Thanumalayan or Sthanumalayan is a Hindu temple dedicated to the three Gods Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. The temple is one of the prominent religious places to see in Kanyakumari. Bhagavathy amman temple.

Bhagavathy Amman Temple is a 3000 years old temple dedicated to the Goddess Kanyakumari Amman. Visit Vivekananda Rock Memorial

Revered Indian poet and Hindu philosopher Swami Vivekananda visited Kanyakumari in 1892, towards the end of an extensive trip across India as a wandering monk. His transformation into an influential leader and reformer is attributed to the three days he spent meditating on a large offshore rock, where Goddess Kanya Kumari is said to have carried out part of her penance by standing on one foot. According to ancient Hindu texts, the Puranas , the rock was blessed by the touch of her foot.

A memorial was built on the rock in 1970 to honor Swami Vivekananda. It consists of a pavilion with a life-size bronze statue of Swami, a hall with information about his life, and a meditation area. There's also a carving of the Goddess' foot on the rock.

About 15 minutes north of Kanyakumari, the 18th-century Vattakottai Fort dates back to the rule of the Venad kings of Travancore who developed the area as a coastal military base. It was the last seaside fort they built and it is now being maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India. The fort provides fantastic views of the Bay of Bengal and the Western Ghats, making it a good spot for photography. There are no entry fees to visit.

About an hour northwest of Kanyakumari, the town of Padmanabhapuram is a popular day trip with regal heritage. It was once the capital of the princely state of Travancore before the king relocated the capital to Trivandrum (now the capital of Kerala) in 1795. The main attraction is Padmanabhapuram Palace, which dates back to 1600. The largest wooden palace in Asia, it boasts admirable craftsmanship and architecture—particularly with the detailed woodwork on the walls and ceilings. The palace complex includes a museum and is spread out over more than six acres within a fort.

Be Dazzled at Thovalai Flower Market

You probably wouldn't expect one of Asia's largest wholesale flower markets to be in a village 30 minutes north of Kanyakumari. The area around Thovalai specializes in growing flowers, particularly an unusual variety of jasmine, and the market there brims with piles of scented buds. Vibrant roses and marigolds add to the colorful spectacle. The market opens before sunrise, so plan to get there early before all the best flowers are gone.

Drive Through One of the World's Largest Wind Farms

If you're interested in renewable energy, you can combine a trip to the Thovalai flower market with a drive through Muppandal Wind Farm by continuing about 15 minutes further along National Highway 944. Notably, it's one of the largest onshore wind farms in the world and India's biggest source of wind energy.

Its motley assembly of more than 3,000 turbines stretches for miles, curiously intermingled with palm trees and banana plants. The farm produces 1,500 megawatts of power in total; to put that into perspective, a single 2-megawatt wind turbine can power 400 houses. The fact that the turbines are sponsored and commissioned by private companies accounts for the lack of uniformity in their design.

The town of Kanyakumari is named after the Hindu Goddess Kanya Kumari, an incarnation of the divine Mother Goddess. A popular pilgrimage destination, devotees travel to Kanyakumari to make an offering at the Bhagavati Kumari Amman temple, which is dedicated to the virgin Goddess. Kanyakumari is also famous for being the southernmost point in India.

The best time to visit Kanyakumari is from October to March, when average highs are around 89 degrees F and average lows are around 63 degrees F. October is a particularly popular month to visit thanks to the three-day Cape Festival. In addition to hosting cultural programs like traditional dances, the festival invites people to take a holy dip in the Triveni Sangam, where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea, and the Indian Ocean meet.

Southern coastal areas face the seasonal phenomenon of ‘Kallakkadal’, threatening lives, fishing and tourism

The word kallakkadal means ‘a sea that comes suddenly like a thief’. the word is derived by combining two malayalam words: ‘kallan’ (thief) and ‘kadal’ (sea)..

On the afternoon of May 6, five doctors washed away while bathing at Lemur beach in Kanyakumari on the southernmost edge of the country. The doctors from Trichy in central Tamil Nadu were on vacation in Kanyakumari when tragedy struck.

Even though fishermen in the area heard the rumbling noise of the wave and rushed to help the 12-person team, they could only save seven; the five bodies were recovered from the turbulent water hours later.

In another incident, 42-year-old Premadas from Puthukadai, close to Kanyakumari, took his daughter Athisha (7) to Thengapattinam beach on the border with Kerala on May 5. They were relaxing on the beach when a sudden wave swept them away into the sea. Local fishermen managed to save Premadas but Athisha drowned; her body was found the next day.

They were caught unawares by the phenomenon known as ‘Kallakkadal’ or a sudden sea surge in the form of big waves that form and break on the nearest beach.

The Kanyakumari district administration said that at least eight people have died on local beaches in the last five days because of the Kallakadal phenomenon.

The word Kallakkadal means “a sea that comes suddenly like a thief.” The word is derived by combining two Malayalam words: " Kallan " (which means thief) and " Kadal " (which means sea).

Extensive damage caused by Kallakkadal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) often issue warnings about the phenomenon that affects the southern Indian coasts.

The waves make it very hard for people to make a living along the southern coasts of both Kerala and Tamil Nadu. In fact, the beaches of Kanyakumari, Kovalam, Vizhinjam, Srivaikuntam, and Tiruchendur are currently all but closed to tourists because of the rough waves. Pilgrims have been warned not to go into the sea as part of the ritual bath in Thiruchendur and Kanyakumari. The waves also impact the livelihoods of fishermen in the area.

The rough waves make it impossible to get to the water directly and usually flood the shore areas, which are used to dry the nets used by fishermen. Many homes have been damaged in affected shore areas, and many have had to abandon their homes in fear.

The large waves that broke through the coastal road near Anchakadavu and filled the eastern side severely damaged the Poothura-Anchuthengu area around Thiruvananthapuram. The waves broke through the sea walls and damaged homes.

"Almost everywhere along the coasts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alapuzha districts, the waves have not yet gone away. The houses in the area are badly damaged because the coast has already been eroded in many places as a result of the construction of harbours, ports, and fish landing centres," said Valerian Isaac, leader of the Kerala Swathanthra Mathysathozhilali Union.

Surging waves also deposited a lot of sand on the homes of fishermen on the coastal road between Poothura and Anchuthengu, temporarily slowing down traffic. Most of the damage was in Punnapra, Arattupuzha, and Thrikkunnapuzha in Kerala's Alappuzha district. Many families have moved in with relatives outside coastal areas to avoid damage from the powerful waves.

The sea has also invaded into land in areas like Bekal, northern Kasaragod, and Kodungallur, central Kerala's Thrissur.

The likely cause behind the phenomenon

According to IMD, strong winds in the southern Indian Ocean are to blame for the swell surges currently occurring on the southern coasts. These winds come on quickly and without notice, which is where the name comes from.

During Kallakkadal events, the sea comes rushing onto land and floods large areas. Such events caught more attention after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami because many people mistook Kallakkadal for tsunamis.

"Tsunamis and Kallakkadal, or swell surges, are different kinds of waves caused by different things. Kallakkadal is smaller than a tsunami, but it often lasts longer and is strong enough to cause immense damages in smaller regions," said K. V. Thomas, former head of the Marine Sciences Division of the National Centre for Earth Science Studies.

"These flash floods happen quickly and without any changes in the winds or coastal conditions, which surprises the people who live there. Long-period swells that start in the Southern Ocean move north and hit the Indian beaches in three to five days, wreaking havoc on the area,'' said Thomas.

IMD has said that this phenomenon could recur in the coming days in coastal areas of Goa, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshwadeep, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The agency has already suggested that "operational and recreational" activities be stopped at beaches, which are likely to be affected.

Fishermen and people who live near the coast have been warned to be careful of possible surging waves, which can look like seawater pouring in the nearshore/beach area, especially in low-lying areas.

Senior scientist and IMD group director T. Balakrishnan Nair said that high-period swells began on April 26 about 10,000 km from the Indian coast in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

“They slowly moved towards the southern Indian Ocean (~35–55E; 60–50S) around April 28 and continued to create angry waves. This will keep happening until at least the end of May,” they said.

Nair said that when these long-period swells meet with high tides, they will make it more likely that low-lying parts of coastal states will flood.

Ajith Shanghumukham, who heads a fishermen’s association in Thiruvananthapuram, said the situation hurts small-scale fish workers.

"Smaller fishing boats need to be anchored far apart so they don't hit and damage each other in the next few days. Swell waves can cause heavy flooding along India's east and west coasts even when the local winds don't show any signs of them. Often, the event destroys things along the coast,” said Sekhar Kuriakose, member secretary of the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA).

“For example, fishermen lose their boats and fishing gear when the coast suddenly floods. High swell waves of up to 11 metres create tension on the southern coasts and are a matter of concern. Caused by a low pressure that moved from the Atlantic Ocean into the Indian Ocean, these waves finally reached the South Indian coast this week,'' Kuriakose said.

Against the backdrop of these sea surges, the Kerala Tourism Department temporarily stopped operating seven floating bridges across the state's coastal destinations.

"Kallakkadal happens without any warning signs or local wind activity, making it hard for people living along the coast... However, early warning systems, like the Swell Surge Forecast System that the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) launched in 2020, can inform people seven days in advance,'' according to Thomas.

As you might guess from the title of Eugene Levy’s latest series — “The Reluctant Traveler” — he’s a guy who’s happy to stay put.

The show, now in its second season on Apple TV+ , follows Mr. Levy, a 77-year-old comedy legend known for his roles in “Waiting for Guffman,” “American Pie,” “Schitt’s Creek” and more, as he defies his anxieties about airports, heights, temperatures, textures and vast swaths of the animal kingdom. With great consternation, he leaves his comfort zone — Canada, as he often reminds viewers — to shadow an expert moose caller in Sweden, herd 600 sheep through a German resort town and politely avoid an octopus aboard a Greek trawler.

Raised in Hamilton, Ontario, about 40 miles southwest of Toronto, Mr. Levy got his big break in 1972 alongside Martin Short, Gilda Radner, Victor Garber, Andrea Martin and Paul Shaffer in a celebrated production of “Godspell” at Toronto’s Royal Alexandra Theater . He has since called the city — and one historic, leafy neighborhood — home.

“Rosedale is a residential area that is right in the heart of Toronto,” he told me over coffee at Tavern on the Green, in New York, where he’d joined the cast of the fourth season of “ Only Murders in the Building .” With new skyscrapers going up “a mile a minute” in Toronto, he said, the scene from our table in Central Park looked a little like his view from Rosedale. He and his wife, Deborah Divine, are neighborhood loyalists — Avant Goût , a local bistro, has been their go-to for decades — but spots in other areas rank high, too.

Here are five of Mr. Levy’s favorite places in Toronto.

1. Terroni Bar Centrale

“Deb and I would usually do our daily constitutional in the morning and end up at Bar Centrale for a latte and some of their fine pastries,” he said, adding that the croissants are especially good at this spot in Summerhill, a neighborhood that borders Rosedale. Occupying the ground floor of the multistory Terroni Price restaurant in a 19th-century brick building, Bar Centrale forgoes the Wi-Fi you might expect with your coffee in favor of a wall’s worth of international magazines and — according to Mr. Levy — a staff full of good conversationalists.

2. Harry Rosen

The flagship of this family-run men’s wear emporium on Bloor Street is one-stop shopping for Mr. Levy. “I hate traveling around to different places to get different things,” he said, very much on brand. This place “has every designer, if that’s what you’re into, and everything from socks to tuxedos.” There’s also a sumptuous grooming department, a tailoring service and an array of coffee table books on topics like racecars, rockers and tattoo art.

3. CN Tower

Touristy? Sure, Mr. Levy acknowledged. Still, this approximately 1,815-foot communications and observation tower offers unrivaled views of the city and Lake Ontario, even if — like him — you avoid the acrophobia-inducing glass-floored sections. “We used to take the kids there when they were young,” he said. “I couldn’t even put my toe on the edge of the glass, but my kids would just destroy me — they would lie down on it.” A less stressful view: Rogers Centre , the stadium next door, where you can see the Toronto Blue Jays play baseball. “I’ve been a Jays fan for, I guess since they started in ’77,” Mr. Levy told me. He clarified his brand of fandom during a Season 2 episode of “The Reluctant Traveler”: “I don’t go and paint my face,” he told the Spanish footballer Héctor Bellerín , but “in a championship game, I’ll stand up and give them, you know, a thumbs-up.”

4. The Royal Conservatory of Music

“The musicianship coming out of the Royal Conservatory is just awesome,” said Mr. Levy, quick to note that his wife “would go there when she was a kid taking piano lessons.” (Students at the 138-year-old institution have included the pianist Glenn Gould and the singer Sarah McLachlan .) Mr. Levy loves concerts at the attached Koerner Hall — “the acoustics are impeccable” — where you can see top students or international stars .

5. Windsor Arms Hotel

The 1972 “Godspell” role became Mr. Levy’s first steady acting paycheck: “That was huge,” he said. And with his windfall (“140 bucks every single week”) he started enjoying meals and late-night cocktails, or cake and coffee, at the Windsor Arms , a 10-minute drive from the theater. The hotel was popular, he said, because it was “quiet and more residential” than others. (The suites feel like genteel prewar apartments, with musical instruments and plenty of plush seating.) One of Mr. Levy’s favorite old haunts there — the Courtyard Cafe — is now the Courtyard, an event space worth a quick wander to see where, among other things, Elton John and David Furnish held an engagement party. Mr. Levy, now a connoisseur of 5:30 p.m. dinners, is no longer the late-night cake-and-coffee guy he once was — but he still gives the place, you know, a thumbs-up.
