Trogir tourist information.

Trogir  has 2300 years of continuous urban tradition. Its culture was created under the influence of the ancient Greeks, and then the Romans, and Venetians. Trogir has a high concentration of palaces, churches, and towers, as well as a fortress on a small island, and in 1997 was inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In the 3rd century BC Tragurion was founded by Greek colonists from the island of Vis (Issa) and it developed into a major port until the Roman period. The name comes from the Greek “tragos” (male goat). The sudden prosperity of Salona deprived Trogir of its importance. During the migration of Slavs the citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir. From the 9th century on, Trogir paid tribute to Croatian rulers. The diocese of Trogir was established in the 11th century (abolished in 1828; it is now part of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Split-Makarska) and in 1107 it was chartered by the Hungarian-Croatian king Coloman, gaining thus its autonomy as a town.

In 1123 Trogir was conquered and almost completely demolished by the Saracens. However, Trogir recovered in a short period to experience powerful economic prosperity in the 12th and the 13th centuries. In 1242 King Bela IV found refuge there as he fled the Mongols. In the 13th and the 14th centuries, members of the Šubić family were most frequently elected dukes by the citizens of Trogir. In Dalmatia, the city was known as Tragur.

After the War of Chioggia between Genova and Venice, on 14 March 1381 Chioggia concluded an alliance with Zadar and Trogir against Venice, and finally Chioggia became better protected by Venice in 1412, because Šibenik then became the seat of the main customs office and the seat of the salt consumers office with a monopoly on the salt trade in Chioggia and on the whole Adriatic Sea. In 1420 began the period of a long-term Venetian rule.

On the fall of Venice in 1797, Trogir became a part of the Habsburg Empire which ruled over the city until 1918, with the exception of French occupation from 1806 to 1814. After World War I, Trogir, together with Croatia, became a part of the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs and subsequently, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. During World War II, Trogir was occupied by Italy and subsequently liberated in 1944. Since then it belonged to the second Yugoslavia, and from 1991 to Croatia.

 Trogir Now and what to do:

Trogir   is the best-preserved Romanesque-Gothic complex not only in the Adriatic, but in all of Central Europe. That is one of the reasons it is becoming more famous in the world, but not the only one. There are many more things to see and do in this area.

Trogir tourist information,  Trogir is really a place of relaxation, breathtaking views and new experiences. As opposed to many peoples opinions people are still living in the old center and there are many apartments in the center and since it’s UNESCO protected they are very authentic which means you will get the real feeling of the old town. Most of the monuments are situated in the city center but there are also many places that are not advertised. We will tell you where they are and help you find them.

You can take a guided tour there and learn all about the history and the most important places or you can also take a walk on your own. The town is very small, so I would advise you to try to get lost. It is absolutely impossible to do that but you will see many interesting things.

In town on the main square you can see domestic music where a famous local ‘klapa’ i singing the whole day. You can climb up the belfry of the cathedral and see the whole city. Also, you can get up the fortress of Kamerlengo an see the inside of the construction.

For fun there are many bars that offer a variety of music domestic and foreign. There are many beaches that you can go to and have a fun time on the beach. To those that are a bit far away to walk you can take a boat that goes regularly and is really cheap. It goes to Arbanija, Okrug, Slatine and Seget. The biggest beach on the island is in Okrug Gornji where there are often night party and concerts. In Trogir area there are often fisherman party’s in the summer with good food and music, but there are often not advertised so ask a local or us when the next one is taking place.

On February 9, 2019. I decided to visit Trogir, a small coastal town 20 kilometers away from Split . Prior to that time, I had only a small portion of knowledge about it. All I knew was the fact that Trogir was a town with an interesting Cathedral to visit. After my visit, I can say Trogir is a small UNESCO pearl which will hardly leave anyone unimpressed. Those who like sightseeing will want to return to Trogir again and again. Read our impressions from Trogir in June 2022 as well.

My starting destination was Split . I used a car as a means of transport. The journey from Split was good . There was no traffic jam, and the road was fantastic. Most of the time my driving speed was 60 - 80 km/hour. The journey took around half an hour. Even during the high season, there are no traffic jams on the route Trogir - Split due to the great two-lane road . After passing Kastela and Split Airport, there was a sign which showed Trogir. It was really easy to access and approach the town. I left my car in the first parking after the roundabout, which is less than 1 kilometre away from the old town. The parking was free because I was visiting during winter. If you plan to go for a visit during summer, there will be more cars on the road but it shouldn't make a difference. The parking price will be higher (around 0.80 euros) per hour. Parking in the centre of the town is more expensive , so I recommend avoiding it. If you plan to visit Croatia without a car, there are many bus lines from all major Croatian cities. The tickets are available online, or at the bus station.

Trogir was established by Greeks in the 3rd century BC as a colony of Vissa, under the name Tragurion. During the Roman age it was under the authority of Salona (today's Solin). Roman sources mention Trogir as a city. The first Christians arrived in the 3rd century from Solin. It is known that St. Duje, today's patron saint of Split, influenced Trogir's Christians. The first Croats arrived in the 8th century when Trogir was part of the early Croatian country. So it remained until 1102 when the Croatian country was taken over by the Hungarians. In the later Medieval period, Dalmatia and Trogir were part of the Venetian state. During the reign of Venice, the Turkish army was harassing Europe. They tried to conquer the town but never succeeded. After the dissolution of the Venetian state, the town fell under Napoleon's authority in 1806 and stayed until 1814. That period was marked by the development of education in the city. After the fall of Napoleon, Austria took over the city and stayed there until 1918, when Yugoslavia was born. Today's Trogir is part of the Republic of Croatia, and it is one of the most favourite tourist destinations among local and foreign visitors since it features beautiful architecture.

The most amazing place in Trogir is the main square, surrounded by The Cathedral of St. Lawrence , the Church of Blessed Virgin Marry, the City Lodge, and the City Hall. Its atmosphere is comparable to the most beautiful world squares.

One of the first buildings you will notice is The Cathedral of St. Lawrence . It is a UNESCO protected Gothic masterpiece of art. There are a few points of visitor's interest related to the Cathedral: the Cathedral Portal (entrance), bell tower, the Cathedral interior, and treasury .

The most important cultural attraction of the cathedral is Portal (main entrance), made by Radovan in the 13th century. It is considered to be a masterpiece of Gothic art. Even if you are not an expert in art, you will enjoy the view of the Portal.

Most of the paintings located inside the Cathedral originate from later periods, Renaissance and Baroque.

The price for climbing the bell tower is 2 euros. It took me five minutes to climb to the top. I had a nice view of Trogir and Čiovo .

The City Lodge, located opposite the Cathedral, used to be a public courtroom. It is notable for its 6 pillars decorated with capitals and two reliefs carved into the wall. Unfortunately, during summer you can't clearly see the pillars since there is a coffee bar just nearby. But what you can see clearly is a relief called The Relief of Justice made by Nicholas Florentino. Its located inside the Lodge, on the east wall. It displays a blindfolded woman caring a weighing scale, which is a sign of justice. Above the woman there is inscription Pro Aequitate , Latin expression which means "for equity". The second sculpture, made by Ivan Meštrović, is dedicated to Croatian bishop Petar Berislavic.

Just near the Lodge, there is St. Sebastian's church with the clock tower. At the entrance to the church, there are two sculptures: one depicts St. Sebastian the Martyr, and the other depicts Christ. It's worth mentioning a museum of sacral art near the church.

The next building surrounding the main square is the old City Hall . It is a combination of various artistic styles. Today it's the location of the tourist board office.

Trogir features many interesting palaces of noble families. Cipko Palace stands out the most among them. It's the Reinnesance building located opposite the Cathedral, on the western side.

After visiting the impressive main square, it was time to take a walk on Riva . The atmosphere on Riva is relaxed, with locals and visitors sitting in coffee bars and enjoying the sun. I felt the same atmosphere as in Split, Sibenik and other ancient coastal towns in Croatia. There are numerous tourist agencies organizing tours to nearby islands Brac , Hvar , Korcula, Bisevo etc. Some of them are available to reserve online.

The second most famous cultural attraction is Fortress Kamerlengo . It was built by Venice in the 15th century for defence against the Osman Empire. Venice, which at that time had the rule over most of the Dalmatian coast, built similar fortresses in other towns. Especially featured are Sibenik fortresses . The fortress is trapeze-shaped with four towers at its angles. Unfortunately, I couldn't enter the fortress because it was closed. Visitors can enter inside only during summer. I returned to Trogir on August 27, 2019. The fortress was opened. I paid 25 kunas (around 3.5 euros) for entering the fortress. The climbing took around 10 minutes. The stairs were a little tough at the times (I recommend not wearing flip-flops while climbing the fortress), but it was worth the effort and money. The view from the top of the fortress was amazing. I could see how beautiful Trogir is.

The city museum is located close to the Cathedral. It features features archaeological remains from all ages . The earliest exhibits are from the Greek (Hellenic) period. The exhibition of the museum takes place in several rooms. One of them is dedicated to the modern art of the 20th century. You can see amazing pieces of art made by oil painting on canvas. The second room features stone works mostly from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. There you can see how did the living room of a rich noble family from Trogir look like in the 17th century.

St. Dominic's church, located near fortress Kamerlengo, is another gothic masterpiece of art. The main portal features a tympanum which depicts Our Lady, St. Mary Magdalen, and St. Augustine.

Baroque lunette on the church of St. Peter was built by Nikola Firentinac, a famous architect and sculptor who also participated in the construction of Sibenik Cathedral .

There are many other buildings, churches and sculptures located in Trogir. I let you explore them by yourself, and enjoy the atmosphere of this amazing UNESCO city.

Čiovo is an island located just near Trogir. It features nice apartments, beaches and restaurants. There are two bridges connecting the island with the land. One of them is occasionally closed due to the passage of ships. Find updated info about events and tourist offer of the town on Trogir's tourist board website .

The top-of-mind excursion is a visit to Split and its Diocletian Palace . You will have a chance to see and enjoy Split Peristyle , one of the most authentic monuments from ancient Rome. Dragon's Eye Lake is an interesting natural phenomenon that can be seen in the nearby town called Rogoznica. It will take half an hour to reach the spot from Trogir by car. Primosten is a charming picturesque town with preserved Mediterranean culture. There you can taste one of the best red wines in Croatia called Babic and homemade olive oil of the highest quality. The defense wall in Grebastica is an interesting site from the 15th century, built by Venice, for the purpose of defense against the Ottoman Empire. You can leave your car in a village called Galesnica, and walk to the site. Sibenik has a magnificent fortification system, which is gaining popularity in 2022, after the reconstruction of the St. John's fortress. There you will have a chance to explore the most imposing gothic-renaissance building in Croatia, the Cathedral of St. James . It will take you one hour to reach the town from Trogir. Islands Brac, Hvar and Vis can be visited via organized tours that have a starting point at Trogir's Riva. The most popular one is the five island hopping tour, which includes a visit to Blue Cave at Bisevo.

The most impressive accommodation place is Villa Royal , located 1 kilometre away from the old town. Although it's a luxury building with a swimming pool and a view of the sea, the price for a two-person room is less than 150 euros/night.

Tourist destination info Trogir

Trogir is a town situated on the Kaštela Bay coast between the island of Čiovo and the mainland. This is a historic town in the truest sense of the word. Rich in cultural and historical monuments, authentic architecture and beautiful streets are the reason it is called "Little Venice" and added to the UNESCO list of world heritage. Trogir offers you the opportunity to explore its richly layered heritage: the northern gate, Garagnin (City Museum), the main town square (city hall, the Rector's Palace, the church of St. John the Baptist, the church of St. Sebastian), Radovan's portal, the Ćipiko place, the cathedral of St. Lawrence, a monastery and church of St. Dominic and many other cultural monuments. The old town center lies on an island situated between the island of Čiovo and the mainland: it is connected to the mainland by a stone bridge and to the island of Čiovo by a drawbridge. Trogir is surrounded by lush green vegetation, the islands and rocky and sandy beaches of which the most famous are the Pantan beach, the Okrug beach (Okrug) & the Coffee beach (Slatina). Sports lovers can try their hand at tennis, bowling, surfing and diving school. Fishing nights, folklore performances and concerts of classical music are organized during the summer. The town has its own marina, Marina ACI Trogir, which has 200 berths and 80 boat places on land.

Did you know? Trogir is named after the goats. Tragos is a Greek word for goat. When the Greeks arrived in the 3rd and 4th century they saw a herd of goats on the hills surrounding the town and so the name Tragos remained.

Be sure to visit

City gates and walls: a great part of the wall remains on the coastal side of Trogir, along with two towers dating from the 13th century. Between the two towers is a door leading to the sea coast and it is assumed that they are the work of Trifun Bokanić. Next to the doors is the lodge – porch, used today as a souvenir market, built in the early 16th century. The north gate was built around the year1656 in the Baroque style. Perched above the door is a Gothic statue from the 15th century, which depicts the patron saint of Trogir, the blessed bishop John.

Ćipiko palace: there are two Ćipiko palaces, a large and a small, which were created by linking several Romanesque buildings. The facade of the larger palace is decorated with a  Gothic triforium window, the work of Andrija Aleši and a door carved by John Duknović.

Cathedral of St. Lawrence: This is a building which mixes the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. It contains valuable works of art such as: the lobby and the baptistery from the 15th century, Radovan's portal from the year 1240, the bell tower (a mixture of Gothic and mannerism), the chapel of Blessed John and carved wooden choir stalls from the 15th century and the sacristy of the cathedral-treasury.

Garagnin - Fanfogna Palace/ Town Museum: a mix of Romanesque to Baroque styles. Once a residential-economic complex, today it houses a Garagnin – Fanfogna library from the 18/19 century, a Lapidary (a collection of stone fragments and sculptures from Antiquity to the Baroque) and a photo gallery Cate Dujšin - Ribar.

Main square: there are many historical landmarks in this square, such as the City Hall (Dukes Palace), St. John the Baptist’s church, St. Mary’s church, church of St. Sebastian and church of St. Barbara (St. Martin).

Entertainment:

Trogir Cultural Summer – various events take place throughout the summer: musical evenings (classical music concerts and performances by entertainers from the country and abroad, chamber music), folklore theatrical staging events in the authentic atmosphere of the old town, folk festivals: Fishermen's Night, Day of Trogir, exhibitions of local and foreign artists inside the Modern Art Gallery.

Reissue Policy Information

American Airlines will waive change fees and travel agents may rebook and reissue tickets provided the below guidelines are met and applied:

• Ticket issued on the following ticket stock: AA 001, AY 105, BA 125, El053, IB 075, JL 131, QF 081
• Applies to AA*/ one world flights
• Travel has not commenced on the affected flight segment and the ticket has not been reissued by American Airlines
• The first departure flight is more than 2 hours away
• Affected coupons are in OK status
• Travel reissuance only in accordance to dates identified in the applicable Travel Notice Exception Advisory
• More than one change allowed without an additional collection, including penalty or change fee within the Travel Notice dates
• Original issuing agency responsible for ticket reissue
• Ticket Revalidation not permitted
• The return travel must be booked in the original class of service (inventory)
• Refer to Extend Travel Rebooking after the Travel Event
• Basic Economy must be rebooked in the appropriate Basic Economy inventory
• Please ensure the above procedures are accurately followed to prevent debit memo issuance

Rebooking - Exception to Fare Rules

Exception to Fare Rules: All fare rules apply with the exception of the following:

• Advance Purchase requirement waived
• Minimum/Maximum Stay requirement waived
• Change Fee waived
• When changes to the outbound travel occur, the unaffected return date may be changed to protect the original length of the trip. The return travel must be booked in the original class of service (inventory).

Extend Travel Rebooking Guidelines

If customers are unable to rebook within the New Travel Dates, may reschedule their reservation to/from the same city or alternate cities and reissue their ticket with the below guidelines:

• Cancel their itinerary and apply the value of the original ticket towards the purchase of a new ticket for travel commencing within 1 year from the date of original issuance
• Change fee only is waived as long as the original ticket is reissued within ticket validity and the impact dates are in accordance with those identified in the Travel Notice
• Basic Economy fares may only be used towards the purchase of other Basic Economy fares.
• Residual MCO's are not allowed when using the TNADVE waiver code for reissue.
• Extend Travel Rebooking does not apply to tickets in conjunction with Instant Upsell (IU)

Refund Policy Information

When the flight is cancelled or the length of delay is 91+ minutes , travel agents may refund ticket(s) through normal GDS/ARC/BSP processing. Refer to our Schedule Irregularity policy for delays 90 minutes or less.

• Refund To Original Form Of Payment - All penalties/fees waived
• Non-Refundable Fare
• Refundable Fare with cancellation Fee
• Basic Economy Fare
• Bulk/Opaque Fare

Note: If the ticket has been exchanged by American as an INVOL submit the refund request directly with American. Refer to American Airlines Refunds .

When the flight is not cancelled or the length of delay is 90 minutes or less , a refund does not apply:

• If customer elects to cancel their reservation and use the value of the ticket toward the purchase of a new ticket outside the Travel Notice dates; may use Extend Travel Rebooking or may hold ticket for future travel; all rules and restrictions apply.
• Travel must commence no later than one year from the date of original issuance.

En route/Diversion

• Connecting customers' en route to one of the above-listed destinations or whose flights are diverted will have the option to return to their original departure city and rebook travel to alternate future dates.
• Customers should work directly with the airport to obtain a boarding pass for return travel to their original departure city. If the customer wishes to rebook travel to alternate future dates, please contact American Airlines Reservations for assistance. Alternatively, they may receive a refund if re-accommodation options are unacceptable.
• If a ticket has already been reissued by American Airlines or the ticket is partially used, travel agents must submit the refund request online at https://prefunds.aa.com/refunds/
