Best time to visit uganda.

For sunshine and hot weather, visit Uganda from late December to late February as this is the dry season. June to September is also a good time to travel as you can expect warm temperatures and little rain. The wet seasons run from March to May and October to November – during this time downpours are frequent and often create less accessibility on roads and within some national parks.

Culture and customs

Uganda is home to many different tribal groups, and a wide variety of different customs and traditions can be observed depending on where you travel in Uganda. Spontaneous dance and song is a hallmark of African culture and this is not an exception in Uganda, where tribes and villages will often greet groups of newcomers with rousing song and dance. Greeting others is a very important part of Ugandan culture and not greeting or acknowledging someone you are passing or meeting can be seen as impolite, especially in rural areas and villages. Shaking hands is an appropriate greeting when meeting someone for the first time and often both hands are given for a handshake.

Food or drink is often extended to visitors, even though many Ugandans have very little, and it is viewed as impolite to decline an offer of food or hospitality. Accept willingly and graciously eat or drink what has been offered to you. Generally, most of Uganda’s population lives in rural or regional centers, although urban areas are rapidly expanding and modern influences are infiltrating Ugandan society at a fast rate. With this modernization, some of the old ways are dying out as younger Ugandans become more adept at using technology, although many still live tribal lives based on hunting and agriculture.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Things to try in Uganda

This local dish of mashed plantains, often cooked in a nut sauce and served with meat or fish, is a favorite with locals and can be found pretty much everywhere in Uganda

2. Chai Tea

While coffee is grown widely in Uganda, most is shipped out for international sale so locals drink tea instead. Chai tea is popular, which you’ll find at markets, kiosks, cafes and restaurants.

3. Fresh Fruit

Mango, pineapple, avocado, banana, plantain, passionfruit and jackfruit are all plentiful in Uganda. Buy from a market or roadside stall as a refreshing, cheap snack.

Geography and environment

Uganda sits in East Africa and shares borders with Sudan,   Tanzania , Democratic Republic of Congo,   Rwanda   and   Kenya . Despite being landlocked, Uganda still has access to fresh water via surrounding lakes (Lake Victoria, Lake Edward and Lake Albert). As a well-watered country with rich soil, much of Uganda’s land is used for agriculture and cash crops. Coffee, cotton, tea and tobacco plantations are common sights, as are farms of plantains, corn and cassava. The rest of the country is a combination of woodlands, swamps, forests and savanna, as well as pockets of protected nature reserves and national parks.

History and government

Early history.

Inhabited by hunter-gatherer tribes for centuries, it's thought that the Hamitic people from neighboring countries arrived sometime before 1000 AD, bringing with them knowledge of animal husbandry and agriculture. Migration from neighboring countries continued, with tribespeople from Kenya and Tanzania flowing into Uganda well into the 16th century, as well as Arab traders moving inland from the coast and Christian missionaries arriving during the 1800s.

Recent history

Uganda came under colonial rule during the late 1800s, and was known as the Kingdom of Uganda under British rule. Colonial rule continued for many years until independence was granted in 1962. From 1971 to 1979, Uganda came under the rule of Idi Amin, hallmarked by a time of economic decline and human rights violations. By the time Amin had fled to Libya, many Ugandans were suffering from extreme economic hardship and social difficulties. Conflicts with neighboring countries in the 80s and 90s created more turmoil and upheaval, although more recently, Ugandans have enjoyed a time of relative peace with an improved economy largely due to an increase in tourist numbers and agricultural export.

Top 10 amazing animals of Uganda

1. mountain gorilla.

Be transfixed by the wonder and majesty of Uganda’s highly endangered mountain gorillas. The challenging trek through the steamy jungle of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is all worth it once you’re beholding these beautiful beings.

These stealthy predators are relatively difficult to spot as they are masters of staying silent and blending in with the scenery. Watching a leopard stalk prey is a tense, exciting and riveting experience.

There is simply nothing more thrilling than casting your eye on a pride of regal lions. Whether they are lying in the sun or going in for the kill, lions are captivating creatures to watch.

Book 3 Days Bwindi Gorilla Group Safari

2024/2025 guide for booking group tours in uganda & african safari holidays.

Described by the former British premier, Winston Churchill as the “Pearl of Africa”, Uganda is undoubtedly every traveler's dream destination. It is undoubtedly one of the best places to visit in africa.

There is so much to offer in a Uganda safari itinerary. With its diverse natural endowments and extreme beauty, Uganda is home to over 11% of the global bird diversity and 50% of Africa's bird species, 53.9% global population of the remaining Mountain Gorillas, 7% of the global mammal species diversity and 39% of Africa's mammal wealth, 19% of Africa's Amphibian species, and 14% of Africa's reptile species, 750 culture heritage sites and 5 public museums like the Uganda National museum, Sate-lite Greatlakes Museum, Soroti museum, Igongo cultural museum, Fort Lugard Museums and other 16 private and community owned museums well distributed across its various regions.

Over 1.4 million visitors go on Uganda tours annually; with majority being foreigners. With several tourism militia deployed in parks, the safety of tourists is guaranteed.

Most savor nature and wildlife, others enjoy the serene environment and climate while some just want to relax and unwind at the white sand beaches, admire the sun and taste the delicious Ugandan cuisine.

Uganda gorilla trekking is so far the best experience of all the three other destinations.

Whether you plan to travel in january, may, march, june, december or any other month, whether you are travelling with your family or any other group, our tour operator company is ready to tailor your group travel Uganda itinerary to match the safari season.

Having your Uganda group safari in January, May, March, June, November or any other month doesn't guarantee bad or good weather.

The best time to visit Uganda is all year round but travelling during specific months is highly recommended. High season months usually get lots of bookings and safari parks get crowded especially in primate and game viewing destinations.

Visitors are usually recommended to book their flights and make a deposit for their Uganda safari tours & holidays several months in advance. Lodges and camps also get fully booked easily.

During this time, your packing list can include more of light clothes but a few thick clothing should be packed as well. Tipping is highly recommended and you should budget for it.

Group wildlife safaris in Uganda

Need reasons why you should book an African safari in uganda? Uganda iconic wildlife is made up of the Big 5 mammals, abundant birdlife, primates and more; all which are concentrated in its protected areas, including the national parks, wildlife reserves / sanctuaries, wetlands, zoos/wildlife education centers, forest reserves and more.

Uganda has a total of 10 fully fledged National Parks. Each of these parks has Uganda safari lodges for budget, mid-range and luxury travellers.

Among other attractions include 12 game reserves including the recently opened private conservancy, 13 wildlife sanctuaries, gazetted wetland systems, waterbodies, all enabling visitors to enjoy exhilarating wildlife group safari adventures. This is more reason to have your safaris in Uganda, Africa.

Cultural group safaris in Uganda

Ugandan people have for several times been voted as the most hospitable and heart-warming in Africa, and as a result; the formation of the country was born out of the unification of ancient kingdoms and chiefdoms.

This common heritage still lives on in the people's hearts. The traditional lifestyle, food, clothing, dialect and native practices are still alive till today.

With over 40 different languages spoken, Uganda is regarded as a cultural melting pot of Africa and world at large.

This is also evidenced by the existence of so many indigenous dialects belonging to only five distinct linguistic groups, coupled with equally a diverse cultural mosaic of music, art and craft work.

A group tour in Uganda can help you explore all these stunning cultural and historical features that the pearl of Africa boasts on your Uganda group safaris.

When to visit Africa for a Uganda group safari

Budget safaris are good for low season months where as Uganda luxury safaris are best for high season months.

Uganda can be visited anytime of the year because of her ever conducive climate that favors tourists from all walks of life.

Uganda's ideal climate ranges from the warmth of the low-lying areas in the north and north western Uganda to relatively cool weather in the highlands of Kigezi, near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

However, in Uganda most months are dry with daily temperatures averaging between 23-27 degrees and in rare circumstances even reaching 29 degrees in some places.

Cold months include November and May characterized with temperatures ranging between 17-20 degrees, especially in the south Kigezi region.

Due to the cool moist winds from mountain ranges and water bodies, most parts of Uganda have equatorial climate characterized with heavy rains and lush vegetation.

There are ideally two rainy seasons (peaks) - one that starts from Mid-October to early December and the another rainfall peak happens from March - May.

The dry season on the other hand happens between June to Mid - October and from mid-December to February. This is a high / peak season for tourism, due to the fact that it falls within the summer holidays.

The dry season is a great time for epic game viewing and trekking in national parks. Uganda's climate generally depends on its own topography and that of the neighboring regions.

Towering mountain ranges like the Rwenzoris and Virunga mountains along its margins, the rift valley and abundant waterbodies including Lake Victoria and River Nile all exert a great influence on the climate patters of Uganda.

Choice of African safari lodges

There are so many budget, moderate and luxury safari lodges in each Ugandan national park. However, try to request for comfortable lodges in your Uganda safari packages irrespective of the price to ensure your comfort.

Whether you need a private room in a budget jungle lodge, a villa, a lavish resort or an ultra-modern hotel in the heart of any of Uganda's big cities, hostels, dorms, safari tents, African styled Bandas, or anything else; Uganda has never run short of these! Just mention your budget, and an appropriate accommodation will be arranged exclusively for you.

We are one of those Uganda safari tour operators that will offer you huge discounts on accommodation.

Whether you are a group of backpackers looking for an expanse camping ground or dormitories, a couple on honeymoon or private family in need of maximum privacy and exclusiveness, a group of students looking for cheap lodging, nature-oriented / eco-friendly travelers or just an open minded fella; Uganda is simply a place of everyone regardless of their budget and status.

Travelling solo means to travel completely alone and we have extraordinary prowess at interlocking and combining group tours with independent travel - the best of both worlds!

There will be those seasons when you need a group of friends by your side, either to take in a view from top of a 4000m mountain or trek to meet the primates in Uganda's scary jungles, or having fun at the beach.

When this happens, then you definitely need to join a group on your next Uganda safari. There are endless reasons why we advise travelers to join groups for their safaris to Uganda.

Join our unique Uganda Group Tours and experience Uganda safaris at an affordable cost. Make your trip to Uganda unforgettable with a group tour!

Uganda Group Tours are safaris where a group of travelers with common interests explore Uganda while sharing transportation costs, lodges (optional) and a guide. Uganda group tours are considered the best way to spend less (save money) while on a Uganda safari. Sometimes, group tours are made up of travelers from the same area and at times, those from different walks of life.

In order for the Uganda Group Tour to be successful, travelers MUST agree on the travel dates, have the same travel goals or interest and should be able to share vehicles, a guide and a lodge/hotel where necessary.

To make our Uganda Group Tours convenient and inclusive, we categorize groups into 4 categories. These are; students group tours, seniors group tours, sports group and adventure group tours. It is advisable you join a group that suits your category to avoid feeling lonely and misunderstandings.

We offer Small Uganda Group Tours (4-16) where you travel and or sleep with the same people in the same car or lodge/hotel throughout the safari. A large group tour (18-100 plus) is the one with high number of travelers especially students where you travel in more than one car and can sleep in different accommodation facilities and travels in different vehicles.

Best Time for Uganda Group Tours:

Discovering the splendors of Uganda’s wildlife is an experience best enjoyed during the dry seasons, when the skies are clear, and nature is in full view. The dry seasons, spanning from June to September and December to February, offer unrivalled viewing experiences especially within the dense forests when trekking, along the passable hiking trails, and passable game drive routes. During these periods, the minimal rainfall creates ideal conditions for exploring Uganda’s diverse ecosystems.

Moreover, the dry spell draws numerous animals to common water sources, providing exceptional opportunities to witness a variety of wildlife congregated in one location. Although traveling during these peak seasons often comes with a higher price tag, our Uganda group tours are designed to provide an economical solution. With us, you get to immerse in the best of what Uganda’s wildlife has to offer without stretching your budget. You should always make your booking on time1

If your dream is mountain gorilla trekking, Uganda is the place to go. Rwanda is the only other country in which these gentle giants can be encountered on a trek, and Ugandan permits are a fraction of the price charged over the border. Apart from gorilla trekking, there are lots of other things to do in Uganda. The country is home to many primates and Kibale NP offers amazing chimpanzee trekking and habituation experiences. Kidepo Valley, Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks are great for game drives in a savannah environment with plenty of lion, buffalo and elephant, as well as a range of antelope species. 8 Questions About Uganda Gorilla & Safari Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

tour groups to uganda

When is the best time to go on safari in Uganda?

“Uganda can be visited at any time. Mountain gorilla trekking is on most tourists’ itineraries and permits are available throughout the year. Uganda is a tropical country with lots of rainfall. The wettest months are March to May and these months can be problematic to travel in. During these Wet season months , some lodges close down and some roads become very muddy and hard to negotiate. The Dry season months of June to August and December to February offer the easiest travel conditions and these months are also recommended for Ugandan gorilla trekking. General wildlife viewing in the savannah reserves is also best during the Dry season months as animals gather around rivers and waterholes, and the grass is shorter, which makes spotting easier.”

Why visit Uganda, what are the major attractions?

“Uganda is mostly known for its mountain gorilla tourism and most people visiting Uganda will include a gorilla trekking experience in their itinerary. It is possible to go on a Uganda gorilla tour as an add-on to an East African safari in Kenya or Tanzania, but Uganda has lots more to offer, so consider visiting some of the savannah reserves and tracking chimpanzees as well. Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a variety of activities such as chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge and a boat trip on Kazinga Channel. The wildlife is diverse and one of the highlights is the tree-climbing lions in the Ishasha sector of the park. Murchison Falls National Park offers excellent wildlife viewing as well as spectacular scenic beauty. You can take a boat trip on the Nile River to the famous Murchison Falls or to the delta. The latter is particularly rewarding for birders, and sightings of the prehistoric shoebill are very common in this area. More remote is Kidepo Valley National Park. This park offers a true wilderness experience and is home to many species that don’t occur elsewhere in the country, including the graceful cheetah. Primate lovers should visit Kibale National Park as it offers the most reliable chimpanzee trekking in the country, and a special habituation program is available for visitors wanting to spend a full day with their closest relatives.”

What does gorilla trekking in Uganda cost?

“The permit fee for mountain gorilla trekking in Uganda is currently US$700. Although this might seem expensive, it is a bargain compared to the US$1,500 permit fee in Rwanda, which is currently the only other country where these gentle giants can be tracked. Gorilla trekking is offered in two parks in Uganda: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga National Park . Both offer a similar experience where you can spend one hour with a gorilla troop after you have reached their location. The group size is limited to eight people. A new activity, offered in Bwindi only, is the gorilla habituation experience. Two semi-habituated troops can be tracked by a limited group of four tourists daily, who can stay for four hours. Viewing is less easy as these gorillas prefer to keep their distance since they aren’t yet fully habituated. The price for this special activity is US$1,500.”

How is the wildlife viewing in Uganda?

“Uganda is an exciting destination for wildlife viewing, and its strength lies in its variety. Uganda has beautiful rainforests that are home to many primates. Mountain gorilla trekking is the top attraction, but almost equally exciting is chimpanzee trekking. A variety of monkeys can be seen throughout the country and a troop of habituated golden monkeys, endemic to the Albertine Rift, can be visited in Mgahinga National Park. Away from the forest environment, Uganda has several good savannah reserves where more conventional wildlife viewing is offered on game drives and boat trips. None of the savannah reserves offers quite the same level of exciting animal viewing as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya; however, the scenic beauty in Uganda is unparalleled and the birding is nothing less than outstanding.”

How safe is Uganda for tourists?

“Today Uganda is a safe destination. The north of the country has had periods of instability, but these issues are mostly in the past. It is, however, recommended that you get local advice on the current safety situation before heading into the Karamoja region and Kidepo Valley National Park. As is the case in any developing country, petty crime is a concern in urban centers, and visitors should take normal safety precautions when visiting cities and avoid travelling at night. All national parks have security police to maintain the safety of all visitors.”

How do I select a reliable Ugandan tour operator?

“Most Africa-specialist operators will be able to add a Uganda gorilla trekking package to any African safari. However, if you would like to explore the country further, a specialist Uganda operator is recommended. There are several good local outfits in the country and many of them offer Uganda gorilla trekking tours through SafariBookings.com. Always check the customer reviews as this will give you a good indication on reliability and quality of the guides and vehicles offered by the different operators. International operators usually work through these local outfits, but they sometimes offer more insurance and they might be in a better position to deal with issues if something goes wrong. They are also able to book your international flights as part of a Uganda gorilla trekking tour.”

What type of accommodation can I expect?

“Uganda has developed for tourism more recently than some of the more established safari destinations in the region, such as Kenya and Tanzania. Most parks and reserves now offer a good variety of accommodation options ranging from budget to very upmarket. The Ugandan gorilla trekking reserves of Bwindi and Mgahinga are located at high altitude and the climate tends to be cold and wet. Most accommodation in this area is therefore suitable to this kind of climate, and you can expect cozy cottages with log fires. Luxury tented camps are a popular option in the savannah reserves. Camping is also an option. Aside from being the most budget-friendly option, it can be very rewarding for the more adventurous traveler.”

What can I expect from a safari in Uganda?

“Variety is key on a Uganda safari. Each park in the country offers a very different experience and set of activities. The country is immensely beautiful, with many scenic highlights and landmarks such as Murchison Falls on the Nile River in Murchison Falls National Park, the volcanoes of the Virunga Mountains in Mgahinga National Park, true rainforest in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, and a string of Rift Valley lakes in Queen Elizabeth National Park. Wildlife viewing in the savannah reserves is not as overwhelming as in some of the top safari countries, but there is a good variety of animals to be seen. Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls National Parks offer excellent boat trips to supplement the game drives. Most visitors to the country will track mountain gorillas and many will also track chimpanzees. A minimum level of fitness is required and one must be prepared for strenuous hiking on slippery mountain slopes through thick forest vegetation. The country receives quite high rainfall throughout the year, and although most rain happens in the afternoon, you might well get wet on occasion. Uganda is a top destination for slightly adventurous visitors who enjoy viewing wildlife as well as hiking.”

Uganda Tour Reviews

Uganda - tour highlights and travel tips.

A trip to Uganda takes you to a land of diverse landscape, rich wildlife, and beautiful nature.

Uganda was given the title of 'Pearl of Africa' by Winston Churchill for the simple reason that it presents some of the most unique sights in the African continent, despite its relatively small size. A nature lover’s paradise, Uganda is particularly famous as home to Lake Victoria, the largest tropical lake on the planet. The African Great Lakes also ensure the presence of all kinds of landscapes and wildlife and Mount Elgon affording those on a trip to Uganda views to die for.

The country has managed to emerge from the dark and transformed into one of the most beautiful countries of Africa. It still gets a rap for its anti-gay sentiments, but the country is still among the safest travel destinations in the continent.

Tour Highlights

  • Look for gorillas in Bwindi National Park
  • Straddle the equator in Kayabwe
  • Go white water rafting on the White Nile
  • Experience the breathtaking rapids of Bujagali Falls
  • Go chimpanzee trekking in Kibale National Park
  • Canoe from island to island across Lake Bunyonyi

Travel Tips

  • Be prepared to pay for your entry tourist visa to Uganda, which costs about USD 50. The visa can be paid upon entering the country, or online before you travel.
  • The term “mzungu” means ‘white person’, and any white-skinned visitors to Uganda should expect to hear this called out to them regularly as they roam the streets. This is not necessarily a sign of disrespect, and should be embraced!
  • Uganda is a fairly conservative country. Avoid touching members of the opposite sex in public, and women should dress modestly when holidaying in Uganda. This is especially true in busy cities.
  • Be sure to ask your doctor for malaria tablets before travelling to Uganda to avoid being exposed to the mosquito-borne disease.
  • The use of credit cards is limited in Uganda. If you’re lucky enough to find a shop that allows card payment, expect to pay a fee of around 5%. Be sure to always carry some cash, US dollars being the currency of choice.

Uganda has seasonal weather so please do check up on the  best time to visit Uganda  before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Uganda, do check out our  Uganda Travel Guide  for more information.

TO THE BEAUTY OF THE NILE

In the morning, meet your guide and give you a briefing about your trip. Then you drive through colorful markets and beautiful nature to the historic town of Jinja. Outside the town are several lodges, all of which have a beautiful view over the Nile. From here you can enjoy nature and the view, but you can also do all kinds of things here.

* 1 overnight stay is planned in Jinja. This will give you a peaceful and beautiful start to your journey and interrupt the long journey from Entebbe to Sipi Falls. You can also go horseback riding, rafting or tubing on the Nile, bungee jumping and quad biking. If you would like to do more than 1 activity in Jinja and/or want to go rafting (rafting lasts all day), we recommend that you book an extra night.

Jinja is a city in eastern Uganda and is located on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria. Before the arrival of the Europeans, Jinja was a small fishing village. In the 19th century, several explorers went in search of the sources of the Nile. In the end, it was John Hannington Speke who found them in Jinja. Today, Jinja attracts travelers who enjoy the beautiful tropical nature and the many activities that are possible.

EXCURSIONS JINJA – (OPTIONAL)

You can really do anything from your accommodation! For both the adventurer and those who prefer to take it a little easier, there is plenty of choice. Various sports can be done on the river or in the surrounding area. Highly recommended for the adventurers is rafting, because this is the ultimate place for that because of all the rapids of the Nile near Jinja. In addition, you can also choose from tubing, whitewater canoeing, mountain biking or quad-biking. Those who want to take it a little easier may want to take a nice horseback ride along the Nile, or take a village walk. Of course you can also just relax at the lodge with a view over the Nile! You can book all activities through your guide or accommodation.

RAFTING ON THE NILE IN JINJA – FULL DAY (OPTIONAL)

tour groups to uganda

You will be picked up from your accommodation and taken to the starting point of the greatest adventure on this trip, rafting on the Nile! In Jinja, the Nile shoots through the beautiful green landscape. The sounds of violently swirling water make you realize what the power of nature is. During rafting, different whitewater grades (rapids) are overcome (with rapid 5 as the highest and most extreme grade). In well-maintained inflatable boats, accompanied by a professional team, you will embark on the adventure. Although you don’t need any experience, it’s good to know that you can be thrown out of the boat. The life jacket ensures that you always come back to the surface and kayakers are present in the water to help you. Rafting on the Nile near Jinja is one of the most spectacular activities in Uganda! This activity can only be booked for adults over 16 years old.

*You book this activity at your own risk. You may have to take out an additional module with your travel insurance for this.

TO THE PARADISIACAL AND LITTLE-VISITED SIPI FALLS

In the morning you can decide (in consultation with your guide) what you want to do. You can stay a little longer in Jinja (and do another activity) and drive to Sipi Falls only after lunch. You can also leave a little earlier to have a nice coffee tour in Sipi Falls. The choice is yours.

It takes about three hours to drive to Sipi Falls, on the border of Uganda and Kenya at the foot of Mount Elgon. The waterfalls, streams, flowers, and 40 shades of green add to the feeling that the Garden of Eden was meant to look something like this. This afternoon you can do a nice coffee tour or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

tour groups to uganda

The area consists of three waterfalls and is located in eastern Uganda. The waterfalls are located on the edge of Mount Elgon National Park on the border with Kenya. The Sipi Falls and the Sipi River are named after the ‘Sep’, a native plant on the banks of the river, a medicinal plant used by the locals against measles and flu. The area is characterized by coffee plantations, rivers, waterfalls, chameleons, wild vegetation, traditional African villages and beautiful views of the Karamoja savannahs.

SIPI FALLS COFFEE TOUR – (OPTIONAL)

In Sipi Falls, fantastic Arabica coffee is grown of high quality. Many farmers with small plots of land form a cooperative. For example, their artisanal coffee beans are sold worldwide. You will experience the entire process from picking to drying, grinding with a large wooden mortar to cooking and drinking the coffee, all at the local farmer, who also gets a little extra.

ACCOMMODATION: Sipi Heritage Lodge – Banda (Full Board)

HIKING IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN (SIPI FALLS)

Today you will go for a walk through this beautiful area. You can decide how long you want to hike in consultation with your guide. If you choose the hike of about 6/7 hours, you can walk along all the waterfalls. In addition to the waterfalls, you will also walk past the coffee and banana plantations, local villages and see beautiful views. Along the way you can spot chameleons and if you bring your swimsuit and towel, you can even swim in a stream or shower under a waterfall. Whatever you choose; It’s going to be a wonderful day in paradise!

You will walk – accompanied by a local English speaking guide – through the beautiful Sipi Falls area. While strolling through this green area, you will alternate huge waterfalls with the local village life of the Ugandan countryside. You will also walk along streams and enjoy the colorful flowers and beautiful views. This is what the Garden of Eden must have looked like! During a full day of hiking, you can visit three waterfalls and spot chameleons in the coffee plantations along the way. It’s fun to swim in one of the streams and even take a refreshing shower under a waterfall. So bring your swimsuit and towel! You can also choose to walk shorter in consultation with your guide. You will be on the road all day. Along the way, you will have a local Ugandan lunch.

ACROSS CENTRAL UGANDA TO MURCHISON FALLS

Today you will drive right through the rural life of green Uganda. You will drive from the east to the west of the country, past swamps, villages and forests. If you spend the night on the south side of the Nile, your last hour of the journey will be through the park. The roof can be opened and you can spot your first safari wildlife! In the late afternoon, you will arrive at your accommodation, where you can enjoy the animal sounds around you and the beautiful views.

MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL PARK

tour groups to uganda

The Murchison Falls National Park is Uganda’s largest wildlife park and is split in two by the mighty Nile River. The landscape varies from dense rainforest in the hilly southwestern part to flat savannahs in the northwest. Murchison Falls is one of the greenest parks in Africa due to its location on the Nile. Perhaps the most impressive thing that happens to the Nile on its long journey from Lake Victoria to the Mediterranean Sea are the Murchison Falls.

BUSH CAMPING MURCHISON FALLS – (OPTIONAL)

By means of a safari you drive to the delta of Lake Albert, deep in the Murchison Falls National Park. Upon arrival, you will be amazed by the camp set up just for you in the middle of the wilderness. You won’t get any closer to nature than this ‘bush camp’. With the professional camping equipment (tent, strecht beds, bbq, table, chairs and lights) you will camp under the guidance of an armed ranger, guide and cook in the middle of the bush! There are no sanitary facilities or running water available, but the ‘ultimate bush experience’ makes up for it. In the evening by the campfire, listen to the sounds of hyenas and watch the hippos coming out of the water.

LIONS, ELEPHANTS AND HIPPOS DURING THE SAFARIS

Today is all about all the wildlife and natural beauty that the Murchison Falls National Park has to offer. In the early morning you will make a jeep safari and in the afternoon you will make a great boat safari on the Nile, looking for hippos, crocodiles, water birds and with a bit of luck even bathing elephants! At the end of the day, you will be dropped off at your overnight stop.

JEEP SAFARI MURCHISON FALLS – MORNING

The safaris in Murchison Falls focus on the area northwest of the Nile. The green, rolling landscape is dominated by the characteristic Borassus palms, whose fruits are a delicacy for the savannah elephant. In addition to elephants, you will look for Rothschild giraffes, hippos, Nile crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, several species of antelopes, and many tropical bird species. After an early breakfast, drive towards the delta area for the safari. The sun is rising and it’s still chilly, the best time for a safari across the savannah plains. Along the way, you will make a stop at the Nile, where hundreds of hippos are bathed in the sun.

BOAT SAFARI MURCHISON WATERFALL

Under the watchful eye of crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes and monkeys, you will sail slowly down the Nile. Monkeys will tell you that you are coming and waterfowl are busy fishing. Elephants and other wildlife are regularly spotted, quenching their thirst along the banks of the mighty Nile. The tour will eventually take you to the foot of the 40 meter high and famous waterfall (Murchison Falls). The trip takes about three hours. (We advise you to sit on the left side of the boat, as you will be sailing along the left bank)

PRIVATE BOAT SAFARI MURCHISON WATERFALL – AFTERNOON (OPTIONAL)

Under the watchful eye of crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes and monkeys, you will sail slowly down the Nile. Monkeys will tell you that you are coming and waterfowl are busy fishing. Elephants and other wildlife are regularly spotted, quenching their thirst along the banks of the mighty Nile. The tour will eventually take you to the foot of the 40 meter high and famous waterfall (Murchison Falls). The trip takes about three hours. You have booked this activity in a private boat. This has a huge added value compared to the large general boat, because with a small boat you get much closer to the wildlife. You also set the pace yourself and it is nice to share this experience exclusively with your own company.

ENJOY ANOTHER DAY IN UGANDA’S MOST WILDLIFE-RICH PARK

Today is also dedicated to the most wildlife-rich park in Uganda. You will undertake a jeep safari in the morning. We don’t have anything planned in the afternoon, so you can also spend an afternoon relaxing and enjoying your accommodation with swimming pool. If you prefer to stay active, you can choose to take a second boat safari. This boat safari goes to the beautiful delta area and is completely different from the first boat safari. If you choose this, you will do this in the early morning and the jeep safari will be moved to the afternoon.

MURCHISON FALLS JEEP SAFARI – SECOND MORNING

After breakfast you will drive again to the delta area for the safari. This morning is all about other safari tracks to discover even more of the park. Of course, your guide will also look for predators if they have not yet been seen during the first safari.

BOAT SAFARI DELTA LAKE ALBERT (DELTA) (OPTIONAL)

In addition to the regular boat safari to the waterfall, it is also possible to take a boat safari through the delta area in this park. The delta area is located in the part where the Victoria Nile merges into Lake Albert and then into the Albert Nile. This delta area looks like a smaller version of the famous Okavango Delta (Botswana) and is full of wildlife, such as hippos, crocodiles and bathing elephants. This boat safari is also a dream for bird lovers. Special birds such as the Saddle-billed Stork, the African Giant Kingfisher and the prehistoric-looking Shoebill Stork are regularly spotted.

PAST TEA FIELDS, CRATER LAKES AND VILLAGES TO KIBALE FOREST

After your breakfast, drive to the top of the waterfall, from which this park takes its name. You can take a beautiful walk here. Then you will drive on to Kibale Forest. You drive past villages, rainforests, tea plantations and crater lakes towards Fort Portal. On a clear day you can see the Rwenzori Mountains with its snow-capped peaks and on arrival at Kibale Forest you will find yourself in a completely different world; A monkey world!

HIKE MURCHISON WATERFALL – MORNING

At the top of the Murchison waterfall, you will take a walk to see this natural spectacle from different points. You will see the falls up close and feel the power of the Nile plunging into the depths with enormous force through a fissure barely seven meters wide. If time permits, you can walk down a bit to see the entire waterfall, a beautiful sight! Before leaving the park this morning, you will make a short photo stop at the top of the waterfall.

KIBALE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

tour groups to uganda

Kibale Forest is one of the most primate-rich rainforests in Africa. The primeval forest is home to 13 different primate species, including the red-tailed monkey, black-and-white frilled monkey, red frilled monkey, diadem monkey, mantled mangabey and the galago. The protected nature reserve is located at an average altitude of 1300 meters and is surrounded by tea plantations in the north and papyrus swamps in the south. In addition to the primate species, there are also many special bird species in the forest and swamp of Bigodi.

IN SEARCH OF CHIMPANZEES AND OTHER SPECIAL APES

Today is all about the various monkey species that live in this beautiful rainforest and adjacent swamp area. In the morning you will go on a chimpanzee trekking and in the afternoon you will take a walk through the swamps/wetlands of Bigodi. In between activities, enjoy lunch and a moment of rest at your accommodation

*The order of the activities is based on the available chimpanzee permits. So you may find that your swamp walk is in the morning and the chimpanzee trekking is in the afternoon.

CHIMPANZEE TREKKING KIBALE FOREST – MORNING

You undertake the special chimpanzee trekking. Using broken branches, droppings, food debris and sounds, you and a ranger will search for these noisy primates. It is always a question of how you will meet the chimpanzees, but face to face with a great ape that looks very much like us is a fascinating experience. This excursion takes place in the morning.

BIGODI SWAMP WALK – AFTERNOON

Today you will take a swamp walk through Bigodi Swamp, where you will look for the special giant turako in addition to several monkey species; one of Uganda’s most beautiful birds. You will make the walk in the afternoon. Then it gets cooler and you will see most of the monkey species going foraging.

HIPPOS AND BATHING ELEPHANTS DURING THE BOAT SAFARI

After your stay in the first rainforest of this trip, you will continue your journey towards the Queen Elizabeth National Park. Today you will travel through rural life, from the green hills full of tea plantations and crater lakes to the dry savannah of the Queen Elizabeth NP. Along the way you will come across several Matoke markets.

In the afternoon, you will embark on one of the most spectacular boat safaris the continent of Africa has to offer.

Please note:  In this trip, you will stay 1 night in the northern part of Queen Elizabeth NP (Kasenyi) and 1 night in the southern part of the park (Ishasha). Because there are many special activities to do in this park, you can also choose to add an extra night. You can also skip Ishasha and stay 2 nights in the north. We tailor each trip to your needs, so we organize it the way you want it.

QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

tour groups to uganda

The Queen Elizabeth National Park of almost 2000 km is located in the rift valley and borders the Rwenzori mountains to the north and Lake Edward to the west. At the heart of this nature reserve is the Kazinga Canal, which connects the Edward and George lakes. You can go on amazing boat safaris here. To the west of the Kazinga canal there is a landscape with beautiful volcanic craters. The Kyambura Gorge is a huge crack in the savannah landscape, where there is a rainforest and where chimpanzees live. The Queen Elizabeth NP is home to elephants, buffaloes, topis, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles and much more. It is home to more than 600 species of birds.

QUEEN ELIZABETH BOAT SAFARI

The Queen Elizabeth National Park is surrounded by Lake Edward and Lake George lakes. These lakes are connected by the natural Kazinga canal and are packed with wildlife! A boat trip on this canal is therefore one of the absolute highlights of your visit to the park. Rarely will you see so many hippos in one day! In addition to the hippos, you can spot huge crocodiles, bathing buffalo and a huge variety of birds. When you also see a group of elephants spraying each other with water, you know that your day has been a complete success!

QUEEN ELIZABETH PRIVATE BOAT SAFARI – AFTERNOON (OPTIONAL)

You have booked this activity in a private boat. This has a huge added value compared to the large general boat, because with a small boat you get much closer to the wildlife. You also set the pace yourself and it is nice to share this experience exclusively with your own company.

GORGE KYAMBURA TREKKING QUEEN ELIZABETH NP – (OPTIONAL)

Today you will make a truly beautiful hike through the Kyambura Gorge! The gorge is an 11 km long crack through the savannah of the Queen Elizabeth NP. Hidden in the gorge is a beautiful piece of tropical rainforest, which runs along the banks of the Kyambura River. This rainforest is home to snakes, chimpanzees and other animal species. Rangers make it a sport to spot the chimpanzees, but the chances of seeing them are about 50%. Therefore, enjoy the walk itself, because it is one of the most beautiful walks you can make in this country. It is an adventurous walk, with scrambling and climbing.

SAFARI ACTIVITIES QUEEN ELIZABETH NATIONAL PARK

In the morning you will take a jeep safari through the northern part of this park (Kasenyi). You can also (optionally) choose to book the “Lion predator tracking”.

After this safari, you will drive to the southern part of the park in about 2.5 hours; Ishasha. Here you will enjoy a well-deserved lunch at your lodge. After lunch, you will go on another safari, looking for the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha.

QUEEN ELIZABETH JEEP SAFARI – MORNING

During the safari in Queen Elizabeth, you will look for large herds of buffalo, elephants, elegant Ugandan kobs, topis, lions, leopards and hyenas. The landscape varies from grassy plains with candelabra euphorbias, crater lakes and more densely forested areas. After an early breakfast, you will drive into the rising sun during the safari. In the morning there is still fog above the savannahs and you can hear the typical sounds of the African wilderness. An ideal start to a day in nature!

PREDATOR TRACKING QUEEN ELIZABETH – MORNING (OPTIONAL)

In the morning you will make a special safari, where you will go on safari together with a biologist from the park. This biologist studies the behaviour and movements of various lion troops and a number of individual leopards. This allows you to look through the eyes of biologists and learn about the king of the savannah in a unique way! The lion troops (and leopards) are tracked by means of a radio collar, so you will hit the lions at all times. Leopards are not guaranteed. Because you go with the biologist, you can get off the roads and paths. The income from this activity is used to fund the research. This excursion takes place in the morning.

The southern part of the Queen Elizabeth National Park is Ishasha. The remote location on the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo ensures a small number of visitors, which benefits the wilderness content. The savannahs are punctuated by numerous wild fig trees used by the tree-climbing lions. The Ntungwe River flows through Ishasha where hippos live and the vegetation is lush and dense.

JEEP SAFARI ISHASHA – AFTERNOON

During the safari you will look for the tree-climbing lions, which search for the upper branches of old fig trees. Ishasha is also home to buffaloes, large groups of Ugandan kobs and lyre antelopes. In the Ntungwe River you can look for hippos. You will make the safari in the afternoon when it is still warm and the lions still inhabit the trees. When the sun goes down, return to your accommodation for a nice drink. In the evening you can enjoy a campfire with the sounds of the African wilderness in the background.

OFF TO THE FAIRYTALE LAKE MUTANDA

In the morning, you will leave the savannahs and travel to the volcanoes of southern Uganda. The ride is truly beautiful and typifies the diversity of Uganda. You’ll drive past rainforests, crater lakes and coffee plantations, and over mountains and hills, until you reach the volcanoes at the scenic Lake Mutanda. What a view!

*The luxury variant of this trip will also spend the night in the luxury cottage of the insanely beautifully situated Mutanda Lake Resort. The room is spacious and luxuriously furnished, but this is not a luxury lodge. We chose this because of the beautiful location, good service and delicious food. If you prefer more luxury, we can adjust this at any time.

* The budget variant does not sleep on Lake Mutanda, but directly on the Bwindi rainforest.

LAKE MUTANDA

tour groups to uganda

The fairytale Lake Mutanda is located in the far southwest of Uganda, at the foot of the Virunga volcano chain. This impressive volcanic chain connects the countries of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. In the vicinity of Lake Mutanda there are several rainforests, habitat of the endangered mountain gorilla. The lake is therefore an ideal base for one of the most special excursions in Uganda, the gorilla trekking. The mountain gorilla can be found in the nearby Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. However, a wide variety of animals and plants can also be found in the immediate vicinity of the lake. For example, it is possible to spot the kingfishers and the grey crowned crane. In addition to plants and birds, various species of snakes, otters, chameleons, frogs and lizards also live on the shores of the lake. In short: a large collection of special animal species.

THE GREAT GORILLA TREKKING!

In the morning you will travel to the Bwindi or Mgahinga National Park for perhaps the highlight of your trip, the gorilla trekking. In the afternoon you will enjoy this special meeting.

If you don’t go gorilla trekking, you can also do all kinds of things. The possibilities are described on day 14

BWINDI IMPENETRABLE FOREST NATIONAL PARK

tour groups to uganda

The mountain rainforest of Bwindi, together with the Virunga Mountains in Rwanda, is the most important area for gorilla trekking. The relatively small nature reserve is home to almost half of all mountain gorillas living in the wild. In addition to the mountain gorillas, there are a total of 120 species of mammals and 350 species of birds.

GORILLA TREKKING BWINDI FOREST (OPTIONAL)

During the gorilla trekking you will walk and bend through the dense forest of Bwindi. Under the guidance of the most experienced rangers of the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UWA), you will search for traces of a family of mountain gorillas. Feces, nests, gnawed bamboo stalks and broken twigs betray that we are getting close. Then, when the time comes for you to come face to face with a silverback protecting his family, observing you seemingly carelessly, you know that this is going to be an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime.

GORILLA HABITUATION DAY BWINDI FOREST (OPTIONAL)

Wild Heritage of Africa Tour and Travel offers you the opportunity to take the unique gorilla habituation day instead of gorilla trekking. During this special excursion you will join a group of researchers to experience how a gorilla family is habituated. Participants are allowed to stay with the gorilla family for up to four hours and the excursion is undertaken in a group of only four people. A special look at the habituation of the gorillas.

FREE DAY AT SCENIC LAKE MUTANDA

Today you can sleep in and enjoy a day in which everything is possible and nothing is necessary. In the lake you can swim (among the otters) and on the lake you can go supping, sailing, kayaking or take a boat trip on the motorboat. You can also choose to go hiking in the area or take a brisk hike over the volcanoes of the Mgahinga National park. You can also do a Golden Monkey draw here.

If you are not staying at Lake Mutanda, you can of course do the same activities, with the exception of the activities on and by the lake.

EXCURSIONS BWINDI & LAKE MUTANDA – (OPTIONAL)

In this green and diverse environment you can really do anything. There are several fun excursions to be undertaken on and around Lake Mutanda, such as sailing, supping or kayaking on the lake. A sundowner tour (with a drink) on the motorboat is also recommended. In the Mgahinga NP you can climb the Virunga volcanoes or do a Golden Monkey trekking and in the rainforest of Bwindi you can – in addition to gorilla trekking – also make several beautiful walks. You can also visit the Batwa pygmies or take a village tour in the area. Do you have specific interests? Let our travel specialist know your wishes.

WATER SPORTS LAKE MUTANDA – (OPTIONAL)

From Mutanda Lake Resort you can do great water sports activities. For example, you can enjoy swimming in this bilharzia-free lake or sunbathe from one of the three swimming jetties. If you want to be a little more active you can use the stand-up paddle boards, the kayaks or the laser sailboat and for a more local experience you can go canoeing in one of the dugout canoes. There is also a motorboat, with which you can take a trip on the lake to go bird watching or simply enjoy the surroundings (with a glass of wine). Whatever you choose; Enjoy the beautiful surroundings and the serenity of this fairytale lake.

ASCENT SABINYO VOLCANO, MGAHINGA – (OPTIONAL)

Who wouldn’t want to climb a volcano where you are in three countries at the same time when you are at the top?! Today you will brave the Sabinyo volcano at an altitude of 3669 meters. It can get quite muddy, which is why wooden ladders have been installed to ensure that you make an adventurous climb on the three peaks of the volcano. The walk takes an average of 8 hours. From the peaks there are beautiful views and you can see the lakes and gorges in Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

DOMESTIC FLIGHT TO ENTEBBE – BACK HOME

In the morning you will be dropped off by your driver/guide at the airstrip of Kisoro (40 min drive). Here you say goodbye to each other. From Kisoro you fly back to Entebbe, to save a drive of at least 11 hours. The flight takes about 1.5 hours and flies over Lake Mutanda, the Bwindi rainforest, the Queen Elizabeth NP and Lake Victoria (itinerary subject to change). The flight is therefore an activity in itself.

Upon arrival in Entebbe, you will be met by a driver from your accommodation. He will take you to your hotel or guesthouse, where you can stay for the rest of the day, until you are dropped off at the airport in the evening for your return flight. We have booked a guest room for you, so you can freshen up. You can also have lunch and/or dinner here (own expense).

Eco bamboo tours are outstanding. All communication with Edison (the owner) beforehand was clear and v responsive. We got a great deal with 10%off and some free upgrade accommodation as we booked so early (6 months) plus a personal tour with our guide Herbert and his amazing pop up van. They are a small, specialised, local, community based company. The company gives a percentage of profits to the community (we saw some of the water wells and benefits of this). Edison met us personally at the end for our feedback. Herbert was an outstanding tour guide. All organisation throughout was meticulous. His knowledge and passion for the job and animals shone through. Herbert was personally clearly invested in ensuring we had the best time and couldn’t do enough for us. We saw all the animals plus more we wanted including elusive hyenas and leopards on the last night time game drive. Herbert’s ability to drive through rough terrain and spot animals whilst we were standing up looking through the roof was amazing. And brilliant. Plus he answered any questions including the agriculture, people, animals, politics and more. The tour involved a huge amount of driving across Uganda with 3 different safaris, 3 treks, 2 boat drives and 1 nighttime as well as Murchison falls. All done with consummate skill and care. (15 point turn on single dirt impassable track in middle of African plains anyone?) We always felt safe and supported - particularly important as 2 women travelling together. All treks (gorilla, golden monkey, chimps and rhino) Herbert ensured we specifically knew our ranger/porter and they knew us. Ugandan people were lovely and welcoming everywhere. (Even immigration!!). Rightly proud of their country. And the animals…. We saw the big 5 plus mountain gorillas, giraffes and more. Truly an epic adventure. I would have no hesitation recommending bamboo ecotours from our experience. 10/10.

Responsive, informative and PROFESSIONAL. Lakato Safaris were unbelievable in every aspect it could not have been a better experience. Prior to arriving in Uganda I was constantly updated and all questions answered quickly. Mohammad was our driver/guide and he was incredible, he was immaculately presented, non intrusive, polite, friendly and with a soft kind nature. We arrived into Entebbe to find that our checked luggage had been lost and Lakato Safaris without prompting followed up with our airline regarding our lost luggage, this was extremely helpful as we didn’t have a Ugandan Sim card thus could not contact the airline without expensive mobile roaming charges, also with Lakato safaris doing to communicating it freed us up to enjoy Kampala/Entebbe for a couple of days. As we didn't have our luggage Lakato gave us clothes to wear (2x Polo shirts, a long sleeved button up, long pants with legs that zip off to make short and a hat) all for free. Lakato also notified us before that our luggage had arrived (before the airline) and organized to have it delivered immediately. Another example of the first class treatment we received was when one of us (75years old) tripped over and badly grazed/cut up both hands and both knees, without prompting and using initiative we were taken on a slight detour to a local hospital to get the wounds disinfected and hygienically patched before continuing onto our next destination. We felt safe and looked after at all times WOW would recommend to everyone.

7 DAYS GORILLAS, CHIMPS AND GOLDEN MONKEY SAFARI

We did get to see everything on the tour. We just wished the itenerary was more clear, driving took up 3 of our 7 days. It’s way too long to be sitting in cars for entire days. Also the car had not been maintained enough as it broke down. Plus we ran out of gas. Next was the mid-range level of hotels. We stayed at 4 hotels two which were pretty nice but the other two were quite dismal. The food was ok. Was all included but all similar food which we thought was Uganda way? Our last night we went on our own to a nice restaurant around the corner and the food was fantastic. So then I think our tour just cheaper out on food. Breakfasts at the hotels were lovely. The gorillas were amazing the absolute main feature CB of the tour
