The Williche

The archipelago of Chiloé is composed of one large island and several smaller islands and islets. The Pacific Ocean surrounds and carves out this particular geography, creating beaches, pensinsulas, fjords, marshes and bays, leading to a healthy biodiversity for a diverse range of animals, especially migratory birds. Traversing both land and sea with a guide is a fantastic opportunity to understand this ecosystem and vibrant habitat.

Sailing is a part of daily life for the locals of Chiloé. Tierra Chiloé’s wooden yacht, the locally-built and much loved ‘Williche’, allows guests to appreciate the archipelago from the water and travel like a local, making the voyage to and from excursions just as memorable as the destination. Delicious food is prepared and served onboard, including sea urchins and premium Chilean oysters, freshly shucked.

Tierra Patagonia

tierra patagonia excursions

Located within Torres del Paine National Park, along the shore of Lake Sarmiento, and overlooking the mountains, Tierra Patagonia is a peaceful retreat nestled into a wild and untamed part of the world. This ecotourism lodge features 40 rooms and is dedicated to connecting guests to nature while also preserving the unique environment of Patagonia.

Life at the Tierra Patagonia Lodge

Inside Tierra Patagonia, warm lighting, white-washed walls, and softwood tones set the stage for casual luxury. Plush sheepskin rugs, handmade blankets, and local crafts create a welcoming, homey scene within each of the three room categories and pay respect to the region’s culture and history. However, nothing, including the deep-soak bathtubs, will distract you from the mountain and lake views that form the centerpiece of every space within the lodge.

Your room might seem like the ideal spot to relax until you experience the lodge’s spa. The Uma Spa at Tierra Patagonia features an indoor heated pool, with hydro-massage jets, encased in glass walls that let you soak in the scenery in ultimate comfort. The spa also houses an outdoor hot tub, steam room, yoga studio and treatment rooms where a wide range of massages, facials, and scrubs promote wellbeing. After a day of indulgent relaxation or exhilarating adventures, sit down to a delicious meal crafted from locally sourced ingredients.

The lodge’s chef puts a modern, contemporary twist on traditional Chilean cuisine. After your meal, take a seat at the circular bar and order Patagonian beer, a glass of Chilean wine, or the bar’s signature cocktail, a Calafate Sour. Similar to a Pisco Sour, this drink combines pisco with lemon juice, egg whites, and the juice of local Calafate berries. Legend says that whoever eats the blue-black berries is sure to return to Patagonia, so this tasty drink is a must-have.

Excursions from the Hotel Tierra Patagonia, Torres del Paine

Picture yourself trekking across a hanging bridge towards the ice floes of Grey Glacier. If you want a less intense experience, perhaps you would prefer to take a catamaran sail across Gray Lake. Maybe you dream of spending a day birdwatching in hopes of seeing the 120 species, including Magellanic woodpeckers and condors, that call the region home. Is a downhill bike ride through the Laguna Azul area, with llama-like guanacos for company, more your style?

However you prefer to explore Patagonia, and whatever your fitness level, the guides at Tierra Patagonia will help you create a bespoke itinerary. With a wide range of activities, including kayaking, horseback riding, hiking, fly fishing, and scenic voyages, available, there is something to suit every traveler.

Architecture at Tierra Patagonia

In Patagonia, the wind rarely ceases to blow. The constant breeze inspired Tierra Patagonia architect, Cazu Zegers, to create a building that appears to have been carved out of the earth by the wind. Zegers, who was the first female architect awarded the Great Latin America Architecture Prize, used stone embankments to anchor the hotel to the ground.

Above, washed lenga wood panels have a silvery color that appears as if the material was corroded by water. The result is a building that is so well immersed in the landscape it practically disappears. Whether you come to Tierra Patagonia to be surrounded by wilderness while enjoying the comfort of a luxury hotel, to ride horses on a ranch with local gauchos, or to feast on traditional asado barbeque, your time in Patagonia will be the memory of a lifetime.

itinerary map

Today is a sample itinerary that includes a selection of the explorations on offer at Tierra Patagonia. This day is completely customizable.

PM : Arrive at the hotel around 4:00 PM local time, and be greeted with a welcome cocktail and friendly smiles from our staff.  You’ll sit down with one of our expert guides who will give you an introduction to the Torres del Paine National Park geography and help create your excursion itinerary for the next few days.

Afterwards, take a walk through our backyard down to the shore of Lake Sarmiento to stretch your legs after the ride in from Punta Arenas, or cozy up by the fireplace with a glass of Chilean Carmenere before making your way to the dining room for a gourmet 3-course meal.

Tierra Patagonia's 5-Day All Inclusive Program Day One - Arrival to the lodge.

Hunters Trail & Laguna Azul

AM : After a nourishing breakfast and watching the colors of the sunrise reflect on the Paine Massif, we’ll take a 30 minute drive to the Portería Lago Sarmiento.  This beginner-level trek starts gradually, winding its way northwards, with the Paine Massif as a constant companion. Half way through we will visit a rocky area where there are cave paintings from the Aonikenk, hunter-gatherer native Indians that occupied this area some 6,000 years ago. It is also one of the best areas to see wildlife such as guanacos, foxes and condors. The hike ends a few meters away from Portería Laguna Amarga where the van is waiting to drive us back to the hotel.

PM : After lunch, we’ll depart to the Laguna Azul area and enjoy spectacular views of the North, Central and South Towers, weather permitting. We enjoy a short walk along the north shore of the lake and in springtime and summer see many birds in the lenga woods. We drive on to see the Paine Waterfall and Laguna Amarga, with beautiful views of the local area.

Tierra Patagonia's 5-Day All Inclusive Program Day Two - Trail & Blue Lagoon.

Paine Massif & Sailing to Grey Glacier

Today is a sample itinerary that includes a selection of the explorations on offer at Tierra Patagonia. This day is completely customizable. The mentioned excursion comes at an additional cost.

AM : This is a scenic trip which concentrates on the west side of the Torres del Paine National Park. It is the best option to see a large part of the park in just one day, with stops at various places for taking great photographs.

The road ends at Lake Grey, where we embark on the Grey II, sailing towards the Grey Glacier. We will see glaciers, ice floes and feathery nothofagus woods. If we are lucky, we may see a huemul, a native deer in danger of extinction. We return to the hotel by van.

PM : Take the afternoon to relax in one of our saunas or the indoor heated pool at our Uma Spa, keeping an eye out for guanacos, rheas and armadillos that may cross right in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows.

Tierra Patagonia's 5-Day All Inclusive Program Day Three - Grey Glacier.

Estancia Lazo

AM : From the hotel we head south towards Estancia Lazo. The road is scenic and with great views of Lake Sarmiento. The ride starts near the Hostería Lazo and winds through an ancient lenga forest. After about an hour, we reach a clearing with wonderful views of the Paine Massif. We head back through the wood to the Hostería, with a local gaucho always by our side.

PM : Back at the hotel in the afternoon, be sure to schedule a relaxing massage or treatment at Uma Spa using our locally-made, all-natural products.

Tierra Patagonia's 5-Day All Inclusive Program Day Four - Forest.

AM : On your final day with us, take advantage of a complimentary morning yoga class in our studio enclosed by glass walls so you can feel fully connected with Patagonia. Enjoy a nice breakfast in our dining room while soaking in the last views of the Torres del Paine before departing back home.

Tierra Patagonia's 5-Day All Inclusive Program Day Five - Departure.

7 Day - All Inclusive Program

itinerary map

Arrival & Half-day Hike in Torres del Paine

PM : After arriving at Tierra Patagonia early in the afternoon, there’s no better way to settle in than by enjoying a delicious lunch in our dining room, looking out over the silhouette of Torres del Paine. Upon your arrival, our guides will chat through all of your tastes and preferences when it comes to outdoor activities, together coming up with that perfect excursion plan for your Patagonia adventure over the next few days.

You might want to get started straight away, in which case a half-day tour is just the ticket; such as an off-the-beaten path hike to a nearby panoramic lookout point, with the chance to see Condors swooping overhead while there.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day One - Dinner service.

Hunter’s Trail & Exploring the Aonikenk Culture

AM : Any early taste of adventure in Torres del Paine will no doubt leave you wanting more, and today there’ll be plenty in store with two half-day activities offering the chance to delve deep into Chilean Patagonia.

After breakfast, head out to embark on the Hunter’s Trail, witnessing remnants of Aonikenk culture through cave paintings splayed on the rock walls. The Aonikenk were native people of this land, hunter-gatherer nomads who used the rocks as a canvas for conveying messages to one another, which we can still see to this day.

The Paine Massif accompanies you throughout this walk, its striking silhouette dominating the background, and there’s also a chance to spot wildlife, including Guanacos, Foxes and Condors, so be sure to keep an eye out while here.

PM : As for the afternoon? Choose between another half-day excursion or time out in the Uma Spa, where you can line yourself up with a relaxing therapy or two, simply allowing any stresses to melt away.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day Two - Spa facilities.

Base of the Towers Hike, or Scenic Journey through Torres del Paine

Option 1: AM - PM: Keen hikers will need to fuel up well this morning, ahead of a full-day trek; Base of the Three Towers. Lasting approximately eight hours in total, the trails themselves are as rewarding as the eventual endpoint, standing at the foot of Las Tres Torres, or the ‘Three Towers’; the perfect place to stop for a picnic lunch and relish this astounding view.

These granite centurions have stood watch over this part of Patagonia for millennia, attracting plenty of outdoor explorers and keen mountaineers in the process. Upon returning to the hotel, a celebratory drink at the bar is in order; as is a well-deserved meal in our restaurant!

Option 2: AM - PM: An alternative for this full-day hike could be a scenic tour by road to some of the national park’s best lookout points; all in one day. There’s no doubt you’ll be amazed by the sharp, unforgiving outline of the Paine Massif’s distinctive ‘horns’, the star of the show here in Patagonia and just as jaw-dropping up close as you would imagine. Be sure to have your camera to hand, as you won’t want to miss a single snapshot of this amazing place.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day Three - Viewpoint.

French Valley

AM : Start off your morning with a complimentary yoga class before breakfast to gently wake up your muscles and prepare for the day.  You’ll tick off another leg of the famous W Trail today with a hike through the beautiful French Valley.  This excursion starts with a 30 minute boat ride across Pehoé Lake.  You’ll walk along a winding trail that passes the slopes of Paine Grande and the shores of Lago Skottsberg, with breathtaking views of the Cuernos del Paine along the way.  Upon reaching the Italian Camp, you will cross a bridge over the French River and head up the French Valley to the view point that sits below the French Glacier.

PM : After taking a break for lunch and photos, you’ll head back to the hotel where we suggest capping off the day in the outdoor Jacuzzi with a glass of perfectly-chilled Chilean chardonnay.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day Four - Hiking over a bridge.

Horseback Riding through Patagonia

AM - PM: For something a bit different today, why not go for a horseback tour? Our rides in Patagonia allow guests see Patagonia in a way that is both spiritual and respectful to nature.

The rides are led by authentic Gauchos – Patagonian cowboys – who not only know the land inside out, but also the horses, which have been raised in this unspoilt place and are trained for both beginners and experts.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day Five - Horseback Riding.

Sailing to the Grey Glacier & Touring the Paine Massif

AM : This excursion takes you through the Torres del Paine National Park to the western area, with a full overview of the main sites of interest. You’ll be amazed by the monolithic, unforgiving outline of the Paine Massif’s distinctive ‘horns’, just as jaw-dropping up close as you would imagine.

Afterwards, we’ll pass through Nothofagus woodland to reach the beach on Grey Lake, where you can spot large ice floes floating in the water. Here we board the catamaran and sail out towards the Grey Glacier, surrounded by the impassive peaks of the Paine mountain range. You’ll be awestruck by the 19 kilometer-long ice formation, and even more amazed to find that there is an island in the middle of the glacier! We will return to the hotel by van.

PM : Take the rest of the afternoon to relax at the bar and enjoy a glass of Chilean wine or a signature drink designed by our bartender.

Tierra Patagonia's 7-Day All Inclusive Program Day Six - Sailing to a Glacier.

Final Hike & Departure

AM : On your final day, one last outdoor activity can be enjoyed in our backyard at Lake Sarmiento, where you’ll be joined by the mountains of the Paine Massif and Sierra Baguales.

Low-lying vegetation ensures the route is nice and easy, leaving time to focus not on unnecessary strenuous exertion but instead on the surrounding majesty and abundant wildlife to be found here, with sightings of Eagles, Foxes, Rheas and Condors commonplace throughout the route.

Cycling Adventures in Patagonia, Atacama & Chiloé

Two-wheeled excursions are a great way to get to know new places and experience local life and nature up close. On this World Bicycle Day, we invite you to daydream about stunning, diverse landscapes that you can explore with us at Tierra Hotels.

Those of us who ride a bike know that every trip is an adventure. Even everyday routes, such as going to work or shopping, take on their own narrative. And these are almost always good stories, even more so when we’ve ridden through nature.

Imagine traveling on two wheels, at your own pace, along the impressive trails of Death Valley in the Atacama Desert and taking in huge volcanoes and an endless number of hills on the horizon; or get carried away by the wind of Patagonia, in the middle of the pampas, in the company of dozens of guanacos and other animals; or take a deep breath as you pedal between the Pacific Ocean and the green forests of Chiloé Island. All this is possible with the excursions we have prepared at Tierra Hotels.

Guides have identified special routes for each destination that are perfect for cycling, enjoying the incredible scenery and experiencing nature and local life. Keep in mind that this quiet means of transportation is a great way to happen upon diverse wildlife in its purest form.

Image-1-300620

At Tierra Atacama , you can cycle through the Quebrada del Diablo with incredible views of the most arid desert in the world or visit the Céjar Lagoon, in the Salar de Atacama, where, as in the Dead Sea, you can float in the water.

At Tierra Chiloé , guests can ride on nearby trails and experience their great biodiversity of native flora and fauna. There are several different paths, each with a different level of difficulty, so guides can help you choose the best one for your adventure.

Image-2-300620

At Tierra Patagonia , bike rides allow you to interact with the southern tip of the world’s unique wilderness. Pampa, lenga forests, animals, a lot of wind and, of course, the Torres del Paine, will accompany you throughout your tour.

The bicycle is a great choice for an adventure companion and is featured on our excursions list. This list has been prepared with dedication and love by Tierra Hotels’ team of experts to create unforgettable memories for all our guests. Celebrate World Bike Day by planning your next adventure with us!

Spend 5 days exploring the most remote corners of Earth on this 5-day Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise. Tierra del Fuego, or Land of Fire in Spanish, is an archipelago off the southernmost tip of South America and is divided btween Chile and Argentina. Begin this Patagonia cruise in Punta Arenas, Chile, sail the Straight of Magellan into a labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonia and end in Ushuaia, Argentina.

Gaze at the snowcapped peaks of Karukinka Natural Park in Admiralty Sound, as well as the deep fjords and broad bays of Alberto de Agostini National Park. At Ainsworth Bay, spot birdlife, elephant seals and beavers before hiking through the pristine sub-polar forest or along the crest of a glacial moraine. At Tuckers Islets, depending on the season, view Magellanic penguins up close from a Zodiac, as well as other bird species that frequent the area like king cormorants, oystercatchers, Chilean skuas, kelp geese, dolphin gulls, eagles and even the occasional Andean condor. The Pia Glacier is one of the most spectacular glaciers, which extends from the mountaintops to the sea, and Glacier Alley features some of the most impressive tidewater glaciers flowing from the Darwin Mountains and Darwin Ice Sheet.

At Cape Horn National Park, which overlooks the Drake Passage and is often called the “End of the Earth,” there is a lighthouse where a lightkeeper and his family live. In Wulaia Bay, the human history is as fascinating as the environment and three different hiking options explore the enchanting Magellan forest that overlooks the bay. Mail a postcard in the wooden mail barrel inside the small museum before returning to the ship to sail to Ushuaia, Argentina, where the journey ends.

The Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise is aboard the 210-guest Stella Australis or Ventus Australis , two modern expedition cruise ships operating with the latest navigation and safety technologies and environmentally conscious systems of separating and depositing waste in port. A professional expedition team leads small groups on nature walks, Zodiac tours and offer onboard lectures that make every moment of this Patagonia small ship cruise a memorable adventure.

The 5-day Fjords of Tierra del Fuego cruise can be combined with the 5-day Patagonian Explorer cruise to create a round-trip 9-day/8-night itinerary.

Fjords of Tierra del Fuego - Punta Arenas to Ushuaia Itinerary

The 5-day Fjords of Tierra del Fuego – Punta Arenas to Ushuaia cruise operates from Punta Arenas, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina, visiting inlets and glaciers while traveling as far south as Cape Horn.

tierra patagonia excursions

Check in at 1398 Costanera del Estrecho Ave in Punta Arenas between 1:00 and 5:00pm on the day of departure. Board the vessel between 6:00 and 7:00pm. After a welcoming toast and introduction of captain and crew, the ship departs for one of the remotest corners of planet Earth. During the night, cross the Strait of Magellan and enter the labyrinth of channels that define the southern extreme of Patagonia. The twinkling lights of Punta Arenas gradually fade into the distance as the ship enters the Whiteside Canal between Darwin Island and Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego.

Stella Australis, Ventus Australis

By dawn, the ship is sailing up Admiralty Sound (Seno Almirantazgo), a spectacular offshoot of the Strait of Magellan that stretches nearly halfway across Tierra del Fuego. The snowcapped peaks of Karukinka Natural Park stretch along the north side of the sound while the south shore is defined by the deep fjords and broad bays of Alberto de Agostini National Park. Venture ashore at Ainsworth Bay, which harbors copious bird life and a colony of southern elephant seals that can sometimes be spotted from the Zodiacs. Two guided excursions are available: one is along the edge of a stream, peat bog and beaver habitat to a waterfall-and-moss-covered rock face tucked deep inside a pristine sub-polar forest; the other is a more strenuous hike along the crest of a glacial moraine. Both afford views of Marinelli Glacier and the Darwin Mountains.

Leaving Ainsworth Bay behind, sail west along the sound to the Tuckers Islets. After lunch, board the Zodiacs again for a close-up view of the Magellan penguins that inhabit the tiny islands. More than 4,000 penguins use Tuckers as a place to nest, give birth and nurture their chicks. Many other bird species also frequent the area including king cormorants, oystercatchers, Chilean skuas, kelp geese, dolphin gulls, eagles and even the occasional Andean condor. In September and April, when the penguins live elsewhere, this excursion is replaced by a short walk to a glacier at nearby stunning Brookes Bay.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Sail overnight around the western end of Tierra del Fuego via the very narrow Gabrial Channel, Magdalena Channel and Cockburn Channel. After rounding the remote Brecknock Peninsula, cruise eastward and enter the Beagle Channel again. By morning, enter Pia Fjord and board the Zodiacs for a Pia Glacier tour. Take a short hike for a panoramic view of the spectacular glacier that extends from the mountaintops down to the sea or a longer, much more difficult walk up a lateral moraine of the old Pia Glacier.

No one knows for certain how the hulking mass of snow and ice got its feminine moniker, but one theory suggests it was named for Princess Maria Pia of Savoy (1847-1911), daughter of the Italian king. Back on board the ship, continue east along the Beagle Channel through an area called Glacier Alley. Living up to its name, the passage features a number of impressive tidewater glaciers flowing down from the Darwin Mountains and Darwin Ice Sheet on the north shore. Most of them are named after European countries: Holland, Italy, Germany, Spain and France.

During the early morning, navigate the narrow Murray Channel between Navarino and Hoste islands and drop anchor at historic Wulaia Bay, one of the few places in the archipelago where the human history is just as compelling as the natural environment. Originally the site of one of the region’s largest Yámana aboriginal settlements, the bay was described by Charles Darwin and sketched by Captain FitzRoy in the 1830s during their voyages on the HMS Beagle. This area is renowned for its mesmerizing beauty and dramatic geography. After a visit to the Australis-sponsored museum in the old radio station, which is especially strong on the Yámana people and European missionaries in the area, choose between three hikes of increasing degrees of difficulty that ascend the heavily wooden mountain behind the bay. On all tree, stroll through an enchanted Magellan forest of lengas, coigües, canelos, ferns and other endemic fauna to reach a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the bay. Before leaving Wulaia Bay, drop something into the wooden mail barrel inside the museum–letters or postcards meant to be hand delivered by future travelers–an ancient mariner tradition revived by Australis.

In the afternoon, cruise across Nassau Bay into the remote archipelago that includes Cape Horn National Park. Weather and sea conditions permitting, venture ashore on the windswept island that harbors legendary Cape Horn (Cabo de Hornos). Discovered in 1616 by a Dutch maritime expedition and named after the town of Hoorn in West Friesland, Cape Horn is a sheer 1,394-foot high rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. For many years it was the only navigation route between the Pacific and Atlantic and was often referred to as the “End of the Earth.” The park was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2005. The Chilean navy maintains a permanent lighthouse on the island, staffed by a lightkeeper and his family, as well as the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and modern Cape Horn Monument.

The following morning, sail into Argentine waters and dock in Ushuaia, Argentina, the world’s southernmost city. Arrival is scheduled for 8:30am or 9:30am, according to the date of departure. Take advantage of the early departure to visit the city and national parks, or continue your trip through Patagonia.

Accommodations Review

Nice clean cabin. Comfy bed. Other facilities in tip top shape.

Meals Review

Mostly good, some very good. They did a good job feeding 190 people, but some dishes were not the best. Would have been nice to have more fresh veggies. Also, breakfast was the same (runny scrambled eggs) every day. Some more variety, like hard boiled eggs or omelettes would have been nice. Service was terrific.

Crew & Guides Review

All were top notch. Great knowledge, friendly and extremely helpful. We can mention those we met: Juanita, Chris, Monica, and expedition leader Mauricio. All were great.

5 interesting day excursions from Moscow

Sergeyev Posad.

Sergeyev Posad.

To get a glimpse of Russia’s vastness and diversity, you don’t have to travel all the way to Siberia. A few places are easily accessible for day trips from Moscow

Sergeyev Posad

Located 70 km (43 miles) northeast of Moscow, the town of Sergeyev Posad is home to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, the most important Russian Orthodox monastery in the country.

Few places in the country demonstrate the architectural journey that Russian churches undertook from the 14 th century to the present day. St. Sergius of Radonezh, a venerated Russian saint, founded the monastery in 1345. Numerous structures were built in the compound in the subsequent centuries.

Trains leave every 30 minutes for Sergeyev Posad from Moscow’s Yaroslavskiy Railway Station. You can also take Bus Number 388 from the VDNKh metro station.

A pilgrimage spot for fans of Anton Chekhov , Melikhovo, 74 km (46 miles) from Moscow, is the former estate of the great playwright.

Chekhov moved to the estate in 1892 from Moscow and lived there till 1899. This is where he wrote classics such as The Seagull and his famous trilogy: The Man in a Case, About Love, and Gooseberries.

“My estate’s not much, but the surroundings are magnificent,” Chekhov wrote about Melikhovo.  The estate has been converted into a museum where the main house has preserved the 19 th century ambience. You can visit Chekhov’s study as well as the cottage where he wrote The Seagull.

Each May the estate hosts a weeklong theatre festival.

Suburban trains (elechtrichkas) run regularly from Moscow’s Kursky Railway Station to the town of Chekhov. From Chekhov take bus number 25 to the estate.

Nobody would ever visit the otherwise nondescript town of Monino, 33 km (20.5 miles) east of Moscow, if it didn’t have one of the world’s greatest open-air aviation museums.

The Central Air Force Museum, which is in Monino’s airfield, has 173 Russian aircraft and over 100 aircraft engines. The facility was an airbase from 1932 to 1956, when it was converted into a museum.

Along with aircraft from the Second World War, the Mi-12 Homer double rotor helicopter and the Bartini Beriev VVA-14 amphibious aircraft, the museum also has exhibits related to military aviation history such as the uniform of captured U2 pilot Gary Powers.

There’s no better way to learn about the history of Russian military aviation than taking a guided tour conducted by ex-pilots. Media reports indicate that the museum will be closed to the public from July 2016, so make a dash for it, if you’re a military aviation enthusiast.

Suburban trains (elechtrichkas) leave regularly for Monino from the Yaroslavskiy Railway Station.  The airfield is surrounded by defense installations and is not a walking distance from the station. Take a taxi from the station to avoid bus routes that pass through military areas.

You can also take bus number 322 to Monino from the Partizanskaya Metro Station.

The historic city, which is at the confluence of the Volga and Kotorosi rivers, is about 250 km (155 miles) northeast of Moscow. A part of the Golden Ring , the historic city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city center, which is compact and can easily be explored by foot, has around 140 protected monuments. The riverfront houses several old and famous monasteries.

The Spaso-Preobrazhensky Monastery, which is believed to have been founded in the 12 th century, is one of the city’s most well preserved religious complexes. Visitors are allowed to enter the 32-meter high bell tower, which was built in the mid-16 th century. The views are absolutely stunning from the top.

There are several nice cafes with views of the river in the city center.

Long-distance trains depart regularly for Yaroslavl from the Yaroslavskiy Railway Station.  It is a four-hour journey on most trains, although there is one fast service.

For a daytrip, you should ideally take a train from the capital at 7:35 am (reaches Yaroslavl at 10:51) and take one back at 7:32 pm (reaches Moscow at 10:53 pm).

If a find a journey to Yaroslavl too tiring for a day trip, a good alternative is the Tver , which is 162 km (100 miles) north of Moscow.

The city, which is at the confluence of the Tvertsa and Volga rivers, was founded in 1135.  Most of the ancient buildings were destroyed by a fire in 1763, after which it was redesigned for Empress Catherine the Great as a “road palace” to rest on the journey between Moscow and St. Petersburg.

The riverfront has a nice collection of 18 th and 19 th century building and churches. The city center is also compact and can easily be explored by foot.

One of the most popular gathering places in the city is the square housing the statue to Afanasy Nikitin, one of Tver’s greatest sons.  Nikitin, a 15 th century merchant was one of the first Europeans to travel to and document his visit to India.

Another popular hangout is the embankment from where you can see the Starovolzhsky Bridge.

Trains regularly depart for Tver from the Leningradskiy Station. The faster trains take a little over an hour to get to Tver.

And thanks to Yulia, we are able to work with professional and accredited guides in those languages. But as Irina is doing her job far to well, you can be lost in our different offers. So here is a list of my favorites!

Bolshoi’s backstages (Moscow)

My favourite is definitely the Bolshoi’s backstages. First because it’s a privilege of accessing it, and I like being the special and privileged person. Second, because it’s beautiful and for once you have time to admire the splendorous painting and goldish chandeliers. Third, because you can enter the Bolshoi for a much lesser price than the one of a ballet ticket in the historic stage! This is a must do!

The Hermitage (St-Petersburg)

Because, I mean… THE Hermitage! Who never dreamt of visiting this marvelous imperial palace and dive into both History and fine art at the same time? Who never dreamt of being an heir of the Romanov finding its way through the palace? The Hermitage is a real historical pearl waiting for you on the Neva’s docks (tips: always look through the windows while visiting the museum, it worths it). But the Hermitage is also and above all the most important museum in the world. In other words, thanks to your guide, you’ll have detailed informations on both world-known masterpieces and the imperial Russia’s history.

The Kremlin (Moscow)

As for the Hermitage, the Kremlin is a must-do when visiting or living in Russia. As the political center of the country, but also as a historical keystone, the Kremlin worths the visit ! Nevertheless, the Kremlin is big, highly secured and offers to the public many historical and religious artefacts and buildings. That’s it must be visited… but never forget, with a professional and accredited guide!

The Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow)

The Tretyakov Gallery is one of the most famous museum of Russia… and not for no reason. The Tretyakov Gallery is huge and exhibits masterpieces from Russian and European schools of arts. All of this is stunning and the Tretyakov is a must-do, especially for arts fan. So if you really want to know more about Russia and its artists, you should definitely book a guided-tour!

Peterhof Palace (St-Petersburg)

Another feel-like-a-Royal-for-a-day visit that will bring you back in Peter the Great’s splendorous time. Peterhof is the Russian Versailles and this says all. The palace is absolutely stunning on the inside as on the outside. Special notice for the gardens and the fountains that are the icing on the cake. Thanks to a professional guide, you’ll bypass all the tourists, learn more about the imperial history and the Russian culture in a shining historic environment. Definitely one of my favorite!

Christ the Savior on the Spilled Blood (St-Petersburg)

Seeing Christ the Savior on the Spilled Blood in this list, you’re probably thinking that I’m giving all Moscow’s and Petersburg’s classics. Wrong! The world-known cathedral has its path in this list because the inside is absolutely stunning (or am I only attracted by gold? Who knows…). But more than being beautiful and famous, Christ the Savior on the Spilled Blood is also full of hidden treasures, secrets and remains crucial in the Russian and Soviet history. That’s why you definitely need a guided visit!

Yusupov Palace (St-Petersburg)

Did you know that the Yusupov where the richest family in the late imperial Russia, and the most powerful after the Romanov? No ? Then here is why you need to visit there palace on the Moika with a guide! The Yusupov palace hides all the secrets of this significant family. But the palace is also, and above all, crucial in the Russian history, having been Rasputin’s murder place!

Peter and Paul fortress (St-Petersburg)

As the other places in this list (I admit I have a taste for the Imperial Russia), the Peter and Paul fortress is absolutely crucial in the Russian history. However, if you’re visiting it by yourself, you’ll find nothing else than big walls, a cathedral, graves and a garden. That’s why I advise you to do a guided-tour of it. Your guide will explain you the history of the fortress, showing you artefacts from the past, and give you details on the buried Romanov. Moreover, if (as me) you have a taste for royal families from the past and the present, the Peter and Paul fortress will serve you some delights!

Moscow city tour (Moscow)

Moscow is a big city. And sometimes the best to do in order to discover a big city is to sit and enjoy a guided-tour. With Tsar Visit’s guided tour of Moscow you’ll discover, in a very comfy way, the Russian capital city and all its wonders. A must-do if you don’t have much time in Moscow!

St-Petersburg city tour (St-Petersburg)

Basically the same as for Moscow. This tour is the best. Go for it!
