Travel Hack Backpack Review | The Perfect Underseat Cabin Bag!

The Travel Hack Backpack 20l

I am a huge fan of travelling with a backpack. I like that they are hands-free and perfect for exploring cities and carrying around all day. One of my favourites is the Travel Hack Backpack! It was designed by Monica from The Travel Hack , a travel blogger I have been following for years!

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links. I may make a small commission on purchases made after clicking the link. For more information visit the Privacy and Disclosure Policy.

Being a traveller herself, she designed The Travel Hack backpack to be functional and stylish for women. What’s more, is it within the dimensions of Ryanair’s underseat cabin baggage allowance, so it flies for free !

Travel Hack Backpack

🎒Dimensions: 40x25x20

⚖️Weight: 0.6kg | Capacity: 20l

💻Laptop compartment: Up to 13″

⭐️Perfect for: Day trips, mini breaks or weekend getaways, on its own. Or paired with additional luggage for longer trips.

Travel Hack Stowaway Ladies Cabin Backpack

The Travel Hack backpack is made to a very high quality. I like the way it’s black and smart looking, making it practical for a wide range of uses. It comes with a leather look luggage tag and a tassel. For my personal preferences I removed the tassel. However, I kept the tag on so it looks more luggage like, rather than just another backpack!

It also has rose gold zips as well as a small ‘The Travel Hack’ engraved rose gold metallic plate on the front. The zips on the main compartment are large enough to get a padlock through if you felt like locking the main compartment. Sometimes I will do this when walking around busy cities on my own.

The Travel Hack Backpack Review

On the back is a strap, so the backpack can be slid over a suitcase handle . (I’ve been extremely tempted by the matching Travel Hack Suitcase too. But I don’t tend to use suitcases very often!). The straps and back are padded, making it very comfortable to wear for long amounts of time. The bottom is reinforced a little too!

The shape of the Travel Hack backpack maximises every last centimetre of the Ryanair underseat luggage allowance. Therefore, at time of writing, it flies free ! As Ryanair is one of the stingiest airlines for cabin luggage dimensions, if it fits for them, it’s likely to fit for the majority of other airlines too.

External Pockets

Not including the main compartment, there are 5 external pockets . Pockets are a MUST for me when looking for a backpack. On the front is a zipped pocket , it’s quite deep but narrow. I find that when the backpack is full, it’s better to have smaller, flatter items in this pocket.

One side has, what is called, a ‘ passport pocket ‘. It’s passport sized but like to keep my important documents in zipped pockets. As someone that loves water sports or going to the beach, I tend to keep a folded plastic bag in this pocket. That way if I end up with wet clothes or towels, I have a way of separating the wet stuff from the dry things!

I love the stretchy, expandable water bottle pocket . It holds my small water bottle without it being expanded. To fit larger bottles it has a zip on one side, creating a more ‘triangular’ shaped pocket. I can often reach round and get the bottle in and out of the pocket, without needing to remove the backpack!

Backpacks with 13" laptop compartment

On the back is a laptop compartment . The zip runs from the top of the backpack to the bottom, on one side. I have the 13″ 2020 MacBook Air and it fits perfectly into the pocket. I think it would be a bit of a squeeze if I had a case on it. However, as the backpack has a boxy design, I feel that’s it’s well protected though. My iPad in its keyboard case also fits perfectly.

My favourite pocket is the floating top pocket . It’s quite spacious and this is where I tend to keep stuff that I may want to have quick access to. I find that it’s a good spot to keep my sunglasses!

Main Compartment

The main compartment fully opens, similar to a suitcase. The internal fabric is a pale pink colour. Depending on the type of trip I’m taking I will position the zips differently. If I’m using the backpack more for luggage, I keep the zips together in a corner.

However, if I’m using it for a day trip, where I’m likely to be in and out of it multiple times, I keep them together near the top. More like a typical backpack. Otherwise I’m worried smaller items may fall out as it does open from the bottom corner!

Inside the Travel Hack Backpack

You can also buy a matching Travel Hack packing cube , designed to fit perfectly with the Stowaway backpack (see below).

I don’t tend to use packing cubes in smaller backpacks. I find I can fit more in without them. But as the Travel Hack backpack has a large rectangular internal area and opens like a suitcase, packing cubes do work well!

Internal Pockets

Inside the main compartment are 2 mesh pockets . These are located on the front panel. One at the top, one at the bottom. They are surprisingly large! I find that you need to keep in mind about over filling. Sometimes I end up filling the main area up so much that when I go to zip the front up, the 3D pockets are too full for it to be able to shut properly.

I tend to keep leads or things that I use a lot in the top pocket. When using it as a day bag, it’s helpful having that inside pocket near the top. It’s easy to access things without having to dig around to find things! I find it similar to the floating compartment but slightly more secure as it is ‘hidden’ by another zip.

Travel Hack Backpack internal pockets

Using The Travel Hack Backpack

When I fly with Ryanair the Travel Hack backpack is the first bag that I reach for as my cabin bag. It is great for a weekend city break but when I travel for a week or more with only hand luggage, I find that I need something a tiny bit bigger!

As well as international travel, The Travel Hack Backpack is great for UK weekend getaways. I’ve taken it camping, to hotels and when I went to stay with my friend for the weekend. It’s the perfect size for a couple of changes of clothes, pyjamas, camera, my Kindle, some overnight essentials and a few other bits.

Alternatively, it’s great for day trips when you may need some additional bits. Such as I went to the beach on the train I packed a towel and a blanket to sit on etc. When I went away for a week I used it in addition to another bag. The other bag had all my clothes and then I had all my other gadgets and extra bits in my Travel Hack backpack.

The Cabin Max Travel Hack Luggage Range

As well as the Travel Hack Backpack (which now comes in 4 colours: black, olive, navy and leopard), there’s also:

  • a cabin suitcase
  • a 30l tote bag
  • the Travel Hack 30l hybrid trolley backpack
  • the Travel Hack packing cube

I really like the look of the Travel Hack 30l hybrid trolley backpack . It’s looks similar to the travel hack backpack but has a capacity that’s 10l bigger and has wheels and a handle!

travel hack packing cube

The Travel Hack packing cube is designed to be paired with the 20l backpack. It comes in the same pale pink colour with rose gold zips. It says it compresses 17l of clothes down to 12l, saving 33% of space!

black cabin max travel hack backpack and the pink travel hack packing cube

I used The Travel Hack Compression Packing Cube along with the Cabin Max Metz 30L for a 2 week trip to Zanzibar. You can see how I used the two items together in my Youtube video: Pack With Me | How To Pack For A 2 Week Trip With 1 Under-seat Carry-on Bag . I was able to fit ALL my clothes for a 2 week trip inside the packing cube alone!

Although they are almost the same dimensions, I do find that the packing cube is a bit too big to use with the 20l Travel Hack backpack. It fills up every last bit of space which leaves no room to fill the internal mesh pockets or the floating pockets.

The Cabin Max Travel Hack range can be found on CabinMax.com !

The best underseat cabin bags for avoiding airline baggage fees

By Chelsea Dickenson and Lauren Burvill

The best underseat cabin bags 2023 Tried and Tested

Gone are the days where a carry on bag simply meant a small suitcase that you can wheel onto the plane and store in the overhead bin. Instead, especially when travelling short haul in Europe, you rarely get more than an underseat bag included in your fare for free, and even then you have to make sure it fits in the strict measurements for your specific airline. While it can be a headache to navigate these rules, the good news is that there are plenty of bags on the market that make life easier for you. Here are my top picks when it comes to the best underseat carry on bags for budget airlines like Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet.

How we choose the underseat cabin bags

Every bag on this list has been independently tested and reviewed by budget-travel expert Chelsea Dickenson of Cheap Holiday Expert , as well as our in-house editors. When testing these bags, we look for function, design features, quality and overall value for money.

  • Best all rounder: Cabin Max Travel Bag
  • Best for maximum packing space: Decathlon 20L Bag Essential
  • Best for quality: Antler Chelsea Overnight Bag
  • Best under seat suitcase: Flight Knight Lightweight 4 Wheel Suitcase
  • Best under seat backpack: Lossga Backpack with USB Charging Port

Cabin Max Travel Bag

When I asked others for underseat carry on bag recommendations, the Cabin Max range was the response I heard numerous times. This makes sense when you realise that the company truly understands the plight of bargain hunting travellers and so have created a line where each backpack meets the exact maximum measurements for the specific airline that you’re flying. In addition, their bags feature multiple pockets (including one for a laptop and bottle), adjustable ‘packaway’ straps and air mesh padding. There’s a 3 year warranty too.

The only downside is that if you opt for a larger bag – say the easyJet size – it probably won’t fit in the baggage sizer for either Ryanair or Wizz Air. However, you could always opt for a Ryanair sized bag to make sure you’re sorted for all options in the future. Chelsea Dickenson

  • Ryanair Size: 40 x 20 x 25cm – Fits on: Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet
  • Wizz Air Size: 40 x 30 x 20cm – Fits on: Wizz Air and easyJet
  • easyJet Size: 40 x 36 x 20cm – Fits on : easyJet

Decathlon 20L Bag Essential

You might have seen the ‘ viral Ryanair bag ’ doing the rounds on social media but I think this bag is better. For one, it’s cheaper at just £6.99, and the shoulder strap is going to make carrying this bag a lot easier than hauling around a bag by just its handles. Originally created as a gym bag to separate your workout gear from your shoes, the two compartments work just as well for travel. Plus, all Decathlon products come with a two-year warranty, so while it may not be the best quality bag, you’ll be covered for your next few trips at least. CD

  • Size when folded: 23 x 20 x 10 cm
  • Size unfolded: 40 x 23 x 20 cm
  • Fits on: Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyJet

Antler Chelsea Overnight Bag

It might be called an overnight bag, but if you pack strategically Antler's Chelsea bag can easily work as a weekender bag. I travelled with it on a recent trip to Barcelona and was able to comfortably fit a weekend's worth of clothes and toiletries. Although if you need to pack extra shoes, there's room for a pair of flip flops but little more. If you're a frequent flyer, this is a worthy investment – in addition to numerous internal and external pockets and compartments, including a laptop sleeve and a water bottle pouch, it also has an over-handle sleeve, making it an ideal option to take on a long-haul flight . The bag is made in a durable water-resistant nylon and comes in nine different colour options, which of course match their Chelsea suitcase range . See our full Antler Chelsea overnight bag review for more. Lauren Burvill

  • Size: 41.5 x 26 x 18cm

Lossga Backpack with USB Charging Port

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from reviewing small cabin bags is that they can get surprisingly heavy if you fill them to the brim! If you'd prefer to avoid heavy shoulder straps, an underseat backpack is the better option. I can’t get over just how many features this pack from Lossga has, including multiple pockets, a laptop sleeve, compression straps, a 180 degree ‘clamshell’ opening, and even a USB port for you to connect your own portable battery pack to.

For the price, it looks good – the outer material has a shine to it which keeps it from looking too cheap. The inside material is less lux, but it’s practical nonetheless. Overall, it’s a fantastic bag for the price and one of my top picks. CD

  • Size: 40 x 20 x 25 cm

Flight Knight Lightweight 4 Wheel Suitcase

If you hate the thought of hoisting a heavy bag along with you for your holiday; don’t worry. There are only a few hardshell suitcases that will fit the small underseat carry on bag allowance but they do exist. Like Cabin Max, Flight Knight are a company that have noticed a need for luggage that fits exact requirements and so you can opt for one of their suitcases which is the exact size for Ryanair, Wizz Air and easyjet.

The case has an anti-scratch water resistant outer shell and comes with a three-digit combination barrel padlock for added security. It also has a five-year warranty. If space is important to you, do note that the Ryanair sized suitcase is only 16L – meaning you miss out a huge 4L compared to many of the soft bags! However, what you lose in packing ability, you absolutely make up for in comfort and ease. CD

VMIKIV Underseat Carry On Bag

Most small carry on bags have quite a practical look to them, and yet this bag could easily pass as a casual day bag as well. I really liked that it was double lined, with several pockets on the inside and out, and I was surprised to find a padded laptop sleeve inside too – my 13” laptop fit in with plenty of room to spare. Other perks include the reinforced handles, a shoulder strap and a strap across the bag that allows you to slot your suitcase handle through it should you be travelling with that too.

The only drawback is that whilst it states it’s the same size as others, I couldn’t fit as much in as the other bags I tested. However, it’s a great option if you’re packing light and need a daily bag to carry your laptop around in too. CD

Lossga Convertible Cabin Bag

I think this bag is a great compromise between style and function. It looks good while having several pockets, a suitcase handle sleeve, reinforced handles, a shoulder strap and even one ‘wet pocket’ for storing damp items – perfect if you fancy one final dip in the pool before coming home.

However, the real standout feature of this bag is a little zip at the bottom that makes the bag even bigger. Try not to overfill the bag though, as it can get quite bulky in its bigger state which means you could struggle to fit it into the baggage sizer if asked. My top tip is to measure your bag once it’s full just to double check. CD

  • Extended Size: 45 x 36 x 20 cm
  • Fits on: easyJet - but don’t fill it to the brim!

Take Off Personal Item Suitcase

One of the major downsides of using a suitcase is that the wheels take up a lot of space, so what if there was a suitcase where you could detach the wheels?! This is exactly what Take Off have created, meaning that many travellers have already hoodwinked airline staff by quickly removing the wheels on their cases before being asked to prove its size. CD

  • Size: 45.7 x 35.6 x 20.3 cm (18 x 14 x 8 inches)
  • Fits on: The dimensions are a fraction of a cm over the allowance for easyJet (45 x 36 x 20 cm) however there is a photo on the Take Off website showing that it fits in the easyJet baggage sizer. I definitely wouldn’t overpack this case.

Cabin Max Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Bag: traveller review

Travel Hack Pro Cabin Bag Review: The Best Stylish Women’s Carry-On

Style , Travel Inspiration & Tips | March 27, 2019

This post contains affiliate links, which means I may make a small commission if you buy anything mentioned here. It doesn't cost you anything extra.

One of the most annoying things about being a woman who travels (besides having to constantly explain to people that actually, that country is  pretty safe), is all the ugly luggage we’re saddled with.

For years, I’ve been on a seemingly endless search for a stylish but practical carry-on bag for women; one that looks good but also manages to fit all the stuff I can’t go on a trip without.

People who fly frequently need a cabin case that’s spacious enough for all of our inflight essentials, compact and light enough to avoid extra charges, and pretty enough to make us feel like we’re not compromising our personal style while we travel. Because regardless of what most luggage brands apparently think, a penchant for adventure and a love of beautiful possessions are not mutually exclusive attributes.

Cabin Max® Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Bag

The Travel Hack Pro Cabin Case is manufactured by Cabin Max and designed by fellow travel blogger Monica, who runs The Travel Hack blog. Who better to design a piece of fashionable luggage than a lady who literally travels for a living?

Monica very kindly sent me a case to take for a whirl, and I’ve been using it on all of my short breaks since. I’ve been meaning to share a full review of the Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Bag for a while but wanted to make sure I’d fully tested it out before I wrote a review.

My Travel Hack Pro Cabin Bag Review (Why it’s the Best Carry-on I’ve ever Owned)

The Cabin Max Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Bag is finally back in stock – use my Amazon affiliate link !

Cabin Max® Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Bag

This fashionable carry-on looks a  lot  more expensive than it really is. At just £69.95 , I think it’s a very savvy investment for style-conscious travellers.

The Travel Hack Pro Cabin Bag has a 600D polyester black padded and quilted outer shell with faux leather inserts. The inner lining is bright pink and the zips are a beautiful rose gold colour.

It’s the most stylish ladies’ cabin bag I’ve ever seen and I’ve received compliments from other women every time I’ve used it. I was on the metro heading to the airport one morning in December and bumped into a friend, who loved it so much that she got her boyfriend to buy her it for Christmas!

Most fashionable ladies cabin case for plane travel

Size, weight and capacity of the Travel Hack Pro Cabin Case

The Travel Hack Pro Cabin Case is admittedly rather large-looking and when mine arrived, I was a bit worried that I’d be stopped at the airport because of the size. Rest assured though. Monica took all the big airlines’ luggage restrictions into account when she designed the bag and it’s allowed on most flights, including Thomson, Thomas Cook and even Ryanair’s with ‘priority’ boarding.

I’ve taken plenty of flights (and trains and car journeys) with this bag and had zero issues – but of course you should always check the specific airline’s baggage rules before you go to the airport.

The Cabin Max Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Case’s vital stats:

  • Dimensions – 55 x 40 x 20 cm
  • Weight – 2.7kg
  • Capacity – 28 litres

Despite its lightweight feel, it’s still surprisingly robust. And it’s incredibly spacious, so you really can pack loads!

Large ladies carry-on cabin bag for frequent travellers

Key features of this beautiful ladies cabin case

The Cabin Max Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Case makes gliding through the airport an absolute breeze. It has multiple zips, meaning easy access to your stuff, and multiple compartments.

It has a chic faux leather luggage tag, and there’s a water bottle holder on one side so you can easily take a refillable water bottle through security and fill it up in Departures.

The main compartment has built in packing straps and a variety of zipped internal pockets to compartmentalise everything. I’ve never seen the point of buying packing cubes but I do love being able to separate my toiletries, underwear etc using this bag’s sections and side pockets.

What makes this carry-on bag special?

There’s an integrated compartment that’s easily accessed by the top zip and it’s designed for handbags, helping you avoid any hidden costs for a second bag (looking at you, EasyJet)! I personally use this compartment for my camera equipment and my small, ‘going out-out’ evening bag. I like to put my liquids in here too, so I can smugly whip them out just as the bossy security people open their mouths to ask if I’m trying to smuggle a lip gloss onto the plane.

You can expand the main compartment up into the handbag compartment by moving the adjustable hatch that runs between the two sections.

The other thing I love about the carry-on is the separate laptop pocket. It’s padded and located on the side of the bag that would face your body, so your Macbook is protected but super easy to slide out at security. This pocket is also perfect for your travel documents.

Ladies cabin bag with compartments

Why this is the best ladies’ cabin case for frequent travellers

All Cabin Max luggage comes with a 3 year manufacturers warranty. I’m pretty ahem, rough, with my belongings (I can’t usually have nice things) but there are no signs of wear and tear on my bag at all, which is pretty remarkable for me after several uses.

The telescopic handle and easy-roll wheels have been reliable so far. If I was being super picky, I’d add two more wheels for even more flexibility but I suppose that’s only really an issue with full-size suitcases.

In summary, you  need  this carry-on, girls – especially because it’s such a reasonable price. Now obviously, this one was gifted to me but it’s been featured all over the press too, so even if you’re one of those people who doesn’t trust blogger reviews (why you here then hun?) you can rest assured that my review – and the bag itself – is legit. Since getting my hands on it, I’ve actually wondered what the hell all the other luggage companies have been playing at.

The Cabin Max Travel Hack Pro Rose Gold Cabin Case (name’s a bit of a mouthful, I will say that!) is so intuitively designed for female travellers that it’s kind of embarrassing that no other brands have though of it yet.

Is This The Best Underseat Cabin Bag? (2023)

Do you suffer from travel anxiety.

We can help you overcome anxiety and see the world.

This review of the best underseat cabin bag contains affiliate links.

Faced with the recent travel chaos witnessed in UK airports, I was keen to travel with hand luggage only on a recent trip to Gdańsk .

Unfortunately, however, budget airlines no longer offer the option of a free, small suitcase on their flights. Instead, passengers are now charged for anything bigger than underseat cabin luggage.

Consequently, this can quickly turn your budget trip into something far more expensive and, even worse, a disaster if your luggage is lost (something that seems to be happening with increasing frequency).

Determined to therefore not spend a penny more on the flights we booked to Gdańsk (via Wizzair), I decided to set myself the challenge of travelling with just an underseat cabin bag (or cabin approved backpack) for my 4 day trip to Poland.

My only problem? I didn’t have any luggage big enough and I had no idea where to look for the best underseat cabin bag. After two years of living alongside a pandemic and a newborn , I was completely out of the loop when it came to travel hacks and packing tips.

Fortunately, however, my brilliant friend, Monica – from The Travel Hack – had recently designed an underseat cabin bag with Cabin Max, perfect for my situation. Created with easy packing and travel in mind, I decided to order the Cabin Max Travel Hack Underseat Backpack for my trip.

My experience of travelling with just this cheap cabin suitcase was (genuinely) nothing short of revolutionary.

Bypassing long security queues and avoiding rows over overhead cabin space, travelling with just a cabin flight bag was fantastic and something I’ll try to do far more of in the future.

Given my positive experience of travelling with hand luggage only, I thought I’d put together a quick review of why I think the Travel Hack Underseat Backpack is the best underseat cabin bag out there.

Cabin Max Travel Hack Travel Bags for Women | Ryanair Cabin Bags 40x20x25 | Laptop Backpack - Black

The Dimensions For The Travel Hack Backpack

The dimensions for the Travel Hack Backpack are 40cm x 20cm x 25cm underseat backpack.

This makes it the ideal underseat bag for most popular airlines, including Easyjet, Ryanair and Wizzair. For those unsure of current underseat cabin bag dimensions, below is a quick summary.

  • Easyjet: 45 x 36 x 20 underseat cabin bag
  • Wizzair: 40 x 20 x 30 underseat cabin bag
  • Ryainair: 40 x 20 x 25 underseat cabin bag
  • British Airways: 55 x 40 x 23 – underseat cabin bag

Although the Travel Hack Backpack works within all of these dimensions, I was still concerned that once I’d stuffed my bag to the brim, it would be too big. Much to my relief, however, I still had over 2 inches to play with once I was fully packed.

Features of The Travel Hack Underseat Backpack

A top pocket for easy access to essentials.

One of my biggest bugbears about using cabin bags for air travel is the the faff involved when trying to access smaller items, such as my purse or headphones.

The Travel Hack Backpack has this problem solved, with an incredibly handy (and surprisingly deep) top pocket. This provides easy access to your travel essentials, including passport, keys and your wallet.

I found this pocket incredibly helpful and it meant that I wasn’t constantly opening and closing my backpack in the airport.

An External Padded Laptop Pocket

As someone who flies regularly with a laptop bag, I was worried about how I’d fit it into the bag, alongside all my clothes and toiletries.

Again, the Travel Hack Underseat Backpack saved the day with a handy external back pocket for your laptop. This made whipping the laptop out at security a breeze – and meant I could also access it easily on the plane without too much faff.

Fully unzips (like a suitcase).

One of the trickiest parts of travelling with a cabin bag rucksack is easily accessing your clothes and toiletries once you’ve reached your destination. Often falling into a backpack-created black hole, travelling with a backpack usually means crumpled clothes and a constant searching for items that have fallen down into the murky depths of your bag.

The Travel Hack Backpack , however, fully unzips like a suitcase.

Incredible.

Transforming into a teeny, tiny suitcase, the backpack makes access to your clothes easy. During my recent trip, I didn’t even bother unpacking – but instead kept my belongings in their handy compartments within the case. The adjustable straps also make it super comfortable to wear – even when full to the brim with your belongings.

Flying EasyJet?

Since writing this blog post in the summer of 2022, a new Travel Hack 30L Hybrid Trolley Backpack has been released.

This hybrid trolley backpack is 3OL in capacity, so considerably bigger than the backpack but is within EasyJet’s free under seat cabin bag allowance of 45x36x20cm.

Buy the Travel Hack 30L Hybrid Trolley Backpack

Cabin Max Travel Hack 30L Hybrid Trolley Cabin Bag Backpack with Wheels

20L Internal Capacity

For such a small and lightweight cabin approved backpack (just 0.6kg), the Travel Hack small cabin bag can take a surprising amount of luggage. With a whopping 20L capacity, I was surprised by just how deep the backpack is and just how much I could fit in to the main compartment.

In the main compartment, I was able to fit:

  • 1 x set of pjs
  • One pair of sandals
  • 2 x t-shirts
  • Electric Toothbrush

I’ve also just ordered the Travel Hack Compression Packing Cube to create even more space for my next trip. With the help of a compression cube and the bag’s compression straps, I’m confident that I could easily travel with this backpack for a week’s holiday – quite the claim.

Internal Zip Pockets for Extra Organisation

Another reason why I think the Travel Hack Backpack is the best airline under seat bag, is its two spacious zip mesh pockets on the inside of the backpack. Ideal for storing your toiletries, makeup and electronics in, it means that you can save the bag’s deeper space for just your clothes.

This also made the backpack less lumpy when fully packed and made accessing my liquids during security incredibly easy.

I also recently used the backpack for a family trip to Sicily, using it as my carry-on bag for my toddler. The pockets were ideal for storing wet wipes, nappies and snacks and made for the ideal baby travel bag.

In fact, I’m still using it as my everyday bag now I’m home.

The Verdict: My Review of the Travel Hack Underseat Backpack

So, the real question is: did I manage to travel with just underseat luggage for my four night trip?

Yes, yes I did – and with surprising ease.

Breezing past the long check in queues and relaxing into my seat as other passengers fought over cabin space, I was incredibly smug that all of my worldly possessions were under the seat in front of me.

A backpack designed for travel, with easily accessible compartments, the Travel Hack Backpack is (in my humble opinion) is one of the best cabin bags out there and definitely one of the best cheap cabin cases.

A Flight Attendant's 9 Hacks for Saving Space When Packing a Carry-on — From Just $11

For advice on the best ways to pack a carry-on, we look to flight attendants.

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

At Travel + Leisure , it’s our job to find the best of the best, from must-visit destinations to genius travel hacks for your next trip . And while we pull from our own wealth of experience as travel writers, we also value insight and recommendations from the most frequent of fliers, flight attendants. With how often flight attendants travel, I know I always personally look to them for advice on ways to travel smarter — especially how to make the most of your carry-on — and you should too.

And to help you do just that, I’ve picked the brain of Shanese Stuckey , a Miami-based flight attendant who has worked for United Airlines for the past eight years, to find out her carry-on must-haves from her rock-solid packing routine. Here’s a curated list of her top 9 tips and products that will help you pack more efficiently for your next trip.

Apple iPad 10th Generation

Stuckey packs her iPad for a genius reason: they’re  “able to connect to a keyboard so it’s all much lighter than packing a heavy laptop.” Attachable keyboards are incredibly sleek these days, and like she mentioned, really do save some space in your carry-on. Oh, and not to mention that especially with an iPad case , you don’t have to worry about safeguarding your precious laptop.

Hicober 3-in-1 Charging Station

Between your phone, headphones, and smartwatch, all those charging cords can certainly add up in your suitcase. Looking for a solution to streamline your charging needs altogether? Stuckey says, “Because you can’t always charge everything at once, or if you’re somewhere for a short period of time and need to get a charge fast on your devices, this 3-in-1 charging station is incredibly helpful.” It’s fast-charging, compact, and an all-purpose charging pad for just $32.

Bagail Packing Cubes Set

We’ve sung the praises of packing cubes time and time again, and Stuckey also considers them a traveling must-have because they “keep your things organized, but condensed too.” Some can help you fit up to 2 weeks’ worth of clothes in a single suitcase. But they also keep your clothes separated, too. As she explained, “Flight attendants wear tights and you don’t want them to get snagged, so I have a designated cube pack just for my tights.” So if you’re working with a set amount of space in your bag, you really need to grab a set of packing cubes.

EcoGear 28-Inch Duffel Garment Rack

Stuckey explained that although flight attendants have certain requirements for the type of suitcases they can use, when she’s off the clock, she highly recommends this duffel bag with a built-in garment rack and shoe compartment as “a genius way to store and pack your items.” I’ve never seen anything like this before, and I have a few weddings coming up and am considering buying it to hang my many outfits and store my shoes for the weekend.

Kuogo Portable Door Lock Pack

According to Stuckey, “traveling alone creates a whole different set of safety concerns,” and as a result, she recommends keeping one of these portable door locks in your bag for an extra line of defense in your rental or hotel room. It’s incredibly compact, so it’ll hardly take up any space in your carry-on. It comes in a set of two, so you can stay extra alert if your rental has multiple doors, or if you want to keep one at home.

Traveler’s Club Hardside Expandable 20-Inch Carry-On

Stuckey stressed that the key to packing the perfect carry-on all goes back to a great bag itself, and while her personal go-to is the $750 Tumi 19 Degree International Carry-on Suitcase , we found a more affordable yet equally spacious model for just $59. It’s just under 9 pounds and features smart packing compartments and compression straps to keep your belongings secure and condensed.

Morfane Travel Toiletries Set

A common mistake Stuckey thinks travelers make is that they overpack. As a flight attendant, she expressed that they can’t “have the suitcases be too heavy because they are constantly lifting it up and down,” so she encourages travelers “to pack your essentials and nothing you don’t necessarily need.” You don’t need to bring full-size, or even travel-size versions of all your skincare and haircare products for trips that are just a few days long; instead, condense it all down into a convenient travel toiletries set for easy breezy traveling.

Lura Mini Portable Travel Hair Dryer

Speaking of compact essentials, this hair dryer is almost half the weight and size of a regular one, which makes it the perfect size for your carry-on. Complete with a diffuser and additional blow dryer head for smoothing curly hair and blowouts, it’s the foldable hair accessory you didn’t know you needed. Oh, and as if it couldn’t get any better, it also comes with interchangeable plug-ins (U.S. and E.U.) so there’s no need to worry about buying an additional conversion plug.

Outdoor Ventures Packable Puffer Jacket

“I always roll my clothes into my suitcase instead of folding them to save space,” says Stuckey. And while this tip works exceptionally well for shirts and pants, it can be much harder to find a winter coat with the same foldable nature. That’s why she says a puffer coat that’s designed to be packable and rollable, “would be great to travel with and throw into your luggage.” We recommend this one that comes with a convenient bag to save even more space.

<p><strong>Brand:</strong> The maker is crucial in all luxury—and that especially includes wallets. Because what you’re buying isn’t just an item, but the cachet behind the name. Tips for Buying Underseat Luggage

Check the Bag Size - When shopping for under-seat luggage, measuring the bag's size first is crucial. Always take a moment to review the dimensions provided in the product description. Despite bags being advertised as airline-approved, our experience suggests it's best to double-check. Since airlines vary in their under-seat space allowances, confirming with them directly is a smart strategy.

Consider Wheeled vs. Tote Bags - Ponder over the choice between a wheeled bag and a tote. For regular travelers, a wheeled under-seat bag, whether it has two or four wheels, can greatly ease your journey through bustling airports. Tote bags, devoid of wheels, are lighter and thus more suited for short trips by car or train, where you're not as restricted by space constraints. Our tests revealed that both wheeled and tote bags, particularly those with rear straps for easy attachment to larger luggage, significantly streamline carrying your under seat item through airports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size luggage can fit under your seat?

So, every airline has its own idea of under-seat space, but guess what? The max is usually 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches. But, we found a sweet spot for size: 16 x 14 x 9 inches. That's our go-to for testing. Most under-the-seat bags hover around these dimensions, but how chunky your bag ends up really depends on how much you stuff it.

How much can an underseat suitcase fit?

In our evaluations, we checked how much each bag could carry by packing it with essentials: two days' worth of outfits, a laptop, and a toiletry kit. Typically, an underseat suitcase is ideal for packing lightly, covering just about a weekend's needs. However, the actual capacity might fluctuate based on what kind of clothing and gadgets you decide to pack.

What the Hack: The Best Travel Hacks From the Pros

Flight attendant Florian Schwebel is always prepared for anything on his travels. He shares his best travel hacks with us

In my job, I quickly learned one thing: most of the time, you never need all the clothes you've packed in your suitcase. That's why I choose what I take with me very carefully. Especially when I'm only in one place for 24 hours, as is often the case.

Portrait of Florian Schwebel

Travel Hack #1: Jogsuit

I always have a "jogsuit" with me in a basic color like grey or blue. These are suits made from jogging trouser fabric, which are available from various brands. They don't have a pleat, don't crease and look very casual in combination with sneakers. You can put them in the washing machine when you get there and you're instantly styled if you want to go out in the evening shortly after your arrival.

Travel Hack #2: Longsleeve made from merino wool

A merino wool longsleeve is also always on my packing list. The material has the advantage that it is sweat-resistant and regulates the temperature well. This is very practical if you don't know what weather to expect when you get there. Just like a super-light, compressible and waterproof jacket that can be folded up into a small package.

Travel Hack #3: Moisturizing spray

To make sure I look fresh and awake after a long flight from Germany to the USA, I like to spray moisturizing spray on my face. It works wonders.

Travel Hack #4: Duffel bag

On short trips, I usually only have a small duffel bag with me instead of a hard-shell suitcase. It's easier to squeeze into the overhead compartment on the plane. And in case I have time to go shopping on the road, I always have a foldable mini travel bag with me. You never know what you might discover.

Whether or not a lithium battery can be carried by air depends on its Watt-hour (Wh) rating (for lithium-ion, chargeable batteries) or its lithium content in grams (for lithium-metal, non-chargeable batteries).

When carrying consumer electronic devices (watches, calculating machines, cameras, mobile phones, laptop computers, camcorders, etc.) containing lithium or lithium ion cells or batteries, spare batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits (by placement in original retail packaging or by otherwise insulating terminals, e.g. by taping over exposed terminals or placing each battery in a separate plastic bag or protective pouch) and carried in cabin baggage only.

Don’t put spare batteries in your checked-in baggage!

In addition, each installed or spare battery must not exceed the following:

  • Lithium metal or lithium alloy batteries cannot contain more than 2 grams of lithium.
  • Lithium ion batteries cannot have a watt-hour rating of more than 100 Wh.

Lithium ion batteries exceeding a watt-hour rating of 100 Wh but not exceeding 160 Wh may be carried as spare batteries or in equipment in cabin baggage only, after the approval of Wizz Air.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

travel hack underseat cabin bag

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
