Are you a band , musician or a musician’s manager planning to book a tour with your band?
Here re some tips and tricks on how to book tours.
If yes, and especially if this is your first time, then you might be thinking of how to go about it .
That is not unusual, especially in today’s music industry where musicians have to do so much to advance their careers .
Those who have toured places with their bands know that the whole process is not as easy as many would want to think.
The first rule on how to book a tour: you have to expect the unexpected , and you have to be prepared for anything .
Lack of enough finances can be just one of the things you will be dealing with and will be forced to spend nights in dingy places that you would otherwise avoid.
But the secret to reducing the stress of touring with your band is to plan it earlier .
This post looks at tour booking for a music band.
Preparing for a band tour
For a long time you have been playing your music locally with your band , and now you want to start touring various places.
Before you start to think of how to book a tour, you first need to be well prepared for it.
Below are some of the things you need to do as preparation for a band tour.
Daniel Means/ Flickr
Get enough experience from your hometown
Credibility and expertise are two key things that any band must have if they want to start touring various regions.
Without them, it is highly unlikely that any event organizer will even consider booking you.
You need to start playing music within your local hometown .
Local gigs are the best place to start , given that you will probably be entertaining people that already know about you.
It is in your hometown that you can get a chance to create the experience and credibility that you will need during national and international tours.
If you are new in the music industry and you don’t know how to book a tour, try to get as many local performances as you can , as this will build your confidence while on the stage as well as create more awareness about your music.
Create more awareness through press and media outlets
Another way to create awareness for your music is through press releases as well as media outlets.
You can start by asking for blogs , streaming services or local radios to play some of your music, especially during prime hours, when most of your audience is listening.
Step-by-step guide on how to prepare for the band tour
Step 1: decide on the date.
Booking a tour is not a mean job; it requires a lot of effort .
After being confident that you are ready for a tour, you will have to sit down and plan for it .
The first thing you will need to set is the date range; when do you want to tour?
Knowing the date that your tours will commence is crucial as it will help you prepare for it well in advance.
Note that booking a tour is tedious, and a time-frame of between 4-6 months will be reasonable.
Booking way ahead is essential as you will need time for contacting people, do follow-up work, and other related activities.
Also, there are those venues that you will have to book at least six months earlier .
Step 2: Decide on the tour route
The next thing that you need to decide on how to book a tour is the direction that you would like to go to .
This can be a tentative route, as you might want to make some adjustments later .
There are those cities that you will need to work extra hard for you to get a booking, while others might be a little easier.
When you choose the cities to play, sometimes big cities and capital cities look more attractive in the organizers’ minds, but there is a lot more competition there.
I t’s harder to book shows there and attract a huge crowd there : a lot of shows around and maybe some other more prominent bands are playing that night.
Often shows in small cities, colleges, private parties are the most exciting and fun , even you would not quote them as good on paper.
So much less competition , friendly people usually and you can be the guest star for one night and connect with other local musicians, promoters and venue owners.
After knowing everyone next time it will be easier to book another show at the same venue.
In choosing the route, you will also want to be sure of the distance that you will want to be driving per day .
The distance that you will cover will highly depend on the size of the city .
Smaller cities can be covered even within a day, but bigger ones will need more time.
If you need some days off , you can incorporate them as well.
Step 3: Contact venues or find the right local promoters
The next thing you need to do is to start contacting the venues where you will be performing.
Usually, you need to focus more on the venues that are found along your route, and only go for those outside the way if necessary.
You can find contacts for some of the venues online on websites for free.
Buying the details of these venues from reliable sources can also be the right way of getting contacts from the venues for you to book.
A mistake that most musicians do when contacting venues is to come up with one generic message and then send it to several venues .
Generic messages usually end up as spam , and thus you might end up getting minimal responses.
It’s fundamental that you also try to interact with local promoters.
Local promoters are usually the one that knows what the right venues for your kind of music are and they also know if you should use on or another Facebook group and to reach out to the right people.
At the same time, in your message, don’t try to answer the questions that might be on the mind of those who will be reading the messages.
Questions like “How will you make your money?” are irrelevant.

Step 4: Do a follow-up on the venues
When you find out how to book a tour, you need to follow-up on the venues you had booked.
This is important because some promoters usually change their minds of the location may be due to changes in the routes .
It might, therefore, work in your best interest if you contacted the venues and confirmed the dates of your booking.
Important tip:
As a follow-up, you can also ask the venues if there is anything they need from you, things like posters and other promotional materials , or your stage plan .
Step 5: Have a back-up plan
The chances are that your original plan may not go as smoothly as you had planned when you decide how to book a tour .
Maybe a venue you had already booked will cancel the performance, or perhaps the local authorities will have issues with your performance.
Whatever the reason, you need to have a back-up plan that will help you save the situation.
Touring a city with your band is expensive , and failing to perform even on a single day will make the whole book tour a loss on your side.
If a show you had planned fails to take place , you need to think of nearby towns where you can perform quickly .
Places like Craiglist, Yelp , and Google are some of the best places to find venues for your plan B.
Booking a tour for a band takes a lot of time, and without patience, you will end up not getting any booking.
As a musician, you need to invest a lot of time from your end for the tour to be successful .
You will need to be contacting venues from time to time, make follow-ups, save money for the event, research on the venues, and all that.
But the hard work is just at the beginning .
As you start touring many places consistently, you will be able to build relationships with promoters , and you will then not need to work so hard to get bookings.

Tyler, The Creator
I have been a fan of Tyler for a long time, as well as the whole group of OFWGKTA, and seeing him live was something I had on my bucket list. I went in with high expectations for his show, already knowing of how much energy and enthusiasm he puts into his live performances. What I got at The Forum went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. The crowd was amazing, knowing every song and shouting and yelling along with unrivaled amounts of energy. Tyler was just as, or even more, energetic and knew how to work the crowd perfectly by interaction, be it between moments talking about random things or talking about his music and singing. I was blown away by the fact that at least twice he called to stop the song just to start it again because he loved how into it the crowd was and wanted to see it again. Of course we, the crowd, loved it and drained our lungs out with every lyric. I've seen the Arctic Monkeys, Sleigh Bells, Banks, Pendulum, Wolf Alice and others and can honestly say Tyler was the best overall. Everyone exited the venue with shirts soaked in sweat and with cracking voices, with grins on their face from having experienced something they'd never forget. If you like Tyler, or by extension OFWGKTA, you have to see him live if you get the opportunity, you can never anticipate how godly his live performances will be. I will definitely be waiting for his next visit to see him again.
What can I say? This woman is simply a force of nature. Her sheer energy just washes over the crowd. So much positivity, and talent! That voice, the moves, the smile. Do yourself a favor and go see her show!
The. Best. Night. Of. My. Entire. Life. This was the second time for me to see Adele. Last time I was quite high up, this time I was in Golden Circle. The atmosphere was incredible, Adele made me feel like I was the only one there in a packed out stadium. The banter she has with her audience in hilarious, she includes everyone and t feels like you're hanging out with your best mate you've known for years. As for her songs, the emotion and passion she sings with is just so raw and heart warming, I cried so many tears. You can tell she has an absolute ball on stage and she has so many upbeat songs and the sass she has is unreal- it cracks me up every time! I feel so grateful to have been apart of this tour and so happy that Adele decided to share this experience with every single one of us. I hope she has the most relaxing break with her family and hope she knows we'll always be here for her whenever/ if she decides to come back. Xx
The War on Drugs
Grace is a highly underrated quality for a rock band to possess. When compared to other, more universal assets like rawness, volume and ability it might seem a little forgettable, but a band playing to the absolute best of their ability and making it look as natural as breathing can be the genesis of some truly unforgettable moments of live music. Not one band that I’ve seen sums this sight up as well as Philadelphia indie rockers The War on Drugs, and when it comes to their sold out show at the Koko, Camden’s most ornate venue, most traditional phrases describing a well played gig seem too violent to sum it up. They didn’t “smash it”, they didn’t “blow the roof off”, they didn’t “destroy the place”, they were far better than that. Make no mistake, Adam Granduciel and co played up a storm, their psychedelia inflected country-rock filling every inch of this beautiful venue but the atmosphere was unlike any gig I’ve been to in a very long time. The crowd lost themselves in the music in a way that didn’t lead to mindless moshing and crowd-surfing, the 1400 people were enraptured, moved by the music, not to the music. It was an experience as beautiful as it was exciting and anyone with a passing interest in this life affirming lunacy we call Rock and Roll should seek it out as soon as possible.
Maggie Rogers
I'm so glad I got to see her in a small venue; what a magical and powerful experience. This girl radiates happiness and joy and on top of all of that, she sounds great live! There was confetti, a disco ball, Neil Young, and lots of dancing. I don't think it would have had the same effect in a large or open space, definitely jump on any chance you have to see her before she really blows up! So much love!
Moses Sumney
Moses was amazing. Very enigmatic but still approachable, and he had a lot of fun with the crowd. The performance was incredible, his voice is truly something to behold. I've listened to "Worth It" a million times but still got chills when he hit the high note. Would highly recommend seeing Moses live, especially before he gets really famous and expensive to see.

Just a Few of the Biggest Concert Tours of 2024, from Olivia Rodrigo to Bad Bunny
Posted: April 22, 2024 | Last updated: April 22, 2024
Listening to your favorite musician at home is fun, but there's nothing quite like the experience of singing along with them, and tons of more fans, live. And as luck would have it, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for some of the world's top musical acts, so chances are your favorite performer might be stopping at a city near you soon.
Ahead, we rounded up some of the biggest concert tours of 2024, ranging from Taylor Swift's mega-popular Eras Tour to Drake and J. Cole's exciting It's All A Blur Tour - Big as the What?—set to kick off this winter. You can also expect tour dates from classic icons like Stevie Nicks, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, and more.
1) Taylor Swift
Undoubtedly one of the biggest concert tours ever, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will continue right through 2024. The international leg of the tour kicked off in Japan, where she played four shows in Tokyo. She'll also stop in Melbourne, Singapore, Paris, Madrid, London, Milan, and more before returning to the States to play in the fall.
There's nothing like seeing T. Swift IRL, but don't fret if you're unable to nab tickets—the Eras Tour movie is now available to stream from the comfort of your home.
2) Olivia Rodrigo
This is not a drill—"Drivers License" singer Olivia Rodrigo will be hitting the road on tour starting at the end of February. The Guts World Tour runs from February through mid-August and has dates in Nashville, Toronto, Chicago, and New York City, among others. Even cooler? Rodrigo will have a stacked list of special guests—like PinkPantheress, Remi Wolf, The Breeders, and Chappell Roan—with her.
3) Red Hot Chili Peppers
Did you hear the good news? The Red Hot Chili Peppers have extended their global tour through summer 2024. The buzzy stadium tour, which kicked off in June 2022, will now run until July 2024 and bring the California-based band to places like Los Angeles, Tampa, Toronto, and Salt Lake City.
4) Bad Bunny
It's fitting that "Monaco" rapper Bad Bunny titled his tour Most Wanted —it's slated to be one of the year's hottest tours. Planned to help promote his latest studio album, Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana , Most Wanted will kick off in Salt Lake City on February 21 and run through May 26.
5) Billy Joel
If you haven't yet seen Billy Joel perform live, there's still time! The Piano Man has added more tour dates to his schedule, stopping in cities like Tampa, New York, Denver, and St. Louis this year. Even more exciting? He'll share the stage with fellow iconic performers Sting and Stevie Nicks for some of these dates.
Mitski recently announced that she's expanding her North American tour dates , and we couldn't be more excited. The months-long tour, which supports her 2023 studio album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, has a long list of stops, including Miami Beach, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Paris.
There's nothing quite like a Madonna concert, that's for sure. The singer's Celebration Tour , which started last October, continues straight through the spring with dates in Seattle, San Francisco, Mexico City, and more. Besides her eye-catching sets, chart-topping songs, and impressive choreography, concertgoers also get a glimpse of the performer's fantastic costumes, which include looks from Versace and Jean Paul Gaultier.
8) Bleachers
The New Jersey-founded rock band, which is fronted by Jack Antonoff—known for producing albums for top acts like Taylor Swift, Lorde, and Lana Del Rey—not only has announced a new album but a new tour , too. The tour will start in the UK in March, ending fittingly in the band's home state of New Jersey in mid-June. Check out their newly released music video for "Tiny Moves" if you need a Bleachers fix in the meantime.
9) Nicki Minaj
Nicki fans rejoice: the rapper and singer might be coming to a city near you soon as part of her Pink Friday 2 World Tour. The massive tour will include performances in Brooklyn, Oakland, and Baltimore, with stops at Dreamville Festival and Rolling Loud California along the way.
10) Blink 182
Live out all of your nineties and early aughts pop-punk dreams with one of Blink 182's One More Time Tour dates. The tour, which supports the band's ninth studio album, One More Time..., will bring the trio to cities all over the globe, including Sydney, Santiago, Portland, and Boston. The tour's supporting act is Pierce the Veil, which is also worth checking out.
11) Stevie Nicks
The oh-so-magical Stevie Nicks continues her touring streak with a bunch of 2024 concert dates . Set to begin in Atlantic City, NJ on February 10, Nicks will visit a dozen cities throughout the U.S. this year, such as New Orleans, Omaha, and Chicago. "Let's keep this party going in 2024," the singer-songwriter posted on her Instagram in September to announce the newly added tour dates.
12) The 1975
The 1975 is showing no signs of slowing down. The British band, famous for hits like "Somebody Else" and "Robbers," has extended their 2023 tour through 2024. Titled Still...At Their Very Best , the 22-date tour will open in Glasgow on February 8 and conclude in Amsterdam on March 24.
13) Drake and J. Cole
Rap greats Drake and J. Cole come together for the It's All a Blur Tour – Big As the What? which is guaranteed to be a good time. Drake, fresh off his 2023 It's All a Blur tour with 21 Savage, is set to hit dozens of cities starting in February, many of which J. Cole will also be in tow for. Scoop up tickets ASAP, as Drake's shows are known to sell out.
14) Janet Jackson
Superstar Janet Jackson is also extending her 2023 tour, Together Again , into 2024 with dates in Anaheim, Austin, New Orleans, and Hartford. Even cooler? Jackson's supporting act is the 2000s southern rap legend Nelly.
15) Rolling Stones
If you've ever dreamed of seeing the Rolling Stones perform live in person, now's your chance. The iconic rockers, who released their studio album Hackney Diamonds this past fall, are returning on the road for a 16-date tour with shows throughout the United States and Canada. Concertgoers can expect a mix of new tunes and Stones classics.
16) Bruce Springsteen
Famous for countless listenable hits like "Born to Run" and "Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen is set to embark on a massive world tour this year with his band, The E Street Band. The much-anticipated tour will take the Boss and his crew to cities such as Phoenix, San Diego, Dublin, and Madrid, from March through November.
17) John Mayer
Be sure to catch John Mayer's solo tour this year, which will bring the guitarist and crooner to cities throughout Europe. This leg, an extension of his popular 2023 solo tour, will kick off in Stockholm on March 13 and finish in Dublin on March 29.
18) Shania Twain
Okay, this one is technically a residency , but we're excited nonetheless. Shania Twain, most known for her incredible outfits (her hooded leopard print look, anyone?) and hits like "Man! I Feel Like a Woman!" is setting up shop in Vegas starting May 10. Twain's residency will take place at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood on and off throughout December 2024.
All good things must come to an end. The Eagles, known for "Hotel California" and other amazing rock songs, began their final concert tour this winter. It launched in Phoenix on January 20, with March 16 as its last date in the United States. Eagles fans won't want to miss this one.
20) Alanis Morisette: The Triple Moon Tour
Alanis Morisette joins forces with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts for their 2024 Triple Moon Tour , which has dates in North America and Canada. This tour is a great one to catch this summer, as it's slated to run from June through August.
