The Master of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management provides an integrated hospitality and tourism education with an emphasis on regional, national and global implications of the field. The curriculum combines specialty classes in hospitality and business management, preparing graduates for well-compensated positions as managers in restaurants, hotels, conference centers, country clubs, and other hospitality venues.

Students will develop critical analysis skills, research abilities, and understand advanced hospitality and tourism issues. Graduates will be prepared to successfully secure management positions of leadership in the tourism and hospitality industry.

Dual Degree: MBA/MS Hospitality and Tourism Management

• Students have the opportunity to complete a dual degree program with the M.B.A. degree in Business Administration and the M.S. degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management . A separate application must be submitted for each program. Students can view admission requirements for each program on their respective catalog page.
• The dual degree Master of Business Administration and Master of Science degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management degree prepares students for responsible leadership positions and provides an integrated hospitality and tourism education with an emphasis on regional, national and global implications of the field.

1 The $571.90 per-credit-hour tuition rate applies to part-time Ohio resident graduate students taking fewer that 11 credit hours per semester.

2 The flat-rate semester fee of $6,277.40 applies to full-time Ohio resident graduate students taking between 11-18 credit hours per semester.

3 The $581.90 per-credit-hour tuition rate applies to part-time non-Ohio resident graduate students enrolled in a fully online degree program and taking fewer than 11 credit hours per semester, PLUS a surcharge of $10 per credit hour.

4 The flat-rate semester fee of $6,277.40 applies to full-time non-Ohio resident graduate students enrolled in a fully online degree program and taking between 11-18 credit hours, PLUS a surcharge of $10 per credit hour of actual credits taken each semester (between 11-18 semester credits or $110-$180).

An additional Distance Learning fee for all students enrolled in a distance learning course is $15 per credit hour. Program tuition and costs are estimated and subject to change.

About This Program

Students electing to major in Recreation, Park, and Tourism Management can choose from three concentrations: Recreation Management, Park Management and Tourism Management.

Students in this concentration prepare for careers in community recreation departments, youth development centers, inclusive recreation, campus recreation and wellness centers, adventure centers, corporate recreation and fitness programs, correctional and therapeutic recreation, military recreation, senior centers, youth sports, camps and non-profit organizations such as the YMCA and the YWCA. The program provides students with knowledge, skills, and abilities through course work and "hands on" field-based experiences. All students complete a capstone semester long internship prior to graduation. Internships are available locally, across the country and internationally. Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to become Certified Park and Recreation Professionals through the National Recreation and Park Association.

Complementary minors for Recreation Management majors include:

Students in this concentration prepare for careers in the great outdoors. The emphasis of this concentration is on parks and other natural environments for human enjoyment, environmental education and ecological diversity. Careers are available with a variety of public agencies and non-profits such as the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, state and local park agencies, the Nature Conservancy, as well as private outfitters, guiding services and outdoor leadership programs such as NOLS and Outward Bound. The program provides students with knowledge, skills, and abilities through course work and "hands on" field-based experiences. All students complete a capstone semester long internship prior to graduation. Internships are available locally, across the country and internationally.

Complementary minor for Park Management majors include:

Students in this concentration prepare for careers in tourism service management and sustainable destination development. A business administration minor is built into this concentration providing students with the necessary skills for entrepreneurial success within the tourism industry. Exciting career opportunities exist in resorts, theme parks, special events, convention and visitor's bureaus, regional planning, urban renewal, ecotourism, outdoor adventures, sport tourism and cultural tourism. The program provides students with knowledge, skills, and abilities through course work and "hands on" field-based experiences. The Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation, Park and Tourism Management provides students with an academic foundation and field experiences in preparation for the recreation, park and tourism professions. The program is comprised of three concentrations:

• The Park Management concentration focuses on providing opportunities for outdoor recreation and protecting the natural, cultural and historic resources on which those opportunities depend. Complementary minors include Disability Studies and Community Inclusion, Biology for Environmental Management and Conservation.
• The Recreation Management concentration focuses on providing opportunities for individuals and community health and wellbeing through recreation and parks in public, nonprofit and commercial settings. Complementary minors include: Disability Studies and Community Inclusion, Nonprofit Studies, Event Planning,
• The Tourism Management concentration focuses on providing entrepreneurial services for tourism industries as well as sustainable tourism destination management. Complementary minors include: Disability Studies and Community Inclusion, Event Planning, Business Management.

Admission Requirements

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago.

First-Year Students on the Kent Campus: First-year admission policy on the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon cumulative grade point average, strength of high school college preparatory curriculum and grade trends. Students not admissible to the Kent Campus may be administratively referred to one of the seven regional campuses to begin their college coursework. First-Year Students on the Regional Campuses: First-year admission to Kent State’s campuses at Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull and Tuscarawas, as well as the Twinsburg Academic Center, is open to anyone with a high school diploma or its equivalent. Current Kent State and Transfer Students: Active Kent State students who wish to change their major must have attempted a minimum 12 credit hours at Kent State and earned a minimum 2.000 overall Kent State GPA to be admitted. Students who have not attempted 12 credit hours at Kent State will be evaluated for admission based on their high school GPA for new students or transfer GPA for transfer students. Transfer students who have not attempted 12 credit hours of college-level coursework at Kent State and/or other institutions will be evaluated based on both their high school GPA and college GPA.

• Identify principles of inclusion, modification, and laws related to equal opportunity, and select strategies to mitigate barriers influencing recreation participation for people with disabilities.  
• Outline the historical, scientific, and philosophical foundations of the field.
• Differentiate the nature and scope of the industry; including critical aspects of program development, service development, management, and the components of leisure service delivery systems and various providers and levels of recreation.
• Analyze and apply common management roles, responsibilities, and approaches applicable to the field and the leadership styles and practices related to personnel management.
• Investigate public relations and marketing strategies, planning and development issues, and fiscal/budgetary management.
• Illustrate site specific attributes in relation to the RPTM field and the components of professional practice for successful engagement with the site.
• Model ethical, professional, appropriate behavior, and the ability to communicate effectively in oral, visual, and written forms.
•  Apply basic principles of the program development cycle for recreation services and modifications for inclusivity.
• Engage in academic research, writing, and evaluation of literature and data for evidence-based improvement of services in leisure science.

Different programmes have different concessions and/or loans.

If you are under 19 on 31st August prior to the start of your course you will be eligible for free tuition on this course. Some costs may still be involved, such as trips or uniform, but this will be discussed with you at enrolment. There is financial support available subject to eligibility.

This is not applicable to apprenticeships. Our apprenticeship team will discuss this with you once you have applied.

If you are aged 19 or over on 31 August prior to the start of your level 3 or 4 course there are no concessions available although you may be eligible to claim level 3 entitlement (see symbol 3 below). If you are not eligible to claim level 3 entitlement you can apply for a government Advanced Learner Loan .

This is not applicable to apprenticeships. Our apprenticeship team will discuss this with you once you have applied.

Concessions are available on some qualifications for the following groups of students:

Students in receipt of an eligible state benefit who want to be employed, or progress into more sustainable employment and:

• Are unemployed
• Less than £617 per month (where you are the sole adult in the benefits claim)
• Less than £988 per month (where you have a joint benefit claim with your partner)

To claim this concession you will need to bring original proof of benefit to your enrolment session. The proof must be dated no more than three months prior to your course start date. 

Students in receipt of a low wage who:

• Are employed, or self-employed 
• Earn less than £20,319.00 annual gross salary

Course Description

This course allows students to study a broad range of topics within travel and tourism. It will equip them with practical vocational skills such as communication, selling and customer service - as well as studying a variety of other subjects including Worldwide Destinations, UK Destinations, Retail Travel Services, Resort Representatives and Promotional Materials.

Other Important Information

You will learn through case studies, practical activities, group discussions, research and classwork exercises. You will have the opportunity to visit travel and tourism organisations and to take part in day and residential visits.

Future Prospects

All our students could progress to a level 3 Diploma in Travel and Tourism.

Entry Requirements

You will need either five GCSEs at grade D or above or a full Foundation Learning qualification at level 1, which should include some units at level 2. You will also be required to attend an interview and demonstrate your suitability for this programme.

This short course offers a specialist qualification for entering employment in travel and tourism or progressing onto further education such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Travel and Tourism or related degree programmes. You could also go on to study a relevant NVQ vocational qualification, which could be work-based. With further training, you could go into a job related to travel and tourism such as a Travel Agent or a Cabin Crew Assistant. The course provides a work related programme of study so you could go straight into a job as it helps you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers are looking for, especially in the creative industries.
