Eiffel Tower: How to get tickets, find discounts and save time

While arguably the most recognized monument in the world, the Eiffel Tower hardly survived the 1889 World’s Fair. Few tourists today realize that, as the tower was constructed for the event, the city planned to tear down the tower in the days following the fair.

Good thing that they never got around to it, because these days everyone wants a piece of the Dame de Fer (Iron Lady).

Planning your visit to Paris’ most famous attraction? Here are a few tips to make your visit as enjoyable as possible:

Ticket prices

Elevator to the 1st and 2nd Level: €17.10 Elevator to the top: €26.80 Stairs to the 1st and 2nd Level: €10.70 Stairs to the 1st and 2nd Level, then Elevator to the top: €20.40

Should you buy tickets in advance?

You can save time by buying your tickets online , in advance, and avoiding the ticket line when you get there. During peak travel times, though, online tickets (especially to the top) may be sold out. However, they would still be available at the tower for immediate use. You’ll just have to wait in that ticket line…

So really, the short answer is: Yes, buy tickets in advance through the official Eiffel Tower website and book your slot. But don’t be discouraged if you don’t see anything available for your time and date — you can still just show up and wait in the ticket line.

Discounts on Eiffel Tower tickets

Ages 12 to 24 enjoy a discounted price of €8.60 on elevator admissions to the second floor, €13.40 to the top, and €5.40 on a stairs ticket. Ages 4 to 11 receive a discounted rate of €4.30 on elevator admissions to the second floor, €6.70 to the top, and €2.70 on a stairs ticket.

The Eiffel Tower is open every day of the year, including many major holidays. Hours are as follows:

May 7 – June 17: Open from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 p.m. From June 18 – May 6: Open from 9:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Closed July 14 for Bastille Day.

Time of day to go

Everyone has a favorite time to head up the tower, but the evening time, right around sunset, is one of the most stunning. If you time it right, you’ll be watching the sun set over Paris while the twinkling lights below start to pop alive. By the time you reach the summit, you’ll have the best possible view of the city at its finest.

Climbing it

As long as you’re not wearing heels, you may opt to climb the stairs to the tower’s second level to catch the elevator to the very top. This ticket saves you €6.40, or put that money toward a well-deserved glass of wine (or two!) at a café afterward.

What to wear

It gets windy at the top of the tower, so it’s a good idea to dress accordingly, especially during the cooler months. You’ll be much more comfortable at the top if you have a little something extra to wrap around yourself.

Alternative towers

In the end, there are no real tricks to visiting the tower. If there’s a huge line, there’s a huge line. But no one is forcing you to wait.

If simply seeing the tower is enough, consider going up the Tour Montparnasse , that big ugly skyscraper in the south of the city. From the top of this building you get a bird’s eye view of everything with less fuss. There’s also a bar up top — win-win situation?

Transportation to the Eiffel Tower

The Metro line 6 will drop you off at Bir Hakeim, the closest station. For better views while arriving at the tower, lines 6 and 9 at the station Trocadéro is a stunning way to introduce yourself to Eiffel’s masterpiece with just a short walk across the river afterward. Line 8 at Ecole Militaire is also a short walk through the Champs de Mars, offering great views of the tower as well.

To be a bit more accurate about the Eiffel Tower:

It was NOT scheduled to be demolished just after the 1889 Exposition. In an unusual agreement, Eiffel built the tower with financing he arranged, in return for a 20-year concession to operate and recoup his investment. Only then was it subject to demolition.

By the time the twenty years was up, Eiffel had cleverly found ways to prolong its life by making it useful to the French military as a radio tower, by setting it up as an important meteorological research point, and more.

I just returned from a one day trip to Paris with my family, and the Eiffel Tower was on our must-see list. We did go there with the aim of just enjoying the view of the tower from the ground.

It was quite impressive and beautiful but the surroundings did not quite live up to our expectation. The area around the tower was fenced, filled with tourists (a lot of tourists), and way too many street sellers trying to sell us tower key hangers made in China. On top of that the area in general was quite messy.

All maybe what you can expect from a top attraction in the middle of a major capital. In retrospect we do regret not having bought tickets to get the view of Paris from the tower. Next time we will 🙂

South Pillar

The adult price applies to adults 25 years and over.  There are discount rates for young people (12-24 years old), children (4-11 years old) and for those with disabilities. Admission is free for children under 4 years old. The price of the ticket varies upon how you go up (elevator and/or stairs) and the destination (2nd floor or the upper floor) you select. 

The desired visit date is not available, what should I do?

Certain days (weekends, days during peak season between July and August) are in high demand and we sell out quickly, especially for e-tickets for the top floor, which are the most popular. If you are flexible, select another date that is shown as available. The dates marked in orange indicate that the last tickets are available. Lined out or grayed out dates are no longer available. If there is no more online availability, note that tickets to visit the Eiffel Tower are also sold on site at the ticket offices at the monument. Regardless, we sell our tickets online up to 60 days in advance (for lift tickets) and 14 days in advance (for stairs tickets to second floor). If you can, plan your visit well in advance, so you will have the choice of date, destination and time.

On the online ticket shop, you can buy up to 9 tickets for the same order. Groups who want to buy tickets, regardless of the number, must use the ticket office site reserved for groups.

The Eiffel Tower’s online box office allows you to purchase your ticket online for the 2nd floor or the Summit at the official rate. You can purchase individual e-tickets for up to 9 people. Tickets can also be purchased several weeks in advance. With the e-ticket system, experience no lines! You will directly receive your ticket by e-mail so you can print it at home or store it on your smartphone. If e-tickets are sold out for the date/time or destination that you search, it is always possible to purchase tickets on the spot on the day of your visit.  At the scheduled hour, go directly to the lifts or stairs without having to wait at the ticket stands. Tickets for visits from June 17, 2024, will go on sale later than usual (instead of 60 days before the day of the visit). Keep an eye on our official online ticket office to find out when tickets are available for this summer, including during the Olympic Games. Because of the high demand and many cases of fraud among non-official ticketing websites, we invite you to remain vigilant: do not buy tickets from websites offering visits of the Eiffel Tower this summer (including during the Olympic Games). If no tickets are available online, they can still be purchased at the monument ticket office for immediate use on the day of your visit.

(1) The reduced rates apply upon presentation of proof of age.

(2) Children under 4 must be in possession of a ticket for free. Their companions pay the adult individual fare.

PLEASE NOTE: the top of the tower and the stairways are not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
