TAGAYTAY TRAVEL GUIDE with Sample Itinerary & Budget

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

Long before Manila-dwellers began a long-distance affair with the highlands of Baguio, Sagada and Kalinga, they have been in a long-standing romance with Tagaytay. It’s not a high-maintenance relationship. The physical connection is there. It is geographically close, easily accessible, and it doesn’t demand too much time or money. It’s the kind that will last over more decades.

Tagaytay is no stranger to me. I live in a Batangas town not too far away from Tagaytay. For the longest time, every time I would come back home, the van that I was riding would drive through the city. And since I started earning on my own, it would be my go-to place for clarity or peace of mind. And I’m not alone in this.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING TAGAYTAY

Located just around 60km from Manila, Tagaytay City has always been the go-to destination for those wishing to escape the searing heat of the capital, especially in the summer season. They come here for two reasons: a cooler climate and a breathtaking view of Taal Lake and Volcano.

Most people think that Taal Volcano is the small cratered hill on one end of the island in the middle of the lake often depicted in postcards and photographs. The truth is, that is Binintiang Malaki , just one of the volcano’s many cones and craters. Taal Lake itself was actually the caldera of an enormous ancient volcano formed after cataclysmic eruptions in the prehistoric times. The only active part now is that island in the middle of the lake called Volcano Island .

Like a giant balcony with a fantastic view, Tagaytay is perched on the northern ridges of Taal Lake, attracting thousands of vacationers and supporting its massive tourism industry. Its highways and inner alleys are lined with a wide array of accommodations, from luxury villas to budget hotels, and restaurants, ranging from fine dining to its homegrown fast food places.

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Tagaytay is also a great base for travelers who wish to explore neighboring municipalities like Alfonso and Amadeo, and even parts of Batangas like the volcano itself, Nasugbu, and Lemery.

Tagaytay takes a rectangular shape on the map, so it’s easy to navigate. At the very center of it is the Tagaytay Rotonda, from which stems out four main roads:

travel brochure ng tagaytay

  • Emilio Aguinaldo Highway , which connects Tagaytay to Imus, Dasmarinas, and Manila.
  • Tagaytay-Calamba Road , which links the city to the towns of Laguna. If you’re coming from South Luzon Express Way (SLEX), you’ll eventually hit this road going to Tagaytay.
  • Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway , which can take you to Alfonso (Cavite) and Nasugbu and Lemery (Batangas).
  • Tagaytay-Talisay Road , which cuts across a forested slope to Talisay (Batangas), where Taal Volcano is located.

Being familiar with these roads will make your travel planning a lot easier, especially when picking a hotel and places to visit.

Here are more useful bits about Tagaytay.

  • Language: Tagalog is used by most. But English is widely understood and spoken.
  • Currency: Philippine peso (PHP, ₱). PHP100 is around USD 1.90, EUR 1.69, SGD 2.57 (as of April 2019).
  • Modes of payment: Credit cards are accepted by many establishments but CASH is still king (and queen) in Tagaytay.
  • Electricity Info: 220V, 60Hz. Plug and socket Type A.

WHERE TO STAY IN TAGAYTAY

In places like El Nido or Batanes, I usually don’t mind staying in a guest house with no view and no frills because I would be spending much of my time outside anyway. But Tagaytay is one of those destinations where accommodations can make or break a trip. It’s all about the ambience and the experience. Whether you’re visiting Tagaytay to unwind, attend a conference, or have a romantic weekend, it is important to consider the location.

Best Area to Stay in Tagaytay

Tagaytay has become a major tourist magnet that it has become almost synonymous with this corner of Cavite. Property-owners often market and label their hotels, lodges or guesthouses “Tagaytay” even when they are technically located in surrounding municipalities like Alfonso, Silang, and Mendez. Try to keep that in mind when searching for a place to stay.

For tourists, there are three main areas that are great bases when exploring Tagaytay and nearby towns:

  • Tagaytay Rotonda Area. Often casually referred to as simply Olivarez. It is the center of the city. As explained above, the major roads running across the city start or end here. It is surrounded by countless lodging and dining options. It is also the main transportation hub.
  • Along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway. This is a little bit farther than the Rotonda area, but this has the best view of the lake and the volcano, provided that you book a hotel on the lakeside. This is also where SkyRanch and Ayala Malls Serin are located.
  • Along Tagaytay-Calamba Road. This area is closest to tourist spots like Tagaytay Picnic Grove and People’s Park in the Sky. Lots of restaurant and hotel options too, with some also offering a good view of the lake.

Personally, I like staying along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Road because it’s a lot quieter and has the best view of the lake. If you don’t trust my word, here are the top budget hotels in Tagaytay as scored by Agoda users.

Top Budget Hotels and BnBs in Tagaytay

The best hotels in Tagaytay are expensive, but there are some exceptions. Bed-and-breakfast places also offer a great alternative. Here’s a list compiled using Agoda reviews.

Top Apartments and Condo for Rent in Tagaytay

If budget is an issue, then ditch the hotel and consider staying at a BnB, guesthouse, or apartment for rent, which are significantly cheaper. There’s been a considerable number of condo units for rent at Wind Residences (SMDC) along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway and Tagaytay Prime Residences near Rotonda. Here are the top rated apartments/condo units on Agoda.

How to get to tagaytay, manila to tagaytay by bus.

travel brochure ng tagaytay

You can catch a bus to Tagaytay at the following terminals.

  • Uniwide Coastal Mall in Paranaque. Make your way to the Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), also called South West Integrated Provincial Terminal. Board a bus bound for Tagaytay, Mendez (neighboring town), or Nasugbu. This bus will be taking Emilio Aguinaldo Highway.
  • DLTB Terminal at LRT Buendia area (near LRT Gil Puyat Station), Pasay City. Board the bus bound for either Nasugbu or Calatagan. This will be taking South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and Carmona Exit and will pass through Tagaytay.

Fare: Around P87. Travel time is 2-3 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Might be much longer during rush hour.

Some important reminders.

  • DO NOT TAKE THE BUS TO LEMERY. Lemery-bound buses take the SLEX + STAR Toll. It doesn’t pass through Tagaytay. Buses are not allowed to take Diokno Highway, which connects Tagaytay and Lemery. I know this because I’m from Lemery and our house is very close to Diokno Highway.
  • If your hotel is located along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway and you’re on a Nasugbu or Calatagan bus, you don’t need to get off at Olivarez or Rotonda. You can stay in the bus and tell the conductor to drop you off at the hotel.
  • If you’re going to SkyRanch or Wind Residences , there’s a big chance the bus will not really pass by either even if the driver or conductor says so. Most buses take Mahogany Avenue, which bypasses a section of Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway approaching Mendez. Instead, they will drop you off at the Petron Gas Station. That’s okay, though, because it’s within walking distance. (SkyRanch is a longer walk but very manageable.) SEE MAP BELOW.

Manila to Tagaytay by Van

You can also ride a shared van to Tagaytay. Vans bound for Nasugbu, Calatagan or Lemery pass through Tagaytay. You can find one at the following places.

  • Starmall EDSA-Shaw. You’ll find vans bound for Lemery at the terminal in front of the mall, along EDSA.
  • Alabang. There are vans bound for Tagaytay at Festival Mall Alabang, near the Goldilocks exit. (I haven’t tried it, though.) In addition, there used to be vans bound for Lemery dispatched from the parking area of Starmall Alabang. But they already moved to the area behind the mall, near the ukay-ukay area and PNR Train counter. The number of available vans and passengers has been dwindling so you might be in for quite the wait.
  • Metropoint Mall. I’m not sure if there are still vans here going to Calatagan. There used to be, but I haven’t checked in a long time. If there still is, you can take the van going to Calatagan. If vans no longer operate here, you can cross to the other side of EDSA and catch a bus to Calatagan instead.

Whatever you take, tell the driver to drop you off in Tagaytay.

Fare is P180-P200, depending on which part of Manila you’re originating. It’s pricier because vans behave like point-to-point shuttles. Even though you’re alighting in Tagaytay, you’re still paying for the full journey. A passenger getting off in Tagaytay pays the same as another getting off in Batangas.

Important reminders:

  • If you’re taking a van to Lemery, tell the driver to drop you off in Tagaytay. Unlike their bus counterparts, Lemery-bound vans usually pass through Tagaytay. However, there are instances when the driver chooses to take the SLEX-STAR Tollway route. It usually happens when there is heavy traffic in Tagaytay/Santa Rosa areas. To be sure, let the driver know that your destination is Tagaytay so he won’t take any detour.
  • Vans don’t follow any fixed schedule. The vehicle will NOT leave the terminal unless it is full. If you’re in a hurry and there’s only one vacant seat, you can pay for it and the driver will gladly start the journey. If time is of the essence and there are a lot of empty seats, take the bus instead.

HOW TO GET AROUND TAGAYTAY

There are no taxis in Tagaytay, and Grab doesn’t have any presence either. There are only three modes of transportation available:

  • Jeepney. When traveling within the city, the most usual way is by jeepney. From Olivarez/Rotonda, you can take a jeepney to any direction. You can also ride one from any point along the highway back to the city center. Minimum fare is P9, which increases as you go father.
  • Bus. You can also take the bus if you’re coming from Rotonda area and going to Mendez, Alfonso, Nasugbu or any destination along Nasugbu-Tagaytay Highway.
  • Tricycle. This is the closest thing to a taxi that you can get. You can charter a tricycle to take you straight to your destination. When I asked, “special trips” within the city cost P100. Special, meaning you won’t be sharing the tricycle with anyone else. But if you’re going to the city center, you can pay the per-person charge, which should be around P20. Maybe higher or lower, depending on distance.

THINGS TO DO IN TAGAYTAY & NEARBY TOWNS

Taal volcano.

UPDATE! Taal Volcano recently erupted and is closed to the public.

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Tagaytay offers the best views of Taal Volcano. But you know what’s better than admiring it from afar? Being on the volcano itself. From Tagaytay, you can travel to the Batangan town of Talisay, where you can charter a boat that can take you to the volcano island. Once there, you’ll start your trek to the breathtaking caldera. Good if you’re a group so you could split the expenses.

How to get there: From Tagaytay, you can charter a tricycle to take you to Talisay for P150-200. Then, find a boat, which costs P2000 (maximum of 6 pax). It’s also possible to reach Talisay by jeepney, but I don’t have the details.

I’m not fully familiar with this route, to be honest. I’ve been to Taal Volcano and hiked to its main caldera before, but I didn’t come from Tagaytay. I went straight to Talisay via Tanauan.

SkyRanch Tagaytay

travel brochure ng tagaytay

SkyRanch is a relatively new attraction in Tagaytay. Perched on a cliff, overlooking the lake, this is an amusement park built for the enjoyment of the whole family. There are rides for kids and activities for the kids-at-heart. The most arresting structure is the SkyEye , a 63-meter ferris wheel with 32 gondolas. It’s also lined with restaurants and food kiosks!

Hours open Monday-Friday, 10am-10pm Saturday-Sunday, 8am-10pm

Entrance Fee Weekdays: P80 Weekends: P100

Here are the attractions at SkyRanch and the corresponding admission fees.

Tagaytay Picnic Grove

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Another family-friendly park in Tagaytay. For the longest time, this was the go-to place for relaxation, but a lot has changed (or have not changed) over the years. More attractions like the zipline and cable car ride were introduced, which are great for families. I personally think the park itself has lost its main appeal. But check it out regardless.

Entrance fee: P50

Parking Fee: P35, cars; P50, vans or jeepneys.

Zipline & Cable Car Rates: Weekdays: 1-way ride, P200; 2-way ride, P300. Weekend/Holidays: 1-way ride, P300; 2-way ride, P400.

Hut/Cottage Rental: P100, P150, P300, P500

Operating hours: 7am-7pm

People’s Park in the Sky

It used to be known as Palace in the Sky. Built under Marcos in 1979, it was supposed to be a guest house for visiting US President Ronald Reagan. But due to turning political tides back then, the “palace” was not finished and the visit cancelled. After the EDSA revolution, the name changed to People’s Park in the Sky.

Today, it hasn’t been well-maintained but remains a top attraction in Tagaytay because of the fantastic vista. After all, it stands at the highest point of Tagaytay, allowing a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape.

How to get there: From Olivarez, charter a tricycle for P150 for special trip or P50 per person.

Puzzle Mansion

Puzzle-lovers unite! The Puzzle Mansion in Tagaytay’s Barangay Asisan houses the world’s largest collection of jigsaw puzzles — all 1028 pieces of them — as certified by the Guiness Book of World Records. This was owned by Georgina Gil-Lacuna who collected these puzzles from her travels.

Entrance fee: P100

Hours open: 8am-5pm

How to get there: From Olivarez/Rotonda, ride a jeepney bound for Alfonso or Nasugbu. Get off at Brgy. Asisan. You can tell the driver to drop you off at the corner going to Puzzle Mansion. Fare: P15. Then hail a tricycle to take you to Puzzle House. Fare: P100.

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Caleruega is located in Nasugbu, Batangas, but it is easily accessible from Tagaytay. The place got its name from the municipality of Caleruega in Spain, the birthplace of the father of the Order of the Preachers, Saint Dominic de Guzman. It was built to serve as a venue for contemplation, but has made a name for itself over the years as one of the most well-known wedding venues in the country. It also harbors well-maintained retreat houses and well-manicured gardens.

How to get there: At Olivarez/Rotonda, take the jeepney bound for Nasugbu and tell the driver to drop you off at Hillcrest/Evercrest. Fare: P25. From KC Hillcrest entrance, hail a tricycle to Caleruega Chapel. Fare: P50.

Fantasy World

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Fantasy World is an unfinished theme park project in the middle of the rolling hills of Lemery, Batangas. (Yep, it’s in Lemery!) Although the construction was halted, they were able to build the castle, which was the park’s centerpiece.

Over the past years, it has become a filming location for movies like Got 2 Believe (starring Claudine Barretto and Rico Yan) and Fantastica (Vice Ganda) and TV shows like GMA 7’s Majika (Angel Locsin, Dennis Trillo).

The rides are not operational, but the park and the castle remains Instagram-worthy. It’s a favorite prenup spot too.

Entrance fee: P100 per person. This used to be P1000 for a group of 10, but this has been changed in November 2019.

How to get there: From Olivarez, ride a jeepney or bus to Boundary (Cavite-Batangas boundary). Fare: P25 for jeepney, P39 for bus. At the boundary, ride a jeepney bound for Lemery and ask to be dropped off in front of Fantasy World. Fare: P18. If there are no jeepneys, you can take a tricycle but it’s pricey. Fare is P200 per ride (not per person).

Tip: There is a cafe nearby called “ Brewed For You .” If you’re visiting around lunch time or you just get hungry, you can stop by and have a bowl of Batangas lomi (P100) and a cup of kapeng barako (P40).

Tagaytay Food Trip

One of the things my cousins and I used to do when we were kids was count the number of restaurants when we were passing through Tagaytay. Many of them are standing strong to this day. From local bulaluhan to western restaurants to food parks to fast food chains, there’s no shortage of dining places in Tagaytay.

Leslie’s and Josephine Restaurant are two local favorites for families. Don’t forget to order a bowl of sinful bulalo! If you’re celebrating something special or you’re simply after ambiance and elegance, there’s Antonio’s Restaurant and Sonya’s Garden (farther in Alfonso).

Bag of Beans has also made a name for themselves for their generous servings of scrumptious dishes. Aside from their main branch along Mendez Crossing, they have five other branches now including one at Summit Ridge (near Robinson’s Supermarket and SM Wind Residences) and one near Silang Crossing (Athena). Try their roast beef!

travel brochure ng tagaytay

There budget-friendly places too. Mushroom Burger is the first that comes to mind. It’s a fast-food-style resto featuring mushrooms as their main ingredients. If you’re staying along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway, you can easily get here. If you’re coming from SkyRanch, it’s just a 10-minute walk away.

SAMPLE TAGAYTAY ITINERARY

Below is a sample overnight Tagaytay itinerary, good for a weekend. It assumes you’re a party of two, splitting some of the costs and taking public transportation from Manila.

Note that the bulk of the cost is the zipline, which costs P300 on weekdays and P400 on weekends. If you’re not interested in this, you can skip this too.

If you decide to skip Fantasy World and Zipline, the total cost will be pushed down to only around P2800 (USD 54, SGD 73, EUR 48) per person.

If you want to keep track of your expenses when traveling around Tagaytay, download the LISTA app! It’s a mobile app that will help you watch your spending so you know you’re not going over your set budget and avoid running short of funds! It was originally meant for small businesses, but guess what? Travelers can use it, too!

All you need to do is enter how much budget you have for the trip and as you explore, type your expenses. The app will do the rest. It will tell you how much you still have left. It works offline so no internet connection needed.

Any more helpful detailed instructions other than “van terminal near the station” for LRT Gil Puyat? Would like to find that FX terminal. (By the way, no signs for visiting commuters that says LRT Buendia, just LRT “Gil Puyat”.) Second question: do you know that the DLTB terminal there is still running services from that terminal to Tagaytay, and have not been moved to PITX?

Yosh Dimen

Hi! We checked again today and found that there are no longer vans bound for Lemery near the LRT station. But the DLTB bus terminal still operates there.

We’ll update the post accordingly.

Thanks so much for checking that question about Tagaytay transport from around LRT Gul Puyat.

ABOUT TAGAYTAY CITY

Fun facts about tagaytay city.

  • Tagaytay is technically part of Cavite province not Batangas.
  • The name “Tagaytay” comes from the words “taga” meaning to cut, and “Itay,” referring to one’s father. According to legend, a father and son hunting down a wild boar suddenly found themselves at the receiving end of the animal’s rampage.
  • With an elevation of 634 meters above sea level, Tagaytay’s average temperature is 24 degrees Celsius. The lowest ever recorder temperature was in January 2014, when temperatures plunged to 18 degrees Celsius.
  • Taal Volcano is NOT part of Tagaytay City. It belongs to 2 municipalities and a city in Batangas - Talisay, San Nicolas and Batangas City.
  • Tagaytay also houses malls like Ayala Malls, SM Malls, Robinsons and Filinvest Lifemalls and attractions like Sky Ranch.

Travel Insurance

One of the most popular tourist destinations in Luzon , Tagaytay is perfect for someone who wants a quick escape from the busy city life.  It has various leisure spots where you can create unforgettable memories, fantastic restaurants, nice hotels, and of course cool weather to complete that much needed weekend getaway.  With its location being less than two hours away from Manila, Tagaytay is truly a must-place to visit when on the island.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Tagaytay City summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Tagaytay City in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

Suggested Budget

Use the chart below to get an idea of how much to budget daily.  Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.   AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 12-25 PHP ($.24–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  WayAway , Kiwi or Expedia .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to Tagaytay City.  Learn what you need to know BEFORE you go!

Tips & Hacks

he following are our Top 10 Tips when visiting this destination in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Tagaytay City, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel or resort front desk as they are more likely to give you reliable information than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling Tagaytay City or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Its stunning natural scenery, including a panoramic view of Taal Lake and Taal Volcano, attracts tourists from all over the country.

Dating back to the pre-colonial era, Tagaytay has a rich history and was once inhabited by the Tagalog people. During the Spanish colonial period, the city became a favorite summer retreat for affluent families from Manila , who built vacation homes in the area. Today, Tagaytay is a bustling tourist destination that offers a wide range of attractions and activities for visitors to explore and enjoy.

The Cool Climate and Enchanting Landscape of Tagaytay

Tagaytay’s cool climate is one of its most enchanting attributes, drawing visitors seeking respite from the sweltering heat of the lowlands. Situated approximately 2,000 feet above sea level, this picturesque city nestled in the Southern Tagalog region of the Philippines enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year.

The high elevation contributes to a refreshing and invigorating atmosphere, making it an ideal escape from the tropical heat. Aside from its climate, Tagaytay boasts a stunning landscape that captivates travelers with its natural beauty.

The city is characterized by rolling hills and verdant valleys, creating a postcard-worthy backdrop that seems right out of a fairytale. As you traverse through Tagaytay’s winding roads, you’ll be enveloped by lush greenery on both sides, providing a soothing and serene ambiance.

What truly sets Tagaytay apart is its remarkable panoramic views. Whether you stand atop cliffs or overlook vast stretches of land from elevated spots within the city, your eyes will feast upon breathtaking vistas at every turn.

The scenic beauty is further enhanced by wisps of mist that often hover over the landscape during cooler months. These ethereal mists add an element of mystery and allure to this already picturesque setting.

Proximity to Manila: A Convenient Retreat

What makes Tagaytay even more enticing is its close proximity to Manila . Less than two hours away by car, this charming city provides an ideal weekend retreat for urban dwellers seeking respite from their daily routines. Whether you are looking for a quick day trip or planning an extended vacation, Tagaytay presents itself as an accessible haven that allows you to unwind and reconnect with nature without venturing too far from civilization.

Transportation Options: Flexibility at Your Disposal

Fortunately, reaching Tagaytay is hassle-free due to several transportation options available to travelers. For those who prefer comfort and convenience, private vehicles are the most popular choice.

The well-maintained South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) connects Manila directly to Tagaytay City via various exit points, ensuring a smooth journey with minimal traffic disruptions. Alternatively, public transportation provides an economical means of reaching Tagaytay.

Buses ply multiple routes between major terminals in Metro Manila —such as Cubao in Quezon City or Pasig—directly to Tagaytay City’s bus terminals. These buses offer regular departures throughout the day and cater to both locals and tourists seeking affordable travel options.

To add further flexibility, van services are also available for hire. These shared or private vans can be found at designated pick-up points in Metro Manila and provide a convenient door-to-door service, ensuring a stress-free journey to Tagaytay.

For those seeking a touch of adventure, motorcycles-for-hire, locally known as “habal-habal,” can take you from nearby towns and drop you off at your desired destination in Tagaytay. This mode of transportation is particularly popular among thrill-seekers who want to explore the scenic countryside while enjoying the refreshing breeze.

Overall, with its strategic location and various transportation options, getting to Tagaytay is remarkably straightforward regardless of your preference or budget. So pack your bags, leave behind the city’s chaos, and embark on an unforgettable journey to this tranquil haven where nature’s beauty awaits.

Taal Volcano: A Majestic Attraction

No visit to Tagaytay would be complete without experiencing the awe-inspiring Taal Volcano. Considered one of the country’s most iconic natural landmarks, Taal Volcano rests within Taal Lake—a lake within an island within another lake—making it an extraordinary geological formation.

The volcano itself is composed of multiple craters, with the main crater boasting a serene yet captivating lake. The emerald-green waters of the lake contrast beautifully with the surrounding lush landscape.

Visitors can choose to hike up to the volcano’s rim or take a boat tour to explore its stunning beauty up close. Whichever option you choose, you’re in for an unforgettable encounter with nature’s grandeur.

Standing at various viewpoints in Tagaytay, you’ll be treated to panoramic vistas that showcase the majestic Taal Volcano and its surrounding landscape. Step-by-Step Travel Guide to TAGAYTAY

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Just a few hours away from Manila, Tagaytay has been a favorite destination for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Because of its proximity to the metro, it is perfect for a quick weekend getaway or even a day trip if you only have a day to unwind. The cold weather and the marvelous view of Taal Lake and Volcano are enough to give you a relaxing time, but the food and other attractions definitely give tourists more reasons to visit.

Tagaytay temporarily closed the first few months of 2020 due to the eruption of the Taal Volcano in January and the community quarantine in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it has reopened since. Attractions and establishments have opened their doors again for tourists who want to get away from the heat of the city.

ATTENTION! Don’t forget to accomplish all the requirements prior to your visit. Take note of the new normal travel rules and guidelines and make sure to comply with them. It’s best to check the official websites or Facebook pages of the Tagaytay Tourism Office, the Tagaytay local government, and the Cavite Provincial Government for updates and announcements.

Getting There

NOTE: This section is a work in progress. Due to the pandemic, changes may have occurred. Please contact the LGU, terminal, or bus company directly for the latest schedule, routes, and fares.

Because new routes and schemes are being implemented since the pandemic, you can find most buses bound for Batangas at Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX). According to the information displayed at the terminal, Batman StarExpress Corporation (BSC) and San Agustin Transport run the PITX-Nasugbu route via Aguinaldo Highway.

As of October 2020, here’s the schedule.

You may inform the conductor that you are going to Tagaytay. Usually, the bus will drop you off anywhere along the Nasugbu-Tagaytay Road. Ask the driver or the conductor if there are specific drop-off points and alight at the bus stop near your specific destination in Tagaytay.

  • Do not board a bus bound to Lemery. This bus will take SLEX and STAR Toll and will not pass through Tagaytay.
  • If your hotel is along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway and you’re on a bus going to Calatagan or Nasugbu, you can ask the conductor to drop you off at the hotel. You don’t need to get off at Olivarez or Rotonda.
  • If you’re on the way to SkyRanch, the bus won’t actually pass by the amusement park. You will be dropped off at Petron Gas Station and from there, you can walk going to SkyRanch.

Another way to get to Tagaytay is by riding a shared van. You may get on a van going to Calatagan, Nasugbu, or Lemery and get off at Tagaytay. You may find these vans in front of Starmall Edsa-Shaw, at the terminal along EDSA, at Festival Mall Alabang, and at Metropoint Mall.

The fare ranges from P180 to P200 depending on which part of Manila you’re coming from. These are more expensive than a bus ride because these vans work like point-to-point shuttles. Don’t forget to ask the driver to drop you off in Tagaytay.

  • Vans don’t have a fixed schedule and they don’t leave the terminal until it’s full. If you’re in a rush and there’s still a lot of empty seats, you can take the bus instead.
  • If you got on a van bound to Lemery, tell the driver to drop you off in Tagaytay. Vans to Lemery usually pass through Tagaytay, but to be sure the driver won’t take a detour, let him know your destination.

Tourist Spots & Attractions

ATTENTION! Because of the pandemic, the opening hours and rates might change from time to time. Make sure you check the official websites or Facebook pages of the attractions and tourist spots prior to your trip.

Taal Volcano View

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Asta (@astalavistaph)

Tagaytay has a fantastic view of the Taal Volcano. Most of the private establishments and public roadside spots offer a fetching view of the volcano jutting out of the calm waters of the lake. You can choose to admire it while dining at a restaurant, sipping a drink from a café, from the balcony or window of your staycation hotel, or by stopping at a vacant roadside viewing spot. Tagaytay serves as a huge balcony for tourists and locals alike.

People’s Park in the Sky

Built in 1979, it was originally called Palace in the Sky. It was constructed during the Marcos era to be a guest house for US President Ronald Reagan, but the construction halted when the visit was canceled. Entrance Fee: P50 Getting There: Rent a tricycle at Olivarez to take you to People’s Park in the Sky. The fare is P50 per person or P150 for special trip.

Puzzle Mansion

travel brochure ng tagaytay

The Puzzle Mansion currently has the largest collection of jigsaw puzzles in the world as recognized by Guinness Book of World records. The museum holds over a thousand jigsaw puzzles owned by Georgina Gil-Lacuna. It is located in Barangay Asisan, in what used to be the rest house of the Gil-Lacuna family.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM Entrance Fee: P100 Getting There: Board a jeepney bound for Alfonso or Nasugbu at Olivarez/Rotonda (P15). Tell the driver that you’ll get off at Barangay Asisan. Make sure that he will drop you off at the corner going to Puzzle Mansion. Then, take a tricycle to Puzzle Mansion (P100).

Fruit and Plant Shopping

Tagaytay is also home to numerous roadside fruit and plant stalls. Aside from the sweets, fresh produce and colorful flowers are some of the many things that tourists bring home from their Tagaytay trip. There’s also the fruit market near the junction of Santa Rosa and Tagaytay. For plantitos and plantitas , some even go further the narrow barangay streets to buy cheaper plants.

Twin Lakes Shopping Village

travel brochure ng tagaytay

Contrary to popular belief, Twin Lakes is not really under the jurisdiction of Tagaytay but of Laurel, Batangas. But because of its proximity to Tagaytay, it is understandably labeled as such. Located near the boundary of Tagaytay in Cavite and Nasugbu in Batangas, it has become a favorite stopover or side trip for many road trippers. There are dining places, a convenience store, a supermarket, ATMs, restrooms, and great views of the Taal Lake and the Taal Volcano.

Also known as Transfiguration Chapel, Caleruega Church is one of the most well-known wedding venues in the Philippines. It is located in Nasugbu, Batangas, but you can easily visit from Tagaytay. This church also has retreat houses and beautiful gardens.

Opening Hours: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM (Monday – Sunday), 11:00 AM (Sunday Mass Schedule) Entrance Fee: P30 Getting There: Take a jeepney bound for Nasugbu at Olivarez/Rotonda (P25). Ask the driver to drop you off at Hillcrest/Evercrest. Take a tricycle from Hillcrest to Caleruega Chapel (P50).

Best Time to Visit

travel brochure ng tagaytay

December and January are usually the coldest months, but the temperature is still pretty cool year-round. If you want to explore a few tourist spots during your visit, it is best to go from November to May when there’s less chance of heavy rainfall.

Recommended Restaurants

  • Leslie’s: Located in Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway, Leslie’s is a local favorite. Make sure you order a bowl of Bulalo that is perfect for the cold weather.
  • Josphine Restaurant: Another local favorite, especially for families, Josephine Restaurant is another place where you can get a hearty bowl of Bulalo or Bulalo Steak. Located along Aguinaldo Highway, the restaurant also offers a great view of the Taal Volcano.
  • Antonio’s Restaurant: If you’re celebrating a special occasion, Antonio’s restaurant is an elegant place where you can dine. The parking lot seems full whenever we pass by. We love the Mayura Beef Burger and the Fresh Corned Beef. It’s on the pricey side of the spectrum.
  • Sonya’s Garden: Sonya’s Garden has a restaurant, bed and breakfast, and spa. This garden located in Alfonso, Cavite is perfect for those who want a more relaxing ambiance.
  • Bag of Beans: This homegrown restaurant has already made a name for itself because of the generous servings of its dishes. They currently have 6 branches in Tagaytay with the main branch near Mendez Crossing.
  • Mushroomburger: Mushroomburger is a budget-friendly restaurant located along Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway. It’s a fast-food-style restaurant that features food with mushrooms as the main ingredients. This place is just a 10-minute walk from SkyRanch so you can have your early lunch here before going to the amusement park.
  • Balay Dako: This restaurant is famous for its freshly cooked piaya . This popular restaurant has spacious dining areas — both indoor and al fresco — and a great view of the Taal Lake and the Taal Volcano. It also has a pasalubong shop located near the waiting area.

Practical Travel Tips

  • Always check for updates. Some adjustments have to be taken for establishments and attractions to operate during the new normal. Don’t forget to contact or visit the official websites or Facebook pages of the attractions and activities for announcements and updates before going.
  • Bring sun protection. Although Tagaytay has a relatively cooler temperature, the sun can be unforgiving sometimes, especially in summer. Don’t forget to bring a hat/cap and sunglasses or apply sunscreen.
  • Practice Sustainable and Responsible Tourism. Support the local community by purchasing their products. Help lessen the trash by bringing reusable water bottles and eco-bags to avoid the use of single-use plastic.
  • Be mindful of others. Respect other people’s personal space and time. When taking photos, don’t take too long because others are waiting for their turn too. When walking on the street, make sure you are not blocking other passers-by. Avoid talking too loudly, especially if you are inside a museum or a sacred place.
  • Follow the town’s rules and regulations. Make sure you know the travel safety protocols and requirements and follow them.

Tagaytay: the City I Love

Tagaytay is a city like no other. No neon lights but only the stars in the sky. No towering skyscrapers but only houses on the hills. No subways but only horseback riding. Nature and serenity abound in this city.

Situated at the elevated part of the province of Cavite and overlooking Taal Lake, Tagaytay City offers fresh air and a relaxed quality of life. It also gives a breathtaking view of Taal volcano, the smallest in the world, which is one of the factors for Tagaytay’s fertile soil. You’ll find plenty of flowers, fresh vegetables, and fruits sold along the highway.

Tagaytay

There are a thousand reasons why I love this city – the beautiful landscape, the cool weather, the natural breeze, and the delectable food. Most of all, it brings a sense of peace and solitude to the heart. It comes as no surprise why many residents from the capital of Manila drive an hour or more to Tagaytay City just to have a picnic or enjoy a sumptuous meal at one of the city’s restaurants.

Tagaytay

There are three things you can do when you visit Tagaytay:

  • For the active travellers, you can ride your bike downhill to Taal Lake or ride a horse in one of Tagaytay’s park. You can visit the Picnic Grove or near Josephine’s Restaurant for some horseback riding. Others can play golf in Tagaytay Highlands.
  • For food lovers, you can choose from the many restaurants and eateries built at the side of the hill giving you a beautiful view of Taal Volcano and Taal Lake. You can taste the delectable offerings at Antonio’s, Manos Greek Restaurant, Josephine’s, or Bag of Beans. The bone marrow soup at the local market is also a must-try.
  • For those seeking peace and quiet, you can stay overnight in one of the Bed & Breakfast inns or go on a spiritual reflection in one of the retreat houses there or simply enjoy an afternoon at a flower and plant garden. One of the popular destinations here is Sonya’s Garden.

And the favourite place where I often spend a weekend in Tagaytay is Casa MaRa. It’s my home away from home. The rustic house, decorated with capiz shells and wood, gives a feeling of simplicity. The pineapple plantation across the house makes it even homier as if I was living on a farm.

Casa MaRa Tagaytay

Life in Tagaytay may be slow. But it must be the number one reason I love it more. It just makes me forget about the fast-paced life in the capital. It reminds me that I should always stop and smell the roses.

This is my submission for the ‘3 Things in the City’ I Love contest by Velvet Escape, Traveldudes and Wimdu.

The smallest volcano in the world, the Taal Volcano is located in the center of Taal Lake. The best way to view the volcano is from the ridge high above in Tagaytay City. The best way to get to Tagaytay is to travel using the South Luzon Expressway and exiting at Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Location : Cavite City . Save on Google Maps .

Strategically located at the entrance of Manila Bay, this tadpole-shaped island played an important role in the defense of the Philippine capital during World War II. Today, Corregidor is maintained as a “museum” island. Here, you can find remnants of full-scale fortifications built by American and Filipino soldiers against the invading Japanese Imperial Army. From Manila, the ferry journey to Corregidor takes approximately 1.5 hours. The island has a small land area of around 5.5 sq. kilometers, so you can easily see most of the tunnels, barracks, artillery defenses, memorial sites, and other historical sites on a day trip

Aguinaldo Shrine in Kawit, Cavite, Philippines

Location : Kawit, 4104 Cavite . Save on Google Maps .

Aguinaldo Shrine and Museum (Aguinaldo Mansion) in Kawit is one of the Philippines’ most important historical sites and a highly popular tourist spot in Cavite Province. The shrine is the ancestral home of Emilio Aguinaldo, officially the first President of the Philippines and the site of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, which is commemorated as a national holiday on June 12 each year. The Museo ni Emilio Aguinaldo houses exhibits on Cavite during the Spanish colonial period, Cavite’s role as the cradle of the Philippine Revolution, and the life of Emilio Aguinaldo. The second level is the living space of the house, where you can see the living room, the bedrooms, dining area, and kitchen along with 19th-early 20th-century furniture and details of the art nouveau and art deco period. Another historical site worth visiting in Kawit is the St. Mary Magdalene Church or Kawit Church, one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. The construction of the present church was started in 1737.

After visiting the Aguinaldo Shrine, curiosity led me 10 kilometers farther northwest, to Cavite City, the former capital of the province. This city is not a popular destination among tourists, but might be worth a visit if you’re looking for interesting local eats near Kawit. Head to Rachie’s Snack House (646 P. Burgos Ave) for a taste if Puto Pao, a fusion of two Filipino favorites — puto (rice cake) and siopao (steamed bun). For home-cooked Caviteño dishes, grab a table at Bernie’s Kitchenette and try the Crispy Lao-lao (fried fish) with Sukang Cavite dip, Bacalao (sautéed salt cod), Pansit Pusit and other traditional heirloom specialties. When in Cavite City, take a photo stop at the imposing San Roque Parish Church, which dominates the city skyline with its 7-tier bell tower.
