Titan Travel launches new Worldwide brochure

titan travel 2022

Titan Travel has launched the second edition of its flagship Worldwide brochure with 13 brand new tours for 2022 and 2023 departures.

The brochure features its widest collection of holidays from around the world from exclusive solo departures to small group tours.

Highlights include a 16-day ‘California and the Golden West ‘escorted tour, from £3,199 per person, featuring tours of Hollywood, San Diego and San Francisco and park entrance fees for Grand Canyon and Yosemite national parks.

John Constable, CEO, Titan Travel, said: "It’s great to close 2021 with the release of our latest Worldwide brochure as we look ahead to 2022. We know many customers like to plan their new travel adventures at this time of year and are pleased they’ll be able to do so."

"Coupled with our £49 Flexi-deposit and Protection Promise this brochure offers continued confidence and flexibility to our customers."

Titan’s new Cruise & Tour collection also features in the Worldwide brochure for the first time since launching in May 2021.

Each holiday combines the benefits of a Titan escorted tour with an ocean cruise such as Hurtigruten’s Antarctica expedition ship or Havila’s eco-friendly vessels.

Titan offers a 11-day ‘The Best of Norway by Rail and Sea – to the Top of the World’, cruise and tour, from £3,399 per person.

The tour includes a four-night cruise onboard Havila Castor or Havila Capella, a journey on the Flam Railway and Næroyfjord cruise.

Titan launches 2022 holidays earlier than ever

titan travel 2022

Titan Travel has released part of its 2022 escorted touring programme earlier than ever before, to keep up with demand from travellers looking to book in advance.

Available to book now, Titan has released more than 50 new departure dates for 2022 holidays. From African adventures, to travelling across Canada or exploring down under, some of its most popular tours are now on sale for travellers looking to book early and secure a future holiday at the best price.

Andy Squirrell, managing director, Titan Travel, commented: ?2020 has taught us a lot of things, including not taking travel and our freedom to explore the world for granted. With many travellers unable to explore the world this year it has given people the time and opportunity to think about their future travel plans and where they most wish to visit next. Following our recent customer survey, we know that many are already looking to travel in both 2021 and 2022, and so we have decided to launch a number of 2022 holidays earlier than ever before to help travellers plan ahead and start dreaming about their next adventure.

?It is a general rule of thumb that holiday prices increase closer to departure date and so Titan travellers will always get the best possible price the earlier they book. Should the price of a holiday become cheaper post booking, we will automatically refund the customer the difference ? in cash! With Titan the early bird really does catch the best price.?

Early bookers can benefit even more if booking before March 1, 2021 with Titan?s ?49 per person, Flexi Deposit. Available on the majority of tours. Titan?s Flexi Deposit provides travellers with unlimited booking changes at no extra cost until 75 days prior to departure.

Titan?s full collection of available 2022 holidays can be found here: https://www.titantravel.co.uk/best-tours-in-2022 .

Titan travel unveils new 2022 river cruise brochure.

titan travel, river cruise, cruise

Titan Travel has released its latest river cruise brochure featuring 2021 and 2022 itineraries.

The operator has three new cruises on sale, including the Eastern Europe Explorer with the Danube Delta voyage, as well as itineraries on its new chartered river cruise ship, MS River Discovery II , which makes its debut in June 2021.

A total of five cruise and stay itineraries are included, “perfect for those looking to combine one of Titan’s river cruise holidays with a short hotel break”, the operator said.

Deposits are available from £49 and itineraries feature Titan’s book with confidence policy and Protection Promise concept.

In addition, agents can earn a £20 lifestyle voucher for every new Titan holiday booked before 28 February 2021.

Titan Travel senior river and ocean cruise product manager Rob Stapley said: “We’re delighted to start 2021 with the launch of our latest river cruising brochure. Knowing travellers are already looking ahead to next year we are pleased to include Titan’s exclusive charter river cruise calendar for 2022 earlier than ever before.

“Featuring some of the most scenic waterways in the world, the brochure is filled with a selection of river cruises on board Titan’s MS Serenade 1 and our newest ship, MS River Discovery II , which will set sail for the first time in June this year.

“We’re committed to delivering the best river cruises available and, thanks to our latest policies, including Protection Promise and £49pp flexi-deposit, agents can book their clients a Titan river cruise for 2021 or 2022 with absolute confidence.

“Agents can read and download Titan’s latest brochures online, create a personalised e-brochure for their clients and even request a trade friendly brochure to be sent to their client’s home. We hope the brochure fills clients with inspiration and excitement for the year ahead, or beyond.”

Cairo, Alexandria and Nile Cruise

First ever time on a tour with Saga/ Titan in Egypt. The experience has been amazing and the Tour Manager Ayman Ali and Egyptologist Mohamed Sayed, have been exceptional. The staff on the MS Nile Symphony cannot do enough for you and the creativity of the housekeeping staff has been superb. It is all the little extra touches that make you feel special. The tour and optional tours have been well tailored to give us an insight into the history of Egypt. Highly recommended and thank you for making our time in Egypt so special.

1st April 2024 Grand Tour of Japan

1st April 2024. Grand Tour of Japan. price £8595 including single supplement .I really thought that this would be a holiday of a life time. Most of the problems were because of the guides. Jean our British guide was very caring and did her best but had never been too Japan before so at first was relying on the Japanese guide for guidance. Seako was the worst guide that I have ever had in all my years of travel. Her command of English was very poor in fact I could only understand the odd word, I found it useless trying to use the headphones. Her knowledge of places of interest was really poor as was her ability to answer questions. We seemed to be rushed through places of interest and beauty to keep appointments with cookery classes. I had gone on this trip to see the blossom and to see places of interest, not to learn to cook. On the plus side we did have a group of lovely people and although it was a very full on trip {which I expected} we did experience a wide range of what Japan has to offer.

My first ever holiday with Titan in Japan

My first ever holiday with Titan was a most enjoyable twelve days in Japan. The itinerary covered all the main places to visit in the country. Our two guides,Mark and Toshi were very well organised, helpful and friendly. All the hotels were excellent.

Hi Bryan, Thanks for taking the time to share your review. It sounds like you had a wonderful experience exploring Japan and that Mark and Toshi looked after you all really well. We look forward to you joining us on another Titan adventure, Best Wishes, Nick Titan Travel

All positive

All positive. Good tour guide, superb vessel, good food. If you want me to be very picky I’d like the background music to be turned down a fraction and the singer on the second night wasn’t very good. The traditional Croat singers were excellent and we would have liked an introduction to each song to know what it was about. A fine week and great value for money.

Magic on the Nile.

We booked the holiday Magic of the Nile, with a few days in Cairo as an extension. It was truly a magical holiday from start to finish. Titan looked after everything on the holiday, it was planned to perfection. The flights, hotels and the boat were all excellent with good food, service and was very clean. Staff made sure that they went that extra mile to make the holiday special. Our tour manager Ayman Eltaqy helped to make the holiday special. He made sure that anything we needed was sorted and especially organised the trips so we went at optimum times. He was approachable and advised us on Egyptian culture. The trips and excursions were delivered at a pace all could cope with and enjoy. The places visited were excellent and included all the places you would expect and more for an experience you would never forget. We were accompanied with an Egyptologist; John Emad who was extremely knowledgeable and explained everything in an interesting way. I learned so much. It was a fantastic holiday I will never forget it. I would thoroughly recommend this holiday.

How I wish I did not have to leave a…

How I wish I did not have to leave a star for this company. After our disasterous trip to Japan we and our friends wrote to the CEO of the company and we know others have as well. We were promised a reply but nothing has happened which is about the norm from Titan. Nothing is done. Having read reviews from other customers about their experiences with the Japanese trip on different dates to ours the whole thing is an absolute disaster from start to finish being put on a Cathay Pacific flight away from our friends and not the promised brochure BA flight is unforgiveable , Bad tour guides helped ruin the holiday with poor quality head phones lack of information about the areas visited, getting us lost on numerous occasions no idea of opening closing time, too many things to list. As to offering us a free drink in the happy hour at Hiroshima for the mess up with the flights, we found it to be a complete insult. AI Nick, get your act together because if Titan carries on like this, it is a doomed company.

Golden Triangle with Ranthambore

With a bit of trepidation we booked our first escorted tour to India’s Golden Triangle with Ranthambore National Park through Titan Travel. Our fears were unfounded as Alex our Titan Tour representative had the whole tour running like clockwork and so well organised. Moving us to a different seat on the coach every day meant as a group we all got to meet and get to know each other quite quickly which was a great idea. We loved Alex’s morning jokes and dry wit. Anil our tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable in Indian history and made every excursion informative. He also had a lovely sense of humour. The hotels were all fabulous with a good variation of buffet food to suit everyone. Will definitely be booking another tour with Titan Travel in the future.

Date of experience : 29 March 2024

Hi Jeanette, It's great to hear you have enjoyed your first escorted tour with Titan Travel. Thank you for your kind comments about Alex, we will share them with the India team. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Golden Triangle, India 🇮🇳

Our first time in India and it didn't disappoint. Our tour guide Alex Mathaei was wonderful, well organised and told a joke or two which always made us laugh. Anil, our local guide knew his history, very knowledgeable and always answered any question asked. It was a large group of us who all got on well. Lovely hotels where you could relax after a full on day. Early morning starts each day which you'd need to be prepared for, but well worth it. The Taj Mahal was awesome, bucket list ticked! The safari round Ranthambhore didn't disappoint, and we were very fortunate to see Tiger's, wow, so majestic. The only thing that let this holiday down was the seating arrangements on the plane,Titan didn't have us sitting next to our companion, but, thankfully on our return journey Alex managed to sort this out for us.

Hi Lyn, We are delighted we have been able to exceed your expectations on your first Titan tour. We hope you will be joining us again on many more adventures. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

India golden triangle with Ranthambore

First time in India and first time on an escorted tour. We were delighted with all the effort free hotels, excursions, travel and experiences. India is a complete assault on the senses in every way imaginable. We had a fantastic group to travel with which made it so enjoyable. Alex Matthaei was the best tour manager: drole, unflappable, a joke a day (raj of the pun) , oiled the gears so everything ran smoothly. Tour guide Anil was so schooled in Indian history he brought the sites alive and would answer any question on India. It’s a full on schedule with early starts but absolutely worth it. Hotels and food all of a high standard. Icing on the cake : we saw tigers !! Let down at Heathrow as our return driver hadn’t been booked , knocked a star off. Still waiting for a response to complaint.

Thank you for your feedback from which we are delighted your first escorted tour was a great success. We hope you will be joining us again in the future for many more adventures. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

The booking staff were helpful…

The booking staff were helpful especially Ferhat and Adam. Ferhat is a proper salesman. He knows how to talk to customers. I ended booking for 2 holidays when initially I wanted to book only one with Titan and the 2nd one with another company. That shows he is good at his job. I previously had a bad experience with Titan in Paloma Italy in 2010 which wasn’t investigated by Titan. I avoided Titan for many years so this is a trial to see how this holiday will go.

Date of experience : 15 April 2024

Hi Emah, Thank you for taking the time to share your great feedback with us.. We are delighted to hear how well Ferhat and Adam looked after you. Thank you for returning to Titan, we cannot wait to send you away on your next tour. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

20 day tour from Toyko to Nagasaki via…

20 day tour from Toyko to Nagasaki via coach and train. Great tour seeing a great country aways on my bucket list! Learnt a lot about culture and the country 3 weeks is a long time and the only hing I would say is some cities need a bit more time but the trip covers a vast area so time was tight.

Date of experience : 28 March 2024

Hi Stephen, Thanks so much for taking the time to share your review. We're so pleased to hear that you had such a great time exploring Japan. We do appreciate your feedback regarding the length of time in each city, this will be fed back to our products team for their information and review. We look forward to you joining us on another Titan adventure, Best Wishes, Nick Titan Travel

India’s Golden Triangle with Ranthambore

Brilliant trip, well organised (thank you Alex Matthaei) even laughed at most of his jokes. We also had a really well informed guide (Anil) who gave us insights into Indian culture as well as history behind each of the sites we visited. The hotels were fabulous and a varied range of meals available at each sitting. Transport between cities was an adventure in itself. I had never been along a dual carriageway on the wrong side of the road facing oncoming traffic before, but it seemed that is what they do when the road is closed. We got there in one piece and was something to laugh about with the rest of the group. I wouldn’t hesitate in recommending this trip and am looking at another trip with them in the future.

Thank you Ann, for a great review. We are glad Alex's humour kept you amused during the tour! We will ensure your kind comments are passed onto him and the India team. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Essence of Japan

Geoff our Titan tour manager really made the trip fun & enjoyable The Japanese guides were very knowledgeable but their English pronunciation made it difficult to understand. The down side of the trip wss once again the failure with British Airways, this time with loss of pre booked allocated seats.

Date of experience : 16 April 2024

Thank you Ian, for your feedback from which we are delighted to hear how well Geoff organised your Tour. It is a shame to read you did not receive your pre booked allocated seats. Our Customer Service Team have been made aware and will be in contact with you soon to resolve this matter. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Essence Of Japan Tour 1st April fiasco

Titan really need to get their act together. The Japan tour was the trip of a lifetime for my son and I and it started badly when most of us learned we would not be seated with our partners on the 13 hour outward flight. Obviously no thought about their customers but then I suppose Titan will blame BA. Then after nearly 2 hours in passport control when we arrived we then had to wait for our rooms to be available. Then we had to endure an inexperienced local guide for most of the tour who was difficult to understand and also got us lost a few times trying to find a shrine, temple or Samurai house. We spent nearly an hour walking in the park trying to find the Big Buddha temple in Nara. We then had an excellent guide for one day only around day 10 and then she was inexplicably changed for another guide. Overall the whole tour was spoiled by these issues to say the least but we all stuck together and bonded well despite all these grievances. Having now returned home and read about similar issues on other recent Titan tours to Japan then it is obvious Titan have sadly let down a lot of people. Still waiting for a response, apology and some recompense? Paul Smith

Hi Paul, We're really sorry to read about your experiences on your recent trip to Japan. This is clearly not the kind of feedback we aim to receive. We can assure you that your comments will be taken extremely seriously and fed back to our senior management teams for their information and review. We understand that our customer relations team have received a copy of your feedback and have begun investigating the points that you have raised. They will be in contact with your directly to address your concerns. We do hope that we can go some way to restoring your faith in us and that you will consider us again for your future travel plans, Best Wishes, Nick Titan Travel

Let the buyer be ware.

The Turkish holiday I wished to book - as advertised in their latest brochure was not available on the dates advertised, in addition the price had been increased by 25%. The shorter duration Turkish holiday, although priced as per brochure had been reduced by 1 day. In addition the online documentation is at odds with that received in the post.

Date of experience : 20 April 2024

Hi, Thanks for sharing your review of your booking experience. We do appreciate your comments as these help us to identify areas for improvement. We understand that you have been in contact with our sales staff to complete your booking and the team should be able to answer any further queries that you may have with regards to the pricing an availability. We do hope that we can restore your faith in us and that you have a wonderful holiday, Best Wishes, Nick Titan Travel

Golden Triangle India

I had a great time on this tour. The booking administration team was helpful. On the day of departure, I was collected by a lovely driver and from then on my whole experience was fabulous. I was with a fantastic group of people and we were fortunate enough to be led by Alex and Anil on our adventures. Borh were knowledgeable and organised. Can't wait to go on another Titan tour

Hi Tanya, It's great to read you had a great time on the Golden Triangle India tour. Thank you for such positive feedback. Kind regards, Nic Titan Travel

Saga Holidays and Titan Travel to be combined

  • Share by email

The operations of Saga Holidays and Titan Travel are to be combined.

The group said it was restructuring its tour operations “to deliver growth and create lower-cost, more agile, customer-focused business, ready for resumption of international travel”.

The over-50s specialist disclosed last week that it will be working with “a smaller” number of agents to enable it to “build stronger relationships” with those partners.  Titan later said the trade is “part of our recovery” .

In a trading update today, Saga said: “Our tour operations business – comprising Saga Holidays and Titan Travel – like the rest of the market, has been significantly impacted by Covid-19.

“We are completing the restructuring of our tour operations business to position ourselves for growth and create a lower-cost, more agile and dynamic operation which is focused on the changing needs of our customers.

“We are combining the operations of Saga Holidays and Titan Travel. This will maximise efficiency in touring, where the product offerings are highly complementary, and we will create a new hotel stay proposition to be launched later in 2022.”

Saga has previously been reported to be seeking the sale of Titan Travel, both in January 2020 and March 2019 .

Management of the over-50s company’s river cruise operation is also being moved to ocean cruise.

“These actions place us in a strong position as travel restrictions ease and pent-up customer demand builds,” Saga said.

“By initiating these changes, we expect to incur ‘below the line’ restructuring costs in the range of £10-15 million in the year ended 31 January 2022, with around two-thirds of this amount relating to impairments of IT assets which are non-cash in nature.”

Saga’s cruise arm is on course to report pre-tax losses of up to £50 million as its travel businesses continued to be affected by the pandemic.

However, company said cruise generated positive earnings [ebitda] in the second half of 2021, with a “strong” load factor of 68%.

Issuing the trading update for the period from August 1, 2021 to January 26 this year, Saga said the underlying loss before tax for its cruise division is expected to be £45-£50 million after ship depreciation and financing costs.

The company reported strong 2022-23 cruise bookings, with a load factor of 86% for the first half and 73% for the full year.

Saga said: “Given underlying disruption and restrictions in travel through the second half, the group is expected to make a small underlying loss before tax for 2021-22.

“Although mindful of potential for continued uncertainty, we expect to return to profit in 2022-23.”

A full strategic update will be included with Saga’s preliminary results announcement on March 23.

Group chief executive Euan Sutherland said: “Saga has delivered a successful second half of the financial year with our Insurance business remaining in growth and delivering positive momentum across all key metrics, while our cruise ships resumed their international itineraries.

“With a stronger Insurance business and progress being made in transforming our travel business, our turnaround strategy is working well.

“While Omicron has impacted travel bookings through December and January, our outlook for cruise in 2022-23 and beyond is positive.

“We approach the future with confidence, having demonstrated our ability to manage our way through recent challenges.

“We remain confident that the strength of our brand, our management team and our strengthened financial position will now allow us to return the business to sustainable growth, creating long-term value for our stakeholders.”

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Tennessee Titans NFL draft picks 2024: Full list of team's round-by-round selections

titan travel 2022

Here is a 2024 NFL draft pick-by-pick breakdown for the Tennessee Titans :

Round 1 (No. 7 overall) — JC Latham, OT, Alabama : Maybe not the tackle the Titans had targeted, but Latham should settle in to an O-line that needs the help . Massive at 6-6, 342-pounds, he was a fixture at right tackle for the Crimson Tide and is a mauler who can also play guard. And given the Titans addressed the offensive skill positions in free agency (WR Calvin Ridley, RB Tony Pollard), may as well continue leveling up the line after they made LG Peter Skoronski their first-round pick in 2023 . Now Tennessee continues to invest in the protection around second-year QB Will Levis. And don’t forget, new head coach Brian Callahan hired his father, legendary O-line coach Bill Callahan, to remediate a front five that surrendered 64 sacks in 2023, tied for most in the AFC. Draft tracker

Round 2 (38) — T'Vondre Sweat, DT, Texas : The Big 12 defensive player of the year, they don't come much bigger than the 6-5, 366-pounder . His weight and a recent DWI arrest didn't help Sweat during the pre-draft process, but the man can still plug a hole. And he'll likely help Pro Bowl DT Jeffery Simmons penetrate even more effectively. Draft tracker

NASA greenlights 2028 launch for epic Dragonfly mission to Saturn's huge moon Titan

N ASA's delayed Dragonfly drone mission to Saturn's largest moon Titan is on track to launch in July 2028, the space agency confirmed late Tuesday (April 16).

The highly anticipated decision greenlights the mission team to proceed to final mission design and testing in preparation for the revised launch date.

The car-sized Dragonfly , which is being built by the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, will reach Titan in 2034. For the next 2.5 years, the nuclear-powered drone is expected to perform one hop every Titan day — 16 days to us Earthlings — hunting for prebiotic chemical processes at various pre-selected locations on the frigid moon, which is known to contain organic materials.

Related: Nuclear-powered Dragonfly mission to Saturn moon Titan delayed until 2028, NASA says

As the only satellite in our solar system known to be blanketed by a dense atmosphere and host liquid seas on its surface, Titan has long interested planetary scientists, who think the moon resembles the primordial, methane-rich Earth and could offer clues to the genesis of life. Rivers of hydrocarbons, combined with the presence of potentially life-supporting organic material , boost the case for Titan's habitability, which Dragonfly will help investigate.

While the Dragonfly mission passed a series of independent technical reviews early last year and was on track for its original launch date of 2027, NASA had postponed setting the final launch date due to uncertainty in how much money would be available for mission development this year and the next. The proposed 2025 budget request for NASA, released by the Biden Administration in early March, allocates $2.73 billion for robotic planetary exploration that includes the Dragonfly mission, whose total lifecycle costs will now be $3.35 billion, NASA said in a statement .

That final price tag is significantly higher than the initially proposed cost for Dragonfly, whose development was capped at $1 billion when it was first selected in 2019 as the fourth mission in NASA's New Frontiers program. The space agency said the mission's budget increased because of design iterations, supply-chain issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic and extra funds for a heavy-lift launch vehicle that would compensate for the delayed arrival at Titan by shortening the spacecraft's cruise phase.

Over a decade before Dragonfly actually flies on Titan, several of the drone’s components, including its control and navigation systems, have been tested on Earth. In July 2022, mission engineers flew a drone identical to Dragonfly over California’s Imperial Dunes, which resemble Titan’s organic-rich dunes, and in wind tunnels at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Virginia. NASA's official confirmation on Tuesday allows the mission to proceed to final design stages.

"Dragonfly is a spectacular science mission with broad community interest, and we are excited to take the next steps on this mission," Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said in the statement. "Exploring Titan will push the boundaries of what we can do with rotorcraft outside of Earth."

Harvey Weinstein Conviction Overturned by N.Y. Court of Appeals

In a staggering 4-to-3 decision, the state’s highest court overturned the conviction of the disgraced movie producer, who in 2020 was found guilty of two felony sex crimes.

Harvey Weinstein, wearing a suit and tie, leaves a court building with a walker surrounded by law enforcement officers.

  • April 25, 2024

New York’s highest court on Thursday overturned the felony sex crimes conviction of the notorious Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, a staggering reversal of a bedrock case in the #MeToo era that prompted countless victims of sexual harassment and assault to come forward as accusers.

In a bitterly contested 4-to-3 decision , the New York Court of Appeals found that the judge who had presided over Mr. Weinstein’s case deprived him of a fair trial in 2020 by allowing prosecutors to call witnesses who said Mr. Weinstein had assaulted them — but whose accusations were not the basis for any of the charges against him.

Responding on Thursday, the Manhattan district attorney, Alvin L. Bragg, announced that he would seek to prosecute Mr. Weinstein again.

“We will do everything in our power to retry this case, and remain steadfast in our commitment to survivors of sexual assault,” a spokeswoman for Mr. Bragg’s office said. The case was originally prosecuted by his predecessor, Cyrus R. Vance Jr.

For Mr. Weinstein, 72, the immediate impact of the ruling might amount to little more than a change of scenery. He is likely to be transferred from the prison in Rome, N.Y., where he has been held since 2020, to a facility nearer to New York City, where he will await the filing of new charges. But the opinion also raised questions about whether a separate conviction in California — on rape and sexual assault charges — can survive a similar legal challenge.

That case, which saw Mr. Weinstein sentenced to another 16 years in prison in 2022, also relied in part on witnesses whose accusations did not lead to charges. Mr. Weinstein’s lawyer in the California case said she planned to file an appeal next month.

The Harvey Weinstein Appeal Ruling, Annotated

Read the ruling from New York’s top court that overturned the 2020 conviction of Harvey Weinstein on felony sex crime charges in Manhattan, with context and explanation by New York Times journalists.

A representative of the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office said it was “saddened by the news out of New York.”

“Our office had representatives in New York during the trial, and we are aware of the extreme difficulties the victims faced while testifying about the traumas that Mr. Weinstein caused them,” the representative said, adding: “We are confident that our convictions will withstand appellate scrutiny.”

The decision to overturn the New York conviction, while shocking to many, had been anticipated in legal circles. The criminal case against Mr. Weinstein had been viewed as fragile since the day it was filed, and prosecutors were believed to have taken risky, boundary-pushing bets to see it through. Still, the ruling was met with expressions of shock and anger by some of Mr. Weinstein’s accusers.

Ashley Judd, the first actress to come forward with allegations against Mr. Weinstein, called it “unfair to survivors.”

“We still live in our truth,” Ms. Judd said on Thursday. “And we know what happened.”

Mr. Weinstein’s lawyer, Arthur Aidala, said his client learned of the decision when he was handed a news report on a slip of paper by someone in the prison facility.

“He said thank you more times than I can count,” said Mr. Aidala, who spoke to Mr. Weinstein by phone Thursday morning. “Harvey was very gracious, very grateful.”

The former producer’s health has been steadily declining in recent years. He has diabetes, eye problems and heart issues, has used a walker and was housed in a medical unit at the prison, the Mohawk Correctional Facility.

“He has been going through bouts of difficulty,” said a spokesman, Juda Engelmayer.

Mr. Weinstein had been a sharp-elbowed titan in the film industry, rising to power in the 1990s behind a stream of critically lauded, blockbuster movies under the Miramax label. His downfall after lurid accusations emerged from dozens of actresses and former colleagues became a primer for how the world viewed and treated many once-powerful men who used their positions for sex.

Mr. Weinstein was accused of sexual misconduct by more than 100 women . But in New York he was convicted of raping an aspiring actress, Jessica Mann, and assaulting a television production assistant, Miriam Haley, and sentenced to 23 years in prison. Thursday’s decision did not discount the credibility of the accusations against him. Rather, it found fault with the admission of the testimony of women whose descriptions of abuse fell outside the criminal case.

Prosecutors in sexual assault and other cases often seek to use them to establish a pattern of behavior. But doing so risks unfairly influencing the jury because the defendant is supposed to be judged only on the crimes he is charged with. For that reason, judges seek to limit such testimony, and the judge in Mr. Weinstein’s case, Justice James M. Burke, did not permit the prosecutors to call as many of those witnesses as they had hoped to. But he did allow a handful to testify.

The appeals court said that he should not have.

“It is an abuse of judicial discretion to permit untested allegations of nothing more than bad behavior that destroys a defendant’s character,” Judge Jenny Rivera wrote on behalf of the majority, “but sheds no light on their credibility as related to the criminal charges.”

Donna Rotunno, Mr. Weinstein’s lead trial lawyer in New York, praised the ruling on Thursday.

“They were prosecuting him for sins, not crimes,” she said. “This speaks to our justice system as a whole. The court ruling says to prosecutors: Winning at all costs is not your job. Your job is to put on a fair trial.”

The Court of Appeals also faulted the trial judge for permitting prosecutors to question the producer about uncharged allegations — spanning back decades — if he decided to take the stand. He did not testify.

Dawn Dunning , one of the women who prosecutors called to the stand even though Mr. Weinstein had not been charged with assaulting her, said on Thursday that she had no regrets.

“I am still proud that I testified and confronted that convicted rapist,” Ms. Dunning said in a statement, adding: “I am a stronger person for having done so, and I know that other women found strength and courage because I and other Weinstein survivors confronted him publicly.”

“The culture has changed,” she added, “and I am confident that there is no going back.”

In 2022, after a vigorous debate by the justices, a lower appeals court upheld Mr. Weinstein’s conviction . They wrote that the testimony from the additional witnesses had been instrumental in showing that the producer did not see his victims as “romantic partners or friends,” but that “his goal at all times was to position the women in such a way that he could have sex with them, and that whether the women consented or not was irrelevant to him.”

In a quietly dramatic twist, this February, when New York’s highest court heard the producer’s latest and final appeal, four of the seven judges were women, and Thursday’s majority ruling included three female judges.

Their decision landed with stinging dissents. “Fundamental misunderstandings of sexual violence perpetrated by men known to, and with significant power over, the women they victimize are on full display in the majority’s opinion,” Judge Madeline Singas wrote.

The decision to overturn promised to launch fresh debate about the ground rules for criminal convictions in sexual misconduct cases.

“The #MeToo movement showed how important it is to have accounts from multiple accusers,” said Deborah Tuerkheimer, a former Manhattan prosecutor who is now a professor at the Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. But witness rules — which are strict for a reason — can transform courtrooms into an “alternate universe in which evidence relevant to sex crimes is often kept from the jury.”

“There’s a tension at the heart of it,” she said, “and prosecution in the #MeToo era will continue to deal with this dilemma.”
