Question: I want to renew my passport but the exact date of departure and my length of trip are uncertain at this point. I don't understand why a document entitling me to travel abroad for 10 years requires details about a particular trip, since it may be the first of many I will take using this passport. Please explain. Answer: You are not required to provide travel plans in order to apply for a passport unless you plan to expedite the process. Applicants who request expedited services are required to prove the need for emergency expediting. Interestingly, this used to not be the case. An article in the June 11, 1957 issue of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette stated, "You may not ask for a passport just in order to keep it on hand, if you have no travel plans." The U.S. government now realizes that emergencies and unexpected opportunities for travel abroad arise that require U.S. citizens to possess valid passports. A U.S. passport is your ticket to travel around the world. But you may not be familiar with what passports are, how they work, or how to get one if you haven’t traveled internationally or traveled to Canada or Mexico before passports were required.

Getting a U.S. passport for the first time can be quite easy and only takes a couple of hours of work and a quick photo of yourself. But you must know what’s necessary to complete and where to submit your paperwork.

To be eligible for a U.S. passport, you must be either a U.S. citizen by birth or naturalization or be a qualifying U.S. national.

Depending on which category you fall under, you must provide different evidence of your eligibility.

If you are  born abroad to parents who are U.S. citizens , your parents must fill out the CRBA form ( DS-2029 ) and submit it to the nearest U.S. embassy in order to secure your citizenship.

This process is extremely important to prevent issues in obtaining citizenship. It is best to simultaneously apply for a passport so there are no issues getting back into the U.S.

Applying for a U.S. passport is not difficult. To apply for a U.S. passport, you’ll need to complete the following steps:

Step 1: Fill Out the Official Application

The official application for a U.S. passport is the U.S. Department of State form DS-11 . It’s quite easy to fill out.

When completing the passport form, pay close attention to the different fields and do not make handwritten adjustments to the form after printing (with the exception of your signature).

You have a few options to select when applying for a passport document:

*Travel with a passport is restricted by visa requirements of the countries you are traveling to.

The passport book is a little more expensive, but there aren’t any restrictions. However, the card is very convenient when traveling to those select countries.

The passport book comes with either the standard 28 pages or the extended 52 pages. If you plan to travel a lot, get the 52-page passport, as the price is the same.

The 28-page passport is plenty for most people, given you’ll likely need to renew before filling it up. However, if you need more pages, the U.S. government will send you a new passport versus adding pages to your current one.

To get a copy of the required application form, you can print it from home or locally. You can also pick up the application where you will submit your application.

If you plan to pick up the application and submit it all in 1 trip, ensure you have completed all the other steps first.

Step 2: Proof of Citizenship or Naturalization

While there are minimum passport requirements stated, sometimes they may ask you for more than 1 piece of information to prove your citizenship .

It’s better to be prepared, so try to bring as much information as possible!

Here is where knowing your eligibility status is important. Different evidence is required for those (1) born in the U.S. (citizens), (2) born outside the U.S. (citizens), (3) born outside the U.S. (naturalized), and (4) born outside the U.S. (adopted).

For U.S. citizens born in the U.S. o r U.S. nationals , you simply need to submit a certified birth certificate.

Make sure it is not a copy of your birth certificate. If your certificate was not filed for over a year after your birth, or you do not have one, you must also submit a combination of the following:

• A hospital birth record
• An early baptismal or circumcision certificate
• Early census, school, medical, or family bible records
• Insurance files or published birth announcements (such as a newspaper article)
• Notarized affidavits or  DS-10  (birth affidavit) of older blood relatives having knowledge of your birth in  addition  to some of the above

All the evidence must be official and signed with all the appropriate information about you.

For U.S. citizens born outside the U.S. , you will need to submit the following:

• Your foreign birth certificate listing your parent(s)
• Your parent(s)’ evidence of U.S. citizenship
• Your parents’ marriage certificate, if applicable
• A statement from your U.S. citizen parent(s) detailing all periods and places of their residence or physical presence in the U.S. and abroad (even before your birth)

For those born outside the U.S. and naturalized , submit your Certificate of Naturalization or Certificate of Citizenship.

For those born outside the U.S. and who claim citizenship through the naturalization of their parents , you must submit a few things:

• Your parent(s)’ naturalization certificate
• Permanent Resident Card/Green Card
• Foreign passport with the original I-551 visa entry stamp
• Your parents’ marriage certificate (if your parents were married when you legally entered the U.S. and before your 18th birthday)
• Documentation of legal custody (if your parents were not married when you legally entered the U.S.)
• Your parents’ marriage certificate dated after your birth
• Certified court order of legitimation

For those born outside the U.S. and adopted  while under the age of 16, you will need to provide the following document:

• Evidence of your permanent residence status
• Evidence of your full and final adoption
• Evidence that you were in the legal and physical custody of your U.S. citizen parent(s)
• Evidence you have resided in the U.S.

While this may seem like a lot, make sure to bring any  other official documentation that you feel might be relevant, whether you are a U.S. citizen born in the U.S. or abroad.

The U.S. Department of State website lists the accepted secondary evidence. Note: Social Security cards are not considered evidence.

Step 3: Submit Identification

The proof of identification is a bit easier and less daunting than the proof of citizenship. The proof of identity must have a good photo of you with your signature.

It has to be a permanent form of identification (not a temporary card) and an official U.S. government-issued form of identification. Examples include:

• Permanent driver’s license
• Military identification
• Expired passport book/card
• Certificate of naturalization or citizenship

Step 4: Submit Photocopied Evidence

While you will need to have all official documentation when you submit your application, you will also need photocopies of each document so there is a copy of your documentation submitted with your application.

Before you submit your application, photocopy all primary and secondary evidence you will bring in. Then you can provide whatever they ask for. Make copies of each piece of evidence separately.

The photocopies must be of the front and back of each piece of evidence, on 8.5 x 11-inch white paper, printed in black and white, and on 1 side of the paper.

Finally, you must not reduce the size of any images copied, but you can enlarge them if you choose.

Step 5: Provide a Picture: Passport Photo Requirements

Perhaps the one thing that is most overlooked is the passport photo. While some facilities provide photo-taking services, it is easiest to do this ahead of time.

Per application requirements, you only need to provide 1 photo. The photo has to be a high-quality color photo of you, taken within the last 6 months, taken in front of a white or off-white background, and be 2 x 2 inches in size.

You will need to wear regular street clothes and not wear any headdress or glasses unless worn for religious reasons and documented as such.

Since more  passport photo requirements  exist, it is easiest to simply get the photo taken at a facility that provides a passport photo service. Typical places to take these include big pharmacies, department stores, government offices, and more. If you’d prefer to do it yourself, follow these guidelines for taking your passport photo at home.

The photos cost around $6 to $20 and are in addition to your passport application fee. Bring the photos to the application facility, but they don’t have to be attached to the application.

Step 6: Pay the Passport Application Fee

The U.S. passport fees are stated on the U.S. Department of State website .

Please note that these fees are in addition to the cost of the photos and any additional fees in getting the proper evidence together.

Depending on where you submit your application, you can pay the passport fee with cash, check, or credit card. You can even use money orders.

Make checks or money orders payable to the “U.S. Department of State” and ensure you have the exact amount if you want to pay with cash.

If you want to expedite your passport, you can do so for an additional $60 fee. An overnight delivery service can be obtained for $19.53, which will overnight your passport from the date it is approved.

Many places can process passport applications. The U.S. Department of State website has the full list of qualified places . There is likely a passport office somewhere near you.

You must apply in person for your first U.S. passport application, hence why the above information is so important.

If your application is not urgent, it is easiest to apply at a general Passport Acceptance Facility. The wizard at that link can search for places near you, including places that also offer photo services.

The United States Postal Service (USPS) offices also allow you to submit applications . Click the link to search around for the office nearest you.

For those traveling within 2 weeks or who need a foreign visa within 4 weeks, then you’ll need to visit a passport agency . These are, unfortunately, few and far between and may be nowhere near where you’re located. You’ll also have to time the appointment right, as your appointment must be within 14 days of the expected travel.

26 U.S. Passport Agency Locations

If you can’t make it to a passport agency and still need it expedited or just wish to have someone else help you expedite the process, you can also use a private passport expediter like Swift Passport and Visa Services .

The time it takes to receive your passport depends on whether or not you expedite it, where you submit it, and what the workload is currently at the passport offices.

The standard processing time is approximately 10 to 13 weeks . An expedited order is supposed to arrive within 7 to 9 weeks , but could also take longer.

If you enter a passport agency, the expected turnaround time is 3 days. However, international travel must be booked within 72 hours of your appointment.

Be sure to check your online passport status occasionally if you don’t need it immediately. You’ll look up your application using your last name, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of your Social Security number.

If you’re getting your passport expedited, the online status tool likely won’t work for at least a week.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to further expedite it. As a government process, you can expect it to take a little longer than normal and have minimal customer service. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you apply for your passport well in advance of any upcoming trip!

The U.S. Department of State’s application wizard  is a useful tool to get you through the passport application process. It’s not an official application, but it will help you figure out what you need.

There are a few special cases for first-time passport applications: minors under the age of 16, minors ages 16 or 17, and people applying from outside the U.S.

Passport Processing for Minors Under 16

If you’re under 16 years of age or submitting an application for a minor under the age of 16, there are additional pieces of evidence that must be submitted with the application. The application must also be done in person.

When submitting the DS-11 application for a minor under 16, you must submit proof of citizenship along with a parent’s proof of relationship. At least 1 parent must also provide identifying documentation at the acceptance center.

The parental relationship can be documented on the child’s birth certificate, which can double as the proof of citizenship. Photo identification can be covered with the parent’s or the child’s ID (if they have one).

Parental consent must be given to those under the age of 16 and they cannot apply alone. Both parents or guardians must be present and consent, if available. If a parent can’t be present, the other must bring an affidavit granting permission to give the child a passport. If there is only 1 guardian, then proof can be provided by presenting a proper court order or death certificate.

The passport fee for a minor is slightly lower at $100 for a book, $15 for a card, and $115 for both, in addition to the standard $35 processing fee . Note that the passport will only be good for 5 years instead of the standard 10.

Passport Processing for Minors Ages 16 and 17

Although still considered a minor, a  16-year-old or 17-year-old child may apply for a passport on their own, as long as they have the appropriate documentation, including their own ID.

The child must present a completed DS-11 application or renew online with DS-82. If the child does not yet have their own identification, then a parent must be present with ID to identify them. Both parents do not need to be present if the child is 16 or 17.

It is suggested that at least 1 parent is present to show parental awareness. Another way to show parental awareness is to provide a signed written consent letter for the child with a copy of the parent’s photo ID.

Standard adult fees apply for a child of age 16 or 17. Passports for applicants 16 and older are valid for 10 years.

Please note that a child may be denied the ability to obtain a passport if one of the parents has submitted a letter stating they object to the child receiving a passport.

Passport Application Process for a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National Located Outside the U.S.

If you are trying to apply for a U.S. passport, and you are located outside of the U.S. and are a U.S. citizen or national, the process is very similar to applying from within the U.S. However, you must apply through the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate .

Similar to the process above, you’ll need to complete the DS-11 application and collect all relevant documentation to bring with you. Passport photos have different requirements depending on which country you are located in, so be sure to follow the U.S. passport photo requirements .

The passport fees are the same, but you must use cash in either U.S. dollars or the local currency that will be converted. You cannot use any other forms of payment.

You cannot apply for an expedited passport from outside the U.S. However, the embassy or agency can issue a limited-validity passport to service your emergency if you are applying for a passport.

Congratulations! You’ve got your passport. The next step is to understand how it works, and that enters into the world of visas (not to be confused with the credit card processor of the same name).

This year is on track to set a record for the highest demand for passports, according to the U.S. State Department. From October 2022 to September 2023, the State Department issued more than 24 million passport books and cards, the most ever. Passport processing delays were lengthy as a result. Now the State Department said processing times are at pre-pandemic levels. 

Amid all the confusion around getting a passport, here are some tips to guide you through the ins and outs of the process.

How   should   you   renew   a   passport?

To renew, mail the  application  and supporting documents (your most recent passport, a photo and passport fees) through the U.S. Postal Service. Make sure you’re  eligible to renew  before you mail in your application.

How long does it take to get and renew a passport?

As of Dec. 18, the State Department reports that  processing time  for routine applications takes six to eight weeks, down from seven to 10 weeks, for new passports and  passport renewals .

Mailing can add up to two weeks for the application to arrive at a passport agency or center and up to two weeks for you to receive your passport.

Expediting a passport

How can you expedite a new passport or renewal.

You can upgrade your passport application from routine to three categories:  expedited , urgent travel or emergency for an additional $60 (on top of the application fee of $130 for a new or renewed passport plus the execution fee of $35 for a new one).

You can also add one- to two-day delivery for $19.53.

• Expedited:  Choose this  service  if you’re traveling in less than 10 weeks from the date you submit your application. Processing takes two to three weeks, down from three to five weeks (not including mailing time). You can expedite a renewal by mail or a new passport at an acceptance facility such as a post office, clerk of court, public library or other local government office that accepts passport applications. 
• Urgent travel:  Choose this  service  if you are traveling within the expedited service time of two to three weeks. Call 877-487-2778 to make an appointment at a  passport agency or center  within 14 calendar days of your travel date if you have not already applied or within five calendar days if you have already applied (appointments are accepted only by phone). Note: Passport agencies and centers are operated by the State Department and are different from passport acceptance facilities. Appointments are limited and cannot be guaranteed.
• Emergency:  Choose this  service  if you have a life-or-death emergency that requires travel within three business days. Call 877-487-2778 or 202-647-4000, depending on the day and time, to make an appointment at a passport agency or center and provide proof of the qualifying emergency and proof of travel.

Another option is to use a private passport expediter or courier service. Some of these companies are registered with State Department passport agencies and are allowed to submit expedited passport applications on behalf of customers.  Check the website  for language that says “Authorized/Registered by State Department.”

These companies may charge several hundred dollars for expediting services, or charge for services that are offered for free by the State Department, such as making an appointment and filling out a form. Buyer beware: The State Department may not be able to honor appointments booked via third parties, according to a department spokesperson. 

Passport types and options

What is an electronic passport.

An electronic or  e-Passport  contains an electronic chip with the same information that is printed on the passport’s ID page. It provides protection against identity theft and makes it difficult to use an altered or forged passport.

All U.S. passports issued from 2006 to 2022 were e-Passports, distinguished by the international e-Passport symbol on the front cover. Since then, new passports are Next Generation Passports, redesigned to be safer and smarter with enhanced security features, according to a State Department spokesperson.

When should you get a “backup” passport?

A  second passport  is useful in a number of situations. For example, if you plan to visit two foreign destinations within a tight time frame and need visas for both.

There may not be enough time to wait for the first visa to be added to your passport before you need to submit your passport to apply for the second visa.

Travel writer and former  Travel + Leisure  international editor Mark Orwoll discovered this the hard way when he was planning back-to-back trips to countries that both required visas.

When he found out he could get a second passport, he had to pay an expediting service $649 (in addition to the State Department’s $60 expedite fee) to rush it and to facilitate both visas so he could get them on time. “I hated to spend so much money, but the expediter got it for me in a matter of days,” Orwoll says. “Because I travel so much overseas, I decided it was worth it. And besides, it’s pretty cool to have two passports!”

Another reason to have two passports is if a foreign country denies you a visa or entry because your passport has stamps showing travel to certain countries. For example, an Israeli entry or exit stamp will prevent you from entering some Arab countries, such as Kuwait, Lebanon and others. Two passports will allow you to divide your entry stamps.

The second passport will be valid for four years or less, instead of 10 for the original one. You must meet several additional requirements to get it.

Can you add visa pages to a passport?

No. If you need additional visa pages in your passport, you must renew it. If you travel overseas frequently and anticipate needing extra visa pages, apply for a “large book,” which provides 24 extra blank pages for stamps and visas at no extra charge.

Should you keep a photocopy of your passport when you travel?

Yes. Losing your passport on an international trip can be very disrupting. To facilitate getting a replacement, keep a photo of your passport ID page on your cellphone or bring a photocopy with you and store it in a separate place from your passport so you have a record if your passport is lost or stolen, says Kevin Coffey, author of  Traveler Beware! An Undercover Cop’s Guide to Avoiding: Pickpockets, Luggage Theft, & Travel Scams . To get a  replacement , bring your copy to the nearest embassy or consulate, complete a loss report and an application form, show an additional government ID and supply one recent passport photo.

What is a passport card, and where can you use it.

A passport card is a wallet-size document that can only be used to reenter the United States at land border crossings and seaports of entry from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. It provides a less expensive ($30), smaller alternative to the passport book for those who travel frequently to these destinations by land or sea.

Passport cards cannot be used for international travel by air.

To  apply for a passport card , use the same form as applying for a passport book. You can apply for both simultaneously. The processing time for the card is the same as for the book, but cards are only sent via first-class mail.

Proof of Travel Plans to Expedite a U.S. Passport

 What is proof of the Travel Plan? Depending on the specific type of international trip that you’re taking, there are always a number of important things to keep in mind. In addition to making sure that you have the appropriate passport or visa required by your destination.  You will be required to submit proof of travel plans to expedite a passport when you apply for any type of expedited passport at a passport agency or private passport expediting company.

This document is required at most passport agencies and would have to show that you would be traveling within 2 weeks or 30 days if a visa is required.

This all may sound a bit complicated, especially if you’re already stressed out from getting ready for your big trip, but don’t really – it’s actually quite straightforward. To properly submit your proof of travel plans for an expedited passport , you will have to provide two copies of one of the following types of documents within two weeks (14 days) of the time that you submit your initial application:

• A copy of your plane ticket showing your destination and other necessary time-related information about your trip, or a confirmation of the hotel that you’re booked that you plan to stay at when you arrive at your destination.
• A copy of your travel itinerary that you received from either the travel agent that you’re working with to plan the trip or from some type of online booking agency.
• A copy of an official business letter from your employer (in the event that you’re taking an international trip for the purposes of business) that details exactly why you’re visiting the country in question, how long you plan on staying and more.

It is important to note that if you plan on submitting a business letter as your proof of travel plans for an international trip, these documents are accepted purely on a case by case basis by the Department of State in the United States.

As a general rule of thumb, always try to submit your hotel confirmation or travel itinerary first as these are accepted in all application situations. If you do plan on going forward with submitting a business letter, make sure it includes all travel dates and other bits of relevant information.

Passport Considerations and Employment

It is also important to note that if you are trying to expedite a passport application exclusively so that you can either go on a business trip or accept some type of employment opportunity in an international destination, you will be unable to do so for this specific purpose. You will still need to provide the appropriate proof of your travel plans for the international trip for your application to be successful.

If your international trip is to Mexico or Canada and you will be renting a car to get around, you can write a brief statement to the Department of State indicating your intentions to do so and submit it along with the rest of your documents.

Step 1: Gather Documents Early

Generally, you should apply for your new passport as soon as you know you’ll be traveling internationally—at least several months in advance. Passport processing times may vary, so be sure to check the latest State Department service estimates . First-time applicants, minors, and applicants who need a new passport but may not renew by mail may submit their passport application at the Post Office. Step 2: Prepare Your Application Package

Visit the U.S. Department of State website to learn how to apply for a passport and what documents you need.

• Complete your Form DS-11 Application for U.S. Passport on the State Department website.
• Print your completed application. DO NOT SIGN YOUR APPLICATION. A Postal employee must witness your signature.
• Have a passport photo taken.
• Photocopy your proof of identity and U.S. Citizenship documents.
• Post Offices accept credit cards, checks, and money orders for Post Office acceptance fees.
• State Department fees are mailed with your application. You can pay with a personal, certified, cashier's, traveler's check, or money order, payable to "U.S. Department of State."

Post Offices that offer passport services have set hours, and you'll need to schedule an appointment using the online Retail Customer Appointment Scheduler or a Post Office lobby self-service kiosk.

• Go to Schedule an Appointment .
• Choose the passport service you need, along with the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
• You can search for appointment by location or date first. If you search by location first, you'll then be asked to choose a date and time; if you search by date first, you'll then need to choose a location and time.
• After you choose your appointment location and time, provide your contact information, and agree to the Terms and Conditions.
• Click Review Appointment , then confirm your appointment.

If you need to modify or cancel your appointment, click the Manage Appointments tab and enter your confirmation number and email address or phone number.

Using a Self-Service Kiosk

• Go to a Post Office location with lobby self-service kiosks. Find USPS Locations
• At the self-service kiosk, touch the screen to begin, then select "Other Services," then "Passport Scheduler."
• Choose the passport service you need, then enter the number of adults and minors who need appointments.
• Search for Post Office locations by ZIP Code™ or City/State and choose a location.
• Select an available appointment date and time, then agree to the Terms and Conditions.
• Enter your contact information and decide if you'd like to receive SMS text notifications.

Step 4: Pay Passport Acceptance & Processing Fees

First-time passport applications have two types of basic fees, the application acceptance fee and the application processing fee. Passport photos and fees for faster processing are extra. Learn how to calculate fees and what you can use to pay for them.

Application Acceptance Fees – Postal Service

Pay acceptance fees in person at the Post Office. You may pay by check or money order, payable to "Postmaster," debit card, or credit card.

Application Processing Fees – Department of State

State Department payment is sent with your application package. State Department fees are paid separately from USPS fees.

• State Department Fees State Department passport fees vary. Calculate passport fees online .

• Money order payable to "U.S. Department of State." You can buy a money order at the Post Office with cash, a debit card, or a traveler's check. You cannot pay with a credit card.

Application Status Updates

• Use the Online Passport Status System to check your application status if you applied by mail or in person. You may not be able to get a status update for 2 weeks after you apply or renew. During these weeks, your application and supporting documents are on their way to the Department of State. Renew a Passport by Mail

If you are eligible to renew your passport, please complete Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 (see completion instructions on the form), and mail your completed renewal application directly to the State Department for processing. To verify if your passport is eligible for renewal by mail, please visit State Department Renew By Mail .

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility to Renew by Mail

A minor's passport may not be renewed by mail; to renew a minor's passport, you need to submit a new, first-time passport application in person . An adult passport may be renewed by mail if it meets certain requirements.

You can renew your adult passport by mail if you answer "Yes" to all 5 of the following statements:

Your passport:

• Is in your possession to submit with your application.
• Is undamaged other than normal "wear and tear."
• Was issued when you were age 16 or older.
• Was issued within the last 15 years.
• Was issued in your current name or you can document your name change. (Name changes are explained on Change a Passport .)

If your passport does not meet all these requirements, do not mail your renewal application. You must prepare the same application package as a first-time passport applicant.

State Department Renew by Mail

Apply early for renewals as many countries require that passports be valid for at least 6 months after you enter their country. Learn how to properly prepare your application package and include all the necessary documents so your passport is processed on time.

• Complete your Passport Renewal Application Form DS-82 on the State Department website.
• Print and sign your DS-82 form.
• Have a passport photo taken. You can schedule a passport photo-only appointment at a Post Office ™ location.
• Calculate your passport renewal fees .
• Collect your most recent passport, completed and signed application, renewal fees, and name change documents, if needed.
• Use an envelope large enough to fit the application without folding it.
• TIP : Pay for Priority Mail Express ® or Priority Mail ® service and get free envelopes that are large enough to hold your application. Order easily online: Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelope or Priority Mail Flat Rate Envelope .
• Address the envelope to the location for your state. See page 2 of your DS-82 form.

From emergency travel to suddenly realizing your passport has expired right before a big international trip, there are numerous situations that might require a quick passport turnaround..

Whether last-minute travel plans have suddenly sprung up or a big international trip is here before you had time to double-check the expiration date on your passport, it’s not uncommon for travelers to have to expedite their U.S. passport applications.

Several other situations might require a new or renewed passport in a hurry as well. For example, some countries don’t permit entry if your passport has less than six months of validity. Some international destinations, like South Africa, require that you have at least two consecutive blank pages in your passport book. It’s important to check the U.S. State Department’s website for each country’s visa and passport requirements or contact your airline or travel agency before you hit the road to make sure that your travel documents will be accepted upon arrival.

The process (for both renewing and getting a new passport quickly ) is fairly similar to the regular application process , which can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Due to a big surge in demand for new and renewed U.S. passports—the U.S. State Department processed nearly 22 million passports in 2022, more than at any point since tallying began in 1974— standard passport processing times inched back up in early 2023.

Here’s what you need to know to get a passport in your hands as quickly as possible.

How long does it take to get an expedited passport?

During the pandemic, even expedited services experienced a massive slowdown. Thankfully, both regular and rushed passport processing times started to come down toward the end of 2021. But in early 2023, regular passport processing times crept back up due to a massive influx in applications—the standard processing period is 8 to 11 weeks, according to a March 2023 update from the State Department, up from the 6 to 9 weeks for a routine passport application in January 2023.

If you apply for an expedited passport directly though the U.S. State Department, processing times are about 5 to 7 weeks, according to a March 7 update —but that doesn’t include mail delivery times, which according to the State Department can add “several weeks” to the total processing time.

“Processing times begin the day we receive your application at a passport agency or center, not the day you mail your application or apply. Mailing times may add several weeks on to the door-to-door time it takes to receive your passport,” the State Department reports.

Nevertheless, the 5- to 7-week time frame is down from the 12 to 18 weeks the agency had estimated for expedited passport service during the pandemic. For a faster turnaround, an expeditor like RushMyPassport.com offers services that are as speedy as one or two weeks, but it’ll cost: The fastest one-week service is about $800. At press time, RushMyPassport.com offered expedited passport services ranging from 1 to 10 weeks from the time documents are received by the agency.

If you need it within 7 weeks, you can still do it yourself

If you have a life-or-death emergency or urgent international travel coming up within 14 days, you can make an in-person appointment at one of the 26 passport agencies throughout the United States. You must have an appointment to visit an agency, and the only way to make an appointment is by calling 1-877-487-2778.

You can also apply via mail. The window for expediting is 5 to 7 weeks, but as mentioned above that doesn’t include mail delivery times, which can vary widely across the country.

How to apply for an expedited passport

Don’t wait until you’re at the airport to find out your passport isn’t travel ready.

To apply for a rushed passport, begin at the State Department’s website , where a handy checklist will keep you from making a mistake that could slow down the process. The $60 expediting fee (plus overnight shipping) is not refundable, so make sure you have dotted all your i’s and crossed all your t’s when applying. This fee is in addition to the standard $130 application fee—so $190 total for the expedited passport service (not including shipping). First-time applicants are charged an additional $35 execution fee.

If you want the expedited service, you need to send your application using Priority Mail Express with the U.S. Postal Service. The State Department recommends that applicants send their application via trackable mail so that applicants can know exactly when it arrives and enters the system. Travelers can also opt for one- to two-day return delivery of their passport for an extra $19.53, to help speed things along somewhat.

If you score an appointment to apply in person, you must use form DS-11. To apply by mail, you’ll need to use the form DS-82 (you can download these forms here ). Submitted forms must be single-sided and printed clearly. Complete the application online before printing it out or by hand in black or blue ink; remember to write “expedited” on the envelope and include two recent photos that meet the passport photo specifications. If applying by mail, you must include a check; if applying in person, find out what methods of payment are allowed at your specific acceptance facility.

You can renew your passport by mail and can begin the process online as long as you are in possession of your expired or expiring passport; your passport was issued when you were age 16 or older; it was issued within the past 15 years; and it was issued to your current name or you have documentation to support a name change. Children under 16, all first-time applicants, and applicants who have lost their passport or had it stolen must apply in person.

You can make a free appointment ahead of time but spaces are limited—passport agencies and acceptance facilities are not accepting walk-in services and require advance appointments. Acceptance facilities include post offices, clerks of court, libraries, and local government offices. If you want to apply at a post office, you need to make an appointment at USPS.com . Other acceptance facilities may be requiring advance appointments as well.

Passport agency appointments must be scheduled over the phone by calling 1-877-487-2778 or 1-888-874-7793 TDD/TTY between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. The online appointment system was disabled after an underground market developed; third parties using bots would secure urgent appointments and then sell them to travelers in a bind. Many of these were not even legitimate appointments.

How an expeditor can (and can’t) help

Expediting agencies are companies that assist with rushed passport applications. They charge an additional fee (on top of the standard passport application fee and expedited passport service fee) but can often help navigate the ins and outs of the expediting process. Services like RushMyPassport.com double-check your application before it gets submitted and catch any errors or snags that might slow it down. The fastest turnaround time RushMyPassport.com offers is one week for $799 or a two-week option for $599. Even these can be limited in availability since expeditors also rely on a subset of appointments being available.

David Alwadish, CEO and founder of ItsEasy Passport & Visa , notes that the expediting slots get snatched up quickly. ItsEasy Passport & Visa currently charges $45 for its four-week passport processing service and $895 for one-day service. “One- to three-day passport service requires urgent travel. Please contact us for details,” the agency advises. Do-it-yourselfers can also use his company’s ItsEasy Passport App to submit applications for standard passport processing.

If you need it within 24 to 72 hours, try going to an agency in person

If it’s a life-or-death emergency , such as an illness, injury, or a death in your immediate family, getting an emergency appointment at an agency in person is the only option. Instead of wasting a day with overnight shipping, you can save valuable time by going in-person—even if you have to fly to a passport agency in the departure city of your international flight. In these circumstances, it can take anywhere between 24 and 72 hours depending on where you apply and if you can provide accepted documentation, such as a death certificate or signed documentation from medical personnel.

One final tip . . .

The best thing you can do to avoid paying extra for expediting your passport is to set a calendar reminder for nine months before the expiration date of your current valid passport, for those who have one. At that point, you can look ahead at your travels and figure out the best 18-week period to apply—one where, ideally, you know you won’t be heading abroad. If you travel frequently enough that such a period is hard to identify, you may want to look into the option of applying for a second passport .

Proof of Travel Plans to Expedite a Passport

Proof of Travel Plans are required for all expedited passports. There is no way around the proof of travel plans requirement. This is required by the U.S. Department of State in order to issue an expedited passport. You can only renew an adult passport if the old passport is less than five years expired, is not lost, stolen, or damaged, and was issued when the applicant was 16 or older.

Applicants must provide two copies of one of the following travel documents below proving your international travel within 14 days of this application submission.

Acceptable Proof of Foreign travel:

• Plane ticket / Hotel Confirmation
• Travel itinerary from a travel agent or online booking (E-Ticket)
• Business letter from your employer. Click here for a sample business letter or scroll to the bottom of the page for more info.
• (Note: Business letters are accepted on a case by case basis by the U.S. Department of State. We always recommend that the applicant have a confirmed travel itinerary or hotel confirmation. Include travel dates in the business letter.)

IMPORTANT: Travel plans must go inside of the hand carry envelope when you appear at the acceptance agent. Please review our instructional checklists carefully if this sentence does not make sense to you!

For Employment or Identification Purposes

You cannot expedite a passport exclusively for your job or potential employment opportunities. You will still need to provide proof of travel to expedite. This is a government requirement so you should include flight itinerary or e-tickets, etc. If you cannot provide this, a business letter must be very specific with travel dates and on official business letterhead and signed.

For Driving Plans (Mexico and Canada)

You can write a brief statement to the U.S. Department of State Philadelphia Passport Office. Please use the format below:

Applicants that are traveling for business and do not have flights or itineraries already booked may use a business letter as proof of travel plans. While there is no guarantee that a passport will be approved based on a business letter, the more official it is (with estimated travel dates included), the more likely it will be approved. The letter should be on company letterhead. It should also be signed by an official in your company other than yourself. The business letter should include the purpose of the trip, the destination, and an explanation as to why you are unable to provide an itinerary. Include the earliest date that you must have your passport. Use our sample business letter template below. Please be sure to include travel dates.

There are many reasons why someone may need a new passport . Whether it's because your last one was damaged or it was expired , you'll want to have a valid passport before you travel. And you'll need one if you have an upcoming international trip.

Applying for a passport can feel a little heavy on the bureaucracy thanks to all the documents and forms you need. And once you've applied, the wait time to get it may be longer than expected.

How to get a passport?

The process for passport application varies depending on your situation.

According to the U.S. Department of State, you should apply in person if:

• You are applying for your first passport.
• You are applying for your child who is under 16.
• Your previous passport was issued when you were under 16.
• Your previous passport was lost, stolen or damaged.
• Your previous passport was issued over 15 years ago.

In these cases, you must fill out form DS-11 (that can be found online ) and print it to apply in person.

If none of the above apply, you may be able to get a new passport by mail. According to the State Department, you are eligible to renew by mail if:

• You have your most recent passport (and it is not damaged) and can submit it with your application.
• Your most recent passport was never reported lost or stolen.
• Your most recent passport was issued in the last 15 years.
• Your most recent passport issued when you were 16 or older.
• Your most recent passport is issued to your current name, or you can present a document – such as a marriage certificate or divorce papers – as evidence of a legal name change.
• "It was not limited to less than the normal 10 year period of validity for an adult passport due to multiple passport thefts or losses, or due to issues with passport damage or mutilation."

In these cases, fill out form DS-82 (that can be found online ).

What do you need to get a passport?

According to the USAGov, if you are applying for a passport for the first time as an adult , you must bring the following:

• Application form (form DS-11)
• Proof of citizenship (such as birth certificate) and government-issued photo ID (such as driver's license)
• Photocopies of both citizenship document and photo ID
• Passport photo

According to the USAGov, these are the documents you will need if you're renewing :

• Renewal form (form DS-82)
• Your most recent passport 

If your name has changed since your last passport, you will have to provide legal documentation to verify, such as a certified copy of your marriage certificate or a court order of name change.

How fast can I get a passport?

Expedited processing time is two to three weeks for passport applications applied on or after Dec. 18 2023, according to the State Department.

Processing time does not include mailing time. It could take up to two weeks from your application day for your passport to be "in process." 

As of May 2024, routine processing time is six to eight weeks .

Reminders for Printing Your Application

• Make sure the image of the application covers the entire page.
• Use vertical, portrait format. Do not print your form horizontally. Doing so will cause delays with your application.

Primary Application Forms for a U.S. Passport

1. Application For A U.S. Passport (DS-11) 

• You should complete this form if you're applying for the first time , you're applying for your child who is under age 16 , or you don't meet our requirements to renew your passport. Print the form but do not sign it until you are instructed to do so. You can also download the form if you are having issues with the form filler. 

2.  Renewal Application  (DS-82)

• You should complete this form if you meet our requirements to renew your passport . Keep in mind that children under age 16 cannot renew their passports and must apply using Form DS-11. Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

3. Data Corrections, Some Name Changes, and Limited-Validity Passports (DS-5504) 

• You may be eligible to use this form if you need to change or correct your passport , or you need to replace a passport that was limited to less than 10 years validity (which is the normal validity period for an adult's passport.) Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

Forms for Special Situations

• You should complete this form if you lost your passport or it has been stolen . To replace a lost or stolen passport, you must apply in person and submit Form DS-11 in addition to Form DS-64. 

2. Statement of Consent for Issuing a Passport to a Child (DS-3053)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot go with the child to apply in person for the child's passport. The parent or guardian should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11). 

3.  Statement of Special Family Circumstances (DS-5525)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot locate the other parent or guardian. The parent who is applying should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11).

4. Statement You Did Not Receive Your U.S. Passport (DS-86)

• You should submit this form only if we mailed your passport and you did not receive it within two weeks of us mailing it. Call the National Passport Information Center and the customer service representatives will walk you through this form.
