Wat is een goede uitvalsbasis voor de Panorama Route?

Zuid-Afrika kent vele mooie autoroute’s en de Panorama Route staat bekend als één van de allermooiste. Dat kunnen wij alleen maar beamen want op deze route vind je tientallen unieke natuurverschijnselen. De bekendste is de Blyde River Canyon. Deze 26 km lange canyon is zo’n 800 meter diep en is bovenal ontzettend mooi. Naast deze canyon zijn er ook nog heel veel watervallen en viewpoints te vinden. Je kunt de Panorama Route al in één dag verkennen en hieronder lees je over de 9 mooiste plekjes waar je zeker even wil stoppen.

Tip: Na Graskop zal je weinig tot geen restaurants tegenkomen op de Panorama Route. Neem daarom genoeg water en snacks mee voor onderweg.

De Panorama Route in Zuid-Afrika

Hieronder lees je over de verschillende stops op de route.

Lone Creek Falls is de eerste waterval op de Panorama Route en wat ons betreft ook meteen de mooiste waterval. Vanuit de parkeerplaats loop je door een jungle pad naar de 70 meter hoge waterval. De Lone Creek Falls is een van de weinige watervallen van de Panorama Route waar je dichtbij kan komen. Daarnaast hadden wij deze waterval helemaal voor onszelf wat het nog indrukwekkender maakte.

Mac Mac Falls is een 65 meter hoge waterval. Hij ligt op een half uurtje rijden vanaf de Lone Creek Falls en op zo’n 16 kilometer voor het dorpje Graskop. Een leuk feitje is dat de Mac Mac Falls relatief nog niet zo lang bestaat. Honderden jaren geleden was het een rivier, totdat in 1873 de Schotten er goud vonden. De gouddelvers hebben na deze vondst de rivier met dynamiet opgeblazen waarna het in tweeën splitste en deze waterval ontstond. Alhoewel het een prachtige waterval is, vonden wij het jammer dat je het maar vanuit één uitkijkpunt kan bekijken. Dit uitkijkpunt is ook nog een soort kooi wat de charme een beetje weghaalt. Wanneer je genoeg tijd hebt, kan je naar beneden hiken. Dit is alleen een vrij pittige hike dus doe goede schoenen aan en onderschat het niet. Het uitzicht van beneden blijkt daarentegen vele malen mooier dan van bovenaf.

Dit is zeker één van de mooiste plekken op de Panorama Route. Bij Bourke’s Luck Potholes komen de twee rivieren ‘Blyde’ en ‘Treur’ samen waardoor het water in snelle bewegingen ronddraait. Door de snelle ronddraaiende bewegingen van het water, ontstonden cilindervormige gaten. De door erosie gevormde waterpoelen zien er heel bijzonder uit. Je kan hier een mooie wandeling maken over verschillende bruggetjes en als je je zwemkleding meeneemt kan je in de gaten een bad nemen.

God’s Window is een erg bekend uitzichtpunt op de Panorama Route. Het uitzicht is mooi maar een nog betere tip is om vanaf God’s Window door te lopen naar ‘Rainforest’. Dit is een hele mooie wandeling door een klein regenwoud en wanneer je eenmaal boven bent, is het uitzicht nog mooier dan bij God’s Window.

Hopelijk kom je hier op een heldere dag want dit fantastische uitzicht kan nog weleens verpest worden door dichte mist. Bekijk dus vooraf even de weersvoorspelling en ga wat later op de dag wanneer de temperaturen stijgen en de mist vaak wegtrekt. Je hebt hier een heel breed uitzicht over de Blyde River Canyon. De Three Rondavels zijn drie gigantische heuvels van wel 700 meter hoog die zijn ontstaan door erosie. De perfecte plek om mooie foto’s te schieten.

Deze waterval is erg mooi wanneer het veel geregend heeft. Wij waren er helaas in de droge periode waardoor er maar een klein beetje water vanaf de hoge klif viel. Hierdoor vonden wij hem minder indrukwekkend dan de andere watervallen op de Panorama Route, maar hij hoort toch zeker thuis in dit rijtje.

Plan ook een korte stop voor de Pinnacle Rock in tijdens je roadtrip langs de Panorama Route. The Pinnacle is een 30 meter hoge, vrijstaande rots die in een kloof ligt.

Deze waterval is maar liefst 94 meter hoog en daarmee de hoogste waterval van de Panorama Route. Bekijk de waterval niet alleen bij het eerste uitzichtpunt maar loop een stukje door want vanaf daar wordt het uitzicht alleen nog maar beter. Wil je deze gigantische waterval van dichtbij bekijken? Dan kan je ook in 40 minuten een toffe hike naar beneden maken.

#9 Lowveld view (Blyde River Canyon)

Tussen Bourke’s Luck Potholes en Three Rondavels ligt nog een waanzinnig mooi viewpoint over de Blyde River Canyon. In tegenstelling tot de andere viewpoints is deze helemaal gratis. Zeker de moeite waard om even een kijkje te gaan nemen en te genieten van het uitzicht.

Er zijn een aantal dorpjes in de buurt van de Panorama Route. Wij hebben gekozen om te verblijven in Graskop. Graskop ligt het meest centraal op de Panorama Route en heeft veel goede hotels en restaurants. Een prima stadje dus om twee nachten te verblijven. Het is een aanrader om in Graskop te dineren bij The Glasshouse. Dit restaurant staat zo goed bekend dat je, zelfs in het laagseizoen, moet reserveren. Zonder reservering is de kans op een tafel erg klein. Een ander voordeel is dat, wanneer je van Johannesburg naar Graskop rijdt, je onderweg al twee watervallen kan afvinken. Zo kun je het de volgende dag iets rustiger aan doen. De watervallen waar je langskomt zijn de Mac Mac Falls en Lone Creek Falls.

Rustique is een super fijne plek om te verblijven in Graskop. Dit kleinschalige hotel heeft een hele gastvrije eigenaresse die veel aandacht heeft besteed aan de inrichting van de kamer. Voor de koude nachten is er een kachel en een elektrische deken. Ook  Zur Alten Mine een fantastische plek om te verblijven. Hier overnacht je in een chalet die van alle gemakken zijn voorzien zoals een kachel, een keuken, een heerlijk bed en een bbq. De chalets hebben veel privacy en je kan er ultiem genieten van alle rust in de natuur. Het ligt iets buiten het dorpje Graskop dus het is aan te raden om hier alleen te verblijven als je een huurauto hebt. Bij Westlodge B&B word je ontzettend gastvrij en vriendelijk onthaald. Deze B&B is van de buitenkant al een plaatje (volledig roze geschilderd!) maar ook binnen is het charmant ingericht. Ondanks dat het er een tikkeltje gedateerd uit ziet, zie je ook dat er veel aandacht is besteed aan de inrichting. Er is een grote tuin en in de ochtend krijg je een heerlijk uitgebreid ontbijt.

Zuid-Afrika

Eindelijk, na lang aftellen is het moment aan gebroken, de start van mijn volgende droomreis! Een reis die start in Kaapstad, Zuid-Afrika en mij in gezelschap van twee verschillende internationale groepen door acht Afrikaanse landen voert. We reizen de ruim 10.000 km met een omgebouwde truck.

Het eerste gedeelte van de etappe, van Kaapstad tot aan Victoria Falls (21 dagen) doen we onder begeleiding van chauffeur Mozes, kok Martin en gids Matt. We overnachten in tentjes op campings of in een safaripark. De tentjes moeten we zelf opzetten en afbreken. Ook hebben we lichte corvee-taken zoals het in- en uitladen van de truck, het helpen met het voorbereiden van het eten, het afwassen van het kookgerei en het schoonhouden van de truck (binnenzijde). De reis is geboekt bij de Nederlandse reisorganisatie Djoser, die de reis heeft ingekocht bij Africa Travel Compagny. Volgens de deelnemerslijst reizen er nog 7 Nederlandse/Belgische groepsgenoten mee, die ook de 42 daagje avontuurlijke reis hebben geboekt.

Bij aankomst verwacht ik de 7 Djoser groepsgenoten te ontmoeten, maar er staan er maar 3. Drie alleen reizende mannen (Frank, Frans en Jurgen). De rest van de groep schijnt al eerder aangekomen te zijn in Kaapstad. Met een mini Van, worden we naar het Ashanti hostel gebracht in Downtown Kaapstad. Op weg naar het centrum herken ik al vele plekken van Kaapstad. In 2013 ben ik hier al geweest, tijdens een rondreis door Zuid-Afrika. eindigde in Kaapstad. We rijden langs het voetbalstation, waar enkele wedstrijden van het WK 2010 werden gespeeld. De eerste nacht van de reis gaan we niet kamperen maar verblijven we in een hostel (Ashanti). Gedurende de reis zullen we nog enkele keren in een hotel kunnen slapen zoals in Namibië en op Zanzibar.

Tijdens het inchecken in het hotel maak ik kennis met Desiree, een Nederlandse jongedame. die ook dezelfde rondreis gaat maken. Mijn kamer is niet in het hostel, maar in een gebouw verderop in de straat. De truck staat al voor de deur. Hier zullen we vele uren in gaan vertoeven, genietend van het Afrikaanse landschap (hoop ik). Ik heb een grote mooie kamer en een ruime en nette badkamer. Het is te warm om de openhaard aan te steken. De ontvangst van de wifi is geweldig. Nog maar even genieten van al deze luxe, de komende weken zal het een stuk primitiever zijn. Om 01:00 uur is het tijd om te gaan slapen na een lange reisdag. Morgen weer vroeg dag. Dag 1 - Dagje  Kaapstad Het ontbijt buffet is inclusief. Hier maak ik kennis met Ruud en Linda uit Westervoort. Met Desiree spreek ik af om vandaag, samen Kaapstad te gaan ontdekken. Vlakbij het hostel nemen de rode lijn van de hop on/off bus.  Met deze bus die zowel Kaapstad als de buitengebieden aandoet, kan je net zo vaak in- en uitstappen als dat je zelf wil. Net buiten Kaapstad is de weg versperd als net voor ons een boom is omgewaaid. We zijn de eerste bus/auto die niet verder kan. De brandweer is snel ter plaatse om de boom in stukjes te zagen. Na een kwartiertje kunnen we de reis vervolgen. We zitten boven in de bus in het open gedeelte. In de wind is het best fris. Af en toe breekt de zon door. De rit is mooi, langs de rijke wijken waar mooie huizen staan, allemaal wel voorzien van hoge muren, hekken en prikkeldraad. Ik geloof niet dat ik hier zo zou willen wonen, alhoewel Kaapstad een geweldige stad is. Er is een stop in de Constanzia-Vallei waar vele druivenvelden zijn voor de beroemde Zuid-Afrikaanse wijnen. Hier moeten we overstappen in een andere bus, normaal hoef dit niet, maar omdat ze weg was geblokkeerd, zijn er diverse bussen achter elkaar komen te rijden. Er is ook een stop bij de Botanische tuinen. Wij rijden door naar Houtbaai. We wandelen langs het strand, een pier, zien grote zeeleeuwen die op de pier zitten (wel onder begeleiding van een Zuid-Afrikaan, die geld vraagt voor een foto).

Van de hoofdpier vertrekken de rondvaart boten naar de zeeleeuwenkolonie die leven op de eilandjes op de oceaan. Aangezien we beide deze tour al gedaan hebben wandelen wij langs de marktkramen met souvenirs. Ook nu treden er nog een aantal mannen op en staat een groep kinderen wat bij te verdienen door Afrikaanse dansen uit te voeren. Met de bus naar een volgende stop, de bus rijdt langs de grillige kust met grote granieten rotsen. Er zijn prachtige luxe huizen gebouwd met weids uitzicht op de oceaan en de mooie stranden. We stappen uit bij een van de witte zandstranden, raken in gesprek met een verkoper uit Malawi. Als ik hem vertel dat wij er heen gaan ontstaat er een leuk gesprek, hij vergeet zelfs zijn schilderijen aan de man te brengen.

Op een terras drinken we een cappuccino en genieten van het prachtige uitzicht. Met de bus reizen we verder naar Seaside-warf. Hier ben ik al eens geweest maar het is leuk om het nogmaals te bezoeken. Vele leuke restaurants, terrassen, bands die optreden etc. In een foodcourt bestel ik Patthai, een heel groot bord met de mie en garnalen. Desiree haalt bij een andere balie een wrap met springbok. Als we zitten te eten en Nederlands praten worden we aangesproken door de twee meiden naast ons. De meiden wonen in Zuid-Afrika. Er ontstaat weer een leuk gesprek, een van de dames haar opa komt uit Nederland. De dames spreken Zuid-Afrikaans wat goed te volgen is.

We lopen een rondje door de haven en het winkelcentrum en stappen weer op de bus voor de volgende stop, Bo-kaap. Hier zijn diverse huisjes in vele kleuren geschilderd. Op weg naar de huisjes zie ik een groep jonge Nederlandse meiden staan, die een Afrikaans schilderijtje willen kopen maar niet zoveel geld meer hebben en niet durven te onderhandelen. Ik spreek de verkoper aan als mijn “Big friend”, draai er wat omheen en vraag uiteindelijk wat hij wil hebben voor het gewenste schilderij. Hij vraagt 500 rand, na lang onderhandelen, waarbij ik geen prijs wil noemen, zeg ik dat het meisje out of money is, komen we uiteindelijk op een prijs van 200 rand. Vast nog te veel maar wel veel minder dan de 500. Later komen we de meisjes nogmaals tegen en blijkt ze nog steeds blij met haar aankoop.

Aan het eind van de dag lopen we, via een mooi park waar veel eekhoorns rondscharrelen, terug naar het hostel. Aan de rand van het park staan enkele mooie regeringsgebouwen. Een kwartier voordat de welkomssessie begint stappen we het hostel binnen. We maken tijdens de sessie kennis met met de tourleider en de rest van de internationale groep. De reis wordt uitgevoerd door Africa Travel Compagny (ATC). We blijken met een Amerikaanse tourleider (Matt) en twee man crew op pad te gaan (chauffeur en kok) en in totaal 22 of 23 personen. Een gemaileerd gezelschap, 8 Nederlanders, enkele Australiers, Engelsen, 2 Zwiterse meiden en een Duits meisje. Een gedeelte van de groep gaan “maar” 21 dagen mee, de meeste 42 dagen. Maar er blijken ook een aantal groepsleden nog door te reizen naar Oeganda en Rwanda om onder andere de chimpansees en de berggorilla’s te zien. Had ik dat geweten! Zo jammer dat Djoser deze optie niet heeft aangeboden.

Matt vertelt wat we allemaal gaan doen (hadden we zelf al gelezen in de reisbeschrijving) en geeft verder wat nuttige informatie over het reilen zeilen met betrekking tot de truck. Op concrete vragen weet hij niet altijd de antwoorden. Maar het belooft een avontuurlijke reis te worden. Don’t worrie, Relax, This is Africa.

De afspraak was dat iedereen op tijd bij de truck zou zijn. De meeste reisgenoten en alle spullen staan er om 8 uur, zodat we een half uurtje later zouden vertrekken. Een uur later zijn we niet weg. Mooi begin ….. De truck is ingeladen, we zitten er bijna allemaal in, maar we blijken nog te wachten ……….op de minivans voor onze tour naar een township. De truck pikt ons later, na de townshiptour op. Het is inmiddels gaan regenen. Als we eindelijk vertrekken, stoppen we al weer snel bij een tankstation om snacks in te slaan. De twee busjes rijden in de stromende regen naar één van de township van Kaapstad. We stoppen bij een momument ter nagedachtenis van 7 doorgeschoten demonstranten. De gids vertelt in de stromende regen het verhaal, die maar helaas weinig mensen kan boeien. Niet zo netjes, maar iedereen wil de busjes in, in plaats van buiten in de stromende regen te staan luisteren naar een gids die bijna niet te verslaan is. Jammer. We rijden wat rondjes door het township, stoppen bij het huis van de gids, staan te wachten….. wat een slecht begin van de reis.

Uiteindelijk stoppen in een locale bouwval waar om 10:30 uur al vele mannen de zelfgebrouwen bier zitten te drinken. Wij moeten ook het hok en in krijgen uitleg over het brouwen van de bier. Iedereen mag uit een grote emmer het bier proeven. Ik sla ff over. Vervolgens worden we naar onze lunchplek gereden, een grote tent, lange tafels, een diskjockey met luide muziek. De gegrilde gemarineerde kip en worstjes worden geserveerd met droog brood. De meesten van de groep zitten lekker te eten. De Townshiptour in Johannesburg, tijdens mijn vorige reis, was veel beter. Daar zagen we hoe de mensen wonen, liepen door de straten, maakte foto’s van de kinderen, bezochten een locale kroeg, kregen een optreden en aten daar een betere maaltijd dan hier. Ik mag de beide tourtjes eigenlijk niet vergelijken maar doe het toch. Ook de groepsleden vonden het een teleurstellende tour (mede door het weer).

• For wildlife safaris, the dry seasons (June to October for southern and eastern Africa, and December to April for northern Africa) are generally considered the best times for wildlife viewing.
• North Africa is best visited in the spring (March to May) or fall (September to November) to avoid extreme summer heat.
• The best time to trek Mount Kilimanjaro is during the dry seasons, from late June to October, and from late December to February.

Africa is for everyone. It’s for those looking for a relaxing getaway, it’s for those looking to discover new and exciting experiences; for those who want to learn more about the world and its fascinating people; and it’s also for those who seek out thrilling, adventurous activities. Whatever you’re looking for, you are sure to find it in Africa!

In this post, specifically, we’re going to be zooming in on the exhilarating activities and experiences to be found on the continent, which speak to the adventure junkies. And if you don’t necessarily consider yourself the adventurous, thrill-seeker type; best you realise there’s an adventurous side to us all! Some are more adventurous than others, but there’s an activity to suit your desires, trust us on this!

Top adrenaline activities & where you can do them 

1. skydiving | south africa , botswana , namibia and tanzania.

Skydiving is the ultimate thrill-seekers activity, and Africa is the perfect place to satisfy that thrilling urge! Just imagine plummeting to earth with Mount Kilimanjaro in your sights – or better yet, in the background of your video! Or what about the great salt pan of Makgadikgadi in Botswana? You see, Africa has so much to offer – even the skydivers are spoilt for choice!

The best places to go Skydiving on the African continent are:

• Tanzania, Kilimanjaro (ofcourse!)
• Botswana, Makgadikgadi salt pan
• Namibia, Swakopmund
• South Africa, Cape Town (Malmesbury)

2. Bungee Jumping | Zambia, South Africa and Uganda

Bungee Jumping may sounds utterly terrifying but everyone who’s done it says it’s the most exhilarating activity – and it can only get better if you’re bungee jumping amidst the beauty of Africa!

South Africa is known to have one of the world’s highest commercial bungee bridges in the world, known as Bloukrans. It comes in at a staggering height of 216 metres above the Bloukrans River. The Bloukrans Bungee Bridge is located between Plettenberg Bay and Knysna – two beautiful seaside towns that are well worth a visit.

Other incredible locations that offer bungee jumping:

• Zambia, Victoria Falls (tempting, isn’t it?)
• Uganda, Nile River

3. White-water rafting | Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya , Tanzania and Namibia

White water rafting is not for the faint of heart, although there isn’t anything to be afraid of. The rapids may sometimes appear overwhelming, but the thrill you get after successfully maneuvering your way through them, is priceless! The best places to go white water rafting in Africa are:

• Namibia, Orange River (best for beginners)
• Tanzania, River Rufiji
• Kenya, Tana river
• Zambia, Zambezi River
• Zimbabwe, Zambezi River

4. Abseil down Table Mountain | Cape Town

Cape Town is every adventure junkies dream destination. Not only does it offer a plethora of adventurous activities, such as: paragliding, bungee jumping, shark cage diving and abseiling (to name a few); but the views of the city will blow you away!

Table Mountain is Cape Town’s most iconic landmark. It towers over the city, and affords Cape Town the backdrop of dreams. If you’re not afraid of heights, go abseiling down Table Mountain! You won’t be disappointed by the sights, and what’s better than having everyone know you abseiled down (arguably) the world’s most majestic mountain?

Devil’s Pool Victoria Falls | Zimbabwe and Zambia

The Devil’s Pool is the most unique activity, for sure. The Devil’s Pool, which can be accessed from Zimbabwe or Zambia, is the first and only of its ‘kind’. You won’t find this on offer anywhere else in the world! So what is the Devil’s Pool? It’s a pool located on the top of the Victoria Falls. Climb Mount Kilimanjaro | Tanzania

Need we say more about this one. Every thrill seeker wants to tick this life-altering experience off their bucket list. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa, at a height of 4900 metres from its base; and is a dormant volcano. Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station  was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.

10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
