  • Low Season (Nov–Mar) The winters are usually cold and snowy and the sights and restaurants are open fewer days and shorter hours. However, in ski resorts only, late December to early April is considered to be their high season.

Getting Around

The best way to travel around Switzerland is discovering some of the most beautiful panoramic routes of the Swiss Railway. Explore the different regions and their cultures with the comfort, ease and efficiency of Switzerland's iconic rail journeys.

GLACIER EXPRESS The world's slowest express train connecting railway stations of the two major mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz via Andermatt in the central Swiss Alps. The train journey on the Glacier Express takes you over spectacular bridges and through several tunnels, right across a picturesque landscape travelling towards the Oberalppass, the Glacier Express reaches 2,033 metres above sea level as its highest point. GOLDEN PASS The Golden Pass train journey undoubtedly reflects the diversity of Switzerland. The ultra-modern trains that operate on the Golden Pass Panoramic line have some unique features. In addition to being extremely comfortable, they are fitted with panoramic windows. Thanks to these windows, you can immerse yourself in the nature outside as you glide past. BERNINA EXPRESS On the highest railway across the Alps, the Bernina Express climbs up to the glistening glaciers before descending to the palms of Italy far below. The train negotiates the 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and inclines with ease. At the highest point on the RhB, 2,253 metres above sea level, you will find the Ospizio Bernina. Here, visitors can delight in the cultural and natural surroundings and enjoy the Alps at their most impressive. The railway line from Thusis - Valposchiavo - Tirano has UNESCO World Heritage status.  GOTTHARD PANORAMA EXPRESS Embark on a journey through some of the most beautiful regions in Switzerland. By boat and train you can enjoy the views of central Switzerland and Ticino’s wonderful mountain landscapes, natural wonders and marvels of railway construction. The journey on the Gotthard Panorama Express takes travellers from Lucerne by boat to Flüelen and onwards by train on the historical Gotthard panoramic route to Ticino VORALPEN-EXPRESS The Voralpen-Express, which operates an hourly service between Lucerne and St. Gallen, is the most convenient and beautiful rail link connecting central and eastern Switzerland. Travel past the peaks of the Schwyzer Mythen and the stunning high-moorland plateau of Rothenthurm towards the hills of Toggenburg and across a 99m high railway viaduct, which is the highest in Switzerland. CENTOVALLI RAILWAY The Centovalli railway offers a unique train journey across remote valleys in northern Italy and southern Switzerland. The scenic route runs through the Centovalli (meaning "100 valleys" in Italian) travelling over rocky gorges, past quaint stone villages, and many waterfalls as it winds its way through the narrow valleys in the region.

Another option to discover the best of Switzerland is surely with the freedom of a self-drive holiday.

Swiss roads are well built, well signposted and well maintained and major car-rental companies have offices at airports and in major cities and towns. Most major Alpine passes are negotiable year-round, depending on the weather. However, you will often have to use a tunnel instead at the Great St Bernard, St Gotthard and San Bernardino passes. Passes that are open only from June to October: Albula, Furka, Grimsel, Klausen, Oberalp, Susten and Umbrail. Other passes are Lukmanier (open May to November), Nufenen (June to September) and Splügen (May to October).

Top 5 culinary classics of Switzerland

3. Bircher Muesli

This Swiss-German classic has taken off worldwide as a breakfast food, although it was originally created for hospital patients by a Swiss physician. Commonly eaten in the evening in southern Switzerland, it's a nutritious mix of oats, fruits and seeds.

This brioche-like, plaited bread is a traditional Sunday morning treat in Switzerland. Dating back to the 15th century, this delicious bread can be found in bakeries all over Switzerland, especially on Sundays.

Making hundreds of varieties of cheese, Switzerland is one of the best places in the world to indulge in a dose of calcium. Whether it's a chunk of hard Gruyere, a slice of Emmental or a bit of fruity Appenzeller, Switzerland has enough cheese shops to satisfy everyone.

Or if you’re in the Old Town and fancy a vantage point, you can walk up Lindenhof Hill for sweeping views over the city.

Check in: Passengers will be arriving at various times throughout the day. If arriving prior to standard check-in time, which is generally 3pm local time, you are welcome to leave your luggage with hotel reception and explore your surroundings until check-in becomes available, as there are generally no scheduled activities on Day 1 of the itinerary. The hotel may grant early check-in, however this is strictly subject to availability and at the hotel’s discretion.

Day 2 Zurich

Wake up to a delicious Swiss breakfast, then take a stroll along the famous Bahnhofstrasse — Zurich's shopping paradise. A quick detour will lead you to the narrower cobbled streets of Zurich's Old Town and its smaller, independent artisan shops. Use your included 24-hour Zurich Card for local transport and various discounts across the city. Be sure to not miss the picturesque waterfront promenades!

Day 3 Zurich Lucerne

After breakfast, transfer by rail to Lucerne in Central Switzerland, situated in an enviable location surrounded by a stunning lake and mountain panorama. The historic town of Lucerne attracts visitors globally with its well-preserved old town, countless shops and restaurants. A visit to Chapel Bridge, which has stood the test of time as a traditional crossing for locals, is one of many highlights that are sure to impress.

Please note that the maximum luggage allowance is 23 kg due to train compartment restrictions.

Day 4 Lucerne Flüelen Gotthard Panorama Express Lugano

This morning, the Gotthard Panorama Express takes you from the heart of Switzerland, with a journey through Lake Lucerne on a paddle steamer boat.  From Flüelen, travel by first-class panoramic train to Lugano, a picturesque lakeside town in Switzerland’s Italian-speaking Ticino region.

Use the provided guest card to take full advantage of local transport and explore nearby villages, such as the pretty village of Morcote.

Day 5 Lugano Tirano Bernina Express St. Moritz

Board the Bernina Express bus after breakfast, and enjoy a scenic drive to Italy-based Tirano where you join the Bernina Express panoramic train across the border back to Switzerland. You will travel over circular viaducts and pass through winding tunnels, with highlights including the Brusio Circular Viaduct and a photo stop at Alp Grüm.

Arrive in St. Moritz, a luxury alpine resort town in Switzerland’s Engadin valley, and spend the rest of the day at leisure. This luxury alpine resort town, a favourite for celebrities and royals, is surely one of the world’s most famous winter sports resorts. This was the first mountain village in the country to have a ski school, a tram and electric lighting. The Winter Olympics have been held here twice. It’s a renowned ski destination.

Day 6 St. Moritz

A full day awaits to explore St. Moritz, where guests from all over the world appreciate the modern Alpine lifestyle. Take advantage of your included guest card to visit the local area. We suggest the nearby mountains of Muottas Murgal or Diavolezza for incredible views that are not to be missed. Various sights including the leaning tower, a remnant of the Mauritius Church from around 1500, or the Segantini Museum, offer unique insight into the city’s fascinating history.

Day 7 St. Moritz Glacier Express Zermatt

Ride the world‐famous Glacier Express to Zermatt today, a gorgeous village near the Italian border. Be enthralled by Switzerland’s spectacular scenery, thanks to oversized, panoramic windows that make for an unforgettable experience. Along the deep Rhone valley, the Glacier Express travels through an incredibly fascinating part of the Alps. The route famously takes you through 91 tunnels and 291 bridges, offering unrivalled views. Make sure to have your camera handy! Optionally, you may wish to dine at your seat with a delicious 3-course meal served on your table (additional charges apply).

Day 8 Zermatt

Zermatt lies at the foot of the iconic Matterhorn peak. The town's touristic development is closely linked to what is arguably the world's most famous mountain. This car‐free resort offers guests an abundance of activities such as visits to the local mountains of Gornergrat or the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. It is also home to the highest open-air cog railway in Europe.

Day 9 Zermatt Montreux

Continue by train to Montreux, nestled between steep hills and the lakeside of Lake Geneva. The town's promenade is lined with flowers, sculptures, Mediterranean trees and grand Belle Époque buildings. Nearby attractions include the medieval island castle, Chateau de Chillon and the vineyards of the Lavaux region.

Day 10 Montreux GoldenPass Express Wilderswil

Your journey continues by train on the GoldenPass Express through the wild and romantic Pays d'Enhaut, complete with scenic villages and crystal-clear lakes at every corner.

Interlaken is a laidback resort town, presided over by three mighty mountains, Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It makes a great base from which to explore the Bernese Oberland. Unprecedented views of the Swiss Alps give an impression of what is to come during your stay.

Höheweg, the main promenade of Interlaken, is lovely for a stroll. It runs from Lake Brienz to Lake Thun, with flower gardens and parks on one side allowing for a view of the Bernese Alps. On the other side you’ll find high-end hotels, boutiques, cafes and the casino.

Day 11 Wilderswil Jungfraujoch Wilderswil

Contrasts of Switzerland (8 Days)

The tour guide picked people she liked and hung around them although she did not speak to everyone other than tour info. She walked very fast like she was in marathon and people had problems keeping up to her. She misleading and assumed things about people without speaking with them. She did not care about some people. At one point the group left us and we did know where they went. She also stuck in away from the others and spoke to rest of the people with her back to us; in other words segerated us from the others. I spoke to her and she quickly changed things so we could sit with others. I will be writing Trafalgar about this when time for me is available. However, Trafalgar should know about this. We consider her a poor tour guide and requires more training. She is assumtive with a poor attitude about people that are slower than others. She does not treat all with respect.

The itirenary is very good, it covers most of Geneva. The tour guide, Vitali is exceptional, he’s knowledgeable He goes to extra miles to make us stress free, comfortable & safe. He finds ways to open restaurant for us when its supposedly close (after 2pm),make table available when there was none. On our last day, he took us to this amazing & spectacular place for lunch. Last but not the least, I left my wallet/phone in one of the places we went to and he never hesitate to drive back 30 min. away and even knocking on doors(for it was past closing time. His dedication & love for his job is very commendable. Kudos to you Vitali. We appreciate all you did for us making our trip worthwhile & memorable. Thank you, Bella & Dong

It was an amazing tour. If you want a more personalized somewhat private tour, this is it! Our tour guide showed us a lot of exciting places, adjusted the tour despite the change in weather. I would recommend this to my family and friends.

The planning was great and easy to follow. We had great time. I do hope I could get the itinerary earlier so we can make additinal plan at each stop early on. And it would be great to have more transparency on the pricing also.

What people love about switzerland tours.

Had an amazing time in Switzerland and met new wonderful friends. Trafalgar did a great job. Everything was organized and safety was top priority. Will travel with Trafalgar again.
Vitalli was a wonderful tour guide and a pleasure to work with.
Good, but there was definitely a lack of information given to folk on the tour. As in what to wear, how strenuous it's going to be ... etc.

Here are the latest prices for a 3 night trip for 2 travelers: Top vacation $457; Family vacation $366; Romantic vacation $510; Luxury vacation $495; Budget vacation $302.

Why should you book a vacation package to Switzerland?

When should you book a vacation package to switzerland.

It all depends on what you'd like to do. If you're into skiing and want to save money, a package in February of March could work out just fine. If you're headed to Geneva or Zurich for a city break, May and June are great times to go, and the early fall is prime hiking season in most lower Alpine valleys.

Where should you stay in Switzerland during your vacation?

For any vacation type in switzerland:.

It doesn't matter whether you travel as a family, alone or as a couple, the Hotel Krebs in Interlaken will be ideal. It's well situated for skiing or summer hikes, while a range of bars and restaurants caters for evening entertainment. Airport shuttles from Zurich take around two hours.

For visitors to Geneva, nowhere beats the Beau Rivage. Blessed with a beautiful location overlooking the lake, it's a short walk from attractions like Saint-Pierre Cathedral and is well-equipped with amenities to enhance anyone's stay. Airport taxis take just 10-15 mins.

For family vacations in Switzerland:

Geneva's Grand Hotel Kempinski is among the city's elite family hotels, with a Sunday children's club taking the pressure off parents, a wellness spa and pool. And it's all around 15 mins from Geneva airport (or 25 mins by bus).

If you're arranging a family ski trip to Zermatt, the Grand Hotel Zermatthof will fit the bill. A classic continental ski lodge, it provides relaxing massages, has three restaurants, an indoor pool and staff who are experts at handling kids. The taxi from Geneva Airport takes about 4 hours.

For romantic vacations in Switzerland:

The Hotel d'Angleterre is a wonderful boutique hotel in Geneva where the rooms are furnished with little touches like bathrobes, extra-soft pillows and iPod docks - creating an intimate, romantic atmosphere. It's handily located in the city center, around 15 mins by taxi from the airport.

The Gstaad Palace is perfect for skiing escapes with the one you love. Located at the base of a stupendously beautiful valley, it has 5 restaurants, a pool and spa which specializes in aromatherapy sessions - ideal for recovering from a day on the slopes. The drive from Geneva takes 2 hours.

For luxury vacations in Switzerland:

Located in the upscale ski resort of St Moritz, the San Gian is everything luxury ski fans could hope for, offering hot stone massages and reflexology, while hooking guests up with secure ski storage and the all-important passes. Zurich airport is around 4 hours away by road.

Cresta Palace is a superb premium ski hotel in Celerina where the deep soaking tubs provide the perfect way to recover from a day on the slopes, and the dining options seem to go on and on. The closest airport is Milan Malpensa in Italy, which is 3 hours away by taxi or hire car.

For budget vacations in Switzerland:

If you're taking your family to Zurich, the Novotel Zurich Airport Messe is both cheap and extremely convenient - as well as being a comfortable, friendly hotel. It has a terrace bar, fitness center and sauna, and is 5 mins from the airport.

Budget travelers can explore the fascinating city of Geneva without paying a fortune by staying at the Hotel des Alpes, where free wi-fi and hearty buffet breakfasts ensure a contented stream of customers. And the 3 mile distance from the airport means that transfers are extremely quick.

Best time for travel discover switzerland, austria & bavaria.

While just about any month is great to visit Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria, there are a few prime times of the year for the Discover Switzerland, Austria & Bavaria tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Winter: This tour makes for a perfect winter adventure. You’ll encounter far fewer crowds, the crisp mountain air, and snow-covered peaks. Cozy up outside with a blanket and enjoy fondue as it was meant to be eaten!

Spring: Fairly mild weather and fewer crowds make spring a great time to visit these countries.

Summer: Summer is a beautiful time of year to experience the region’s natural beauty and outdoor activities, even as popular sites and attractions draw crowds. It can get quite hot in the summer, so keep in mind there are very few hotels with air conditioning in the region. If the heat bothers you, you may prefer visiting in the spring or fall.

Fall: Another wonderful time to visit is in fall. You may wish to choose a tour that aligns with Oktoberfest!

Today in Innsbruck, you have the choice between two activities. First you may choose to embark on a cultural tour to discover the city’s history and popular attractions, including Maria Theresien Strasse, the Hofburg, and the Golden Roof. Your other option is to embark on an architectural tour focusing on Innsbruck’s unique architectural structures, including its famous ski jump.

Enjoy 3 nights in Vienna, Austria’s capital city. Walk in the footsteps of the greatest composers and allow the soft melodies of classical music to lull you into a time gone by. See the city with a local guide, visiting popular sights by means of public transportation. You’ll also have a full day to yourself – giving you ample opportunities to explore the Hapsburg-era museums and grab a slice of famous Sachertorte.

  • Innsbruck - Vienna
  • Transfer to Vienna, the largest city in Austria. As the country’s capital, Vienna is home to age-old traditions and well-known heritage. It was the former center of the Habsburg Empire, as well as the home for historical figures such as Freud, Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss.
  • Start your morning on a city tour with a local guide. You’ll make your way through the city like the locals do – on public transportation – and stop to visit Vienna’s most popular sights. Visit the 12th-century St. Stephen's Cathedral, standing at nearly 450-feet tall and featuring an eye-catching mosaic roof. Enjoy time in the afternoon to explore on your own. Gather in the evening for a dinner and classical music concert, highlighting the works of Austrian-born Mozart and Strauss.
  • The day is yours. With your free time, consider visiting the legendary Schönbrunn Palace, former residence of the Habsburgs and containing more than 1,000 rooms. Or maybe you’ll spend the day exploring the museum at Belvedere Palace, home to Gustav Klimt’s famous painting The Kiss. Or you could even grab a slice of Sachertorte in a Viennese café. No matter how you spend your day, soak in the Austrian culture and experience the best of this capital city.
  • Vienna - Tour Ends
  • Your tour comes to a close today.

How better to spend a free day than visiting the romantic Alpine village of Seefeld. Beautifully situated at 3,600 feet above sea level, this charming Tyrolean town commands breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and countryside. Known as one of the world's greatest ski resorts, Seefeld offers a relaxed atmosphere in an Alpine setting with miles of trails for walking, lakes, fine shopping, dining possibilities and fresh, Alpine air. After arriving by train, enjoy a glass of schnapps and a traditional horse and buggy ride. While at the small country home, learn how to make your own apple strudel and indulge in the chance to sample one of Austria’s famous sweets!

Enjoy the splendor of pure nature while gliding over a clear landscape in panoramic gondolas and spectacular cable cars. Ascend Pilatus via a unique excursion on the steepest railway of the world with a gradient of 48%. Upon arrival at the top, soak in the magnificent Alpine view from 7,000 feet above sea level. During leisure time at the summit, stroll the walkway for views from a different vantage point, or enjoy Swiss culinary delights on your own in one of the various restaurants (lunch is not included). Return back down the mountain by panoramic gondola for yet another bird’s eye view.

Spend a day exploring Salzburg's historic past and charming old town.

Enjoy a walking tour of Lucerne's Altstadt (Old Town).

Delight in lunch at the 1,200-year-old St. Peter's Restaurant, Austria's oldest.

Glimpse into the cheese production of Gruyères and sample these dairy delights.

Winter calls for taking a trip to the slopes and dashing through the snow, just like Santa!  Head to Grindewald in the winter to explore all things snow. From ice sculptures to ice lollies; the streets of Grindelwald are filled with things made of ice till they all melt away. For the ultimate Swiss experience, head to Zurich and marvel at its traditional huts and cottages. Dotted with small, modest huts and daisies that dilly- dally, an ascending mountain spells Swiss charm as the sweet breeze sends you in a state of lull. Travel in the world’s first cable car and look down to marvel at the opulent Lake Lucerne that sparkles under the dancing rays of the sun. Stanserhorn is certainly a must visit while you are on your Switzerland tour. Gornergrat – This quaint hill station is dotted with coniferous forests, beautiful valleys and is home to the towering presence of the Matterhorn. Zermatt – If your definition of romance is being silent together as you marvel at the beauty of nature, Zermatt is the place to be. Devoid of pollution and unnecessary honking, Zermatt is in the heart of the Alps. This lavish village sits quiet and pretty and is surrounded by the highest peaks of Switzerland. Zermatt is charming, with its old-fashioned cabins and dancing alleys. Hence it does not come as a surprise that this luxurious village is one of the most sought-after honeymoon destinations in Switzerland.
