Before You Buy a Peru Sim Card

First things first, your phone will need to be unlocked before you can use it with a Peruvian SIM card. Many phones come unlocked by default, but make sure you check beforehand so that you don’t have any issues trying to use a SIM card in Peru. Two cell phone networks are used worldwide. These are known as the Global System for Mobiles (GSM) and the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA). Most countries in South America (including Peru) use the GSM network for mobile service. Phones that use the CDMA network may not work with Peruvian phone services, so the network your phone uses should be determined before buying a SIM card in Peru. Fortunately, many newer models of phones are designed to work with both networks. If you have a Motorola G4, E4 or later, an iPhone 6 or later, a Google Pixel, or a Samsung Galaxy S7 or later, you won’t need to worry about network compatibility since all of these models come equipped to work on both GSM and CDMA networks.

Buying a SIM Card in Peru

Perusim – perfect for travelers.

The best option for a SIM card in Peru for those traveling is PeruSIM . The sister brand of Cuy Movil and one of several specialized brands from Guinea Mobile. What is great about PeruSIM is that it uses the amazing network from Claro offering countrywide high speed coverage while still being specialized for travelers with all the perks that includes. PeruSIM has positioned itself on the market as the perfect SIM card for tourists as it has been designed specifically for their needs, offering excellent bilingual support through WhatsApp, all the sales staff speaks English and it accepts international credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, American Express and DinersClub.

With Peru Sim you’re in control, deciding whether you want a 5GB, 15GB, or 30GB data plan, all of them coming with unlimited local calls and SMS, Facebook and WhatsApp for 30 days. No contract is needed and purchase is simple and quick.

Where to buy

You have 2 options to buy a SIM card and a data plan from Peru SIM, both extremely easy. You can either buy it ahead of time and pick it up at one of their stores or purchase it in person where you can ask all the questions you might have. They currently have four stores operating across Peru:

Kennedy Park: The main store is located inside the Tourist Information Center at Av Diagonal 494, Miraflores , on the corner of Parque Kennedy (Kennedy Park).

Av. Larco: The second store is located inside the Tourist Information Center at Av. José Larco 799 , Miraflores. Just up the street from Larcomar.

Lima Airport: The third store is located inside the International Arrivals Hall next to all the Taxi companies at the Lima Airport Jorge Chávez .

Plaza de Armas, Cusco: The fourth store is located at the main plaza in Cusco, Plaza de Armas with the following address: Plaza de Armas, Portal de Comercio 125, Cusco .

Claro, Movistar and Entel

The industry leaders for cell phone service for locals in Peru are Claro (renting out their network to PeruSIM), Movistar and Entel. These companies provide coverage in Peru, an important factor to consider since travel in Peru often involves passing through remote rural areas in the mountains.

Most travelers choose to buy a prepaid SIM card for their trip to Peru. This allows you to make and receive phone calls as well as send messages and use internet data without needing to sign a long-term contract. Simply “recharge” your card when it’s running low and you’re good to go.

To sign-up, you will need to bring your passport and any extra documentation solicited to purchase a prepaid SIM card in one of their official stores. Their locations are notoriously busy so be prepared to wait around an hour and their staff do not speak English. Note, at times – depending on the sales consultants – they may ask for proof of address, which can be problematic if you’re a traveler in Peru. However, they don’t ask for this all the time.

Prices for SIM Cards

Prices for SIM cards in Peru are generally around S/15 (under $5) and the plans vary based on how much data you need. Make you also purchase phone credit for the SIM card at the same time so that you are able to make calls right away. The cost of SIM cards and phone credit will vary depending on the service provider and amounts. Make sure you also inquire about using texts or WhatsApp messages with your SIM card, since these occasionally carry different prices.

This should be everything you need to know about buying and setting up your Peru sim card. You’ll now be able to communicate with your family and friends back home with ease. Peru SIM Cards: Everything You Need To Know

by Melissa Giroux | Last updated Apr 24, 2024 | SIM Cards , South America , Travel Tips

Visiting Peru soon? Make sure to know what to expect when it comes to purchasing a Peru SIM card .

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Peru in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Peru. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Spanish – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Peru.

Machu Picchu, Peru

Best SIM Cards In Peru

If you’re traveling in Peru, we recommend using a SIM card from Claro, Moviestar, Entel, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to South America, you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other South American countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Peru

You can either buy a Peru prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase a South American prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Claro, Movistar, and Entel.

Andes mountains, Peru

Claro SIM Cards

Claro Peru offers three main types of data-focused plans:

  • 1.5 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 5 days for PEN 10 ($2.53)
  • 1.8 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 12 days for PEN 20 ($5.05)
  • 3 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 20 days for PEN 30 ($7.58)

Movistar SIM Cards

Movistar has six different prepaid plans available:

  • 1.1 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 8 days for PEN 8 ($2.02)
  • 1.2 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 9 days for PEN 9 ($2.27)
  • 2.5 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 15 days for PEN 15 ($3.79)
  • 4 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 20 days for PEN 20 ($5.05)
  • 4.5 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 25 days for PEN 25 ($6.32)
  • 7 GB + unlimited social media, valid for 30 days for PEN 30 ($7.58)

Entel SIM Cards

Entel offers two tourist plans:

  • Unlimited data, valid for 7 days for PEN 67 ($16.93)
  • Unlimited data, valid for 15 days for PEN 133 ($33.60)

Overall, we think Entel is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Peru Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, the South America Prepaid Travel Card works in 4 countries, including Peru, and gives you 12 GB of data for 30 days.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

Browse your options on Amazon

Another option is to purchase a prepaid South American SIM card on SimOptions .

They currently offer two data plans in Peru:

  • 10 GB, valid for 30 days for $24.90
  • 10 GB, valid for 14 days for $49.90

Browse your options on SimOptions

Finally, the last option is to buy an eSIM card for Peru or, if you’re traveling to multiple countries, an eSIM plan for South America.

How To Buy An eSIM Card For Peru

eSIM is a new concept that allows you to have a virtual SIM card inside your phone. If your mobile phone supports eSIM cards – it’s definitely one of the best options to get data in Peru.

Curious? Learn more about eSIMs for travelers on eSIM Roamers .

I started using eSIM as soon as my mobile phone supported it. And I first tried it when visiting my family in Canada. To buy eSIMs, I usually use Airalo . Keep reading to learn more about the best eSIMs for Peru.

Airalo Peru

If you want an eSIM for Peru, you could purchase one on Airalo . This website offers many eSIM cards worldwide and special plans for South America and Peru.

I’ve been using Airalo for several years, and it works fine.

Here are the options available :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $8
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $15
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $21
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $32.50

airalo peru esim

Here’s an overview of the options available for South America :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $15
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $28
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $39
  • 5 GB, valid for 30 days for $60

The options mentioned above are part of Latamlink and offer coverage in 19 countries, including Peru.

Alternatively, if you’re traveling in other countries that are not mentioned on the list, you can try Discover Global, which offers coverage in 124 countries, including Peru.

Here’s an overview of the options available on Discover Global :

  • 1 GB, valid for 7 days for $9
  • 2 GB, valid for 15 days for $17
  • 3 GB, valid for 30 days for $24
  • 5 GB, valid for 60 days for $35
  • 10 GB, valid for 180 days for $59
  • 20 GB, valid for 365 days for $69

Airalo Discover esim global

Now, one important thing to note about Airalo is that you’ll need to keep an eye out for the provider in each country.

Suppose you ever have trouble connecting to the Internet during your trip. In that case, it might be because you’re connecting automatically to networks and need to select a network manually instead.

When you purchase the eSIM, you’ll get access to the list of networks supported in each country.

Holafly Peru

Alternatively, you could look at your options on Holafly . You can read our Holafly review to learn more about this eSIM store.

Here’s an overview of the plan for Peru:

  • Unlimited data, valid for 5 days for $27
  • Unlimited data, valid for 7 days for $34
  • Unlimited data, valid for 10 days for $37
  • Unlimited data, valid for 15 days for $47
  • Unlimited data, valid for 20 days for $54
  • Unlimited data, valid for 30 days for $79

Finally, Nomad is also a great eSIM provider. Here’s an overview of the plans available for Peru:

  • 1GB, valid for 7 days for $20
  • 3GB, valid for 30 days for $48
  • 5GB, valid for 30 days for $54

Nomad also has Global , an eSIM plan for 111 countries worldwide. This plan offers coverage in Peru. Here’s an overview:

Final Thoughts On SIM Cards In Peru

As you can see, getting a prepaid SIM card in Peru or even an eSIM for your travels in Peru is pretty straightforward. You’ll even be able to stay connected wherever you go in South America without changing your SIM card, especially if you purchase a South American or global plan.

I believe the eSIM card is the most convenient way to get data in Peru if you wish to have data upon your arrival. This way, you won’t need to go to a store to buy a SIM card. Obviously, you need to make sure your mobile phone supports eSIM first.

Peru SIM Card: How to Buy and Use SIM Cards in Peru

A pile of different sim cards for cell phones.

To make calls within Peru without racking up expensive roaming charges, travelers with an unlocked GSM phone can purchase and use SIM cards in Peru . This explanation might leave those unfamiliar with tech-savvy lingo asking the question: what does this mean?

GSM and CDMA networks: Explaining the difference

GSM (Global System for Mobile) and CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) are two basic technologies in cellular phones. To give some background, most countries in Latin America, including Peru, are connected by GSM.

GSM carriers put customer information on a removable chip called a SIM card . If the SIM card is taken out and put in a different phone, the same number is transferred to the new cell phone. For this reason, SIM cards make it easier for compatible devices to switch between different GSM network carriers as well as cross-borders. In the United States, AT&T and T-Mobile use GSM, as does the majority of the rest of the world.

CDMA networks don’t use SIM cards. Instead, CDMA carriers use network-based registries to verify specific users. Some cell phone carriers in the United States use CDMA networks, such as Verizon Wireless and Sprint, although they are in the process of phasing this technology out. Because CDMA carriers generally only provision devices compatible for use on their own network, phones made for Verizon, for example, won’t work on Sprint’s network and vice versa. This also means that CDMA devices most likely cannot be used in Peru.

Also, some phones are “global”, and have an extra SIM card slot to support foreign GSM networks. But when these “global” phones are used on their own home networks (in the United States for example) certain carriers still use CDMA to authenticate their phones.

Locked or unlocked phone: Who has the key?

In addition to GSM compatibility, a cell phone must be unlocked to properly function using a SIM card from a Peru phone carrier.

A locked phone has a software code, or “lock”, that’s meant to ensure the phone can’t be used on any other carrier’s network. Alternatively, an unlocked phone does not have the lock software on it, or an unlock software code has already been applied. Unlocked GSM phones can accept SIM cards from different carriers and connect to a service network, which is exactly what travelers need in order to stay connected in Peru.

Certain phones may be sold unlocked, but most GSM devices are locked to a particular carrier when they’re purchased. To legally unlock a locked device, the phone owner must meet certain criteria imposed by their wireless phone carrier. This criteria includes paying the full price of your device or being in good standing with your service provider at the end of your contract. With this in mind, if you have recently bought a phone that you are still paying off, you will not be able to use this phone with a Peruvian SIM—you would have to look into your provider’s International plans.

Dedicated Travel Phone. Another option is for travelers to forgo the hassle of trying to unlock their own cell phone and buy one that’s already unlocked when they arrive in Peru . You can find unlocked phones available for purchase at Claro, Movistar, Entel, and Bitel locations—the main Peruvian phone companies—and other independent electronic stores—such as Coolbox—in cities throughout the country. Smartphone prices range from as low as S/.133 (about US$40) to more expensive options. Another option is to buy a cheap unlocked smartphone in the United States, which can act as your dedicated travel phone. This may be a good idea, as oftentimes you can find the same phone for cheaper in the States.

How to buy and use a SIM card in Peru: Step-by-step

Travelers with an unlocked GSM phone can purchase and use a SIM card in Peru. Follow this step-by-step breakdown of how to buy and use a SIM card on your next visit to Peru.

Step 1: Pre-travel check

Make sure the phone is unlocked and there’s a place to insert a SIM card. Your best bet here is to check with your provider.

Note that to remove the SIM card on earlier phones, one can simply remove the back case, remove the battery, and below the battery is a tiny chip that can slide out, to be replaced by a Peruvian SIM. However, in the latest models it is a bit different. There is actually a tiny hole on the side of the phone where a special pin must be inserted for the SIM card tray to pop out, so that it may be changed. Peruvian carriers all have this tool for replacing SIM card.

Some of the top cell service providers in Peru.

The 4 primary cellphone providers in Peru.

Step 2: Buying a prepaid SIM card

Claro, movistar, bitel and entel.

Claro , Movistar, Bitel, and Entel are the dominant communication providers in Peru. All offer a variety of mobile phone and home internet plans, but buying a prepaid SIM card (with no contract) is generally the best option for foreign travelers in Peru. A prepaid SIM card come with data, calls, texting, and the ability to add additional credit when needed.

Claro, Movistar, Bitel, and Entel all have locations throughout Peru. In the Miraflores district of Lima , all of these providers can be found a 2 to 10 minute walk from Parque Kennedy . There are convenient locations in Cusco , Arequipa , Puno , and other major cities as well.

Lima Tours:

A SIM card in Peru costs about S/.5 (about US$1.50) . At the time of purchase, buy some credit so that you can leave the store with a functioning phone, with internet access and call capability. An amount of S/.20 (about US$6) of prepaid credit should be enough to get you started. Once you add credit, you will receive a text message confirming the amount. This is a good indicator that your phone is working properly.

The costs associated with phone usage depends on carrier pricing . Depending on the carrier you choose, there are different tourist options available.

For example, as of September 2019, with Movistar , you can buy your SIM for 5 soles, and 20 soles pre-paid plan comes with 2 gigs of internet. With Claro , SIM is also 5 soles and 3GB of internet is 30 soles; as a bonus Facebook and WhatsApp photos, voice clips, and messages are unlimited. At Entel,  they have 1 tourist option available: the 5 soles chip plus 29 soles for unlimited calls within Peru and to USA and Canada for up to 30 days, 3.5GB of data, and most features of WhatsApp/Facebook unlimited. At Bitel , you can purchase your 5 soles chip and put 20 soles of credit on it for unlimited WhatsApp messages, voice clips, and photos, plus texts, calls, and internet accessibility—as you are running out of credit, internet speeds will slow (see step 5 for adding credit).

PeruSIM and  Cuy Movil

Cuy Móvil logo

These are two convenient alternatives to the major providers, and are focused more on the market of millennials and travelers. Cuy Movil and sub-brand PeruSIM both operate on the Claro network, which has some of the best coverage in the country.

PeruSIM , especially, is an excellent option for tourists. This is because, unlike the traditional providers listed above, PeruSIM is focused solely on tourists, and optimize their offerings accordingly.  You can choose from 1GB, 5GB, and 10GB data plans, that include unlimited local calls, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Facebook Photos, valid for 30 days. You can place your order ahead of time and easily pick up your SIM at their centrally-located Miraflores, Lima location – or even have it delivered to your hotel. This saves you time and confusion, and their website is in English and super user-friendly, making it even simpler.

Cuy Movil is a bit more geared toward the millennials of Peru as it allows users to activate their SIM through a phone application. It has a variety of 30 day plans that do not require a contract. Plans comes with unlimited Messenger, What’s App and Facebook, plus 1-10 GB of high-velocity internet. They’ll even deliver the chip to the user’s house within 3 hours for free, using the delivery service Chazki . It is not compatible for tourists, but that’s why the company created PeruSIM.

Step 3: Downloading WhatsApp

WhatsApp will be your best friend while you are abroad. Many providers in Peru include several features of WhatsApp unlimited in their prepaid plans. This application will allow you to send messages, voice clips, photos, and videos to your loved ones back home or your new friends in Peru—provided that they also have WhatsApp. With data, you can also make voice and video calls, but do keep in mind that video calls can eat up your data pretty quickly. This is a free software that can be downloaded to any smartphone from the App store, and allows you to connect with people across the globe seamlessly.

Step 4: Making calls in Peru

A woman holding a smartphone and taking a picture of a waterfall.

Example: 9 ? ? – ? ? ? – ? ? ?

Once you receive your new SIM card and phone number, you are all set to make and receive calls. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions regarding phone use:

Q: What is the country code for Peru?

A: Peru’s country code is “51”. If someone from outside Peru wants to call your new Peruvian cell phone number, the numbers they dial will look something like 5 1 / 9 ?  / ? ? – ? ? ? – ? ? ?;  which is in the format of the country code/ city code /telephone number.

Q: How do I make local calls from my new cell phone when I am in Peru?

A: To make calls to any Peruvian number within Peru, you do not need to use the country code. Just dial the 9-digit cell phone number you wish to call, and you will be connected. Land-lines are different in that they only have 8 digits. If you want to call a land-line number, dial “0” and the proper city code before the 8-digit number. It should follow the format 0 /city code/ ?? – ??? – ???

City codes:

  • Cusco / Machu Picchu / Sacred Valley : 84
  • Arequipa / Colca Canyon : 54
  • Puno/ Lake Titicaca : 51
  • Puerto Maldonado : 82
  • Iquitos : 65

Q: What are the emergency numbers in Peru?

A: Here is a list of important emergency numbers so you’re prepared during your next visit to Peru:

  • Emergency calls: 112
  • Civil Defense: 110
  • Red cross: 115
  • Police: 105
  • Ambulance: 106

Step 5: Adding credit to your phone in Peru

Claro, Peru phone company, Peru, Peru For Less

There are plenty of places to add credit to your phone. This photo indicates Claro territory. Photo by Nicolas Nova/Flickr

Adding credit to your prepaid SIM card is quick, easy, and convenient .

Official Claro, Movistar, Entel, and Bitel stores aren’t the only places to buy credit. Corner convenient stores and large supermarkets, such as Wong or Metro, also sell prepaid minutes.  A good trick is to look for businesses that have signs with your provider’s logos hanging outside their storefront.

Simply head to the counter of the shop with your telephone number and money on hand. Inform the person at checkout that you want to add phone credit, Claro recarga , Bitel recarga, Entel recarga , or Movistar recarga ; tell them the amount and your phone number; and they’ll take care of processing the phone credit transaction. Make sure you receive a text message to confirm your transaction at checkout.

Why Get a Peru SIM Card?

A local SIM card offers several advantages for tourists:

  • Cost-Effective: Using a Peru SIM card is often cheaper than roaming with your home network.
  • Convenience: With a local SIM, you’ll have a Peruvian phone number, making it easier for locals to contact you and for you to make local calls.
  • Data Connectivity: Stay connected to the internet while on the go, allowing you to use navigation apps, check emails, and share your travel experiences on social media.

Where to Buy a Peru SIM Card

Peru SIM cards are readily available for purchase at major airports, convenience stores, and mobile phone shops throughout the country. Look for providers like Claro, Movistar, and Entel, which offer reliable coverage and competitive rates.

Buying a Sim Card at Lima Airport in 2024

travel sim card peru

Preparing your trip to Peru and flying to Lima Airport and wondering if you can buy a prepaid sim card for tourists at Lima International Airport? This is guide exactly what you are looking for with everything you need to know before buying a prepaid sim card for Peru at Lima Airport.

Find out where to buy a sim card at Lima Airport, up to date prices as per April 2024, my recommendation, a vlog about my arrival and experiences, the best e-sim cards for Peru, info about international sim cards and more.

Staying connected while traveling makes life so much easier and therefore one of the first things I do when planning my next trip abroad is looking for the best sim card. Avoid high roaming charges and slow overseas data plans! In the past I always used to buy a prepaid sim card on arrival but nowadays I mostly order an e-sim card on the internet.

E-sim cards are simply so convenient that I happily pay a couple dollar extra to be online as soon as the plane lands and have internet on my phone like at home without paying high roaming charges.

As Traveltomtom is on a mission to travel to every country in the world I get to about 30 - 40 different countries every year and therefore I use about 30 different sim cards per year. As I am already traveling full time since 2012 you can imagine how Traveltomtom became a specialist in providing info about sim cards for tourists.

Therefore you can find already more than 200 sim card guides on Traveltomtom from all over the world: Peru , Colombia , Bogota , Brazil , Argentina , Buenos Aires , Paraguay , USA , New York , Panama , Mexico , Costa Rica , Amsterdam , London , Madrid , Paris , Istanbul , Philippines , New Zealand , Malaysia , Germany , Portugal  and many more.

So next time you are planning your adventure abroad come check out Traveltomtom for the latest prepaid and e-sim card advice for your next holiday destination. Bookmark me and let me help you save money!

My recommendation

Be aware that buying a prepaid sim cards at Lima Airport is EXTREMELY overpriced and Traveltomtom does NOT recommend buying a sim card for tourists at Lima Airport. Traveltomtom recommends getting an e-sim card for Peru or buy a tourist sim card in the city center of Lima.

There used to be a Claro store at Departures with local prepaid sim cards for prices, but unfortunately this Claro store closed as per updates from Traveltomtom readers in 2023.

Traveltomtom is an advocate for using e-sim cards when traveling abroad. They are very convenient and simple to use. However, fact is that e-sim cards for Peru are more expensive than local prepaid sim cards. That said, e-sim cards for Peru that you order on the internet are cheaper than buying a sim card at Lima Airport.

E-sim cards are so easy to get that Traveltomtom recommends paying a higher price as you are online as soon as the plane touches the ground and you don't need to buy a sim card on arrival in Lima. Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Peru via SimOptions or Airalo .

Read below about my experiences and find a vlog about buying a sim card at Lima Airport with my experiences. If you want the cheapest prepaid sim card deal for Peru you should wait until you reach the city center and head to an official retail store. For more info check out my guide for buying a sim card for Peru in 2024 .

At Traveltomtom we also firmly believe that global sim cards with data are great for traveling to Peru. Have a look at our comparison of the best travel sim cards with data in 2024  and find one for $24.90 USD with 10 GB data, which is only $2.49 USD per Gigabyte.

Best e-sim cards for Peru

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Lima in 2024 is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an e-sim card for Peru on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Peru e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Lima it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Peru.

airalo esim card plans for peru 2024

Airalo has e-sim cards from pretty much every country in the world and Traveltomtom uses about 20 Airalo e-sim cards per year without ever facing a problem.

Here are the Airalo e-sim card plans for Peru for 2024:

  • 1 GB data for 7 days = $8 USD
  • 2 GB data for 30 days = $15 USD
  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $21 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $32.5 USD

simoptions esim cards for peru 2024

SimOptions is another reliable e-sim provider that offers e-sim cards for almost every country in the world. SimOptions has so-called international e-sim cards that work in Peru and up to 141 countries around the world.

Check out the international e-sim cards from SimOptions for traveling to Peru in 2024:

  • 3 GB data for 30 days = $24.90 USD
  • 5 GB data for 30 days = $34.90 USD
  • 6 GB data for 15 days = $39.90 USD
  • 10 GB data for 14 days = $39.90 USD

Click here for more info or to order an international e-sim card for traveling in Peru via SimOptions .

Make sure that your phone is e-sim compatible and unlocked before ordering an e-sim card for Peru.

There are a couple more e-sim providers. One of them is Holafly but they offer e-sim cards with unlimited data. Traveltomtom is not a fan as there are restriction that slow down your data speed, very inconvenient! Another e-sim provider is Nomad and they have sometimes amazing e-sim card deals for tourists.

However, Traveltomtom faced some performance issues with Nomad e-sim cards and they will have to work on their reliability before it becomes a Traveltomtom top recommendation for Peru e-sims.

Lima International Airport (LIM)

lima international airport arrivals

The Jorge Chávez International Airport of Lima is relatively small and easy to navigate. When going through customs you are guided through the Duty Free and then you walk straight into the baggage hall. From here you pick up your luggage and walk into the Arrival hall.

The airport is located about 10 kilometers (6 miles) from the city center, but about 22 kilometers (14 miles) from Miraflores, the most popular tourist area in Lima. The Lima Airport offers free WiFi for all passengers and it actually works pretty good.

Where to buy a sim card at Lima Airport

claro store lima airport arrivals

There used to be 3 sim card shops, but things seem to constantly change at Lima International Airport. Also keep an eye on the comment section at the bottom.

The easiest and most convenient place to buy a sim card for Peru at Lima Airport is the Claro shop at Arrivals. Located between luggage belt 1 and 2, just before you exit the baggage collection hall with all the luggage belts, near the customs check exit. You can’t miss it! However, this kiosk is the one that sells Peru sim cards for a ridiculous price!

The Claro shop in the arrival hall is open 24 hours and accept credit cards as well as Soles (local Peruvian currency). There are ATMs and Money Exchange all around the baggage claim, arrival and departure hall.

Then there used to be another Claro store at Departures. To reach Departures you will need to take the escalator in the Arrival Hall to the second floor and walk to your right to the departure hall. There used to be a Claro store that was selling prepaid sim cards for a normal price right in front of Domestic Departures.

As per feedback from Traveltomtom readers the Claro shop at Departures is (temporary) closed. Keep an eye on the comment section for any updates.

peru sim lima airport store

The 3th option is the new Peru Sim store in the Arrival Hall of Lima Airport, next to the official airport bus and taxi companies.

Prices prepaid sim cards at Lima Airport

All info below is up to date as per April 2024. Prices are in Peruvian Soles: $1 USD = 3.7 Soles and 10 Soles = $2.7 USD.

Claro store Arrivals

As I dropped already a couple times before this is the store where tourists get scammed if you ask me. If you really desperately want to buy a sim card immediately on arrival at Lima Airport then this is your place. These are their Peru sim card deals for tourists:

  • 14 GB data + unlimited calls and social media for 1 week = $59 USD
  • 25 GB data + unlimited calls and social media for 2 weeks = $108 USD
  • 30 GB data + unlimited calls and social media for 3 week2 = $157 USD

I told you prices are insane! Now you understand why I call buying a sim card for tourists at Lima Airport a SCAM!

Claro store Departures (temporary closed)

claro store lima airport departures

However, at the Claro store at in the Departure Hall of Lima Airport they sell prepaid sim cards for Peru for a local price:

  • 4 GB data + unlimited calls and social media for 10 days = 35 Soles - $9 USD

PLEASE UPDATE ME WHEN THIS CLARO STORE REOPENS!

peru sim prices prepaid sim cards lima airport

At the Peru Sim in the arrival hall you also pay the tourist price:

  • 5 GB data + unlimited calls/sms + free social media apps = $21 USD
  • 15 GB data + unlimited calls/sms + free social media apps = $27.5 USD
  • 30 GB data + unlimited calls/sms + free social media apps = $37.5 USD

Best Peru sim card at Lima Airport

Please do NOT buy a sim card for Peru at the Claro store at Arrivals. These prices are exactly the reason why I write these travel blogs and arrival guides and provide travel tips for fellow travelers. Don't fall for these extremely overpriced tourist traps.

International sim cards for Peru are more expensive than local prepaid sim cards, but it depends what you want. An international sim card will be delivered to your home address before your trip. For $24.90 USD you get 10 GB data in Peru for 30 days.

E-sim cards are the easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Peru but rather expensive as $21 USD only gives you 3 GB data for 30 days.

Buying a Sim Card for Peru in 2024

Whenever the Claro Store at Departures reopens that is by far the best place to buy a sim card for tourists at Lima Airport.

But right now, as this Claro store is closed, you should consider Peru Sim. When you walk out from Baggage Claim into the Arrival Hall you will find them.

Here is my vlog about my arrival at Lima International Airport and tried to buy a sim card for my trip to Peru. At my time of visit the Peru Sim store did not exist yet, so you won't this sim card shop in my vlog, but it will give you a first impression of what it looks like arriving at Lima Airport.

In the end I did NOT buy a sim card at Lima Airport, but that was due to the fact that the Claro store at Departures had a little trouble with the system and I had to wait 30 minutes. Since I arrived late at night and I was tired I decided to buy an e-sim card for Peru and  the next day in Lima city center I bought a prepaid sim card for tourists.

In case you also missed the opportunity buying a sim card at Lima Airport, you want more info about the best 4G/5G network in Peru or you really want to get the best deal then check out my complete guide for buying a sim card in Peru in 2024 . For 25 Soles ($6 USD) you get 4 GB data for 30 days.

Order a prepaid sim card for Peru online

international prepaid sim cards for peru 2024

If your phone is not e-sim compatible but you would like to order a sim card for traveling to Peru online before your trip then check out the following.

Arrive prepared in Lima with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Lima, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

SimOptions is the only sim card provider that sells physical prepaid sim cards for Peru:

  • 10 GB data for 30 days = $24.90 USD
  • 10 GB data for 14 days = $49.90 USD

Click here for more info or to order an international sim card for Peru via SimOptions .

In fact, Traveltomtom recommends the Three Data Pack 10GB because it is one of the best value sim cards for Peru that you can order on the internet. This physical prepaid sim card is only $2.49 USD per Gigabyte. This is even cheaper than some e-sim cards for Peru.

However, e-sim cards are so easy to use that Traveltomtom often pays a little more for this convenience. If you feel the same way and your phone is e-sim compatible then here is a last reminder that you can arrange everything online by ordering an e-sim card for Peru.

Traveltomtom recommends ordering an e-sim card for Peru via SimOptions or Airalo .

How to get from Lima Airport to the city center

from lima airport to city

At the airport you will find the Airport Express Lima bus that runs from the airport to the city and vice versa from 06.00 am till 11.00 pm. A bus tickets is cheap and only costs like 12 Soles one-way ($3 USD). The bus has multiple stops along the way as well as several stops in Miraflores. The bus ride often takes more than 1 hour, depending on the time of the day and traffic situation.

My preferred way to go from Lima Airport to the city is to take an Uber from the airport. To Miraflores, my favorite place to stay in Lima an Uber costs around $12 USD. An Uber comfort will cost you a little more: 60 Soles - $15 USD. The Uber can be arranged through the free WiFi of the airport and the ride will take between 30-40 minutes.

I hope all the above tips for buying a sim card for traveling in Peru at Lima Airport were helpful and if you still have any questions then please leave me a comment below. I will try to help you out as much as I can.

Where to buy a SIM card in Peru?

There are two ways of buying a SIM card for your trip to Peru:

1. Buy from an online store before you travel (recommended)

2. Buy in Peru.

Let’s take a look at these options.

Buy before you travel

Online shops such as Holafly offer international SIM cards for travelers. We’ll explain why this might be the best option for your trip to Peru:

  • Internet the moment you land

If you buy your card before you go, you’ll be able to connect to the internet the moment you land in Peru. So you’ll be able to book a cab from the airport or message family to let them know you’re safe. You’ll also save time so you can start exploring this beautiful country.

  • Easy to use

SIM cards for Peru are easy to set up. If you buy from a store like Holafly , all you have to do is purchase from their website, receive your virtual SIM card immediately, scan a QR code, and proceed to install the data plan on your phone.

  • Free from COVID risk

In a pandemic, it’s safer to buy from online stores. Don’t put yourself at risk by waiting to buy your SIM in Peru. Avoid crowded shops by buying online.

Buy in Peru

We recommend buying before you go to Peru for peace of mind, but this is one main advantage of purchasing your SIM in the country:

  • Number of options

You will be able to choose between more brands and packages in Peru, which are not always available from online stores. So you can be sure to end up with the best product for you. Make sure to choose a brand with good coverage. The best providers are Maroc Telecom and Orange Peru which offer coverage throughout all urban areas.

eSIM card for Peru, the new alternative

esim peru

Now we’ve learnt about data SIM cards, it’s time to meet the newest way to access the internet. eSIMs (short for embedded SIM) are new, virtual SIM cards that provide internet at a competitive price. But is an eSIM better than a traditional SIM card? The main advantage is that you can get an eSIM anywhere in the world and it’s delivered to you via email immediately. SO let’s take a look at their advantages and disadvantages in the next section:

Advantages and disadvantages of eSIM.

Advantages :

  • Quick purchase and activation processes

Purchasing and activating an eSIM is easy. You just make your purchase from a store like Holafly and wait a few seconds for a QR code to arrive in your emails. With this, you can activate your eSIM and get connected.

  • Get an eSIM anywhere in the world

Are you already in Peru and struggling to connect to the internet? No matter where you are, you can always buy an eSIM and it will come directly to your cell phone. There is no delivery cost and you don’t have to wait more than a few minutes.

  • Affordable rates

Compared to paying data roaming charges, eSIMs are incredibly cheap. You pay one upfront fee for the eSIM, so you don’t have to worry about surprise bills.

Disadvantages:

  • Limited compatibility with cell phones

The main disadvantage of eSIM cards is their limited compatibility. As a new form of technology, many older cell phones do not offer it, so before you buy check your cell phone is compatible

Frequently Asked Questions about the Peru SIM Card

Any questions? Here is what we’re always asked about internet in Peru.

You can activate data roaming and use data provided by your current provider. But be aware that this will be very expensive. If you plan on using this option, you can expect a hefty phone bill when you get back home. Alternatively, you could buy Pocket WiFi (a portable device that generates a WiFi connection for your phone). This option is also expensive and you’ll have to carry the device everywhere. A SIM card for Peru is the cheapest and most convenient way of connecting to the internet.

Roaming rates depend on the operator, but you could expect to be charged between $7 – $15 per MB. So if you watched a movie on Netflix or a YouTube video, you could end up paying $100s. That’s why we recommend a Holafly SIM card for Peru, as you don’t need to worry about paying per MB and you can browse the web worry-free.

There are several factors to consider when buying a SIM card, including the quality of coverage and the price. Holafly virtual SIM offers data from one of Peru best providers at an affordable price. And you receive fast delivery at no extra cost.

If you buy your digital SIM card from Holafly, you can contact their customer support team 24/7. All SIM cards come with clear and comprehensive set-up instructions, so you can be sure you’ll solve the problem

eSIM Peru - woman hold phone

This article will explain why an eSIM is the most suitable SIM card for Peru for all visitors. An Airalo eSIM for Peru will benefit you in multiple ways.

Avoid the hassle of changing out those tiny SIM cards in your device, and switch to eSIM instead! Thanks to advancements in technology, eSIM has made our travelling lives much easier.

eSIM Peru is an excellent choice; let me explain why:

Table of Contents

What Is An eSIM?

eSIM is a digital version of your plastic physical SIM card already encrypted in your device. An eSIM enables you to activate a cellular plan from a phone carrier without using a material SIM.

Getting an eSIM is straightforward; just download the eSIM or data profiles to your device.

Most phones and devices already contain a microchip that allows you to install multiple eSIM profiles. It’s equivalent to having several physical SIM cards with phone numbers and information loaded into your device simultaneously.

Peru eSIM – Which Data Pack Should You Choose?

Which Peru eSIM data plan you should ultimately choose depends on how long you wish to spend in Peru and whether you will use wifi when available.

If you do plan to mainly use wifi during your time in Peru (cafes and hotels usually offer this option for free), then you should go with the small plan, 1GB for $6, valid for 7 days , or 3GB for $15, valid for 30 days .

And, if you mainly rely on phone coverage for your data, buy the largest plan available, the 5GB for $20 eSIM , valid for 30 days.

Airalo eSIM Peru – How Much Is It?

The best eSIM carrier for Peru is Airalo. It’s the largest eSIM store with eSIMs to connect you in 190+ countries!

Choose from 3 x Data Packs for eSIM Peru:

  • 1GB for $6, valid for 7 days
  • 3GB for $15, valid for 30 days
  • 5GB for $20, valid for 30 days

Peru eSIM is convenient

Arriving in Peru and immediately connecting to the local carrier is a traveller’s dream!

eSIM is the most accessible Peruvian SIM card for tourists – download, activate, and you’re good to go!

There’s no longer a need to queue at the airport to arrange a local SIM card for Peru. Get organised ahead of time and buy an eSIM.

It means you can order a taxi or ride via a ride-sharing app directly from the airport; it’s fantastic! Alternatively, jump online and search the public bus schedule for departures from the airport to the city, or instantly access google maps to follow navigation if you need to.

Furthermore, if you download this digital and best SIM card for Peru before your arrival, you can reserve that last-minute hotel room on Booking.com.

If you’re still wondering  what an eSIM is and how it works, this post  will explain it in plain English.

Download an Airalo eSIM for Peru Data Pack ; it’s a wise choice to save you time, and being so affordable, it makes perfect sense.

We honestly love this product. We even used the Global eSIM to keep us connected as we visited EVERY country in the world!

The Global eSIM connects you to over 130 countries; it’s the best!

How To Buy and Download eSIM Peru

The Peru eSIM data plans are easy to download to your device.

Buying a SIM card in Peru has never been this simple (not to mention reliable & affordable). It’s very easy to download an eSIM.

Download  the Airalo app , purchase the most suitable data pack for Peru from this list , and follow the steps to activate the eSIM just before you arrive in Peru.

Note: The eSIM validity data starts from the date of activation. So, you can purchase the eSIM beforehand but wait to activate it until just before you arrive in the country.

Important:  Your device must be compatible with eSIM. Please  check this list to see if your device supports eSIM   before purchasing any Airalo eSIM.

Here are a Few Tips:

  • Before arriving in Peru, switch from your current mobile provider to the local Peruvian eSIM provider. Don’t worry; a step-by-step guide is available to help you during installation.
  • Once your eSIM card is activated, I recommend you turn off data for all apps you don’t use, including those that can use a lot of data. Find this in the ‘settings’ tab on your device. Apps such as Netflix, TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube will eat up your data rapidly, so only access that once you reach your hotel and access the complimentary wifi.
  • And, if you want the freedom to instantly send those videos home to friends and family of your day trip from Cusco to see spectacular Machu Picchu or the highlights from your trip to see the Rainbow Mountains , Peru eSIM works like a dream.

Buying More Data Is Simple with eSIM

Peru is an exciting country, that is for sure! Be sure to read these 15 Best Places to Visit in South America before you plan your trip.

Furthermore, Peru is one of the cheapest countries to visit in South America and such a diverse one at that.

But, if you use your data quicker than planned in Peru, it’s not a problem to top up with more. Open your Airalo App and top up with more data; it’s quick and easy.

It’s important to know that Airalo sends you an alert message when you’re running low on data, reminding you to buy more. A useful feature, wouldn’t you agree?

Is eSIM The Cheapest Peru SIM Card Available?

Once you arrive in Peru, of course, you still have the option to purchase a physical SIM card at any major airport or phone store.

A local SIM will allow you to call and send local texts in Peru. Depending on the plan you purchase, it will also give you access to local calling rates and data.

Many local carriers in Peru claim to have the best sim card in Peru, the cheapest and the most reliable connection too. And, with so many phone plans and carriers, prices do fluctuate.

The price comparison for eSIM Peru is highly competitive to buying a physical SIM card for Peru. You would likely pay a little extra for eSIM Peru, but what it makes up for in convenience is priceless.

It’s entirely up to you. Plan to buy a local physical SIM card for Peru, arrange one after your arrival, or switch to eSIM and get connected immediately.

What we like most about buying an eSIM is its affordability, zero hassle, and zero fuss. And we love that we can keep our original number.

Keep Your Original SIM In Your Phone

Another perk of downloading an eSIM for Peru is that you don’t need to remove your physical SIM card from your phone. eSIM is digital, so it’s all encrypted inside your device.

It’s good news because you avoid the risk of losing your tiny SIM card (as it stays inside your device), and it also means you can receive your messages from home.

An advantage for eSIM users is that you don’t need to change your original mobile phone number; it remains the same.

This is convenient, especially when connecting with loved ones back home, as they don’t have to try and message you on a foreign number.

Oh, and once you buy an eSIM, you can navigate the Airalo app in English. So it’s much easier than decoding the Spanish language on your device.

So there you have it – eSIM for Peru is a wise choice for staying connected in this country.

Physical SIM vs eSIM – Which Is Better?

It’s a reasonable question that many people who travel regularly have asked. “Which is better, physical sim or eSIM?”

I was one of those travellers, but since making the switch to eSIM and enjoying the many advantages (the pros far outweigh the cons), I couldn’t imagine returning to physical SIM cards now.

I explain in this post why  eSIM for all international travel  is my only choice for staying connected worldwide.

Prepaid south america sim cards.

South America is perhaps the most diverse and culturally-rich continent on Earth. From the beautiful beaches of Brazil to the fascinating ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, there are certainly many reasons to visit South America. With so much to see and do, many people who choose to visit this part of the world do so for several weeks, if not months at a time. Travellers often plan everything perfectly, arriving smoothly at the airport to begin their trip only to realise that using their phone will incur huge roaming charges that they had not budgeted for. Ouch!

No one wants to have their dream holiday spoiled by SIM card problems, which is why we’re pleased to offer a SIM card that allows you to use data and make internet calls  at no extra cost while you’re travelling around South America.

Our South America SIM Card comes with 12 GB of data, as well as 3000 inter-sim minutes, meaning that if you purchase two of these SIM cards the two mobile phones will be able to contact each other at no extra charge. As well as this, you’ll face no incoming call charges from any country, meaning your friends and family can contact you with ease.

Let’s say you’ll be starting your trip with a friend in sunny Rio de Janeiro, where you’ll explore Copacabana beach and the various museums and natural attractions on offer in the surrounding area. You’ll be able to call each other if you get lost or split up for the day, as well as share any images with friends back home using your data allowance. You’ll then catch a plane to Peru to visit Machu Picchu, where you’ll live stream your trip using your data before your family call you to catch up. You might then finish your trip to Argentina, where you’ll visit the Iguazu Falls and Buenos Aires and use your remaining data to find directions as you navigate the busy city. All of this is made possible using our South America Sim Card.

How to Get a Peru SIM Card at the Lima Airport: 2023

travel sim card peru

**Updated August 18, 2023

The good thing is that SIM cards are relatively cheap in Peru. The downside is that you cannot currently buy a SIM card at the Lima airport in terms of the normal, cheap SIM cards that you can buy at any cell phone stand throughout the country. It used to be the case that you could get a normal SIM card after exiting arrivals at a Claro shop, but the shop permanently closed down sometime between 2022 and 2023. There’s 1 other shop that offers SIM cards, but they only offer minimum 1-month-long plans.

If you can wait, it’s much, much, MUCH cheaper overall to get a SIM card at any cell phone stand throughout the country outside of the airport. A typical SIM card is around S/5.00 (5 Soles, which equates to less than $1.50 US Dollars) for a prepaid plan that you can just top up any amount needed via an app. And yes, you can purchase a SIM card using your passport. For example, I have a prepaid SIM card saved for my parents. When they come to visit, I use the Claro app to continually top up their SIM card S/10 (10 Soles = less than US$3.00) for 3 GB of data that lasts 10 days.

With that in mind, you can see why the airport options below are not at all ideal and are the absolute biggest rip off:

travel sim card peru

  • The Claro counter in the baggage claim area (pictured above – you can see baggage carousel #1 in the background for context) or in the little holding room before exiting to the arrivals area. These counters rent out temporary SIM cards (the cheapest of which is S/.80.00; 80 Soles). As a side note, if you’re looking for a Peru money exchange booth, stay in the baggage claim area, and click on the link for more information on options.
  • The “be! smart” shop in the Departures area on the 2nd floor (pictured below – it’s by the entry to the Departure Gates behind Dunkin’ Donuts near the food court) offers Bitel SIM cards that come with a minimum 1-month plan (unlimited calls, text messages, Facebook, and more). There are only 3 plans available – S/80 (30 GB of data), S/100 (40 GB of data), and S/160 (unlimited data). Apparently, you don’t set up auto-payment, so the SIM will just expire on its own when the month is up. And they explicitly told me that they do NOT offer pre-paid SIM card plans at the airport.

travel sim card peru

As mentioned, my personal preference would be purchasing neither of the Lima airport SIM card options as it’s much cheaper to buy a prepaid SIM card anywhere else in the city. The downside to this is that you won’t have Internet leaving the airport to get to your hotel in Lima, so make sure you book some kind of airport transfer in advance because it’d be tricky using Uber without data.

What are other options instead of a local SIM card?

Here are options I've heard about from other travelers (these are not affiliate links): Airalo , GlocalMe .

How do I get from Lima Airport to Miraflores?

The easiest way to get from Lima Airport to Miraflores is by taking a taxi or Uber. Right after the baggage claim area, there's a small room you pass through before exiting to the arrivals area. In that small room, there are trustworthy taxi options, although these are normally double the price of an Uber. Usually, I call for an Uber once I get to the arrivals area because sometimes, they're already waiting there.

Does Lima Airport Have WiFi?

Yes! Lima Airport has WiFi and it's been completely free without any time limits since April 2021. See my post on “Is Lima Airport WiFi Free?” for more details.

How Far is Lima Airport from the City Center?

The Lima Airport is around 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) away from the City Center (west to east), but you may not actually be referring to the City Center. Most people don't stay in the City Center of Lima (where the Plaza de Armas is found) because it can be dangerous at night time. Instead, most people stay in the neighborhood of Miraflores (around 18 kilometers or 11 miles away; north to south), which is a very safe area to walk around at any time of day.

ESIM Product Comparison

Airalo is a good provider for a Peru eSim if you’re looking for a short-term data plan. This provider has only three plans for Peru:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $6

They’re not too expensive, so Airalo is definitely a decent option for a Peru eSim. In fact, Airalo offers some of the cheapest data plans for the South American country, so it is your best bet if you’re looking for the most affordable Peru eSims.

The Habla Telefon eSims for Peru all operate on the Movistar network, which is one of the best providers in the country. Movistar has excellent coverage throughout the country, as well as widespread 4G LTE availability. No matter which part of Pery you’re exploring, you should have fast Internet and a stable connection.

Also, Airalo eSims are easy to top up through the website and the Airalo app. Each purchase of more data will prolong the validity period of the eSim.

  • Affordable data plans
  • Access to the best network provider
  • Easy to purchase more data
  • No unlimited data plans

Maya Mobile

Maya Mobile is an excellent provider of an embedded Peru sim card. It offers five different data plans for Peru that are only a little more expensive than Airalo’s, but valid for a longer period:

  • 1 GB / 30 Days for $8
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $17
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $27
  • 10 GB / 30 Days for $50
  • Unlimited Data (Latin America) 30 Days for $129

Maya Mobile is also the only provider with an unlimited data plan for Peru, and it’s a regional plan that offers coverage in 16 countries in South America. In case you have plans to travel to other countries on the continent, this is easily one of the best data plans for you.

It’s worth noting that Maya Mobile allows data sharing, which is precisely what makes their virtual sim cards so great. You can split the cost of the eSim with your fellow travelers, and all of you can have access to fast Internet through the Movistar network.

  • Unlimited data plan
  • Good value for money
  • Access to Movistar network
  • No short-term plans

Holafly is usually known for unlimited data plans, but unfortunately, that’s not the case with their Peru eSims. This provider has just one eSim plan for Peru, which includes 6 GB of data, valid for 15 days for $44. That is very expensive, especially when you consider the prices from Airalo, Maya Mobile, and Flexiroam for similar data allowances.

You can’t even share your data in Peru because Holafly prohibits tethering and hotspots on their eSims. The only upside of a Holafly eSim is that you will have access to the Telefonica Moviles S.A.C. network, that’s one of the largest network operators in Peru.

  • Access to a large network operator
  • Generous data allowance
  • Trusted eSim provider
  • Data sharing is not allowed
  • Peru eSim card is too expensive

Nomad has only three data plans for Peru and they’re significantly more expensive than comparable plans from Airalo:

  • 1 GB / 7 Days for $25
  • 3 GB / 30 Days for $40
  • 5 GB / 30 Days for $45

They’re all Truphone eSim data plans, so you won’t know which networks you have access to until you’ve turned on mobile data. I wouldn’t really recommend Nomad as one of the top providers for a Peru eSim data plan, simply because it is one of the most expensive options out of the bunch.

  • Established eSim provider
  • Easy eSim setup and activation
  • Very expensive

Flexiroam is the best provider of limited-data packs for Peru. This provider doesn’t have any individual plans that offer coverage only in Peru. Instead, the country is included in their Latin Americas plans, which provide coverage in 12 countries throughout the region:

  • 500 MB / 3 Days for $3
  • 1 GB / 3 Days for $6
  • 1 GB / 8 Days for $6.5
  • 1 GB / 15 Days for $7
  • 3 GB / 8 Days for $17
  • 3 GB / 15 Days for $17.50
  • 5 GB / 15 Days for $28
  • 5 GB / 24 Days for $29
  • 7 GB / 15 Days for $40
  • 7 GB / 24 Days for $41
  • 10 GB / 24 Days for $56
  • 20 GB / 30 Days for $100
  • 50 GB / 90 Days for $200

A downside of Flexiroam eSim plans is that they’re usually valid for less than a month, so they’re not the perfect solution for longer stays in Peru. But when you compare the prices of Flexiroam eSims to options from Airalo and Maya Mobile, you see that the pricing is pretty similar, with the benefit of coverage in additional countries for the Flexiroam data plans.

Additionally, it’s important to note that Flerixoam eSims will automatically connect to the network with the strongest signal. You can switch between different providers all you like, which is excellent for exploring the more remote regions of the country. Overall, Flexiroam is easily the top provider for a Peru eSim, as long as you don’t mind the shorter validity periods.

  • Coverage in 12 Latin American countries
  • Access to multiple network providers
  • Short validity periods

Benefits of Getting an eSim in Peru

Why is it worth it to get an eSim for Peru? For one, you don’t have to pay data roaming charges, which are often very expensive. There’s also the fact that you can stay connected whenever and wherever you want, just like you have in your home town with your usual sim card.

An advantage of a digital sim card as opposed to a physical one is just convenience. You can purchase an eSim and set it up within a few minutes, and it’s ready for activation when you arrive in Peru. That takes a lot less time than walking around a foreign city, looking for a place where you can purchase a prepaid sim card or one specifically made for tourists.

Local Mobile Operators Offering eSims in Peru

Movistar is one of the largest network operators in Peru that offers eSims to both prepaid and postpaid customers. You can’t purchase an eSim online, and it’s important to note that the virtual chips aren’t available for sale in all of their physical stores. But if you manage to find a Movistar store that sells eSims, you can get one with a prepaid plan for very little money.

You must first purchase a virtual sim card, and then load it with money. When you’ve done that, you can purchase one of their many prepaid packages either by sending an SMS or through the Movistar app. The provider offers a wide variety of prepaid plans, with everything from generous data allowances to unlimited minutes and texts. The prices of prepaid packs range from $1.5 to $8, so they’re excellent value for money.

Claro Peru operates in a similar way to Movistar. You can purchase an eSim chip in one of their physical stores, load the card with money, and then buy one of their various prepaid packs with data, free minutes, SMS, etc. You can do this through the Claro app, on their online shop, or in the physical store. Claro prepaid plans are extremely affordable, and even the cheapest ones (up to $1) include unlimited access to Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter.

Devices Compatible with eSim in Peru

All mobile devices that support embedded sim technology will work with eSims in Peru. This includes all iPhones from the Apple iPhone XR onward, Samsung phones from the Galaxy S20 and later, and third-generation Google Pixel phones and newer ones. Some other Android phones also support eSims, as do iPads, smartwatches, and even some laptops.

If you’re not sure if your cell phone supports eSims and you want to double-check, just dial *#06#. This will bring up a list of serial codes for your device; see if there is an EID number. That’s the unique serial code of the embedded sim chip. If there is no EID number on the list, your smartphone most likely doesn’t support eSims and you will need to purchase a physical sim card instead.

Data Needed When Traveling to Peru

Can’t decide how much data will be enough for your trip to Peru? It mostly depends on your data usage habits and the length of your trip. For travelers who want an internet connection just to be on the safe side, maybe to check map directions, emails, and social media, up to 3 GB can be enough for stays of up to two weeks. But get a data pack with at least 5 GB for stays of up to a month.

On the other hand, if you want to use your mobile data more liberally and stream videos and music whenever you want, it’s better to get a more generous data allowance. Consider data plans with 5 GB for shorter stays, and those with at least 10 GB for 30-day trips.

Unlimited data is also an option in Peru, and it’s worth considering if you’re planning to create a hotspot so you can share the data with other travelers or just access the Internet on multiple devices. The unlimited data plan from Maya Mobile is pricey, but worth it if you are able to split its cost with other travelers.

What's The Best eSIM For Peru? We've Ranked the Top Providers in 2024

Known for its pre-Colombian historical sites, Andean landscapes, and world-class hiking trails, Peru isn't popular with tourists without reason. If you're planning to visit the country soon, it should come as no surprise that you won't be able to call, SMS, or access the web on the go with your smartphone as you usually would at home, and if you do manage to get connected via roaming, it can result in hefty additional charges.

However, none of this means you should leave your smartphone at home. If your device is a newish model (i.e., from 2019 or later), there's a good chance it'll support an eSIM. These nifty digital SIM cards can be downloaded and installed before you travel, promising blazing-fast internet in Peru at a very low cost compared to roaming and great convenience compared to physical SIMs. In this guide, we explore everything you have to know about eSIMs in Peru and what the best deals might be for you.

Dodge sky-high roaming costs, unexpected data charges, or spotty service on your trip to Peru by using an eSIM from Airalo to connect directly to local network providers like Movistar.

✨ If you're a new customer, use code MONITO15 to get 15% off your first Airalo eSIM, and if you're a returning customer, use MONITO10 to get 10% off today! Go to Airalo now to get started.

As we'll explore in more depth in this guide, when choosing an eSIM, you have two options. The first option is for you to go through a digital eSIM provider, and the second option is to purchase an eSIM directly from your network provider or carrier. We strongly recommend the first option. After all, with reputable online providers, you can always be sure you'll get good support, excellent rates, and quality instructions that normally exceed those of the big carriers.

According to our review and comparison of the best options on the market, here are the three best eSIM providers for Peru and other countries worldwide:

Best Overall: Airalo

Airalo  is an excellent eSIM provider for Peru . Its online platform offers global access to eSIMs through collaboration with big local telecom providers. In Peru, for example, Airalo works directly with Movistar to provide you with high-speed coverage directly from their networks, wherever you are in the country.

Once-off prices for eSIMs for Peru range from $6 to $20 and include between 1 GB and 5 GB of data. Most travellers should be able to get by with these amounts without any problems. Setting up and activating your eSIM happens entirely on your smartphone and it's very quick – in our test, it took us just two minutes (watch our how-to video on YouTube to see how it's done). What's more, if you start running low on data during your trip, you can easily top this up via the Airalo app. This lets you save time and hassle compared to buying a physical SIM, where you'd usually need to stand in line at the counter to buy or top up your card or package.

We recommend Airalo in general, especially if you travel often. The service provides an excellent connectivity companion while you're abroad. To find out more about this excellent eSIM provider, take a look at our in-depth Airalo review .

  • New customer? Use the code   MONITO15   to claim a 15% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.  Ts & Cs  apply.
  • Returning customer? Use the code  MONITO10  to claim a 10% discount on all Airalo eSIMs.

Best For Unlimited Data: Holafly

Holafly  is another trusted eSIM service which only provides packages with unlimited data to dozens of countries worldwide. Although these packages cost quite a bit more than the smaller Airalo packages, in return, they offer the certainty that you'll never use up all your data.

For trips to Peru, Holafly's data packages cost between $27 and $79 once off and are valid from five to 30 days. Like Airalo, Holafly also works with domestic carriers, so you'll get coverage like a local no matter where you travel in the country (although in remote regions, coverage can become spotty).

Although Holafly offers unlimited data in most countries, including Peru, if you're a globetrotter, it's worth keeping in mind that Holafly offers limited data plans to some other destinations. Be sure to check their website or app before traveling to a new country to confirm whether Holafly's unlimited packages apply.

Although Holafly's packages are generally great if you'd like uncapped access to the web, it's worth remembering that most travellers don't usually need such a large sum of data and that normally, 5 GB to 10 GB, at most, should be enough for everyday travel needs in Peru like navigating, browsing, and using social media. Moreover, your speeds might be temporarily throttled if you use a very extensive amount of data (e.g., for non-stop HD streaming or downloading large files). During our test in the UK, this happened to us at around 4.5 GB of usage. Sadly, Holafly's fair use policies don't clearly outline when networks throttle speeds since it comes down to the individual network or carrier and the country you're browsing in.

If you're curious, we tested Holafly extensively to see if its data plans really live up to their 'unlimited' promise. The short answer? Yes, but there are a few things you should know. Take a look at our Holafly review to find out what they are.

Considering Holafly? Use the code  MONITO  at checkout to claim a 5% discount on all Holafly eSIMs. Go to Holafly now to get started! ✨

Another Reliable Alternative: Yesim

travel sim card peru

A smaller and newer company than Airalo and Holafly, Yesim  is a Swiss-based eSIM provider offering highly-rated eSIMs for countries around the globe. Their website and app are simple, straightforward, and easy to use, and over 300,000 customers have chosen their eSIMs so far.

Like its larger competitors, Yesim gives you a SIM card connecting to local carriers while you're abroad. It can be installed quickly and effortlessly right from the app or via a QR code sent to your email after purchase. Interestingly, alongside its eSIM service, Yesim also offers a virtual number service that allows you to get an online-only US (+1), Canadian (+1), or Israeli (+972) mobile phone number to use for apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, OpenAI, Binance, Tinder, or TikTok. These virtual numbers can be used for a flat fee of $2.75 per month.

Going back to eSIMs, Yesim's packages typically cost between $7 and $28 for 3 GB to 20 GB, but only the 10 GB and 20 GB data plans last longer than 30 days (some plans up to 60 days are possible to purchase). In our opinion, this makes Yesim's offers slightly less attractive than Airalo's for travel in general.

However, it's worth remembering that Yesim's prices are often fractionally lower per gigabyte, so if you're looking for the best deal, make sure you visit Yesim's website and compare their prices to Airalo's,

How Do They Compare?

In the chart below, we've compared Airalo, Holafly, and Yesim based on a few factors you might find important on your trip to Peru or anywhere else in the world. As you'll see, the three are very competitive, with differences normally being slight. If you'd like to compare Holafly and Airalo directly, take a look at our side-by-side review of the two too.

Do I Need a SIM Card in Peru?

No, you don't need a SIM card as a tourist in Peru, but having one will enable you to make phone calls and SMSes and not to rely solely on public or hotel WiFi to access the web.

A good place to start would be to review your contract from your mobile network provider before you travel to Peru. Most contracts are limited to use just within your home country (or within the European Union if you live in an EU country). For all other countries, so-called 'roaming charges' typically apply. However, there is one exception: specific contracts sometimes allow you to use your data worldwide. If you have a global internet contract, you can also use it in Peru without unexpected roaming charges.

Otherwise, although precise roaming charges differ according to your network provider, the fees for using mobile internet in Peru are typically around $2 or $3 per 6 MB (six megabytes) of data used, though they could be higher still. For example, if you wanted to download an average-sized app from the Google Play Store onto your Android smartphone, you'd use around 24 MB and pay $8 to $10 in roaming charges. It should, therefore, be clear that roaming with your regular SIM card in Peru is generally not worthwhile and can lead to enormous costs. As we'll see in a moment, it's significantly cheaper to purchase a local Peruvian SIM card once you arrive or, better yet, an eSIM before you travel.

💳 Planning to use your credit or debit card on your Peruvian trip? You'll probably pay much more than you think in hidden exchange rate fees every time you tap your card or withdraw cash. Get a free global account and debit card with Revolut to avoid these fees and save money. Check out our ranking of the best prepaid travel debit cards to find out more about how you can save.

What Are eSIMs, Anyway?

Simply put, eSIMs are regular SIM cards that don't require inserting an actual microchip into your device while providing the same benefits. Newer smartphones (but also smartwatches, tablets, and other devices) can be equipped with eSIMs, and since you don't need an actual SIM card to install an eSIM, you can also get one before your trip to Peru. To do this, all you have to do is visit an online eSIM service, purchase the eSIM you want, and follow the instructions to download and install it onto your device.

Like regular SIM cards, prepaid eSIMs come bundled with a certain fixed amount of data, SMSes, or telephone minutes, which you can use at your leisure while travelling. You get to choose the package you want, and you can generally also extend your eSIM's validity easily right from an app.

Pros of Using an eSIM

In general, eSIMs have numerous advantages and are often a better alternative to using a regular SIM card for most tourists. In our opinion, the most significant advantages include:

  • internet immediately upon arrival in Peru,
  • no negotiating with SIM card sellers at the airport,
  • transparent and fair pricing,
  • online extension is often possible,
  • credit card payment is possible,
  • local telecom provider networks are used.

In our opinion, there are only a few reasons against using an eSIM when travelling to Peru (which we'll discuss below), and in most instances, we're sure that it's a far better deal than using your normal SIM card from your home country on Peruvian networks.

Cons of Using an eSIM

As we've already seen, eSIMs have very few drawbacks and are an excellent option for accessing mobile internet on your Peruvian vacation.

However, one disadvantage is the slightly higher upfront cost than physical SIM cards. That said, eSIMs are still comparatively cheap, especially for use in Peru from abroad. In our opinion, the significantly higher level of comfort and the possibility of having access to the internet immediately upon arrival are worth the extra pennies. Another disadvantage is related to installation, where the process may be unfamiliar to you if you've never installed an eSIM before. However, if you follow the instructions carefully, you'll be fine.

Finally, there's the issue of compatibility: not all devices support eSIMs . If your device was released before late 2019, we recommend double-checking on the internet or contacting a representative from an eSIM service to confirm whether your device is compatible before you purchase an eSIM. In general, the following devices will support eSIMs though:

  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPhone XS, iPhone XR, or iPhone SE
  • iPad 7th generation or later ,
  • Galaxy S20 or later
  • Google Pixel 3 or later
  • and many other devices (see our full list of compatible devices )

Can I Call From Peru With an eSIM?

Yes, you can call abroad from Peru with an eSIM , but once again, using your regular network provider and SIM card could result in surprisingly high calling charges at the end of the month (we've personally encountered as high as $4 per minute!). Fortunately, you can call abroad without the high costs, and there are three ways of doing this. We go through each below:

1. Voice-Over-IP (VoIP) With Data

In most cases, eSIM packages are loaded with mobile data, not with minutes or airtime. However, using your data, you can use web-based apps like WhatsApp, Google Meet, Skype, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, FaceTime and others to stay in touch with family and friends abroad while in Peru.

2. eSIMs With Airtime

Some eSIM services offer talk and text packages alongside normal data packages. These allow you to make direct phone calls or SMSes via local networks in Peru to your home country for only a slightly higher fee than regular data packages. Not all eSIM services offer this service though, but some, like Wraptel , do.

3. International Calling Apps

If you plan to make calls from Peru (or anywhere else abroad) fairly regularly, then your most reliable and affordable option will be to use a third-party app. In our opinion, Rebtel is by far the best service out there , offering low rates and providing you with local Peruvian phone numbers with which you can make calls abroad as though they were completely domestic.

Although it's popular, we typically don't recommend using Google Fi for this purpose unless you plan to go back and forth from the United States regularly (since Google Fi is only available to Americans and will not work if you spend over 90 days abroad per year). In general, Rebtel's rates are more affordable than Google Fi's too. To learn more about our first-hand experience with Google Fi, look at our in-depth review .

Recap: All About eSIMs in Peru

Are you planning a trip in Peru, and do you have a modern smartphone? Then, you should certainly at least consider getting an eSIM. In our opinion, they offer almost nothing but advantages and are generally far superior to using your regular SIM card.

To find the right provider for eSIMs in Peru, you should compare the available options. As we've seen, we recommend looking primarily at the network provider and the price. Depending on how long you want to stay in Peru, Airalo, Holafly or possibly Yesim are the best choices. To recap, here are what each can offer you:

  • Airalo : Best eSIM for Peru overall.
  • Holafly : Best eSIM for unlimited data.
  • Yesim : Good alternative to Airalo.
  • Wraptel : Best eSIM for airtime and SMSes.
  • Rebtel : Best calling service for international calls.

Yes, an eSIM can generally be used for calling from Peru, especially when paired with voice-over-IP services that connect to the internet, like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Google Messenger. If you'd like to call or SMS, consider finding an eSIM deal that includes airtime or minutes or use a service like Rebtel , which, for a tiny fee, provides you with a local number in place of your overseas contact's foreign number, making calling abroad significantly cheaper.
