Metropolitan Opera Guild Announces Return to Backstage Tours
The Metropolitan Opera Guild has announced its Backstage Tours are set to make a return.
The tours will recommence on Dec. 4, 2022 and will allow visitors a chance to go behind-the-scenes at the famed opera house. The 75-minute walking tours will take place on some weekdays at 3 p.m. local time and on Sundays at 10:30 a.m.
The tours had been discontinued during the COVID-19 outbreak; even though the Met Opera reopened its doors for the 2021-22 season, the tours did not return due to the ongoing concerns over COVID.
“After almost three years, it’s wonderful to be able to bring backstage tours back,” said Stuart Holt, Director of Learning and Engagement, Metropolitan Opera Guild, in an official press statement. “This program offers participants an inside look at Met productions, and we hope it makes their visit to the opera house even more special.”

The Metropolitan Opera: What You Have to Know
by Fiona F.
Last Updated: June 27, 2023
The Metropolitan Opera in New York is, without question, one of the world’s preeminent opera halls. With its lavish productions and top-notch performers, this New York opera institution—dubbed “the Met” by locals—has staged legendary performances for more than a century.
Want to catch a performance at the Metropolitan Opera? Here’s a quick guide!
The Metropolitan Opera presents a rotating repertory of operas during a season from late September through May . Up to seven performances of four different works are staged each week, Monday – Saturday evenings and a matinée on Saturday. The season is a mix of opera revivals and highly anticipated new productions (usually staged to showcase a superstar singer). During the 2013/14 season, the Met will present 26 operas, including six new productions and a Met premiere.
Table of Contents
A quick history of the Metropolitan Opera
The Metropolitan Opera Company was founded in 1880 as an alternative to the old established Academy of Music (whose “old money” patrons restricted access to performances). The first Met subscribers included members of the Morgan, Roosevelt, and Vanderbilt families, and their new opera house opened on October 22, 1883.
Since then, the Met has staged the U.S. premieres of some of the most important operas in the repertory, as well as 32 world premieres. Legendary conductors who have taken the Met podium include Gustav Mahler, Arturo Toscanini, Leonard Bernstein, and James Levine.
The Met is particularly known for its stellar singers, which have included Enrico Caruso, Leontyne Price, Renata Tebaldi, Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Beverly Sills, Renee Fleming, and Anna Netrebko. In addition to presenting the world’s best singers, the Met discovers and trains artists through its National Council Auditions and Lindemann Young Artist Development Program.
Getting to the Metropolitan Opera
The Metropolitan Opera House is part of Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts , located between West 62nd and 65th Streets and Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Subway: #1 train to 66 th Street (Lincoln Center) Station
Bus: M5, M7, M10, M11, M20, M66, M104 or BxM2 lines.
For detailed information about NYC public transit, see the MTA’s website .
Buying tickets for the Metropolitan Opera
Tickets to the Met are available for subscriptions (a series of performances within a season), or for individual performances. Tickets can be purchased via the Met’s website , by phone (212-362-6000, Monday to Saturday 10am to 8pm and Sunday 12pm to 6pm) or at the box office. Note: There are no refunds, exchanges or cancellations on single sale tickets.
The Met has adopted a “Dynamic Ticketing” policy, meaning that ticket prices are not only determined by seating location, but also by demand and availability and may fluctuate accordingly. Currently, tickets prices range from $27 to several hundred.
For those seeking reduced price tickets or access to sold-out performances, Standing Room Tickets go on sale at 10am on the day of the performance. Orchestra Standing Room tickets cost $25 and Family Circle Standing Room $17. They can be purchased online, at the box office, or by phone (see above).
The Met also offers discount tickets ($25 to $35) through their Met Opera Students program, which requires prior registration with proper ID.
Finally, the Met offers Rush Tickets with 200 Orchestra seats available for $20 for Monday to Thursday performances, and $25 for weekend performances. (Galas and opening nights of new productions are excluded). Rush tickets for weeknights can be purchased at the Met box office beginning two hours before curtain, subject to availability. (Depending on the popularity of the opera or its star, lines can be considerable). Weekend Rush tickets are available through an online lottery.
For more information about Rush tickets and procedures, see the Met’s website .
Etiquette for attending the opera
While there is no dress code at the Met, the setting and occasion are somewhat formal. The Met recommends comfortable clothing appropriate for a professional setting.
It’s important to note that latecomers are not admitted to the auditorium until intermission , and patrons who leave the auditorium during a performance will not be readmitted until intermission or an appropriate interval. There are areas off the North and South sides of the Orchestra level where latecomers can watch the performance on monitors until they are allowed to enter.
There is a coat check station located on the South Concourse level. They do not accept luggage or other large items. For security purposes, these items are not permitted in the theater. Binoculars are available for rental at the coat check. The cost is $5, and a major credit card or driver’s license is required as a deposit.
What to notice in the Metropolitan Opera house
The grandiose opera house opened in 1966, replacing the original 1883 opera house that was located south of Times Square. The lobby spaces feature curvaceous lines and staircases that make the various levels appear to flow into one another.
Make sure you check out the starburst crystal chandeliers (a gift of the Austrian government) and the two immense paintings by Marc Chagall flanking the building’s facade.
Costumes and memorabilia from the Met’s illustrious past are displayed in locations in the lobby, and a portrait gallery of great Met artists is found on the lower level of the lobby.
The auditorium (capacity 3,975) features five seating levels above the orchestra (ground floor) that include box seats and balconies. With its outstanding acoustics, the main consideration for patrons is distance from the stage and sight lines (which can be limited on extreme sides). The décor is primarily red velvet, lots of gold leaf, and matching starburst crystal chandeliers. Watching the chandeliers rise to the ceiling as the house lights dim is a thrilling moment of anticipation before the performance!
The auditorium also features Met Titles , which are seen on individual screens on the seat backs and at all Standing Room locations. Met Titles provide simultaneous translations of the operas in multiple languages.
The Grand Tier Restaurant is open two hours prior to curtain to ticket-holders for pre-curtain and intermission dining. Reservations are required.
The Revlon Bar offers light snacks and a full-service bar. It is also open two hours prior to curtain for pre-curtain and intermission dining. There are four additional bars on various levels of the theater that offer pre-curtain and intermission beverages and snacks.
The Met Opera Shop , located beside the box office, sells CDs, DVDs, books, and special items inspired by Met productions and the company’s history. Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 10pm (the end of evening performance’s second intermission), and Sunday 12pm to 6pm.
The Met Opera Guild offers Backstage Tours during the Met performance season at 3pm on weekdays and at 10:30am and 1:30am on Sundays. Tours are not held on days of final dress rehearsals, or other special events in the opera house, so it’s best to call 212-769-7028 or visit the Met Opera Guild calendar . Tickets are $22 for the General Public and $18 for students and groups of 10 or more.
Can’t make it to the Met?

Metropolitan Opera Radio on SiriusXM Satellite Radio is a subscription-based audio service broadcasting live and historical performances, commercial-free and round the clock.
The Met: Live in HD is a series of performance transmissions shown live in movie theaters in 54 countries. The Live in HD performances are later also shown on U.S. public television (check local listings), and a number of them have been released on DVD.
Met Opera on Demand is an online streaming service that offers almost 400 Met performances, including Live in HD productions, classic telecasts, and archival broadcast recordings for viewing and listening on your computer or iPad.
Opera News is a magazine published by the Metropolitan Opera Guild which highlights productions and artists at the Met, as well as in-depth articles on opera and related subjects, reviews of opera performances, recordings, books, etc., and goings on in the opera scene world-wide.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
- Every day each car in Moscow metro passes more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
- Moscow subway system is the 5th in the intensity of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Just call it tortured couture.
Following a two-month break, Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour resumed in Paris, France, on Thursday — and along with adding several songs from her latest album, “The Tortured Poets Department,” to the already-sprawling setlist, the superstar treated lucky ticket holders to some fresh fashion, too.
Swift performed new tunes “But Daddy I Love Him,” “So High School,” “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?,” “Down Bad” and “Fortnight” wearing a white taffeta dress with a corseted bodice, dramatic hip draping and her own lyrics (“I love you, it’s ruining my life”) scrawled down the high-low skirt — a custom design by Vivienne Westwood, as the brand confirmed to Page Six Style.
She accessorized with one of the house’s signature three-row Orb chokers ($720) and, before launching into “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived,” topped off her gown with a matching white trench coat featuring military-style epaulettes and frogging.
Swift then switched things up with an on-stage costume change, stripping down to a second Vivienne Westwood ensemble: a black crystal-embellished bra top and briefs, which she layered beneath a metallic gold tailcoat with black crystal-embellished lapels to close out the “TTPD” section with “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart.”
The new costumes are perfectly in line with the literature-inspired looks Swift’s been exploring while promoting “TTPD” — think corsets, pleated skirts and plenty of black and white .
“There’s definitely a ‘literary academia’ style that’s going on,” Taylor Swift Style blogger Sarah Chapelle told Page Six Style last month. “The [visuals] are telling a very cohesive story, which is clearly pointing to being inspired by female poets of the past.”
The “Black Dog” singer collaborated with a number of major fashion houses on her stage styles for the Eras Tour, all of which are inspired by her past album aesthetics .
Standouts include the bedazzled Atelier Versace bodysuits Swift wears during the “Lover” section of her performance, the sparkling Roberto Cavalli crop-top-and-miniskirt combos she sports for the “1989” segment and the flowing, fluttering Alberta Ferretti gowns that add ethereal drama to the “Folklore” portion of the show.
And given that the aforementioned brands provided several different color variations of each look for Swift to rotate between as her tour rolls on, additional “TTPD” costumes are practically guaranteed to pop up at the shows ahead.

Taylor Swift is back on stage and kicking off the 18-city European leg of her Eras Tour by performing songs from her latest album, The Tortured Poets Department , live for the first time.
The 34-year-old returned to the stage on Thursday after a two-month hiatus to welcome her fans at La Défense Arena in Paris. According to social media users who posted from the concert, the first show of the European leg featured a new 45-song setlist that changed the order of certain eras -- including combining the Evermore and Folklore eras -- and a bevy of changes to the singer's costumes, montages, and more.
Eras Tour Opening Act
While Sabrina Carpenter served as the opening act for the first round of international tour dates for The Eras Tour , the European leg kicked off with Paramore serving as the opening act. The GRAMMY winners are joining Swift on her European leg for 51 shows. The rock band previously opened the show for two nights in Glendale, Arizona, in 2023.
Their Thursday setlist included "This Is Why," "Hard Times," "That's What You Get," "The Only Exception," "Caught in the Middle" and "Brick by Boring Brick."
Eras Tour Intro Montage
Swift added TTPD lyrics to the Eras Tour opening montage.
Eras Tour Introduction Monologue
Before she began playing the song "Lover" in the Lover set, Swift told her audience that the night would span 18 years of music. Previously, she said that the concert covered 16 years.
Eras Tour Lover Set Updates
Swift cut "The Archer" from her Lover set. The Lover house graphic also featured a new addition in the attic for The Tortured Poets Department .
Eras Tour Folklore and Evermore Set Updates
Swift combined the setlists for Folklore and Evermore 's eras.
"On the Eras Tour we have now reunited the sisters, combined them into one chapter," she said. "You can call it Folklore , Evermore or you can call it the Sister Albums! You can call it whatever you want as long as you promise to sing 'Champagne Problems' with me."
The new setlist cut four tracks from the formerly individual eras, including "'Tis the Damn Season," "Tolerate It," "The 1," and "The Last Great American Dynasty."
Eras Tour Speak Now Set Updates
Swift cut "Long Live" from the Speak Now era setlist. She also updated the set with an intro dance featuring Raphael Thomas and eight other dancers before she sang "Enchanted."
Eras Tour Red Set Updates
Instead of performing her Red setlist as the fifth era, Swift bumped the Red era to third place on the setlist.
Eras Tour Paris Secret Set
Swift kicked off the secret set with "Paris," a bonus song from her Midnights album. She also performed "loml."
Eras Tour The Tortured Poets Department Set
Swift officially launched the The Tortured Poets Department era of the tour after the 1989 set towards the end. She performed "But Daddy I Love Him," "So High School," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me," "Down Bad," "Fortnight," "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" and "I Can Do It with a Broken Heart."
Swift's 11th studio album was released on April 19 to much fanfare.
The 31-track collection -- which turned out to be a surprise double album -- features a hefty helping of heartbreak songs following her splits from Joe Alwyn and Matty Healy , as well as a few sweet love songs amid her current relationship with Travis Kelce .
"She has put her heart and soul into the music, just like with everything she does," a source told ET about the album, "and can't wait for her fans to listen to it and to share it with them."
Swifties predicted the singer would incorporate TTPD into her tour after Swift released a collection of new behind-the-scenes videos from what appeared to be tour rehearsals last month. The black-and-white clips are set to her current single, " Fortnight " featuring Post Malone , as part of her ongoing #ForAFortnightChallenge on YouTube Shorts.
"A fortnight 'til Paris," she captioned the post. The term "Fortnight" refers to a period of two weeks, a reference to the first of four Eras shows at Paris La Défense Arena on May 9.
Swifties wasted no time dissecting the images, taking note of what appears to be new props that could indicate the addition of TTPD songs to her already extensive setlist.
ET recently spoke to Travis Kelce , the Kansas City Chiefs superstar dating the pop star, during which he confirmed he'll be there with bells on for Swift's upcoming performances.
"There won't be a bad show, I promise you that," he said. "You know I gotta go support."
