When it comes to travel, we know you need to find the perfect balance between comfort and style. After all, it’s great to look put together while hopping on a flight, but not at the cost of your comfort—especially on long-haul trips. Rest assured, we've curated a list of wardrobe essentials to achieve flawless travel and airport outfits, whether you are exploring a new destination for business or pleasure.

When it comes to the best travel outfits for women, accessories play a critical role in keeping you comfy and organized. All you have to do is remember a comfortable pair of shoes , compression socks to keep things moving, an eye mask that's an upgrade from the one the airline provides, and a chic shawl that doubles as a blanket. And of course, no travel outfit would be complete without a fashionable (and functional!) carry-on bag on your arm or atop your luggage . This bag should house all of your essentials and still level up your airport outfit. Keep reading for some of the best travel and airport outfit ideas your next trip.

J. Crew Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Cashmere-Wool Travel Wrap

Let's be honest, you can't always count on the airline's blankets to keep you warm, and some even leave annoying fluff behind. Stay warm and stylish with your own wearable blanket by way of this travel necessity from J. Crew that comes in eight different colors.

Athleta Everlasting Button-Down Top

Everlasting Button-Down Top

A classic button-down is a travel essential that elevates any in-transit look. Dr. Motion Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression Socks with Enhanced Cushioning (3 Pack)

Compression socks are always a good ideal for traveling. We recommend these styles from Dr. Motion that offer graduated compression of 8 to 15 mmHg while providing arch support. Unlike other socks that can feel scratchy or clammy, these are soft, moisture-wicking, and subtly cushioned.

32º DEGREES Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Lightweight Recycled Poly-Fill Shirt Jacket

Sometimes a full on coat is not needed for travel, but you can never be quite sure of the weather. That's why a a little packable shacket—part shirt, part jacket—comes in. In black, olive green, or dark blue, the jacket will be your go-to for travel. Keep in mind, it runs slightly big in order to allow for comfortable layering of hoodies or sweaters underneath. There's a reason why Oprah tapped it on her Favorite Things list .

JW PEI Aylin Canvas Cellphone Crossbody Bag

Asutra Silk Eye Mask & Pillow

Travel Outfits: How to Look Chic When You’re Flying

travel outfits

Listen—I’m all about rocking a cute travel outfit when I’m heading out of town…but I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing heels to the airport.

To be honest, I don’t even like wearing jeans on a plane (although I’ll occasionally make an exception if they’re REALLY comfortable jeans , or if my flight is under three hours.)

Usually you’ll find me rocking a head-to-toe set of my favorite affordable cashmere during the winter, and a lightweight loungewear set during the summer.

I often see pictures of bloggers at the airport posing next to their cute pink luggage wearing like…wedges and a mini-dress. HARD PASS. How is that even comfortable? When you’re en route to the airport (and your final destination) it’s all about feeling comfortable.

For this reason, I decided to put together a little guide to cute travel outfits…featuring things that you’ll actually want to travel in , whether you’re heading out for a winter getaway or a girls trip .

Because believe it or not, it’s possible to rock comfy loungewear, leggings, or a jumpsuit and still look SUPER chic, as long as you style them properly (especially my favorite faux leather leggings .)

Below are a handful of great travel outfits I found while trolling IG—and the exact things you can buy to replicate them.

(Also: if you’re also on the hunt for stylish carry-on luggage or if you need some good go-to travel toiletries…I got you covered.)

Chic Travel Outfits

Travel Outfits

Here, I’m sharing a handful of my go-to travel outfit pieces. These are all items that I think you should have in your closet regardless of how often you go on a getaway, but they just so happen to be particularly comfy choices when going on a plane.

These picks will of course depend on how long your flight is and where you’re headed, but overall, I think they’re practical for travel days.

The only caveat here is that I know a jumpsuit isn’t exactly ideal if you’re going on a long-haul flight—however—I personally don’t mind wearing them on planes because they’re so comfy and not really that difficult to slip in and out of when you need a bathroom break.

If jumpsuits aren’t your jam, there are plenty of other ideas in this post that should work for you, like a cute matching sweatsuit or leggings and a leather jacket. Without further ado, here are the staples I’d recommend having on hand for travel days.

PRAYRNA SINHA

This post gave me a more clear idea of what I will wear when travelling and I especially loved the part where you mentioned the all black and all white monochromatic looks .

' src=

I do not think I would wear white on a plane. No to the belly sticking out as well. I do like the stretchy pants and sneakers.

' src=

Why would anyone wear a jumpsuit on a plane? The toilets are used by hundreds of people, now you want to pull down the top part of your clothes and have it dangling somewhere near the toilet, while you’re sitting on a toilet that exposes the part that gets wee on when the seat is up? Eeu that’s all kind of germ wrong!! But I do love the little 3/4 joggers! Def looking for some of those for my next long haul (when this pandemic is over!)

Amazon Essentials Women's Lightweight Packable Jacket

Best Packable Jacket

Amazon essentials women's lightweight packable jacket.

These travel outfit ideas include plenty of wardrobe essentials you'll use while at home or away anyway. Think: the best joggers , high-waisted leggings , loungewear sets , and a go-to tee you'll want to wear every single day. There are great straight-to-the-office outfits, too, if you're headed right to a meeting from the airport. Of course, we also included travel must-haves like compression socks and a silk sleep mask for long plane rides.

Everything here can easily be rolled up and tucked into a bag, too. Maybe you don't need that wrap in the warm weather outside, but you'll step inside to the freezing cold air conditioning and thank yourself for being prepared. No matter where you go, remember that life is all about the journey, not the destination. You might as well look and feel good all the while. So grab these smart travel outfit ideas and bon voyage! ✈️

These rank at the top of best jogger lists because they truly are that comfortable. The fabric is super soft and the semi-relaxed fit lets you move around with ease. With over a dozen colors to choose from, you can go basic with black or gray or pick your favorite color. Either way, you'll never want to take them off.

This tee is a one-size-fits-most powerhouse. It's oversized without looking sloppy and has comfy 3/4-length sleeves and high side slits for a fashionable touch. The 100% cotton slub fabric is airy and light, making it perfect for wearing loose, tucked in at the front, or knotted at the hip. You'll want one in every color!

If you tend to get a little chilly when the air conditioning hits, you need something to lay over your shoulders and arms. Enter: this stunning cashmere and silk blend scarf! You can wear it as is, draped over your outfit, or as a scarf under a jacket.

If you need an extra layer but prefer sleeves, go with an open cardigan style. This wrap is made of breathable, stretchy fabric and it has pockets! It also comes in over a dozen colors and is available in sizes XXS to 3X in regular, petite, and tall lengths.

You can absolutely splurge on an expensive pair of leggings if you live for that kind of comfort. But when Amazon has a buttery soft pair for under $25, that means you can buy an extra one for when you get to where you're going, too. With over 20 color options, you'll have plenty of outfits to coordinate.

The great thing about a dress is you can go straight to the beach or brunch as soon as you arrive to your destination. This one is made of a soft jersey knit blend with a tie waist that you can make as tight or as loose as you want. The fabric also has UPF protection so you really can wear it straight to the sand!

A casual look just isn't quite complete without a go-to hoodie. Reformation offers an oversized yet stylish option, available in a neutral almond shade and basic black. It pairs perfectly with their boyfriend sweatpant for a matching set, but will also go with everything you have in your closet.

If you want to buy a matching set to coordinate, this option makes the list of best loungewear because of the 17,000-plus reviews, 25-plus color options, and soft, stretchy fabric. Tuck in the front of the top and scrunch up the cuffs on the bottom a little bit for a super trendy look.

Oh, you want more matching stuff, you say? How about this four-piece set? It comes with super soft cotton/modal blend reversible tank, turtleneck tunic, pants, and a duster. You'll also get a travel pouch to hold them all...so it's actually a five-piece set!

Sometimes the problem with traveling from one place to another is the drastic change in the weather. Go prepared with a packable jacket. This bestseller is water-resistant, has a hood, and wraps into a tiny little pouch for easy storage. It's also available in ten other colors!

Dr. Scholl's Knee-High Compression Socks

Dr. Scholl's Knee-High Compression Socks

If you're getting on a plane, compression socks will work wonders for your circulation, especially on long trips. The mild compression keeps them comfortable on your calves, so you don't feel like you're wearing a medical device. They also keep your feet comfy if you've got to trek through the airport.

The Perfect Pant

The Perfect Pant

Does the perfect pant exist? Spanx sure thinks so! This high-waisted flare has four-way stretch, hidden shaping technology, and doesn't have a pesky zipper or button. Just pull them on and you're ready to go from travel to meeting in no time. Oh, and they are machine washable, too.

Untuckit Button-Down Shirt

Untuckit Button-Down Shirt

If you need a dress shirt to go with your pants, look no further than this wrinkle-free, stretch cotton button-down. It also features button placement that avoids those dreaded open gaps you might get on other shirts.

Kizik Lima Sneaker

Kizik Lima Sneaker

With extra cushy foam outsoles and a breathable knit construction, you'll be able to wear these everywhere from errands to travel to checking out the sights on vacation. The best part? Though they have laces, they are actually slip-on shoes!

Silk Sleep Mask

Silk Sleep Mask

Catching some z's is tough when you're en route. Block out the light in comfort with a silk sleep mask. Not only will it give your eyes a rest, but silk does wonders for your skin. So, you don't have to worry about weird creases on your face when you wake up.

10 Chic & Stylish Travel Outfit Combinations That You Can Easily Recreate *Including Packing Tips*

Stylish travel outfits.

Do you have any travel planned over the next few months? Chances are, you probably have some sort of trip planned! If so, this post is for you! We travel quite a bit so it’s safe to say I’m a pro in this area. I’m frequently asked what to wear on travel days specifically so below, I’m sharing simple, stylish travel outfit combinations that you can easily recreate when you take your next trip! Plus, some important packing tips I’ve learned along the way…

By the way, if you’d like to see more outfit ideas and hear even more amazing packing tips, check out the corresponding video here .

Stylish Travel Outfits for women

#1) Sweatsuit

Today’s sweatsuits are a far cry from the Juicy sweatsuits we saw in the early aughts! The sweatsuit options now can look very chic, sophisticated, and like “regular” clothing. They’re also extremely comfortable, which is especially important if you’re on an overnight international flight and need to get some sleep or just want to be comfy on your next road trip.

The sweatsuit I’m wearing above is from the Spanx AirEssentials collection and I love it so much I have it in green, black, and a pretty beige color. What I love about these pieces is that they’re very chic, super lightweight, breathable, and SO comfortable. They also come in petite, regular, and tall length options and in cropped or full-length (I’m wearing a petite small). The pullover and pants are also wrinkle-resistant…a must for travel! If you don’t already have a comfortable sweatsuit that you love, I can’t recommend this set enough!

Note : You don’t have to wear a matchy-matchy set like this. If you have a pair of black joggers you love and a comfy sweater you love…pair those together for a similar look!

I talk more about this set and the AirEssentials collection in this post . AND…use code ERINXSPANX to get 10% off these pieces!

Activewear Stylish Travel Outfits

#2) Activewear

Next up is activewear! You’ve probably seen on your Instagram, the typical influencer travel uniform of leggings, blazer, sneakers, tee, and baseball hat. That’s a super cute look but it’s not personally my style. How I would do activewear when I travel is to wear wide-leg pants like these by Beyond Yoga. They look elevated, sophisticated, and not like traditional activewear. I paired it with the matching camisole and a cute wrap front cropped sweater so you still get that matchy activewear feel… just a bit more elevated.

Cargo Pants & Top

#3) Cargo Pants & Top

Cargo pants are comfortable and casual and are a step up from leggings or sweatpants. These pants are from Banana Republic and I love the fit, length, and utility-inspired details. If cargo pants aren’t your style, consider some more casual jogger-style pants instead. Either way…cargo pants, joggers, or trousers are a great alternative to jeans while you’re sitting on the plane.

For travel shoes, I typically like to wear closed-toe shoes like sneakers or booties but it’s totally up to you! If you prefer toe wiggle room, run hot, or are going somewhere tropical, you might want to wear sandals instead. I like to look at the shoes I’m packing and wear the bulkiest pair on travel day, so I have more room in my suitcase! And I never…NEVER…wear heels for travel days. Anyone else ever have to run through the airport to catch a flight??

Jeans & Top

#4) Jeans & Top

The next travel uniform that’s so simple, accessible, and easy to recreate from pieces in your own closet is jeans and a top! Jeans and a top with either sneakers or boots are my go-tos almost every time I travel. In the look above, I’m wearing a pair of Mother jeans that has the perfect inseam for me, a high rise so I feel secure but not uncomfortable, and a wide-leg silhouette. On top, I’m wearing a billowy top that doesn’t cling to the body and is comfortable and forgiving. If you’re going to go this route, try to pair your jeans with a top that’s a basic-with-a-twist to add some interest to the look. For example, this top has pretty crochet detailing at the neckline and fun bell sleeves. I’m wearing a pair of Rag & Bone sneakers in this look, but you can wear whatever sneakers you love or some booties to dress it up… just make sure they’re breathable, comfortable, and it’s not your first time wearing them. Travel is never the time to break in a new pair of shoes!

By the way, I’m sharing even more helpful tips in this corresponding video in case you’re interested!

Cropped Blazer & Jeans

#5) Cropped Blazer & Jeans

Next up is the cropped blazer and jeans combo. I run cold and for some reason, I’m really cold on planes and in airports. So, I love to have layers I can throw on or shed depending on how I’m feeling. Packing light layers is so important anyways, to ensure a properly functioning travel wardrobe.

I didn’t have a great picture of this outfit but still wanted to share it. Plus, you can see it in motion in the corresponding video . I’m wearing a tan cropped blazer from Mango that’s older but still a go-to for me, so I linked a similar option. Underneath the blazer, I’m wearing a white ruched tee (another basic-with-a-twist we’ve talked about!). I also threw on a scarf because it looks so chic, and it’ll keep me warm…fashion and function! Pair your blazer and tee with your favorite comfortable jeans and sneakers or booties and you’re ready to go in a chic, pulled-together travel outfit! I’m wearing my go-to Chloe sneakers I’ve worn on SO many trips since they’re just so comfortable, stylish, and versatile. They also have a little platform for some added height, which is a win in my book!

By the way, we shared an EPIC travel capsule wardrobe in this post that’s a must-read after you’re done with this post!

Long Blazer & Jeans

#6) Long Blazer & Jeans

Similar to the last look, wear a long blazer versus the cropped one. A longer blazer is a little harder to wear for petite women, but all you have to do is leave it unbuttoned and half-tuck your top into the front of your jeans to help elongate your look and balance the proportions.

In this look, I’m wearing a pair of Moussy Vintage jeans, which is one of my favorite denim brands because the washes are beautiful, the fit is perfect, and most of the styles are a little shorter…perfect for petite women (I’m 5’4” for reference). I paired the jeans with a basic white tee and this pretty off-white oversized blazer. I love the oversized fit for easy layering over anything you’re wearing or have packed. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of Golden Goose sneakers that are the perfect combination of comfy and stylish. For my full review of Golden Goose sneakers, make sure you check out this post next.

Tip: Don’t ever wear a travel outfit that doesn’t function with the rest of your travel wardrobe. Whatever pieces you wear on the plane or in the car should be pieces you can wear again later in the trip with what’s already packed in your suitcase.

Light Jacket & Jeans

#7) Light Jacket & Jeans

This is another go-to travel uniform for me and it’s a great way to show that you can alter your travel uniform to whatever works for you and feels like your style. Your lightweight jacket could be a cargo jacket, bomber, leather jacket, denim jacket, etc. In this look, I’m wearing a Veronica Beard utility jacket that I bought for our trip to Africa and have been wearing nonstop! It’s such a gorgeous statement piece but again, you can wear whatever jacket works for you. I paired it with the same formula we’ve followed for the past few looks…chic jeans, a tee, and comfortable sneakers. In the photo, I’m wearing sandals but for travel, I’d swap it for sneakers or booties.

Trench & Jeans or Pants | Stylish Travel Outfits

#8) Trench & Jeans or Pants

You have to be careful when it comes to wearing longer coats or jackets during travel because you don’t want to risk having anything drag on the floor while you’re walking through the airport or in the ladies’ room! But a mid-length coat is usually perfect. I personally love how pulled together and sophisticated a trench looks and how it can completely elevate any outfit. Plus, it’s usually a great piece to have with you while you travel. But you could also go with a cardigan or wool coat depending on your style, the weather where you’re traveling, and how you’re planning to wear it during the rest of your trip and with pieces you have packed.

Tip: When you’re packing, make sure to stick to a color story so that everything mixes and matches effortlessly. I like to stick to neutrals like beige, white, tan, black, etc., and only include 1-2 “special” pieces that are outside of my color story.

All Black Stylish Travel Outfits

#9) All Black

An all-black travel outfit will work for pretty much any destination and especially if your travel wardrobe color story includes black. In the look above, I’m wearing a chic black sleeveless sweater and some paper-thin black leather pants that I wore on a recent trip to California. These pants are super lightweight and breathable but you could easily swap these out for a pair of black jeans, joggers, leggings, trousers, cargo pants, or whatever you feel best in. On my feet, I’m wearing a pair of See by Chloe combat boots I’ve had for years and really love! They’ve been “on-trend” for years so I don’t see them going anywhere anytime soon. Plus, they’re SO versatile, comfortable, and lightweight.

Cool Pants & Blazer travel outfit idea

#10) Cool Pants & Blazer

This is a bit of a wildcard but it’s such a fun look that I just had to share! I’m wearing a pair of Me+Em houndstooth wide-leg pants. They have a comfy elastic waistband, are super comfortable, and the length is great on me. I paired them with a basic black tee, an oversized black blazer by IRO, and combat boots. Throughout this post, you probably noticed the pattern…jeans + top + outerwear. This outfit breaks the mold a little bit and just adds some interest and fun to the mix!

One item I added to my travel wardrobe this past year is a cashmere wrap from Quince. I absolutely love it! It can be styled many ways, it’s soft and warm, and I love having it to cozy up with in hotel rooms.

Perfect item to add to your travel wardrobe!! Thanks for sharing, Jane! ~Erin xo

Creating Chic Travel Outfits

Who doesn’t love going on vacation and traveling to a new destination? I know I definitely do!

But while I love exploring new places, I also know that travel days can be pretty hectic! It’s important to be prepared with comfortable outfits you can easily spend the day in while navigating airports or sitting in rental cars.

If you’re in need of fashionable and functional travel outfits, you’ll love my looks below. I have airport outfits for every style and season, so whether you’re traveling to a tropical paradise or a winter wonderland, you’ll be set!

denim jacket + a puffer vest

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white tee, a blue denim jacket, and a black puffer vest with adidas samba sneakers and a black crossbody bag

get the look:

Layers are a must if you’re traveling in the fall or winter! I love starting my travel ensemble with basics like my Lululemon Align leggings and oversized Jil Sander tee (more affordable option here ) , then layering as needed.

Above, I added my Madewell denim jacket and Quince puffer vest to keep me warm and cozy both on and off the plane!

leggings+ a bomber jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a white graphic tee, a grey jacket, and black sneakers

An oversized tee and black leggings are the start of my airport outfit here as well, but this time, I’m staying warm with a sleek and modern bomber jacket .

I recommend choosing an outfit like this when it’s a little warmer out. The jacket is perfect for staying warm in a cold airport but can easily be removed as needed. And, these New Balance 574 sneakers are so comfortable!

linen pants + a denim jacket

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants, a white tee, a denim jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a tan leather crossbody

Drawstring linen pants are an absolute essential in my spring and summer wardrobe! They are so comfortable and easy to wear during a travel day, and the denim jacket is stylish and adds a layer of warmth – airplane AC is always so intense!

I love this Quince phone crossbody  for convenience (it fits a passport too) . And I always recommend wearing sneakers or other comfy footwear when traveling – bonus points if your shoes can be easily slipped off and on when going through security!

wool coat + Ugg slippers

A woman at the airport wearing black leggings, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a brown wool coat, and Ugg slippers

Looking for the ultimate cozy travel outfit?

Leggings and Ugg Tasman slippers are definitely my go-to for comfort in the cooler months (the Uggs have been selling out constantly, so here’s a perfect high-quality Tasman dupe ) . And a long wool camel coat is not only chic but also perfect for layering – it doubles as a blanket on the plane!

I also love this long knitted coatigan from Mango as a great travel piece.

travel in neutrals

A woman at the airport wearing black linen pants and a white tee with a black sweater draped over her shoulders, grey and white sneakers, and a black crossbody bag

I love simple, neutral outfits because they always look effortless and stylish. A plain white tee and black linen drawstring pants are ultra-comfy but still have a chic, put-together aesthetic.

This outfit is great for summer traveling, but I always bring a sweater with me so I don’t get too cold on the plane.

bomber jacket + joggers

A woman at the airport wearing black joggers, a grey crewneck sweatshirt, a great jacket, white and grey sneakers, with a baseball cap and a black crossbody bag

This is another cold-weather travel outfit that I love! Lululemon fleece joggers and a crewneck sweatshirt are great base layers and the bomber jacket adds an extra cozy feel.

And if you ask me, this ensemble has a laid-back, sporty feel, making adidas Samba sneakers and a baseball cap the perfect finishing touch!

More Comfy Airport Outfits

I’ve stalked my favorite fashion influencer and have found even more comfy travel airports that are modern and chic. I think you’ll love them too!

trench coat + trousers

A woman ready to go to the airport wearing black pants, a classic trench coat, and converse sneakers

You don’t have to be traveling to France to dress like a Parisian while on vacation!

A trench coat is a classic piece in French fashion, and with good reason. It’s lightweight, versatile, and oh-so chic – what more could you want for an airport outfit?

I recommend using a trench coat to layer over other pieces when traveling in cold weather or to stay dry while out and about on rainy days. A trench coat can also be used for a modern and refined look, making it perfect for any occasion!

matching sweat set

A woman ready for the airport wearing a grey matching sweat suit set, a trench coat, and trainers

I think a matching sweatsuit set makes a perfect travel outfit because it’s comfortable and versatile. You can wear a sweatsuit set to stay warm while traveling in the fall or winter, and you can wear it as is or add layers if needed.

And I love that you can double up on a matching set by using it to build other outfits during your trip.

try (comfortable) denim

A woman at the airport with ripped blue jeans, white sneakers, and a white sweater

Jeans are a must to bring along when traveling, and you can’t go wrong wearing it as part of your airport outfit, so long as your jeans are comfortable and not too snug !

One thing I love about jeans is how easy they are to care for. Jeans can be worn days in a row before needing to be washed (especially in cold weather) , so being a low-maintenance and versatile piece makes them great for traveling in my opinion.

cozy shearling coat

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a white coat with black Chanel boots and a pink beanie

A warm coat will keep you ultra-comfy as you fly. And if you ask me, a shearling coat or shacket is a travel piece you can’t go wrong with! This piece will keep you warm even on the coldest days, and it’s also fashionable and versatile enough to wear with so many outfits.

Such a chic and neutral-toned coat is a must if you’re traveling to or from somewhere chilly. And this coat will look great while keeping you cozy everywhere from the airplane to local cafes to must-see landmarks!

leggings + a denim jacket

A woman with luggage wearing black leggings and a grey hoodie with an oversized denim jacket and white sneakers

If you want to know one of the best things to wear while traveling, look no further than a classic pair of leggings.

Comfortable and stretchy leggings are a perfect piece to wear, whether you’ll be walking through an airport or sitting on a plane. I suggest searching for a pair made of breathable material and one with pockets for easy access to your phone and other essentials.

a long, cozy coat

A woman at the airport with olive green leggings, sweater, and baseball cap with a long white coat and white trainers

If you plan on traveling in the fall or winter ( or maybe your destination will have chilly weather ), bringing a coat is a no-brainer. And I think a long coat like this is an easy way to add a stylish and modern aesthetic to your outfits.

A piece like this will keep you nice and cozy during a busy day of traveling, and you’re sure to use it when trying local cuisine or attending a wine tasting. I love that it adds an elegant touch to a simple outfit like this, so you know you can pair this with any look, both casual and refined.

What should I wear to an airport in the summertime?

If you’ll be spending time at the airport in the summer, you will want an outfit that is both comfortable and cool. Choose lightweight and breathable pieces such as:

  • Short-sleeved tee or tank top
  • Lightweight leggings
  • Flowy dress
  • Midi or  maxi skirt
  • Cotton button-up shirt
  • Linen blazer
  • Sandals  or sneakers

Comfy Airport Outfits for Summer

There are tons of cute airport outfits that are perfect for hot summer days. I’ve got my favorite comfy airport outfits for summer below, so you don’t have to sweat it when packing or traveling!

a maxi dress

A woman at the airport with a flowing black floral maxi dress and chunky white sneakers

What would the summer be without gorgeous flowy dresses to spend your days in? This breezy piece will keep you comfy and cool throughout your day, and it will definitely be comfortable to wear while sitting on a plane.

And in my opinion, a dress is a great piece to bring along on your vacation. You can style it casually as you travel or when checking out local spots at your destination, and it can easily be transformed into a chic date night look with a high-end handbag and some gold-toned jewelry.

linen trousers + a tank

A woman holding luggage wearing pleated white pants, a striped tank top, and a sweater tied over her shoulders

Next on the list of comfy airport outfits for summer are flowy, linen pants. These are another fantastic travel piece you can wear for any occasion, from laid-back to classy and refined. So whether you plan on exploring tourist hot spots or dining on gourmet cuisine, these pants will fit into your vacation looks effortlessly.

I also think that crisp light-colored pants are perfect for a summer outfit, and the relaxed fit also makes them comfy enough for long travel days. They’ll fit easily into your luggage, and these lightweight trousers will definitely be a staple in your vacation wardrobe.

oversized blazer + bike shorts

A woman with luggage wearing black running shorts, a white crop top, a camel blazer, and white trainers

I know I’m not the only one who loves layering an oversized blazer over any outfit!

Adding a blazer to an outfit is a great way to elevate your look when it comes to comfy airport outfits for summer. A blazer instantly adds a stylish and modern vibe to any ensemble, so it’s a perfect styling piece to bring while traveling.

oversized button-up

A woman holding luggage wearing black leggings and a black crop top with a white button-up and black sandals

Cotton button-up shirts are a great way to feel comfortable and look chic in the summer. I suggest wearing this versatile piece over a crop top and black leggings, like in the outfit above, or keep it buttoned and tied in the front for a cute and casual aesthetic.

A button-up shirt is also another perfectly versatile piece for an airport outfit. I love that you can wear it out for a fancy dinner, pair it with jeans for a casual look, or layer it over a bikini during a tropical vacation.

matching skirt + tank

A woman with a dark tan maxi skirt, matching top, a white blazer, and white sandals at the airport

Go for maximum comfort and style in a stretchy, ribbed midi skirt and a matching top! A skirt and top set like this are lightweight and breezy but still offer plenty of coverage while traveling.

You’ll also have a perfect piece to wear for anything from sightseeing to a night out. And, my favorite thing about a matching set is that it can be kept together or mixed and matched with other pieces in your travel wardrobe. So you’ll have plenty of outfit options to choose from while on vacation.

bike shorts + hoodie

A woman with pink running shorts, hoodie, and baseball cap with white sneakers and a luggage set

In my opinion, running shorts and a hoodie are great for casual and comfy airport outfits. The biking shorts are very travel-friendly since they’re easy to spend a whole day in and won’t take up much space in your bag. Plus, you can wear them as part of other laid-back outfits or if you plan to stay on top of your workout routine on your trip.

30+ Cute And Comfy Travel Outfits

Outfits , Style

Traveling is composed of different mini-adventures: going to the airport, waiting for the next layover, going to brunches, dinners, field trips, night markets, museums, and more. No matter where you are going on a vacation, you want to make sure that you’re dressed comfortably and are ready to travel.

Two crucial factors that you must remember when you pick outfits for travel are context and appropriation. Some places (e.g synagogues, temples, museums, etc) may require you to dress modestly, so doing a brief research on the place you’re visiting is important.

Comfort is also something you should consider when picking an outfit. When you travel, it’s best to keep it on the comfy and safe side. Wear clothes that you have already worn before or try doing a “dress rehearsal” for your new clothes before your trip so you don’t end up with a piece of clothing that’s uncomfortable once you’re already stuck on a plane. You would want to wear something that you know works.

And, of course, you can’t forget about style. Adding a bit of style and thought into your outfit will not hurt unless you take away the comfort from the equation. Always pick your pieces with both comfort and style present.

I’ll share some of my favorite outfit pieces and outfit combos next. Otherwise, scroll ahead to check out 30+ travel outfits for inspo!

Invest in Basics:

Investing in basics can give you the opportunity to pack light on your trip. Bring a couple of “repeatable” pieces that are not easily spotted. It doesn’t mean that you will be wearing one boring outfit the whole way, it just means packing something versatile and something you can mix and match.

This is particularly important if you’ll be traveling a lot. For example, you might be flying a few different times during your trip and taking a train. You don’t need tons of different outfits just to get from one point to another!

Of course, bring in some trendy pieces to combine with your tidy whities and your sleek blacks.

1. Leggings

Leggings are kind of a travel staple. I literally never get on a plane without them. If you’re on a trip, especially a tour or an airport layover, you would want to keep it flexible but stylish. Instead of a dress, wear a cute but casual top (like a crew neck sweatshirt or sweater) over leggings.

2. White/Black Sneakers

Classic white/black sneakers are a travel must-have. You just can’t go without them, especially on a plane or in a car. A pair of classic white/black sneakers are the epitome of comfort and style. Plus, these sneakers can definitely be used during the rest of your trip.

And besides, tired feet are the ultimate spoilsport. Wearing pretty but uncomfortable shoes may cause blisters, keeping your head out of the fun. A snug pair can keep your feet in the best condition.

3. Classic White Tee

An all-around white tee is another wardrobe (or suitcase in this circumstance) must-have. It is as versatile as it can get! Once you’re at your destination, you can wear it with a maxi skirt, tailored pants, shorts, and culottes — the possibilities are endless. Plus, when in doubt, you can always throw on a white tee for your plane ride or road trip.

4. Denim Jacket

No matter the season, a good ol’ denim jacket is the best lifesaver. It is stylish, comfy, and thick — perfect for warming up for a quick nap at the airport. It looks great with black, white, gray, and beige. Pairing it with a floral ensemble is also a good idea as it balances the elements present by adding a classic and neutral show.

5. Lightweight Jacket

Alternatively, you can bring a lightweight jacket to the airport during the summer. The sun may be up and about, but surely, you can’t survive in the airport or the plane with a crop top without catching a bit of a cold. Choose a comfortable but still cute jacket to dress up a pair of leggings.

On the other hand, if you like to keep a light suitcase during colder months, a pocketable down jacket is your best bet.

6. Leather Jacket

A leather jacket is the best alternative to a denim jacket if you’re looking for something thick, stylish, and durable. If your style is edgier, a leather jacket is the best travel companion.

This can also elevate your outfit pretty quickly.

7. Crew Neck Sweatshirt

I’m loving the crew neck sweatshirt right now. It can be layered with so many different outfit pieces (jacket, leggings, etc.) and is  so comfy but trendy.

Comfy And Cute Outfit Ideas

Here are my favorite cute and comfy outfit ideas for your road trip, plane ride, or general day of travel.

Denim Jacket + Crop Top + Sweats + White Sneakers

Crop top and sweats? Sloppy. Add in a nice denim jacket and a pair of sneakers? Super stylish. Traveling with comfort and style just takes a little statement piece to stand out!

Black Hoodie + Black Pants + Blazer + Black Sneakers

Want to make an edgy street style appearance as soon as you get to your destination? Adding a little unique twist can make up for it. You’ll be ready to rock the streets when you land.

White Collared Blouse + Knit Sweater + Black Leggings + Black Sneakers

Going on a business trip? You don’t have to wear sweats to stay comfortable during a long trip. Wear a nice knitted sweater over a white collared blouse for a presentable, stylish, and comfy fit. You’ll never have to worry about seeing a client on your flight.

Crop Sweater + High-waist Leggings + Sneakers

Want to keep it simple? You don’t have to make a lot of fuss – especially if you’re rushing about or if you’re just trying to keep it a hundred percent comfy.

Oversized Sweater Dress + Sneakers

Traveling in the cold seasons? An oversized sweater dress and a pair of sneakers can keep you snug and cozy in one go. This is one of my favorite looks for a road trip or train ride during the fall/winter.

Knit Crop Sweater + Black Biker Shorts + White Sneakers

A carefree ensemble. Put on a nice knit crop sweater and a pair of biker shorts so you can move swiftly and freely during long waiting times. I would bet for a Kim Kardashian-inspired ensemble (beige crop sweater + black biker shorts + bulky sneakers).

White Shirt + Ripped Jeans + Jacket on waist + White Sneakers

Don’t know what to wear? Wear what you already have! With an all-around white tee paired with distressed jeans, you can easily come up with a complete stylish fit. For an added accent, you can put on a jacket or sweater on waist that can come in handy when it starts to get cold in-flight.

Black Sports Bra/Crop Top + Leggings + Oversized Coat + Sneakers

Going on a quick trip? A sports bra top underneath a nice oversized coat can give you a chic on-the-go aura – like you’re waiting to get on the next plane for a yoga session in a different city. Love the vibe!

Grey Shirt + Denim Jacket + Black Pants + White Sneakers

You can never go wrong with monochrome. Black pants and a nice loose grey shirt can make a nice outfit for quick coffee trips during a layover. A denim jacket can keep you warm when the A.C. is on high!

Striped B&W Tee + Silk Scarf + White Pants + White Sneakers

Want to travel like a Parisian? A striped tee and a printed silk scarf can give you a classy, chic, and sophisticated aura. Personally, the best outfit to get croissants with.

Vintage Rock Band Tee + Leather Jacket + Washed Denim Pants + Sneakers

If your style is more hipster-like, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t rock a vintage band tee on your trip. The best example of this ensemble would be one of Kendall’s favorite fits. For the jeans, I would prefer to wear distressed black than dyed denim. But it’s all up to you!

White Tee + Black Jeans + Grey or beige Cardigan + Sneakers

Wearing a cardigan is like wearing a blanket. If you’re dreaming of a comfy, cozy trip, you should get invest in a high-quality cardigan.

Where To Buy Comfy Travel Pieces:

Converse is one of the best cult classic brands out there. Starting out as a basketball shoe, it has grown into a stylish wardrobe must-have. No matter what your personal style is, a pair of Chucks can seamlessly blend into it. Plus, they have a variety of colors to choose from. Personally, I would pick their Black All-Star Chucks , but playing with colors is a fun way to add spark to your outfit.

Alternative to the classic All-Star pair, Vans play a healthy competition with Converse. It started out as a skate shoe, eventually growing into a must-have pair in hipster communities. If your style is composed of rock band tees, distressed jeans, plaid — Vans is a good brand to consider.

If you have a bit more budget, a pair of classics from Nike is a great addition to your travel fits. My favorite is a pair of white Air Force casual sneakers that I usually pair with neutral ensembles, monochrome outfits, and printed dresses! It is a bit bulkier than a pair from Converse and Vans, but it balances the volume in some of my outfits.

If you’re a sneakerhead, there are a lot of other choices from Nike as well – a pair of Jordans look good with any comfy travel outfit as well.

American Apparel

American Apparel is good at providing high-quality basics and stylish clothing. A lot of their pieces are inspired by trendy silhouettes, but they are all grounded in versatile and classic elements. Crop tops, skirts, and denim are some of my favorites from them. Plus, they’re a hundred percent American-made!

Uniqlo is a home for affordable high-quality, technical, comfy, and stylish pieces. This is the haven for people who are passionate about packing light. Find pocketable down jackets, windbreakers, vests, and Airism (lightweight) technology tees that are guaranteed accessible — no matter your budget.

H&M has everything for the trendy traveler. Find rock band tees, distressed tops, cut-out crop tops that look laid-back and fashionable. They also have the best selection of sweaters in my opinion. From knits, crops, cotton, and more!

If you’re a fan of DIY-inspired clothing, you can find a lot of distressed jeans and cut-out shirts from the store. I’ve always loved DIY, but being able to buy clothes that are close to my imaginings always comes in handy. And H&M almost always gets what I have in mind

Along with H&M, you can mix up your travel wardrobe with classy and “trendy basics” from Zara. I particularly love their neutral and classy palettes (beige, cream, black, gray). And their coats are always on point!

Nordstrom is home to luxury brands like Marc Jacobs, Balenciaga, Bottega, Veneta, Coach, Burberry, and Jacquemus. I love bringing a small belt bag that can fit my travel needs (passport, ID, wallet, keys, etc) along with a tote where I can fit a book to keep me company but I don’t keep important belongings in a tote where I am most likely to replace. In that way, you don’t end a trip empty-handed.

What to Wear on a Long Flight: Comfortable Essentials From Everlane, Lunya, and More

By Andrea Cheng and Madison Flager

Image may contain Clothing Pants Adult Person TShirt Blouse Footwear Shoe Long Sleeve Sleeve and Knitwear

All products featured on Condé Nast Traveler are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Let's face it: When you’re about to embark on a six-plus-hour intercontinental flight and your body is buzzing with anxiety at the thought of potential delays, missed connections, and lost luggage, piecing together a stylish outfit is probably the least of your concerns. Factor in the near-impossible feat of sleeping upright on a plane and tolerating snoring seat mates, and it feels necessary to prioritize comfort on long-haul flights.

While matching sweatsuits are one (beloved) way to go, there are plenty of options in the way of loungewear these days. Pieces made of finely woven knits that feel as soft as a cloud, compression fabrics that prevent swelling, and buttery cashmere travel blankets that you can cocoon yourself in are among the ones we recommend for overnight or otherwise lengthy flights. Below, find 18 brands whose clothes and accessories will make deciding what to wear on a long flight as easy and comfortable as possible, broken down by categories:

  • Performance wear

Loungewear sets

Cashmere and wool basics, elevated basics, plane to office clothing.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

Performance wear and athleisure

Lululemon is a perennial favorite for basic black leggings , snag-one-when-you-can belt bags , and comfortable joggers . But don't overlook the brand's tops: Pieces like this oversized cropped crew and the cotton half-zip shown below are made with soft, breathable fabrics that'll keep you feeling good from plane to car to hotel.

travel on outfit

Huckberry serves up menswear basics made for the active traveler, including soft yoga joggers and water-resistant workwear-inspired pants that will take you from the plane to a bike ride or beachside stretch session with ease. The brand's bestsellers section is full of pieces you can wear in the air and repeat on vacation, like the 72-Hour Merino T-shirt and The 365 Pant. You can find travel and outdoor gear from brands like Patagonia, Barbour, Marine Layer, and Saturdays NYC on Huckberry's site, too.

You may have heard the Vuori pitch before (the brand is an active podcast sponsor for many popular shows like Smartless and Crime Junkie ): It offers premium performance apparel inspired by the active coastal California lifestyle, and wants to offer a new perspective on the athleisure category as a whole. I admit, the clothing is some of the softest I've ever worn, which certainly sets itself apart from more traditional activewear brands like Nike or Adidas. Try Vuori's joggers, shorts, and super-soft tees for an outfit that feels like pajamas, but looks respectable enough for the airport lounge .

Outdoor Voices

When warm weather is in the forecast, the exercise dress comes back out. Often designed with shorts underneath and a built-in bra, the practical, sweat-wicking one-pieces are a great multi-purpose vacation outfit: Wear one on the plane with a jean jacket layered on top, then break it out again for a pickleball game or afternoon walking around to see the sights. Outdoor Voices makes a comfortable one with adjustable straps and a built-in shorts liner. If a dress doesn't sound appealing, opt for the Zephyr pant—it's made of a lightweight performance fabric that will serve you well in warm destinations. Of course, the brand's classic leggings are a great in-flight option, too.

Image may contain: Clothing, Tank Top, Dress, and Vest

If the only thing that comes to mind when you hear the name Spanx is shapewear, you're missing out. The brand has extended its offerings over the years to include everything from work dresses to jeans and blazers. But for long-haul flights, we're partial to the AirEssentials collection, which has a super-soft, drapey, scuba-like fabric. Shop The Travel Edit for even more style options, including shorts and jumpsuits.

If it's good enough for Oprah, it's got our vote. Cozy Earth's bamboo joggers received the media mogul's official seal of approval in 2020, by way of her Favorite Things list, and after trying them on ourselves, we understand why. The mix of premium viscose from bamboo, acrylic, and Spandex produces a super smooth, cool-to-the-touch fabric that'll make you feel like you're wrapped in your favorite set of sheets. The brand's Stretch-Knit Bamboo Lounge tee and Ultra-Soft Bamboo hoodie are among other bestsellers.

Any physician will tell you that sitting in the same position for long periods of time is bad for you: It limits blood circulation, causes swelling, and increases the risk for blood clots. Movement around the cabin helps keep your blood moving, as does wearing the right garments. Sleepwear brand Lunya has an all-in-one fix with its Restore Travel Kit, which comes with a basic tank, a long-sleeve tee, a pair of leggings, a sleep mask, and socks (former city guides director Corina Quinn is a big fan ). The bundle is neatly packaged in a very practical mesh laundry bag, and each item is crafted from a breathable Pima cotton-blend fabric that promises to help increase blood flow and oxygen levels, ultimately improving circulation.

Friend + Folk

Launched in 2022, Friend + Folk is a woman-owned , gender- and size-inclusive line made in downtown Los Angeles at Bomme Studio , a CFDA-approved, ethical and sustainable production house. The pieces are produced in small batches to reduce waste, and are supremely comfortable—the Joon joggers are a personal favorite of mine, but for a more classic sweatpant, try the Harbor style. Other in-flight staples include the long-sleeve Witter T-shirt and Crosby classic hoodie .

Spun from the finest goat hair, Naadam’s 100 percent Mongolian cashmere basics are so ridiculously soft, it feels like a luxurious blanket that you can wear out in public—and on transcontinental flights. The built-in perks of cashmere include high breathability, and anti-wrinkle and odor-blocking benefits. The brand's tailored sweaters and hoodies will keep you comfy without looking unkempt.

Former Traveler editor Noah Kaufman calls Ibex's clothing “some of the nicest, most comfortable stuff I've ever put on.” Made of Ibex's signature Merino wool fabric, the clothes are built to curb odor, and the fabric is naturally thermoregulating—meaning you can wear pieces year-round—and smooth against skin (no itchiness here). He's been wearing a pair of ultra-soft joggers around the house, and says they'll make a great addition to any long-haul flight uniform.

Athleta has plenty of great leggings, workout wear, and athleisure, but if you're looking for something a little more versatile to wear throughout your trip, check out the Brooklyn mid-rise ankle pant. Made with a stretchy, wrinkle-resistant, these pants are comfortable enough to wear on a plane, but have a tailored fit that can be dressed up or down. They're also super lightweight, in case you decide to pack them on the way back home.

Universal Standard

If there's a brand that can get us to wear "real clothes" on a plane, it's Universal Standard. With clothes from size 00 to 40, its mission is to create clothing that looks and feels good on every body, using fabrics like premium Peruvian cotton, soft Italian Merino wool, and French satin-back crepe to do so. The Promenade linen jumpsuit could easily be worn all day long, and the Sally Liquid Jersey shirt dress is a piece you'll wear again and again. As for the jeans, before you shake your head, know that the brand's styles are stretchy, with a truly relaxed, comfortable fit—look to the ComfortDenim collection for the most plane-friendly pieces. If jeans are a no-go (fair), try the Go-Stretch pant for a looser waistband.

With its penchant for solid colors (and the occasional stripe) and classic silhouettes, Everlane makes tons of mix-and-match travel essentials . The Cashmere Stroopwafel turtleneck and Dream Pant are some of our readers' favorites, but we'd also point to the Perform legging , Re-Track barrel sweatpant , and Felted Merino half-zip as great long-haul flight pieces.

Image may contain: Sonny Zhou, Blouse, Clothing, Shirt, Dress Shirt, and Pants

Free People

Free People is known for its breezy, bohemian-style clothes, so of course they'd make the kind of pants, coats, and utility suits that are comfortable enough to wear on a plane. The Studio to Street collection and FP Movement collections are filled with layering pieces and roomy pants you can throw on after a workout, though like leggings or yoga pants, they serve many purposes. For overnight flights, we like the Hailee Cardi set. If you're in need of a versatile jacket you can wear on cold planes and chilly fall evenings alike, the loose-fitting Dolman Quilted Knit remains popular and comes in tons of different colorways.

Banana Republic

If you're not the type to wear loungewear on a plane, no matter the flight time, you've still got options that prioritize comfort. Banana Republic's linen resort pieces fit the mold, with slim-cut and wide-leg pants, button-up short-sleeve shirts , and more options that can take you from the airport to the office, or to the resort pool, depending on how you style them.

Versatile and multidimensional, Aday ensures that every single one of its items has more than one feature—the result of working with engineers to source technologically advanced fabrics that can wick moisture, regulate heat, defy wrinkles, resist ultra-violet rays, and so much more. Simply put, Aday's pieces are exactly what you want to wear on a long flight. There’s the technical silk wrap top that not only does all of the above, but can be worn more than one way. The thin strap tank , also made from technical silk, is the perfect layering piece (plus, it has adjustable straps). And finally, to complete the ideal traveling outfit, there’s the super-stretchy elastic-banded pant, which is both quick-drying and wrinkle-resistant.

The maker of many a wardrobe staple, including some of our favorite basic tees , California-based brand Buck Mason offers plenty of thermal tees, sweaters, and button-ups that make great layering pieces on chilly flights. For a classic but slightly elevated sweats look, Traveler 's associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny loves traveling in the brand's cozy sweatpant and crew neck .

Jenni Kayne

Embody the laid-back, California-cool aesthetic with pieces from Jenni Kayne. Her designs are made to last, and often come in soothing neutral tones. You can find comfortable but structured essentials like the polished Rio trouser and the popular Cocoon sweater, as well as cozy accessories like cashmere socks and oversized blanket shawls .

Even though I like to feel comfortable in my clothing during flights, I don’t want to necessarily throw away style either. Check out a few airplane outfit ideas to feel relaxed but still look chic when traveling!

Best Real People Airplane Outfit Ideas

Table of contents.

Mastering the right outfit to wear on an airplane is no easy feat. You have the plane climate and destination climate to consider, and you want to still look stylish while feeling comfortable.

One of the key ways I come up with flight outfit ideas is by creating an interchangeable capsule wardrobe . Not only does it help with simplified packing, which can easily fit into a carryon suitcase, but I can revolve what I wear on the airplane to sightseeing, nature excursions, and even nights out on the town.

airplane-outfit

A travel capsule wardrobe should be composed of soft, yet packable fabrics that can compress and be organized into packing cubes . And each item should mix and match with each other, be super versatile, so that means I can pack less but still cover all my activities. And, of course, have nice styling details too!

Anyway, recently I felt moved to think about the best airplane outfit ideas due to people-watching at the airport and noting some real-life travel looks that fit well in capsule wardrobes. (They basically rocked!)

Regardless of your style, we’ve recreated these looks that may spark something in you as well:

  • Easy Comfort
  • Glam Globetrotter

Cardigan |  V-neck |  Leggings  |  Boots  |  Duffel

Easy Comfort Airplane Outfit

This by far is the easiest airport outfit for anyone to duplicate. Easy to wear basics in neutral interchangeable colors plus a few stylish accessories – simple flight fashion!

The perfect formula for an easy to wear comfortable airplane outfit is a classic combo of fitted tee plus leggings. Pair with a cute yet cozy layer such as a long cardigan and shoes that are easy to remove to go through security.

Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit

This look is definitely for the ultra-glam jetsetter. I saw this airport outfit on a woman as she went through security and I couldn’t help but stare in awe at her elegance and designer style. I’m not sure I could pull this off but cheers to you if you can!

airplane-outfit

Dress  |  Scarf  |  Sandals  |  Handbag

Airplane Outfit for a Beach Vacation

One of the loveliest airplane travel outfit ideas—what a great look if you’re headed to a warm destination! I’d definitely carry a cardigan with me in my personal item for the in-flight chills but this is sexy, sophisticated, and a cool take on this season’s neutral – military green.

airplane-outfit

Boots  | Pants  |  Shirt  |  Jacket  |  Bag |  Carry-On

First Class Airplane Outfit

This outfit is definitely more up my alley, at least when traveling to cities. The one issue is the metal on the jacket and boots but they’re easy to take off as you go through the security line. Totally worth a little effort.

airplane-outfit

Trench  |  T Shirt  |  Denim  |  Trainers | Purse

Casual yet Chic Airplane Outfit

Understated elegance, this classic look seems to be a timeless airport outfit in Europe since I saw women of all ages sporting an ensemble such as this. The trench was EVERYWHERE at Heathrow airport in November and rightfully so. It’s an investment piece that’s sure to stand the test of time. Seriously, one of the top outfits to wear on airplane trips!

airplane-outfit

Boots | Sweater  |  Jeans  |  Coat  | Handbag

Feminine Airplane Outfit

I absolutely love this airplane style outfit and can imagine an epic picture in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The neutral wardrobe is offset by the bold statement coat which is a great travel strategy when traveling in the winter. After all, your pictures will mostly be of you in a coat, why not make it a great one?

airplane-outfit

Trousers  |  Top  |  Boots

Boho Cozy Airplane Outfit

This look took me by surprise but I really like the unexpected combination. Easy to wear, comfortable pieces with weather-friendly boots , and a few key boho pieces that exude editorial-worthy confidence. Love it!

My Best Airplane Outfits

Now that we’ve given you some real-people inspiration, check out some of my favorite flying outfit ideas from yore, along with the seasons I wore them!

Wearing my All Saints leather iacket with Delsey Suitcase during my flight to Thailand

Fall can be a tricky time of year. I try to avoid going full-on winter and in this case, I was traveling to Thailand during October, so knew I’d shed things like scarves for an airy tank top upon landing.

I love this look because it’s clean and easy to put together. The pants have a give and the coat is fitted but I can move my elbows and arms with ease.  A scarf is particularly topical for fall because when there’s a slight chill it instantly warms me up.

airplane-outfit

My flight from US to England with All Saints leather jacket , | Ankle Boots ( similar ),  Delsey suitcase and Rebecca Minkoff backpack

While I tend to wear simple colors, I still like a bit of rock n’ roll edge to my look every so often!

For this airplane outfit, I was traveling during the wintertime from the US to England and wanted some warmth, so I wore a leather jacket and layered a shirt underneath that. I then put on my fave jeans and then slid in some funky low-heeled ankle boots. I was comfy and cozy I tell you!

airplane-outfit

Blouse | Spanx Leggings | Tory Burch Flats | Longchamp Tote | Delsey Suitcase

This beauty is my new fave airplane outfit that’s awesome for spring (or early fall)!

The look is super stylish but seriously comfortable. I prefer movement and stretch in my pants when I fly and these Spanx faux leather leggings have give in the elastic waistband and knee area. They’re kinda my go-to’s now!

airplane-outfit

Spanx Moto Leggings | Ankle Boots ( similar ) | Delsey Suitcase | Nomad Lane Bento Bag

Good flight shoes are a must so I seek out flexible flats, comfy boots,  or slip-ons that don’t pinch my feet and can be easily removed through security. These Tory Burch Minnie flats were a new buy and so surprisingly comfy and I walked from terminal to terminal with no problems!

Check out reviews for both the Tory Burch Minnie flats and the Spanx faux leather leggings !

Wearing Spanx leggings and black ankle boots as my favorite airplane outfit

Editor’s Winter Favorite: All-Black Chic Airplane Outfit

This is by far, my FAVORITE and best outfit for airplane travel during the winter! It’s warm and layered, so I can take things off/on when needed, and I still feel fashionable.

I was actually going from cold to warm weather, so I wore my heaviest items on the plane and changed once I arrived at my destination of Bonaire. And when I say “heavy” that refers to my coat and boots.

The secret to a capsule wardrobe is to include packable items. My coat is Anatomie, it’s well made and can compress down fairly well, and my boots were a little bulkier but I always look for ones that are as lightweight as possible. And these ones are waterproof so it can handle the elements and still look cute!

Feel free to check out the best waterproof ankle boots for more inspiration!

airplane-outfit

Jacket (similar) | Top (similar) |  Pants (similar) | Slip-ons (similar) | Messenger Bag

I wore this when I hit Europe in the summertime and it was a durable, adorable ensemble I remember fondly!

For me, it’s important to have a comfy flight outfit, and I usually re-wear the same outfit for travel days thereafter, whether I’m flying or taking a train. If I’ve really nailed down an outfit that works for me, then it’s a keeper!

I swear by using lightweight pants and jacket   . It has lightweight fabrics that don’t retain moisture so I feel airy in hot climates. For a top, the sleeveless blouse comes with me for every summer trip! It’s comfortable and breathable, and I can layer it with a cardigan or light jacket if need be.

Again, shoes need to feel right, on or off a flight, and I discovered these Skechers Mary Jane slip-ons ( which are now sold out but here’s a similar one ) because readers raved about them for years! Their memory foam insole means my feet feel cushioned all the time!

More of My Airplane Outfits

I hope you found these cute airplane outfits motivating to begin piecing together your own personal capsule wardrobe that can move from “up in the air” to “on the ground!”

airplane-outfit

Aside from the wardrobe choices above, what stood out above all was that all these travelers had freshly styled hair and makeup, which really adds the finishing touch to even the most casual of airport ensembles. Don’t forget that a good blow dry and mascara goes a long way!

I love these travel outfit ideas! I want to be comfy when I travel, but I also want to look cute and not lazy or sloppy. These outfit ideas are just what I need to help me put together the perfect travel outfit for myself!

Diana Janisbel

Wait! Thanks so much for sharing these outfit ideas, it feels so easy to recreate when you have it with pictures like this. I travel a lot and my outfits can be hit or miss haha

Heidi Quan

Love these polished yet comfy outfit suggestions. So key to be comfortable yet still stylish even when traveling on those long haul flights. Love them all.

Cathleen

Most of my flights are between the US and Southeast Asia – so I’m usually just focused on how to be as comfortable as possible for 30+ hours. I love Vuori joggers (so soft!!) and a tank top for if I get hot with a jacket for if I get cold. I do need to step up my game when I fly in the States so I appreciate all the stylish ideas!

tammi

So many cute options. Thank you for sharing both the suggestions as well as some personal examples. It’s always fun to get new ideas of combinations that will look cute and travel well.

Michele Smith

Luv this article! I have followed travel fashion girl for several years. I found a video on U-tube on how to pack for 10-days in Europe using a carry-on bag. Guess what? It worked. Have been using capsule wardrobe concept ever since. I use solid hair products at home too. Always great to see the latest thoughts on fashion forward looks.

Amy Hanley

This is so helpful! I am very impressed by those that can wear upscale, polished blazers, jeans and dresses when traveling. I appreciate that you have practical but stylish options for us leggings and cardigan sweater gals! Wish the Skechers slip ones were still in stock.

Amy Fowler

Love wearing my go-to and heavier items on the plane – jean jacket, white tennies for spring/summer, and Chelsea boots for fall/winter. Always bring a layering piece in my personal bag, and tie a scarf on my personal bag too. The temp always seems to fluctuate between boarding and in flight, so it’s nice to have options.

Avagail

My go-to outfit is leggings and a merino wool t-shirt – super casual, but I want to step up my airport outfits so this post was super helpful with ideas!

Jill

I love all of these outfits! To me, the airport is one of the best things about travel and I look forward seeing, walking, exploring as much of it as I can. Therefore, the most important part of the travel outfit are the comfortable shoes!

Ellen

I’m all about comfort on an airplane. These suggestions are great!

Karen

Taking my first International trip in a few months. I’ve never taken a night flight and didn’t know what to wear since we arrive in the morning and will be on the go right away! These choices are all so helpful! Now to only decide, I love them all!

Darcy Hartman

I recently bought a couple of pairs of Old Navy high waisted power soft wide leg pants in navy and in black. These have been perfect for travel. Super comfy on the plane, and they look nice enough for conferences. I love all your looks here!

Christine Ince

So many great tips! I’ve used your packing lists to successful pack for a two week Italy vacation in a carryon. I was able to put together plenty of fashionable interchangeable outfits and I’m so grateful that I packed light! My red eye travel outfit was perfect and included layers. A tank, lightweight linen tee, scarf that doubled as a blanket, and a pair of athleta Brooklyn heights joggers. Their joggers and trousers are perfect for flying.

Ann Rumberger

Love seeing all these options! Such variety for any style of airline travel and any type of style. Great inspiration.

Angela Young

Thanks for this article! Having had flight cancellations where I ended up in the same clothes for a couple days, I always think about what outfit would serve me well – versatile, comfortable, and will look okay a bit mussed or wrinkled… These outfits look chic and fit my style, too. Thank you!

Bryanna

Thank you for this article, super helpful and I completely agree! More and more I’m learning about capsule wardrobes and how important they are!

Patricia Hellrung

Great ideas for travel outfits…comfort and style. Using a lot of these ideas for my Fall European trip! Appreciate all the great tips

Karen Clements

I love all of these ideas for outfits to wear when flying on a plane. Two of my favorite pairs of pants to wear for flying are a pair of Quince linen pants which I purchased upon recommendations from readers of Travel Fashion Girl and also the Eddie Bauer Departure pants. I get so may great ideas for clothing and what to pack, etc. from these blogs.

Caryn Goode

I love all these options. I struggle with choosing an airport outfit with pieces I can wear again. Thank you!

Jill Hauwiller

Love all these great options!

Georgia Small

I’ve learned so many great tips from TFG as well as the TFG Facebook group. Thanks so much for all that you do.

Lynne

Great ideas. I always layer because I am always hot, but then it can get cold in the airport or plane!

Lynn Pike

What to wear on the plane, especially a long haul vacation, is always a challenge. Stylish yet comfortable, easy to wear yet not sloppy, arriving at your destination not looking like you have spent hours in the plane. Loved the outfits by season! This site never disappoints! What a gem 💎 ✨️!

Lisa Parker

I love all of these, especially the understated elegance. You have such beautiful taste and have inspired me, not only with my travel wardrobe, but also in my everyday wardrobe!

Beth Theisen

I love this blog post and go back to it often depending on where I am going. You make planning for travel so much fun, and a different sort of adventure for certain. I also love spotting fellow TFG travelers by their airplane outfits as well.

Tammy

Love these ideas!! I am traveling out of the country for the first time next month and, thanks to TFG, I have put together my perfect outfit! I will be comfortable and well put together. Ordering the last piece today (also a TFG recommendation). Love this site!!

Gwen

Love these ideas. Always looking for ways to be comfortable flying, while also looking stylish.

Melissa A (Missie) Berreth

What fantastic ideas! I always struggle the most with plane outfits because I want comfort but don’t want to look sloppy or old! Thank you for doing all the legwork for us!

Love these ideas! Thank you for sharing.

Kim Hoffman

It’s always a challenge finding items that travel well, are comfortable, and leaving you looking “pulled together” after a flight. These are great ideas – thanks!

Marianne Livengood

Loved all of your airplane outfits. Going to South Africa and looking for comfy outfits for 15 hour flight. Great ideas. Thanks.

Cathleen Huckaby

You ROCK! This ‘1-stop’ travel trove of wisdom, REAL-life help, and tips is a God-send! I’ve ordered many items you & other readers recommend (espec. on major holidays/Black Fri. sales). As a woman on a budget it’s a bit tough w/ all the expenSive sites (Nordstroms, JC Crew) so I appreciate you adding “Quince” as they seem to cut out the middleman/advertising. As the founder of a charity every dollar counts, thus a $340 trench coat is out, yet on Quince it’s much much less (& they have free returns!) I just ordered my 1st item from Quince & looking forward to wearing it as you highly recommended it! Thanks for ALL you do, Cathleen (RN)

Michelle

Love all the outfits! Is there an updated plus size article for the over age 60 group.

Linh Chin-Lai

I have my favorite airplane outfit: long pants (lightweight for summer, heavier for winter), sleeveless top, cardigan, tennis shoes with low rise socks.

Carol Askew

This is a post that I keep coming back to again and again every time I travel. I have recommended this blog and Facebook group to many of my friends. I consider the Facebook group to be the single most helpful group that I am in. Of course I do live and love to travel lol.

Saby Herrera

I’m always looking for airport outfit ideas! Love all the different options and styles. Thanks for sharing!

Nancy Jo Tschida

I love the variety of options too as well as the total look that includes everything to create the outfits even lipstick.

Lauren Andrea Morgan

I love this post. Especially the black and blue with leather jacket. I love options for women of all ages and sizes. I can never color coordinate, so I appreciate the ideas!!

Nancy Y Buchanan

I honestly think the “airplane” outfit is the hardest one of all – LOL!! Since I’m west coast based all my flights to Europe are 10+ hours so… a VERY long day of travel! The Easy Comfort” outfit is definitely my style – cute, comfortable and practical since it features two bulky and hard to pack wardrobe items – a long cardigan and boots! A variation of this look is going to be my choice when traveling to London and Croatia next spring!

Ilene Smith

Always love your ideas! I find that my travel outfits change based on where I’m going and what I’m doing once I arrive. But often some iteration of what you’re showing.

Sinéad Shah

I travel in Athleta Brooklyn pants that I found because of this site. They dress up or down and are super comfortable and also can be washed in the shower and dry overnight. Awesome travel staple

Teri Naiser

While I have yet to do a carry-on-only trip, I’ve learned so many valuable tips from your site! I now have the best travel pants and a wardrobe capsule that mixes and matches beautifully! Thanks for all you do!

Tammy Fellows

All of these are great options, thank you! Soooo much nicer looking and just as comfy as some of the traveling outfits I see at my job as a flight attendant! Love your ideas!

Tobi-Velicia

I love these outfit options! I usually wear a short DVF wrap dress with leggings and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for travel. But I definitely want to try a few of these amazing looks.

Sherri Killam

I have followed Travel Fashion Girl for some time and I cannot even tell you how many times I have read about the best shoes for travel and the best bags (handbags, backpacks) that are secure and stylish. It is because of you that I discovered Travelon. This post about what to wear on the plane with accompanying photos really hits home. We are traveling to Europe at the end of this week and I had vacillated between wearing stretchy Ponte pants that unfortunately have not pockets and blue jeans. After reading some posts on Facebook and seeing these pictures (and knowing how much I rely on pockets), the jeans have won out. Plus, not having to pack them will reduce the weight in my suitcase. Please know that even those of us who are not very chatty usually are reading and enjoying TFG and are very thankful for this resource. May all your journeys be happy ones.

Colleen Hackett

I’ve been following Travel Fashion Girl for some time and love all the tips and real life scenarios. I’m in my 60’s and am mostly into being comfortable with some fashion thrown in. I love that the styles shown are for the younger women all the way up to us traveling seniors! I can always find something here that works for me.

Cheryl Finley

I bought the tee and joggers from Sexy Modest Boutique. I have traveled in them for the past year. They are comfortable, breathable, and I can create different looks with jackets, shoes, scarves, etc…I have black in both pieces. When worn together it looks like a jumpsuit which I like, but I also use each piece with my other clothing to create outfits, so they are part of my capsule. I just recently traveled to Europe and was very comfortable on the long flights (felt like pjs).

Gwen Pinkston

I’ve been looking at these. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on wearing for travel.

Beth Williams

I love this post! So informative and the photos make such a difference in seeing how it all works together.

Liz

I tend to wear long dresses on flights. That way my legs are covered if it’s cold but also, I’m not too hot when I get off the plane. My go to has Spaghetti straps that I paid with a cardigan or jean jacket. That is the ultimate in comfort for me!

Christine Butkiewicz

I’ve been following Traveling Fashion Girl for the past year. Joined the group after my husband surprised me with a trip to Italy. Love to travel but struggle with overpacking and never seeming to be able to put together an outfit. Your blog has been soooo helpful and I’ve learned so much! Thank you for all the interesting information and truly helpful advice!!! Love it!

Zoe Green

I love everything about Travel Fashion Girl! The tips on packing and clothing are spot on. So glad to have found you. Keep traveling!

Loredana Ragone

Your blogs and fb group have helped me be a better Travel Fashion Girl, thank you so much for your advice and suggestions! I love this community.

Sarah Dorn

I wear a lounge set from Duluth Trading Co. on long-haul flights. It’s a tank top with a built-in bra, it’s very comfortable! It’s a monochromatic look so it looks chic.

Cindy Merrill

Such cute outfits! I am inspired to get some new travel outfits!

Jennifer Bennett

I’m definitely an easy comfort kind of traveler, haha. My go-to’s are either Fabletics leggings or Anatomie pants (always stretch!) with 2-3 layers on top, typically a tank or tee with a long sleeve shirt or sweater over and optional scarf because I am always cold on the plane but hot in the airport. I’m an options girl for sure! I do try to style up with my tops though so I look put together vs frumpy.

Jane Bitsicas

So many good ideas. I love having a pulled together travel look, rather than just any old sweats and t-shirts that I see so much of. That way I can hit the ground running when I arrive and not have to change.

Kathleen Weissenberger

I have read and re-read so many of the blog posts. I have purchased a few items from the FB group and the TFG favorites…and I had considered myself a well seasoned frequent travel expert!

Anel Muterspaugh

The easy comfort type is the way to go for me. I mostly travel with kids si ability to be comfortable is key. Joggers, loose T-shirt, cardigan or jacket and running shoes.

Peggy Workman

Every year I fly at least once to Europe and once to Hawaii from KY. At 72, I’ve discovered that my favorite flying outfit is is midi length sleeveless black jersey dress with knee length slits on both side seams. Flexible enough to wear as a jumper, or wear it with a scarf, add a sweater, or a jacket, or a pull over sweater. It’s easier to use the toilet on an airplane but pulling something up then pulling down pants and attempting to keep them off the bathroom floor.

Ronnell Crowder

Wish more of the travel clothes came in tall.

Suzie

Thank you for elevating the idea of what’s appropriate for travel. With so many options, it’s possible to be comfortable and pulled together. It always amazes me to see what fellow travelers wear to board an airplane….and not usually in a good way 😞 Those who take the time to look nice stand out in a positive way, and that’s what I aspire to. So grateful for all of the resources here!!

GG

As someone who wears skirts 300 days of the year, I always have trouble with my airplane outfit- how to style pants?! Thanks for the inspiration!

Rose Trasatti

Love these tips plus all the others you post!

Nikki

Where is that chunky silver necklace from?

Alex

Hi Nikki, it’s from By Aris. I loooooooove their metal jewelry so much!!!! And they evenmade this custom necklace for me and named it after me. 😊 The “Alexandra” necklace: https://byaris.com/products/alexandra-necklace/

Dianne Wendling

Love your blog and all the Facebook group ideas and recommendations!!

Tiffany Cline

Great suggestions. After many years I have finally come up with my go to airport outfit. Long sleeve or short sleeve stripe tee, cardigan or blazer, black comfy pants and loafers with a scarf!

Catherine Lewis

Hello – Thank you! Trying to figure out exactly which long grey cardigan that is in first pic…the Amazon link shows several.

Hi Catherine, I have had a look for you but unfortunately it looks like this cardigan is sold out.

We do have more options on this post which you might like: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-cardigans-for-women/

Elaine

I am flying Tuesday night to Sweden for a 2 week road trip. Your article helped me choose my “flying” outfit from my Classic 12 piece capsule. Thanks to you and all your readers for taking the anxiety out of packing for my first trip since before Covid.

Cary

Love the Casual and Chic look featured above. Comfort with a pop of color!

Susan

Thank you for giving me inspiration for my airplane outfit. I have been working on it for the past month or so . . . I like to be stylish, yet comfortable. Since it will be a long 36 hours of flying/travel time, I will be changing to some comfy wide leg pants for the overnight leg, but plan on being more stylish for the first part wearing my EB black Ponte pants, Departure 2.0 long sleeve white shirt, and jean jacket. Still deciding on which shoes to wear!

Christina

Jeans are not the best thing to wear on a plane. There are lots of comfy trousers with flexibility and look a heck of a lot better. Open toes is a no-no, loafers or boots better choice for footwear. Otherwise, thanks for posting cute travel outfits for all of us!

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us Christina! ?

Carol Anne Gartland

I love all of these ideas. I do not know if I am just old-school or still believe in fairytales, but I always try and be comfortable while chic. Using my Delsey Chatelet bag ( recommended by TFG) and a faux leather backpack, I keep thinking I will be invited to First Class for a glass of champagne. lol

M

I found scarves to be a TSA tag. They ask me to remove, so they know you’re not carrying something around your neck. Even a bandanna.

Thank you for sharing your travel experiences with us!

Natalie

I like the boots in the Editor’s Tip Pick for an Airplane Outfit. They are black with buckles. Can you send the exact link to find these?

Hi Natalie, I am sorry about this but unfortunately the boots featured were the Ugg Simmens boots which have recently become unavailable. They are similar in style to the Ugg Wilde boots featured here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-waterproof-boots/ We are looking to update many of our articles so thank you for bring this to our attention. I am sorry we could not have been of more help ?

Thank you for the other options. Going on an Alaskan cruise and I was told to have waterproof shoes due to the fact it rains a lot.

Mrs C

I love sleeveless, soft cotton midi dresses with a cardigan or blazer and sneakers. We fly to Italy often, so I like to look decent. I learned my lesson about wide leg pants: They touch the floor when using the bathroom! For that reason, when wearing pants, it’s best to wear skinnies or leggings.

Hi there, thank you for sharing your go-to travel outfit with us, sounds comfortable and stylish!!! Happy travels ?

Bessie Brown Lewis

Thanks for that nugget about the wide leg pants. Will save them for a night out for our trip.

Grace Crussiah

Agree about wide leg pants. Slim or regular leg pants work for flights too.

Patti

Loved the article, always looking for ways to add a little style to my airplane standbys. Whose says you can’t look good and fly?

alex

Exactly 😉 Thanks Patti!

Jolie Johnsen

Thank you for the wardrobe inspo. The air travel outfit ideas are brilliant!

Dot Higgins

I always travel in quality knits that will keep their shape. The picture at the top of the article looked very unrealistic. If I was wearing that tucked-in cloth blouse, I’d be a wrinkled, sloppy, uncomfortable mess at the end of a 7+ hour flight. Short hops are one thing, but I’ve yet to see someone look so fresh after a trans-continental flight.

Great point Dot! These outfits are only based on people I saw in London so I can’t really be sure of how long they were traveling. Thanks for the feedback!

Linda Goodfellow

Nice!! I loved every one of these outfits.

Thanks Linda!

Julia K

love the military green outfit! so chic and looks comfy..

alex

Awesome! Glad you found one you like!

Elizabeth Jones

My favourite! I always wear a dress…mid calf next time. Cardi, trench, rope low wedge sandals. Soo comfy, smart for any age! Dress is always loose fitting.

Wendy

Any suggestion on where to get the striped wide-leg pants? The link isn’t working.

Hi Wendy! How about these? http://bit.ly/22T8DMk

Claire Sparks

Love the pictures of you at St. Pancras Station in London. Love all the outfits but especially the pink ensemble for Paris.

Thank you Claire! 🥰

Kathy Peters

Can’t wait to get ready and travel light for my upcoming trip to Croatia. Thank you for all the great tips!

Kate

I’m definitely a cross between easy comfort, french and rocker chic when I travel. Comfort if key, but I would prefer not to look like a slob.

There are so many comfortable clothes available, no need to go to the airport in sweats 😉

Rhonda

Since I don’t check luggage, my first rule is to wear the heaviest clothes. So for my flight from US to Europe in a few weeks, that means jeans, a sweater, and boots. I wish I could wear yoga pants to facilitate sleeping on the overnight flight!

Why not carry your yoga pants in your carryon and change out of your jeans before you board the flight? Or wear leggings under your jeans and then remove them? 😉

Irene

I’m traveling from Alaska to Spain and I would shoot myself if i had to travel in tight uncomfortable, deep vein thrombosis inducing jeans 🙂 Pack lighter and leave your jeans in the carryon. Wear leggings on the plane. The difference in weight is minimal.

Hi Irene, do you dive in Alaska? I ask because of your email 🙂 I love scuba diving so that sounds incredible!

Sandy

Some lovely outfits esp like the pink. But, I wonder how did they manage , fine on the way out, but what about when they arrived….have you seen how small the plane cubicles are, and how long the impatient queues on board can be when travelling ‘cattle class’?

With the exception of the Glam Globetrotter they all seemed pretty easy to get in and out of. They’re all mostly just a nicer version of jeans and tee 😉

Theresa

I love to ear comfortable but classy outfit in the plane. I have scored some upgrades a. Because I asked nicely and b. Because I looked like I was a perfect fit for Business or First Class. White London shirt and blazer or trench. Black pants and either nice loafers or boots. A scarf or pashmina. Fresh make up and hair coiffed.

Sounds like the perfect first class look!

Sara

LOVE the ideas! The military green outfit is tres chic and I can’t get over that pink coat. <3

-Sara http://www.coveritgirl.blogspot.com

Thanks Sara!

Michelle

I’m the Easy Comfort type, although I really enjoy being all dressed up (especially for short trips). But on a flight, especially a longer one, I prefer to be comfortable…

It would be nice to travel in glamorous outfits like celebrities but how do they deal with the lack of comfort?

Zoe

Maybe they change into pyjamas for the actual flight?! Not to mention the use of stylists before getting to the arrivals hall of the airport!

My recent autumn/winter travelling outfit of choice is a grey marl jersey dress with 3/4 length sleeves, which I wear with thermal tights (from Marks & Spencer’s) and a merino wool cardigan or sweater. I don’t bother with many accessories when travelling, apart from a scarf – and obviously a coat and gloves/hat if I’m outdoors! This outfit has really worked well for me, even on an uncomfortable overnight long haul flight that was delayed by 3 hours!

Most of the outfits looked pretty comfortable…with the exception of the “Glam Globetrotter” outfit that is! The jewelry, hair, and makeup made the biggest difference from casual to chic. Sounds like we have a similar winter travel outfit – comfortable dress plus tights!

Solange

Wish I could find the ARMY Green Dress for the Beach Vacation. It’s EXACTLY what I’ve been lookn for.

25 Chic travel outfits: How to look stylish on vacation

How to look stylish on vacation

Fall happens to be one of my favorite times of year to plan trips and vacations. Coincidentally, also one of my favorite seasons to dress for. (So, hello chic travel outfits!)

You have the hustle of summer vacation behind you,  you’ve got more time to spare, not to mention–the weather is cooler in warmer climates and much better for walking around and exploring all day! (But don’t worry, if you’re heading somewhere with warm weather, I’ve got you covered too–I cover all seasons and weather in this post!)

Maybe you’re prepping for a European adventure and need some inspo for the long flight ahead of you. (Also, you must read my Europe packing list !) Perhaps you’re headed to Cabo and need to know how to look stylish on vacation without sweating through everything you packed.

Maybe you’re planning a business trip and you need some casual but polished outfit ideas you can mix and match? (A work capsule wardrobe of sorts ?)

Hopefully you’ll come away with a few ideas you can incorporate into your own personal style, no matter what your trip calls for.

Keep reading for my best tips for putting together chic travel outfits, my recommendations for the best travel clothes, plus over 25 options of cute travel outfits to copy! (Make sure to bookmark this page for your next trip!)

First, let’s get into my tips!

How to look stylish on vacation:

My 7 tips for putting together chic travel outfits in 2023-2024.

flat shoes for travel

#1: For the most chic travel outfits, plan outfits around your shoes

The easiest place to start when you’re building stylish outfits for a vacation or a trip is  shoes . This is true especially in winter, when you’re packing and coordinating heavy shoes like boots, which IMO also happen to be the hardest kinds of shoes to style because you tend to need different pants for different boots and vice versa. This is easier in the summer months because you can easily pack 4-5 pairs of sandals or ballet flats and take up little to no room in a suitcase. The overarching rule of thumb here is that neutral colors are your friend, as it’s easier to mix and match to create the perfect outfit with very little fuss.

Here’s how I’d typically approach packing shoes by season…

One pair of cute white sneakers or even slip-on sneakers (worn on plane–maximum comfort is key here), 1-2 pair of flat sandals (usually in a nude color, secondary color would likely be black, depending on what other clothes I’m packing), maybe one pair of ballet flats, which are a great option if you’re packing for moderate temps and an occasion where you want to look polished, but don’t want to wear heels.

One pair of cute white sneakers (worn on plane), one pair flat or low-heel booties, one pair of ballet flats, one pair of loafers

One pair cute white sneakers, two pairs booties (neutral and black)–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. One pair of flats or loafers.

Winter: (Assuming very cold weather/snow/slush/rain)

Two pairs booties–at least one of these pairs should be water resistant or waterproof. I typically pack the least amount of shoes in winter as they take up the most room AND I also have to account for super bulky layers in a suitcase–I don’t have space for multiple shoes AND multiple sweaters, jackets, etc.

Able jumpsuit travel outfit

Old Able jumpsuit ( similar here ) // white court sneakers ( reviewed here )

#2: One piece outfits are your best friend (dresses, jumpsuits)

I LOVE one-piece outfits, and I think this applies particularly in the summer months, when all you really need to create a great outfit is a dress or a jumpsuit. Summer months are PRIME for this–if I’m heading to a tropical vacation, I am packing mostly dresses made of breathable fabrics and maybe a jumpsuit or two! Since you aren’t “mixing and matching” anything (because, it’s one piece) go wild–prints (florals! stripes!) fun cut-outs–whatever!

The only rule for these items is that they MUST be able to be dressed up and down, and worn with multiple types of shoes and accessories. (In my case, this usually means something can be worn with sneakers for a casual look to walk around in all day with a pair of small subtle hoops and maybe a scarf, and then swapped for a dressier shoe–a pair of sandals for example–and a pair of statement earrings, for going out to dinner/drinks.)

I think this is harder to do in cold weather, but it can absolutely still be done! For example, I wore an olive utility jumpsuit multiple times for different occasions last year in Ireland where it was wet and chilly. It looked cute with both a denim jacket and a leather jacket layered over the top. A “one and done” outfit makes packing considerably easier, and also allows you to pack a  lot  less stuff!

#3: Consider a color scheme and lean into neutral colors

Now, this only applies to things that need to be mixed and matched. I don’t count “one piece outfits” as needing to be part of a color scheme, because if you’re packing only neutral accessories and you have a one-piece outfit, it doesn’t really matter what color it is, you know? But if you’re packing mostly tops and bottoms, it will be  much  easier to put stylish outfits together if you have a color scheme in mind when packing!

Now, this doesn’t necessarily HAVE to mean you should only pack neutral colors, but I find that it’s often easier to gravitate toward neutrals for my main pieces and incorporate pops of color with accessories, lipstick, and shoes. I’m always itching for more color in the spring and summer, whereas for fall and winter, I usually feel most chic and put together in minimalist color schemes, like creams, camels and black, and using patterns and accessories to make my outfits most visually interesting!

Want to strike a balance somewhere in the middle? Consider neutrals along with a more muted version of a color–for example, a mustard, deep burgundy, or burnt orange for fall, which pairs easily with blacks and browns, or a muted dusty pink for dusty blue for spring, which pairs easily with the same neutrals–white, black, brown.

J.Crew turtleneck (old): similar here // Skirt: similar here // Zara coat: similar here //  Everlane Day Boots (their city boots are also very similar with amazing reviews.) They make AMAZINGLY comfortable shoes!

#4: Lean into prints (especially stripes!)

I have never met a stripe I didn’t love, and it’s rare that I take a trip or vacation without at least a couple of striped items in my suitcase. (This is especially true in the fall and winter months, when I’m dressing in layers!) Why? Because stripes just make everything look a little more pulled together, visually interesting, and stylish! They’re not trendy, so they’re always in style, and they look a lot more intentional than just a plain old t-shirt.

A pattern of any kind is a great way to make any outfit more fashionable, so after considering your color scheme, start thinking of options that fit within that color scheme that  also  have a bit of pattern! The easiest way I find to accomplish this is with t-shirts, sweaters, and scarves.

What about mixing prints? I give that a hard YES. Just make sure when you’re mixing prints to vary the scale and choose coordinating/complimentary colors. One print should be larger and bolder and one print should be smaller and more subtle. (You can see examples above where I’m wearing patterned hair scarves with my striped tops!) Even a floral print can be a surprisingly versatile option!

Amazon Dress and head scarf

#5: Always pack a scarf or two

I’m guessing you’ve gathered by now that I wear a LOT of scarves on vacation. In fact, it’s my #1 style hack. If you take nothing away from this post, I hope this is what you remember! Truly, the easiest way to spice up any outfit–day or night–is with a scarf. Tie one in your hair to keep it out of your face on a hot day, disguise unwashed hair (bc who has time to wash and style on vacation?!) or just as a way to make your outfit more interesting. For cooler weather, I love a cute bandana or neck scarf!

Leather jacket and jeans outfit

ABLE Leather jacket (c/o–reviewed here) // Similar Black Tee // A.Golde Riley jeans (took my normal size, they feel small but will stretch out, but size up if you want them roomier) ABLE Karla belt bag – use code JESSKEYS15 for 15% off! (c/o) Also reviewed it here!

#6: When in doubt, a great lipstick makes everything stylish:

Exhibit A: Candid photo taken in Dublin where I hadn’t washed my (air dried) hair in a couple of days, and I’m wearing a very simple outfit of a black tee, black Moto jacket, and jeans–yet somehow, the red lipstick makes it all look intentional. 😂 I swear lipstick can take the most boring, even disheveled comfortable travel look and make it “perfectly undone.” Some of my favorite lipsticks are  Ilia  (they have amazing shades but if you want something a little more subtle–Cinnabar is an amazing brick red!) and  Merit’s lipsticks  that make your lips pop without being too much to wear during the day!

#7: Don’t forget about coordinating outer layers + accessories!

Just like you want to ensure all your tops and bottoms can be mixed and matched, ensure that your outer layers can also be worn with everything you’re packing!

This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a statement color–for example, the coat I wore in Lisbon my first time visiting was a mustardy yellow camel color–it added so much punch to my outfits (and photos!) but still coordinated with everything else I had in my suitcase.

Same with my favorite dusty blue coat–it’s neutral enough to where it doesn’t clash with anything, and it adds a lot of personality (and of course, extra warmth) to all my outfits! If you want to bring a bright red crossbody purse–go for it, as long as you can wear it with everything else in your wardrobe!

Like I said, accessories are the easiest ways to add color into your outfits.

Stripes are always a good idea when it comes to chic travel outfits! Here I paired them with a white mini skirt (could also do shorts, white shorts or denim!) and of course, the hair scarf. Never not wearing a hair scarf on a Europe trip (especially when it’s hot!)

Bright and colorful romper:

Romper: Rented c/o Rent the Runway  // Boots: similar here

On my recent Napa trip I brought almost exclusively one-piece outfits. (Dresses and rompers!) I loved this one that I rented from Rent the Runway–I loved it so much I bought it! I barely needed any accessories–the colorful pattern did the talking! Renting is always a great option to ensure you are well-stocked with chic travel outfits without risk of breaking the bank!

A swing dress in breathable fabrics and red ballet flats:

Faherty Dress  //  Rothy’s Round-Toe Flats  ( reviewed here !)

An easy way to incorporate color into your travel wardrobe is with your accessories–including shoes! I love a little red ballet flat. Surprisingly, red goes with a lot of other colors–it’s easy to pair with other things in your wardrobe. You can read my Rothys review here!

The Nap Dress: one of the most versatile pieces you’ll pack for warm weather

Nap Dress travel outfit

Hill House Ellie Nap Dress  (this color/pattern is a few years old but they have so many cute colorways!)

The Hill House nap dress: my summer wardrobe work horse. I own it in 3 colors. I wore it day and night in August in Lisbon where it was sweltering! Their summery dresses are made of lightweight fabrics, and in my opinion, a great piece to always have in your suitcase for warm climates.

The perfect versatile blouse for a classic look:

Faherty Willa blouse and jeans

Headscarf: similar here // Faherty Willa blouse (c/o TTS) // A.Golde Riley jeans (took my normal size, they feel small but will stretch out, but size up if you want them roomier) // Loafers  (c/o TTS)

Chic casual basics in Napa (from my first trip in February a couple years ago!) This top has become one of my bestsellers for good reason–it just goes with everything! Here I’m styling it with jeans but would also look cute with wide-leg pants, trousers, and I’ve worn it in the summer with shorts!

Exact same outfit, just with sneakers this time, (and sans hair scarf) in Dublin!

A versatile cardigan:

Very similar outfit for cooler weather–a cream cardigan instead of a blouse, and wearing that same scarf from my Napa outfit, this time around my neck instead of in my hair!

Neutrals and stripes for extra polish: (perfect for a business trip!)

Black on black: always a winning combo

Chic travel outfit tip: wear a head scarf for an instant stylish vacation outfit

Black Turtleneck // Denim // Hair Scarf

Dinner in Lisbon: One of my favorite fall outfits–a black turtleneck, jeans, black boots, and a hair scarf!

the Sezane Gaspard cardigan:

chic travel outfit Paris street style October

Silk Scarf // Button Up Cardigan // Denim // White Court Sneakers

Okay, you get it, right? Neck scarves are cute. 😂 Another tip: I love bringing a cardigan along in my suitcase because it’s both a first layer (buttoned up the front) and a second layer (unbuttoned, over a tee or blouse!) The Sezane Gaspard cardigan that I’m wearing here is major mainstay in my fall/winter wardrobe and I own it in two colors!

A statement coat:

Chic travel outfits: how to look stylish while traveling

Mango coat  (sold out but  reviewed here !), similar here //   Sezane sweatshirt  (I’d size up, I went with M), similar here //  Sezane jeans  (see outfit #1 for details) //   New Balance sneakers  (TTS) //  J.Crew turtleneck  (TTS) //  similar headband

Here’s another example of a neutral but statement coat. I love this coat (got it from Mango last year) and it goes with so many things. I call this a “dusty seafoam” color and I think it makes the most basic outfits so cute. Also, another scarf, but a winter version. (Also Sezane! Don’t sleep on their accessories!)

Warm and cozy layers:

Chic travel outfits for winter: Quebec City–how to look stylish on vacation when its freezing

Weatherproof Boots // Weatherproof Parka // Layers: Turtleneck !

From my trip to Quebec City with Neal a few years back. Dressing for the coldest weather (we’re talking negative wind chill!) can be the most challenging of all, but I have one tip: black, black, and black. It’s the most guaranteed way to still feel chic even if you have to wear 5 layers. Also: coordinating your hats, gloves, and boots. Make sure you’re factoring your accessories into your outfits–it helps avoid that “little kid on the playground” look. I brought one black beanie and one white/neutral beanie and I always felt warm and coordinated. And my warmest black parka. (Getting a slimmer design also helps!)

Best airport/travel outfits for long travel days and long-haul flights:

I couldn’t publish this post without touching on chic travel outfits for day-of travel. If you’ve got a long journey ahead of you, the last thing you want to wear is a pair of–gasp– jeans! The perfect travel outfit can make those long haul flights go a lot quicker, so it’s worth a bit of planning ahead.

Where to begin? Coordinating loungewear makes some of the best travel outfits. Another great combo? Comfy black leggings and a cute tee that you’ll also get a lot of wear out of during your trip!

If it’s summer, a comfortable dress can actually make a great travel outfit too (I wear the famed Amazon mumu on the plane a lot) and a bonus: a dress is likely something you’ll wear over and over during your travels to warmer climates.

Another tip: consider easy on/off shoes for airport security (or plan ahead and wear socks so you aren’t barefoot on the airport floor!)

comfortable airport travel outfit

This affordable Amazon sweatshirt and matching pair of sweatpants are two of my bestsellers. Wear them together or separately to make multiple comfy airport outfits

comfortable travel outfit idea

Abercrombie sweatshirt and sweatpants , Madewell court sneakers (reviewed here)

cozy travel outfit idea

Quince cashmere cardigan (reviewed here!) Lululemon leggings (although for a long flight I’d choose something less supportive, like their Align leggings or my fave budget-dupes, the Aerie offline leggings ), Bombas socks , Kizik Lima sneakers , Lululemon city adventurer fanny pack , Amazon baseball cap

Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcase

An oldie but goodie–this is still a go-to outfit formula for me: striped tee ( this is my fave ), loose cardigan (I love Quince’s cardigans for staple sweaters–great quality for the price!), and comfy black leggings . I also love my Delsey Paris Chatalet suitcases (reviewed here ) if you’re looking for a suitcase recommendation!

WHEW, you made it to the bottom! I hope you’re feeling much more prepared for your trip. Now you know how to look stylish on vacation no matter where you’re going! Safe travels and have fun!

St. Barts Is Peak Luxury—11 Outfits I Packed to Fit the Island's Elegant French Vibe

Eliza Huber's closet at the Rosewood Le Guanahani resort in St. Barts.

Every person I asked on the four-day trip I just returned from in St. Barts told me that they ended up in the French territory because they wanted to live for a year in a place that always felt like summers do in the South of France . Many had traveled from Nice or Marseilles, planned to stay for a year, and never left. According to them, St. Barts has a bit of everything they love about their hometowns, but on the island, it's August all year long. And now that I've experienced it myself, I know what they mean. From the French pharmacies that carry viral products like Nuxe Huile, La Roche-Posay Cicaplast spray, and Biafine to the tranquil beaches and pastel-colored structures, traveling to St. Barts felt like taking a much shorter trip to the French Riviera from JFK airport, where I started my journey.

Having heard about this ahead of my trip, I knew that I had to pack for the occasion, selecting the same sorts of pieces from my wardrobe that I would if I were heading to Antibes or Villefranche-sur-Mer. I wanted to bring with me all of the colorful items in my wardrobe that don't always make sense for New York City, especially coming out of a very long winter. In a shocking move for a minimalist like me, I brought only one black clothing item—a simple halter top—with the rest of my carry-on suitcase (the Tradewind flight we took from San Juan to St. Barts had a strict weight limit for luggage, so there were no checked bags for me) containing a mix of pink, orange, and red. Given my limited packing space, I only brought along four pairs of shoes: running shoes, a pair of black Prada slingbacks for evenings, The Row mesh flats , and white flat sandals from Larroudé's just-launched collaboration with the Rosewood Le Guanahani resort , which just so happened to be the reason I was in St. Barts in the first place. One purse, minimal jewelry , and lots of skincare were the only other pieces that accompanied me on my four-day getaway in St. Barts.

Below, find the 11 outfits I packed for my trip and a full-on photo dump of arguably the most luxurious destination I've visited— ever .

A view of the ocean from my room at the Rosewood Le Guanahani resort.

Upon arrival at the Rosewood, I was escorted to my suite, where the view from the private balcony showed the sun setting over the lagoon. Every second that I wasn't in my bed or getting ready for the rest of the trip, I was outside on one of the sun chairs working, drinking coffee, or honestly, taking pictures of this view.

Eliza Huber wearing a Tory Burch sculpted minidress.

On our first night, we had a pretty low-key dinner at the hotel's restaurant in the Beach Club. We'd all been traveling since around 5 a.m., so I was more than happy to keep things pretty casual. For the occasion, I slipped on one of my all-time favorite wardrobe items: this Tory Burch sculpted, hook-and-eye minidress from the brand's S/S 23 collection. I own the matching midi skirt as well but didn't have enough room to pack it, which ended up being absolutely fine. I like how it looks as a mini, especially in a tropical setting like this.

Tory Burch tunic

Early the next morning, I woke up to grab a coffee in the Beach House before our group yoga class down at the water. Usually in hot weather like this, I stick with shorts for working out, but I knew we were doing yoga when I was packing and chose to go with leggings instead. These are from Nike. With the set and a little Aritzia workout jacket, I wore my Adidas Adizero sneakers that I recently got and have been loving for classes and outdoor runs alike.

Alate All U Sports Bra

Our yoga instructor took us to this wooden platform down by the rocks on the ocean for a relaxing vinyasa class with the sounds of the waves as background music. We didn't get too far here because a quick bout of rain arrived and forced us inside to the spa, where we continued class under an awning. For some reason, the rain just didn't bother us in St. Barts in the same way it does in the city. It rained on a couple of occasions and usually we just stuck it out because it came and went so quickly. Being so close to the water, though, our mats were getting too wet, so we eventually had to switch locations.

Eliza Huber wearing an orange Chanel shirt and sheer Tibi skirt.

After yoga, once the sun came out, I changed into a swimsuit for a day of working by the pool. I've owned this vintage Chanel shirt for about a year now and haven't figured out how to style it. I didn't really plan an outfit around it for this trip but knew that St. Barts was a good place to wear it, so I threw it in my suitcase at the last minute. It's made of a sporty material, so it was really lightweight and breathable on such a warm day. With it, I added one of my favorite floral Tory Burch string bikinis and a white sheer Tibi skirt that I ended up styling in tons of ways throughout this trip.

Outta Love Sunglasses

The whole reason I went to St. Barts was to celebrate the launch of the Brazilian footwear brand Larroudé's capsule collection for the Rosewood Le Guanahani (the same hotel group that owns The Carlyle in Manhattan). This is one of the pairs from the four-piece collection, which also included a purple pair of the same flats and two pairs of wedges, one in white and another in turquoise blue. The colors were chosen to mimic the hotel's 66 total colorful suites. Unlike most hotel boutiques, the one at Le Guanahani, where these shoes are all up for grabs, is heavily curated with resortwear staples like Guest in Residence knit sets, Tropic of C bikinis, and Matteau sundresses. Naturally, these seashell-embellished flats fit right in.

Madison Flat in Ivory Leather

This is the view of the infinity pool and the lagoon from the Beach Club, where the hotel's boutique and restaurant are located. We spent a lot of time down here (when we weren't on the actual beach) having lunch or just lounging in and out of the pool.

Eliza Huber wearing a red Prada dress with black Prada shoes and bag.

This was probably the look I was most excited to wear when I was invited on this trip with Larroudé and the Rosewood. It's from the time of my favorite-ever Prada runway collection, S/S 22, and I scored it at Woodbury Commons, an outlet mall in New Jersey. I tried on the skort version that was in the show at a different outlet during my summer trip to Italy, and for some reason, I didn't buy it, so finding this slightly more practical dress version felt meant to be. With it, I carried the only purse I packed for the trip, a Prada 1995 Re-Edition bag, and wore black Prada slingback wedges .

I wore the look to leave the resort and head to dinner in Gustavia at Bonito , a hillside restaurant with views of the entire island. It's owned by the same restaurant group that owns Betula in Aspen and is definitely one of the go-to restaurants to visit if you're ever on the island.

Fluid Back Knot Dress

After a quick workout in the hotel's gym the next morning, I headed to the spa for a 60-minute custom massage. It was a bit wet and rainy, but the sound of the rain ended up being a nice peaceful background for my appointment.

This was after my appointment, thus the messy, oily hairdo. I kept my outfit pretty casual for the spa, choosing a black halter top from Dissh and some new baggy jean shorts from Citizens of Humanity. Once I'd gotten dressed again, I sat for a good hour in a lounge chair in the spa, taking in the surroundings and snacking on coconut water and almonds.

I swear I took this same photo every single day that I was at the Rosewood. The flowers mixed with the aquamarine water and painted suites threw me for a loop whenever I saw it. This was the view as I left my room and walked down to the Beach Club.

Since it was still pretty hot out when we headed into Gustavia, the downtown area in St. Barts, I just threw on an oversize pink button-down shirt from Brooks Brothers and the same white, sheer skirt from Tibi that I wore to the pool a few days earlier. I wore this outfit during New York Fashion Week last September and loved how easy it was, taking the idea from Tibi's S/S 23 runway show to tuck in the tails of the shirt so that the skirt wasn't entirely see-through.

When we arrived, we stopped to get coffees at Bar de l'Oubli in town and then started roaming the streets, popping into Prada and Ralph Lauren, as well as the French pharmacy, where we loaded up on hard-to-find French products. An hour in the pharmacy later, we were late to get back to the hotel to prepare for dinner at La Petite Plage , a Mediterranean restaurant that turns into a beach club at the end of the night.

Cotton Button-Up Shirt

The next morning was by far the sunniest, best beach day of the entire trip, and none of us had anything to do until the evening but sit by the sea and relax. For the occasion, I wore my all-time favorite bikini from Kōraru. This was one of those perfect vacation days when you read an entire book—I read It Ends With Us by Colleen Hoover—and eat lunch from your lounge chair.

Next on the agenda was a sunset boat ride, where we had cocktails and bites to the sound of French house music and took endless photos on a digital camera that one of the other editors on the trip brought. I got this Zara Studio Collection dress after the spring line dropped a few weeks ago and have been searching for a good chance to wear it. And what better chance will I have than a yacht at sunset in St. Barts? It's really beautiful, with a dusty-pink jacquard skirt and a sheer organza overlay. I couldn't wear shoes on the boat, but I originally added my Prada slingbacks with it, as well as my 1995 bag.

Mixed Organza Dress Limited Edition

This was our last night in St. Barts, so after the boat ride, we headed to the hotel to quickly change for dinner. The theme of the dinner was Slim Aarons, so when I received this magenta shift dress from Liberowe in the mail just days before this trip, I knew it was perfect for the evening. I get the feeling that I'll be styling it in dozens of ways when I get home to the city, but for a beach dinner, I loved the way it looked worn completely on its own with just the Larroudé x Rosewood flat sandals.

We didn't have to leave the hotel until 1:30 p.m. the next day for our first flight, so we all decided that we'd spend as much time in the sun as physically possible before heading back to New York. For the first half of the day, I wore a Tibi scarf top with my favorite swim shorts from Galamaar for breakfast and lunch, and then whenever I was in the sun, I switched the top out with a brown Masarà bikini top.

Cream Galamaar swim shorts

I bought these mesh The Row flats on super sale at the end of 2023 and haven't had a chance to wear them given the winter weather in New York, so I was dying to pack them for this trip. I ended up wearing them a ton, and they were just as great as I expected them to be. I even wore them on both of my travel days.

How To Pack A Suitcase, According To A Seasoned Traveler

Learning how to pack a suitcase can make future trips seamless and stress-free. With plenty of helpful packing methods out there, it’s easy to maximize the limited space of your suitcase so that you can bring as much as possible, depending on your itinerary. The best way to pack a suitcase depends on the length of your trip and other factors, such as the season you’re traveling in and your travel style.

For cruises or a one-hotel trip where you won’t be changing accommodations often, you will only need to think about packing and repacking once. However, if you plan on changing hotels and cities often, you will be packing, unpacking and lugging your suitcase around throughout your trip, meaning you’ll need to have a plan in place. No matter your itinerary, we’ve outlined the best strategies to help you pack more strategically, as well as some essential items to make packing as easy as possible.

Best Mattress Sales: Save Up To 50% On An Editor-Approved Bed

The best travel cribs, no matter where your family is headed, what you will need to pack a suitcase:.

  • Best Suitcase: Away The Bigger Carry-On
  • Best Packing Cubes: Bagsmart Keep Shape Packing Cubes , Eagle Creek Pack-It Tube , JJ Power Travel Shoe Bag
  • Best Toiletry Kit: Travelon Compact Hanging Toiletry Kit
  • Best Tech Kit: ProCase Electronic Organizer
  • Best Cosmetics Bag: Eachy Cosmetic Bag
  • Best Jewelry Case: Bagsmart Travel Jewelry Organizer Case

Step 1: Consider The Type of Travel

Before you even open your suitcase, you should think about the kind of trip you’re going on and how much space essential items will take up. If you’re packing for a ski trip , you will need to bring heavier, snow-proof gear—but you can re-wear most of it. On a beach trip, your summer outfits will take up less space, but you will need more of them as you lather on sunscreen and deal with sand and sweat.

Whether you’re flying domestically or internationally also plays a role in how you pack. On a domestic trip, familiar products are easier to find and you don’t need to worry about packing adaptors to charge your electronics. When you’re flying internationally, there may be some necessities that will be difficult or impossible to find abroad.

Step 2: Decide On The Number of Items

After you’ve considered the essentials for the style of your trip, think about how long your trip will be. Short trips can be the easiest to pack for because you can get away with squeezing in a little bit more than you need, while longer trips of two weeks or more are not so bad if you count on doing laundry somewhere along the way. I’ve found that I’m more likely to overpack on a week-long trip when I don’t think I will have a chance to do laundry and want to be prepared for a few different weather scenarios.

Start with this basic breakdown of how many of each item you should aim to pack depending on how long you’ll be traveling for—with optional items included if you’re traveling somewhere you expect to swim. If you plan on hitting the hotel gym or going for a jog or a bike ride, you should also bring along one outfit for working out and a pair of sneakers.

Weekend Trip

For a weekend trip, you really only need three outfits, or four if it’s a three-day weekend. This includes one nice outfit for going out to dinner, but it does not include what you’ll wear on the way to your destination.

  • 1-2 bottoms
  • 1 dress (optional)
  • 1 pajama set
  • 1 swimsuit (optional)
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 3 pairs of underwear
  • 1 pair of comfortable shoes
  • 1 pair of “going-out” shoes (optional)
  • Toiletry bag with essentials (toothpaste, sunscreen, makeup, etc.)
  • Chargers and electronics

On a seven-day trip, you will need to pack clothes that can easily be mixed and matched, while prioritizing items that you can use multiple times, like jackets, jeans and sweaters that can handle multiple wears between washes. Always pack extra underwear and socks on a longer trip, especially if you’re doing a lot of physical activity.

  • 2-3 bottoms
  • 1-2 dresses (optional)
  • 1-2 swimsuits (optional)
  • 8 pairs of socks
  • 8 pairs of underwear
  • 1 pair of comfortable close-toed walking shoes
  • 1 pair of sandals or flip-flops (optional)

Two-Week Trip Or Longer

If you’re traveling for two weeks or longer, you should plan to do laundry at some point during your trip so you can pack less and have a fresh start somewhere in the middle of your travels. However, things don’t always go according to plan, so you should still pack more than one week’s worth of clothes just in case.

  • 3-4 bottoms
  • 2-3 dresses (optional)
  • 8-14 pairs of socks
  • 8-14 pairs of underwear

Step 3: Choose The Packing Methods And Products To Help You Pack

If you are flying carry-on only, all of your liquids must be in containers no larger than 3.4 ounces and fit in a clear quart-sized bag. If you check your luggage you can bring toiletries that go over this size limit, but you should still pack, wrap and secure them tightly in plastic bags so that if they they leak during transit, the rest of your items will not be ruined.

To keep your toiletries organized throughout your trip, you’ll need a hanging bag like the Travelon Compact Hanging Toiletry Kit . This particular bag is a great choice as it allows you to see everything laid out just how you left it and it’s quick to pack up. However, if you need more space for a large makeup collection, check out the super spacious and customizable Eachy Cosmetic Bag .

Dress Shirts

To minimize wrinkles in your best shirts, use the narrow fold method. Button up the shirt and lie it flat with the buttons facing down. Fold the sleeves across the back of the shirt and then up at a 90-degree angle until the cuffs line up with the collar. Fold the sides to overlap on top of the sleeves, and fold the fest of the shirt up from the bottom until you have a neat square package. You may still have to iron out the folds when you arrive.

To protect your shoes while traveling, pack them in a separate waterproof bag and fill any empty space with socks or other small soft items that will give them extra protection and help them keep their shape. You can use a plastic bag if you’re in a pinch, but these waterproof shoe bags are specifically designed to hold their shape and have an extra pocket to fit a pair of flip flops.

Packing Cubes

These essential travel tools make a world of difference when it comes to keeping your suitcase organized, but most people use them wrong. Your first instinct might tell you to put pants with pants and shirts with shirts, but the most effective way I’ve found to use packing cubes—especially on a trip with multiple transfers— is to group clothing by activity.

Keep your day-to-day sightseeing clothes in a separate cube from your going-out-for-dinner clothes or beach-gear cube. When it’s time to get dressed, you’ll have your outfit pre-planned and I also find that it’s also a good way to store accessories. For example, I always bring my favorite microfiber beach towel with me, so I keep this in a separate cube with my swimsuits, a beach dress and a sun hat. When I’m not looking for my beach clothes, it doesn’t get in the way and it doesn’t get lost.

I prefer cubes with some shape, like these BagSmart packing cubes , but I also like to mix it up. I’ve found that the Eagle Creek Pack-It Tube is the best shape for storing my rolled socks and underwear, which I always keep in my carry-on in case my luggage gets lost.

If you love to accessorize, you’ll need a system to prevent your favorite jewelry from getting left behind in random hotel rooms. Instead of bringing along a hard-sided jewelry box which could tangle your necklaces as they get jostled around, try a folding jewelry organizer like this case from BagSmart , available in three sizes.

Electronics

In addition to a good case for your laptop or tablet, you should also have a separate organizer case for all your wires, chargers, portable batteries, and hard drives. If you’re bringing a lot of electronics, protect them with a hard-sided case like this ProCase Electronic Organizer , which has multiple compartments and partitions to keep your gear tangle-free.

Is It Better To Roll Or Fold Clothes In A Suitcase?

If your goal is to fit as much as possible into your suitcase, rolling is the way to go. However, if you need your clothes ready to go as soon as you land and won’t have time for ironing, folding is preferable. The best strategy is to do a bit of both, rolling items like underwear and pajamas, but folding nice shirts and dresses.

What Is The 5 4 3 2 1 Packing Method?

The 5 4 3 2 1 packing method maximizes potential outfit combinations so you can express your personal style. It works by assigning a number to each category of clothing: 5 tops, 4 bottoms, 3 shoes, 2 dresses, and 1 bag. It’s a good jumping-off point, but you may need to adjust the numbers for longer or shorter trips.

The best vacuum storage bags make the most of your space by removing the air inside and sealing it tight. Many use a vacuum or hand pump to suck out all the air, while some travel-friendly space bags can actually be hand-pressed shut. Because of this, they're great for packing out-of-season clothes, bedding and more into small spaces like under your bed or inside your suitcase .

After consulting our in-house experts and scouring online reviews, we've rounded up the best vacuum storage bags to shop on Amazon, starting at just $8 (with fast, free shipping to boot!).

Skip the checked luggage line at the airport with these travel-friendly storage bags. Forté named the Ziploc Space Bag a long-standing Lab favorite. There's no need for a pump or a vacuum to take the air out — simply fill each with up to five pounds of clothing or bedding, seal it with the Ziploc slider and fold to press out the air. It also costs under $10 for a pack of two.

Since they don't require any bulky equipment, these bags are a great option for users on the go. The brand claims the bags reduce the volume of clothing and bedding by up to 75%. They're also waterproof and airtight per the brand, meaning they should help protect your items from damage caused by travel and storage.

Stow bulky bedding, sweaters, pillows and more with these space-saving storage bags. You can either use the included hand pump or a standard vacuum cleaner to compress each bag and reduce volume by up to 80%, according to the brand. For under $20, this pack comes with four bag sizes to store different items: the smallest size fits six to eight sweaters while the largest fits a queen-sized bedding set.

The triple-sealed valve is designed to keep bags airtight so your items stay condensed, and the double-layered material is designed to be puncture- and scratch-resistant, making it more durable against damage. "They're strong and sturdy," one Amazon reviewer said . "They have great sizes and storage space, and they hold the seal (some for a year now)."

Boasting more than 38,000 five-star reviews and counting, Amazon's #1 best-selling space saver bags claim to shrink the size of your items by up to 80%. This variety pack includes 20 bags, making them great for anyone moving houses or with lots of vacuum storage needs. The pack includes standard vacuum-sealable bags as well as travel bags that can be rolled to press out air — no pump required.

Waterproof and reusable (purported by the brand), the bags' valves and seals are designed to prevent expansion and keep moisture and debris out. "The quality of these bags is outstanding," one online shopper wrote . "I feel confident storing my clothing, bedding and other textiles knowing they are safe and well-preserved."

Whether you need to increase your under-bed storage space or condense your clothes on the go, this pack offers the most variety with six different-sized bags for all your needs . The standard bags range from pouch-sized bags for lingerie and T-shirts to extra-large bags for bedding sets and pillows . Each waterproof bag has a handy line to show you where to stop filling them, making it more intuitive to pack than other options on our list.

While it can be sealed with the included hand pump or a vacuum, we love that the travel bags can be rolled to seal out excess air sans tool if needed. "These were a game changer during our move," an Amazon reviewer wrote . "The sizes vary drastically, accommodating many different types of items from quilts to pillows as well as clothes."

The original Spacesaver vacuum storage bags are our top pick for heavy-duty storage needs where damage protection is imperative, like cross-country moves and travel. You can use either the included hand pump or your vacuum to reduce volume by up to 80%, according to the brand. Choose from small to jumbo sizes and variety packs for all your storage needs.

Reviewers appreciate its ease of use and sturdy plastic . "I'm moving all the way across the country and was stressed out wondering how much of my clothing I could actually take with me. These Space Saver bags are a life saver!" wrote one five-star reviewer . "They are so easy to pack, zip and vacuum out the air. One of my best purchases ever here on Amazon (and I've made thousands)."

Hefty is known for its durable garbage bags and freezer bags, but the brand also has a line of high-rated vacuum storage bags. Including three large and three extra-large sizes, Hefty's Shrink-Pak bags claim to be waterproof and reusable season after season, so you don't have to worry about moisture, dust or bugs ruining your items. Plus, you can simply press the air out with your hands and seal.

We love how the extra large bags have a zipper on the long side rather than the shorter top, making it easier to pack bedding supplies like pillows and comforters. Shoppers agreed, with one writing : "We just went through a very long, drawn-out move and the shrink bags have been a true lifesaver! We were able to put lots of our clothes, towels and blankets in storage while we shopped for a new house. When we finally started unpacking, everything looked exactly the way it did when it was packed!"

More than 60,000 five-star reviewers endorse these space-saving bags from Amazon Basics. Even if you don't have a vacuum with compatible attachments to compress the bags, reviewers noted that the included hand pump works effectively — making it a great option for travel.

Available in sizes medium through jumbo and counts of four through 20, they store everything from T-shirts and sweaters to comforters and bed sheets. "This is ridiculously easy to use and fits so much!" one shopper said . "I have fit two king-sized comforters into one large bag with no issue."

Outfitted with a stylish plaid print, we wouldn't mind keeping these space bags out in plain sight. And it's not just for aesthetics. Their unique woven texture provides a bit of grip to their exterior, helping them to stay in place better while stacked. The bags come in four sizes and packs of six to 26, making them great for small organization projects and large undertakings.

Plus, they compress with a vacuum or its included pump. Reviewers appreciate the variety of sizes and ease of use, too. "I love these sealable storage bags!" one shopper wrote . "The quality is fantastic, very well-made and sturdy. I really like the assortment of colors and sizes, too, so much so that I ordered a second box!"

If you need to store cumbersome items like king-sized duvets, foam cushions or dog beds , Vacwel's XXL bags offer an impressive storage capacity of 47 by 35 inches . Featuring a nylon lining for extra durability, the brand claims these bags are waterproof and protect against dirt, bugs and dust. They even come with sticker labels to easily identify stored items.

"These bags are durable and got the job done," an Amazon shopper added . "I was able to vacuum seal large comforters and sheets! Very surprised at how many bedding items that I was able to put in the bags." Note that a pump is not included, so you'll need a vacuum handy to seal these bags.

Protect your out-of-season garments and make room for new pieces with these clever hanging storage bags on Amazon. You can stash up to five pieces of clothing inside each, including coats, jackets and suits . Just place one included hanger on each rotating ring, zip it up and vacuum all the air out. The vertical storage design keeps your clothes clean and organized until you're ready to wear them again.

"I get immense joy out of packing away my winter clothes in the Taili hanging bags," an Amazon reviewer said . "[It] shrink wraps everything into compact boards ... It was very easy and effective to use."

How we chose the best vacuum storage bags

listicle linebreak

With so many different options on the market, it can be difficult to determine which vacuum storage bags are worth buying. To help you find the right pick for your needs, we consulted our experts in the GH Institute Cleaning Lab and vetted customer reviews to bring you a range of vacuum storage bags that suit a variety of purposes.

How do you choose the best vacuum storage bags?

Choosing the best vacuum storage bags depends on your individual needs — do you just need to store a few seasonal sweaters, or pack up your whole house for a move? According to, the size and dimensions can help you figure out which options are right for you.

" They should be large enough to hold multiple items and be durable enough to use from year to year ," Forté says. Also consider whether your vacuum has the right attachment to pair with the bag — otherwise, opt for a bag that can be rolled to compress or can be hand pumped.

What do you put in a space bag?

listicle linebreak

While you might want to use your vacuum storage bag to compress bulky items like winter coats and duvets, Forté warns against vacuum-sealing down-filled items . Instead, she recommends only compressing them halfway.

"Otherwise, you risk crushing and breaking the down feathers and they may then not be as lofty or insulate as well," Forté says. Additionally, be sure not to store wet items, or you risk creating mold and causing long-term damage.

How long can you store items in a vacuum storage bag?

listicle linebreak

Forté recommends using storage bags for short-term and seasonal storage . "Keep items in them too long, and you risk permanently setting creases or crushing and flattening items that are supposed to be lofty and puffy," Forte says. For best results, be sure to check the recommended storage time on your bag's instructions.

Travel + Leisure / Reese Herrington

Western wear, cowboy aesthetic, country couture — whatever you'd like to call it — has taken the fashion world by storm, but it's not just a mere passing trend. As a New York City-based travel writer , it's hard to go a block without seeing studded belts and vintage washed jeans , and the trend has spread far beyond Manhattan; I've even spotted it on recent trips up and down the East Coast. Though its resurgence in pop culture features new spins on the traditional fashion genre, Western wear obviously has roots dating back centuries, but there's something about the classic look that will forever exude cool. With celebrities like Beyoncé and Bella Hadid showcasing the best of the Americana lifestyle, this latest resurgence is beckoning everyone (including myself) to give their travel clothes a refresh.

Beyond looking sharp, the Western wear trend embraces easy-wearing, high-quality basics inspired by country living, making it a must-have for your travel wardrobe. It prioritizes timeless pieces like maxi denim skirts and cowboy boots that can be worn and reworn in a plethora of ways to maximize your travel outfit possibilities. These pieces are typically denim-, cotton-, leather, and suede-heavy, making them the ideal transitional garments that can be worn throughout spring (and some of our favorite finds can even be rocked in the summer).

Don’t know where to start transforming your wardrobe to embrace a Western aesthetic? I’ve curated a selection of pieces that I’m absolutely loving this season that will look great anywhere, be it a serene getaway in Wyoming , an exciting rodeo, or even to a "Cowboy Carter" listening party.

Tecovas The Annie Cowgirl Boots

Cowgirl and cowboy boots are undoubtedly one of the most prominent items emerging from the Americana fashion movement, and if you’re looking to embrace this shoe trend, then you should do so with the best: a pair of Tecovas . The Austin-based brand prioritizes authentic craftsmanship to make its top-quality, already-worn-in-comfy boots that are made to last. I’m utterly obsessed with this Annie style, the brand’s best-selling cowgirl boot, and am eager to add them to my collection because I know that they’ll be my comfortable go-to pair of boots that’ll last me years to come. Plus, they'll look equally wonderful with a pair of jeans as they would with a flowy dress.

If you’re looking for a more affordable option to achieve the same look, consider shopping the Soda Reno Women's Cowboy Boots that boast a $50 price tag at Amazon.

Madewell The Santiago Western Ankle Boots

Not quite ready for full-on cowboy boots? Or, maybe you're headed somewhere warm. Either way, if you want to dip your toes into the style, these Madewell ankle booties are the perfect way to start. Beyond their alluring 82 percent discount (thanks to an on-site double deal — just use the code SPRING30 to unlock an extra 30 percent off at checkout), they’re absolutely adorable. Country styles embrace shiny hardware and durable materials like suede, as seen on these boots, which’ll elevate any look that you have planned. And, because they’re crafted with elastic and a low block heel, they go on-and-off seamlessly and will be easy to walk in. Hurry, they're selling out.

J.Crew Maxi Denim Skirt

Maxi denim skirts, and denim in general, are totally country-approved thanks to their utility style that is a bit more polished and put together than a mini skirt. I’m all in for embracing more maxi denim skirts into my wardrobe. They can be styled with T-shirts, blouses, vests, and more, making them a welcomed, versatile staple in your suitcase. In fact, denim skirts are among the first garments that I look for when preparing for a trip, because of the way that they can seamlessly elevate any look. If you want to test the waters on this trend, do so with this stunning, on-sale skirt from J.Crew while it’s 46 percent off.

Wrangler Women’s Cowboy Cut Jeans

Wrangler is among the original cowboy couture brands, selling high-quality denim that parallels the rise of country since the 1940s. Needless to say, you can’t go wrong with anything from the cowboy fashion pioneer to adapt your wardrobe to Western style, but I recommend starting with these Cowboy Cut jeans. They effortlessly blend classic aesthetics with contemporary details for unmatched comfort. Crafted with 98 percent denim and 2 percent spandex, these jeans exude vintage charm with the modern ingenuity of a comfortable pair of travel pants. And at just $50, they’re the perfect garment to wear on your spring adventures.

Amour Vert Violette Organic Cotton Eyelet Dress

Amour Vert

Flowy, flirty dresses add a feminine touch to an otherwise rather masculine trend. And this prairie-style dress not only embodies the essence of country living, but it also serves as the ideal white sundress for the vibrant seasons of spring and summer. Crafted with 100 percent cotton, adorned with delicate details, and featuring a fashion-forward corseted bust, this dress is a timeless and breathtaking addition to your wardrobe. And to complete the look, I recommend pairing with a pair of cowboy boots — duh!

Sézane Women’s Amerie Shirt

This Western-style embroidered chambray snap shirt is an incredibly versatile choice that radiates versatility. With its long-sleeve design, this shirt offers year-round comfort while shielding you from the elements (without causing overheating). It’s also a stunning option to add to your collection of Americana-inspired garments, inviting endless styling options, whether paired with a denim skirt, jeans, or classic boots.

Unfortunately, this stunning top is about to sell out. If you have your heart set on the look, check out the newly dropped Grosy Women's Embroidered Plain Tunic Shirt for $40 at Amazon.

Free People Wilder Embellished Sling Bag

Free People

Conchos are the focal points of any Western look. Instead of wearing the classic disc around your waist, you can sport it on your travel bag. Here, the historically rich accessory decorates the belt bag's strap to add that cowboy flair to any outfit. It also offers the spacious, hands-free functionality of a great belt bag; wear it as a crossbody, off the shoulder, or as a belt bag, and will confidently safeguard all of your items as you explore new destinations this year.

Wrangler Western Shoulder Bag

For a larger option, this adjustable shoulder bag is winning over shoppers for boasting the " perfect size " and a " sturdy feel that feels well-made ." That also happens to be the ethos of Western fashion, prioritizing items that both look and feel good — just check out that stunning embroidery! And starting at just $52 and available in an impressive 50 different colors and prints, the Montana-styled bag is just waiting to be added to your cart.

Mavi Venus Denim Vest

Denim is widely recognized as a premium and long-lasting fabric, making it an ideal choice for outdoor activities and country living. Western wear is known for its practicality, and as such, many denim styles are adorned with functional pockets and comfortable cuts that are perfect for all-day wear. Take this stunning denim vest from Mavi, which features front pockets and a straight fit that can be styled in various ways (and will look great in each of them). Whether you choose to store your lip balm in one of the frockets (front pockets) or utilize them for your ID and cards, you will never regret adding this versatile top to your collection.

Quince Women’s Suede Trucker Jacket

It would be wrong to share a list of high-quality Western wear to add to your travel wardrobe without including a buttery soft suede jacket, and this one from Quince is just what your transitional wardrobe needs right now. It’s warm enough to wear as the temperatures continue to dip and rise, but remains lightweight and soft for hot days ahead. And since the trademark of this style is practicality, you can bet that this jacket is equipped with a few functional pockets to hold onto some of your small belongings.

Livingston Straw Cowboy Hat

Saddle up travelers! To bring your entire Western ensemble together, you need a cowboy hat. This iconic accessory not only exudes a relaxed and cool vibe, but it also serves a practical purpose. Originally designed to protect cowboys from the scorching sun while working outdoors, these hats have now become a versatile (and useful) fashion statement. This utility also lends them as the perfect accessory to shield your face from the sun at the beach, festivals, and beyond.

This lightweight hat can also travel like a dream with the help of a convenient hat clip . Plus, it gives your outfit more style points than any old baseball cap or sun visor would.

Steve Madden Women’s Recent Gladiator Sandals

Modern takes on Western wear draw inspiration from classic country accessories like the studded (and classic) concho belt — which are on full display in these Steve Madden sandals. I personally love a strappy gladiator for travel, as I find that they have more support and grip compared to other styles on the market. This pair caught my eye for its stunning look that I know would be a standout at any festival or vacation that I have planned this season.

Superdown Robyn Strappy Back Top

Plenty of these styles possess a classic and timeless appeal due to their simple yet classy look. However, the recent revival of this style has inspired retailers to think outside of the box and explore incorporating Americana prints, like cowhide, to give a fresh twist to this country craze. For instance, try out this stylish cow print top from Superdown, which will surely make a statement at any music festival or evening event that you have on the schedule.

Werforu Leather Belt

A true Western-inspired outfit is never truly complete without a concho belt. This $15 one from Amazon is embellished with beautifully etched hardware that’ll effortlessly pull together any look, while remaining understated enough to not cause too much attention. Style it with a pair of vintage wash jeans or wear it with a dress to give yourself some extra waist-cinching magic.
