Explore the Ruins of Pompeii

After arriving in Pompeii, you’ll breeze by the long entrance line thanks to your skip-the-line tickets. Once inside, follow your guide through the remarkable UNESCO World Heritage Site, passing by incredibly well-preserved ruins, mosaics, frescoes, and ancient artwork.

Pompeii, a once-thriving ancient Roman city, was buried and preserved under layers of ash and pumice when Mount Vesuvius erupted in AD 79. This catastrophic event resulted in the city's sudden destruction but paradoxically contributed to its exceptional preservation over centuries.

The site offers a unique glimpse into daily life in ancient Rome, frozen in time by the volcanic eruption.

Your expert guide will lead you to some of Pompeii’s most notable landmarks, including the Roman Forum and Temple of Apollo. The Roman Forum, a central hub for social, political, and economic activities, stands as one of Pompeii's key landmarks. Here, visitors can admire the remnants of public buildings, temples, and the Basilica, which served as a civic and commercial center. The Temple of Apollo, dedicated to the god of prophecy, music, and healing, is another highlight. Its well-preserved columns and architectural features provide insight into the religious practices of the time.

The city's residential areas reveal the diversity of Pompeian lifestyles, showcasing both modest and affluent homes adorned with intricate mosaics and vivid frescoes. You will be able to wander through narrow streets, explore ancient bakeries, and marvel at the advanced engineering evident in the city's water and sewage systems.

Travel Through Time and History with Your Expert Guide

One of the most poignant aspects of the Pompeii experience is the plaster casts of human figures, created by archaeologists in the 19th century. These casts capture the final moments of individuals who perished during the eruption. The emotional impact of seeing these frozen expressions and poses adds a haunting dimension to the exploration, humanizing the tragedy that befell the city.

Pompeii's archaeological site is vast and offers an immersive journey through its well-preserved ruins. The ongoing excavations and discoveries continue to enhance our understanding of ancient Roman life. Exploring Pompeii is not just a historical tour; it's a step back in time, providing a profound connection to a civilization abruptly halted by nature's fury.

After touring Pompeii, spend some time wandering around the shops and cafes just outside of the extraordinary site. Lunch is not included in the tour, so you’re free to eat wherever you’d like in the area. Your local guide will be happy to advise you on where to find the best meal!

Hike Up Mount Vesuvius

After fueling up with a filling lunch, it’s time to explore Italy’s most famous volcano! You’ll be driven 1000 meters up Mount Vesuvius, and will hike to the crater’s edge from there. The trek is about 30 minutes each way, and offers absolutely jaw-dropping views of the Bay of Naples.

While your guide will not be permitted to hike with you, you will be assigned to one of the official alpine guides in the area. These guides are true experts in the area, and will be with you throughout the hike, as they explain more about the history of Mount Vesuvius, including its devastating eruption.

Depart from Mount Vesuvius

Following your hike up Mount Vesuvius, it will be time to hop back in your cozy bus and begin your smooth return to Naples. After such an adventurous day, feel free to rest your eyes during the drive. Once you’re back in your original city, your driver will drop you off at your original meeting point in Piazza Giuseppe Garibaldi.

Tour Description

Relive the harrowing events of august 79 ad.

“ On Mount Vesuvius, broad sheets of fire and leaping flames blazed at several points, their bright glare emphasized by the darkness of night .”

That’s how Pliny the Young beautifully describes the tragic events that took place in between August 24th and 25th AD 79: even the writer’s uncle Pliny the Elder, together with thousands of other people, lost his life during those terrible moments.

The eruption lasted several hours and started pretty slowly in the morning of August 24th, AD 79. Around 9:00 AM the Pompeians started hearing a few small explosions coming from the Mount Vesuvius, which got progressively louder and more destructive over the course of the day and the night: by 8:00 PM of the next day, Pompeii was buried under 3 meters of lava , together with its unfortunate inhabitants.

Discover what daily life was like in Pompeii with our expert guide

But what was Pompeii like before the catastrophe? Interestingly enough, the city was already some 900 years old when the volcano destroyed it. Founded by the Osci people in the VIII century BC, Pompeii was probably born out of the fusion of five original villages: the name itself, in fact, very likely comes from the Oscan world “ pumpte ”, which means five. In the 3rd century BC the city was conquered by the Romans, who shaped it into a perfect roman city, complete with efficient roman roads, luxury baths, the forum, a theatre and an amphitheater for gladiatorial shows and so on.

At the time of the eruption Pompeii was a flourishing roman city, thriving on commerce and celebrated for its delicious wine and tasty olive oil. Appreciated also for its mild climate and for the proximity to the sea, Pompeii was also a popular holiday place, particularly appreciated by the families of the roman aristocracy, as witnessed by the amazing rich villas that are still preserved, embellished by magnificent and precious art.

Sealed under 3 meters of lava and pumice stone, Pompeii slept, stuck in the terrible moments of the eruption, for 1600 years: it is only in 1763 that the excavations started and, to the archaeologists’ greatest amazement, the entire city slowly emerged from the ashes, practically intact. And it isn’t quite over yet: as the excavations keep going in other areas of the site, Pompeii still keeps surprising everybody with new amazing discoveries.

Explore temples and villas, baths, bars and brothels

Explore  Pompeii with us, visit its houses, villas, shops, bars, thermal baths, market places, even brothels and discover many aspects of the roman lifestyle: take this once in a lifetime chance to see life through the eyes of a Roman , you might be surprised to discover that, even after 2000 years, people haven’t changed that much.

Every building you will be visiting will provide you with sometimes unexpected insight on a different dimension of the roman society. While in the rich houses  decorated with spectacular paintings inspired from the mythology you will learn about the Pompeians' exquisite taste for art, in the temples , some of them dedicated to foreign gods, you will find out that the Romans were very keen on adopting other peoples’ gods and rituals, thus proving a certain tolerance in the regards of other pagan cults.

Walking in the Forum of Pompeii you will learn about the political and administrative life of the city and its protagonists, senators, magistrates, plebeians and aristocrats. You will find out about the political elections and the intensive campaign in support of the different candidates, the traces of which can still be seen in the Latin graffiti on the walls: Popidium Secundum IIvirum oro vos faciatis , Vote for Popidium Secundum!

Leaving behind the official buildings of the city, you will discover yet another dimension of the Roman lifestyle: you will be amazed by the perfect engineering and functionality of the thermal baths , complete with amazing saunas with special devices to collect the steam, or the incredibly preserved cafés and restaurants , with the menu beautifully painted on the walls.

Which one of the most renowned Roman delicacies would have you ordered? Flamingo’s tongue, grilled dormouse, rotten fish sauce or boar stuffed with living mockingbirds?

Climb Mount Vesuvius and stare into the crater of Italy's deadliest volcano

At  4,203 feet in height, Mount Vesuvius is by far Italy’s most famous volcano. Considered an actual deity by the ancient inhabitants of the area, the Romans considered it as an expression of Jupiter’s destructive power, while according to other traditions, it was associated to Hercules and to the myth of the twelve labors.

While the most (sadly) famous eruption of the volcano is obviously the one that destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, the Vesuvius has erupted multiple times, the last one in 1944, but it’s far from being extinct: will you dare to climb it and look into its impressive mouth?

Join us on this incredible adventure at the discovery of history, archaeology, art, nature and so much more.

Our Driver was very hospitable on our way to Pompeii. Monica was very knowledgeable and kept us away from the crowds of people while still seeing the main sites. Once we arrived at MT Vesuvius, we were able to hike to the top. The driver was very skilled as the road is quite narrow and we felt safe as he was cautious. It was a wonderful day.

Tour description

Step back in time at pompeii, exploring the significant sites and less-visited gems in the ancient city..

There’s no better place in Italy to experience life as an ancient Roman than at Pompeii. And the best way to experience Pompeii? With an expert archaeologist guide! That's not just because your guide brings the sights to life with spine-tingling tales from Pompeii's past. It's also because the site is huge, and signs on the ruins are old, hard to read, and usually with only dull, cursory information. We’ll help you make the most of your time in ancient Rome’s best-preserved city on this in-depth experience that brings the stones and streets of Pompeii to life—covering more ground than any other guided Pompeii tour.

Get the most from your visit and understand the sights before your eyes with context from a knowledgeable guide.

Experience Pompeii without the stress of following a map and trying to decipher ruins by yourself. With an expert archaeologist on hand, you'll be taken right to the coolest sights Pompeii has to offer and truly understand what they are.

You’ll see all the most popular sites throughout your Pompeii tour, including a Roman bakery and the Roman Forum. You’ll learn what Ancient Romans ate and drank, what they did for fun and the sad, misguided beliefs they held about the cause of those ground tremors they felt before the eruption, or the frequent clouds of ash from nearby Mount Vesuvius.

But while the spaces frequented by Pompeii’s public are undeniably fascinating, so are their private homes. We’ll show you around one of the city’s most famous: the stunningly preserved House of the Vettii. Owned by two wealthy brothers, this sprawling home is an excellent living testament to Roman design at the time of Pompeii’s destruction.

Of course, you’ll visit what is, for many visitors, the most unmissable aspect of their Pompeii tour: the world-famous plaster casts of those killed in the eruption. These are eerie and moving glimpses of what it must have been like to experience Armageddon.

Another highlight of our Pompeii tour is one of the city’s beautiful theaters, which is amazingly well preserved. You can easily imagine what it was like to watch a performance here in summer on a warm Italian evening.

Tour with a Pompeii archaeologist guide handpicked for their knowledge and friendliness.

Tour operators are required to use official Pompeii tour guides at the archaeological ruins. We’ve chosen only the best of the bunch to work with, hand-picking guides with passion and knowledge—not to mention the storytelling skills required to bring this incredible city to life for you. As on all our tours, we only work with the best five-star guides, because we understand that they’re the most important element of your tour.

If you take a guided tour on only one stop of your Italy vacation, make it Pompeii. With the power to enchant and delight, Pompeii is a hieroglyphic of a site, needing an expert touch to translate. But in the hands of the right archaeologist, it truly comes to life as a living, breathing city.

Very knowledgeable tour guide with great energy and went at a perfect pace!

We did the 3 hour tour of Pompeii. Illyria was our guide and she was excellent! As an archeologist, she brought in depth knowledge to the site with charm and humour. She brought us to her favourite spots, resulting in a fascinating tour we could never have had on our own. The group was small which is ideal for a place like Pompeii. Highly recommend this City Walks tour!

Ilaria brought Pompeii to life! I had been to Pompeii once before and thought it was impressive. However, seeing it again with an archeologist as my guide, I was able to learn so much more! Ilaria was able to go into much depth about the meanings and uses behind the art and locations. She described the life of the people in a way we could see clearly. She was personable, engaging and has a wonderful sense of humor. I am so glad I booked this experience!

Visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

All you need to know to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

Visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

Many travellers to southern Italy use Sorrento as a base to visit the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These two Roman cities were buried in ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AC, and are considered among the most important archaeological sites in the world . Both were preserved in a state of "suspended animation", as the cities were suddenly frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption rather than being gradually abandoned over the centures or transformed by subsequent conquests. Pompeii was completely buried in just 12 hours, and houses, temples, baths, brothels, restaurants, and citizens were preserved under the ashes until being unearthed in 1748.

Pompeii tours from Sorrento: if you are exploring the Italian coastline south of Naples, you should definitely make time to visit these unique and unforgettable spots...after all, when will you next get the opportunity to walk the perfectly preserved streets of a Roman city or stare into the steaming crater of an active volcano?

Skip-the-line tickets for Pompeii: Buy now 1. Receive your tickets via email or text. 2. Show your tickets from your smartphone. 3. Skip the line to enter the archaeological site.

How to Reach Pompeii from Sorrento

Getting to Pompeii from Sorrento, Italy is very simple: just take the Circumvesuviana train which runs from Sorrento to Naples, and in 20 minutes you'll arrive at Pompeii . The entrance to the archaeological site is right across from the Circumvesuviana station.

How to Reach Herculaneum from Sorrento

Getting to Herculaneum from Sorrento is just as simple: take the Circumvesuviana train which runs from Sorrento to Naples and get off at Ercolano (about 40 minutes from Sorrento). Once you exit the station, follow the main road downhill about 500 meters to the entrace to the archaeological site.

Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii is a much larger site than Herculaneum and more striking, while Herculaneum is better preserved as it was covered in a layer of protective mud and volcanic ash, sealing the remains completely and preserving even materials like wood. The down side of visiting Herculaneum is that many Roman homes and buildings are closed to visitors, so if you have time to visit just one site while in the area, opt for Pompeii. Trying to see both in one day may be overwhelming! Pompeii or Herculaneum?

How to Plan Your Visit to Pompeii

It can be tiring to visit the ruins in Pompeii: the site covers 33 square kilometers, you must walk along the ancient Roman streets made of large blocks of stone, and there is little or no shaade. There are public restrooms, a café, and a number of picnic areas inside the site that are marked on the map, and you can stop there to rest and even have a small picnic.

A bottle of water (that you can refill at one of the many water fountains inside the site);

A map of the site, available free at the entrance.

Tip: choose one of the suggested itineraries to follow so you don't get lost or, better still, visit with an expert guide.

To see the major monuments in Pompeii, you will need at least 8 hours, but it will be a tiring day. Opt instead to plan on about 4 hours, and touch on just the most important sights.

Visiting Pompeii with Children If you are travelling with young children, request the keys to the Baby Points located inside the site at the entrance. These are small "stations" where you can change and feed infants, and rest for a while. Touring the site with a pushchair or stroller is difficult, so opt for a baby backpack, if possible. You can leave your stroller in the luggage check at the entrance free of charge.

Trips to Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

tour pompeii and vesuvius

Combining a stop at the top of Mount Vesuvius with a visit to Pompeii or Herculaneum is a great idea. We suggest visiting Mount Vesuvius in the morning and continuing on to Pompeii and Herculaneum in the afternoon; buses between Vesuvius and the archaeological sites run until 3 in the afternoon.

From Herculaneum to Mount Vesuvius :

Vesuvio Express Bus : departs from the Circumvesuviana train station at Herculaneum and arrives at the visitor arrival area on Vesuvius at 1,050 meters above sea level. From here, you will hike with a guide to the crater (about a 20 minute walk along an easy trail).

Departures every 40 minutes beginning at 9:30 am

Price: EUR 20 (includes bus and entrance fee to the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio)

From Pompeii to Mount Vesuvius :

Busvia del Vesuvio : departs from the Circumvesuviana train station at Pompei Villa dei Misteri and arrives at the entrance to the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio. Here passengers transfer to a small 4x4 eco-bus which continues along the historic "Matrone" road to the visitor arrival area on Vesuvius at 1,050 meters above sea level. From here, passengers hike with a guide to the crater (about a 20 minute walk along an easy trail).

Departures every hour from 9 am to 3 pm

Price: EUR 22 (bus + ecobus + entrance fee to the Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio)

Visiting Mount Vesuvius : info and tips

Lunch in a Vineyard For a lunch break between the archaeological sites and Vesuvius' crater, we recommend a stop at the Cantina del Vesuvio winery, which produces local Lacryma Christi wine. They offer winery tours and a tasting lunch each day, featuring their own wines paired with local dishes. Free pick up in Pompei. La Cantina del Vesuvio

I Visited Pompeii: How To Make The Most Of It As A First-Timer

Pompeii is one of the best peeks into ancient Rome, but there's a lot to know before planning a trip. Here's how to make the most of it.

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk a lot while visiting Pompeii.
  • A guided tour is an excellent way to learn about Pompeii; alternately, do your research ahead of time to fully appreciate the sights.
  • Consider venturing to other sites near Pompeii if visiting for multiple days.

Two years ago, I was traveling overland (and ferry) from Warsaw in Poland to Tunisia in North Africa. As I journeyed down through Italy, I couldn't help but visit Naples (originally the ancient colonial Greek city, Neopolis ). There are countless ancient Roman archeological sites in and around Naples, but arguably the most dramatic attraction is the ash-covered Roman city of Pompeii .

I have seen countless archeological sites all around the world and many ancient Roman sites and I can say that Pompeii really does live up to the hype. Here's what to know to make the most of your trip.

Pompeii Is One Of The Very Best Ancient Roman Archeological Sites

Pompeii lives up to the hype and visitors can see a well-preserved mid-sized roman city frozen in time.

The day I visited Pompeii was a stiflingly hot summer's day. But I made the most of seeing Pompeii and walked all through it. I discovered that to really explore everything in Pompeii, visitors need to spend two or three days there.

My only regret in Naples is not seeing more of the many ancient Roman and Greek attractions in the area (and spending more time in Pompeii). Still, I visited Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Archeological Museum of Naples . These are three of the top ancient ruins in and around Naples. As a minimum, tourists really should plan to visit all three of these.

Pompeii is the 'big' city preserved by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79, Herculaneum is the ancient Roman resort town (and where many of the major archeological discoveries have been made), and the Archeological Museum of Naples is where many of the recovered artifacts are on display.

When visiting the Archeological Museum of Naples, ask to see the " Secret Room " where 250 of the erotic artifacts deemed too explicit for a younger audience are on display.

Top Roman Attractions In & Around Naples:

  • Herculaneum
  • Archeological Museum of Naples
  • Baia Archaeological Park
  • Flavian Amphitheater (Pozzuoli)

The site really is massive. It was a Roman city of around 10,000 inhabitants and around two-thirds of Pompeii has been excavated (and most of that is open to the public). Some of its monuments are brilliantly preserved. The stone Amphitheater of Pompeii is the largest monument in Pompeii, and visitors are free to walk through its corridors and around its arena.

Key Attractions In The Pompeii Archeological Site:

  • Amphitheater Of Pompeii: The Oldest Stone Amphitheater
  • Theater Of Pompeii: Well-Preserved & Located In The Center
  • Villa of Mysteries: Located Just Outside The Herculaneum Gate (but within the archeological site) & Noted For Its Remarkable Frescoes
  • Forum Of Pompeii: Near The Main Entrance & Once The Heart Of The City
  • Gladiator Barracks: Believed To Be Where The Gladiators Lived & Trained
  • Lupanar: The Famous Ancient Brothel of Pompeii

In my opinion, the excellent state of preservation of Pompeii (and other Vesuvius sites) is much better than other famous sites like Ephesus in Turkey.

Pompeii Forum: What To Know About Visiting The Former Beating Heart Of The City

What to know about visiting pompeii for the first time, pompeii is easy to reach from naples, but it is a large site with plenty of walking.

The easiest way to get to Pompeii from downtown Naples is by taking the suburban train bound for Salerno (the train departs from Napoli Centrale aka the Naples Central Station). Just get off at the train stop "Pompeii" and the entrance to the archeological site is across the road.

  • Opening Hours: 9:00 am to 7:00 pm (closes 5:00 pm in winter)
  • Admission Fee: 22 Euros (about USD 24) - one day

The entry fee is approximately USD 24 for one day for the Pompeii archeological site, but it can be worth booking a multi-day entry ticket and one that includes entry to other sites (such as Stabiae and Oplontis). A great source of English language information for the Pompeii archeological site is Pompeii.org .

Take water, comfortable walking shoes, and sun protection when visiting Pompeii.

Visitors should take water with them (there are refilling stations around the site), wear walking shoes, and have protection from the sun (especially if visiting in the summer).

Villa Of The Mysteries: What To Know About One Of The Best-Preserved Roman Villas Of Pompeii

Guided tours are a great way to get introduced to pompeii (or read up in advance), guided tours are encouraged; alternatively, do plenty of research on the history and monuments of pompeii before visiting.

Most people visiting Pompeii explore by themselves on self-guided tours. But I would encourage first-time visitors to take a guided tour — just to help bring the many ancient buildings and various structures to life. Without a tour guide, many of the key historical buildings full of history and significance are just passed over as 'another' ruined building.

A tour guide can point out hidden attractions (like ancient graffiti and what it says), how the Romans lived (e.g. the ancient snack bars of the city), and why Pompeii was once thought of as a sin city (see the many brothels and erotic art in the city).

  • Guided tours can either be booked in advance or requested at the site between 9:00 am and 2:00 pm at the main entrance (near the train stop).

A compromise is to take an audio tour (available for rent) or to read extensively about ancient Pompeii before visiting. There are very few information panels explaining the significance of monuments and attractions around the ancient city.
