores.

Switzerlands’ Culture

Delve into the Swiss cultures at Ballenberg , a living open-air museum with buildings dating back one hundred years. Experience Switzerland as it was back then with craftsmen and women demonstrating old crafts and trades from wood carving, basket weaving, spinning, weaving, cheese and bread making.

Bonigen  is a village alive with tradition, or take a trip to the mountain-farming village of Habkern. Here sits a 17th-century church where time-honoured Habkern traditions are still cultivated.

Other Places To Visit in Switzerland

Other best places to visit in Switzerland are; Biel which is great for shopping and has a really nice old town (different to others in Europe), Beatenberg which boasts one of the best ringside seats for views of the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau mountains.

If you have time hike in Gstaad,  enjoy the lake and cool bars at Langstrasse, or hike and immerse yourself in nature in Gimmelwald – the heart of the Swiss Alps.

If you love music then head to Montreux to see the Freddy Mercury statue which is 10 feet tall! Nature lovers should head to the Swiss National Park, Switzerland's largest nature reserve in the Engadin/Munstertal area.

Shop in Zurich, paraglide in Interlaken or take a panoramic train to the top of Europe at Jungfrau. There is so much to offer for women travelling to Switzerland alone.

G Adventures Switzerland

Solo travel in Switzerland is really easy but if you feel more comfortable in a group for either part of your trip or the whole duration, G Adventures is a responsible tour company which mainly caters towards budget travellers. Most small group tours have an average of 12 people and there is no upper age limit on their Switzerland tours.

Once you book your Switzerland trip you pay extra for any excursions you want to do when you’re there. If you are planning on seeing more countries than just Switzerland, their adventures range from a 7-day London to Rome trip, to a 10-day Trekking Mont Blanc tour to Switzerland, Italy and France.

There’s even an epic 26-day European Trail travelling from London to see 12 countries. I have personally used G Adventures and recommend them as a solo female-friendly company.  *  Check rates and availability for G Adventures Switzerland tours

Intrepid Travel Switzerland

Intrepid Travel is similar to G Adventures with an average of 12 people on their tours to Switzerland. They tend to use hotels instead of hostels and have a more comfortable style of accommodation hence the trips can appear a bit more costly than G Adventures. They offer a 10 day Best of Switzerland tour including the best Switzerland tourist attractions in Zurich, St Gallen, Lucerne, Bern and more. Read our  Intrepid Travel Reviews

Travelling around Switzerland. Solo travel in Switzerland

Switzerland has fantastic public transportation. There are train stations in many destinations with the main hubs being Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Basel, Lucerne, and Lausanne. But train travel can be quite costly so if you are travelling in Switzerland for a while, consider purchasing a Swiss Travel Pass.

Switzerland’s transport system is very organised making it easy to get around. The Swiss panorama rail routes are amongst the best in the world with stunning views through the panoramic roofs. For example, the train journey from Interlaken to Bern is stunning. The Bernina Red Train is one of the most famous as it's one of Europe's highest railway tracks and the steepest in the world.

Even if you decide to base yourself in the cities, there are regular Switzerland trains to mountain villages   Swiss Travel System is a Switzerland travel guide to help plan your trip.

The travel passes include unlimited travel by train, bus and boat for the whole of Switzerland (within a time span). Passes can be brought for just regions such as the Oberland region (you need to take your passport with you to buy a pass). The cheapest way to travel in Switzerland if you are not planning on visiting many destinations is to buy each journey separately.

For the towns which don't have train stations consider buses instead. The country has a good bus system making it easy to get to and from the smaller towns. The busiest bus routes run between the cities of Zurich, Basel, and Bern. Buy your tickets from the machines at the bus stops before you get on the bus. Click here for the bus timetables.

If you are touring Switzerland on your own, renting a car in Switzerland is easy to do. Ensure that the company has included a sticker that allows you to use the motorways (which should be included). Switzerland has speed cameras so be careful not to speed.

Companies such as Avis have car hire in Switzerland. Click here for car rental.

Switzerland has so many areas to visit that you could spend two weeks here seeing its highlights. If you only have 3 days in Switzerland, consider spending time in one of the cities. If you have 5 days in Switzerland you could combine two cities.

One week is a good amount of time to see the capital: Bern, Lucerne, and Lauterbrunnen. If you like shopping add an extra two days for shopping in Zurich afterwards. If you prefer to have one base during your stay, an alternative would be to stay in one city and visit different places on a train pass.

Below are examples of a Switzerland travel itinerary that are ideal  for a first-time visit to Switzerland.

Switzerland itinerary 5 days:

Lucerne (3 nights), Interlaken (2 nights)

You could also choose to stay in one city such as Zurich and take day trips to see other areas.

7 day Switzerland itinerary:

Switzerland itinerary 10 days:

Zurich (2 nights), Lucerne (3 nights), Interlaken (3 nights), Bern (2 nights)

For train lovers, this is the best Switzerland itinerary for Swiss scenery: Chur (1 night), take the Glacier Express train to Zermatt (2 nights), Montreal (2 nights), Interlaken (3 nights), Grindelwald (2 nights), day trip by mountain train to Jungfraujoch.

Switzerland has so many stunning destinations to explore. Consider lesser-visited places on your itinerary to ensure that your tourist dollar has an impact throughout the country and not just at the most popular attractions in the country such as The Matterhorn.

Consider visiting all year round too. There are plenty of winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and winter events that are also good for solos. Switzerland is a beautiful country to hike and is also safe too but ensure that you stick to any hiking trails so as not to damage the environment.

Take any rubbish with you too. Instead of flying internally which isn’t necessary for Switzerland. Reduce your carbon footprint by taking amazing panoramic trains around the country.

I’d be a solo traveller heading to Zurich airport. Is it easy to get from the airport to Grindelwald (or higher up the mountains) via train from Zurich airport? Also would this be safe as a female solo traveller? And where are suitable places to stay?

' src=

Hi Kate, it looks as though you can get a train from the Airport to Grindelwald which goes through Bern, then Interlaken. I recommend stopping at these places especially Interlaken. Switzerland is so safe so you’ll have no problems solo. Look at getting a Swiss Pass to save money on trains and museums. I recommend Youth Hostel Zurich, Pension fuerDich or Synergy Village. We’re bringing out a Switzerland ebook this month so feel free to subscribe if you want to be notified of it. This site may also help with transport https://www.rome2rio.com/s/Zurich-Airport-ZRH/Grindelwald

I am a female solo traveler planning on traveling to Switzerland in late December or ealry January and just checked you site. I am also on a low budget, so I was wondering what are the number one towns or cities to visit during this time, especially during the holidays.

Also any advice on clothing needed during this time.

Hi Karen, I would definitely say Lucern. That’s my favourite place in Switzerland. There are hostels there too. I’m just working on the Girl about the Globe’s Guide to Switzerland which may help x

Hi Lisa, I’m actually just writing the Girl about the Globe’s Guide to Switzerland which will be out next month. Email me on [email protected] and I can send you a free copy when it’s out if you are happy to write a review x

Hey! I’m thinking of going to Switzerland for a week in august. I’m interested in doing all the things you’ve mentioned above. I want to visit the city and also do active things at interlaken. Would I have to stay at multiple locations or can I book one hostel and travel to all those places as day trips? Please let me know! I’ve never had to plan a solo trip before and am getting kind of nervous. Thanks 🙂

Hi Kyoohee, that’s great that you are going to Switzerland in August. It’s easy to get around by train so it depends on what you want to see. I definitely recommend staying in Lucerne and Lauterbrunnen. From there you can do day trips. The Girl about the Globe’s Guide to Switzerland will be published this week so I recommend joining our Facebook community to ask more. The group will also stop you feeling nervous 🙂 Here is the link – https://www.facebook.com/groups/369115206621307/

I want to travel Switzerland and Italy for a trip about 7 to 8days alone with my family, but I have less idea on what rail pass would be good and cheap and would be preferred for my journey ,including the cost .

Can any one aslo suggest where can I find cheap hotels in Switzerland and Italy

Hi Abhijeet, thanks for your comment. I always use Booking.com and filter by the cheapest accommodation. Plus Hostels are in Italy and they are great value. You can buy a rail pass for up 8 days which may be ideal for you. It costs CHF 765 for an adult. Here’s the link https://www.swiss-pass.ch/swiss-pass/ Have an amazing time.

Hi Kanwal, that’s great that you’ll be visiting Switzerland next month. The train network is really comprehensive and you can reach all of them via train. I recommend buying a Swiss travel pass http://www.girlabouttheglobe.com/SwissTravelPass . This is a great website for checking train times etc https://www.swisstravelsystem.co.uk

I just realized that I have only one item on my bucket list – sit on a farm in Switzerland until the “cows come home” ; ) You have covered all my trepidations and given me hope that I can go it alone. Thank you for thinking of everything.

A lot of great information about various spots around Switzerland. Unfortunately, there’s little to nothing in regards to being a solo traveler (as opposed to a couple or group), which I thought was the point of the post.

Hi Matthew, thanks for taking the time to read the article. It covers solo travel in Switzerland at the beginning and recommended accommodation and tour companies for solos. Because Switzerland is so safe, it does read as though it could be for anyone because every destination is fine for solos. If you’re planning to go, have an amazing time x

The route conveniently begins and ends in Geneva and is completely accessible by public transportation. Pick and choose among the activities and attractions featured here based on your interests and the time allotted for your trip. Customize the itinerary by choosing additional hiking and biking trails from the SwitzerlandMobility website , or download the free SwitzerlandMobility app.

DAY ONE: GENEVA TO MONTREUX

GET THERE BY CAR A1 > A9/E62 BY PUBLIC TRANSIT IR (InterRegio) train > Montreux Gare

GREEN SPACE Before heading out from Geneva, visit one or more of the city’s urban oases. Jardin Anglais (English Garden) is the place to see the famous horloge fleurie , the living (and precise) flower clock celebrating Geneva’s watch industry. Grange Park is known for its impressive rose gardens, free summer concerts, and popular Swiss National Day celebration (August 1). Located in the heart of the city, Bois de la Bâtie is a 30-acre woodland with walking trails, a children’s playground, and a zoo. In warmer weather, the Conservatory and Botanical Garden is the perfect setting for an early morning stroll or a picnic lunch.

PEDAL POWER Free rentals (mid-April to mid-October) and miles of cycling lanes make it easy to tour Geneva by bike. Or rent a mountain, road, touring, or electric bike from Bike Switzerland Rentals to explore the pedaling possibilities in the wider Lake Geneva region. (Note: Bike Switzerland Rentals will reopen in mid-March.) Routes include the four-stage Swiss portion of the Tour du Léman. The well-marked path runs from Geneva along the northern lakeshore through Les Grangettes, a nature preserve and sanctuary for migratory birds in Vaud. Bike Switzerland also offers half- and full-day guide services.

BACK TO NATURE For hiking and mountain biking, or snowshoeing and skiing (in winter), head into the woods, glades, river gorges, and pasturelands of Jura Park, located south of the Joux Valley. The nature park includes 325 miles of trails; the Juraparc zoo , where brown bears, wolves, bison, Przewalski’s horses, and other animals roam in natural-terrain enclosures; and Lac de Joux—the Jura Mountains’ largest lake.

EAT Café du Grütli , Lausanne

STAY Fairmont Le Montreux Palace , Montreux

DAY TWO: MONTREUX TO ZERMATT

GET THERE BY CAR A9 > Route 9 BY PUBLIC TRANSIT IR train > Visp; R (Regio) train > Zermatt

VINEYARD TRAILS Stop in Sierre to walk the wine trail to Salgesch (two and a half hours one way). The well-marked 3.7-mile route (one way) begins at the 16th-century Château de Villa in Sierre, ends at the Wine Museum in Salgesch, and passes wineries and vineyards.

PLAY IN THE SNOW If it’s snow season, spend the day at 4 Vallées , Switzerland’s largest winter-sports hub. The area is home to six mountain resorts ( Verbier , Bruson , La Tzoumaz , Nendaz , Veysonnaz , and Thyon ); three tricked-out snow parks for big-air freestyle skiing and snowboarding; and a dizzying array of snow-play possibilities, including downhill and Nordic skiing, snowshoeing, dogsledding, and snow golf.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN For all-season outdoor activities, take a bus from the Sion or Sierre train station to Crans-Montana —twin Alpine resort towns located at an elevation of 4,921 feet. Warm-weather options include world-class golfing, swimming in five lakes, forest and canal hiking trails, and the chance to hike on the Plaine Morte glacial plateau. In winter, there are 87 miles of mostly intermediate downhill trails to choose from. For the best views—and longest run in the region—take the seven-and-a-half-mile trail from Plaine Morte into the forested valley of Les Barzettes. Plan your visit to coincide with one of the area’s annual sporting events, such as the traditional Valais combats de reines (cow fights).

EAT Cabane du Mont-Fort , 4 Vallées

STAY W Verbier ski-in/ski-out hotel, Verbier

DAY THREE: FULL DAY IN ZERMATT

GETTING AROUND Zermatt is car free. Walk, bike, and use cable cars.

HIT THE SLOPES Zermatt is one of a handful of mountain resorts in the world open for skiing or snowboarding any day of the year. At an elevation of about 13,000 feet, Matterhorn Ski Paradise is Europe’s highest year-round ski area. In winter, there’s a full slate of traditional snow activities available, plus thrilling mountain adventures such as heli-skiing, moonlight descents, and high-speed tobogganing. In summer, downhill ski or tube at Matterhorn Glacier Paradise (on the Theodul Glacier), freestyle ski or snowboard in Snowpark Zermatt (on Plateau Rosa in summer and on the Theodul Glacier in winter).

TAKE A HIKE With nearly 250 miles of high-Alpine hiking trails in the Zermatt region, it’s easy to find a route to match your interests. Options include winter hikes, year-round walks, and epic treks, such as the rugged climb to the Hörnli hut, where the first climbers to summit the Matterhorn started their ascent in July 1865. The trail network includes themed hikes (most open June to September), including the circular Five Lakes Walk, where you can see the Matterhorn reflected in mirror-calm lake water.

RUMBLE AND ROLL Zermatt-Matterhorn has cycling, mountain biking, e-biking (electric bikes), and dirt scooter (fat-tire motorbike) paths to fit every ability level. A popular downhill ride for more experienced mountain bikers is the 12-mile Gornergrat-Zermatt bike trail , open June to October. The route passes the Grünsee (Green Lake), where you can take a quick dip to cool off, and offers spectacular Matterhorn vistas. Families with children ages nine and up will particularly enjoy rumbling from Sunnegga down to Zermatt on a kickbike , a sturdy bike-scooter hybrid (open late May to October).

EAT Walliserstube Zermatt , Zermatt

STAY Cervo Mountain Boutique Resort , Zermatt

DAY FOUR: ZERMATT TO ST. MORITZ

GET THERE BY CAR Route 9 > A13 > Route 3 (Note: Route crosses into Italy.) BY PUBLIC TRANSIT Glacier Express train (not available late October to early December) > St. Moritz; or R train > Visp; IC (InterCity) train > Zurich HB; ICE (InterCity Express) train > Landquart; RE (RegioExpress) train > St. Moritz

EXPLORE MORE There’s always one more reason to stay outdoors in Engadin/St. Moritz. In winter there are more than 200 miles of downhill skiing (including the steepest start slope in Switzerland), plus networks of Nordic and winter walking trails, snowboarding, horse-drawn sleigh rides, skating, sledding, and more. In summer, there’s hiking and biking, plus surfing, sailing, swimming, and stand-up paddleboarding on the Engadin mountain lakes.

STORYBOOK SETTING Zuoz , an enchanting Romansh village near St. Moritz, is an idyllic base for winter and summer hiking, Nordic and downhill skiing (plus a ski school for kids), or in-line skating on two official in-line skating routes. Rent in-line skates and helmets, bikes, downhill and roller skis, and other sports gear at Willy Sport .

WILD SIDE Take the Rhaetian Railway home to Zernez, gateway to Swiss National Park . Covering 66 square miles, the park is a natural sanctuary and home to more than 5,000 species of animals, more than 650 flowering plant species, and 50 miles of hiking trails.

EAT Stars , Silvaplana

STAY Suvretta House , St. Moritz

DAY FIVE : ST. MORITZ TO LUCERNE

GET THERE BY CAR A13 > A3 BY PUBLIC TRANSIT R train > Chur; IC train > Zurich; IR train > Lucerne

SHIP TO SHORE Get your bearings on a scenic Lake Lucerne boat cruise . Private charters, sailing yachts, and motorboats cross the lake, but the trip to take is aboard one of the five vintage steamboats. The historic steamers run daily year-round. Cruises last from one to five hours, most—including the popular lunch cruise —offer sumptuous culinary options, and many connect to hiking paths, cable car routes, and other attractions or locations around the lake. In winter, buy a Klewenalp Snow Pass to cruise from Lucerne to Beckenried, and ride the cableway up to the Klewenalp-Stockkhütte winter-sports area for a day of skiing or sledding.

WILDLIFE Bird-watchers will enjoy exploring the new (opened in 2015) Swiss Ornithological Institute visitors center, located about 20 minutes (by train and bus) northwest of Lucerne on the shore of Sempachersee (Lake Sempach). In addition to spotting wild birds and learning about their habitats, you can learn about the institute’s efforts to protect Switzerland’s native birdlife and develop sustainable agriculture and forestry. The institute is closed on Mondays. From Lucerne, take the RE train to Sempach Station and transfer to the number 84 bus toward Sempach Stadt.

HERITAGE HIKING Lake Lucerne’s German name, Vierwaldstättersee (meaning “lake of the four forested cantons”), celebrates the lake’s historic significance. Bordering (and sharing) the lake are the three founding cantons of the Old Swiss Confederacy (Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden), plus the canton of Lucerne. Canton Uri is the birthplace of modern Switzerland and is a hiker’s dream destination. Take a Lake Lucerne steamer to the southernmost stop (Flüelen) to connect to the aerial cableways climbing to Uri’s hiking regions and spectacularly scenic mountain trails—including the Schächentaler highland path from Eggberge up to 6,391-foot-high Klausen Pass.

EAT Wirtshaus Galliker , Lucerne

DAY SIX: LUCERNE TO INTERLAKEN

GET THERE BY CAR A8 BY PUBLIC TRANSIT : IR train > Interlaken Ost

ADVENTURE TIME Interlaken is known as the “adventure capital of Europe.” Local outdoor sports outfitters such as Alpin Raft and Outdoor Interlaken offer an array of activities, including guided ice climbing excursions and trips to Seilpark Interlaken , a wooded aerial playground with zip lines, ropes courses, and wooden bridges. Outings typically include gear, guides, instruction, and transportation from Interlaken hotels. In winter, go night sledding on the hour-long sled run from Sulwald to Interlaken.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

WATER SPORTS Interlaken is named for its position between two deep-blue lakes (Thun and Brienz), so it’s no wonder the village is a water-sports hub. Late spring to early fall, local outfitters offer rentals, lessons, and guided tours for activities such as stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, boating, water skiing, and wakeboarding. Or, hold on tight for a high-speed ride aboard Jetboat Interlaken . Beyond the lakes, choose from thrilling white-water rafting on the Lütschine and Simme Rivers, relaxing float trips on the Aare River, and canyoning adventures in nearby Saxeten Gorge.

TAKE FLIGHT Get a bird’s-eye view of the Jungfrau region by paragliding or tandem hang gliding in the skies above Interlaken. Tours typically last 90 minutes to two hours and, weather permitting, may be available year-round. For an added adrenaline rush, try bungee jumping or skydiving out of a helicopter. High-flying options available through Skydive Interlaken include helicopter jumps above Interlaken, over the Lauterbrunnen valley, and even along and in front of the Eiger’s legendary north face.

EAT Brasserie 17 , Interlaken

STAY Landhotel Golf & Salzano Spa , Interlaken

DAY SEVEN: INTERLAKEN TO THE JUNGFRAU SKI REGION

GET THERE BY PUBLIC TRANSIT (From Interlaken Ost) R train > Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald; R train > Kleine Scheidegg; R train > Jungfraujoch

WATER WORKS April to November, take the train to Lauterbrunnen to visit Trümmelbach Falls: ten glacial waterfalls inside a mountain. Venture underground via elevator to access the fall’s tunnels, paths, and viewing platforms.

PANORAMIC PATH In summer, hike the classic Männlichen–Kleine Scheidegg highland trail and enjoy majestic high-Alpine views of the Eiger, the Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks, plus the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald Valleys. An added bonus is the scenic cable car ride to the trailhead in Männlichen, beginning at an elevation of 7,290 feet. From here it’s an easy 60- to 90-minute hike down to Kleine Scheidegg (elevation 6,762 feet), one of the best vantage points to watch daring climbers tackle the Eiger’s north face.

TOP ADVENTURE The Jungfrau ski region offers adrenaline-pumping outdoor fun year-round. Ride the First cableway from Grindelwald to try some of the Jungfrau “top of Europe” activities experiences, such as the First Cliff Walk by Tissot summit trail (including a daring walk across a 131-foot suspension bridge), the half-mile-long First Flyer zip line, and the downhill Trottibike (nonmotorized scooter) ride from Bort to Grindelwald.

KING OF THE HILL Board the cogwheel Jungfrau Railway in Kleine Scheidegg for the 50-minute climb to the Jungfraujoch , a spectacularly scenic recreation and entertainment complex including Europe’s highest altitude railway station (located 2,300 feet below the 13,642-foot summit of the Jungfrau). At the top, hike across or zip line over the Aletsch Glacier, sled and tube on the year-round snow, tour the hand-carved ice palace, and explore the ice tunnels under the glacier.

Switzerland Tours & Travel Guide

Switzerland Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Coronavirus update.

Travelers are required to undergo mandatory quarantine upon entering Switzerland, for those arriving from areas of high risk .

More important Covid-19 information for t ravelers

With its snow-covered alpine peaks, clear mountain lakes and rivers (with cruise boats), miles of beautifully marked and maintained hiking trails, vibrant cities, scenic railway trips that run on the dot, three separate cultures -- German, French and Italian -- and some of the world's cleanest lodgings and eateries, Switzerland combines nature and urbanity in a seamless way, like few other places in Europe .

Switzerland can lay a good claim to being the world’s most beautiful country.

With the snow-capped Swiss Alps and a raft of deep blue lakes gleaming in the sunshine, the pastoral hills with cows grazing peacefully on verdant slopes, the rivers coursing through steep gorges, and the well-maintained hiking trails snaking through them all, you can experience an outdoor setting with few rivals.

The villages, and even the largest cities, are neat as a pin and almost impossibly picturesque, with church steeples and medieval towers dominating the skylines and A-frame chalets dotting the hillsides.

You can ride boats across or around the lakes, ride trains large and small through the most scenic areas, and dine on delicious specialties such as rosti potatoes, raclette (a melted cheese dish), cheese fondue, and of course Swiss chocolate.

Everything runs on time in Switzerland, so if your cell phone is out of juice, you may want to pick up one of the famously accurate Swiss watches. City streetcars and buses run on the honor system for payment, but spot checks that find you without a ticket will cost you a small fortune in Swiss francs. (Swiss efficiency can have its drawbacks.)

Top Ten Cities to Visit in Switzerland

Zurich . Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and the hotspot for nightlife, shopping, and museums. It is also the starting point for many tours and trips around Switzerland.

Geneva . Geneva is the headquarters for the Red Cross and sections of the United Nations, making it a global and progressive city. Located on the shores of picturesque Lake Geneva, Geneva is perfect for those looking for a relaxed environment with a sophisticated, metropolitan vibe.

Basel . Basel sits along the Rhine River, making it a perfect stop on a Rhine River cruise. The city has an old-fashioned feel, with cobblestoned streets and majestic architecture.

Lucerne . Lucerne is located in the German-speaking portion of Switzerland and is known for its historic Old Town and beautiful nearby hiking trails.

Zermatt . Zermatt is known for its location right under the Matterhorn. It is a car-free town, so people get around by walking. If you are planning on hiking in Switzerland, this is a prime destination.

Interlaken . Interlaken is known as a resort town, but is also extremely popular among young backpackers and families. The town also offers some of the best skydiving views in Europe.

Bern . Although lesser-known by tourists, Bern is the capital of Switzerland and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Thun . The beautiful village of Thun is an ideal destination for history lovers, with medieval castles dating back to the 12th century.

St. Gallen . With baroque cathedrals and painted oriol windows, St. Gallen is an architecture-lover’s paradise.

Sion . Sion is known for getting the most sun of any town in Switzerland, and is filled with luxurious summer and winter resorts.

Switzerland Souvenirs

A trip to Switzerland isn’t complete without bringing home a carry-on’s worth of chocolate, cheese, and Swiss-designed trinkets. The Swiss take pride in their carved toys and ornaments; tourists can buy the highest quality cuckoo-clocks and music boxes.

Switzerland is filled with street markets selling locally-made souvenirs, and if you’re looking for a luxurious gift for yourself or a loved one, Switzerland has world-class watches and jewelry. While a block of Swiss cheese might not fare well in your suitcase, a ceramic cheese fondue set will serve as a longer-lasting memory.

And while the triangle-shaped Toblerone chocolate is a famous Swiss staple, it is easily available in most countries and online-- visit a local chocolatier shop for a more unique option.

Cultural Activities in Switzerland

Switzerland has many cultural festivals, the most popular being Paleo, a folk festival in Nyon that usually headlines popular artists, and Sechseläuten, a traditional spring festival.

Asides from festivals, there are year-round cultural activities for travelers to enjoy, including museums, art galleries, and cathedrals. Switzerland also boasts 12 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Bern Old Town and the Abbey of St. Gall.

Taking the Train in Switzerland

Many tours of Switzerland include a ride on one or more of the country’s trains, renowned for their punctuality and cleanliness, and their large windows which come in very handy to view the spectacular scenery.

Train tours in Switzerland are a classic activity when visiting the country. Trains are much connected with the culture and history of Switzerland and provide the perfect way to learn about the Swiss culture as you wind your way through alpine mountains, meadows, villages, and take in the spectacular scenery all around.

Here are some of the top train journeys you can enjoy in Switzerland:

Bernina Express

This exciting train journey travels through far eastern and southern Switzerland.

You can ride the incredible Bernina Express from the city of Chur (or the resort town of St. Moritz) to the Italian-Swiss town of Poschiavo and continue to Tirano across the border in Italy via the Alps, as you climb and dip repeatedly around steep curves.

If you are afraid of heights, you may want to consider another Switzerland train trip. No less than 196 bridges are crossed along your journey on the Bernina Express.

Glacier Express

Equally scenic is the Glacier Express, which runs from St. Moritz through the Alps to Zermatt, in the shadow of the Matterhorn. The full trip, which takes seven hours, crosses nearly 300 bridges, runs through nearly 100 tunnels, climbs mountains (up to 6,600 feet at Oberalp Pass ) and snakes through deep gorges.

This is one of the longest routes for Switzerland’s scenic train journeys. While it’s possible to pick it up at one of the many stops along the way, many travelers opt to take the entire route.

Chocolate Train

Dive into Switzerland’s extensive chocolate cultural history aboard this delectable journey. Don’t be dissuaded if you’re not interested in chocolate. On this train trip, you will also sample cheese - Switzerland’s other famous food group.

You’ll begin with a tour of Gruyere Castle (not a castle of cheese, sadly). After which enjoy a leisurely lunch in town. Which will include the famous namesake, Gruyere.

Continue on to the Cailler-Nestle chocolate factory in Broc. This is a very popular Switzerland tour activity, and though it may be a bit crowded and tourists, it’s a fun afternoon nonetheless.

Jungfraujoch Cog Railway

The most amazing train may be the Jungfraujoch, a cog railway that climbs up the adjacent alpine peaks of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch to Europe’s highest train station at more than 11,000 feet, a remarkable feat of engineering completed a century ago. From the top, you have panoramic views of the valleys and villages below – and can play in the snow if you wish.

Switzerland's Resort Areas

St. Moritz and Zermatt – which make up the two ends of the Glacier Express route -- are probably the best known. Both are in German-speaking Switzerland and both feature excellent alpine skiing. But they’re also very pleasant places to stay in the summer, offering exceptional hiking in cooler temperatures than most places in Europe at that time.

If you really want to experience alpine climbing, however, sign up for a guided expedition up the Matterhorn, whose spiral shape forms the iconic image of Disneyland. This is no Disney adventure, though – while a few thousand people make the climb every year, some never come back. It’s not for novices.

But fear not. If you want to see the famous mountain, you don’t need to sign up for a life threatening mountaineering tour. The Matterhorn is a classic Swiss natural landmark, also visible from safe distances. Your tour guide will point out the best viewing opportunities!

Another popular resort area is Lake Constance in northwest Switzerland, which also shares borders with Germany and Austria . A cycling path circles the entire lake.

One often overlooked resort area is the Interlaken-Wengen-Grindelwald region , which lies in the shadow of the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch. The area features superb hiking, and scenery, including dozens of little trains climbing the hills to a variety of villages. The three mentioned here are all considered to be in the top ten of scenic Swiss villages.

Hiking and Walking Tours in Switzerland

Walking tours of Switzerland are extremely popular. Classic alpine hills provide the quintessential Swiss experience, as you explore small towns nestled high in the mountains. These can be accessed by strenuous hikes, but one of the unique things about Switzerland is that they don’t have to be.

Attractive to many older travelers, Switzerland’s alpine meadows aren’t a pipe dream! Easily accessible by the many cog railways, it’s possible to breathe that mountain air without over exertion. Many walking tours will stay in luxury mountain lodges, allowing you plenty of time to rest up for another full day outside among the wildflowers.

If you are a hiker, this can be an exhilarating way to experience Switzerland's famous alps. Make sure you’re up for the challenge! The mountains are no joke, even though Captain Von Trapp made it look easy. Most hiking tours through the alps don’t involve camping and you will stay in moderate by comfortable lodges and hotels along the way.

Some of the most popular hikes in Switzerland include:

Champlönch Children's Trail : As the name might suggest, this is one of the simplest trails in Switzerland, but no less beautiful than some of the more demanding hikes. A great option for families with young children, as you walk among the meadows and enjoy the alpine air of this 100 year old nature reserve. You’ll end at Hotel Il Fuorn, which is no longer a functioning hotel, but serves as a base to rest before heading back to the train.

Mont Blanc : a great through-hike experience for first timers. You’ll stay in classic mountain villas and lodges along the way, enjoying delicious local cuisine, and experiencing the hospitality of small Alpine villages. The mountain views are impeccable - some of the best in all of Switzerland. A tour of Mont Blanc can be experienced in many ways, from luxury to hard core trekking, but trekking is appealing to many for the accomplishment of crossing three international borders on foot.

Read more about  The Tour du Mont Blanc and the top 10 treks in the world >>

The Eiger Trail : within view of three mountain peaks that sound like they should be characters in a classic fairy tale, “ the Ogre, Monk and Maiden” (Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau), the Eiger is a challenging by manageable trail. Roughly two hours long, among spectacular views of the Jungfrau region, the trail is accessed by one of Switzerland’s renowned mountain trails. More serious climbers often brave the mountainsides in this area, and hikers along the 3.7 mile Eiger trail can sometimes see them - bring binoculars!

Aletsch Trail : for sweeping glacier views of Great Aletsch Glacier, this hike is long, but moderate  - most relatively physically fit travelers will be able to enjoy the 7 mile trail. Feel like you’re in Lord of the Rings as you follow rock steps, and snow capped peaks flank you on either side. Along the way you’ll reach beautiful Lake Märjelen where an apple tart from Restaurant Gletscherstube is not to be passed up.

Outdoor Activities in Switzerland (besides hiking)

Many people travel to Switzerland for its expansive hiking trails, but there are many other outdoor activities to try out. Switzerland boasts some of the world’s best ski resorts, as well as many cross-country and snowshoeing trails.

A top winter destination in Switzerland is Zermatt, where skiers can ski under the Matterhorn and stay at one of the town’s luxury resorts. Summer travelers can kayak, paddleboard, and swim on turquoise alpine lakes, the largest and most popular being Lake Geneva, Lake Zurich, and Lake Brienz (Interlaken). For bird’s-eye views, try skydiving or paragliding.

Food in Switzerland

What can you expect from the cuisine of Switzerland? Well, for starters, what you’re probably thinking right now is actually true. Chocolate and Swiss cheese will feature prominently on your Switzerland tour! But there are many other things as well to try.

Swiss food features a lot of cheese, potatoes, and has a rustic homey vibe. Most dishes have a regional variety, though are popular throughout the country.

Here are some of the top can’t miss foods to try in Switzerland:

1. Fondue - Another classic Switzerland food experience. This delicious and gooey meal has many modern iterations in today’s food scene, but the traditional way to serve and make it is still the most prominent in Switzerland. This involves melted swiss cheese and chunks of thick country bread. Usually enjoyed in the wintertime, it has snuck into the other seasons as well to the delight of travelers who visit year round.

2. Raclette -  Sometimes confused to be synonymous with Fondue, Raclette is in fact it’s own specific dish. Though it does involve melted cheese. Raclette is a hard round cheese that, when melted becomes a soft piece of heaven. The old way to prepare it involved a hot stone - today the process is similar but a bit more advanced than stone. Special Raclette pots are used to heat the cheese which is then scraped off into a bowl or onto individual plates. Various meats and vegetables are then dipped into the delicious, strong tasting cheese.

3. Chocolate - The Swiss are among the largest consumers of chocolate in the entire world, eating on average 23 pounds per person per year. So if you really want the local experience in Switzerland, you will have to sample some chocolate. What a shame! Luckily there are many ways to eat chocolate in Switzerland while also learning about chocolate history with the country or just having a lot of fun, including chocolate festivals, chocolate museums, and chocolate tours.

The Swiss legacy with chocolate began in the 1800s when this most delectable of products from South America began arriving in Europe. Swiss innovators added milk to the mixture, turning the traditionally dark flavors of cacao sweeter and more welcoming to European palates. Many recognizable names from this era come to the surface: Tobler and Nestle among them.

4. Leckerli - A Christmas tradition in Switzerland, these gingerbread biscuits have German roots, but have been enjoyed throughout Switzerland for centuries. If you’re touring Switzerland at other times of the year, you may still find Leckerli, but it is most commonly enjoyed during winter. A delicious treat to have strolling through idyllic Christmas markets with twinkling lights and softly falling snow.

5. Rosti - A classic potato pancake, made from shaved raw potato which is then fried. This dish is served all over the country - though it began as a traditional farmer breakfast in the Bern region. Often regions around Switzerland will add their own touches to Rosti, such as onions or cheese. You’re sure to encounter many versions of Rosti on your Switzerland tour!

Switzerland's 4 National Languages

Sharing borders with Italy, France, Germany, and Austria, it should come as no surprise that there are 4 national languages in Switzerland.

German is the most widely spoken, followed by French, then Italian. The fourth most popular language spoken is called Romansh. This is the official language of a small Swiss canton in the far eastern part of the country. It was established as a national language in 1938.

Approximately 70,000 people speak this language, which is primarily influenced by German, and descended from the latin of the Roman Empire.

Weather in Switzerland

Not counting the Alpine regions, Switzerland has a relatively mild climate. It gets quite cold in the wintertime and summers are generally temperate with the highest temperatures hovering in the mid 90s. Summer can be rainy too however, with temperatures in the high 50s (F).

The Alps is an entirely different story. Mountain weather is notoriously difficult to predict. In the eastern Swiss Alpine regions, you can expect cold but very dry conditions. The Western Alps tend to get more precipitation. The best time to visit the Swiss Alps for hiking is between June and September.

Some of the mildest weather in the Alps occurs between April and June and in the Fall. If you’re visiting Switzerland during the months of August and September and October, this is a great time to visit wineries during harvest.
