Often considered to be one of the finest acts to come from Manchester that didn’t contain a Gallagher, The Couteeners have become one the UK’s premier indie bands.

The 4 piece, fronted by Liam Fray, have had a strong bond since before the band was even formed, having known each other from the age of ten. After Liam played some well received acoustic sets during his (short-lived) university stint, he decided to pack his education in and form a band, initially recruiting Michel Campbell as drummer (even though he had never touched a drum kit) and rounding out the group with Daniel "Conan" Moores and Mark Joseph Cuppello.

The band quickly went from their first gig in October 2006 to their first chart appearance under a year later for their single ‘Cavorting’, their popularity being accelerated by word of mouth hype around Manchester.

The band was approached by Stephen Smith, a man who had previously produced with The Smiths and Morrissey making him the obvious producer choice for their first record which turned out to be 2008’s ‘St Jude’. The album reached number 4 in the charts, its success being driven by the anthemic single ‘Not Nineteen Forever’.

The continued success of follow up albums like ‘Falcon’, ‘Anna’ and ‘Concrete Love’ has made them a popular live act as well. They are a staple act at major festivals and have played everywhere from Glastonbury to Isle of White. They are still heroes in their hometown as well and have headlined the 16000 capacity Manchester Arena 3 times.

Live reviews

A party-hungry crowd packed into Wolverhampton Civic Hall on a wet and windy night for an evening of flares, crowd surfing and singalongs for a band so underistimated they had to upgrade from the Wulfrun Hall within hours of tickets going on sale earlier this year.

What a wise move it was.

Out of all of the bands who shot up in the aftermath of Arctic Monkeys rise to power all those years ago, The Courteeners have done the best job of making a name for themselves on their terms.

Starting off with Are You In Love With A Notion?, the tone was set for the night.

It wasn't just the lyrics that were shot back at frontman Liam Fray, each and every guitar line and drum beat was echoed tenfold.

The captivating frontman, a fireball of energy throughout, knows how to work a worked-up crowd and by sticking to the hits early on, he ensured anyone brave enough not to be onside from the get go was soon dragged on board.

Cavorting, Please Don't and Kings of the New Road combined to conjure up a nostalgic atmosphere that left nobody unsure of just what the band has always been about, the raw power of British rock and roll.

Newer material was sparse but Small Bones and How Good It Was made sure the evening didn't descend into a trip down memory lane.

The Courteeners have a certain appeal that is hard to put your finger on if you haven't been inducted into their world of lager laced anthems.

Half football match, half emotional love in, their gigs are never short on emotion or mayhem.

It is an overwhelming thing to be a part of.

Following cuts from Falcon such as Take Over The World and Sycophant and a pitch perfect acoustic section where Fray and his crowd truly became one, it was time for the big guns.

Not Nineteen Forever and What Took You So Long brought the curtain down, although it felt like only a few minutes had passed.

There isn't a bigger venue in Wolverhampton for them to play, although the Civic seems a perfect fit for their slightly anachronistic yet endlessly cool shows.

Fray and his compadres can rest assured that everyone who filled the venue last night will be back next time.

Having seen them perform at the back bar of the Civic Hall back in 2008, it's hard not to be proud of the evolution of a band who will never really change, probably for the better.

The Courteeners are adored locally and globally, having sold out the Manchester Arena in 2010 they have gone on to play massive outdoor shows such as Wigan’s Haigh Hall and Delamere Forest in 2011 and two sold out dates at Castlefield Bowl in 2013.

The Courteeners experience is never the same as the band also play many more intimate gigs on their tours across the UK at venues such as the O2 academies and even university unions. This scope of venue capacity is just the start of why the Courteeners are an addictive band. Their songs are anthemic and perfect for stadium shows but retain their intimacy through wonderfully crafted lyrics that anyone living in the UK can relate to especially those from the north.

There is no better tune to exemplify this than ‘The Opener’ taken from their second album Falcon. If you’re looking to get into this band, I couldn’t pinpoint one song or album to listen to, you need listen to all three albums as they show the progression of this incredible band.

From the first time I saw them in 2007 at O2 Apollo in Manchester I knew I’d fallen in love with their music and they haven’t disappointed the 6 or 7 times I have seen them since.

I’m a late comer in terms of being a fan of The Courteeners who have grown on me ‎over recent years rather than making an initial impact. Many of my favourite songs ‎of theirs are what you might not consider to be fan favourites so it was unsurprising ‎that seven plus did not make the set list. However to say I enjoyed every single song ‎immensely (and there were over 20 of them) for me tells you how good this band are ‎and I loved their attitude, performance and presence. ‎

The pre-gig atmosphere was great as Oasis’ ‘Morning Glory’ got the crowd going ‎before The Courteeners came on stage and opened up to the brilliant “Are you in ‎Love with Notion”. The set was then a great a blend of old favourites and songs ‎from their latest album. There was a great moment when frontman Liam Fray played ‎an acoustic set before the encore that closed rapturously with Acylic, Here Come ‎the Young Men, Not Nineteen Forever and What Took You So Long. ‎

Following Heaton Park, Leeds / Reading, an arena tour and Old Trafford ‎coming up – it is safe to say that The Courteeners are an established British ‎Heavyweight getting better and better. ‎

Having enjoyed their music over the years, a chance to see them at the relatively small venue of the LCR at the UEA (this band have done arena tours) seemed a good opportunity to 'get close'. I suppose many bands, having reached great heights, would play down such a venue but, happily, Courteeners did not. They brought an impressive back wall of lights, plus all the usual spots/vari-lights, coupled with a great sound and delivered an hour and a half of brilliant anthemic tunes, to which most of the enthusiastic audience sang, apart from 3 acoustic numbers Liam Fray did in the last half hour, setting the show up for a glorious finale. Liam held the audience in his hands for the 90 minutes, his co-band members playing bass, rhythm guitar and piano/keyboards in a calm, unobtrusive, and efficient manner, giving him even greater prominence in front of some great drumming. If you get a chance to see them, TAKE IT!

Been to many gigs and festivals and have never left a set early no matter what it is like. Last night had to leave the courteeners gig after less than 30 mins. The venue was overpacked and full of teenage boys looking for a fight. I enjoy a moshpit as much as the next person but this was not the usual fun moshing and dancing, but people trying to cause pain to eachother on purpose. My boyfriend tried to protect me from this and move me away but we could not get out due to the venue being over packed and everyone being squashed. Felt scared I was going to be crushed at many points, and also sustained a hard kick to the head! The sound was pretty bad too, with the singers voice being far to low volume against the guitar. Couldn't understand a word that he was singing, which is a shame as I love their recorded music.

Would not see the courteeners again, but would return to the venue to see a smaller band.

Beautiful venue. Great view from row 1 of the stalls. Good support from Blossoms who I saw a couple of times in 2017. Always fun

We were reminded why we were here but some amazing young people & then the main event. Liam & the boys ripped through the classic album St Jude in full. Aftershow started the set. Kymberly then Cavorting and the place was rocking. By the end of the night all had been covered. Liam did a solo acoustic stint which featured How Come & Yesterday, Today & Probably Tomorrow. Smattering of songs from their other albums completed the 23 song setlist. The place literally bounced when Not Nineteen Forever was played & a snippet of James’ Sometimes in What Took You So Long completed a stellar night.

Saw concert at Manchester arena and from the moment the band walked out the place was jumping! Played a real mix of crowd pleasers-The opener, Cavorting, Bide your time, Beautiful Head, Please don’t , Summer to name but a few( check out the full set list)Covered stuff from all albums including new stuff which actually worked well live. I loved the section with the strings and the acoustic section! They were on for quite a time and you absolutely got your money’s worth- they were fantastic! At the end not nineteen forever was played and I thought the roof of the arena would come off! Liam certainly knows how to get the crowd going and we were in fine voice for this gig! I’m looking forward to seeing them in 2020!

The courteeners were litttttt! Liam Fray is a legend. I was so petrified of going after being at the Ariana concert but seriously the atmosphere was amazing everyone was so welcoming and unified. The emotions running through the crowd we're overwhelming, the best place to be. Purely amazing, thank you.

Cracking night - band were on top form, opening night of the tour & would definitely recommend catching them - top band ! The audience reaction is always brilliant - I'm an older fan & prefer the seats but down on the floor the kids were having a ball - get yourself to see them!

Amazing as always! I was surprised at how many songs they played with it being a lesser known venue but definitely got our money's worth. Fantastic atmosphere and a great way to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of St Jude! Can't wait for the next gig in Manchester on April 7th.

Courteeners announce first US gigs in 13 years

The band are set to play Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles in November

Courteeners

Courteeners have announced a string of US tour dates for this November, marking the first time the band have played the US since Coachella in 2009.

The US tour kicks off at Boston’s Brighton Music Hall on November 10, with the band heading to New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles ahead of their recently announced Corona Capital Festival appearance in Mexico City on November 18.

Tickets for the tour go on sale at 10am local time in each city on June 17. Find tickets for the shows here and for the LA date, head here .

Courteeners’ latest studio album,  ‘More. Again. Forever.’ , came out in January 2020. In a four-star review,  NME  hailed it as the group’s “most focussed and adventurous work to date”.

“[Their sixth album] strikes a mature balance,” the review reads. “It’s escapist in its sound but humane in its approach to the world. It’s experimental but familiar, and tests what the band are capable of.”

Courteeners

Last year, Courteeners  shared their huge Heaton Park homecoming gig in its entirety online . The band premiered the concert in full on their official  YouTube channel on November 25, which saw them playing in front of 50,000 fans at the outdoor Manchester show on June 15, 2019.

Courteeners announce the 15th Anniversary reissue of their classic debut St. Jude on January 13, 2023 on Polydor across multiple formats and a massive hometown celebration gig on Friday, June 9, 2023 at Manchester’s Heaton Park.

St. Jude was originally released in April 2008. It reached No.4 in the UK Album Charts and quickly cemented the band’s position as one of the UK’s most beloved rock’ n’ roll bands, combining sharp wit, warmth, and irresistible melody to dazzling effect. The album would go on to win the inaugural Guardian First Album Award, beating debut records released in the same year by Adele, Noah and the Whale, F_k Buttons and Wild Beasts. It would also see the band embraced by legions of fans, at their own live shows and on festival bills everywhere.

Speaking about their debut, frontman Liam Fray commented, “They grow up so fast. Can’t believe our darling St. Jude is 15 next year. Think it’s time for a celebration and we all know that great things come in threes… The Star Wars Trilogy, Sooty, Sweep & Soo and now, here we are, with the third instalment of ‘Courteeners at Heaton Park’. June 2015. June 2019 and now June 2023… This time to celebrate the 15th anniversary of its release we’ll be playing ST. JUDE (in full) PLUS (of course) THE HITS. I can’t think of any better way to celebrate than to make the pilgrimage to Heaton Park with like-minded souls and lose ourselves like it’s 2008. And, because we’re good like that, we’ve remastered the original album. GOD BLESS THE BAND. GOD BLESS THE FANS. OMNE TRIUM PERFECTUM.”

Band in the USA: Courteeners unveil first stateside dates in 13 years

the courteeners tour 2022

You may not be 19 forever, but it could be 13 years since you saw one of your favorite bands play live in your city. That’s the case with Courteeners , the Manchester indie group who this week have announced their first live shows in the United States since 2009, when they played Coachella and toured with Morrissey (including a show here at House of Blues).

Liam Fray and the boys — armed with an arsenal of indie dance floor hits like “Not Nineteen Forever”; “You Overdid It Doll”; and “Are You In Love With a Notion?” — will play four stateside shows later this year, starting with a November 10 kickoff at Brighton Music Hall in Allston. From there, Courteeners take on New York City (November 12 at Bowery Ballroom); Philadelphia (November 13 at The Fillmore); and Los Angeles (November 16 at Troubadour).

It should be a fun run of intimate club dates for a band that plays to massive audiences in England, like a June 2019 hometown date at Heaton Park that sold 50,000 tickets in just a few hours. Courteeners last album was 2020’s More. Again. Forever. , and we hyped its lead single “Heavy Jacket” .

Tickets to the upcoming dates go on sale Friday (June 17) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster.com for the three eastern shows and seeticketsusa for the L.A. gig.

Liam Gallagher reveals son Gene’s band to open for him on Definitely Maybe anniversary tour

He revealed the news responding to a fan on social media – as you do!

Avatar photo

Liam Gallagher has said his son Gene and his band Villanelle will support him on his upcoming Definitely Maybe anniversary tour.

The indie-rocker took to X (formerly Twitter) to reply to a fan who said they like Gene’s band and asked what Liam thought of them.

In his response, Liam said he thinks the band are ‘good’ and announced they will be ‘first on’ for his Definitely Maybe tour.

the courteeners tour 2022

Gene, 22, is Liam’s youngest son and is the frontman and guitarist for the recently formed band Villanelle.

The band is set to hit the UK festival scene this summer, releasing their new music along the way, and will also be first up to support LG alongside the likes of music legends including Cast and The View.

Although the newbies haven’t officially released any tracks just yet, they have recently been spotted supporting Brummie band the Overpass on tour, and performed at King Tut’s in Glasgow on March 21st.

the courteeners tour 2022

Clips online hint that Gene will most likely take after his dad and go on to create some classic British indie-rock tunes.

Aside from the upcoming Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary tour, Liam has a big year and is currently touring with John Squire, formerly of the Stone Roses, to support their joint, self-titled album. The pair performed live at Manchester Apollo last month and reviews are looking pretty positive for these two rock legends.

Liam will be coming to Manchester’s brand-new Co-op Live arena on his Definitely Maybe 30th anniversary tour on June 15th and 16th, with a final Manchester date on June 27th.

It’s not clear which tour dates Gene will be supporting his dad on but we look forward to seeing him live.

Liam Gallagher says Noel ‘turned down’ reunion for Definitely Maybe tour

There’s no sign of them burying the hatchet yet

the courteeners tour 2022

Liam Gallagher claims he asked Noel to reunite for the Definitely Maybe 30th Anniversary tour later this year but that he ‘refused’.

The former Oasis frontman shared details of his upcoming tour – to celebrate 30 years of Oasis’ seminal 1994 album – back in October.

So, a solo Liam will play their iconic debut album in full, including tracks ‘Live Forever’, ‘Supersonic’, ‘Slide Away’ and ‘Cigarettes & Alcohol’.

The indie-rocker also teased he’ll be playing ‘naughty’ B-sides from the era.

the courteeners tour 2022

He’ll be kicking off the 12-date tour in Sheffield on June 2nd, heading to Cardiff for a night, then onto London for four, followed by three dates in his native Manchester at the Co-op Live arena .

From there, Liam will play two dates in Glasgow and two in Dublin, before heading back to Manchester for the finale.

Speaking to MOJO recently, Liam said that his brother refused to put aside their differences and join him on the 30th anniversary tour. He said: “Noel? He ain’t f**king doing it.”

“I did call him! Well, my people called Noel’s management team,” he told the publication.

the courteeners tour 2022

“We put an offer on the table for an Oasis thing – because we got offered it – and he said no. It was a big tour, a lot of money. He turned it down. I get it, he’s got a divorce going down. I’ll do the ‘Definitely Maybe’ thing and have a nice time without him.”

On whether next year could see the feuding pair finally make amends and reunite for t he anniversary of second album ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’, Liam said: “It’s down to the universe. It’ll happen when it happens, it’s not in our hands anymore.”

Either way, it seems Liam is up for the tour with or without him as he added: “Me, I love nostalgia though. I’m doing the lot. Every album, even… what was the last one?”

But are you going to give us the surprise that Noel is going to join the DM tour or not, Liam? 🤨 — 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯 (Makarov's version) ♡ (@sadtanasx) October 17, 2023

It’s not the first time Liam has claimed his estranged brother has turned down his offer to get back together.

Back in October, a fan asked whether he’d give us the surprise of joining him on the DM tour, to which Liam responded: “He’s been asked and he’s refused.”

It comes after Noel told talkSport radio back in May that he was ‘open to a phone call’ from Liam but said that he wouldn’t dare and accused him of being a ‘coward’.

He continued: “He doesn’t have to speak to me. He won’t speak to me, he’s a coward. So he should get some of his people, his agent, to call my people and say, ‘Look, this is what we’re thinking.’ And then we’ll have a conversation about it. Until then, he’s being a little bit disingenuous.”

He added that Liam is guilty of getting ‘people’s hopes up’ with his post on social media.

But Liam hit back with a string of posts on social media saying it wasn’t true and that Noel just ‘hates Oasis fans’.

The band parted ways in 2009 and ever since, the bickering brothers have exchanged spats publicly while being asked about whether a reunion may be on the cards one day.

Regarding the 30th Anniversary of Definitely Maybe, Noel confirmed in April last year that an Oasis reunion would not be happening any time soon but did confirm plans of a reissue of the record to mark the occasion.

The singer-songwriter also added that there had ‘never really been a serious offer about ‘The Big O’ getting back together’.

Earlier this year, as he reflected on their split, Liam accused Noel of throwing him ‘under the f**king bus’ at the time.

Liam is now focusing his attention on his much anticipated collaborative, self-titled album with Stone Roses guitarist John Squires, which is out on March 1st. The pair will also announce details of an upcoming tour.

Wigan Casino to celebrate 50th anniversary with Northern Soul all-nighter

The rarest Northern Soul record was recently sold for £100k

the courteeners tour 2022

The legendary Wigan Casino will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a special Northern Soul all-nighter after its last song, Frank Wilson’s ‘Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), played in 1981 and it shut its doors for good.

The all-nighter will play on BBC Radio 6 Music, featuring all the – often B-side – bangers discovered in Motown vaults from the likes of The Supremes, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Dobie Gray, Yvonne Baker, and many more.

From its opening in 1973, Wigan Casino saw crowds of music lovers desperate to dance the night away to all of the latest vinyl records, getting dropped off by the coach load outside the venue – the former Empress Ballroom.

the courteeners tour 2022

Several DJs including Russ Winstanley, Ian Fishwick, Kev Roberts and Richard Searling would take turns in spinning the decks for clubbers who would queue for hours just to get a taste of the action in the main dance hall.

Wigan Casino’s very last all-nighter was played on December 6th 1981 from midnight to the early morning, played by DJ Russ Winstanley.

Now, 50 years after the legendary night began, a special edition of Northern Soul programming dedicated to Wigan Casino will kick off on Saturday September 9th until 8pm on Sunday September 10th, on BBC Radio 6 Music.

the courteeners tour 2022

The tracks will be played across The Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show alongside a broadcast of Stuart Maconie’s Northern Soul Prom, which was recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in July.

Kicking off the programme on Saturday, from 6pm to 9pm, Craig’s show will feature a ten-piece soul house band – The Signatures – and special guests including Wigan Casino DJ Richard Searling and R&B group The Flirtations.

Craig will also be going in search of the rarest Northern Soul record, which was recently sold for £100,000 – can you guess which one it was?

the courteeners tour 2022

Then, from 9pm-12am, Craig will join Stuart to introduce a broadcast of the Northern Soul Prom – recorded with the BBC Concert Orchestra.

It features Brendan Reilly, Darrell Smith, Frida Mariama Touray, Natalie Palmer, Nick Shirm and Vula Malinga as they perform the likes of You’re Gonna Make Me Love You, Open the Door to Your Heart and Hold Back The Night.

Stuart Maconie says: “Northern Soul was and is one of the most thrilling and vital music subcultures ever.

the courteeners tour 2022

“It’s a dynamic, sympathetic union of the sounds and dreams of generations in the industrial heartlands of the North and Midlands of the UK and their counterparts in New York, Detroit, Philadelphia and beyond.

“At the heart of the scene is this wonderful, dramatic, vibrant and inspirational music, as well as the passion and knowledge of its devotees.

“They brought the communal rapture of the Northern Soul clubs and dancehalls to the Royal Albert Hall, which was on its feet on every tier for the Prom. It was a night the like of which that grand and esteemed old building has never seen before.”

the courteeners tour 2022

From 12am-4am, 6 Music begins an audio tour of the UK’s iconic all-nighter venues, with hour-long playlists by DJs who were there at Golden Torch (12am-1am), Wigan Casino (1am-2am), Twisted Wheel (2am-3am) and 100 Club (3am-4am).

These key figures from the scene share stories and songs, taking listeners back to the dance floors of these legendary spaces.

From 4am-7am, 6 Music’s Morning After Mix, Northern Soul Special, brings listeners a playlist of mellow soul numbers, featuring classic ballads and as well as contemporary selections.

the courteeners tour 2022

Stuart returns to the airwaves an hour earlier than usual at 7am on Sunday morning (September 10th) to present Lights On With Stuart Maconie.

He’ll bring the party to a close and bring listeners the original versions of Wigan Casino’s famous Three Before Eight – Time Will Pass You By by Tobi Legend, Long After Tonight Is All Over by Jimmy Radcliffe and I’m On My Way by Dean Parrish.

The Wigan Casino 50th anniversary special on BBC Radio 6 Music can be listened to via BBC Sounds from 6pm on September 9th – 8pm on September 10th. You can also tune in via DAB Digital Radio, Freeview, Sky TV, and supported mobile devices.

About the Artist

One of the most successful UK bands of the last 15 years, Courteeners are an English guitar group - Liam Fray, Michael Campbell & Daniel Moores - formed in Manchester in 2006.

Lauded by Q Magazine as one of “the world’s biggest underground acts”, all of their albums have gone Top 10 – 2008’s St. Jude (No.1), 2010’s Falcon (No.6), 2013’s ANNA (No.6), 2014’s Concrete Love (No.3), 2016’s Mapping the Rendezvous (No.3), 2018’s St. Jude - Re:Wired (No.5) and 2020’s More. Again. Forever (No.2).

In 2023, their lauded album St. Jude reached Number 1 for the very first time with its 15th anniversary edition and became the album with the longest time between release and charting at Number 1 in UK chart history, according to the Official Charts Company. The band played their third sell out 50,000 capacity headline show at Heaton Park in June to celebrate the anniversary of the album.

Courteeners have cemented their place as one of the country’s biggest and best-loved bands. And the reason? Well, that’s when we need to turn our attention to the band’s singer and songwriter Liam James Fray. A riot of contradictions–romantic, sensitive, brash, self-doubting & opinionated – it’s his songwriting, an acute observation of how life is mostly lived, that has fuelled the band’s longevity, striking a resounding chord with an increasing large bandwidth of young people across the country.
