If you’re looking for an everyday, running-inspired sneaker that won’t break the bank, you can’t go wrong with the Adidas Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker. Made especially for women, they feature a breathable, foot-hugging textile upper and a combined Cloudfoam midsole and outsole. We found the latter so comfortable that we likened wearing them to having our feet cradled by a cloud and reported no rubbing or irritation even though we wore them for extended periods without socks. The shoes have laces and score sustainability points by utilizing high-performance recycled materials. 

We found them impressively durable, with no noticeable wear or odor even after all three test wears. The soles got a little bit dirty, but we were able to clean them with a wipe of a damp cloth. As for the price tag, we were astonished when we discovered how affordable these sneakers are—our tester would happily have paid three times the price for the quality and comfort experienced. The shoes come in neutral colors and full and half sizes from 5 to 12. We found that they fit perfectly and were true to size.

First launched in 1925, the Superga 2750 Cotu Classic Sneaker has become an emblem of Italian style inspired by ladies’ tennis shoes. Although more expensive than our overall winner, we feel that the price tag is a fair reflection of its combined quality and style. It features a cotton upper and lining, a rubber outsole, and a lace closure. Our tester found the shoes incredibly comfortable out of the box, with cushioned soles that provided good support for indoor and outdoor use. The fit was true to size, although those with wide feet may want to size up. 

However, we would recommend them for a light travel day rather than one with extensive walking since we did experience some discomfort after spending more than two-thirds of the day on our feet. Nevertheless, we were impressed by the quality construction with thick soles and sturdy stitching. We also appreciated that the shoes didn’t become saturated when caught in the rain as other fabric shoes may do. Choose one of many gorgeous pastel colors, from classic white to violet or light blue.

The New Balance 574 Core Sneaker wins our vote as an easy, neutral choice that’s well-made and superbly comfortable. Designed as a hybrid road and trail shoe, it’s suitable for wherever your walking takes you, even on a trip to Disney. We found the sneakers so lightweight it was easy to forget we were wearing them. This lightness comes from their recycled polyester mesh upper with responsibly sourced leather accents and EVA foam cushioning around the midsole and heel. A rubber outsole provides solid arch support. 

We especially liked that the laces stayed tied throughout our test wear periods and that the shoes went well with most casual outfits. In fact, we were surprised to find this level of comfort and style for under $100 (although you’d likely want a flashier sneaker for anything more formal). We found the sneakers roomier than expected, although the New Balance website recommends sizing up. But, with extended-width sizes available, you should be able to find your perfect fit. Colors range from black to burgundy or navy, all with white accents.

If you’re headed to the big city and need travel shoes that look as good as they feel, we recommend the On Running Cloudrift Sneaker. Available in three colorways—White/Sand, Metal/Navy, or Ivory/Storm—they’re as fashion-forward as a sneaker can be, looking just as good with cute jeans or dresses as they do with athleisure wear. We loved the lightweight, breathable mesh upper made of performance running materials and the added heel cushioning provided by the Speedboard midsole. 

The shoes were comfortable right out of the box, with zero time required to break them in. Our tester appreciated their significant support—but did caution that potential buyers should size their pair carefully to avoid the structured cushioning hitting in awkward places and causing discomfort. There are no extra-width sizes, unfortunately. Nevertheless, with no wear and tear visible after our test period, these sneakers are likely to last a long time and are both light and packable enough to make them the perfect traveling companion.

Comfortable, attractive, lightweight, quick to dry, and easy to clean—it’s difficult to imagine a more perfect summer travel shoe than the KEEN Elle Backstrap Sandal. We loved the stretchy straps, allowing a snug fit without cutting off circulation. Made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles, the straps held their shape even after miles of walking, keeping our feet securely in place with no slipping or sliding. The sandals also feature a compression-molded EVA midsole and an EVA footbed with arch support for all-day comfort. 

The rubber outsole offers plenty of traction and is non-marking, making it ideal for adventurous travel—whether you’re hitting the trail or heading out on a boat trip. The outsoles are also sustainable, using jute infusions to reduce the amount of rubber used. While pricey for sandals, we ultimately felt the cost was well worth it for the combination of quality and understated style. Our test pair was true to size, and there are many colors to choose from, including two-toned, patterned, and tie-dye shades.

Although we liked the Chaco Zx2 Classic Sandals so much we would recommend them “for anyone, for any kind of wear,” we found them particularly suitable for hiking trips. The polyester jacquard webbing straps wrap around the foot and through the midsole and are fully adjustable. This, combined with the added toe loop, makes the fit fully customizable for incredibly sturdy, supportive, all-day comfort. After eight solid hours of active wear, our feet were not tired. 

The sandals also feature a podiatrist-accepted, women’s specific PU footbed that promotes alignment and a non-marking ChacoGrip rubber outsole. We found the latter very thick, with a deep lug for excellent traction on rougher terrain. The only downside? We did experience some initial chafing around the toe loop, so we recommend breaking the sandals in before heading out on a hike. Choose yours in a medium or wide fit, in a range of colors from classic black to statement-making prints.

The Olukai Pehuea Lī ‘Ili Sneaker is an excellent choice for traveling professionals who need to look put-together but still want all-day comfort. Crafted from soft, full-grain leather, the shoes mold to your feet as you wear them, with anatomically contoured footbeds that we found instantly comfortable—no breaking-in required. The sneakers provide good arch support and offer a roomy toe box (perfect for those with wide feet).

Other than that, we loved that the footbeds are both removable and washable—a major plus for those who don’t like ruining their workplace aesthetic by wearing socks with their sneakers. And, a collapsible drop-in heel converts the sneakers to slip-ons for easy on-and-off through the airport (or under your desk). Other highlights include the non-marking Wet Grip Rubber outsole and the construction, which is durable enough to justify the slightly higher price tag. Choose from a range of office-appropriate colors, including white, tan, or black.

Most Sustainable

One for all those who want to look and feel good while also doing their bit to save the planet, the Allbirds Plant Pacers are 100 percent plastic- and petroleum-free. The uppers are made from plant leather, while the sugarcane-based, green EVA foam midsole is lined with a eucalyptus and recycled polyester blend. The outsole is natural rubber; even the laces feature 100 percent recycled polyester. We love the brand’s commitment to upcycling and feel that the shoes’ sustainability justifies their high-end price tag. 

They’re also lovely to look at, with a clean, refined aesthetic reinforced by a classic cupsole stitch. The only drawback is the slightly off-white color, which we felt seemed slightly unintentional, with no other colors to choose from. Nevertheless, the shade did hold up well to extended wear, despite our fears about potential staining. We found the shoes a little stiff out of the box, but within a wear or two, they felt as if we had owned them for years. They’re sturdy without being too rigid, with a comfortably thick sole and cushioned heel.

We loved the look of the Frankie4 Winnie II Suede Sneakers, with their luxe perforated leather uppers and buttery soft suede accents. We had never experienced such out-of-the-box comfort before, so we would wholeheartedly recommend these sneakers despite them costing roughly four times the price of our overall winner. They have a shock-absorbing sole and use a specifically placed foam lining (made from recycled plastic bottles) to prevent pressure and rubbing. 

Furthermore, the podiatrist-designed footbed features a triple-layer system for impressive heel, arch, and forefoot support. We found that our heels didn’t move at all, and at no time did our toes feel cramped. Using the included insole set, the fit can also be customized to suit regular, wide, or narrow feet. Other benefits include the slip-resistant sole, the absence of any heavy materials for travel-friendly lightness, and an additional set of laces for alternate styling. The sneakers come in just two colors: white and black/white.

The Cloudfoam Pure Sneaker from Adidas has everything you want in a travel shoe: a light and breathable upper, extra cushy and supportive soles, and a reasonable price tag. If you are the type of traveler who tends to rack up miles at your destination, go for the New Balance 574 Core Sneaker .

First, we removed each pair of shoes from their packaging and visually inspected their material and design quality. In particular, we tested for potential arch support issues by seeing how much the sole flexed when bent in the middle. Next, we completed at least three test wear periods: the first for 30 minutes, the second for three hours, and the third for a full day. 

During each test period, we evaluated the shoes’ fit, whether they chafed or applied pressure in uncomfortable places, how breathable they were, and their traction on various surfaces and in different weather conditions. Finally, we scored each pair from 1 to 5 for comfort, fit, quality, and value, with the overall score determining whether they were included in our final selection.

Other Travel Shoes We Tested

Allbirds Wool Runners : While we found these sneakers comfortable and appreciated their sleek look, they were unsuitable for use in any kind of precipitation—making them too limited for a travel shoe.

Vessi Women's Everyday Classic : We loved that these shoes were waterproof and lightweight, making them super versatile. However, they lost points because we didn't think they were stylish enough for evening wear. 

Suavs Women's The Zilker Gum : Although comfortable, we had concerns about the long-term durability of these shoes. They're also relatively expensive, although we did appreciate their packability and removable insoles. 

Taos Footwear Women's Star Sneaker : We found that these sneakers fit more narrowly than expected and experienced some rubbing during our test wears. We also felt that the arch support was uncomfortably pronounced. 

TripSavvy / Anna Knief

ECCO Women's Soft Sneaker : These sneakers were comfortable from the first wear and essentially fine in every way (if a bit overpriced). However, we wished they were a brighter white and came in half sizes. 

Ryka Devotion Plus 3 Walking Shoe : While we felt these shoes weren't comfortable or supportive enough for serious runners, they were great for everyday use. The quality was good, and we liked their lightweight breathability. 

Birdies The Starling : These shoes had a significant break-in period, but they were very comfortable afterward. We loved the premium materials and professional look but would recommend it for business travel only.

BIRKENSTOCK Arizona Essentials EVA : The pros of these shoes are that they're light, waterproof, and attractive. Cons were that it took a while to get the fit right and that they were pretty expensive for a simple sandal. 

Teva Universal Trail Sandals : These are excellent quality, comfortable sandals that will likely last a long time. They're on the more expensive side, though, and we'd recommend sizing up if you're between sizes. 

Osay Leather Slide Loafer : We love these beautifully made shoes for their quality leather construction, comfort, and the fact they can transform into slip-ons via a collapsible heel. They don't have much support, though.

What to Look For in Travel Shoes

Type of shoe.

The best type of shoe depends on where you’re going, the weather you’re expecting, and the kind of activities you’ll be doing. For a city break with lots of walking around town and perhaps a few park outings or urban hikes, you can’t beat a comfortable sneaker with plenty of breathable support. Choose one in a neutral shade like white, black, or tan, and you can probably wear it out to dinner as well—saving you from having to pack formal footwear. If you’re headed somewhere tropical , a lightweight, quick-drying sandal with a cute aesthetic and enough traction to be practical is the perfect all-rounder. 

The travel shoes mentioned on this list range in price from around $50 to approximately $200. With our overall winner also being the most affordable, it’s definitely possible to buy the perfect travel shoe without breaking the bank. However, you may want to pay a little more for a brand you know and love, for premium quality materials that will stand the test of time, or for a shoe that gives you peace of mind by exclusively using plant-based or recycled materials. Generally speaking, $100 is the average you should expect to spend on a good pair of travel shoes, with anything less or more representing the cheaper and pricier ends of the spectrum, respectively. 

Wearability

If one of the defining features of a travel shoe is that it can be worn in multiple different scenarios (and will therefore be one of only a few pairs you take with you), it’s essential that you actually enjoy wearing it and are comfortable doing so. Fit is key—the shoe should hug snugly enough that there’s no slippage when you walk, without rubbing, chafing, or putting pressure on any part of your foot or toes. If you’re going to be wearing the shoe for extended periods, some arch support is a good idea, while breathability is important if you plan on using the shoe for active pursuits such as hiking, running, or extensive walking.

The number of shoes you should pack for a vacation is very subjective, with the answer depending on everything from the climate of your destination to the range of activities you’ll be taking part in and your personal style choices. But, savvy travelers often apply the three-shoe rule to their packing: one pair of sandals or flip-flops, one pair of comfy sneakers that can also be dressed up, and possibly a pair of formal shoes or heels. You can switch one or more of these out to suit your specific needs—proper walking boots instead of heels for a hiking trip , perhaps, or insulated winter boots instead of sandals if you’re headed somewhere chilly. 

How you clean your travel shoes depends a lot on the shoe, with different methods recommended for different types, materials, and brands. The best option is to check and follow individual manufacturer’s guidelines for shoe cleaning and care. Generally speaking, though, many shoes can be spot-cleaned with a damp cloth. Some are machine washable, while others have removable insoles that can be washed separately. The latter is a good idea if you’re heading somewhere warm, tend to get sweaty feet when walking a lot, or prefer not to wear socks with your sneakers. 

Although taking your shoes off at security is not a requirement at every airport, it’s a common enough rule that it makes sense to fly in footwear that’s easy to take off and put back on again quickly. That means swapping laces for zippers, elasticated straps, or pull-on styles, or, if you’re heading somewhere warm, opting for sandals or flip-flops. Some of the shoes on our list are designed with a collapsible heel so that you can slip your feet in and out in a matter of seconds but also enjoy a more structured, supported style when you reach your destination. Security aside, it’s always a good idea to fly in comfortable shoes —think sneakers, not heels.

Susie Plotkin, who works on Condé Nast's global email team, calls these platform boots “the perfect shoe.” She's had them for about three years, and has taken them everywhere. “My boyfriend lives in Switzerland, and they’re the shoe I wear to sightsee around Zurich. I've spent 12 hours walking around Venice in them, and regularly stomp all around Brooklyn in them. They’re a little heavy but super comfortable and can slide on and off so easily.”

A cold-weather favorite of senior commerce editor Madison Flager , these Blundstone boots required no break-in time, and are a great all-purpose boot for fall or winter trips. The pull tabs make them easy to get back on, the shock absorption keeps your feet feeling good even after a few hours on the move, and the double stitching, durable leather, and tough outsole mean you won't be replacing them a few trips later.

Former Traveler editor Meredith Carey wears these waterproof Blondo boots almost all winter long, and brings them along on any fall and winter trips. “They look and feel like leather but I can wear them in snow and rain—I don't have to worry about my shoes surviving when I'm tromping around day-to-day in New York or a new city,” she says. Senior editor Megan Spurrell is a fan of Vagabond's lug sole boots, and recommends a style with a wider toe for maximum comfort on long days of walking. Best for city trips, these Chelsea boots are on the bulkier side, so wear them through security to cut down on suitcase weight.

Spurrell has waxed poetic about Frye's Melissa Chelsea boots before: They're her go-to for any city trip. They look good with jeans, leggings , or dresses, pack down well, and over time, have become as comfortable as sneakers. Plus, they last for years and are sturdy enough to navigate cobblestone streets. What more could you want?

New Balance sneakers have made a major comeback. This style of the cool dad shoes are frequently worn by associate commerce editor Meaghan Kenny , who says this: “These sneakers are just as comfortable as they are cool. I’ve had them for about two years now and they’ve come with me on a weekend trip spent walking around Boston , to the airport for a few flights, and on my very long commutes to the office. They’re a perfect balance of sporty and stylish—they don’t hurt my feet after hours of walking and the neutral shade always matches a variety of outfits in my carry-on. Besides my classic white sneakers , these are my most worn shoe. Bonus: I’m not very cautious about getting my sneakers dirty, but these have somehow stayed clean and in excellent condition—so don’t worry too much about its light hue.”

Hop on the New York City subway and you're bound to see a pair of Vejas or two on your fellow passengers' feet. Global digital director Arati Menon was first drawn to Veja because of the sleek, minimalist design and the company’s commitment to responsible sourcing. She landed on the Campo because of its chunkier sole—both an aesthetic preference and a practical one, as it offers more support. “The biggest criticism with Vejas are that they’re stiff when you first buy them, and this is somewhat true—but I’m generally cautious not to overuse new shoes for the first few times, breaking into them little by little,” she says, noting that the Campo is more comfortable out of the box than other Veja styles. “I’ve taken my Campos on rugged national park adventures and European city breaks, and use them as workwear staples. I just retired mine after years of use, but I’m sure I’ll buy another at some point.” To clean, Menon recommends a combination of mild dishwashing liquid on a damp cloth and a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser .

The Adonis is a newer style for Naot—a podiatrist-approved footwear brand —that dropped earlier this year. The sock-style slip-on is made with a removable cork and latex footbed that promises all-day comfort. Flager is a fan of the easy-to-match white and light pink style, and recommends them for city trips. (Pro tip: Bombas's cushioned no-show socks are just the right size to wear underneath.)

There's a reason why the Adidas Stan Smith has evolved from a tennis shoe to a streetwear classic (and can be found on multiple Traveler editors' shoe racks): They're too comfortable to ever want to take off. If you're going on a short trip and only have room for one pair of shoes, wear these—they can handle anything from a day of sightseeing to an impromptu hike, are easy to slide on and off at airport security, and will make you look chic, without sacrificing an ounce of comfort.

Allbirds are a great pick for most every vacation thanks to their versatility and true all-day comfort. These Tree Runners come highly recommended by contributor Lauren Dana Ellman and are available in a half dozen colorways and just as many limited-edition hues. Recommended by Glamour and Teen Vogue commerce director Brie Schwartz , this playful spin on the classic Converse low-top will add a bit of fun to your travel day. The sneakers are relatively lightweight thanks to the canvas upper, and the vulcanized rubber sole helps with traction.

Look down in an exercise class or marathon and you're bound to see, at minimum, a few pairs of Hokas around you. Glamour 's senior commerce editor, Jenifer Calle , is partial to the brand's Kawana style: “I wore these sneakers when I was in San Antonio last year and they were a lifesaver for my feet,” Calle says. “I did a lot of walking during this trip and was not prepared for the Texas heat. (At one point my partner and I had to step into an H&M to cool off.) Luckily, my sneaks were very bouncy and breathable, so my feet never felt tired or sweaty.”

For those who live in Lululemon athleticwear, the brand's running shoes are a natural extension to your travel wardrobe. Traveler contributor and runner Rachel Chang tested these out when they launched in 2022, and was immediately impressed by the fit (designed specifically for a woman's foot), breathability, and smart features, like a reflective backing.

Editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs wears these shoes everywhere: “To the gym, to the park, to the rave—I sometimes have to remind myself that I own other shoes. You don't have to tie them, just pull a cord [to secure them]. They are so comfortable and easy.”

I love that the rocker bottoms feel like they give me an extra push during my jog. I’m never going back to regular minimalist sneakers.”

Allbirds' sneakers are known for being comfortable, but the Tree Dashers—the brand's first pair made specifically for runners—ups the ante. The thick sole will cushion your feet on the longest of days spent exploring, and if you are someone who jogs on vacation, you can pack one less pair of shoes to do so.

Known as the most popular hiking shoe in the world—more than 25 million pairs have been sold since it debuted 15 years ago—Flager was excited to put the new third generation model of the Merrell Moab to the test. “I brought them along on a recent trip to Iceland, which involved some moderate hikes and city walks on wet roads; the shoe held up nicely on both occasions. The shoes have great traction, fit comfortably, and didn't take up tons of room in my carry-on—I can see why they're so beloved.” Jake Smith , a commerce writer for Glamour , is a big fan of the shoe, too: “I've worn them for three years, and while they're nice for hiking, I really love them as walking shoes,” he says.

Emma McDonald, who works on the digital marketing team for Condé Nast, recommends these recovery shoes from Kane. “I have had them for about six months and use them at my standing desk all day long, and while running errands.” The cushiony shoe is made out of Brazilian sugarcane, with raised footbed nodes that are designed to activate blood flow in key pressure points on the sole of your foot.

Malia Griggs , Glamour 's commerce editor, is a big fan of these SeaeVees clogs. “I thought they’d just be rain boots , but I end up wearing them all the time because they’re so easy to slip on, are comfy, and perfect for any sort of drizzly days when I’m out and about in the city,” she says. “This summer, I spent a week in the North Carolina mountains and brought them with me since they’re good plane shoes (easy on and off at security!) and also durable and waterproof enough for walks on little trails. I appreciate that they have enough of a backing to not slide all the way off when I’m walking.”

Another favorite of Schwartz, these leather lug loafers are fairly light at just half a pound each, with a comfortably low heel height of 1.1 inches. Basic black goes with everything, but for a pop of color, order them in red or emerald green.

These colorful Sabah slip-ons come highly recommended by articles director Lale Arikoglu , who calls them “a permanent fixture on my packing list.” They come in dozens of colors, in either a butter soft leather or suede, and are hand stitched by one of the 10 shoemakers who comprise the Sabah Workshop in Gaziantep. “The more I wear them, the better they fit, molding to my feet like a glove—almost as if they were designed just for me,” she says.

This black and white Cole Hahn shoe toes the line between loafer and sneaker perfectly—it's nice enough to wear into the office after hopping off a plane, but casual (and comfortable) enough to wear during a day of sightseeing. If you own enough basic black, you can get the pair with an off-white, gold, or silver leather top, too. Either way, the shoe is made for long days: There's traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on smooth museum floors, footbeds meant to mold to your feet, and cushioned padding on the heel to prevent rubbing.

Kenny has slipped on these loafers to head to work, go out to dinner—in general, any situation where she wants to look polished but doesn't necessarily want to put on a heel. Made with a soft, merino wool upper, they come in onyx black, teak herringbone, or ivory, shown above, and have a chunky 1.5-inch sole. Best of all, they are fully machine washable.

Wearing sandals for an extended period of time can be tricky, but former Traveler editor Sarah Ratner swears by good ol' fashioned Birks, with their suede-covered cork-latex footbed that practically molds to your feet over time. The Arizona slides come in every color under the sun and can be purchased in regular or narrow sizes to better fit your feet. Plus, they're easy to match with almost any outfit.

Tevas are the kind of shoe that once you own a pair, you're a fan for life. They'll come in handy on so many occasions—light hikes through Arizona (find more intense hiking shoes here ), sightseeing through dusty roads in Israel, swimming in rocky reservoirs in Austin . The trail sandals, which Flager recommends, have a bit more arch support than the classic style, meaning they'll be even more comfortable both in cities and on trails.

A second Birkenstock option with a ringing endorsement: The Arizona Big Buckle style. “I am very loyal to my Birkenstocks,” says Arikoglu. “I walked 10 miles in one day in Barcelona in them and they never rubbed.”

Another favorite of Kenny's, these Rothy's slides are a welcome update to some of the brand's previous iterations of sandals, which, while cute, offered little when it came to support. “When I put these new slides on from Rothy’s, I immediately knew they will be my go-to summer sandal for beach excursions and vacation days that require a decent amount of walking while also looking put together,” Kenny says. “A durable yet comfortable sandal is always tricky to find, but these have a pretty thick sole and give a lot more support than the flat pair of flip flops I’m always tempted to pack. I went for the neutral beige color that I know will match any midi dress or linen pants I pack this summer.”

Another one of Spurrell's go-to's , these Tevas are slightly less grippy than the Trail sandals, but are still plenty comfortable for all-day wear. Spurrell has worn them on bike rides, long walks, beach days, and out to dinner in New York—proof of their range, and value on your packing list.

It can be nice to have a good pair of flats tucked away in your suitcase for a fancy dinner or evening stroll after a long day in sneakers, especially given how easy they are to pack. We like Birdies' The Starling flats, meant to be a modern take on the classic smoking slipper. They're built to last, and to keep your feet comfortable: Inside, there's seven-layer cushioned footbed with elevated arch support, plus a little extra cushion in the heel to prevent it from rubbing. Order them in suede, faux fur, or velvet fabrics.

While Rothy's makes a classic ballet flat , too, we love the more sophisticated look of the Point Flat. Think about the shoes you wear most when you have to be on your feet all day—you need a pair that gives you good support, while remaining lightweight for both walkability and packing purposes.

Sneakers offer more cushioned insoles than boots, but beware of flat sneakers like Converse and Vans as these work for some but lack arch support and may cause pain for those with high arches. If you find that you need more support but love the style of flat shoes, consider using a pair of insoles if there's a big day of walking planned.

Destination and Materials

Keep in mind the destination. An easy pair of canvas slip-ons will work great for a beach getaway, but if you're going to be out sightseeing you'll want soles that can handle slick pavement and uppers that can get wet without soaking through to your socks.

Materials like synthetic knit-mesh are good for warm places because they're breathable and dry fast, but these materials typically aren't water-resistant, so if you're caught in a city downpour you'll be dealing with wet socks. How We Selected

We considered the different ways people travel and what they look for when packing for weekend getaways or extended trips abroad. Noting pairs that were frequently recommended from reputable travel outlets like Tripadvisor and Travel + Leisure, we gathered a variety of shoes that are comfortable, versatile, and fit for different destinations from mountain hikes to beaches to city plazas.

We pared it down based on hands-on experience with a range of men's shoes for travel and made sure to include different price points and styles. I've personally tried almost all of these shoes on the list except the Crocs (I'm a man of style, after all) and can speak to the comfort, functionality, and versatility no matter your destination.

Blundstone Original 500 Boot for Men

When someone says, “This is the only blank you’ll need,” I typically roll my eyes, because variety is fun—but the Blundstone 500 boots really could be the last I ever wear. They’re lightweight, require no break-in period, and are durable enough to last through years of trips—for me, more than six years.

These boots are comfortable enough for walking the city (although you might want to throw some insoles in there if you have high arches) and they hold up to day hikes. The laid-back style is easy to dress up or down and slip on and off for airport security or giving your feet a break on long car rides.

They're a bit cumbersome to pack so I typically wear them in transit, but if they need to go in a bag you can lay them down and fill them with smaller items like socks, underwear, or tees.

I've worn my 500s walking around city squares in Spain, hiking in Greece, and dirt biking in New Mexico. They're a little beat up after all that wear, but I won't be getting rid of them anytime soon since they're still my go-to travel shoes.

Crocs Classic Clogs for Travel

Crocs used to be house shoes, but you've probably started noticing them in airport terminals and at vacation resorts because they're easy to kick off and comfortable enough for long travel.

The heel strap offers more support and stability than regular sandals, but they're breathable thanks to the perforated design. Even better, they keep your toes covered at the same time, offering more protection from dust or rocks and airline food cart wheels. They work great as water shoes, but make sure to use that heel strap to keep them from floating off your feet.

They're available in almost 40 different colors so you can go as loud or subdued as you want. There's also an all-terrain model if you want to use them on a short hike or as daily shoes. It upgrades the original by adding a rugged sole for extra tread, along with better arch support, while staying lightweight and breathable.

These only thing stopping me from traveling in my Crocs is my personal style hang-up, but if comfort and convenience are at the top of your list, these extremely comfortable shoes are a great option.

Hoka Clifton L Suede Men's Sneakers for Travel

Hoka is known for making great running shoes, but its ingenuity in design and comfort carries over to its lifestyle sneakers as well. The Cliftons are one of the brand's most popular running shoes, and here it's tweaked the model for a comfortable pair you'll want to wear everyday.

It has a high, plushy EVA footbed that feels more comfortable than any other casual shoe I've tried. They feel as lightweight as the Rincon 3s I run in, but offer noticeably more cushioning. The suede uppers and monochromatic details make them easy to wear with jeans, trousers, or shorts, so they're perfect for trips when you want one pair of shoes that can take you from a day of sightseeing to a night on the town.

Their grippy sole doesn't slip on slick crosswalks when I get caught in the rain, but the suede is a drawback on these, since it'll get ruined in the rain. The classic lace-up style may be a hassle for some, but I keep them laced loose and pull them on and off with the heel pull-tab.

Merrell Jungle Moc Slip-On Shoe

Slip-on shoes are convenient for travel, but many options lack support. The Jungle Mocs have the same support you'd expect from tennis shoes, but with a beefed-up outsole and extra cushioning in the heel—perfect for lots of walking.

The leather uppers have two small elastic panels on either side of the instep for pulling them on and off easily, and reviews report you can slip into them “single-footedly” without bending down.

They come with a pair of removable insoles so you can throw in your own if you prefer. The Jungle Mocs give you the convenience you want from a slip-on with the support you need.

These shoes are super lightweight, but the upper’s mesh material isn’t suited for rough terrain, so don’t take these out if you plan on hiking any rocky paths. They’re great for cities or beaches, and their breathability makes them a good option for warm weather.

These fit smaller than my regular sneaker size, so I’d suggest sizing up a half size. Some customers say they prefer the snug fit as they like to wear them without socks, which works since they’re airy and flexible enough to prevent heel rub blisters.

Vans Classic Slip-On Travel Shoes for Men

Many people have their favorite style from Vans’s expansive selection, but the classic slip-on is its most travel-friendly. You can wear these with or without socks, they’re easy to pack, and last a surprisingly long time for their simple construction.

The canvas uppers last a few years, and when it's time to replace them, they won't hurt your wallet too much. If you have high arches, these don't provide enough support for long walking days. They're also narrow, so we don't recommend them for folks with wide feet. Adding some insoles improves support if you want to wear these for the bulk of your trip.

I use mine in transit, but I need more cushion if I'm going to be on my feet sightseeing. They're a great airport shoe and easy to pull on for pit stops while roadtripping, but I prefer more support if I'm wearing them for a long period of time.

Birkenstock Boston Clogs With Super-Grip Sole for Traveling

Birkenstock's Boston clogs are often styled as house shoes or casual wear because they're both comfortable and versatile. Both the leather upper and the cork footbed mold to the wearer's foot over time, providing a custom fit that can be worn with or without socks. This model adds a heavier-duty sole than the original style for added traction and durability.

Bostons are packable and easy to kick on and off, so traveling in them is a breeze. They provide enough support if you plan to land and immediately start knocking out some must-see spots.

The cork footbed does require a short break-in period, so if you want to travel with these, you should wear them around first so the footbed can mold to your foot. Since your heel is exposed, these won’t do well in the rain, so only wear them if you know you’re in for good weather.

Clarks Desert Chukka Boot

Anthony Bourdain typically sported a pair of Clark's desert boots while filming his show Parts Unknown , and the man knew what he was talking about when it came to versatility and comfort.

The soft leather uppers don’t need to be broken in on these boots, and they fold over for easy packing. The simple, two-eyelet lacing gives you a secure fit, but they’re easy to kick off and back on in a snap. The crepe sole—made of coagulated latex—is comfortable and pliable, but doesn’t offer a lot of traction, so I wouldn’t recommend wearing them when it rains.

I have a pair that’s a half-size smaller than my typical size to account for the suede stretching over time, and after breaking in, they fit perfectly and I can wear them comfortably all day long. These aren’t work boots, but they’re surprisingly durable and shockingly lightweight.

I wear mine casually, but I’ve toted them on a couple of camping trips, and after nine years they’re still going strong. I’ve only needed to replace the laces a couple of times, but they are the weakest point of these shoes. If you want something that'll hold up better in rain try the Bushacre chukka as it has a rubber sole and leather uppers.

Teva Hurricane XLT2 Sandals

The Hurricanes are the perfect sandal for adventuring because they can serve as a water shoe, are comfortable for short hikes, and have a grippy traction sole. The straps have a hook-and-loop closure that ensure a secure fit but that are easy to take on and off, and the padded heel strap gives your ankle extra support.

Since your toes are exposed you shouldn't use these for any treacherous terrain where you'll be dealing with jagged rocks, but they're a great choice for day hikes or anything that's around water. They can also easily be thrown into a backpack if you plan to only use them once you get to where you're going.

Allbirds Wool Runners

All-birds uses a eucalyptus fiber for mesh knit uppers that feel smooth on the skin and allow for maximum breathability. They're lightweight for travel and customers say the insoles and midsole provide enough support to be comfortable on your feet all day.

Merino wool is known for it's moisture-wicking and odor-resistant properties so your feet won't overheat. When it comes time to clean them you can simply throw them in the wash and let them air dry. Some customers found that these run small and suggest going up a half size.

But unlike most walking shoes, a solid pair of travel shoes is much more cushioned, and are also easier to pack into your suitcase. That means they come in clutch if you're dashing at the airport, or lounging at the hotel lobby.

What to Consider

The most important factor is a combination of comfort and support. You don't want to wear toasty slippers if you're driving in the car or trekking through the airport, and you don't need to wear some lace-up hiking boots to get the best support possible. Some travel shoes can lean more on comfort (Oofos, Hoka), while others can lean more towards support (Amberjack, Blundstone). The key is to find a happy medium here and get what suits you and the travel situation at hand the best. For example, if you're taking a long flight to another country, it's probably best to aim for more comfort-leaning travel. But if you're making a drive to a weekend getaway, a shoe with more support (and a tougher build) will likely serve as a better choice.

Packability

Unless you plan on wearing a bigger shoe en route to your destination, your travel shoes should be packable. Certain shoes fit better into different sizes of luggage. To assist in the packing process, we assessed which type of travel bag is the ideal minimal size for packing each shoe: Backpack , Carry-On , or Checked Bag . The criteria used were weight, size, and how easily each shoe could be compressed or folded without looking funky once you arrive at your destination. For example, the Amberjack Original is lightweight for a dress shoe but doesn't compress or fold up, so it should go in a carry on bag, at least.

Travel shoes should also be lightweight, and yes, boots can be lightweight too. Dodge any shoe that's got heavy outsoles and avoid materials that are thick and trap heat. Instead, opt for shoes with foam builds and breathable construction.

We consulted with Men's Health writers and editors on the best travel shoes for men in 2024. Experts, including our gear and commerce editor, John Thompson, reviewed a number of travel shoes and evaluated their comfort, weight, and packability. "The dirty little secret of travel, especially air travel, is the true amount of walking involved just getting to the destination," says board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, of Paragon Podiatry . Pledger emphasizes the importance of arch support in your walking shoes. "This helps to maintain the natural alignment of the foot and reduces the risk of arch-related problems like plantar fasciitis," he says. He also recommends a well-cushioned midsole to absorb the impact as you walk; a supportive heel counter for stability; and a flexible outsole, which will allow for natural foot movement.

Follow your instincts as you try on shoes. "The shoe that feels most comfortable in the store is probably the best shoe, whatever style that may be," Isaacson says. "And if it's not comfortable in the store it's not going to magically conform to the foot in the bag on the way home."

With so many shoe brands on the market, your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and foot characteristics. There is no one shoe that will work for every foot.

Pledger's patients, for example, offer consistent positive feedback for shoes from New Balance, ECCO and Merrell. Even still, "I would caution against blindly following brand recommendations without trying on the shoes and assessing their fit and feel," Pledger says.

Trevillion also recommends ECCO and New Balance, adding that KEEN and Salomon also have great options for challenging terrain. These brands are all praised by travelers worldwide, but don't be discouraged if the shoes that work for others just don't fit your shoe preferences. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to wear them, so try out different options if you need to and discover what features suit you best.

When searching for your perfect walking shoe, look at the following:

• Outsole: This is the bottom of the shoe that will have direct contact with the surface you are walking on. It should be flexible and shock-absorbing. A sturdier outsole will provide more stability for a variety of pavements.
• Insole: This is the interior bottom of the shoe. You'll want a comfortable fabric to prevent your foot from rubbing, as well as cushioning and support.

Smart travelers know the value of great shoes. When you’re on your feet all day — whether it’s hiking a trail or walking neighborhoods in a new city — your footwear can make an enormous difference. That’s why I’m here to report on the best men’s and women’s travel shoes for walking all day.

I’m a minimalist and typically only take one or two pairs of shoes on the road. My ideal travel shoes are stylish, lightweight, and comfortable all day long. In the summer, I look for more breathable and lightweight shoes, and in winter, I crave warmth and durability.

I’ve worked at REI and traveled extensively in Europe for business and personal endeavors, so I know a thing or two about footwear that’s built for walking all day. I’m happy to share my findings on such brands as Allbirds, Lems, Xero, SeaVees, and Blundstone, as these companies make some truly stellar kicks.

This list includes sneakers, loafers, slip-ons, athletic shoes, and a few sandals that I’ve evaluated for comfort, style, packability, and other key factors.

Best All-Around Allbirds Tree Runners

I’m a huge fan of the Allbirds Tree Runners. They come in a wide variety of colors, and you’ll love their breathability and packability. You’ll have no problem squishing them down flat and tying them to the side of your backpack or even stuffing them into the water bottle pocket.

I criss-crossed Europe in my Allbirds and washed them several times. They held up great! The best thing about Allbirds is how lightweight they are. They’re perfect for walking all day, thanks to the stretchy material that molds to your feet.

If you’re looking for responsibly sourced and comfortable all-day shoes, I can highly recommend the Allbirds.

Best Slip-Ons SeaVees Huntington Middie

Want a slightly more stylish option than the Allbirds? The SeaVees Huntington Middie is my favorite slip-on shoe for travel. The high top and suede material make them easy to dress up or down.

SeaVees are perfect travel companions. I love the simple, minimalistic look they bring to any outfit, so they look great day and night.

Plus, they’re super comfortable and easy to slip on and off. Quite a few online reviewers say SeaVees aren’t just a travel shoe but also a go-to everyday casual shoe.

Zero-Drop Barefoot Shoes Lems Primal Zen

I recommend the Lems Primal Zens for the zero-drop traveler because they’re lightweight, versatile, and minimalist, making them excellent travel shoes.

Travel is hard on the body, and some people prefer the benefits of a zero-drop shoe with the natural fit and feel that promotes healthy walking habits. In comparison, traditional shoes can produce an unnatural gait that increases the likelihood of injury.

Ultra-Lightweight & Packable Slip-Ons Xero Sunrise

The Xero Sunrise slip-ons are the lightest and most packable shoe on this list. Weighing in at a ridiculous 5.6 ounces each (men’s size medium), these were designed for those who want a comfortable shoe to slide into when it’s time to chill.

Though I don’t recommend climbing a mountain in these or donning them during a 30,000-step marathon around the city, I do think they’d work perfectly for a relaxing night on the town, strolling around a farmers market, or kicking your feet up by the pool.

From experience, I can tell you these are about as comfortable, cozy, and convenient as travel shoes come these days. For my more relaxed trips, they’ll make it into my travel bag every single time.

Trail Running Shoes Salomon Wander

The Salomon Wander is made for trail running but also works quite well as a travel shoe. They’re versatile for active travelers who like to walk, run, and hike all day, every day.

These shoes have ample cushion that makes long walks in the city easier on your knees, but they aren’t quite as stylish as some and don’t dress up as easily.

Salomon is a trusted and well-reviewed brand, and their Wander is a fine addition to their respected product line. If you spend all day on your feet, look no further.

Stylish Hiking Shoes Merrell Burnt Rock

I love the Merrell Burnt Rock because they’re so stylish. These are ideal for travelers who like to hit the trail occasionally but also know they’ll spend most of their time in the city.

Men’s Dress Shoes Florsheim Oxford

Why have I included them on this list? Not only are they simple and packable, but they’re designed to be washed. I’ve had mine for years, and even after several washes, they look as good as new.

While they cost a bit more, the material quality and durability are well worth the price. For businesswomen on their feet all day, these are the stylish flats you’ve been wanting.

Slip-On Chelsea Boots Blundstone 550

These are my go-to winter travel shoes — versatile and stylish slip-on Chelsea boots that are easy to love. Yes, they’re one of the more expensive options here, but well worth the investment.

If I was traveling and could only bring one pair of shoes, I’d bring these. I can work, hike, or walk all day in them with no problem. Compared to the Lems, the Blundstone 550 are more durable and rugged. They do get a bit hot in warmer climates, so consider the low cuts.

Caution: Blundstone is an Australian brand, and AU and US sizes differ slightly. For example, at REI the boot size on the box is AU sizing but the size selection tool on the website is US sizing. Make sure you’re ordering the right size.

Minimalist Barefoot Sandals Luna Oso Flaco Winged Edition

If you’re traveling to a warm climate and have little need to dress up, I’d recommend the Luna Oso Flaco. In another post, I chose these as the top minimalist barefoot sandal , due to their many excellent qualities for active travelers on the go.

Weighing under one pound per pair, these are lightweight as well as super-compact. You’ll barely notice them in your suitcase or backpack.

The Oso Flaco sandals are the best zero-drop option for travelers who want to connect with the earth. Their lightweight and rugged sole makes them a great choice for your adventures.

Classy Slide-On Sandals Birkenstock Arizona

Our favorite versatile slide-on sandals are the Birkenstock Arizonas. These are a classic style that has transitioned from dorky to stylish over the years.

I sometimes travel in summer with friends who also wear these shoes. We all agree that they’re ultra-comfortable and perfect for all-day treks in the city. Whether you wake up in hostels or highrise hotels, these are reliable urban cruisers.

One caveat, however: on hot, sweaty days in these sandals, my feet sometimes get blisters, so I’ll usually opt for sneakers instead. Other than that, I love my Birkenstocks for traveling.

Unbreakable Flip-Flops Rainbow Double Layer

Rainbows are flip-flops built for the long haul. But be sure to break these in before your trip. They may be uncomfortable at first, but once they mold to your feet, you’ll never want to take them off.

I know people who have worn these for years and swear by them. As with some of the other shoes on this list, these are quite flat and packable. The two shoes sandwiched together are about the thickness of a paperback book.

Hiking Sandals Teva Universal

Want a more substantial and supportive sandal than the Bedrocks? I’d point you to the Teva Universal Sandal — versatile, classic, and more affordable.

These come in several neutral colors that simplify dress-up. I had a pair with copper-colored straps that paired easily with dresses I wore for a summer in Italy.

Teva Universals are lightweight and can be easily stowed. Save space by using their Velcro straps to fasten them to the outside of your backpack.

Criteria for Travel Shoes & Sandals

This list reflects several key factors you should consider before packing your suitcase with travel shoes. Some may be more relevant than others, based on your travel needs.

No matter where you’re going, your shoes must always be comfortable, especially when the steps start to pile up. Treat your feet right by carefully considering the cushioning and breathability.

An ill-fitting pair of shoes can be distracting and even painful at times, so do your do diligence as you research shoes, read reviews, and reference the sizing guide to ensure you get the right fit.

Styling is important if a shoe is to be truly versatile. I lean more towards minimalist sneakers if I’ll be going to museums all day followed by a relaxing dinner at night. Save space in your suitcase by packing a style that complements as many of your outfits and activities as possible.

We’ve done our best to pick a wide array of shoes that will look good on anyone, and have strayed away from the dorky Rick Steves dad sneakers of the past. (Sorry, Rick.)

Laced vs. Slip-On

I often pack one pair of laced and one pair of slip-on shoes for ease of use and comfort (slip-ons) and athletic performance (laced). There are other styles to consider, too, like boots and sandals, so do your research and choose what’s best for you.

I usually wear my slip-ons for more leisurely activities and wear laced kicks for more high-intensity activities that call for more foot and ankle support.

Breathability

When you’re a high-intensity traveler who puts in a lot of steps , you need a set of footwear that’ll release the body heat that your feet produce. Otherwise, you’re looking at clammy, sweaty feet that are prone to blisters. Gross.

We did our best to pick breathable shoes that will keep your feet dry and fresh as you pile up the miles, so long as you match them up with a capable pair of travel or hiking socks .

Have you ever had a pair of cheap shoes crap out on you midway through a trip? I haven’t, but I can imagine it’d be quite the pain in the butt to replace shoes in a foreign land. I don’t have such problems with my footwear since I always pick travel shoes that are durable and built for the long haul.

To ensure you buy a pair of durable shoes, read reviews, keep a close eye on the materials used to produce them, and only buy well-reviewed products from trusted brands.

Packability

As a minimalist traveler, packability is one of my top priorities. I wear my bulkiest shoes on the airplane while packing my lighter and more compact pair, as well as my sandals.

Saving space in your minimalist travel pack is a top consideration when hitting the road, so pick shoes that’ll pack down small if you intend on traveling light .

Comfort Vs Fashion (Yes, You Can Have Both)

The average traveler walks 6-12+ miles a day while visiting urban destinations like Paris, London, Rome, Berlin, NYC, etc. I think I hit about 14 miles in a day during my last trip to Paris.

Even standing for a few hours at a museum can be a killer on your feet. And as soon as your feet start hurting, the rest of your body quickly follows. So comfort should be your top priority.

BUT SNEAKERS ARE SUPER POPULAR!

Yes, even the fashionable Parisians and Italians and New Yorkers wear sneakers. But they wear cool sneakers (which I’ll cover in-depth throughout this article). Just pair your cool sneakers with a well-fitting outfit and you’ll be good to go.

But, at the end of the day, you should always choose comfort over style.

NOTE: I’ve also covered some comfortable and stylish waterproof/weather-resistant footwear options in this guide if you’re traveling during the rainy/winter seasons.

I’ve done plenty of trips to Europe where I just brought one pair of shoes but I think most men can easily get away with two pairs.

I recommend one pair of comfortable sneakers that you’ll use during the day as you explore and then a pair of sleeker, more minimalist leather sneakers for the evening.

Personally, I wouldn’t bother with higher-end dress shoes unless you’re a luxury-level traveler (which I assume you’re not if you’re reading this website).

The Best Men’s Travel Shoes and Sneakers

Alright fellas, let’s start off with my picks for the best athletic-inspired (aka “lifestyle”) shoes/sneakers.

As I mentioned previously, these will be your main pair of shoes that you’ll wear 90% of the time so they need to be comfortable. If you want maximum comfort, you might consider full-on legit running/walking shoes (but you might have to give up some “fashion” points.)

And all the sneakers listed below are very popular so you’ll see tons of locals wearing them (i.e. so you won’t look like a “tourist”). But, honestly, any pair of cool sneakers will work perfectly.

New Balance 574

When it comes to a pair of shoes for travel, you can’t go wrong with the classic New Balance 574 for comfort and style. They come in multiple colors so you can find something that fits your style and they’re one of the more affordable shoes on the market. New Balance also offers a few different variations on the 574 so you can find them in various materials and color combinations.

These do run small so they recommend going up a size.

New Balance 237

The New Balance 237 is a great choice if you’re looking for a travel sneaker with a bit more subdued retro styling than the 327—although it does still come in a few bold colorways.

New Balance 327

The New Balance 327 is a redesign of their 1970s classic running shoe and it’s been a huge hit for sneakerheads—it’s one of my favorite travel shoes. The New Balance 327 is comfortable, stylish, and “different-looking” without being too “different”.

The 327 comes in a ton of different materials and colorways so you can go subtle with your styling or go super bold.

New Balance 990

The New Balance 990 is the classic “it’s kinda ugly but it’s also actually cool and it’s so comfortable I don’t want to take it off” walking shoe from New Balance. People love this shoe (it’s one of New Balance’s highest-rated shoes) and it’s a favorite for many young and fashionable urbanites—it has also found its way into many runways and fashion weeks. This is a great men’s travel shoe if you have any kind of foot issues.

Nike Air Pegasus 83

The Nike Air Pegasus 83 is a 1980s retro-style running/lifestyle shoe that has cool looks and has extra cushioning in the soles thanks to its Nike Air technology. This shoe strikes a nice balance of having plenty of support while also staying fairly minimalist.

Nike Air Max 90

The Nike Air Max 90 is a much-loved sneakerhead classic that’s super comfortable and comes in a ton of different colorways. It’s a bit chunkier than a lot of other sneakers on this list but so this pair is more for someone who wants to show off their shoes.

Nike Air Max Pre-Day

The Nike Air Max Pre-Day is a cool mix of a 70/80’s style running shoe that’s paired with a modern Nike Air sole. It has a lot of bounce in the heel thanks to the dual airbags. It also comes in a large variety of colors that range from subdued to attention-grabbing.

Nike Waffle Trainer 2

The Nike Waffle Trainer 2 is another retro throwback sneaker with minimalist styling that can be worn casually or even dressed up a bit. The sole on the Nike Waffle Trainer 2 isn’t super thick so it doesn’t have quite as much cushioning and support as many of the other shoes in the section.

Adidas Ultraboost

The Adidas ULTRABOOST is a legit running shoe that is also one of the most popular street-style sneakers thanks to its comfortable sock-like upper and ultra-cushioning UltraBoost foam soles. A lot of people say these are some of the most comfortable shoes on the market so they make a great pair of travel shoes.

Nike ACG Lowcate

The Nike ACG Lowcate is a retro-inspired hiking sneaker that also looks good on the streets. Its mixed material upper combines durability with easy styling while the heavy-duty traction pattern on the rubber outsole grips slick terrain. I’d say this is a good option for shoulder seasons when temperatures won’t be too warm but you also might run into some slippery streets.

ALLBIRDS TREE DASHERS 2

The Allbirds Tree Dashers 2 is a super comfortable walking/running shoe offered by Allbirds that has a ton of support and cushioning. And while the Tree Dasher 2 isn’t as sleek or minimalist as some of Allbirds other offerings, this is the Allbirds model you want if you’re looking for maximum comfort while traveling. THE BEST LOW-PROFILE TRAVEL SHOES FOR MEN

A sleeker, low-profile sneaker makes a great second pair of travel shoes because they can be dressed up a bit more while still being casual and comfortable.

However, minimalist shoes can sometimes lack arch support and cushioning so adding an insole can often help boost their comfort—but you still might not want to wear these all day.

Nike Killshot

Another great white minimalist leather travel sneaker is the Nike Killshot . These versatile retro tennis sneakers come in multiple accent colors and look good with a variety of outfits.

Nike Blazer Low

The Nike Blazer Low is another popular low-profile vintage sneaker that features crisp leather on the upper with soft suede accents. It’s a nice alternative to the Nike Killshot.

Nike Waffle One Leather and Nike Waffle One

The Nike Waffle line of shoes is another great low-profile sneaker that mixes retro style with a few modern design tweaks like the angular TPU heel clip.

There are multiple variations of the Nike Waffle. The Nike Waffle Leather has a fully leather upper so it has more classical styling. The Nike Waffle SE has a few options that have a mesh upper that allows your feet to breathe in the summer heat (and it looks cool).

New Balance Numeric Sneakers

New Balance’s skateboarding “Numeric” line of sneakers is a nice option if you’re looking for something sturdy and low-profile. They offer a number of colorways and styles.

ALLBIRDS WOOL RUNNERS & TREE RUNNERS

Known around the internet as the “most comfortable shoes in the world,” the Allbirds Wool Runners & Tree Runners are the flagship models in the Allbirds lineup—I’ve written extensively about Allbirds so check out our  Allbirds Comparison guide to get a better idea about their full offering.

Personally, I’m a big fan of Allbirds shoes and think they make a great travel shoe option thanks to their minimalist styling and comfort.

Adidas Stan Smiths

The Adidas Stan Smiths is the undisputed “looks good with everything” sneakers and you’ll literally see them on the feet of everyone from 13-year-olds to fashionable 50-year-old Europeans. You’ll want to break them in first (plus they look best with a little wear and tear) and a pair of insoles will help with their comfort.

THE BEST MEN’S WATERPROOF & WEATHER-RESISTANT SHOES FOR TRAVEL

Traveling during the winter and rainy seasons calls for shoes that are either waterproof or highly weather resistant. Some people opt for boots but I think they’re often too bulky unless you’re traveling in snowy or extra-rainy conditions.

That’s why I’m a huge fan of waterproof/weather-resistant sneakers. As an added bonus, these kinds of shoes offer legit running-shoe comfort and they’re often fairly stylish so you can wear them all day.

Important Note: All waterproof and weather-resistant shoes will suffer from some breathability issues (some more than others) so these shoes will be hotter and your feet will get more sweaty—which leads to smelly feet. I highly recommend buying socks that are anti-odor and moisture-wicking. It’s also helpful to carry an extra pair with you and switch halfway through the day.

New Balance GTX Shoes

The New Balance “GTX” line of GORE-TEX sneakers are weather-resistant so they work well in rainy/snowy urban environments. They typically have a few trail-running shoe options that will offer a lot of support and a GTX version of their lifestyle sneakers.

NIKE AIR ZOOM PEGASUS SHIELD

The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus is a water-resistant version of the Pegasus. And while it’s not as waterproof as the Pegasus Trail GORE-TEX (see below), it is more breathable so it might be a better option if you’re only expecting light rain.

NIKE PEGASUS TRAIL GORE-TEX

The Nike Pegasus Trail is a beefed-up version of the classic Nike Pegasus running shoe with added GORE-TEX weather resistance so it will keep your feet comfortable while also keeping out the elements. The Pegasus Trail also comes in a variety of colorways so you can go bold or more low-key. This is a great travel shoe if you’re expecting rain and light snow.

Nike React SFB Carbon

If you’re looking for a travel shoe that’s more “beefy” then check out the Nike React SFB Carbon—it’s basically as tough as a tactical boot but it has the comfort and similar styling as a sneaker. And it comes with a super comfortable Nike React cushioning sole and a full-length carbon plate to give it extra stability.

ADIDAS ULTRABOOST COLD.RDY

The Adidas ULTRABOOST COLD.RDY is another great choice if you want ULTRABOOST comfort paired with weather resistance.

Allbirds Wool Runners Mizzles and Wool Dasher Mizzles

For a more casual look, check out the Allbirds Wool Runners Mizzles—they’re warm and comfortable while offering a water-resistant lining and great arch support. Some people also recommend spraying them with a water-repellent spray for extra protection but these aren’t for crazy rain or anything.

The Allbirds Wool Dasher Mizzles is a water-resistant version of the Allbirds Wool Dasher running shoe. Since these are true running shoes, they offer a lot of cushioning and support so wearing them all day won’t be an issue.

Most Supportive Men’s Walking Shoes For Travel

For maximum comfort and support, you can’t beat a legit pair of walking/running shoes to keep your feet (and entire body) happy. Yes, you might have to sacrifice some style, but I’ve managed some find some great options that can actually look fairly fashionable.

NIKE REACT INFINITY RUN FLYKNIT

Another awesome sneaker is the  Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit  which features top-of-the-line React Foam soles that give maximum cushion and the Flyknit material makes the shoe extra lightweight.

And while these shoes are legit running shoes, they also come in a range of colorways so they’re still stylish enough to look good when slightly dressed up.

NIKE PEGASUS

The legendary Nike Pegasus  is Nike’s workhorse running shoe and it’s been the brand’s most popular running sneaker for years—so it is a great option if you’re looking for high comfort, stability, and cushioning as you travel. The Pegasus comes in multiple colors and configurations so you can find something to suit your style.

New Balance Shoes with Fresh Foam

Any New Balance with their Fresh Foam soles will offer a ton of support and cushioning. For max cushioning check out the  New Balance 1080 . If you’re looking for a little less bulk, check out the  New Balance 880  and  New Balance 860 . As an added bonus, most New Balance shoes come in wide and narrow sizes—which is rare for most brands.

Other Products To Help Keep Your Feet Comfortable While Travelling

Here are a few other things you might want to pick up to help keep your feet comfortable during your travels.

Quality socks have a huge impact on the comfort of your feet as they can help stop blisters and foot odor. The main rule is to avoid cotton.

I recommend lightweight wool or wool/synthetic socks from Bombas , Smartwool , and Darn Tough since the addition of wool helps prevent odors. Quality running socks are also a good option.

Insoles can be helpful if you have foot issues or if you’re wearing a pair of low-profile sneakers like Nike Killshots. I recommend testing out your shoes for a couple of weeks before your trip to see if adding insoles will help. You can find plenty of insole options that cater to different food issues on Amazon and Zappos .

Band-Aids and Anti-Blister Products

It’s always smart to pack some anti-blister bandages or similar products just in case your shoes start giving you a blister. There are multiple types of anti-blister bandages available on Amazon .

Best Travel Shoes of 2023

It’s that time again! Summer is rapidly approaching and I know many of you are wondering about my picks for the best travel shoes of 2023.  Below are some of my favorites and some of the top shoe recommendations from the Adventures with Sarah community.  My main criteria are weight, comfort and a bit of style. If your favorites aren’t listed let us know in the comments!

Top Sandal Picks

In the heat of summer, we all want sandals that will keep our feet cool, provide support, and look good.  These are my picks to tick all the boxes.

These sandals are still a favorite – they have a little wedge so they dress up nicely for dinner but, they are constructed of a material that is water friendly so, they can double as a beach shoe. Beware, though, they are going extinct!

Dansko Rowan

A sizing change made by Dansko a few years ago means that I can no longer find their shoes to fit me but, they still make great shoes.  They are stylish and supportive – many of my tour guide friends swear by them.

Aetrex Gabby Sandal

A newcomer on the scene, this sandal is recommended by the Adventures with Sarah community for extra support by folks who have high arches or plantar fasciitis.

Other Sandals that I Recommend

Naot Dorith – These are super lightweight and have a nice molded footbed, you’ll see these on my feet this summer.

Taos Trulie – I have been wearing these for a couple of seasons and they look as good as new. The adjustable straps are great for anyone who has feet that swell.

Sketchers Reggae Slim – Another pair that I’ve been wearing for a couple of years, they aren’t super light but are stretchy and ok for water activities.

Sorel Kinetic – I don’t personally own these but some of my most stylish guests on tours rave about them, and with the thick sole, shorter women seem to love them.

Olukai Flip Flop – I bought these on a trip to Hawaii last year, and they have become a favorite. There are plenty of sizes, up to Men’s 14, and while not the lightest shoe, they are super durable.

Teva Tirra – These are my pick for active sandals, as Tevas seem to never die. I take them to Thailand and swim in them, hike in them, and wear them around town. My only problem with them is they get stinky after a while…or maybe that’s just me. Bonus: up to women’s size 12!

Travel Shoes – Sneakers

I recommend at least two pairs of shoes for all travel, either sneakers and walking shoes or sneakers and sandals. Neutral colors are best for travel.

All Birds Wool Runners

I’m shifting to natural fabrics, to reduce plastic used and also the health of my skin.  They are better for travel, naturally, and are comfortable for miles.

Ecco Soft 7 Sneaker

Recommended by my friend and colleague, Lisa Anderson, these sneakers are supportive and stylish.

Skechers Flex

Lightweight, comfortable sneakers for days that need more than a sandal. Let’s be honest, Skechers are not extremely stylish and have a short lifespan, but geez, they are comfortable. Local guides who tour for 10 hours a day often wear them.

Shoes for Winter or Wet Weather Travel

It may be summer now but, not every trip takes place in summer or to perennially sunny destinations.  These shoes will help you make it through our winter weather or keep you dry and warm in your travels.

All Birds Mizzles

Yes, these shoes are wool and yes, they are water-repellent.  They provide the same natural material benefits of the Wool Runners but, have been coated to repel water and keep your feet cozy.  Love them for walks at home in the winter or for trekking around Iceland.

Columbia Newton Ridge Waterproof Boot

Bought recently for a trip to Iceland, these are bulky but not too heavy for a hiking boot. They were sturdy, cozy, and kept my feet dry. Perfect for outdoor winter adventures.

Blundstone Classic Chelsea Boots

Recommended by fans these boots will keep your feet warm and dry when you’re traveling (or traveling around your hometown) in wet and wintry weather.

Extended Size Picks

If you are like me and need shoes in a size that is considered larger than normal for the US these shoes offer comfort, style and support in our sizes.

All Birds women’s sizes go up to 11 and men’s sizes go up to 14, in a range of colors. I tend to buy the men’s sizes as they are all the same.

New Balance Fresh Foam

This brand is known for inclusive sizing, particularly for men’s shoes. This particular model is lightweight for a good, basic travel shoe.

This brand is perfect for odd sizes and problematic feet. They have narrow up to XWide, and also cater to plantar fasciitis.

Shoes for Special Concerns

Do you need extra support in your shoes because you suffer from plantar fasciitis? Maybe you have bunions? These shoes could help you on your travels.

Cobb Hill Women’s Hollywood 4 Strap Flat Sandal

These stylish sandals come in narrow sizes.

Hoka Bondi 8

These shoes are neither sleek nor inexpensive but, they do provide extra cushion and support to people who need it.

On Men’s Cloud 5 Sneakers

Another option for those needing a bit more support in walking shoes that was recommended by our Adventures with Sarah community.  I recently bought a pair and have enjoyed them, even if the styling is a bit odd.

Ecco Offroad sandals for women. Similar to the Teva and Merril. I wear a size 11. For althetic style shoes – Saucony – they have a longer toe cage and a better arch for bigger feet. Compression socks keep me standing and walking longer. Naot are lovely, but narrow in the front and a bit short if your toes are longer. I have a couple of pair for dress. Also, Birkenstock, find the right size and style for what you need.

Best Approach Shoes of 2023

From lightweight models to tough footwear for technical climbing and the alpine, we break down the year’s top approach shoes.

Combining the features of hiking shoes, climbing slippers, and even mountaineering boots, approach shoes are in a category of their own. For climbers, they’re an essential piece of footwear that provides stability and traction on rock but comfort for miles on the trail. And because approaches can take on so many different forms—from walking to the crag to scrambling fourth or fifth class or embarking on a multi-day slog—approach shoes are a diverse bunch. Below we break down the top approach shoes of 2023, including comfortable crag and trail shoes, nimble climbers, and mid-height waterproof models. Best Overall Approach Shoe

1. la sportiva tx4 ($159).

If you climb a lot of routes that have walk-off descents, do yourself a favor and get a really lightweight approach shoe. Whether you’re toting your approach shoes on your harness or carrying them in your backpack, the difference of a few ounces (and some bulk) can make a world of difference on a long climb. Within this category, the Black Diamond Circuit is an easy go-to option: It’s super lightweight at just over a pound for the pair, has a webbing loop at the rear for carabiner attachment, and offers decent performance with BD’s BlackLabel-Street sticky rubber and a wrap-around rubber rand at the toe. And when you’re at the crag, the heel folds down for easy slip-on convenience.

Of course there’s a tipping point with a shoe like this—while it will get the job done in areas with relatively short approaches (like Joshua Tree or Squamish), you’ll likely want more protection, cushion, and traction in mountainous zones or for involved hikes like those in Red Rock. Arc’teryx’s Norvan SL 3  ($160) is an intriguing alternative that we see a lot of climbers (especially in Squamish) use: It’s part of the brand’s running shoe lineup but is a secret weapon for approaching and descending, with a ridiculously low 12-ounce weight (for the pair), Vibram Megagrip outsole, and built-in carabiner clip-in points at each heel. Finally, the La Sportiva TX2 Evo (below) is another popular lightweight option. But at just $110, the Black Diamond Circuit is in a league of its own in terms of value and—like the Session below—looks pretty good around town, too. Best Approach Shoe for Technical Scrambling

3. la sportiva tx guide ($179).

If you’ve been around climbing for long enough, chances are you remember the La Sportiva Ganda. A favorite of experienced climbers and guides, the streamlined Ganda was the shoe to wear while climbing 5th-class rock. Now, after a multi-year hiatus, the TX Guide brings a high-tech approach shoe back into Sportiva’s lineup, and we like it a lot. Compared to the TX4 above, the Guide is lighter, leaner and more sensitive, and stickier too—in other words, it’s a far better option for technical climbing and scrambling. Remarkably, it’s also soft and flexible (touted as having the cushioning of a mountain runner), which is great for comfort and speed on the trail.

It’s important to note that the TX Guide is built on a different last than other models in the TX lineup, which is considerably narrower in the toe box. Further, you do give up some durability with the mesh upper (Sportiva also makes a slightly heavier leather version ), and the Guide’s sticky sole won’t hold up quite as well as stiffer rubber compounds. But these tradeoffs make it wildly impressive on technical rock: We forgot to pack our climbing shoes for a six-pitch 5.10+ in Washington State’s alpine, and the Guide proved to be a surprisingly capable substitute. Not everyone needs such a high-performance shoe (or will want to pay for it either), but if you’re inclined to long days of mountain scrambling with some technical climbing and fast hiking mixed in, the TX Guide is our top choice this year.  See the Men's La Sportiva TX Guide   See the Women's La Sportiva TX Guide

Best Approach Shoe/Trail Runner Hybrid

4.  la sportiva ultra raptor ii ($165).

More and more climbers are turning to trail running shoes, and the trend makes sense: They’re decently lightweight, comfortable for miles of hiking, and provide serviceable traction on rock. Compared to rigid and clunky approach shoes, they’re also a lot easier on your feet, especially during long outings. And while it’s true that you can get by with any old pair for short and easy approaches, you’ll want a fairly beefed-up trail runner for mountain terrain. The Ultra Raptor—one of the most longstanding shoes in Sportiva’s mountain running category—sticks close to this definition and offers a nice solution for those traveling fast and light.

One of our favorite features of the Ultra Raptor II is its Vibram FriXion XF 2.0 outsole (aka FriXion white), which offers incredible traction on rock—arguably more than the MegaGrip used in the TX series. Alongside the generous protection at the toe and heel, you also get running-shoe levels of cushion and flexibility, which is great for long days on the trail. We’ve used the Sportiva for missions that include running, off-trail travel, glacier crossings (it pairs well with the popular Petzl Leopard crampon), and low fifth-class scrambling, and found it to be an incredibly capable tool for the job. Keep in mind that you give up a good deal of durability (we don’t love the shoe for crack climbing), and the breathable mesh upper won’t protect your feet from cold and wind quite like leather.   Best Approach Shoe for Mountain Terrain

5. scarpa mescalito ($229).

We’ve included a lot of La Sportiva shoes in our top picks but would be remiss to overlook the other Italian footwear giant: Scarpa. Their popular Mescalto is purpose-built to tackle demanding mountain objectives, bucking the lightweight trend with a durable suede upper, generous wraparound rand, and supportive TPU shank. Underfoot, the Vibram Megagrip sole features rounded rectangular lugs that are versatile for both rock and soft terrain, along with a climbing zone at the front for precision while edging and smearing on rock. It all adds up to one seriously tough shoe that offers standout support and protection for your feet, whether you’re picking your way across a talus field or kicking steps up steep snow.  

The Mescalito is a go-to choice for mountain guides and serious climbers who get out a lot, but it’s not our recommendation for most climbers. First, at $229, it’s one of the most expensive shoes here, and you don’t get the Gore-Tex waterproofing of models like the Salewa MTN Trainer or TX4 Mid below (although you can treat the suede with a waterproof finish). Further, the Mescalito can feel brick-like and heavy on casual, on-trail approaches, and the jack-of-all-trades tread isn’t particularly aggressive on loose terrain like mud, snow, and scree. Best Approach Shoe with Everyday Appeal

6. black diamond session ($130).

Approach shoes have become so ubiquitous amongst climbers that it’s common to see them not just at the crag, but at the brewery, the gym, and everywhere in between. But models like the TX4 above and Mtn Trainer below can be fairly overbuilt (read: uncomfortable) for daily use. Black Diamond’s Session, on the other hand, is built with casual intentions, combining urban styling and a soft, bootie-like upper with all the features we look for in an approach shoe. The result is a wildly comfortable and easy-wearing shoe that both looks good and plays hard. And in addition to the original knit version featured here, Black Diamond also offers the shoe in a more hardwearing suede model .

One of our favorite features of the Session is the heel, which includes an elastic stretch that makes the shoe easy to pull on and off without bothering with the laces. The heel also folds down for use as a slip-on, which is a great feature for gym climbing, bouldering, and myriad around-home uses. And the Session holds its own among approach shoes too, with a durable rubber sole, protective toe caps, and webbing loops at the heel for tagging up a climb. Keep in mind that Black Diamond’s BlackLabel-Street rubber is designed for use on pavement, so the Session is built to last but offers less grip on rock than more performance-oriented shoes. Best of the Rest

7. arc’teryx konseal fl 2 ($145).

British Columbia-based Arc’teryx is a top performer when it comes to technical mountain gear and apparel, and their Konseal FL approach shoe is case in point. Similar to the La Sportiva TX Guide above, the Konseal FL 2 features a hybrid design that combines the support, traction, and close fit of an approach shoe with the agility and comfort of a trail runner. The net result is an excellent all-rounder for alpine missions that involve a mix of trail miles, cross-country travel, and scrambling. You get a Vibram Megagrip sole similar to that on La Sportiva’s TX4, along with an updated lug pattern that offers even better performance across a variety of terrain. Tack on a springy foam heel, mesh upper (more breathable and pliable in the “2”), and low 1-pound-5.8-ounce weight, and the Konseal is nimbler and lighter than most approach shoes here. 

Despite the Konseal FL’s thoughtful construction, there are still inherent downsides in going with such a lightweight design. We’ve been fairly impressed with the mesh upper throughout testing (especially compared to the Sportiva TX3), but it doesn’t offer the same durability, waterproofing, or precise fit as a leather shoe. Further, the streamlined toe box might feel too narrow for some (especially after miles of hiking). But for up-and-over ascents and mountain scrambling, it’s hard to beat the mix of weight and performance. Finally, it’s worth noting that the Konseal is also available in a leather GTX model ($220), which is significantly heavier (1 lb. 12 oz.) but very durable and protective. 8. Scarpa Crux II ($159)

The Crux is Scarpa’s classic all-around approach shoe, built to handle miles of hiking and the occasional off-trail scramble. With a suede upper and Kevlar webbing that connects the laces to the midfoot, you get the snug fit of a leather shoe but without too much stretch—in our experience, the Crux has a lot more structure than the similarly intentioned La Sportiva Boulder X below. And while a generous dose of cushioning underfoot means the Crux isn’t the strongest edging platform, it’s a very comfortable hiking shoe and has performed well for us on everything from heinous side-hill slogs to moderate climbs such as the classic Wolf’s Head in the Wind River Range.

In terms of outsoles, we give the edge to the dotted design of the La Sportiva TX4 above, which grips better to rock and is stiff enough to provide a stable platform on small edges. But the Crux’s sharp tread bites into wet leaves and snow, and as we mentioned above, the relatively flexible and cushioned sole is by far the more comfortable pick for miles of easy trail hiking. However, at 13.4 ounces per shoe, the Scarpa can’t match the more nimble feel of the modern competition. 9.  Black Diamond Mission LT ($145)

Black Diamond’s approach shoe lineup is giving La Sportiva and Scarpa a run for their money, with a growing assortment of shoes to meet climbers’ various demands. The versatile Mission LT is a breathable, comfortable workhorse made for long days of hiking and easy rock scrambling. On the bottom of the shoe, you get a rockered sole (great for ease of walking) and a tread that balances rock traction in the forefoot with sharper lugs in the back for wet and loose terrain. We also love the Mission LT’s one-piece EnduroKnit upper and have been surprised with its durability (especially compared to the mesh TX3), although you’ll get a bit more abrasion resistance and water resistance with the Konseal FL’s ripstop mesh (one of our favorite synthetic uppers).

One unique design feature of the Mission LT is its sock-like liner, which we’ve come to both love and hate. On one hand, you get a close fit and great overall protection from sand and debris. The downside, however, is that the shoe is a bear to get on, giving us pause in wearing it on shorter missions to the crag or boulders. But for full days of hiking when you’re not removing your shoes between every pitch, the Mission LT shines and is more trail-ready than most. Further, at a competitive 1-pound-6-ounce weight, it’s a great shoe to throw in your backpack or attach to your harness for the long walk down. 10.  La Sportiva TX2 Evo ($159)

The TX2 Evo is not only the lightest member of the La Sportiva TX family—it’s one of the lightest models on our list. At just 10.2 ounces per shoe, the minimalist design packs in a surprising number of thoughtful features. The flat sole, rigid toe box, and sticky Vibram Idrogrip rubber lend themselves to excellent performance on technical rock, and you get a snug fit by way of the pliable knit upper and customizable lacing system. Breathability is excellent for hot summer days, and the TX2 will also drain and dry quickly following a river crossing. And with an elastic loop that combines the shoes for streamlined carry on your harness, they’re our hands-down favorite for hauling up climbs with walk-off descents. 

The knock against the TX2 Evo is that it isn’t particularly durable, especially when pushed to its limits. It’s true that Sportiva designed the latest Evo version to be easily resoled, but in our experience with the first-gen TX2, the upper was the first component to fail. Further, with a flat sole and little in the way of support or cushion, the shoe falls short for long days on the trail. But for short approaches, easy scrambles, and toting up rock climbs, it doesn’t get much better. For a more durable option, Sportiva also makes the TX2 Evo Leather , which is cheaper ($149) and only slightly heavier at 1 pound 4.8 ounces. 11.  La Sportiva Boulder X ($149)

For climbers that are just starting out, or old hands looking for a value option, look no further than the La Sportiva Boulder X. This shoe is extremely comfortable, excels on the trail, climbs third and fourth class well, and boasts insanely sticky rubber. And don’t be fooled by the price tag—these shoes can often be found online for as little as $120.

What are the downsides of the Boulder X? The shoe is too heavy to carry on a harness, doesn’t edge well on 5th-class terrain, and the bulky soles don’t take aluminum crampons well. Moreover, the leather upper stretches so much when wet that we’ve had issues with our feet twisting in the toe box, resulting in a tear where the rubber rand meets leather. That said, if you have wide feet and want an entry-level shoe that is a beast on the trail, the Boulder X should be near the top of your list. 12. Salewa Mtn Trainer 2 GTX ($230)

Straight out of Montebelluna, Italy—otherwise known as the boot-making capital of the world—Salewa’s Mtn Trainer 2 GTX is an approach shoe truly designed for the mountains. With the wraparound protection of a full rubber rand, a waterproof Gore-Tex membrane, and durable Vibram sole, the Mtn Trainer is more akin to a tank than a race car, and a great shoe to have on your feet for off-trail travel involving talus slopes, kicking steps in snow, boulder-hopping, and more. Even for non-climbers interested in exploring the alpine with a lighter and more form-fitting shoe, the Salewa Mtn Trainer 2 is an excellent choice.

How does the Mtn Trainer compare to the Scarpa Mescalito above? At 2 pounds 2.8 ounces it’s significantly heavier, but the extra heft does get you a waterproof membrane (the Mtn Trainer 2 is also available in a non-GTX version for $200). The Scarpa is overall a much better scrambling shoe, with rounded tread and a firm edging platform, while the Salewa has sharper lugs that make it a better choice for wet and soft terrain like mud and snow. Keep in mind that the latest Mtn Trainer (the “2”) is very narrow, and an integrated stretch gaiter at the tongue makes it difficult to slip on. But for the right environments or as a lightweight substitute for a mountaineering boot, it’s hard to beat the durability and protection the Salewa provides.   13.  Scarpa Gecko ($185)

Scarpa’s goal with the Gecko was to make a slimmed-down but precise approach shoe that excels on technical terrain. Overall, we think they did a pretty good job: The slip-lasted toe box is designed with climbing in mind and boasts a sensitive feel, over-the-toe rubber for jamming in cracks, and an aggressive outsole for smearing and technical edging. To balance things out, the heel is board-lasted (read: stiffer) for stability, and a cushioned EVA midsole adds comfort for the trail (as long as your load isn’t too heavy or your approach too long). If the La Sportiva TX Guide above caught your eye, the Gecko is well worth a closer look, too.

The standard Gecko features a suede upper, which offers a long lifespan, custom fit (leather stretches to the shape of your foot over time), and modest water resistance—especially when treated with a leather conditioner. It’s worth noting that Scarpa also offers the Gecko LT ($169), which mimics the original design but swaps out the suede upper for a lighter and but still durable ripstop synthetic fabric. The result is a slightly lower-profile feel, which translates to better precision on technical terrain. Synthetic uppers have become increasingly durable (the TX Guide and Konseal are prime examples), and they’re often the best option for climbers looking for high performance. Regardless of which model you choose, both Geckos are stellar approach shoes intended for those who spend a lot of time on technical terrain. 14. La Sportiva TX4 Mid GTX ($209)

Climbers love to push the limits of approach shoes, but some terrain—think the North Cascades, early-season Tetons, or Patagonia—quite simply demands more from your footwear. It’s no easy feat finding a boot that’s capable (and comfortable) on easy trail, glacier, and rock, but La Sportiva’s Aequilibrium Speed GTX checks the boxes better than most. Like an approach shoe, it’s flexible and cushioned enough to retain good comfort mile after mile, and the lightweight build won’t weigh your pack down too much on the climb. On the other hand, with a mid-height cut and heel bail, the Aequilibrium Speed offers the best stability and crampon compatibility of any approach shoe here. 

The Aequilibrium Speed’s tall collar and significant bump in weight mean it’s too heavy and bulky for most summer objectives, especially when you’re carrying your gear up and over a climb. Additionally, with the Gore-Tex lining, you’ll compromise on breathability compared to a non-waterproof shoe like the TX4 above. And finally, with such lightweight construction, the Speed suffers in terms of durability when held up against comparable mountaineering boots. But for mixed conditions or long snowy approaches to alpine rock, the Aequilibrium Speed could be Sportiva’s best solution yet. Approach Shoe Comparison Table

Approach shoe buying advice, what is an approach shoe, approach shoe categories, outsoles and traction, waterproofing, breathability, fit and sizing, stiffness and stability, toe protection, upper materials, the mid-height approach shoe.

An approach shoe is a specialized type of footwear for climbers, mountain scramblers, and hikers who often find themselves on rocky terrain. They are stiffer than a hiking shoe or trail runner, closer-fitting to boost precision, and have generous rubber rands for protection. But most importantly, they’re designed with ultra-sticky rubber soles (similar to a climbing shoe) for great grip on rock. In short, no other style of shoe comes close to the level of protection, traction, and stability that an approach shoe provides on more technical terrain.

All that said, just because you’re a climber doesn’t necessarily mean you need an approach shoe. For short, easy walks to the crag, you can get away with a pair of trail running shoes or sandals. Heck—at a crag like Rifle, you can practically belay from your car. But for long approaches to the crag, adventurous multi-pitch missions, or big treks into the alpine, approach shoes are an indispensable addition to your climbing kit.  

With climbing becoming a more and more diverse discipline (including everything from alpine scrambling and rock climbing to bouldering and gym climbing), approach shoes have followed suit. Some designs are stiffer, more streamlined, and more protective for performance on technical rock, while others prioritize breathability and flexibility for the trail. Others still are made specifically for cragging, light descents, or everyday use. We’ve broken down the market into four main categories: all-around, climbing, cragging, and mountain.

All-Around All-around approach shoes are your standard designs, built to tackle the mix of trail and rock that stands between you and your climbing objective. These designs are comfortable and supportive for long days of hiking, offer traction on both rock and wet terrain, and are roomy enough to accommodate foot swelling. While many shoes in this category can hold their own on technical rock (for these features, see our “Scrambling” category below), their design prioritizes performance on the approach—this is most epitomized in the sole, which often features a versatile combination of a climbing zone, smooth lugs, and aggressive heel. All-around shoes come in both leather and synthetic (often knit or mesh) uppers, so you can decide whether you want to prioritize durability or breathability. And finally, if you’ll be hauling your shoes up a multi-pitch climb for the descent, it’s worth considering this category’s more lightweight options. Some of our favorite all-around shoes include the La Sportiva TX3 and TX4, Scarpa Crux II, and Arc’teryx Konseal FL 2 .

Cragging For most climbers, heading to the crag or boulders means a short walk on a trail, followed by a day of climbing in one location. The sticky rubber sole and stiff build of an approach shoe might come in handy for rock hopping, but once you’re at your destination you’ll want a comfortable shoe that’s easy to get on and off (we’ll often bring a pair of flip flops to the crag for this very reason). As such, approach shoes in our cragging category (also ideal for bouldering) are on the more casual side, with features like a knit upper, microfiber liner for comfort against bare feet, and a heel that folds down for a quick slipper. Cragging shoes can also be a good fit for multi-pitch climbs when you want a lightweight shoe to haul up the climb for use on the descent. The  Black Diamond Session  and Circuit are two of our favorite cragging-specific approach shoes. Mountain  If you’re headed to an alpine climbing area such as the Bugaboos or the North Cascades, you’ll want an approach shoe that can handle snow and technical cross-country terrain. Many of the shoes in our all-around category can get the job done, but dedicated designs will provide better stability and protection with beefier leather uppers, sharper tread and deeper lugs, mid-height builds, and built-in waterproofing. Further, those using strap-on crampons will want a relatively stiff sole and upper (leather is better than mesh), and a raised collar will provide more comfort and security. Approach shoes in our mountain category include the Salewa Mtn Trainer, La Sportiva TX4 Mid , La Sportiva Aequilibrium Speed GTX.

Moving to the midfoot and heel brake, the outsole design here can vary quite a bit between models. Generally, the dotty style found on shoes such as the La Sportiva TX4  provides great surface area on rock, but fails to perform on wet or snowy terrain. On the other hand, models with sharper tread, like the Salewa Mtn Trainer 2, are made to provide a high amount of traction on wet and snowy terrain, but are generally more clunky on technical rock. Lastly, most approach shoes will have a heel brake, made of thin strips of sticky rubber for traction and downhill braking. Some shoes lack a heel brake, some lack a technical patch on the toe, and all will have slight variations in the midfoot rubber. Pay attention to each of these features to make sure you purchase an approach shoe that meets your specific needs.

For the majority of users that wear their approach shoes exclusively for hiking and moderate scrambling, edging is a non-issue. But for those who are proficient enough to climb technical terrain in the same shoes they hike in, a stable edging platform is essential. Most shoes in this category have a flat rubber patch under the big toe, providing a smooth and responsive platform for edging. Not only that, but climbers will want to look for models where the rubber rand comes flush to the sole (as seen in the Arc'teryx Konseal FL and Scarpa Gecko ). This provides a seamless, stiff edge like that of a climbing shoe. Even to the uninformed eye, this edge will look different from one that is made up of layers of cushioning, like that of La Sportiva’s Boulder X or Scarpa Crux II.

With a few exceptions, climbers generally limit their endeavors to days when conditions are dry and warm. In the world of approach shoes, breathability is a far more important factor than waterproofing. However, waterproofing is a nice security blanket if your climbing takes you into the mountains. The extra protection that comes with a waterproof and breathable membrane inserted into the shoe is great for creek crossings, surprise rainfall, or crossing snow. However, the extra layer adds weight and impacts breathability pretty significantly, hence why there are very few Gore-Tex models on our list. If you know you’re looking for a waterproof approach shoe, however, we’ve found GTX models to work consistently well, including the La Sportiva TX4 Mid GTX and Salewa Mtn Trainer 2 GTX .

Recently we’ve seen an increase in the use of synthetic materials for approach shoe uppers, with models like the La Sportiva TX2 and TX3, Arc’teryx Konseal FL , and Black Diamond Mission LT. Although you get very little water resistance from these shoes, it’s important to remember that their mesh and knit uppers wick water far better than leather and do not grow heavy when wet. As a result, they also dry out more quickly after a full dousing. For this reason, we think synthetic materials are a great option for summer travel when wet feet aren’t a threat to your safety. That said, we still opt for leather shoes (like the TX4) for most approaches in the mountains.

In terms of breathability, approach shoes constructed with a mesh or knit upper are going to breathe better than suede or leather versions, and far better than GTX models. There certainly is a tradeoff, however: highly breathable shoes (like the La Sportiva TX2 Evo) are not as durable or protective as their leather counterparts (the La Sportiva Boulder X, for example), although this notion has recently been challenged by technologies such as Black Diamond’s EnduroKnit and Arc’teryx’s ripstop mesh (as seen on the Konseal FL). These two materials in particular have impressed us with their combination of breathability and abrasion resistance.

Additionally, shoes with a mesh upper are far more permeable to small particles such as sand, dirt, and snow. This will depend on the size of the holes in the mesh, however, and a shoe like the mesh TX3 will be much more vulnerable than the mesh Konseal FL. Further, additional features like a sock-like liner (as seen on Black Diamond’s Mission LT )—or even the addition of a short gaiter—will aid in keeping trail debris at bay. Long story short: mesh shoes are your best bet for warm-weather approaches, but some models will be more compromised than others. And if you’re truly looking for the best in protectiveness and durability, we’d recommend a shoe with a leather or suede upper.

The weight of an approach shoe matters both when it’s on your foot and when it’s in your climbing pack  or hanging on your harness. Hiking mile after mile with less than a pound on each foot is going to feel far less strenuous than if you had a two-pound boot on each foot, and the same goes for carrying the shoes.

Consider the weight of an approach shoe especially if you’re spending just as much time carrying them as wearing them on your feet. Most likely, the more this ratio tends towards carrying over hiking, the lighter a shoe you should consider (the La Sportiva TX2 Evo  or Black Diamond Circuit, for example). However, there are always trade-offs in shaving weight. The lighter your approach shoe, the less protection, stability, and durability it likely offers. If your approaches require a high amount of performance from your shoes, don’t streamline too much.

There always is a compromise when choosing the size of your approach shoe. Many designs in our scrambling category are made to fit snugly so that they are responsive and stable on technical rock. Shoes in our all-around and mountain categories should fit more like a hiking shoe , with a bit of room for the toes to move around for downhill slogs and over long distances as the feet swell.

Most approach shoes are constructed with a to-the-toe lacing system, so it is possible to provide your toes with more or less room depending on the activity. Because of this, we recommend sizing your shoe comfortably with the ability to cinch the laces down tightly. Additionally, make sure you buy a model that fits the width of your foot well. Different brands or models fit differently. For example, La Sportiva's TX3 and TX4 are known to be rather wide, whereas the Scarpa Gecko has a snug fit.

Most approach shoes have built-in shanks or internal supports to provide a degree of stiffness. This construction differentiates these shoes from light trail runners, though they are a far cry from the full shank of a mountaineering boot. In general, the more technical your terrain, such as snow, scree, or steep trail, the more you will benefit from a stiffer approach shoe (examples include shoes in our mountain category like the Salewa Mtn Trainer 2 GTX ). A stiff shoe will be less comfortable on easy trail and during high mileage days (it’s for this reason that we hesitate to recommend approach shoes to hikers), but on uneven terrain it will keep your foot from flexing and straining to support itself.

Additionally, the stiffer an approach shoe is, the better it will perform on technical rock (within reason, of course). To illustrate this point, imagine edging on a small hold while wearing a pair of running shoes . In our mind’s eye, the soft cushioning compresses, the shoe doesn’t hold its form, and your foot scrapes off the hold. Now, perch on that same edge with a stiffer, more precise approach shoe. The rubber doesn’t compress much and the sole maintains a solid platform. For this reason, many of the shoes in our scrambling category (the La Sportiva TX4 and Scarpa Gecko, to name a few) have rigid midsoles and soles. Again, you’ll have to find the right balance for your needs as stiff shoes can feel clunky and onerous on the trail for many.  

The majority of shoes on our list—including the lightweight  Black Diamond Circuit —have a rand that extends over the toe box, providing protection from stubbed toes and additional traction on rock. Many of these shoes have full, wraparound rands, extending this level of protection and traction around the entire foot. The larger the rand—both in height and in area covered around the foot—the more durable the shoe and the better it will perform in cracks and on rocky trails. 

The type of material used in a shoe’s upper—the fabric that connects to the rubber outsole—correlates directly with its durability, water resistance, and breathability. Most often, a shoe will be made with synthetic mesh or knit material, leather, or a mix. Below we spell out the pros and cons for the most common materials used in approach shoes.

Synthetic Mesh-woven nylon, open mesh panels, and knit uppers are becoming increasingly common in approach shoe construction as manufacturers seek to shave weight from their models. These airy synthetic uppers certainly aid in breathability and cutting weight, but detract from the waterproofing, durability, protection, and climbability of the shoe. In the end, we love mesh or knit shoes during the summer months, but they’re not ideal for wet or snowy terrain or particularly technical climbing.

However, as we’ve mentioned a few times above, there are some synthetic uppers that manage to achieve many of the benefits of leather while maintaining a high degree of breathability. Particularly, Black Diamond’s EnduroKnit (as seen on the Circuit, Session, and Mission LT) and Arc’teryx’s ripstop mesh (on the Konseal FL) are impressively durable and protective, so much so that we’ve come to think of these shoes as being in the same class as leather shoes like the La Sportiva TX4 and Scarpa Crux II. They also come with the added benefit of being able to wick water and dry out quickly, whereas leather can grow heavy when wet.  Leather The majority of approach shoes, similar to climbing shoes, are made with a leather upper. Without getting too deep into technicalities, suede, leather, and Nubuck are all derived from the same material and generally perform similarly. On approach shoes, this leather will be lighter and more flexible than the typical glossy full leather you might see on an old hiking boot. Of all upper materials, leather will provide the most protection, durability, and water resistance. However, it’s the least breathable. Occasionally, as in the case of the Scarpa Gecko , leather and mesh will coexist to provide both breathability and durability.

Leather also tends to stretch. Because approach shoes aren’t sized as tightly as climbing shoes, approach shoes will not stretch as noticeably. However, especially when wet, full leather models such as the La Sportiva Boulder X certainly will expand, leading to a less supportive fit. On the flip side, as these all-leather models dry, they will conform more to the size of your foot (if they dry while on your foot), and fit even better.

Conditioning/Waterproofing If you have approach shoes with a leather upper, it is wise to treat them with a leather conditioning/waterproofing product. If not treated, leather can absorb water, making it heavy and more prone to stretch and shrink. Nikwax and Gear Aid both have a full line-up of products that will do the trick. Seam Gripping the Seams Climbers often apply seam grip to the seams of their climbing shoes (over the stitching and where the rand meets the leather) to reinforce them against abrasion from cracks. This simple practice drastically increases the lifespan of a pair of climbing shoes. You can perform the same practice with approach shoes, especially if you’re planning on using the shoes for scrambling or technical climbing. Additionally, when aid climbing, expect your shoe’s toes to blow out extremely quickly if not reinforced. Approach shoes are specifically designed for climbers as a replacement for hiking boots , so what’s with the mid-height approach shoe? Climbers may opt for a mid-height model for a variety of reasons. I bought these about a month or so ago (on sale so I thought I'd try them). Only pros I can find is that they are stylish. What I don't like is that they insoles come out just taking them off (or scrunches easy, putting them on). The insoles (and "vaporfly" soles) seem to offer no cushion or bounce. I've had other Nike running (& walking shoes) that offer more and give you like a bounce with every contact. I also seem to be stepping into a hard floor with these shoes insoles/soles with that no cushion bit. The "vaporfly" soles also seem to give pressure at where they attach to the bottom of the shoe, so I feel like there's something hard on my sole rather than the whole shoe's sole creating a more cradling effect for my whole foot's sole. ...

Explora Journeys’ Explora I

It’s not every day a new cruise line arrives. The debut of the remarkable Explora I was a moment years in the making for Explora Journeys , the upstart luxury operator that aims to bring a European sensibility to the world of vacations at sea. So far, the project is a smashing success, thanks to the ship’s low-key vibe, standout food and beverage, and intriguing itineraries that visit in-demand ports in Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. My own August 2023 trip on Explora I , from Copenhagen to Hamburg, Germany, included fulfilling visits to places such as Oslo and the town of Stavanger, Norway, a gateway to adventurous hiking with a postcard-perfect Old Town. The ship itself was also a destination, with its abundance of outdoor space — including an alfresco fitness center — and pools at seemingly every turn. The 461 suites, all of them with balconies, are filled with luxurious touches such as Frette linens and robes, heated marble floors, and Dyson hair dryers. But Explora I truly shines when it comes to food: During the week I was aboard, it was impossible to find a bad meal — and I was often astonished at the quality of, in particular, the pasta served in the Emporium Marketplace and the sushi on offer at Sakura, two of the nine restaurants aboard. The most ambitious of them all is Anthology, a rotating-chef concept that has seen a residency from seafood whiz Mario Ulaissi, known for his Michelin three-starred restaurant on Italy's Adriatic coast, and that recently welcomed Emma Bengtsson, from Aquavit , in New York City. Much has been made of Explora I ’s Rolex boutique — the first on any cruise ship — but for my money, the other shops on board were more interesting: The company has tapped family-owned businesses around the world to create capsule collections of resort wear, handbags, fragrances, sunglasses, and beautiful gifts that can’t be found elsewhere. Oceania Cruises’ Vista

The new Oceania Vista is in a class of its own; no really, it’s the first in Oceania Cruises ’ new Allura class. Of its 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings–owned brand — including a high-end cocktail spot called Founders’ Bar, serving 26 intricate drinks that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. As Oceania levels up, the cruise line has produced a ship that feels more like a floating resort than the vessels that came before. There’s pickleball; a health-conscious restaurant, Aquamar, serving made-to-order salads and pressed juices; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: There are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor and two massive terraces (2,400 square feet). But the most hotel-like touch? A celebrity chef–driven restaurant, Toscana, where Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I was particularly excited to try her signature, Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti, and lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers didn’t disappoint. Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ Seven Seas Grandeur

Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ sixth ship, the Seven Seas Grandeur , sailed its inaugural season in December, joining sibling ships Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor as the newest member of the luxury fleet. The cruise line is a favorite among T+L readers for its gorgeous ships and all-inclusive pricing that covers unlimited shore excursions, dining at specialty restaurants, and even round-trip airfare. Grandeur lives up to its name thanks to stunning, art-filled spaces designed by cruise ship interior experts Studio Dado: signature restaurant Compass Rose is enchanting with interiors inspired by a fairy-tale forest; the Observation Lounge sparkles with an undulating chandelier and swanky bar; and the $11,000-per-night Regent Suite has a private en suite spa and custom Treesse mini pool. As I boarded Grandeur for the ship’s inaugural sailing, I was mesmerized by the grand staircase and glittering chandelier. And with a maximum capacity of 744 guests, I found it easy to take time to myself in the myriad of quiet spots tucked throughout the ship, whether in the Serene Spa and Wellness area, in the Library, or on the Sports Deck overlooking the ocean. Seven restaurants include specialty steakhouse Prime 7, pan-Asian restaurant Pacific Rim, and breakfast and lunch buffet La Veranda, which refines the cruise buffet experience with daily specials like paella and sushi. Several bars and lounges, a pool and hot tubs, a casino, Broadway-style productions, and cooking classes at the Culinary Arts Kitchen make the ship a destination in itself, though guests will want to take advantage of those included excursions on Caribbean, Central American, North American, and European itineraries, ranging from seven to 16 nights, during the ship’s 2024 season. Silversea’s Silver Nova

Carrying 728 passengers, Silver Nova is big for the luxury sector, but boasts a hugely important metric: a capacious passenger space ratio — that is, the number of guests relative to the size of the ship. Simply put, this ship offers more elbow room per passenger than almost any other cruise vessel. Silver Nova is wrapped in glass, with an asymmetrical layout; the funnel is positioned off-center, so is the pool, offering an expansive, uncluttered pool deck. Many features of the brand-new ship recall previous Silversea successes, my favorite of which is the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, expanded for Silver Nova . S.A.L.T. perks include a gorgeous, sea-facing lab for hands-on culinary lessons (at no additional cost), plus a new concept, the Chef’s Table, where an 11-course menu is prepared for just 24 diners. All facets of the S.A.L.T. ecosystem, including ingredients, a bar, lectures, and shore excursions, are keyed to the region Nova is sailing. While food is a drawing card for Silver Nova , accommodations also received a revamp. Tied to the theme of bringing the outside in, there are brilliant new suites found in the aft starboard corner of the ship, with wraparound balconies revealing a 270-degree view.  This is where you can tuck me in when I win the lottery and head off on a world cruise. But until then, Silver Nova will summer in Alaska and spend northern hemisphere winters in Australia and New Zealand, places where top-deck views should prove ceaselessly rewarding.
