The Best Carry-On Travel Backpacks

A person standing outside in a light blue short sleeve shirt wears the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L backpack, in black with a gray llama-head logo and aqua accents.

Opening up your favorite carry-on travel backpack—with all of your stuff in the right place and easy to reach—should feel like you’re opening the door to a well-organized closet or sitting down at a clean desk.

This is a moment to center yourself, no matter how chaotic the journey.

What we considered

A 45L bag maximizes overhead space but can get heavy when fully packed; 35L bags tend to be more manageable.

Clamshell designs open like a book and are easiest to pack, but bags that open traditionally tend to have more structure.

Ideally, a travel backpack has handles on all sides, especially the bottom, for pulling it out of overhead bins or from under seats.

Some internal pockets are useful, but major organizing is better managed on your own with packing cubes.

We spent six months testing 22 bags and flying across the country with all of our picks.

In the end, we chose two as our top picks: the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L (for most trips) and the larger Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L . Both bags are exemplary carry-on travel backpacks that are designed for comfort, durability, and organization.

Though these backpacks are great as companion bags for any trip, they’re designed to ultimately replace all of your other luggage and become your exclusive bag as you travel.

This is not a style of packing that’s for everyone, but once some people try it , they’re forever hooked. However, finding the right bag is a personal choice, and no single bag will appeal to everyone.

That’s why we have picks that are great for people traveling for work , others designed to be carried over long distances , picks for maximizing your packing space , and budget options for travelers who want to give the one-bag strategy a try.

I’ve been covering aspects of luggage and travel bag design for Wirecutter for nearly a decade and have personally researched, tested, and compared hundreds of bags in that time. And as members of a remote organization, our editors and writers travel a lot and are continually testing the gear we recommend—our travel gear guide remains a perennial favorite among staff members. I personally try to do most of my travel with a single backpack whenever possible. I spent nine months roaming around Hawaii with not much more than that and another six months nomadically couch-surfing in New York City.

In addition to documenting our own experiences, I reached out to experts and writers who specialize in traveling the world carrying everything they need in a single bag. Eytan Levy is the owner and operator of the Snarky Nomad travel website, which combines travel guides and tips with in-depth gear reviews. James Feess is the founder of The Savvy Backpacker and author of The Savvy Backpacker’s Guide to Europe on a Budget . And Sharon Gourlay is the writer of the Where’s Sharon? travel website. I also spoke with moderators of Reddit’s r/onebag and r/heronebag forums, as well as with Chase Reeves, bag fanatic, reviewer, and owner of Matterful .

The shiny, one-piece back of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L on a tester's back

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L

A versatile small pack for a week or a weekend.

The Allpa’s clamshell design makes organizing your things simple. The strap design lets you easily wear this durable bag on your back or carry it in your hand while you’re on the move.

Buying Options

Get this if: You want an easy-to-organize, comfortable-to-carry bag with a rainfly for downpours or you want to support a B-corp and its related social and sustainable missions .

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L features an easy-to-pack clamshell design and highly adjustable straps that make it a great all-around bag for any traveler who’s dedicated to packing light, or for a smaller person who wants less to carry. Handles on all four sides of this bag make it easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty and has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28 - and 42 -liter sizes. But the 35 liter is, for us, the best. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when its fully packed, and for a bag that big, we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for any shorter trip, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack that’s designed to fit snugly into the Allpa’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

The Allpa has a clamshell design, which means it opens like a hard-sided suitcase: A large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, letting it fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothes (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

The Cotopaxi Allpa open to show the zip-up compartments on both the left and right sides filled with clothes, packing cubes, and other gear.

The Allpa’s hip belt, which can be removed while the bag is on your back, is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa is decently comfortable over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of, unlike the shoulder straps on our other picks, the Allpa’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom, so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer; the other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

The Allpa is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag or the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. The Allpa is the kind of bag you can toss as easily into an overhead compartment as you can into the back of a rusty pickup truck. Uniquely in this category, the Allpa also includes a rainfly.

A person holding a gray Cotopaxi Allpa backpack in front of themselves by gripping the side handles.

Flaws but not dealbreakers The Allpa has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.

Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but we’ve found after many years of travel with our bag that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots. We’d love to see the all-nylon option return at some point, for people who prefer the added robustness and don’t mind sacrificing a bit of rain coverage.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight: 3 pounds, 5 ounces Main compartment access: Clamshell opening Style: Adventurous Colors: Assorted

A person in a gray tshirt and red shorts stands between a solid wooden fence and tall shrubs while wearing the 45 liter Peak Design Travel Backpack.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind, but most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

Get this if: You travel often with expensive camera gear and need easy access and many storage pockets, or you just prefer a backpack-based packing system with plenty of adaptability and customization.

Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be luggage on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. Not so with the Peak Design: It looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

You can access the bag through a back panel, which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch, as well as a front one, if you unzip the pass-through divider. You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps that run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. It will still feel larger than a normal daypack in this configuration, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400D nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough, but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa .

The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga ; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in three sizes, and if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (the photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

Peak Design also makes a line of ultralight packing cubes . They’re good cubes, and they compare well to the ultralight Eagle Creek Pack-It Isolate Cube set, our pick for light packers . However, the Peak Design cubes are sized specifically for this bag and fit just so inside it, especially when combined with other Peak Design gear cubes and accessories, like the toiletry bag . (Chase Reeves has done an in-depth video review of these cubes; it’s a good resource for anyone who’s on the fence about buying them.) After testing the cubes (and this is not a mark against the Eagle Creek or the Peak Design ultralight cubes, both of which are excellent), I personally still prefer the more-rigid Eagle Creek Pack-It Reveal set, one of our longtime picks .

Flaws but not dealbreakers The Travel Backpack has few flaws. It is expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga instead.

A person in a black jacket walks across a brick plaza while carrying the Topo Designs 30 liter travel bag over their shoulder with the optional shoulder sling. The bag is olive green with bright yellow and red accents.

Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 30L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s open interior makes packing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate the Topo’s accessible front pockets and holders for organizing books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

Get this if: You travel often for work and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks. The front panel and assorted pockets are like a small traveling office space.

Of all the bags we recommend, the Topo Designs Global Travel Bag 30L comes closest to the style of an everyday carry backpack, due to its small size and minimal external features. This bag is perfect if you have to travel to a work event, get off the plane, and then use it as a daily backpack without drawing too much attention to yourself. Topo also includes built-in attachment clips, if you want to piggyback a smaller daily-carry backpack to your Travel Bag. I know people who love to do this. I personally do not. But it’s a good feature, especially if you’re committed to Topo gear in general. However, given its basic strap system and flat nylon back, the Topo is not built as well as our other picks for longer hikes.

The Travel Bag is one of the simplest bags we tested, with a main compartment and some basic document organization in the front pocket. This bag is a front-panel loader (which we find very easy to pack), organized around a main pocket that can fit two large packing cubes. Inside, the lid of the bag also has two mesh dividers, for a small amount of organization. Outside, the bag has two small zippered pockets for travel accessories (such as earbuds and a passport) and a larger organizer pocket for books, tickets, and snacks. The Topo is constructed with heavy YKK zippers and, similar to the Cotopaxi Allpa, has built-in zipper security loops (strong loops of fabric that secure your zippers when the bag is shut), if you want a touch more security.

Similar to our other picks, the Travel Bag is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty and repair program from Topo. However, Topo’s gear is made from 1000D nylon (a dense and very tough fabric) and built like a tank; it has rigid padding throughout, and there is an attention to detail (particularly in the stitching around the zippers and handles) that’s a mark of quality to any savvy bag enthusiast. The point is, you would really have to get into some trouble to need the repair program. But it’s there if you do need it.

If you want to carry as much as possible, the Travel Bag also comes in a 40L model . It’s a fine bag at that size, and it does include a small yet stowable waist belt to help carry the weight. But we prefer our larger picks, like the Tortuga (more carrying capacity) or the eBags TLS Mother Lode (less expensive).

The Travel Bag has a built-in laptop compartment that fits most 15-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body. The Topo is well padded on all sides, and it is stitched in a way that keeps the edge of your computer from the bottom of the bag and should protect your computer from all but the worst drops. This bag, like most of Topo’s gear, is designed to work with Topo dopp bags , accessory bags , and packing cubes . Fully packed, it can carry two large packing cubes, two medium accessory bags, and a dopp kit.

Flaws but not dealbreakers Despite its travel-document organization, the Topo bag lacks the large internal pockets of our other picks, and the bag’s main compartment isn’t quite as spacious as that of our other picks. People who like a deeper main compartment might prefer the Cotopaxi or Tortuga bags. The Topo bag’s compartment is a little tight for large laptops, so it isn’t the best when going through security. We’d love to see a little more attention paid to the back contouring and straps of this bag, to make longer walks more comfortable.

A tester from behind, wearing the Osprey Farpoint

Osprey Farpoint 40

For long distances on foot.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, the Farpoint is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world. And it’s backed by a lifetime warranty.

Osprey Fairview 40

For smaller torsos.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, the Fairview has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Get this if: You’re starting out with one-bag travel and aren’t sure which style of bag is best for you, but you want one that’s easy to carry over long distances.

The Osprey Farpoint 40 is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint applies to the Fairview as well.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

If you’re just starting out with one-bag travel, or you aren’t sure what type of travel bag best suits your needs, the Farpoint is an excellent first choice.

The Osprey backpack opened to show its neon-green interior mesh pocket on one side and a bright red packing cube strapped in to the other side.

The Farpoint is easy to pack. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, without your having to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike packing a bit of sturdy luggage, which is something we love about bags like this—especially when you pack with packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the available space in the Farpoint is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration that Osprey has put into its line of hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint. After more than six years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to put on when it’s fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa is more flexible and lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

A black Klean Kanteen water bottle in the mesh water bottle pocket of an aqua colored Osprey backpack.

As some reviewers have pointed out, smaller individuals may appreciate the lighter weight and more-compact design of the Farpoint or the Fairview (which basically have the same design, but the Fairview is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso). On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

Flaws but not dealbreakers For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little not to like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Capacity: 35 liters Weight (Farpoint): 3 pounds, 3 ounces Weight (Fairview): 3 pounds, 2 ounces Main compartment access: front-panel loader Style: active Colors (Farpoint): Gopher Green, Tunnel Vision Grey, Muted Space Blue, Black Colors (Fairview): Winter Night Blue, Zircon Red, Night Jungle Blue, Black

A traveler wearing a black backpack

Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

Get this if: You want to maximize your packing space in a bag that’s durable, customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), and water-resistant, and that has organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

When it comes to packing, the Tortuga has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter bag (the max space for a carry-on bag), which we tested, along with the 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

However, the Tortuga is the most adjustable bag we’ve tested five years in a row, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. This design (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best of those we’ve tested at distributing the weight of the bag (4.5 pounds when empty—roughly a pound and a half more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design.) The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

Flaws but not dealbreakers Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the Tortuga’s shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. Personally, it still makes me nervous to see the Tortuga traveling on the luggage belt toward mysterious machines and conveyors beneath the airport—all of which, in my imagination, are waiting to tear the hip belt from the bag or slice open the sailcloth exterior. But the Tortuga appears to shrug it all off with ease. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design Travel Backpack .

We’ve also fielded complaints from some testers that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4.5 pounds, the new Tortuga is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be —the difference is noticeable—and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design . But if you feel like you would struggle carrying this model, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

Capacity: 40 liters Weight: 4.5 pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: minimal, with a rigid construction Color: black

A person in a gray tshirt and red shorts wears the eBags TLS Mother Lode while walking outdoors next to tall shrubs.

eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender

Affordable capacity and organization.

The Mother Lode offers the organizational features most travelers want, at an affordable price. However, it’s not as comfortable to carry as pricier options, and it can expand well past the limits of most overhead bins.

Get this if: You want an affordable bag with a traditional look, to carry as much as you can—potentially more than you’re allowed by airlines.

If you like the concept of the large Tortuga Travel Backpack but not its price, the eBags TLS Mother Lode Weekender is a great option for infrequent travelers who are willing to give up some features, such as a decent hip belt. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve that holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders, and an easy-to-access main compartment. This bag also has the largest capacity of any of those we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s more-casual looks might not be to everyone’s taste.

The Mother Lode is a good suitcase built around a basic (if slightly underwhelming) backpack. That’s the tradeoff you make for its low price, which is less than half that of other models. Unlike our other picks, the Mother Lode is not for carrying over long distances, especially when it’s full. If you know you’re going to be walking long distances (say, over a mile or so) with your pack on, you might want to consider one of our other picks. That said, if you’re carrying your bag only from a taxi to the airport security line but you want to avoid checked-item fees, the Mother Lode might be the bag for you.

The best part of the Mother Lode is the interior layout: It is easy to pack, and it’s smartly organized but still adaptable enough to mold to your preferred style of packing (meaning you can find what you need when you need it). However, the intense design focus that’s evident in the interior of the bag seems to have slipped a bit when it came to the exterior. Compared with those of several other picks in this size, this bag’s slim straps and barely there hip belt are noticeably lacking, especially if you’ve maxed out the bag’s ludicrous capacity.

The clamshell opening of the Mother Lode is similar to the Tortuga’s or the Cotopaxi Allpa’s. This space is augmented by a separate front compartment and organization panel for quick access to mid-size items like a toiletry kit; a top compartment for keys, small books, or sunglasses; and a front pocket organizer for smaller flat items, like travel documents and wallets. The laptop pocket is large and well protected, and it has a strap to help secure and position your laptop’s weight higher up your back if you wish.

Flaws but not dealbreakers There are plenty of flaws with this bag, if you choose to see them as flaws instead of the necessary consequences of the Mother Lode’s inexpensive price. During testing, we packed as much into the Mother Lode as we did in the Tortuga (more, if we expanded the Mother Lode past strict carry-on dimensions). The problem with that much capacity? It becomes an absolute bear to carry. And the flimsy waist belt is almost useless at distributing weight across your hips. Several times during testing I considered just cutting it away. This is a shame, since the bag could go from “decent for the price” to “fantastic, especially at this price” with just a few upgrades.

Capacity: 45 liters (expandable to 65 liters) Weight: 4 pounds Main compartment access: clamshell opening Style: casual Colors: Eggplant, Garnet, Slate Blue, Heathered Graphite, Pine Green

If you want to travel like a backpacker but fit in at a board meeting (and have the budget to do so): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 —its reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers, and after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks, and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability, you need to buy the $33 internal frame , the $33 hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the $33 shoulder strap (all prices at the time of writing). This all adds up on a bag that already costs $330. Even though everything about the Tom Bihn (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

Anyone who wants to travel light and stay flexible should seriously consider using a carry-on travel backpack. For some people, the challenge of cutting down a packing list is intimidating. But if you can get past that initial hurdle, traveling with a single bag is a revelation. With fewer items, you have more time to concentrate on and appreciate the journey. It’s easy to remain more mobile when you’re not loaded down by heavy luggage and easier still to adjust your plans mid-trip. If you’re willing to do laundry on the road, then one bag is all you need to travel indefinitely. And as airlines charge more and more for checking baggage, traveling with just a carry-on bag (frequently referred to as one-bag travel ) is becoming less of a lifestyle choice and more of a survival skill. At its heart, one-bag travel allows you to discover more—not just about the places you’re going but about yourself and what you really need day to day.

If you desire more creature comforts or more gear, or if you plan to be away for a long time across multiple climates, you’ll want a bigger travel backpack . These larger bags are not carry-on-friendly, though, especially in Europe, so be prepared to check them. We also have a guide to wheeled carry-on bags , which are designed to hold a lot of stuff while remaining easy to maneuver around airports. However, wheels, retractable handles, and frames subtract from precious packing space and add weight, and can make a bag difficult to manage on busy city streets.

There’s no single backpack that is perfect for everyone. Before you make any purchase, consider some basic points. How much can you carry? And where do you usually visit: city or outback? Travel gear should feel like a welcome companion—there to support you when you need it, but unobtrusive when you do not. The best bags are built to survive a lifetime of use and, if cared for properly, should be something you develop a bond with over time.

To compile our list of possible models, we scoured the world of travel blogs and product reviews (most driven by a similar affiliate revenue model to ours), including The Savvy Backpacker , Snarky Nomad , The Travel Hack , Nomadic Matt , The Travel Tester , Where’s Sharon? , Y Travel Blog , Lengthy Travel , and GearLab . Additionally, we lurked on Reddit’s r/onebag  and r/heronebag forums, and emailed and had phone interviews with the moderators of those subreddits, Addison Ryan and Lindsay Lorraine Calderón, respectively. Additionally, we spoke with the prolific travel bag reviewer Chase Reeves to get his thoughts on what most great bags have in common. We ended up with a list of 60 candidates and then narrowed this list down to 22 finalists using the following criteria: capacity, compartment design, aesthetics, reviews, and reported comfort.

There isn’t one perfect bag to please everyone, but there are tools you can use to find what’s best for you. We did a lot of our own research to compare models of travel bags, but r/onebag moderator /u/-Nepherim created one of the best product-comparison spreadsheets we’ve seen . If you want to keep researching your own pick, this spreadsheet is a great place to start.

A graphic comparing 45-liter vs. 35-liter travel bags. The difference in size translates to fitting 4 large packing cubes, 1 medium packing cube, and a toiletry bag (45-liter) vs. 2 large packing cubes, 1 medium packing cube, and 1 small toiletry bag (35-liter)

Even if you aren’t convinced by our picks, we do think we can help you figure out what parameters are best for travel bags of any size. We’ve narrowed down our specifications to the following list of features, ordered from most to least relevant.

  • Panel-loading or clamshell opening for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with these bags, you want to be able to open them and see everything you’ve packed. A panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional top-opening design—lets you pack and unpack these bags just as you would a suitcase.

A graphic illustrating a clamshell bag opening

  • Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
  • Hip belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
  • Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.
  • Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you such exotic, light, and strong materials as Dyneema or sailcloth.
  • Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
  • Stowable straps: These are nice to have but aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
  • Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything, while others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.

During testing, we flew with these bags across the country, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

The Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L has an updated design featuring a new hip belt, which brings it back into class with many of its competitors in this category. In the past, the MLC’s straps were too slim and unsupported for the bag’s 45-liter capacity. Also, its lack of any framing gave the bag a soft and unsettling feeling if it was anything but fully packed. We’re looking at the newest model to see if some of these problems have been corrected and if a former champion travel backpack can regain the spotlight.

Asenlin 40L Travel Backpack : This mind-bendingly inexpensive bag (which includes three packing cubes, all for $45 at time of publication) is a remarkable testament to the cutthroat logic and efficiency of a globalized free market. Is it attractive? No. Is it comfortable to carry? Not particularly. Is it durable enough to withstand years of travel? Unlikely. Is it $45? Yes! If you want the absolute least expensive carry-on travel backpack we’ve ever seen, this is it. But you’ll get more with the TLS Motherlode , which, although double the price, is still very affordable.

Away F.A.R. Convertible Backpack 45L : A rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Admittedly made of excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

Cabin Max Metz (and the nearly identical AmazonBasics Carry-On ): This cheap, no-frills bag is enticing for the price. But after comparing these bags to the TLS Mother Lode, we think you’re better off paying twice the price for way more than twice the value. The Mother Lode is more reliable and built from stronger materials, and it will hold more stuff comfortably than either of these bags.

GeniusPack Travel Backpack: The GeniusPack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need this, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . (GeniusPack now has a version 2 of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.)

Goruck GR2 : I’m a big fan of Goruck bags, and I use the GR1 regularly as my daily work and travel bag. These bags will last a lifetime. However, the GR2 is too expensive and too large (its 40L size is a true 40L) for many people, especially since none of the three sizes (26L, 34L, and 40L) comes with a hip belt. We wish the GR2 had a removable hip belt, something similar to what’s on the GR3. That said, this bag is simple, sturdy, and stoic. There is a lot to love about it. And if you don’t mind the high cost, this bag will probably outlast your corporeal self.

Goruck GR3 : The GR3 is almost worth the cost for certain people. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear and good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. It’s a good bag. However, after testing it, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, is difficult to keep clean, and clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

Kelty Redwing 44 : When we got our hands on the Redwing, we realized that it was closer to a top-loading light camping backpack than to the panel-loading packs we tested. It didn’t quite fit the scope of this review because of its design.

Hynes Eagle 40L Flight Approved Carry-on : This pack is very similar pack to the eBags TLS Mother Lode and the Cabin Max Metz models. It might be useful as a weekend traveler, but we don’t think it would hold up for longer trips.

MEI Voyageur : There’s a lot to like about this bag, especially for the price. It features 1000D Cordura nylon and YKK zippers, and it has a spacious design and decent shoulder straps. But we’re still on the fence about recommending it. The lack of recent reputable reviews gives us pause, along with the sparse Shopify website, which, the last time we checked, in 2024, wasn’t operational. (The company now appears to be selling directly via PayPal.)

Minaal Carry-on 2.0: This bag was designed to be the absolute best travel backpack for business people. But if you’re a business person, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. Even so, if you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, you should know that many travel writers have spoken highly of this bag, despite its high price. This does look to be a well-thought-out pack, but we think our picks are more versatile for world travel. (Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version ; our thoughts about it remain the same.)

Osprey Porter 46: This was a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint 40 . It’s about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to gate-check your bag at the last minute, this would have been an excellent alternative to the Farpoint 40. (It has since been replaced by the Osprey Sojourn Porter 46 ; we may take a look at it.)

Trakke Storr Carryon : Travel-bag enthusiast Chase Reeves used to list this bag as one of his top picks for a medium-size carry-on bag, and it looks very well built . But at $500, plus shipping from Scotland, it is simply too expensive for most people.

We also tested and dismissed The North Face Overhaul 40, which has since been discontinued.

Traditional suitcases are the perfect travel companion when it comes to bringing a sizable amount of clothes and gear for extended time away. However, if you’re just taking a short trip — a weekend, say, or a simple day-long sojourn — a travel backpack might very well be all you need.

Not only can travel backpacks carry and provide easy access to all the essentials, such as your phone, water bottle, a change of clothes, and even a laptop, but they also travel incredibly well, often fitting under the airplane seat or in the overhead bin without a problem.

However, not all backpacks are created equal, so it pays to invest in one that best serves your needs, be it a weather-proof daypack designed for the outdoors or a sleek, business-appropriate option with a padded sleeve that protects your laptop or tablet.

No matter what your budget or taste level, you’ll find what you’re looking for among the best travel backpacks on Amazon right now.

Things To Consider With Travel Backpacks

Overall, travel backpacks are designed with comfort, style, and organization in mind. With such limited space, you’re going to want to keep everything in its rightful place. However, certain details, such as the type of material, interior pockets, and built-in features, all play a part in how easy they are to use on the go.

Be it scaling a mountain or heading into the office — in the end, whatever we’re doing, we all want to look good doing it. That said, it pays to compromise on the way a backpack looks if it will serve you better in the long run.

For example, minimalistic backpacks with just a few features and minimal interior and exterior pockets are as stylish as they are easy to use, but they offer less versatility when it comes to carrying technical accessories (such as camera lenses or climbing gear).

At the same time, tricked-out backpacks with tons of bells and whistles (hooks for climbing carabiners or rope, mesh pockets for water bottles or wet rain gear ) can be overkill if you’re simply visiting your local park or bopping between cities — not to mention an eyesore in an office setting.

It’s worth looking into the quality and durability of the backpack you choose to make sure that it will stand up to whatever environment you plan to wear it in.

One of if not the largest selling point of any travel backpack is its ability to carry that can’t-live-without-it essential: a laptop . With global nomadism on the rise like never before, being able to bring your work device on the road has become a non-negotiable part of the business travel lifestyle.

While many backpacks are able to fit a 13-inch MacBook Air without problem, you’ll need to make sure you invest in a bigger bag if you plan on toting around a 15-inch laptop (or larger). In addition to the extra space, travel laptop backpacks go above and beyond in protecting that expensive piece of luggage by adding extra padding or retrofitted sleeves to keep the device snug and secure.

You read that right. While originally designed to be thrown onto your back, some backpacks come with wheels for even easier transport over flat surfaces — these come in handy when your pack is extra heavy and you’re racing through a terminal to catch your flight (or trying to navigate a narrow airplane or train aisle).

If this sounds like an all-too-familiar scenario, it might be worth investing in a travel backpack equipped with wheels that you can glide to your next destination. Of course, wheeled backpacks also come with setbacks, including being overly cumbersome for carrying long distances and not as flexible size-wise, possibly exceeding carry-on size requirements .

The 6 Best Black Friday Travel Backpacks for Men

Best For: Business Professionals

Samsonite ‘s leather backpack is all class and no gimmicks. For business travelers who fly frequently and need a piece of luggage that looks as good as it functions, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better deal than this.

The sleek, simple leather exterior is as chic as it is understated, but there’s even more to love beneath the surface.

The interiors were designed for the multiple-devices business lifestyle: there’s a padded laptop sleeve that can fit 2 16-inch laptops, while a front organizer pocket features pockets specifically designed to carry tablets, pens, and up to 2 phones . There’s also a mesh zip-up sleeve for stashing miscellaneous stowaways like paper clips or flash drives.

Another convenient feature is the leather handle stitched onto the back that easily loops over a carry-on suitcase handle for even easier transport on the road or in the terminal.

The backpack comes in cognac brown, as well as classic black, and is sturdy enough to withstand bumps and jostles as you travel between cities, hotels, and board meetings. That said, the leather exterior is not waterproof , so be sure to pack an umbrella if rain is in the forecast.

Best For: Outdoor Adventure

Osprey ‘s Porter 46 Travel Backpack fits a deceptively large amount of stuff, making it a favorite for adventurers seeking a lightweight carry-all for their gear.

While this model meets carry-on restrictions for most airlines, the front-loading pockets are extra roomy, featuring a lockable sleeve that fits most 15-inch laptops, a front panel for easy-to-reach travel documents, and an innovative U-zip design that makes packing and unpacking a breeze. In other words, no more ripping out an entire bag’s contents because you can’t see what you’re looking for due to a narrow top flap.

Even during lengthy trips outdoors in the elements, the padded back and side handles, not to mention the lightweight durable nylon, stay molded to your body for all-day comfort. And when the backache sets in, Osprey’s signature 2-in-1 design allows the shoulder straps and hip belt to be stowed away, instantly converting the backpack into a duffel bag .

Hot Tip:  Does the 46-liter pack sound too large, or too small, for your travel needs? The Osprey Porter also comes in a carry-on-compatible 30-liter version, as well as a larger 65-liter model for lengthier treks.

Best For: Safety

Traveling anywhere with a bag, be it a foreign country or in your local neighborhood, poses a risk that your things might get stolen. For risk-averse travelers who want to keep the odds in their favor, there’s no better option for safeguarding your possessions, and yourself, than an anti-theft backpack .

Pacsafe is one of the leading manufacturers of anti-theft backpacks, and the LS 350 version might be its best. Its zippers are lockable , the water-resistant nylon-and-polyester material is layered with a lightweight steel mesh on the inside that’s resistant to cuts and tears , and there are even 2 RFID-blocking pockets that keep your credit cards and ID safe from illegal wireless scanners.

Safety measures aside, this pack is also pretty comfortable. The adjustable shoulder straps and back panel are both padded for extra support on your shoulders and spine. The bag also weighs less than 2 pounds on its own while boasting interiors roomy enough to carry whatever it is you want to bring that day — a DSLR camera , a 13-inch laptop, headphones , or even a chunky sweater.

Best of all, Pacsafe’s 5-year warranty ensures that if you’re not completely satisfied with your bag’s performance, you get your money back.

Best For: Camera Gear

Camera gear is tricky to travel with. Lenses, tripods, hard drives, and camera bodies themselves are awkwardly shaped, heavy, and almost always expensive, which makes choosing the right bag to carry them in one of the most important purchases you can make.

Professional photographers often travel with multiple pieces of luggage in order to tote all their equipment around, but casual photographers can get away with just the basics. Lowepro has become a go-to name in the travel photography and video world because its bags are specifically designed to safely hold and transport camera gear .

Like its name suggests, the Lowepro Fastpack is for travelers who prefer quick, easy access to their gear on the road. To ensure that, this backpack is divided into 2 zones — the bottom compartment is reserved for your camera , which features a side-entry zipper for fast access, while the top section includes small stash pockets and a zip-up sleeve for all those extra loose items like hard drives, charger cables, and your smartphone.

There’s also a padded zip-up pocket in the back that holds 13-inch laptops (or smaller) as well as a stretch-mesh side pocket and side-mounted strap that can secure a tripod or water bottle.

Because weighty equipment can make this bag heavy, Lowepro also added some hideaway straps in the back so that travelers have the option of securing the bag to the handle of a rolling suitcase for easier transport.

Planning on hiking once you reach your destination? A padded waist belt helps keep the bag secure on your back in uneven terrain or can be completely removed if you find it unnecessary.

Best For: Frequent Flyers

The Swiss are renowned for their punctuality — they’re still the world’s best watchmakers, after all — and this mindset feeds directly into SWISSGEAR ‘s ScanSmart backpack. Everything about this bag is designed to get you through security and onto your flight without so much as a hiccup.

The large, lay-flat back panel includes a separate padded laptop compartment that is TSA-friendly  so you can breeze through the security line. There’s also a U-zip front pocket, which is perfect for stashing those loose pens, keys, documents, and other small travel essentials.

Where this bag truly excels, though, are those extra features that go beyond the call of duty.

For example, the center compartment features an internal panel that can transform into side-access storage for a pair of shoes . The phone-charging station is another nice touch. There’s even a soft, “crush-resistant” sunglasses compartment  as well as an insulated side pocket designed to keep your water bottle cool.

The stylish black-with-red-trim look is a sleek, signature look for the brand, but behind this bag’s classy design are a few rugged features that easily transition into outdoor use, including weather-resistant 1200D ballistic polyester material and mesh-paneled shoulder straps that increase ventilation to fend off sweat.

Hot Tip:  Keep in mind that while this bag comes with a built-in USB port for charging devices on the go, the battery pack costs extra.

Best For: Everything and the Kitchen Sink

Ever feel like you could use an extra limb with all the wacky, technical bits of equipment you find yourself traveling with? We’re looking at you, gadget collectors, engineering students, and heavy-duty adventurers!

Oakley wasn’t kidding when they named this backpack the “Kitchen Sink.” This large bag has so many functions, you might find yourself bringing things along just because you can.

Expect your standard features — abrasion-resistant fabric , room to fit shoes and most laptops, mesh-lined shoulder straps to keep you cool, and a padded back to keep you comfortable — along with a few less-standard details, which makes this bag stand out.

This includes a headphone port , a bottom storage space for shoes that includes drainage ports for wet or dirty items, 3 metal front hooks for strapping on extra items (like climbing carabiners or keys), and heavy-duty clamps that keep the backpack closed, even at full capacity.

Not sold on the specs? Just read the reviews, which overly praise this bag for its spaciousness, sturdiness, and the fact that it stays comfortable even when packed to the brim.

The 6 Best Black Friday Travel Backpack Deals for Women

Best For: Spacious Versatility

Don’t be fooled by the delicate gray hue of Ytonet’s Laptop Backpack — this bag punches way above its weight in terms of all it can do.

What sets it apart is its rectangular shape that it retains due to a steel frame that allows more room for storing a large number of items. Books, shoes, and up to a 15.6-inch laptop and 10.5-inch iPad can be held snug thanks to a Velcro strap.

In addition, a large flat top can be fully opened, exposing all 11 inches by 6.5 inches of the bag’s interior for an extra-wide view of its contents.

There’s an external USB charging port for your phone in addition to an internal charging cable, and there are side pockets for water bottles and hidden pockets for personal documents. Plus, 2 thick top handles provide an alternative to hoisting this large bag on your back for too long.

From books to diapers and overnights to weekend excursions, this bag can carry it all.

Best For: Stylish Simplicity

This Swedish outdoor outfitter has been around since the ’60s but only recently took the fashion world by storm with its Kånken backpacks.

Originally designed in 1978 to combat back problems for schoolchildren, these collectible backpacks have become a global fashion statement, beloved as much for their collectible color combinations as they are for their lightweight, streamlined design .

The bag is made of Fjällräven’s signature “Vinylon F” material that is dirt- and water-resistant and wipes clean. The Kånken also features 2 side pockets as well as a front zippered pocket and reflective logo. While not practical for longer or more arduous journeys (toting your laptop or other heavier materials is not recommended), these bags nonetheless make great day packs for trips to the park or the city .

Best For: Maximal Organization

Are you one of those travelers that just throws things into a bag on your way out the door, only to struggle to find where you put X, Y, and Z the rest of your trip? TIMBUK2’s Authority Backpack is here to organize your essentials and your life.

This backpack is on the heavier side — around 2 and a half pounds — but everything is there for a reason.

The oversized main compartment can fit a 17-inch laptop with ease. A neoprene pocket is designed specifically to keep your water bottle cool. Those seemingly endless sleeves and compartments? Cell phones, chargers, cords, and pens all have a home. There’s even a handy key fob so you’ll never have to dig for your keys again.

With so many pockets and an easy-to-navigate interior — not to mention a stylish exterior — this bag does the hard work for you, keeping everything in its rightful place so you can get through each day without a hitch.

Best For: Business Trips

Hot Tip: Save an extra 20% when you apply the coupon located below the price!

Travelers seeking function without fuss will love the look and feel of Incase’s ICON Dot Backpack, whose minimalist exterior keeps zippers and flaps to a minimum while the interior works overtime to keep your belongings safe, secure, and organized.

The interior compartment is lined with faux fur , so you can stuff in a 13-inch laptop or tablet while keeping any exposed screens scratch-free. Additional storage pockets and compartments are there for holding the rest of your items, like notebooks, pens, headphones, and accessories.

The stylishly simple outer shell comes in classic black, though its pros don’t stop at its good looks. Incase’s 840D ballistic nylon is built to withstand tougher bumps and scratches — a godsend when you’re navigating public transportation, security lines, and overnight hotel stays.

Another unique, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it feature? A top pocket that is the perfect size for your cell phone.

Best For: Adventure Travel

While women and men can use most of Osprey’s bags interchangeably, the Osprey Fairview 40 was designed specifically to contour to the female body shape for comfort that lasts day in and day out.

The key is in the hip belt and patented LightWire frame suspension  that redistributes some of the backpack’s weight to the waist instead of the shoulders.

Interiors maximize the bag’s usefulness on the road as well, with an easy-to-access large zippered pocket with stash pockets that can hold your sunglasses, water bottle, and other travel accessories with ease. Off-trail, a padded laptop sleeve means you can just as easily use this for business purposes or weekends away.

The 40-liter bag is all most travelers will need in terms of space, but 55- and 70-liter bags are also available if you’re seeking additional storage for a longer or more technical trip.

Best For: Affordable Dependability

The fact that Matein’s laptop backpack retains a 5-star rating even after over whopping 50,000 Amazon reviewers weighed in should tell you all you need to know about this product.

Up to 2 15-inch laptops can fit inside its roomy compartments, and there is a built-in USB port for charging your phone on the go.

Between the comfort of its padded back and shoulder straps, the durability of its water-resistant polyester exterior , and the surplus of compartments (enough to fit your pens, keys, gadgets, and documents), this is an all-around winner for almost every traveler, all for an incredibly affordable price.

Hot Tip: From toddlers to teens, we also have a guide to the best travel backpacks for kids .

A backpack is one of the most essential accessories a traveler can buy — especially if your laptop is a frequent companion. This portable piece of luggage keeps your gear safe and everything in its rightful place, with serious style to boot.

Of course, you can spend a pretty penny to maximize looks or extra features. However, the best Black Friday deals on Amazon will go far in helping your score a lot for much less.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best travel backpack.

There are many brands and styles of backpacks on the market, but those that are best for traveling check off 3 important boxes: comfort, space, and durability.

Whether you’re navigating a major city or rural village, you want a bag that can withstand wear and tear, have enough room to carry what you require on the go, and stay comfortable on your shoulders after long periods of time on your back.

Osprey, Timbuk2, and SWISSGEAR are all good examples of brands whose backpacks achieve this balance.

What's the best travel backpack for traveling abroad?

Size is the most important factor you need to consider when taking a backpack abroad. Most 40- to 45-liter backpacks meet the majority of airline requirements as a carry-on item, but it’s always best to check with the airline before you fly.

How big of a backpack do I need for 2 weeks?

The best backpack for you comes down to personal preference and trip type. Traveling to a single city with consistent weather conditions will require far less luggage than, say, an epic hiking adventure through the mountains and pampas of Chilean Patagonia.

If you’re planning on bringing lots of clothes and gear, a 60-liter backpack or larger will probably be required in order to fit what you need.

How do I protect my backpack when traveling?

There is only so much you can personally do to make sure your backpack enjoys a long life, which is why it pays to invest in a bag made from strong, durable materials that can withstand bumps, scratches, and time spent on dirty, wet ground.

Pacsafe makes an exceptionally safe backpack that even is resistant to cuts and tears.

Although it’s designed as the ultimate carry-on for three days, the Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L’s comfy shoulder straps can be stowed under magnetic flaps if you need to check it in. There’s also a luggage pass-through for roller bag carry underneath. This smart and efficiently designed backpack’s magnetic appeal stretches to some stash pockets that can take water bottles, but when empty sit flush against the side of the backpack. A third unusual feature sees it expand from 27L to 33L, though a final unique flourish – the ability to both attach compression straps to the outside and then stow them in a magnetic-closing pouch – seems over-engineered.

It’s a shame that there are no compression straps inside the main compartment for clothing, though that area has plenty of zipped pockets for bits ‘n’ pieces. In here is also a secured and padded pouch for a maximum 16-inch laptop, as well as a tablet. Looking great, comfortable to wear and with some sought-after features, the Peak Design Travel Backpack 30L is an excellent example of a professional-looking travel backpack. It’s available in black, sage green and midnight blue.

Eagle Creek

+ Can easily be checked in

+ Extremely comfortable

+ Has a rain cover

- Check-in cover is a squeeze

- Very outdoorsy design

There’s no sadder sight than a backpacker hefting 80L around the world. Cue the Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack 55L+, the perfect sized backpack for efficient and fun long-term travel – as well as for serious hiking – whose ultra-comfy straps can all be zipped-up safely for when it’s time to take to the skies. That’s thanks to a zip-around cover that completely envelopes its comfortable shoulder straps, sturdy hip-belt and adjustable back support system (though it is a bit of a squeeze). Rather cleverly that cover is reversible and elasticated, also acting as a rain cover for the backpack for downpours.

The Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack 55L+’s clamshell opening main compartment – which can also be accessed from the top – houses a padded sleeve for a maximum 15-inch laptop. It also contains compression straps for clothes and a large mesh pocket for sundries. Add grab handles top and sides, a zip to expand the entire bag to 62L litres and a stretch water bottle pouch (not to mention that it’s made from recycled materials) and the Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack 55L+ surely sets the benchmark for how all backpackers should travel.

Waterfield SF

The perfect travel backpack for frequent flyers, remote work escapes and weekends away

+ Fits two (or three) laptops

+ No loose straps or buckles

+ Streamlined look

- Not for hiking or backpacking

- Expensive

Have laptop(s) will travel? If the clamshell design is a common theme in travel backpacks, so is a laptop sleeve, but two laptop sleeves? That’s much rarer, and we found that the Air Travel Backpack can actually take three laptops. If that’s overkill there’s little else to complain about on this travel backpack that’s carefully designed to suit the needs of those who spend a lot of time in airports, airline cabins and on urban journeys.

With a flash of either crimson, blue, black or chocolate full-grain leather on its grab handle and across the front, the Air Travel Backpack is about as big a carry-on as can be and carefully separates clothes (which get compression straps) from tech gear. That latter mobile office section opens clamshell-style, too, making it easy to access laptops in its two padded sleeves during work meetings without going anywhere near your dirty shirts. However, what we love most about the Air Travel Backpack is its streamlined look; there’s no trace of loose straps or buckles and the stretch pocket for a water bottle is invisible unless you use it. Not only could you walk off a plane straight into a business meeting with the super-smart Air Travel Backpack, but you could also live out of it for several days.

Check out our review of the WaterField Air Travel Backpack for more information!

Tumi

Easy access carry-on backpack that doubles as mobile office

+ Excellent build quality

+ Lay-flat laptop for airport security

+ Variety of sections

- Very expensive

- Not much room for clothes

What makes a bag a ‘travel backpack’ is debatable, but arguably it’s a clamshell opening that mimics a suitcase. However, what that’s used for can differ. Take Tumi’s Brief Pack, which unlike others here is not only aimed at business travellers, but very specifically at those that frequently take a laptop through airport security.

A tough work bag that easily stands-up on its own on a scanner belt or in a tray, the Brief Pack has a section that zippers around three sides that flops a maximum 15-inch laptop down ready for inspection. No more putting a laptop into a separate tray. It’s got plenty more going for it as a carry-on, too, with a roomy section for accessories and perhaps a change of clothes, a water bottle pocket and plenty of small pockets on the front for carry-on essentials. Like many of the bags here it’s also got a pass-through strap on the rear that can be slipped over the telescopic handle of upright rolling luggage.

Incase

Tough all-purpose travel pack for staying organised when travelling

+ Simple clamshell design

+ Easy to extract a laptop

+ Good build quality

- Exterior compression straps are fiddly

- No water bottle holder

While some travel backpacks go straight for the business traveller and others aim for backpackers, the Incase EO Travel Backpack aims for the rest of us. A simple, fairly boxy design available in black, grey or navy, this 24L bag can be expanded to 33L using a wraparound zipper, though doing so does make this bag slightly too deep. Cue some droop, which is not helped by its soft design or its exterior compression straps, which prove slightly annoying to use. However, core features impress if you travel light.

The headliner is surely its clamshell-opening main compartment, which features two sides for storing clothes, each secured not using compression straps, but with zipped webbing closures. There’s another soft compartment behind it for a maximum 16-inch laptop and a large tablet, an organiser pocket across the front that can take a pair of shoes, and a soft pocket for keys, a phone or sunglasses. Build quality is good, though since its shoulder straps are fairly basic and that expansion option brings a saggy look it’s best not to overstuff the Incase EO Travel Backpack.

How to choose the best travel backpack for you

The most important thing to consider is what you’ll use it for. Some travel backpacks are designed for city breaks, short flights and weekends away while others zero in on being professional-looking travel backpacks designed for business trips, and often building-in laptop sleeves.

Then there are outdoor-specific travel backpacks aimed at backpackers and backcountry hikers who simply want easier access to their stuff than a traditional rucksack offers.

In our search for the next travel backpack, we’ve reviewed and compared backpacks from trusted brands like Tumi, Peak Design, Eagle Creek, Incase and Waterfield Designs.

I’m a Former Lululemon Employee, and I’ve Got My Eye on These 16 Pieces From the New Travel Collection

Belt bags and buttery-soft leggings are just the beginning.

Travel + Leisure / Tyler Roeland

It’s no secret that Lululemon’s beyond-comfortable athleisure has become a favorite of travelers. As a travel writer, I see Everywhere Belt Bags and Wunderlust Weekenders on planes, trains, and the ground everywhere from Australia’s white sand beaches to Europe’s cobblestone streets. And when I worked at Lululemon in a past life, I sold thousands of buttery-soft bottoms to shoppers in pursuit of the perfect pair of travel pants .

Now, nearly 30 years after its founding in Canada, the world-famous brand has dropped a huge new travel collection . Their women’s travel capsule alone features 29 pieces (starting at just $28), and their entire travel collection for her has nearly 200 pieces. They cover every category from jackets to jumpsuits. Meanwhile, Lululemon’s men’s travel collection features more than 150 pieces ranging from board shorts to button-down shirts. Accessories-wise, think luggage, organizers, key chains, and packing cubes.

Feeling overwhelmed by all the options? I’ve got you. While shopping for two upcoming trips to Brisbane and The Big Apple , I recently took inventory of all of Lululemon’s new travel products. It’s almost as if I’m still on their payroll. But I’m not. Lululemon is just one of my love languages. That said, you don’t need to know the difference between the Align jogger and the Adapted State jogger to appreciate a little Lulu on your travels. Whether you’re in the market for a packable backpack or a comfortable pair of white sneakers , see below for the 16 travel-friendly Lululemon pieces I’d prioritize packing.

Lululemon Dance Studio Relaxed-fit Mid-rise Cargo Pant

Dance Studio is a misnomer. This lightweight, mid-rise cargo pant is just at home in an airport. For starters, it has a looser fit and adjustable drawstring waist, something I appreciate when I’m bloated or just want to feel comfy (but also look cute). This pant also has more pockets than previous versions — Lululemon has been selling the Dance Studio pant for more than a decade —  and the hems are cinchable for days when you want the jogger look. This new version is available in nine colors, but if you’re okay with the previous iteration, you can get it on sale for just $89 in Belgian Blue .

“Fabulous for running errands and travel,” is the title of one recent review. Note: most shoppers say these pants run big.

Lululemon Cityverse Women’s Sneaker

What happens when a brand, well-known for its buttery soft fabrics and four-way stretch, designs comfortable footwear? You get this stylish sneaker designed for travel days when you easily hit 10,000 steps before lunch. The Cityverse currently comes in four colors. I’m obsessed with white sneakers that go with every outfit, but I’m also tempted to get a pair in Precocious Pink after having watched Barbie . While these shoes look simple, they boast 3D-molded support and cushioning, and the rubber outsole is cupped. That helps with traction, especially on Europe’s well-worn cobblestone streets.

“I walked about 18-20kms per day in these shoes and had zero [issues] with sore feet,” wrote one satisfied shopper, who continued to say, “… also, no sock slippage (I find some shoes ‘pull’ socks into them)! I highly recommend these shoes.”

Lululemon Align Leggings High-rise Pant

My friends joke that I have more pairs of Align leggings than I do jeans. They’re not wrong. Like the Align joggers I never leave home without , the Align High-rise Pant is made of Lululemon’s signature Nulu fabric. While it’s far from sheer and it holds up for years, it’s so soft and weightless it almost feels like you aren’t even wearing pants! This popular pant is also ideal for travel because it offers just the right amount of stretch, and thanks to the Lycra, it never loses its shape. I hate when I wear leggings multiple days in a row and the butt starts to sag. Currently, it comes in 13 colors and four different lengths.

In fact, the Align High-rise is such a hit that it has almost 10,000 five-star ratings. “My most comfortable travel leggings,” wrote one shopper who acknowledged that they’re not cheap but deemed them “100 percent worth the price.”

Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag 1L

If you haven’t seen Lululemon’s ubiquitous Everywhere Belt Bag on the streets yet, you’re probably living under a rock. Just kidding. But seriously; this game-changing accessory has nearly 19,000 five-star ratings. Currently, it comes in 13 colors (it’s also on sale in True Navy for $29 ). While it’s one-size-fits-all, the hip belt is adjustable. You can even wear it cross-body if you want. Personally, I appreciate the water-repellent fabric and the waist-facing hidden stash pocket I know no one but me has access to.

“Wish I had bought it sooner,” wrote one shopper who comfortably wore theirs on vacation and spotted at least 10 other people wearing the same bag every day. (When something is this popular, you know it’s worth it.)

Lululemon Softstreme High-rise Midi Skirt

The few times I’ve been fortunate enough to fly business class, I’ve wanted to be comfy but also dressed up. This new midi skirt would have been perfect! It’s made of a ridiculously soft fabric featuring four-way stretch. But the best part? It doesn’t wrinkle easily. Actually, the skirt’s hand pockets (with hidden card sleeves) may be the highlight. And it’s highly versatile. While it’s comfortable enough to lounge in, it’s also classy enough to wear on a dinner date.

“This skirt goes with just about every top and shoe in my wardrobe and can be dressed up or down,” wrote one shopper who says it’s “great for travel.”

Lululemon Relaxed-fit Twill Blazer

Many travelers have a love/hate relationship with blazers when they’re traveling. They love the look but hate the fit. For that reason, Lululemon designed this relaxed-fit blazer. It’s still tailored — so it looks sleek and has structure — but it’s not as constricting, making it easier to layer over tops and overall comfier to wear. In keeping with the athleisure theme, the twill fabric wicks away sweat, and there’s a back vent for “added mobility” and breathability. There are also four pockets: two interior welt pockets, and two on the front.

While it looks worthy of the boardroom, several shoppers praise how well this blazer works for travel. One wrote, “It’s lightweight and doesn’t crease,” while another traveler said it’s “a great quality blazer for the price.”

Lululemon Softstreme High-rise Pant

For economy, I’m more than happy to rock these pants made with the same silky soft material as the skirt above. While I normally wear joggers, this wide-leg look is definitely trending right now. And thanks to the high-rise fit and the way the fabric drapes, these pants are far from frumpy. That said, the drawcord waist and front pockets make them practical.

“They look nice for almost any occasion,” wrote one shopper who deemed them the most comfortable pants they own. “They will be my travel pants for sure as they don’t show wrinkles, even after being folded up for a few days.”

Lululemon Men’s License to Train Tank Top

It may be designed for training, but this best-selling breathable base layer is also ideal for travel because it’s made for “more wearing, less washing.” Since the moisture-wicking fabric features the brand’s anti-stink Silverescent technology, odor-causing bacteria has an extremely hard time growing. My boyfriend recently wore this on a 17-hour travel day flying home from the tropics, and I swear he smelled as good when we landed back in Montana as he did when we left.

“I got so many compliments in a few hours,” wrote one shopper who owns it in multiple colors. It’s currently available in five colors, and an older version is on sale in Aero Blue for $49 .

Lululemon Men’s Textured Full-zip Hooded Jacket

“Travel-friendly” is what the designers of Lululemon’s newest men’s outer layer were going for. Naturally, they made this piece extremely lightweight with plenty of pockets and adjustable vents. Whether you’re on a plane with broken AC or a plane blasting the AC, a little airflow can be major when it comes to regulating temperature. I also like that the hood and hem are cinch-able, which keeps out moisture. However, since this jacket is made of water-resistant nylon, you don’t need to worry too much about getting wet.

Because it’s so new, the Men’s Textured Full-zip Hooded Jacket, available in black, only has one review. While the shopper wishes it wasn’t so thin, they like other features. “The color of the jacket is almost pitch black which I really like,” they wrote. “The pockets are also very deep, so you won’t have to worry about items falling out of them.”

Lululemon Wunderlust Weekender Bag 48L

I bow to whoever invented the wheeled carry-on. Still, I find shorter sojourns and road trips are more doable with a duffle bag. With 48 liters of space, the Wunderlust Weekender holds 3 to 4 days’ worth of clothes, and thanks to the adjustable external straps, I can attach extras like my shoes, yoga mat, and jacket to the outside. I also love the exterior padded pocket which is perfect for my laptop, and all the other pockets for smaller valuables. Like most of Lululemon’s products, this bag is made of a water-resistant material that sheds moisture, and it’s versatile, something I appreciate because it’s not cheap.

“Such an amazing weekender/gym/ travel bag,” declared one shopper. “It’s stylish and functional — couldn’t recommend enough.”

Lululemon 2-in-1 Travel Duffle Backpack 45L

If you want a duffle that you can also wear on your back, opt for this slightly smaller dual-purpose piece that features hidden backpack straps. Like the Wunderlust Weekender, it’s also made of water-repellent nylon and has a removable shoulder strap. Pocket-wise, it’s similar. There’s a padded pocket large enough for a 16-inch computer, a stash pocket for straps you’re not using, and even an external water bottle pocket, so you have easy access to hydration and don’t need to worry about water leaking in your bag.

“Easy to run through the airport with it on my back, and happy to fit it into the overhead compartment,” wrote one shopper who says it’s the “only” bag they need for travel.

Lululemon Travel Packing Cubes 3-pack

Even though I buy luggage with plenty of pockets, I still rely on packing cubes to keep my clothes organized. This set features three different sizes of cubes. The smallest is great for underwear and socks, the medium is what I keep my tops in, and the largest is perfect for bottoms and bulkier items. Like most of the other packing cubes I’ve tested, these feature mesh, so air can escape (which helps them compress). What sets them apart is the fact they have side handles so they’re easier to carry. They also feature double zippers, a nice added touch that comes in handy if you tend to overpack.

“I travel for work 365 days out of the year and love these cubes,” wrote one shopper. “You can fill them up and zip them down to a smaller size which is very helpful.” Note: most negative reviews say the quality is great, they just wish these bags were bigger.

Lululemon Travel Laundry Bag

Gone are the days when hotels had disposable plastic laundry bags I could “borrow” for my dirty or damp stuff. These days, most are opting for reusable bags (as they should). But because we can’t take them with us, it’s time we invest in our own. Unlike most heavy-duty canvas bags hotels use, Lululemon’s laundry bag is made of a water-repellent polyester that weighs half as much despite still being able to handle a few days’ worth of clothes. I also love that this bag consists of two big zippered compartments. Use one for really dirty stuff and another for pieces you’ve already worn but may need to wear again.

“Smart design and compact for traveling,” summed up one shopper who uses theirs for business travel.

Lululemon Travel Organizer

Picture vertical packing cubes, all attached together, that you can hang in a closet to create floating shelves, and you have this handy travel organizer. In total, all three compartments (two of which are zippered) offer 26 liters of storage. That’s about enough for a few pairs of pants, several shirts, and all of your socks and underwear. Even when it’s filled to the max, it doesn’t take up much space thanks to the compression straps that help pack it down. And when not in use, it folds up, so it’s easy to store.

“Keeps me organized and makes the packing process a breeze,” found one shopper who called it “the perfect travel buddy.”

Lululemon Packable Backpack 32L

As much as I adore this $25 foldable backpack I found at Amazon , I can’t deny that Lululemon’s version is much more my style. I love how sleek it looks. Available in black and grey, it goes with pretty much everything. And despite looking professional enough to wear on a business trip, it’s extremely practical. For starters, it has adjustable shoulder straps, a trolley strap that attaches to your suitcase handle, and plenty of pockets including one that turns into a packable pouch for storing the backpack when it’s not in use. Filled to the brim, this bag can hold up to 32 liters. But when it’s packed down, it takes up about as much space as a T-shirt.

“Slaying it” is the title of a review left by a shopper who wrote, “It’s super stylish, durable, and incredibly convenient.”

Lululemon Roll-up Travel Toiletries Kit

In a couple of weeks, I’m traveling on New Zealand’s TranzApline Train , where I plan on using this hangable roll-up toiletries kit. Like planes, most trains have limited counter space in their bathrooms. And because this kit is made of a water-repellent fabric, I don’t need to worry about accidentally splashing water on it. While it lays flat when not in use, and you can obviously hang it up to access your items, this kit also features snaps on the end, so you can stand it upright. It has three zippered compartments, and many shoppers say they love it for storing tech accessories, too.

“It helps keep my items organized and is easy to grab all my items in one swoop as I move around the hotel, or when visiting someone’s house,” wrote one shopper who called it “the perfect travel companion.”

The price of oil is hovering around $90 a barrel, levels last seen six months ago in the wake of the Hamas attacks on 7 October.

It's a slight fall from the $91.50 recorded on Friday but still not good news for motorists and for most of the economy, which is largely reliant on oil to fuel production.

The FTSE 100 index of most valuable companies on the London Stock Exchange is down 0.03% this morning with Marks and Spencer experiencing the biggest fall.

Its share price is down 2.45%, followed by the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) itself.

Following stories of a shareholder revolt in LSEG, as its chief executive David Schwimmer is in line for a pay rise from £6.3m to £13.2m, the share price fell 1.9%.

A pound buys $1.2616 and €1.656.

Nail salon prices across the UK are going up today as thousands of workers band together.

The Nail Tech Org (NTO) says its member nail technicians make on average just under £7 per hour, well below the minimum wage of £11.44 - and so they're collectively coming together to raise prices to help increase pay.

Lauren Pritchard, owner of The Beauty Bar in Birmingham, told Sky News the cost of opening her salon on a day-to-day basis has doubled in the last four years because of increased energy and product costs.

She says she has already lost some clients after announcing her price increase of £2-3 per service.

"It's always going to be a bit scary," she said, but increasing her prices at the same time as others makes it easier.

"It's us coming together to encourage each other rather than pitching us against each other by undercutting prices."

The state pension rises by 8.5% today.

The "new" state pension, for those reaching state pension age on or after 6 April 2016, will rise to £221.20 a week - up from £203.85.

The "basic" state pension, for those who took it out prior to April 2016, is rising to £169.50 a week. These people may also get SERPs (State Earnings Related Pension Scheme), which goes up by 6.7%.

Both groups may get more or less depending on individual circumstances.

While the rise is welcome news for some 12 million pensioners, we reported last week that 650,000 additional pensioners could be dragged into paying income tax for the first time.

This is down to state pensions rising in line with inflation while the tax threshold has been frozen at £12,570 (and will remain so until 2028).

The 8.5% increase in the "new" state pension this week will take it to £11,502. While welcome, it means any pensioner with an additional income over £1,068 per year - for example from a private pension - will trigger a tax bill.

Means-tested benefits will also increase today - along with other benefits increases this weekend and at the start of the month. Here's a round up...

  • Child benefit

The amount people can earn before child benefit is reduced or taken away is increasing.

At the moment, people lose 1% of the benefit for every £100 they earn over £50,000. At £60,000, the benefit is cut completely.

From this month, the benefit won't be reduced until one parent earns more than £60,000. And it will only go completely at £80,000.

Benefits and tax credits that are linked to inflation will rise by 6.7% this month.

That was the level CPI in September.

These benefits have to go up 6.7% by law:

  • Personal independence payment (PIP)
  • Disability living allowance
  • Attendance allowance
  • Incapacity benefit
  • Severe disablement allowance
  • Industrial injuries benefit
  • Carer's allowance
  • Additional State Pension
  • Guardian's allowance

The government also pledged the same raise for benefits including:

  • Universal credit
  • Contributory employment and support allowance
  • Contributory jobseeker's allowance
  • Statutory maternity/paternity pay and maternity allowance
  • Income-based jobseeker's allowance (JSA)
  • Income-related employment and support allowance (ESA)
  • Income support
  • Working tax credit
  • Child tax credit

From April universal credit rates are:

  • Single and under 25 - £311.68
  • Single and 25 or over - £393.45
  • Live with partner, both under 25 - £489.23 (for you both)
  • Live with partner, either of you are 25 or over £617.60 (for you both)

Every Monday we put your financial dilemmas or consumer disputes to industry experts. You can find out how to submit yours at the bottom of this post.

This week, Sky News reader SBwrry  asks...

"I own a flat in a block where the developer contracted a company to manage the communal facilities. The first year the monthly charge was £149 per month. From April they will increase the monthly charge to £216 per month. What rights do I have to challenge this increase?"

Mark Chick, senior partner at Bishop and Sewell law firm, picks up the first half of this one...

Firstly, we need to understand whether this is a shared ownership property or not.

However, assuming the lease has a service charge, and that the common facilities form part of the costs which are recoverable under the terms of the lease, then the leaseholder would have the right to challenge the costs in the first-tier tribunal.

In accordance with the provisions of the Housing Act 1985, service charges must be "reasonable" and you have the right to bring a challenge.

In this situation, the leaseholder would need to pay their own costs of going to tribunal and therefore it may make sense to act collectively; if the tribunal did order the service charge is "unreasonable" and should be reduced, this should benefit all those that pay it.

But the first step is to write to the freeholder or manager querying why the increase has been levied, and also to review carefully the provisions of the lease to ensure these are costs which they can legitimately pass on to you as the flat owners.

The Money team's Katie Williams has looked at another avenue you could explore...

Leaseholders in a block of flats can take over management of the building under a process introduced in 2002 called right to manage (RTM).

The leaseholders have to set up a RTM company in order to be able to take over management duties. It can be done without the permission of the landlord, but they will have a right to be a part of the company. They'll also have the option to dispute the claim if they think the RTM company isn't entitled to manage the building.

The RTM process can be used to take back control of a poorly managed block, but flat owners don't need to prove mismanagement to exercise their right.

There are some conditions that have to be met before management can be taken over:

  • The building must be self contained and include at least two flats;
  • At least two-thirds of the flats in the building have to be leasehold;
  • At least 75% of the building must be residential;
  • At least half the leaseholders must participate, or all if the building consists of two flats only.

The advantage of right to manage is that you have greater control over the cost of running the building which could lead to big savings - but a potential disadvantage is that it could be time-consuming and stressful in the long run.

If you regularly buy herbs and spices from the supermarket, it could be that you're doing it all wrong.

These items have their own section, usually somewhere near the stock cubes and gravy.

If that's where you pick up your cumin or chilli flakes, for example, you should consider having a look down the world aisle instead.

They're usually much, much cheaper per 10g, and although you'll likely have to buy a slightly bigger packet, you're getting much better value for money.

The Money team popped into a Tesco Extra to have a look - though you'll find this applies to all the big supermarkets where they have a world food aisle.

  • East End ground cumin - 13p for 10g v Tesco own brand 23.3p
  • East End chilli flakes - 7.6p for 10g v Tesco own brand 35.7p
  • East End cinnamon sticks - 13p for 10g v Tesco own brand 83.3p
  • Rajah chilli powder - 5p per 10g v Tesco own brand 20p
  • Rajah turmeric - 6p per 10g v Tesco own brand 22.2p
  • East End fennel seeds - 13p per 10g v Tesco own brand 27.8p
  • Natco ground coriander - 14.5p per 10g v Tesco own brand 27.8
  • East End garlic powder - 13p per 10g v Tesco own brand 22.2p

And it's not just herbs and spices.

For example, we saw desiccated coconut at £4.25 per kg down the world aisle, compared with £7.25 for Tesco's own brand.

A popular London restaurant chain has ditched tips - and has instead introduced a 15% "brand charge" in order to increase staff wages.

Ping Pong's decision comes just months before new laws mean restaurants will have to give 100% of tips to staff - and unions have hit out.

How much are wages going up?

The dim sum chain's lowest paid employees will see their pay increase from £10.42 to £12.64.

The national minimum wage for people aged over 21 rose from £10.42 to £11.44 on 1 April. The real living wage in London is £13.15, according to the Living Wage foundation.

What is the 15% 'brand charge'?

The "brand charge" covers "costs associated with operating a franchised brand and delivering the dining experience to brand standards", Ping Pong menus read.

The charge will eventually be incorporated into menu prices.

Customers at Ping Pong will no longer be able to leave a tip by card. Cash tips are allowed - but many customers don't carry cash these days.

Unite's Bryan Simpson said offering £1 above the minimum wage to replace "a healthy per hour tip rate" is "a complete slap in the face" for staff.

"Ping Pong's decision to effectively deny workers tips by cynically changing the service charge to a 'brand charge' in order to circumvent the new fair tips legislation is one of the most blatant examples of tips theft that we've come across as the union for restaurant and bar workers," he said.

"No matter what senior management call it, customers will assume that this 15% is a tip that should go to workers, but it won't. That is completely disingenuous."

Several reviews on TripAdvisor bemoaned the bill change, with some describing it as "outrageous".

"I thought it was a service charge at first but queried it and was told it was a brand charge and service had to be paid in cash on top! Needless to say we asked for this to be deducted and I did not then feel inclined to give them a service tip," one reviewer said.

What has Ping Pong said?

Owners AJT Dimsum said: "The business is very proud of the reputation it has as a good employer and, despite the many recent headwinds, has acted with integrity and honour, with a high priority placed on employee retention.

"The benefit to our employees will be stability of wages throughout the year, reducing the impact of seasonality and the higher wages will also mean improved access to financial products such as loans and mortgages."

We're all familiar with the stats - nearly half (42%) of all marriages in the UK end in divorce.

But unless you've been through it, you'll probably be surprised at how much getting divorced costs.

It varies depending on where you live and how you do it, but according to MoneyHelper a couple could be looking at between £1,300 and £2,600 for an uncontested divorce and between £10,000 and £30,000 if it is a contested case - for example, you've failed to reach an agreement and the case is taken to court.

The cost can climb even higher if the case drags on.

Family court backlogs mean a quick resolution is almost unheard of - with Ministry of Justice figures showing the average divorce takes more than a year to complete.

So what do you need to know?

This table shows some of the main costs to consider when getting a divorce.

Can you do it for less?

Although the process had become a lot more straightforward with the introduction of no-fault divorces, some solicitors still take advantage, says Desmond O'Donnell, a partner in the family team at the legal firm Thomson Snell & Passmore.

"I say to my clients, you are more than capable of applying for a divorce without a solicitor - the court fee is £593. You get other solicitors who say 'let me do it for you' because they can charge the client for that and then costs go up to £600-800." Desmond O'Donnell

He says it is better to settle a separation outside court because taking a case to court "racks up costs".

"You get some solicitor firms who see it as a business rather than what is best for their client," he says.

"If you settle a case quickly you don't make money, so they almost encourage their client to go to court."

He recommends looking at other avenues such as mediation, collaborative law, arbitration and the process of "one couple, one lawyer" to avoid being "at the mercy of the court".

Less lawyer routes

With mediation, through which a couple resolves issues with a mediator, "emails are not flying back and forth" between solicitors and matters can be resolved "within hours", Mr O'Donnell says.

Another way of handling a separation is arbitration - a private system in which spouses choose an arbitrator to hear their case in their chambers.

"It's having a judge who has the time to give your case the attention it needs and because it is much quicker, there is less correspondence so it is going to be cheaper," Mr O'Donnell says.

'Collaborative' lawyers

He also draws attention to collaborative law, which involves specially trained solicitors meeting for roundtable meetings for the benefit of the family.

"As there is more realism brought into it and we're not trying to bluff each other, very often we agree on things outside the traditional court system more quickly and cheaply than the traditional system," he says.

Sharing a solicitor?

Opting for "one couple, one lawyer", with the solicitor acting for both spouses, can cost £3,000 to £4,000 plus VAT - so "much cheaper", Mr O'Donnell says.

But this only works if the couple are on amicable terms.

Finances are not sorted with divorce

A common misconception is that divorce and finances are dealt with in the same processes - they are not, says Zoe Rose, senior associate at Hedges Law.

"I often say to clients you probably won't need a lawyer to help you with the divorce application because if you can do online shopping you can do the relevant online application with the court directly." Zoe Rose

But, she says, with discussions about finances and children people "should be spending some money getting some decent legal advice".

"You do the simple paperwork and come to me for the strategic stuff about what happens with assets and what happens with your children and what that looks like," she says.

How you communicate with your lawyer is key

How people communicate with lawyers is important in keeping costs down, according to Ms Rose.

"If you send your solicitor two emails and then automatically ring them, your solicitor won't have had time to look at your email and won't give you the nuanced advice you want," she says.

"Whereas if you send them a couple of emails and then book a slot later, what you will get back out will be much better."

Here are Ms Rose's other tips to keep fees down:

  • Only speak to your lawyer about legal advice as you are charged for the time you spend with them;
  • Avoid asking the same questions more than once;
  • Keep ongoing correspondence to a minimum and if you want to ask if an email has been received, your solicitor's assistant is the best person to answer this.

'Train wreck break-up prompted me to set up amicable divorce service'

In the course of writing this article, we came across Kate Daly, a relationship counsellor and the co-founder of Amicable.

The company first offers a 15-minute free advice consultation and then follows this up by helping couples decide how to divide their money and property, or with arrangements for their children.

Once they have a financial agreement, this is drafted into a consent order and sent to court for a judge to review.

It means no lawyers are needed and, the theory goes, results in an amicable divorce.

"I came up with the idea for this business off the back of my own awful train wreck divorce - it was really terrible," she says.

"It cost huge amounts of money and it created untold emotional damage, even now it still plays out in my family. A horrible divorce is like the gift that keeps on giving - it just stalks you through all life events.

"When I went through mine, I thought 'what have I done wrong to create this awful situation where we are both spending so much money and ended up in such a bad place?'"

Most couples could do a simple divorce - that is, one with no finances to sort out - themselves, she says, but it is "trickier" to do a consent order and "definitely worth getting legal advice at that point".

"We're on a mission to change the way society thinks about relationships ending and to get to a point where we can say love can end and that doesn't have to be a fight, and it doesn't have to be a failure," she says.

Four topics elicited the most consternation in our mailbox this week: pensioners being drawn into tax, the price of pints, banned adverts and Royal Mail cutbacks.

On Tuesday we revealed that 650,000 extra pensioners will have to pay income tax for the first time following an inflation-linked 8.5% rise in the state pension which will take many with additional income over the (currently frozen) tax threshold of £12,570.

I have a service pension which I've been living off for 10 years and this month qualify for my state pension. Couldn't believe it when my service pension was nearly £200 less due to tax!! They give with one and take with another!! Brilliant!! I guess I should have expected it!! Ian, Fareham
Thanks to the tax bracket not being raised in line with inflation, I am now paying tax on my pension... Pointless the Tories keeping on about triple lock as I get an increase in one hand then take it out with the other. Mr c k

Others asked if the move meant pensioners were being effectively "taxed twice"...

Why should pensioners have to pay tax on personal/private pensions when they have already paid tax on it during their working lives. Surely the government is getting double payment of taxes? Sarah

This isn't quite right - as pension income is only taxed when it's withdrawn, ie when you retire.

Making pension contributions during your working life is tax free within certain limits .

Away from pensions, on Wednesday we reported that a Nationwide advert starring Dominic West would be banned following 282 complaints.

The watchdog found it was misleading consumers into thinking the building society – unlike its rivals – would not be closing its branches.

Some of our readers have seen first-hand closures, in contrast to the advert's message...

Our Nationwide branch closed after they stated it would remain open for at least two years. Goldie30
Good! I am glad that the Nationwide adverts have been banned as they did, indeed, close last year the Blaby, Leicestershire branch of their bank. So the adverts always left a very bitter taste in the mouth. Well done ASA for calling Nationwide out on this. Alan Henry

Looking at the breakdown of the cost of a pint we posted on Thursday...

...we had an interesting question from Pete on non-alcoholic drinks...

Why do alcohol-free drinks cost so much in pubs and restaurants? Prices are often the same and yet tax is lower. Petethepilot

Although the same duty doesn't apply on alcohol-free drinks, they can be more expensive to manufacture.

Many breweries make their standard beer then "remove" the alcohol after - adding an extra step to an already expensive process, using the same ingredients and methods etc.

Historically, it's also been brewed in much smaller quantities (naturally driving price up), although as its popularity continues to rise we may see that change. There's also development and marketing costs.

Another reader, John, said...

Having just returned from a holiday in mainland Spain - I find myself asking why the cost of a large draft local beer (pint) - even in many restaurants - is only about €3. Which is the equivalent of about £2.56. Yet another example of rip-off Britain!!! JohnMette

On Wednesday, Royal Mail revealed it may slash  1,000 jobs as part of cutbacks including reducing second-class deliveries to three days a week, prompting comments like this...

So now we all pay for 1st class post and get 2nd class service.  Liyzlg
