Southern California Weekend Getaways

1. big bear.

Big Bear is one of the best Southern California Weekend Getaways

Big Bear has been one of the most popular weekend getaways in Southern California for generations. My great grandfather built a cabin up near Big Bear Lake nearly 100 years ago and since then, word has definitely gotten out about this special place!

If SoCal residents want to enjoy snow, droves of them head up towards Big Bear after a winter storm. If you want to avoid a traffic jam, try to time your visit for mid-week.

We love skiing at Bear Mountain or Snow Summit, enjoy snow tubing at Magic Mountain, and joining snowshoeing tours with the folks at Big Bear Discovery Center.

When the snow is gone, Big Bear is still an ideal weekend getaway for those who want to enjoy some cool mountain air and walk among the pines. There are several hiking trails in the area.

The centerpiece of Big Bear is Big Bear Lake, and the summer is the perfect time to enjoy it. You can fish, rent a pontoon boat , coast around on a Wave Runner, or even paddle a stand-up paddleboard.

Big Bear made our list of the best California mountain towns . See what other spots made the list!

Best Time to Visit : Winter for skiing and snow play. Summer for hiking and boating.

Don’t Miss:  Strolling through Big Bear Lake Village. This charming little downtown district is filled with cute little shops and fun restaurants. You can even take a horse-drawn carriage ride through town!

Stay Here: Big Bear is a great place to enjoy some time with family in a cabin. Big Bear Vacations has a great inventory of cabins at various size and price points.

2. Santa Barbara

Big Bear is a great Southern California Weekend Getaway

Heading up the coast to Santa Barbara is definitely one of my favorite weekend getaways in Southern California. Why? The scenery, weather, and wine scene are hard to beat!

It is no surprise that celebrities like Oprah and Prince Harry call the region home. Known as the American Riviera , Santa Barbara is a simply gorgeous place where the mountains meet the sea and the Mediterranean architecture reflects the region’s Spanish colonial roots.

Your visit to Santa Barbara should include some time at the beach , and East Beach is the city’s hub of activity. It is a popular spot for biking, sunbathing, kite flying, and water play.

It is also located adjacent to downtown as well as Stearns Wharf, a fun place to enjoy a drink and appetizers while taking in the waterfront.

Leadbetter Beach is a good spot to visit if you want to surf or boogieboard. Hendry’s Beach (aka: Arroyo Burro Beach) is the place to go if you want bring your dog along with you. Summerland Beach is a nice locale to relax and enjoy your own piece of paradise.

Downtown, you won’t want to miss Santa Barbara’s  Urban Wine Trail   which has more than two dozen tasting rooms with wines from the area’s celebrated wine region.

You also won’t want to miss strolling the grounds of Mission Santa Barbara , known as the Queen of the Missions . It was founded in 1786 and the inspiration behind the city’s red-roofed architecture.

If shopping and window watching are your thing, spend time strolling down State Street and through Paseo Nuevo , admiring the shops along palm-lined streets. There is a free shopping trolley that will help you around the area.

The Santa Barbara Zoo is a great destination for animal lovers. It is small but beautiful and feeding giraffes with beach views can’t be beat!

Best Time to Visit: Anytime, but summer and early fall are best if you want to get in the water.

Don’t Miss: Renting a surrey and biking along East Beach. It is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the scenery.

Stay Here : Four Seasons Resort the Biltmore Santa Barbara is worth the splurge. It is one of my all-time favorite resorts because of it’s stunning beauty and ideal location, across from Butterfly Beach. It is also popular with the rich and famous.

3. Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach is a favorite weekend destination in Orange County

Laguna Beach is a dream destination for those that love art and the ocean . It is the home of the famed Pageant of the Masters as well as several art festivals and galleries.

Laguna’s beaches are some of the most beautiful in the state. Some of my favorites include Treasure Island Beach (in front of the ritzy Montage Resort), Victoria Beach with its famed tower, and Crystal Cove State Park which straddles the border of Laguna Beach and Corona del Mar.

Main Beach is located on the edge of downtown and the most popular beach with tourists. Take in the views and then walk across the street to stroll quaint streets filled with charming shops, great restaurants, and several art galleries.

If you enjoy hiking, don’t miss the trails at Laguna Coast Wilderness Park (I love the Serrano Ridge/Little Sycamore Canyon loop) or the Morro Canyon portions of Crystal Cove State Park . Both are exceptionally beautiful in the spring when the hillsides are lush and sprinkled with wildflowers.

If you want to get out on the water, consider taking a whale watching cruise out of nearby Dana Point. December through March is prime gray whale watching season while during the summer you may catch a glimpse of the blue whale, the largest animal on earth.

Best Time to Visit: Laguna is a year-round destination but if you love art, come during the summer to enjoy the Sawdust Festival and Pageant of the Masters.

Don’t Miss: Pageant of the Masters where locals dress up as characters from famed works of art and pose to recreate the paintings and sculptures. It is incredibly realistic and truly has to be seen to be believed!

Stay Here : Surf and Sand Resort is a beachfront resort with a great location. How close is to the surf? Close enough that ear plugs are offered to guests if they don’t want to listen to the waves crashing!

The resort is just a 15-minute walk from the heart of downtown (or take the free trolley) and nearly all the rooms have ocean views. The resort’s Splashes Restaurant is a great spot for a special meal overlooking the water.

4. Coronado Island

Hotel Del Coronado is one of the most famous landmarks in California

Coronado Island is just a short, 15-minute ferry ride from Downtown San Diego but in many ways, it feels like it is a world away. The island has a small town atmosphere and one of the best beaches in the country.

During the summer months, there is live music playing at the Coronado Ferry landing every weekend from 2-5PM.

My favorite way to explore Coronado Island is by bike. The island is flat and easy to navigate. There are several places to rent bikes and they all include maps.

The most famous spot in all of Coronado is the Hotel Del Coronado. This red-roofed landmark has been drawing dignitaries, Hollywood celebrities, and families from all over the country for over 100 years.

Discover why Hotel Del Coronado made our list of the 75 California Landmarks You Must See Before You Die .

It sits on Coronado Beach which is often included on lists highlighting the best beaches in America. During the winter months, the resort plays host to an outdoor ice rink, and there is nothing better than ice skating with ocean views!

Orange Avenue is the island’s main drag. It is a great spot to shop in one-of-a-kind stores, eat, and just taken in the overall vibe of the area. If you are craving something bubbly, make sure to stop by Coronado Brewing Company .

Best Time to Visit: The winter if you want to check “ice skate by the ocean” off your bucket list. But truthfully, Coronado is an all-season destination.

Don’t Miss: The Sandcastle Man . He is known for creating epic sandcastles in front of the Hotel Del and he even offers lessons !

Stay Here : Obviously the Hotel Del Coronado is the most well known choice, but we also love Loews Coronado Bay Resort which sits near Silver Strand State Beach.  Jet skis, powerboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards are available for rent from the resort.

5. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a popular Southern California weekend getaway

Palm Springs has been a Southern California weekend getaway since the Golden Age of Hollywood. It is the land of palm trees, golf courses, and swimming pools.

While the Coachella Valley is most definitely a desert, the Palm Springs region is an oasis. It sits on the 4th largest aquifer on the planet – that’s how they keep all those golf courses so green!

On the edge of town, Indian Canyons are lush, palm-filled canyons fed by the shallow aquifer. For a small fee, guests can gain access to these canyons which are great for hikes and picnics. Don’t miss Murray Canyon which has a 3.9-mile trail leading to the Seven Sacred Sisters Waterfall.

One of most unique experiences in Palm Springs is taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway up to the Mountain Station which sits at 8,500 foot in elevation on Mount San Jacinto.

Temperatures are typically 30-40 degrees cooler than they are on the valley floor, and there is often snow during the winter months! Where else can you trade sun-kissed palm trees for snow-blanketed white firs in just 10 minutes?

Best Time to Visit: Late fall through early spring is you are looking for ideal golf and hiking weather. Summer if you want to snag hotel deals and spend most of your time in the pool.

Don’t Miss: Palm Springs Villagefest , the weekly street fair that takes places every Thursday night and features lots of great booths, music, and food.

Stay Here : If you have kids, the waterpark at Omni Rancho Las Palmas will be sure to keep smiles on their faces. The La Quinta Resort is known for its dozens of pools, world-class golf courses and tennis program, and being dog friendly.

6. Joshua Tree National Park

trips in southern california

With its towering boulders, diverse desert life, and iconic namesake trees, Joshua Tree National Park is a one of the best weekend getaways in Southern California for folks who love to be outside.

Joshua Tree National Park is a place where the high desert (Mojave) and low desert (Colorado) meet. This allows visitors to see two unique desert environments, but the high desert with its unusual-looking Joshua trees is the main attraction.

Climbing massive boulders is one of the most popular things to do inside the park. You will see plenty of professional climbers with crash pads, but amateurs will have just as much fun scrambling around in popular spots like Jumbo Rocks and Hidden Valley .

If you are looking for a nice hike, try the 1.1-mile loop to Barker Dam . There are boulders to climbs on along the way and prehistoric rock art to admire. Arrive at dusk or dawn and you may even see Bighorn sheep!

The Ryan Mountain trail is a great hike if you want a good workout. The trail gains 1,000 feet in just 1.5 miles before reaching the 5,461′ summit. Once at the top you will have a 360-degree view of Joshua Tree National Park.

I also recommend signing up to take the Keys Ranch tour. Long before Joshua Tree became a national park, it was the home of exceptionally hearty people with colorful stories.

This tour takes takes visitors to the former homestead of Bill and Frances Keys, which includes a ranch house, schoolhouse, and store, along with lots of great tales of pioneering desert life. You can only buy tour tickets at the Oasis Visitor Center, beginning at 8:30am each day.

Ready to visit the desert? Don’t miss our epic Joshua Tree Day Trip Itinerary .

Best Time to Visit: During the spring wildflower bloom when the desert becomes a riot of color.

Don’t Miss: Star gazing. These desert skies are far from the light pollution of the LA Basin and the Milky Way is sure to dazzle.

Stay Here : If you want to stay inside the park, bring a tent because campgrounds are the only lodging available. If you crave four walls, head to the small community of Joshua Tree which plays host to a couple charming small inns and B&Bs. Try the Joshua Tree Inn or bring a group and rent out El Coyote , a residence on five acres with views of the park.

7. Catalina

Catalina is one of the most popular weekend getaways in Southern California

Catalina is one of those weekend getaways in Southern California that is close by but feels like a world away. You can take a helicopter to Catalina Island, but most folks take the 40-minute ferry ride from Long Beach or Dana Point.

The most popular destination on Catalina is the charming town of Avalon, where golf carts are the main mode of transportation.

One of my favorite things to do in Avalon is take the zip line eco-tour. Tour guides offer up info about the unique flora and fauna of the island in between zips across a canyon with sweeping ocean views.

Your zip line tour ends at Descanso Beach Club , a great place to rent a cabana and enjoy a day of lounging, food, and drinks. The island’s signature drink is the Buffalo Milk which is made with creme de cacao, creme de banana, Kahlua, half & half, and plenty of vodka.

The waters off Catalina are filled with life. Many folks bring their wet suits and snorkeling gear to check out the fish living the kelp beds. If you would rather stay dry, try a glass bottom boat or submarine tour.

Back on land, you might want to spend your days four-wheeling on a back country tour in search of the island’s resident buffalo herd, playing mini-golf at one of the nicest courses I have ever seen, or admiring the Wrigley Botanic Gardens.

Best Time to Visit: Summer if you want to get in the water. Otherwise, Catalina is a great destination anytime of year.

Don’t Miss: Two Harbors , Catalina’s tiny hamlet with one hotel, one restaurant, one general store, and even a one-room schoolhouse. It is a great place to hike, spend time at the beach, and camp.

Stay Here : Hotel Vista Del Mar is located on the beach, overlooking Avalon Bay. It has incredible views, evening milk and cookies, complimentary beach chairs, and one of the best locations in all of Avalon.

The Millennium Falcon inside Disneyland's Star Wars-themed Land

Anaheim is the home of Disneyland, and us Disney fans think it is a fabulous place to enjoy the weekend. If you haven’t been to Disneyland for a few years, you will be surprised by how much has changed.

Disney California Adventure (DCA), Disneyland’s sister park, has had a full makeover. Highlights include Cars Land, Pixar Pier, and the food festivals that occur throughout the year.

Over at Disneyland, the newest land is Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge . It is basically paradise for Star Wars fans where you can pilot the Millennium Falcon, build your own lightsaber, and have a cocktail like the Fuzzy Ttauntaun or Jedi Mind Trick at Oga’s Cantina.

If you are a foodie, definitely head over to the Anaheim Packing District where craft beers and creative eateries are housed in the Anaheim Packing House, a former citrus packing warehouse.

Anaheim was founded by German immigrants back in 1857 and has been in the beer brewing business ever since. It is home to over 15 breweries , and I think a great goal is to try them all!

Anaheim is also home to the Angels, so make sure to visit during baseball season so you can catch a game.

Best Time to Visit: The first two weeks in December are great if you want to experience Disney at Christmastime with out the massive crowds. Spring and summer are ideal if you wan to see the Angels play.

Don’t Miss: The Disney California Adventure Food and Wine Festival . There are 13 different marketplaces serving creative dishes and regional beverages that reflect the bounty of California. Purchase a Sip & Savor Pass, a mimosa flight, and taste the day away in between rides.

Stay Here : There are so many great hotels in Anaheim but I want to give a nod to the OG of Disney lodging, the Disneyland Hotel . The hotel has undergone extensive renovations and the pool area is really fun. Plus, the drinks at Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar are legit!

9. La Jolla

La Jolla is a great beach town and weekend destination

La Jolla is another one of my favorite Southern California weekend getaways because it a great place to enjoy a weekend at the beach!

La Jolla Shores is my favorite beach in La Jolla. It is a long strand of beach that is perfect for water play and sunbathing, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby.

One of my favorite active things to do is kayak to the Seven Caves near La Jolla Shores. There are several companies that offer guided tours and it is the perfect “beginner” sea kayak experience.

Here are 25 caves in California you will defintiely want to visit.

On the way, you will paddle over the La Jolla Underwater Park which is home to sea lions, harmless leopard sharks and bright orange garibaldi.

I like kayaking with Everyday California , and can never resist picking up merchandise with their cool surfing bear logo.

If you are looking for a great spot to take pictures, head over to Scripps Pier . It is small enough to get the full pier in your shot and snag those classic “California pier” shots .

La Jolla Cove is another beautiful beach. It is a small cove that is picture perfect, and just north of the ever-popular seals at Children’s Pool. George’s at the Cove is a great place to enjoys drinks, apps, and sunsets.

Another spot you won’t want to miss is the Torrey Pines Gliderport . This is one of our favorite places to bring a picnic and then enjoy watching hang gliders launching off cliffs to soar above the waves crashing below.

Speaking of Torrey Pines, you should definitely head over to the Torrey Pines State Reserve and talk a walk along the beautiful cliffside trails.

The Torrey Pines are the rarest pine trees in the country, and only grow in La Jolla and on Santa Rosa Island off the coast of Santa Barbara.

Best Time to Visit: La Jolla is an ideal destination any time of year.

Don’t Miss: If you visit during the late summer, definitely don’t miss snorkeling with the leopard sharks. Everyday California offers snorkeling gear rentals as well as snorkeling tours. The leopard sharks are harmless but you get the bragging rights of having checked “snorkeled with sharks” off your bucket list!

Stay Here : La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club is a private club that also has beachfront rooms for non-member guests. When guests stay in these rooms they have access to club amenities. In addition to beach umbrella and chair service, they also offer beachfront tables, chairs, and barbeques to rent to have a sunset dinner with your toes in the sand.

10. Long Beach

Long Beach is an up and coming Southern California Destination

Long Beach has had a bit of a renaissance in the 21st Century. It went from being gritty and a bit sketchy to being filled with hip, revitalized neighborhoods and world-class attractions.

Long Beach’s Naples neighborhood is trendy area filled with shops, restaurants, and beautiful homes lining the area’s canals and waterways. It is a great place to kayak, paddleboard, or take a chartered gondola ride at sunset.

While in Long Beach, you definitely don’t want to miss the Aquarium of the the Pacific , the largest aquarium in Southern California. Book a behind-the-scenes tour to get up close and personal with seals, sea lions, penguins, and sea otters.

You can also book whale and dolphin watching cruises as well as harbor tours via the Aquarium. The waters off Long Beach are great places to see gray whales in the winter and blue whales in the summer.

Across the street from the Aquarium is The Pike, an outdoor outlet mall filled with brand name shops and dining. Shoreline Village is also nearby and features fun little shops in Easter egg-colored buildings.

Long Beach’s most iconic attraction is the Queen Mary . Today, the Queen Mary is a hotel and attraction, but in its heyday, it made 1001 transatlantic crossings.

Visitors can choose from several different tours, watch a movie in the 4D theater, view a replica of the Queen Mary made from 250,000 LEGO bricks, eat at the onboard restaurants, or stay in one of the ship’s rooms.

Best Time to Visit: Long Beach is an all-season destination. The weather is pleasant year round.

Don’t Miss: The Pow-Wow! Art Festival which takes place every July. Contemporary graffiti artists and muralists from around the world flock to Long Beach to create amazing street art in a week filled with music, events, and live scaffolding painting.

Stay Here : The Hyatt Regency Long Beach is located in the heart of Long beach’s tourist center and is within walking distance of Shoreline Village, the Aquarium of the Pacific, and The Pike.

11. Channel Islands

Santa Cruz Island Channel Islands National Park

The Channel Islands are one of the best Southern California weekend getaways for those who really want to get away from it all.

Channel Islands National Park sits off the coast of Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties and is wild, remote, and beautiful. It is made up of five different islands, but most people visit Anacapa and Santa Cruz Islands because they are the closest.

Most people reach the Channel Islands via the Island Packers ferry out of Ventura Harbor, but if you have your own boat, feel free to set sail for the islands yourself!

Santa Cruz Island is the best island for a weekend getaway because it is large and offers plenty of opportunities to hike and sea kayak.

Channel Islands Adventure Company leads guided kayaking tours of the islands many sea caves. There is also great snorkeling to enjoy in the kelp forests just off the coast. Wetsuits are recommended.

There are no food concessionaires on these largely undeveloped islands. Be sure to pack in all the food you will need for the duration of your stay. There is potable water available at the Scorpion Campground on Santa Cruz Island.

Best Time to Visit: Early spring for wildflowers or summer for snorkeling.

Don’t Miss: Wildflower season when brilliant yellow coreopsis and purple lupines dot the landscape with a riot of color.

Stay Here : If you want to stay on an island, you have to camp. Campgrounds are undeveloped and have pit toilets. If you prefer four walls, consider making a couple day trips out to the islands and sleeping at a hotel near Ventura Harbor .

12. San Diego

San Diego is one of the best weekend getaways in Southern California

San Diego has long been a favorite weekend getaway for Southern Californians due to its great weather and numerous things to do.

San Diego’s waterfront downtown area is a great place to call home base as you explore the city. The Gaslamp District is a happening area with lots of restaurants, bars, and people watching.

The entire downtown area is very walkable but there are always pedicabs in the main tourist areas that you can hop on if your feet get tired.

The USS Midway, a retired aircraft carrier, is docked at the waterfront and is open as a museum. Audio tours allow you to explore the massive ship at your own pace and learn what life is like aboard the cities at sea.

The waterfront is also a great place to catch a harbor cruise. I recommend opting for the sunset cruise where you can sip cocktails, watch the sunset, and then return to vibrant city lights.

If you are an animal lover, don’t miss the San Diego Zoo , often recognized as the best zoo in the United States. This zoo has had a hand in helping several species escape extinction, including the beloved California condor.

My family absolutely loves the zoo’s Animals in Action experience. We were able to pet a rhino and a zebra, feed hilarious pink flamingos, and see wild cats like the beloved cheetah, up close and personal.

The San Diego Zoo is in Balboa Park , a sprawling park that is larger than NYC’s Central Park and home to several museums. Our favorites are the San Diego Natural History Museum and the fun San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

San Diego is known as one best destinations in the US for people who love craft breweries. Head to 30th Street in North Park, aka Beer Blvd. , to taste your way through several breweries. Each spot has its own vibe and unique flavors.

Mission Beach is popular with the young, college crowd. There are several restaurants, bars, and a great stretch of beach. Nearby Mission Bay is a popular spot for watersports like jet skiing and water skiing, and home to SeaWorld, famous for its sea mammals and thrill rides.

Best Time to Visit: San Diego is a great place to visit year round. If you have kids, visit in October during “Kids Free” month to visit over 100 destinations offering free admission or meals to children all month long.

Don’t Miss: A ballgame at Petco Park , home to the San Diego Padres. The field is located right downtown.

Stay Here : I have never met an Embassy Suites I didn’t like and the Embassy Suites San Diego Bay Downtown is one of my favorites. Besides having a great location across from Seaport Village, a touristy shopping and restaurant area on the water, it has spacious rooms, a good breakfast, and that famous Embassy Suites complimentary happy hour.

13. Huntington Beach

trips in southern california

Huntington Beach is a fun weekend destination for those looking to spend some time on the sand. The city is known for its wide beaches and lively beach town vibe.

Also known as Surf City USA, Huntington Beach is a fun place to learn how to surf and there are several operators, like HB mainstay Cork Carroll’s , who are eager to get you standing on a board.

Surfing not your thing but like to stay active? There are several volleyball courts right on the sand.

Biking along the 15-mile bike trail that hugs the coast is another popular activity. There are several bike rental stands near the pier.

A bonfire is the best way to enjoy the beach at night. There are several bonfire pits on the city’s beaches, but you will have to claim them early if you are trying to snag one during peak season.

Huntington Beach is one of the best Southern California weekend getaways for dog lovers, thanks to its dog beach where pups can run unleashed on the sand and in the water. Restaurants like the Sit Stay Cafe and Park Bench Cafe and spots like Top Dog Barkery welcome Fido.

If it is dining and shopping you seek, there are lots of great options, including Pacific City, an outdoor mall filled with shops and restaurants located right on Pacific Coast Highway. Duke’s is a classic spot for a nice seafood dinner or Sunday brunch located at the base of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Best Time to Visit: There isn’t a bad time to visit Huntington Beach, but summer is best if you want to spend time in the water.

Don’t Miss: If you want to watch the best surfers in the world do their thing, visit during the annual US Open of Surfing which takes place during the end of July and beginning of August.

Stay Here : The Kimpton Shorebreak is a great pet-friendly (with no extra charge!) hotel that has beach cruisers, umbrellas, beach chairs, and even ice chests for guests to check out as part of their Beach Amenities Program. It is located in the heart of the HB action and the closest hotel to the dog beach.

14. Venice/Santa Monica

trips in southern california

Venice and Santa Monica are neighboring beach towns with great urban beach vibes.

Venice has long known for its funky Bohemian spirit and eclectic boardwalk filled with street performers, cheap sunglasses stands, and pot shops. I once had a guy offer to sell me a bunny out of his coat pocket while I strolled the boardwalk!

It is truly a great place for people watching because people come here to be seen! Muscle Beach is popular with the shirtless gym rat crowd and there is always a crowd around the beachfront skate park’ s bowl.

Beyond the boisterous boardwalk, head slightly inland to find peace and beauty while walking the Venice canals . If you have a kayak or paddleboard, you can also use it to paddle under the bridges and past beautiful homes.

If it is shopping and dining that you crave, stylish Abbot Kinney Boulevard has some of the city’s best shops, restaurants, and bars.

Just down the beach from Venice is Santa Monica, the beach and boardwalk most associated with LA, thanks to Hollywood cinema.

Route 66 once ended at the Santa Monica Pier, and it is still one of the most popular beach attractions in California today. Pacific Park, a fair on the pier, is home to classic rides and carnival games.

Santa Monica State Beach is very popular and usually bustling with tourists and locals alike. Its wide stretch of sand is a great place to spend the afternoon.

Shoppers won’t want to miss the 3rd Street Promenade or the Santa Monica Farmer’s Market . If it is a great meal you crave, try a farm-to-table meal at Rustic Canyon , the famed Office burger at Father’s Office , and handmade pasta at Uovo ,

Best Time to Visit: Both cities are great to visit year round but sunny days, fewer crowds, and lower prices can be find during the early fall months of September and October.

Don’t Miss: First Fridays , which takes place on the first Friday evening of each month on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. During this event the boulevard is lined with the region’s hottest food trucks.

Stay Here : Oceanfront Hotel Casa del Mar is located in between the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. Their Sea Wellness Spa offers a full array of facials, wraps, massages, and state-of-the-art treatments. On-site dining comes with perfect sunset views.

15. Temecula

trips in southern california

Temecula is a wonderful wine region northeast of San Diego that has become one Southern California’s most popular weekend destinations for wine enthusiasts.

Many people begin their weekends by seeing the Temecula Valley from above on a hot air balloon ride. Balloon rides begin bright and early at dawn, and include beautiful sunrises over the vineyards and mimosa toasts.

If you would rather stick closer to the ground, try a horseback ride instead. Wine Country Trails by Horseback offers 90-minute rides out on the hills and through the vineyards of  Maurice Car’rie Winery .

More animal-based fun can be found at The Alpaca Hacienda where you can feed and pet alpacas and shop for alpaca goods. It can also be found at Sugarplum Farm which is home to zebras, camels, and miniature horses, as well as incredible chocolates.

If you want to try something unique and fun, head into the hills south of town to mine for gems like tourmaline, aquamarine, quartz, and garnet at the Oceanview Mine . My family had a great time hunting for treasure and touring the mine. We all came home with special gems.

Old Town Temecula is a hub of shopping, dining, and lodging, all set in an Old West atmosphere, complete with wooden boardwalks. There are several breweries and bars in the area.

If it is wine you came for, you will be happy to know there are nearly 50 wineries in the region. It is always more fun to go wine tasting when someone else is driving, and Temecula Valley Jeep & Wine Tours are happy to act as your guide takes you to three wineries, into a barrel room, and on a back-road vineyard tour.

If you have a larger group, a limo tour is a better option. Temecula Limo Wine Tasting can accommodate groups of up to 14 people. They offer discount tasting tickets for seven different wineries and even have lunch packages.

Best Time to Visit: Avoid the summer and early fall if you don’t want to risk visiting on a 100-degreee day.

Don’t Miss: Socal Axe Throwing , which has a location in Temecula located right next to Wild Barrel Brewing. Beer and throwing axes will surely make for a fun evening.

Stay Here: Pont Vineyard Inn is located in the heart of Temecula Wine Country. Rooms are spacious and most have outstanding views of the property’s pond or surrounding vineyards.

The pool is a great place to lounge with a a cocktail and take in the scenery. Three wineries are within walking distance and dozens more are a short, Uber ride away.

trips in southern california

Malibu is well known for its celebrity residents, but us commoners can still enjoy a weekend getaway in this beautiful beach town.

When I was growing up in Ventura County, Zuma Beach was our favorite beach to frequent. Its a good place to surf, sunbathe on wide stretches of sand, and play beach volleyball. You may even spot a couple celebrities!

If you would rather skip the crowds and focus on spotting sea life instead of famous people, Westward Beach and Leo Carillo State Park are good options. Leo Carillo is known for its tide pools and sea caves. Westward is a good place to spot seals, sea lions, and dolphins.

If you want to surf (or watch surfers), head to Malibu Lagoon State Beach . I like coming here near sunset to watch the surfers ride waves as the sun goes down and take pictures of Malibu Pier in the foreground.

If you want to shop where the beautiful people shop, head to Malibu Country Mart . Far from country, this upscale shopping center is filled with high end boutiques, galleries, and a variety of dining options.

You visit Malibu without enjoying a meal to remember. Nobu Malibu has a stunning oceanfront setting and some of the best sushi in the state. Malibu Farm Cafe is a more casual spot on the pier with fresh made juices, a great crab cake sandwich, and a wide variety of vegetarian options

Malibu is surrounded by hillside and canyons, making it a great place to hike. Favorite spots include the ruins of Tropical Terrace at Solstice Canyon , the trail to seasonal Escondido Falls , sprawling views on Zuma Ridge , and over a dozen other trails in the area.

Malibu’s hills are home to a few different wineries and Malibu Wines is the place to be on Saturday and Sunday. It features wines from Semler and Saddlerock wines, live music, and food trucks.

They even have a wine hikes program that takes guests on guided hikes to Chumash cave paintings and through the Saddlerock Ranch vineyards.

Best Time to Visit: Malibu is fun to visit anytime but I love September when the weather is still warm and the crowds are gone, or March when the hillsides are covered in wildflowers and the waterfalls are running.

Don’t Miss: The Malibu Wine Safari at Saddlerock Ranch. You tour the property in open-air safari vehicles while stopping to taste wine and meet alpacas, bison, zebras, and Stanley the famed giraffe.

Stay Here : The Malibu Beach Inn is located right on the sand on a strip known as Billionaire’s Beach (in other words, they have some wealthy neighbors). Choose and oceanfront room and watch the sunset from your balcony, eat dinner at the onsite Carbon Beach Club, and then fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves.

17. Death Valley

Death Valley National Park is a great weekend getaway

Death Valley’s name turns a lot of people off from visiting. But the truth is, Death Valley is a vast and beautiful place , and there is plenty of life in Death Valley.

Death Valley National Park is the largest national park in the lower 48 , and there are plenty of great places to explore. Just be sure to keep plenty of gas and water in your car because gas stations are scarce, the climate is usually very dry, and distances are vast.

One of my favorite things about Death Valley National Park is that you don’t need to stick to trails when exploring the park! Death Valley is famous for bein the hottest spot in North America during the summer months, but during the winter it is a great place to hike and explore.

You definitely want to visit Badwater Basin, the lowest point in North America at 282 feet below sea level. In this land of extremes, be sure to scan the horizon and take in Telescope Peak which is 11,331 feet in elevation and only 15 miles away!

If you are looking to hike, consider exploring Golden Canyon , Mosaic Canyon , Sidewinder Canyon , and the hills around Zabriskie Point . My family loves scrambling up rocky hillsides and forging our own paths.

If it is sand dunes you crave, head over to the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes where you can wander, roll, make sand angels, and even snowboard down the hills. They aren’t the tallest dunes in Death Valley, but they are the most convenient to reach. Visiting the towering Eureka Sand Dunes requires a 2.5-hour drive down a remote dirt road.

The evening is a great time to enjoy Death Valley.  Stars are abundant and the Milky Way is visible.  If the moon is full, consider heading to the sand dunes for some moonlit exploration.

Here are 24 animals in Death Valley you may encounter on your visit.

Best Time to Visit: Winter is the best time to visit if you want to get out and explore the park in pleasant weather. Summer visitation is mostly dominated by Europeans looking to experience some serious heat!

Don’t Miss: The extremely rare pupfish in Salt Creek. Temps in the creek can reach 90 degrees in the summer months but the pupfish endures in the harsh environment. A 1/2 mile boardwalk runs alongside the side of the creek, making it easy to spot these special fish.

Stay Here : The Inn at Death Valley offers four star lodging in the middle of nowhere. This historic hotel was first built in the 1920s but has recently undergone a massive renovation.

The Inn has a spa, a great pool area, and is home to the lowest course in the world, the Furnace Creek Golf Course . It has been named one of the 50 toughest courses in the country.

Ojai Valley Inn

Ojai is one of the best Southern California weekend getaways to enjoy if you are dreaming of spa vacation and prefer things a bit on the “granola” side.

Ojai is a small town located in a valley in northern Ventura County, surrounded by avocado and citrus farms. It is a charming place that bans chain stores but embraces yoga, wellness retreats, and healthy living.

The Ojai Valley Inn is the queen of the spa scene. While stay at the Ojai Valley Inn is highly recommended you can still have still purchase treatments on weekdays without being hotel guest.

Purchase of a treatment also gives you full access to the spa pools, Mind & Body classes, fitness gym as well as indoor facilities for the entire day! The Mind & Body classes include things like yoga, meditation, fitness walks, and spin classes.

In addition to Himalayan salt massages and Kuyam treatments- part healing clay, part dry heat, part guided meditation- the spa offers spiritual counseling, crystal healing therapy, and even custom aromatherapy.

There are several other wonderful spas in the area such as the Oaks at Ojai and the Lavender Inn Spa .

Beyond the spa, Ojai is a great place to get outside. There is horseback riding, and several great local trails for hiking or biking.

Back in town, you don’t want to miss the wonderful shops along Ojai Avenue. Many sells goods from local artists and all are independently operated.

Best Time to Visit: I like to avoid the peak summer months. Summer temps in the Ojai Valley can be quite hot which may limit your ability to enjoy the great outdoors.

Don’t Miss: Bart’s Books, the largest independent outdoor (yes, outdoor) bookstore in the United States.

Stay Here : The Ojai Valley Inn is the big name in town, for good reason. This resort offers much more than the spa and beautiful rooms. There is also a golf course, pools, tennis courts, an artist cottage where you can take classes, and even a beekeeping experience!

19. Solvang

Solvang is a great weekend getaway in Southern California

Solvang is a charming little Dutch town 30 miles north of Santa Barbara. It is filled with cute shops, great pastries and several nods to Dutch culture.

We had fun renting a surrey and peddling around town. Keep an eye out for the Little Mermaid Fountain, five different windmills, and the giant red clog.

There are 20 different beer and wine tasting rooms downtown because Solvang sits on the edge of Santa Barbara County wine country. As a matter of fact, the wine-centric movie, Sideways , was filmed in Solvang!

I highly recommend going on a wine tasting tour to visit several of the 120+ wineries in the area. Options include everything from bike tours to limos.

Food is part of the fun in Solvang. Don’t miss breakfast at Paula’s Pancake House , beers and brats at the Copenhagen Sausage Garden , and Danish pastries from Olsen’s , Mortensen’s , and Birkholm’s .

Best Time to Visit: Visit during the fall and you can enjoy events like Danish Days in September or the Solvang Grape Stomp in October where you can stomp on grapes a la I Love Lucy !

Don’t Miss: Danish Days which is filled with Danish fun! Enjoy folk dancers, three parades, concerts, axe throwing, an Æbleskiver breakfast, historical Viking re-enactments, artisanal craft booths, and plenty of food and drinks!

Stay Here : The Landsby is a small, boutique hotel in the heart of Solvang. It embraces Scandinavian design and heritage, and has charming courtyards with fireplaces. The hotel’s restaurant, Mad & Vin, serves wonderful Wine Country cuisine.

20. Hollywood

trips in southern california

Hooray for Hollywood! Those of us who grew up in Southern California tend to take Hollywood for granted, but playing tourist for the weekend and going Hollywood can be fun!

Start by taking one of those cheesy celebrity TMZ bus tours or grab a map highlighting the star’s homes, because why not?

Walk the Hollywood Walk of Fame and search for your favorite stars, making time to place your hands and feet in the imprints left by celebrities outside of Grauman’s Chinese Theater .

Want to take pictures with your favorite celebrities but can’t find them anywhere? Head to Madame Tussaud’s and pose with wax replica’s of celebrities like Taylor Swift, Jimmy Kimmel, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, and Tupac.

If you want to see or be a part of the real thing, take a tour of Paramount Studios , the last major studio still located in Hollywood. Or sign up to be a part of a studio live studio audience during a tv taping.

You can’t spend a weekend in Hollywood without spending some time at the theater. There are several famed theaters around town hosting movie premiers, musicals, and concerts. I love watching the latest touring Broadway hits at the Pantages Theater .

After you have had enough of the city, head up into the hills and hike to the world-famous Hollywood Sign. There is a trail that link the sign with the Griffith Observatory . Views are especially impressive sight after a good rain. Runyan Canyon is another great place to hike (and potentially spot celebs).

Best Time to Visit: If you want to spot celebs, come during awards season (generally November through February) or wait for a movie premier starring your favorite actor.

Don’t Miss: A picnic at the Hollywood Bowl . This classic outdoor venue in the Hollywood Hills host famous music artists as well as the LA Philharmonic.

Stay Here : The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel is a historic hotel that reflects the glamour Hollywood. It’s palm-lined Tropicana Pool is a great place to kick back with a cocktail and enjoy that California sunshine.

Joshua Tree National Park

Highlights: Huge national park with multiple eco-systems, great for camping or day-trip drive-throughs

This getaway is east of Los Angeles and about a two-hour drive, not far from Palm Springs . The focus on a getaway here is the vast, 800,000-acre Joshua Tree National Park. It's where two desert ecosystems, the Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert, come together. It's a spectacular place to hike , take photos, or just drive through the park and admire the scenery. It also has some fantastic campgrounds .

There are many small motels near the park's north entrance in the town of Twentynine Palms and the town of Joshua Tree, and the area is also filled with home rentals. You can also camp overnight in the park. Some campsites can be reserved online in advance, and others are first-come, first-served. It's also legal to camp on BLM land outside the park boundaries.

The best time to visit is between October and May, as the desert temperatures soar well above 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius) in the summertime.

The Santa Barbara Mission

Highlights: Year-round sun and almost-perfect weather combined with culture and a great food scene

About 90 miles north of Los Angeles , this quaint seaside city has miles of beautiful beaches , several excellent museums, and a vibrant foodie scene. Popular things to do in Santa Barbara include taking whale watching cruises, hanging out on the beach, and shopping in the compact downtown area.

Santa Barbara is also the perfect place to see (and maybe buy) art. Aside from all the art galleries in the downtown area, there are two excellent art museums. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara both have impressive collections with an emphasis on California artists. There's also a fascinating (and free) Art, Design, and Architecture Museum on the UC Santa Barbara campus.

Consistently ranked as one of the nation's best small zoos , the Santa Barbara Zoo is a fun place to visit for an afternoon. Their popular Walkabout immersive exhibit features the land, animals, and cultural traditions of Australia.

Be sure to visit the city's Funk Zone , an area of former warehouses now occupied by restaurants, entertainment venues, and art galleries.

Palm trees reflected in a building in Anaheim

Highlights: Mainly known for Disneyland, also home to Knott's Berry Farm, Angel Stadium, and the Honda Center for sports and concerts

Another great place to visit in Southern California for a weekend is Anaheim. It's perfect for a local weekend getaway, as it's less than an hour from most parts of LA. Anaheim is home to Disneyland Park , the original theme park, as well as the newer Disney California Adventure . There's also Downtown Disney, a shopping and dining district for which no park ticket is required.

Baseball fans may want to take in a Los Angeles Angels game at nearby Angel Stadium, and NHL fans can catch an Anaheim Ducks game at the Honda Center. And although technically it's in Buena Park, not Anaheim, the Knott's Berry Farm theme park (and water park) is only 10 minutes away.

A hidden gem for families is Adventure City, located a few minutes away in Stanton. The compact amusement park feels like a state fair and offers free parking and unlimited rides for its low $24.95 per person admission price.

Big Bear Lake

Highlights: Compact mountain resort with the best Southern California skiing in winter and great hiking and boating in summer

Big Bear is a beautiful mountain resort that offers year-round fun and is an easy, mostly-freeway drive from LA. You really can be on the slopes skiing within about two hours of leaving most parts of LA.

This vacation spot is great all year-round. In the winter, it's one of California's most popular ski resorts outside of Lake Tahoe, and in the summer, these mountains offer miles of hiking and mountain biking, along with great fishing. The ski resorts are open and use some of their chairlifts to carry hikers and mountain bikers to higher elevations.

And since the summer is off-season, it can also be a cheap weekend getaway, as accommodations are much less expensive than in the winter.

In addition to the outdoor and winter sports, Big Bear has a small downtown area with shops, restaurants, and even a few live music venues.

Aerial view of Lake Arrowhead Village

Highlights: Summer mountain lake resort with swimming, boating, fishing, and hiking along with quaint shopping and dining

This quaint lake resort town in the San Bernardino mountains is a great getaway destination no matter what time of year. The little town, located alongside a picturesque lake, has a small-town feel and is less commercial than Big Bear, its mountain neighbor about 45 minutes away.

Lake Arrowhead is the ultimate Southern California summer getaway destination since the temperature is normally cooler than the Southland, located 5,000 feet lower in elevation. There are beaches, and the lake is popular for swimming, water skiing, kayaking, and other water sports.

For an authentic mountain getaway, Idyllwild delivers blue skies, fresh air, and giant pine trees. Located high in the San Jacinto Mountains, midway between San Diego and Palm Springs, the town is reached via a curving, 50-mile-long road that rises over 6,000 feet in elevation. The road is called the Palms to Pines Scenic Byway, as it connects the palm trees of Palm Desert to the pine trees of Idyllwild.

Accommodations include many home rentals, as well as several small inns. Camping is also popular, with options from primitive campsites in national and state parks to private campgrounds with amenities.

In the little town of Idyllwild, you'll find all kinds of little locally owned shops, galleries, artist studios, restaurants, bakeries, and the beginning of endless miles of hiking trails. The area's hiking trails connect to many popular regional trails including the Pacific Crest Trail.

Santa Monica Pier at dusk

Highlights: Massive beaches and outdoor recreation areas with world-class shopping and dining

This beach destination is surrounded by Los Angeles but is an ideal vacation spot and LA getaway . The city has some seriously wide beaches and some of the region's best restaurants. There is a wide selection of hotels, from beachfront bungalows to five-star resorts.

Santa Monica is relatively compact, with most of the shopping and dining focused on an area within a few blocks of the beach. The city also boasts the Santa Monica Pier , an old-school ocean pier home to a carnival-like atmosphere and an amusement park.

For some cool, but expensive shopping, go where the movie stars shop: the city's Montana Avenue retail area or the high-end Santa Monica Place outdoor mall.

Venture a bit south of Santa Monica to explore Venice Beach and its always-interesting beach boardwalk. Venture a bit north to visit some more remote (less crowded) beaches like those near Topanga Canyon.

Solvang

Highlights: A small piece of Copenhagen in California filled with Danish things to do, see, eat, and buy

Located just north of Santa Barbara in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang really is a little bit of Denmark in Southern California. It's filled with Danish people, Danish shops, and Danish food. Even the buildings look Danish, with a lot of windmills and European designs. The city was founded by Danish immigrants in the early 20th century looking to escape the Midwestern cold.

Don't miss the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum or the Hans Christian Anderson Museum , both interesting and fun places to visit for both kids and adults. The Elverhof Museum of History and Art is the only museum outside Denmark dedicated to both Danish and Danish-American culture. The Old Mission Santa Inez, built in 1804, is another must-see spot.

Surrounded by agricultural areas, Solvang is also a good destination for foodies, as there are a lot of restaurants that feature farm-to-table cuisine.

Hikers admiring the surreal landscape of Death Valley National Park

Why not get away to one of the lowest and driest places on Earth? Death Valley National Park is all about extremes. It's the lowest, driest, and hottest of all our national parks. The park is 3.4 million acres, so it's hard to explore the whole area on a single visit. Aside from the low parts, some of the park's mountains rise 11,000 feet above sea level.

The Inn at Death Valley is a unique luxury desert resort, which first opened in 1927. It recently underwent a total renovation and is a very luxurious place to stay in what is such a barren environment. The area is about a four-hour drive from LA.

Laguna Beach also has a good range of hotels, including several five-star beachfront luxury resorts. The food scene is also excellent with many restaurants serving all different types of food at all price levels.

Although it's not actually in Southern California, this Mexican border town is less than an hour from downtown San Diego . It's a great destination for a day or a weekend trip from San Diego. There are large parking lots on the American side of the border, and most people park their car, walk across the border bridge, and then take a taxi (or Uber) into downtown Tijuana. A Mexican beach resort within easy reach of the California border, Rosarito is about an hour south of downtown San Diego and is great for cheap weekend getaways . There are many places to stay, and it's a chance to experience real Mexican beach culture.

The food scene is great, from nice sit-down places to excellent street food like fish tacos. There are all kinds of things to do in Rosarito , both on the beach and in the water, (surfing, wakeboarding, and body boarding are very popular) along with a lot of fishing options.

The best time to visit Southern California is during April, May, and June, which offer the best weather. That said, coastal areas can be foggy in June. Average temperatures are in the high 70s during the day and low 60s Fahrenheit at night. The weather can get hot during June, July, and August, but usually, cooler temperatures return in September, making October and November also great times to visit.

Southern California usually doesn't see much rain, with storms typically coming in December and January and sometimes in March and April.

Temperature can also vary greatly between Southern California's coastal and desert areas, sometimes as much as 30 to 40 degrees. Coastal Santa Monica might be 60 degrees Fahrenheit in May, while the desert city of Palm Springs might hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit the same day.

The 33 Best Things to do in Southern California (Local’s Guide)

06/17/2023 by Kristin Addis 2 Comments

Sunny skies, laidback vibes, and pretty coastlines—these descriptions only capture a bit of Southern California’s charm. While most of the world may visit this half of California solely for Los Angeles, SoCal is home to plenty of natural and manmade spots worth visiting.

From day trips to weekend getaways, check out the best things to do in Southern California, organized by region:

Table of Contents

Santa Barbara

The Best Things to do in Southern California

Santa Barbara is typically considered the northernmost part of Southern California. And although the city doesn’t carry the same reputation as L.A., it has its own special charm. In fact, people call Santa Barbara “The American Riviera” because of its gorgeous Mediterranean architecture, climate, and coastal lifestyle.

1. State Street

This main road runs through downtown Santa Barbara to the beach and is a must for anyone exploring the area. Check out the Spanish-style architecture of buildings like the Santa Barbara Courthouse, or climb to the top of the courthouse’s clock tower for a panoramic view of the city. While you stroll down to the ocean, take advantage of the shops, bars, and restaurants along the way. One such stop is McConnell’s Fine Ice Creams , which has two locations on State Street.

2. Funk Zone

The Funk Zone used to be an industrial district of old warehouses. Now, the place is a sanctuary for art galleries, eateries, wine tasting venues, and other creative businesses. Some of the most notable spots are Cajé on Haley Street , Pearl Social , and Helena Avenue Bakery . You can find a map and guide of the neighborhood here .

Santa Barbara arguably has the best stretch of coastline in Southern California. It’s sparkling clean, never too crowded, and has plenty of parking at the downtown beaches. Leadbetter, Butterfly, Arroyo Burro, Summerland, and Refugio State Beaches, are few of the places to sunbathe here. Book a relaxing kayak tour to take it all in.

4. Channel Islands National Park

The Best Things to do in Southern California

While there are technically eight Channel Islands off SoCal’s coastline, five of them are off the coast of Santa Barbara; these five—Santa Barbara, San Miguel, Anacapa, Santa Cruz, and Santa Rosa—make up Channel Islands National Park . Here, you can kayak to the sea caves of Santa Cruz or dive among the kelp forest of Anacapa. Explore the wildlife (including wildflowers !) of the islands during a day trip or an overnight camping trip.

5. Santa Ynez Mountains

For every great activity at the beach, Santa Barbara offers an equally amazing hike up in the Santa Ynez Mountains. Some of the area’s most popular hikes include Seven Falls and Inspiration Point, though there are others in nearby Montecito. For a sunset to remember, drive up to popular mountaintop viewpoints like Knapp’s Castle and Lizard’s Mouth. You can also book a mountain bike tour for a slightly different experience.

Best activities & experiences in Santa Barbara:

  • This catamaran sunset cruise is the perfect way to end an action-packed day in Santa Barbara.
  • Ready to get your wine tasting on? This Santa Ynez wine country shuttle is a great option.
  • Santa Barbara is a fantastic place for whale watching. Book this tour to see some amazing marine life.

Los Angeles

The Best Things to do in Southern California

Los Angeles—the name alone brings old Hollywood glamour, Rodeo Drive, and the promise of cinematic fame. But there’s more to L.A. than its star-studded streets!

6. Hollywood sign

High up in the Santa Monica Mountains, this American cultural icon is synonymous with L.A. You can reach this sign by hiking the Mt. Hollywood trail, the Brush Canyon Trail, or the Cahuenga Peak Trail. But no matter which route you choose, you’ll be rewarded with the views of greater Los Angeles. Try to hike on a clear day—you might even be able to see all the way to the ocean!

7. LA Museums

The Best Things to do in Southern California

L.A.’s world-renowned museums are a testament to its fantastic art scene. The most notable of the museums is the  Los Angeles County Museum of Art  (also known as LACMA), the largest art museum in the western U.S. You may recognize some of the LACMA’s works on Instagram, where its installation of antique street lamps has become a popular photo-op! Another museum is the free  J. Paul Getty Museum . Be sure to peruse both the Getty Center, where the modern collections are displayed, and the Getty Villa over in Malibu. Other great museums in the city include The Broad and the Hollywood Museum .

The Best Things to do in Southern California

The celebrated beach town of Malibu is home to countless celebrities, and for good reason. More than 20 miles of beautiful coastline create a haven for both surfers and sunbathers, while amazing restaurants like  Malibu Farm  on the pier make for a great food scene. The adjacent mountains are home to scenic hiking trails, and nearby vineyards offer world-renowned wine tasting. Whales can be spotted seasonally at  Point Dume  (which is also a spot for viewing spring  wildflowers  and the occasional superbloom). Some must-sees here are Surfrider Beach, Zuma Beach, and Pepperdine’s Payson Library Surfboard Room.

9. Griffith Observatory

The Best Things to do in Southern California

In L.A.’s Griffith Park, the Griffith Observatory sits on the south-facing side of Mt. Hollywood, overlooking all of Los Angeles (including the Hollywood sign off to the west). The observatory is a unique location to enjoy sunset and the panoramic views that come as the city lights up. Quite simply, this is quintessential L.A.

10. Live Music

L.A. is perhaps the greatest place in the world for music. If there’s an artist you want to see, they’ll probably stop in L.A. at some point. Catch a concert at L.A.’s different venues (like the  Hollywood Bowl  or  The Greek Theatre ) scattered throughout the city.

PS: Consider getting a Go City All-Inclusive Pass if you plan on visiting several of the attractions.

Best activities & experiences in Los Angeles:

  • Catch a wave at Venice Beach with this 2-hour surfing lesson .
  • Imagine seeing the Hollywood sign from above…This helicopter tour will take you on the ride of your life.
  • Get the most of all of Los Angeles’ sights and sounds on this hop-on-hop-off big bus tour .

The Best Things to do in Southern California

The mountain resort town of Big Bear has similarities to Lake Tahoe in Northern California . Located in the San Bernardino Mountains, this area is great any time of year.

11. Ski and snowboard

Heading up to Big Bear is an ideal excursion when hitting the beach gets out of season. In the winter, take advantage of Big Bear’s Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. With a shuttle running between the two, it’s easy to spend time hitting the slopes at both!

12. Sledding

Have some old-fashioned winter fun and try sledding in Big Bear! This is an affordable way to spend a winter day and only requires a cheap plastic sled and a snowy hillside. Sledding not only perfectly supplements a day of skiing, but it also serves as an alternative for people who aren’t sure if “hitting the slopes” is for them.

13. Big Bear Lake

The Best Things to do in Southern California

When the snow melts and temperatures rise, take advantage of Big Bear Lake. The seven-mile-long lake has more than enough space for swimming, fishing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and even parasailing!

14. Camping

Make a trip of your visit to Big Bear and camp alongside the lake in the warmer months. Campers will find a variety of options here, with choices such as tent camping, RV camping, and free forest camping deep in the San Bernardino National Forest.

There are plenty of great hiking trails in Big Bear, too. Visitors can choose from easy trails like the Woodland Trail or moderate hikes like the Castle Rock Trail. Meanwhile, the Cougar Crest trail is notable for its difficulty. Trails range from less than a mile to 15 miles, but plan ahead—some trails require certain passes.

Best activities & experiences in Big Bear:

  • Get your adrenaline pumping by checking out this ziplining experience .
  • Take a segway tour through the town of Big Bear and the surrounding forest.

Orange County

The Best Things to do in Southern California

16. Catalina Island

The Best Things to do in Southern California

A two-hour boat ride from Long Beach, Catalina Island is a 22 mile-long getaway that packs a punch. On the south end of the island, Avalon is a popular destination for tourists thanks to its wide variety of attractions. On the other side, the northern Two Harbors is more rustic and small-scale. Regardless of where you end up, take advantage of coastline activities like diving and snorkeling among world-class kelp forests.

The Best Things to do in Southern California

Laguna’s 20,000 acres of protected wilderness make the whole region a nature lover’s dream. This former “artist colony” is now a marine-protected area, making its seven miles of shoreline and more than 30 coves. Take a stroll through downtown and picnic at Heisler Park for a beautiful coastal view.

18. Newport Beach

The Best Things to do in Southern California

With the largest recreational harbor on the West Coast, Newport is great for strolling down the Newport Pier, exploring the Back Bay Loop Trail, or shopping until your heart is content at Fashion Island. 19. Huntington Beach

Nicknamed, “surf city,” Huntington Beach has been the home of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing since 1959. But to truly experience one of the best surf spots in California, rent a board and try it out for yourself! Other fun things to do here include grabbing a bite at Ruby’s diner, hanging out on the beach, or window shopping at the nearby South Coast Plaza.

20. Disneyland in Anaheim

Having grown up close to Disneyland, I’ve easily been over 100 times and clearly, I’m a fan. While you’re there, grab one of the famously delicious churros and stroll down charming Main Street, or check out the revamped Star Wars-themed region of the park! The nearby Disney California Adventure Park is also full of attractions like my personal favorite, the 3D “Soarin’ Over the World” and the Incredicoaster.

Best activities & experiences in Orange County:

  • For an unforgettable Orange County experience, take a sunset helicopter tour like I did!
  • Can’t get enough whale watching? Consider this whale watching excursion from Newport Beach.

Enjoy the quaint charm of its boutiques, art galleries, and museums of downtown La Jolla (also known as “The Village”) or take advantage of the pristine beaches. Be sure to head to La Jolla Cove for a picnic and a picturesque afternoon at the beach, or join a kayak tour to take it all in.

24. Gaslamp Quarter

The Gaslamp Quarter is a 16.5-block area at the historic heart of downtown. Fittingly, trolleys run back and forth to Gaslamp. The neighborhood’s huge variety of dining and nightlife has earned it the title of San Diego’s “urban playground.” From steakhouses to rooftop bars, every cuisine and social scene imaginable can be found in the Gaslamp Quarter. For a unique experience, join the GPS-guided GoCar tour !

25. Little Italy

This Little Italy neighborhood measures 48 square blocks, making it the biggest in the country. Here, take advantage of the Little Italy Mercato, which is the largest farmer’s market in San Diego. Best activities & experiences in San Diego:

  • Get a fantastic view of the San Diego skyline on a harbor boat cruise .
  • Explore sea caves via kayak with a guide .
  • Spend the day at the San Diego Natural History Museum .

death valley

Southern California is home to some of the most incredible deserts in the world. With badlands, sand dunes, springtime wildflowers and superblooms to explore, these California deserts are worth a (non-summertime) trip.

27. Death Valley

Aptly named, Death Valley is the hottest place on earth (it would be wise to visit in the winter.) After watching the badlands change color at sunset at Zabriskie Point, check out the pink and green layered rock at Artist’s Palette, or go dune climbing at the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. Once the sun goes down, go stargazing at the Badwater Basin salt flats, which is the lowest point in North America. For an amazing viewpoint over all of Death Valley, head to Dante’s View.

The Mojave National Preserve and Monument is the third-largest national park in the contiguous United States, with more than 1.6 million acres of protected land. One of Mojave’s most famous attractions is its lava tubes, which create amazing photography opportunities when light beams shine through them at certain times of the day. Another great thing to do here is hike up to the rim of Amboy Crater for panoramic views of the whole desert. Travelers can also check out the Kelso Dunes, which are most stunning at sunrise and sunset.

29. Joshua Tree

joshua tree national park things to do

Joshua Tree National Park is home to the legendary Joshua tree, which is, unfortunately, dying out. Thanks to preservation efforts of the park, there are still plenty left to see in this protected habitat. A visit to Joshua Tree is the perfect way to spend a day or a weekend thanks to its desert topography. Here you can also do some stargazing and experience the Cholla Cactus Garden.

30. Anza-Borrego

font's point anza borrego

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park covers more than 600,000 acres of Colorado Desert terrain, wind caves, and rock formations. The park is a great home base to enjoy stargazing and its springtime wildflowers . At Anza-Borrego’s Font’s Point, you’ll witness one of the best sunrises in California. Here, the view goes all the way to the Salton Sea, as the sun rises over the badlands.

31. Alabama Hills

alabama hills sunrise

Alabama Hills ‘ claim to fame is its history as an old Western filming spot. But there’s more to the Alabama Hills than the cowboy stereotype. Rock formations like Mobius Arch, short hiking trails, BLM free camping, and wide-open skies are just a few more reasons that the Alabama Hills’ desert landscapes are worth a visit.

32. Palm Springs

This is certainly a different style of a desert, but a desert nonetheless! Palm Springs is perfect for those who love the dry heat of the desert climate but don’t necessarily want to take part in strenuous outdoor activities. Instead, Palm Springs visitors can golf, shop, and lounge by the pool all year long. To properly appreciate the unique plant life and biodiversity of the desert, check out Moorten Botanical Garden’s cactarium.

33. Salton Sea

For lovers of art and places in the middle of nowhere, the Salton Sea is one of the more remote suggestions on this list, and is full of surprises, including nearby Slab City , the Last Free Place in America.

Best activities & experiences in California’s deserts:

  • Explore the San Andreas fault from an open-air jeep on this adrenaline-pumping tour .
  • Ride a horse through Joshua Tree and spot buffalo along the way.
  • Hope on an aerial tram in Palm Springs to get some seriously impressive views.

Palm Springs is NOT a dry heat. Where do you people get your information?

Personal experience and facts. Palm springs humidity is 13% on average in June and 30% in December. That’s very dry.

15 Places to Visit in Southern California

trips in southern california

From sun-soaked beaches to snow-covered peaks, from a crowded amusement park to solitary hikes in a national park, from painted deserts to museums the celebrate street art, from dangling grapevines to towering palms, and from movies sets to stunning sunsets, these are the 15 must-visit spots that make up a quintessential Southern California itinerary when you’re ready to go from California dreaming to planning a dream vacation.

Courtesy of Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board

Come for the sun, stay for the stars, movie stars, that is. The entertainment industry is usually what first pops into mind when anyone mentions California and Hollywood is at the epicenter of the biz. Film buffs can hunt down locations IRL, find their favorite celebrity on the Walk Of Fame , and ogle the TCL Chinese Theatre ’s foot-printed forecourt. With any luck, you’ll be there on movie premiere day. Hike to the original Bat Cave, Hollywood Sign, and the observatory in Griffith Park. Tour studios like Warner Bros. , Paramount , and Universal . Pop in to admire the recently restored David Hockey pool at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt. Make like Leo and Brad by sipping martinis at the 100-year-old Musso & Frank . Famous graves and summer movies make Hollywood Forever cemetery a worthwhile stop as well.

Joshua Tree National Park

TripSavvy / Chris VR

With its surreal rock formations and spiky trees, it’ll feel like you’ve wandered into a  Star Trek  shooting location or a Dr. Seuss book when visiting this national park where two desert ecosystems meet, tarantulas and tortoises cross the street, night skies twinkle brilliantly, and influencers take their wide-brimmed hats out bouldering. From Keys View crest, you can see the infamous San Andreas Fault from above. Plan far ahead to get the pick of the campsites litter during high seasons (i.e. when it isn’t a million degrees).  Be sure to explore quirky surrounding towns where hipsters, cowboys, new age practitioners, and retired folks peacefully co-exist and run art galleries, diners, crystal shops, renovated motels , and a kickass all-ages concert venue/saloon called Pappy & Harriet’s .

Santa Barbara

Mark Weber/Visit Santa Barbara

Long the playground of the posh and famous—Oprah, who lives in the community next door, is the area’s patron saint, a gig she seemed to inherit from Julia Child—the picturesque enclave occupies a narrow crescent wedged between soaring ridges and the rollicking sea. It has all the trappings necessary for a successful long weekend: natural beauty, fresh air, pampering accommodations and spas, star-worthy cuisine that takes advantage of local delicacies like uni, finger limes, and spot prawns, arresting Spanish architecture, daily farmers markets, water sports, historical ( the mission , Chumash, cave paintings) and cultural ( Santa Barbara Bowl ) attractions, and shopping (State Street). And did we mention its wine country (see  Sideways ) and urban wine trail , which grow in size and prestige every year.

 Joshua Sudock/Disneyland Resort

How could we not include the original Disneyland on this list? It’s the happiest place on Earth after all. Especially after the pioneering 65–year-old theme park added a whole new land, Galaxy’s Edge, inspired by the Star Wars franchise in 2019. Now kids and kids at heart can mingle with Mickey Mouse, Caribbean pirates, the Little Mermaid, Woody, and Kylo Ren all in the same day while stuffing their faces with churros, Tiki Room Dole Whips, and blue milk. Extend your Anaheim stay to experience the companion park, Disney California Adventure (where they serve alcohol!), and the retail/dining district between them.

Brett Shoaf/SanDiego.org

The eighth largest city in the United States is no slouch in the tourism department. Its résumé flaunts 70 miles of scenic coast, 266 days of sunshine annually, the state’s best fish tacos, endless outdoor pursuits and urban delights, the second-ever certified carbon neutral airport in North America, and its hop-notch title as the Craft Beer Capital of America. That was earned with 160 breweries, 55 tasting rooms, a brewers guild, a beer week, various fermentation festivals, tasting tours, and a forthcoming museum. Its very southern positioning allows visitors to border hop to Mexico, by foot no less, for day trips while still hunker down at luxurious resorts like the Hotel del Coronado by night.

Miracle Mile Museum Row

Courtesy of Los Angeles Tourism & Convention Board

Learn something along this mid-city stretch of Wilshire Boulevard between Fairfax and La Brea Avenues encompassing LA’s Museum Row. The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is about to get a facelift, but much of its collection remains on display. It’s where Insta icon  Urban Lights , Chris Burden’s installation made of 202 street lamps, resides. The La Brea Tar Pits , still-bubbling pits of black goo where paleontologists have unearthed 3.5 million fossils, and their corresponding museum share LACMA’s complex as will the movie-centric Academy Museum (opening December 2020). Across the street, you’ll find Petersen Automotive Museum , a car collection worth heavy traffic, and the Craft Contemporary for folk art/crafts.

Palm Springs

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

It’s cliché, but true: Palm Springs and the cities that surround it are a FOMO-generating oasis of midcentury masterpieces ( Modernism Week is a design nerd must!), raucous pool parties, funky hotels, that pink door , decadent brunches ( Cheeky’s is a must!), vintage stores, bangin’ music fests, dusk tennis matches, and date shakes in a gorgeous but harsh desert. It’s where cool kid vibes meet old Hollywood glamour and where stressed-out Angelenos, the LGBTQ community, and frostbitten snowbirds seek escape. Downtown and the design district are pedestrian friendly and filled with numerous places to dine, drink, and dance. Craving a more spirited sojourn? Try riding the aerial tramway up to Mt. San Jacinto State Park or a bumpy dusty off-road Jeep tour .

Big Bear Lake

Chris Kaufman/Visit California

Seeking alpine adventure? Look no further than Big Bear Lake in the San Bernardino National Forest, a hundred miles northeast of LA. It promises four seasons of fun. Winter brings skiing, tubing, and snowboarding at Bear Mountain and Snow Summit . Spring and summer are perfect for fishing, swimming, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Enjoy leaf peeping and Oktoberfest in autumn. Thankfully, s’mores and cabin chills defy seasonal categorization and can be done in rentals that dot 22 miles of shoreline or at the sleepaway camp chic Noon Lodge . Families can partake in a ropes course, the zoo, escape rooms, bowling, go-karting, and pastries at Sister My Sister Bakery in the village.

Balboa Park

Melanie Stocker/SanDiego.org

The National Historic Landmark founded in 1868 is San Diego’s Central Park equivalent. (Actually, it’s almost double the size.) Within its 1,400 verdant acres, it boasts 19 gardens, 17 museums and cultural institutions covering science, nature, photography, art, local history, and aviation, 10 dedicated performance venues, the world’s largest outdoor pipe organ, and one gold standard zoo . From Arctic foxes to endangered zebras, it’s easy to spend an entire day admiring the 650-plus species. If the kids still have energy to spare, there’s a miniature train, vintage carousel, and very tall observation tower. A museum dedicated to the city’s annual Comic-Con will soon join the roster. It’s also a great place for a picnic, a round of golf or lawn bowling, or taking a dance class .

Downtown Los Angeles

There was a time, not so long ago, when no one went downtown for fun with any regularity. Not residents, and certainly not tourists. A trip to DTLA usually meant you scored Lakers tickets or a jury duty summons. Now, it’s the most happening part of town, a city center the city has long lacked, with critically acclaimed dines ( Bestia , Majordomo, Guerrilla Tacos ), buzzy watering holes ( Birds & Bees , Everson Royce Bar ), green spaces, street art, immersive experiences, food halls, galleries and retail ( The Last Bookstore ), theaters and music clubs, art museums like The Broad (Yayoi Kusama!), a new soccer club and stadium where matches are pure spectacle, and an explosion of new hotels at a variety of price points ( Wayfarer , The Ace Hotel , InterContinental , Proper ). It also reflects the population’s diverse makeup as its borders engulf Chinatown, Little Tokyo, the Latino-heavy Westlake, and districts dedicated to fashion, art, flowers, finance, jewelry, and produce.

Huntington Beach

Christian Heeb/Visit California

The name is a bit of a misnomer considering Surf City USA is comprised of five distinct beaches stretching uninterrupted for 10 miles and providing beginners and pros alike with consistent year-round swell. If you’ve ever wanted to learn, it’s a great place to take lessons. Or simply watch the seasoned ride waves under the pier or at summer’s Vans US Open , the world’s largest surf competition. Over at Dog Beach, even pups shred. Further immerse yourself in board culture at the museum, the walk of fame, surf shops, and in diners where surfers tell tall tales over fat breakfast burritos. If hanging 10 isn’t your jam, the wide swaths of sand are perfect for sunset viewing, sandcastle building, barbecues, bonfires, and, of course, long walks on the beach. Camping at Bolsa Chica is fun but so is staying at a resort like Paséa with its beach butlers, hoodie robes, and tranquil spa.

Courtesy of Ojai Trail Riding Company

There’s something magical about this rural town in the foothills above Ventura. Maybe it’s the bucolic splendor of massive oaks, fragrant citrus groves, the craggy creekbeds, lavender farms, steep surrounding mountains, and clarity of light, which results in a regular sunset spectacle colloquially nicknamed “the pink moment.” Perhaps it’s the unexpected vibrancy of its main street, dining scene, arts programming, and maker community. (You can find local takes on honey, beard oil, craft beer , jewelry, kombucha , candles, toiletries, pottery, olive oil , and dreamcatchers.) Possibly it’s the diversity of lodging that appeals as guests can choose from a historic Five Diamond , upcycled motels , quaint B&Bs, or a collection of Airstreams . Or it could be the simple fact that people still smile at strangers as they pass on sidewalks and the world’s largest open-air bookstore can operate on the honor system. Probably all of the above.

Catalina Island

Carol Highsmith/VisitCalifornia

Twenty-six miles across the sea, the island of romance with tropical trees and salty air is waiting. So goes the 1957 pop song about of the only developed member of the Channel Islands archipelago. Happy to report not much has changed since chewing gum heir William Wrigley owned the place. There’s still one main town (Avalon) punctuated by a striking 1929 red-roofed Casino, walking is the most used mode of transportation, taffy is sold at the shop where Marilyn Monroe worked, and buffalo, descendants of a herd brought over for a 1920s movie shoot, still roam the backcountry alongside an adorable fox only found here. It’s just now you can see them while on a bio-fueled Hummer safari after zip-lining, scuba diving in crystalline waters, or sipping signature Buffalo Milk cocktails at the beach club.

The Flower Fields At Carlsbad Ranch

Evgeny Yorobe Photography/Courtesy of Visit Carlsbad

Every spring (approximately March to May), this Oceanside burb in San Diego’s North County explodes in a rainbow of ranunculus rows. The Flower Fields, family run for generations, is 50 acres of social media goals thanks to sunset wine tastings, teas, yoga wagon rides, an orchid greenhouse, a maze, more poinsettia species than you ever knew existed, a vintage playground, and staged vignettes tucked among the blooms. Many of Carlsbad ’s best bars, restaurants and hotel spas create cocktails, dishes, and treatments inspired by the attraction for the annual Petal To Plate promotion. And with the 2020 opening of the destination’s first hotel that overlooks the crops, The Cassara , it has never been easier for petal pushers to maximize their visit.

Venice Beach

Neighboring Santa Monica, Venice became one of California’s original tourist destinations more than 100 years ago when Abbot Kinney used his deep pockets and imagination to construct Italian-inspired canals, islands, a saltwater lagoon with gondolas, shopping colonnades, and a roller coaster. Today, some of the pull is the same—canals with ornate bridges (although not Kinney’s), a pier, grade-A dining, great shopping on the founder’s namesake boulevard, cafes, street performers, and festivals. Other draws came with time as new bohemians, skate punks, bodybuilders, rich folks, artists, and tech bros all claimed the eclectic neighborhood as their own. The intermixing makes for phenomenal people watching, especially along the boardwalk, in front of dispensaries, and at the Muscle Beach gym and skate park.

A 7-Day Southern California Road Trip Itinerary

The open road cutting through Joshua Tree Park in the rugged desert of California during a road trip

I’ve been on many road trips around the US over the years. It’s by far my favorite way to explore the country.

One state in particular is perfect for road-tripping: California.

Occupying much of the West Coast, California is home to almost 40 million people. Here visitors will find high mountains, giant trees, scrubby deserts, green valleys, stunning beaches, and vibrant cities. It’s its own little country in some ways.

Since California is so big, I’m going to do a series of posts that cover road trips in the state, as it’s better to focus on smaller areas so you can really soak up and enjoy each region. In travel, less is often more.

To kick off the series, here is a one-week itinerary for Southern California:

Table of Contents

Days 1–2: Los Angeles

Days 2–3: san diego, days 3–5: joshua tree national park, days 5–7: sequoia national park & kings canyon national park, day 7: head back to los angeles.

Looking out over Los Angeles from behind the Hollywood sign

The city has a lot to do. Here are some of my personal favorite activities:

  • Stroll down Hollywood Boulevard – Don’t miss the Walk of Fame (where celebrities have their names engraved on the sidewalk) and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre (featuring stars’ handprints and footprints).
  • Visit LACMA – With over 150,000 works, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is the largest art museum in the western US. It has collections from pretty much every era throughout history and every region of the world. Admission is $25 USD.
  • Hike to the Hollywood Sign – While you can snap pictures of the sign from pretty much anywhere in town, it’s also possible to hike up to the sign itself to take in the view. The three trails (from easiest to hardest) are the Mt. Hollywood Trail, the Brush Canyon Trail, and the Cahuenga Peak Trail.
  • Browse The Last Bookstore – This is one of my favorite bookstores in the world. It sells books and records, has art displays, and features a cool upstairs area with cheap books. Browse the shelves, grab a coffee, and buy a book!
  • Hit the beach – There are a lot of awesome beaches in and around Los Angeles. Some of the best are: Venice Beach, Carbon Beach, Santa Monica State Beach, Huntington City Beach, and El Matador.
  • See the Getty Museum – Opened in 1997 as part of the massive Getty Center, this museum has a diverse collection of paintings, manuscripts, drawings, and other artwork from the eighth century to the present day. Admission is free.
  • Go hiking – LA has a lot of hiking trails, so it’s easy to connect with nature. Some worth checking out are the Charlie Turner Trail (90 minutes), Baldwin Hills (30 minutes), Runyon Canyon (45 minutes), Portuguese Bend Reserve (3 hours), and Echo Mountain (3–3.5 hours).
  • See the Le Brea Tar Pits – These natural asphalt pits are located in Hancock Park and have existed for upwards of 50,000 years. Tons of fossils, preserved for centuries, have been found in them. The museum has lots of interesting information about the pits and how they came to be. Adult admission is $15 USD.

For more things to see and do, here’s my complete guide to Los Angeles .

WHERE TO STAY

  • Banana Bungalow Hollywood – A chill, laid-back hostel that’s super social and organizes lots of activities.
  • Freehand Los Angeles – This hostel/hotel features designer rooms with comfortable beds, a rooftop pool and bar with amazing views of the city, a lobby bar, a restaurant, and even a fitness center.

For more suggestions, here’s my complete list of favorite hostels in Los Angeles!

The skyline of San Diego as seen from over the bay

Here are some things to do during your visit:

  • Tour the USS Midway Museum – This aircraft carrier was the largest ship in the world until 1955. It saw action in numerous conflicts before being decommissioned in 1992 and turned into a museum. You can explore the flight deck as well as many of the rooms below. Admission is $32 USD. You can get your ticket in advance here .
  • Have fun at Belmont Park – This kitschy amusement park is right next to the ocean and perfect for some cheesy fun. It has a few classic rides as well as games and lots of greasy (and delicious) food and snacks.
  • Go surfing – Whether you’re a veteran or a newbie, grab a board and hit the waves. There’s some awesome surfing here. You can usually rent a board for around $60 USD a day. 90-minute lessons cost around $150 USD.
  • Visit the San Diego Zoo – Located in Balboa Park (see below) and with over 3,500 animals and 700,000 plant species, the San Diego Zoo is a massive, 1,800-acre park where you could easily spend an entire day. It’s one of the best zoos in the country and a great choice for anyone traveling with kids. A one-day pass is $72 USD.
  • Explore Balboa Park – This is one of the oldest recreational parks in the US. In addition to the zoo, there are dozens of museums, as well as gardens, walking paths, sports fields, stadiums, theaters, and more. It’s a massive cultural center and green space with a ton to see and do.
  • Enjoy Pacific Beach – Head to Pacific Beach if you want to soak up the sun, surf, or go for a swim. The area is also known for its nightlife and offers lots of bars, clubs, and restaurants.
  • Go whale watching – Between December and April, California gray whales migrate from Alaska to Mexico. They can grow up to 49 feet long and are incredible to see up close. Tours usually cost around $55 USD. You can book your tour here .
  • Hike Point Loma – This peninsula is where Europeans first arrived in California. You can walk out to the tip and enjoy the sweeping views of the ocean, visit the old lighthouse (built in 1855), and watch locals climb the cliffs of Osprey Point.
  • HI San Diego – This hostel organizes tons of events and tours, includes free breakfast, and has a big kitchen so you can cook your own food to save money.
  • ITH Adventure Hostel – This eco-hostel has a vegetable garden (and gives free veggies to guests), a recycling and compost program, and even backyard chickens. There is a lot of outdoor common space to relax in too.

For more suggestions, here’s a list of my favorite hostels in San Diego!

The iconic Joshua trees growing in the aria California desert

It’s an otherworldly spot, a Martian landscape perfect for hiking, camping, and escaping the busy cities along California’s coast. There are countless trails to enjoy, ranging from short and easy to multiday challenges. Some suggestions:

  • Ryan Mountain – A steep 3-mile hike offering some incredible views.
  • Wall Street Mill – An easy 2.8-mile hike that leads to an old mill used to refine ore during from gold mining.
  • Split Rock Loop – A quiet 2-mile hike with lots of neat rock formations.
  • Barker Dam Trail – A 1.1-mile loop offering a chance to see rabbits, bighorn sheep, and all kinds of birds.

The park is three hours from San Diego, and the visitor center has more information and trail maps. It’s only $30 USD for a seven-day vehicle pass, which is good for multiple entries in case you stay outside the park itself. If you plan on visiting multiple national parks on your trip, it’s best to get an America the Beautiful national parks pass. For just $80 USD per year, you’ll gain entrance to national parks and other federal recreation sites. It’s a great value!

WHERE TO STAY Airbnb is the best option here if you don’t have your own camping gear, although there are also glamping and more rustic options around the area too. If you want to stay in an RV, check out RVshare , an affordable sharing economy option for renting RVs.

Massive redwood and sequoia trees in Sequoia National park in California, USA

The park itself is composed of towering redwoods and sequoias, some of the biggest trees in the world. I’m talking trees so thick you can drive a car through them and so tall that you can’t see their crown!

Start things off by visiting the Giant Forest Museum to learn about the geography, history, and importance of the park. Afterward, walk Big Trees Trail, a short loop that will get you in and among the trees. It also has the largest single-stem tree in the world, “General Sherman”!

For a sweeping view of the forest, hike up Moro Rock. Standing 250 feet tall, it’s a massive granite dome that juts out of the surrounding hills and forest. Stairs and a viewpoint were built into the rock itself so you can climb to the top safely and enjoy the magnificent vista.

While you’re here, visit nearby Kings Canyon National Park, a mountainous park with beautiful lakes, valleys to hike, and spectacular views. It’s also where you can see “General Grant” (the third largest tree in the world). For a scenic drive, cruise the Kings Canyon Scenic Byway, a narrow road along the side of a mountain that offers more picturesque views of the rugged landscape.

Admission is $35 USD for a 7-day pass that covers everyone traveling in the vehicle.

WHERE TO STAY There are lots of places to camp here, both inside and outside of the parks. However, if camping isn’t your thing (it’s not really mine), there are plenty of lodges and hotels in the area. You can find them via Booking.com .

After that, it’s back to LA. It’s only a 3.5-hour drive, so if you’re not in a hurry, enjoy the desert views and stop along the way if you see anything that piques your interest.

California is a huge state with unlimited road-tripping potential. And while there are a million different routes you could take for a seven-day trip, I think this itinerary covers some of the best of SoCal.

Book Your Trip to the USA: Logistical Tips and Tricks

Book Your Flight Use Skyscanner to find a cheap flight. They are my favorite search engine because they search websites and airlines around the globe, so you always know no stone is being left unturned!

Book Your Accommodation You can book your hostel with Hostelworld as they have the biggest inventory and best deals. If you want to stay somewhere other than a hostel, use Booking.com as they consistently return the cheapest rates for guesthouses and hotels.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it, as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:

  • Safety Wing (best for everyone)

California Through My Lens

21 Best Hiking Trails in Southern California

Through running this blog, I am often asked, “What are the top places to hike in Southern California?” While this is a tough question answer, it is petty easy for me to narrow down my current favorites. That being said, California has a ton to offer the hiker, and even though I have been hiking here for years, I am sure others will be added to this list as I have the time to discover them. So, in no particular order, here are my ten favorite hikes in Southern California. Add your favorites in the comments.

The Hollywood Sign

trips in southern california

Nothing says California like a trip up to its quintessential landmark, the Hollywood Sign.  This hike  will take you through the Hollywood Hills, past the old Batcave from 60’s TV and up behind the Hollywood Sign.  You can’t get any closer than 30 feet to the sign, but it is really amazing to see a part of history up close and to get views of Los Angeles with the sign in front of the city instead of behind it. You can also hike it from the Wisdom Tree trail as well.

Devils Punchbowl

trips in southern california

On the other side of Mt Baldy in the town of Pearblossum, there is a park called Devil’s Punchbowl that was created by the movement of the Earth thousands of years ago. The landscape has rocks that jut up from underneath the ground and provide a rare beauty that looks out-of-place next to the surrounding desert. The rocks can be climbed or just enjoyed, depending on your preference. It makes for a unique place to spend an afternoon with plenty of additional hiking trails .

trips in southern california

There are great summits in Southern California like San Gorgonio and Cucamonga Peak, but for me, it doesn’t get better than Mt Baldy. For the people only wanting the experience, you can take the tram to the top and walk the 8 miles round trip to the summit; however, for the hardcore, you can take the Ski Hut Trail. This trail, while only 8 miles, will take you up and back over 4000 feet of elevation — a real grind. The view from the summit is second to none. A must-hike in Southern California.

Sturtevant Falls

trips in southern california

I love this hike because it is as easy or as hard as you make it. You can hike it attached to the Mt Wilson Summit Trail and make it a 15-mile loop, or you can just hike to Sturtevant Falls and back to make it a casual three-mile walk. The trail to the falls is one of the more beautiful in the LA area, as there is a pristine stream that hugs the trail and lots of little cabins along the way. Seeing the waterfall at the end is a fantastic icing on the cake.

The Slot in Anza Borrego

trips in southern california

The slot is one of the most unique hikes in California, which makes it memorable. Located in the often overlooked Anza Borrego State Park,  the slot hike brings you down into a slot canyon and lets you walk through it for about a half mile. At some points the canyon gets so small you have to go sideways to get through, as the ceiling continues to rise until you are at about 75 feet below the canyon wall. At the end, there is even a small arch connecting the two sides (as seen in the above photo). It is a must do for the adventure seeker, but is only accessible via a hard to find dirt road.

Barker Dam in Joshua Tree

trips in southern california

Barker Dam  is one of the more accessible hikes on the list; it is about a mile and a half loop. The beauty of this hike is not to be underestimated though. There are hundreds of rocks you can climb on, a dry creek bed, old history from cattle ranchers and even Indian petroglyphs at the end.  In a National Park that has many attractions, this has to be one of my favorites.

Bridge to Nowhere

trips in southern california

One of the most popular hikes in Southern California,  this hike to the famous bridge   will take you 5 miles back and forth across multiple river crossings to reach a bridge that was seemingly built in the middle of nowhere.  This bridge was part of a road at one point in time, but now since the road has washed away, it is just a bridge all by itself. Oh yea, and you can bungee jump off of it! An excellent hike for the summer as you are bound to get wet.

Escondido Falls

trips in southern california

This hike is located right off Pacific Coast Highway, near the beautiful Point Dume . The Escondido Falls hike is a four-mile trek that takes you to the three tiers of Escondido Falls. The first tier is beautiful,  but press on to the third tier if you can . The third tier drops over 100 feet and has a moss-covered exterior that is truly beautiful and almost impossible to photograph fully. Be warned: it requires some risky climbing to get to the third tier, so do not attempt it if you think you cannot make it.

San Jacinto from the Tram

trips in southern california

Located only miles from Palm Springs, San Jacinto tops out at over 10,000 feet like Mt Baldy. What makes this hike epic is that you get to ride the Palm Springs Tram up 8,000 feet before you hike from the drop off point to the summit 6 miles away. You may think this hike is easy because of the tram, but it is still a challenging hike at high elevation, so make sure you bring a lot of water. If you are not up to push to the summit, there are also a lot of beautiful things to see just walking around the many loop trails that start from the tram drop off.

Cowles Mountain

trips in southern california

Cowles Mountain in San Diego   is not a super unique hike compared to other hikes on this list, but it is one of the local favorites and a great way to get a workout and see some beautiful views. What makes it so intriguing to hikers is that it gives you unparalleled views of downtown San Diego, Coronado, and even Tijuana, Mexico if it is a clear day. It is also the tallest point in San Diego.

Potato Chip Rock

Potato Chip Rock

One of the lesser know hikes in San Diego, this hike goes all the way to the top of Mt Woodson; however, the summit is not why people hike here. The main attraction is this massive rock right below the summit that has a potato chip-like curve that you can walk out on. It is fun to get a picture here and just to check out the beautiful views. Even though it looks small in the picture, it is not in real life. Check it out for yourself and read about Potato Chip Rock here .

Murphy Ranch

Murphys Ranch 3

Does it get crazier than a hike, only 20 minutes from downtown LA that takes you to an old abandoned Nazi Camp in Pacific Palisades? This hike has a lot of urban decay, which is usually not something I like seeing on a hike but for the fact that it has so much crazy history, it is unique here. There is also a crazy set of stairs that go straight down the side of a mountain. Read my massive post on Murphy Ranch here .

Big Horn Mine

Big Horn Mine from above

I love this hike nestled in the mountains above Wrightwood, mostly because it is an easy hike for people who haven’t hiked much but has such a cool payout at the end with this 80-year-old abandoned mine. The mine is in various levels of disregard, but it is still a great place to photograph or explore. Read more about Big Horn Mine here .

Cave of Munits

Cave of the Munits 22

This hike proves yet again that Southern California really does have everything! Nestled in the town of Tarzana, what starts as a slow walk quickly takes you into a chimney cave, out the top and across a ridgeline that is overgrown before ending at the top of Castle Peak with a beautiful view of the city below. Read about Cave of Munits here .

Torrey Pines State Reserve

Torrey Pines Reserve-11

If you are looking to experience the beautiful and unique world of coastal California hiking, then Torrey Pines is one of the hikes you must do. With crazy rock formations, spectacular views, and miles of trails, it is one of those places I go back to often.

Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak

trips in southern california

This hike, situated along the beautiful coast in Malibu is both a challenging hike and a fantastic example of the SoCal coastal scenery. It has some many fun things to see from the balancing rock to Inspiration Point. I cannot recommend it more, read my full post here .

Kelso Dunes

Kelso Dunes 17

One of the most massive sand dunes in California, the Kelso Dunes are a must-hike for every adventurer. This hike is not easy because the sand can be brutal to stand on, but how often do you get to see the above view and feel that massive sense of accomplishment? There are a lot of hikes in the Mojave National Preserve, but this is my favorite. Read more about the Kelso Dunes here .

The Rings Trail

Rings Trail 16

My favorite trail in the Mojave National Preserve, while not difficult, this short hike is stunning. It starts slow, but once you pass the hillside and go back into the Mojave, you will be wowed by the crazy scenery. As you climb your way out with the old rings, I am sure you will enjoy this hike as much as I did.

Ranchos Palos Verdes Shipwreck Hike

Shipwreck Hike 4

Hiking to the wreck of the Greek Dominator in Ranchos Palos Verdes is a unique hike. It is coastal, so it is over rocks then entire time, but it ends with a lot of ruins from the shipwreck that you can see right on the beach. Some people do not like it since it is over rocks and slow going, but I found the payoff and history to be super fun.

Echo Mountain Ruins

Echo Mountain 28

While the hike itself is mostly just a long uphill climb, the payoff at the top is pretty awesome. When you get there, you will be immersed in history as you explore the ruins of a once-grand mansion built on the hillside. It also serves as a beautiful vista over the city below.

San Gorgonio Peak

trips in southern california

While this peak should not be taken lightly and one should train extensively to do it, it is one of the premier hiking trails in Southern California and it leads to Southern California’s tallest peak. If you are interested in doing it, read more about it here .

You can also check out my big list of Southern California waterfalls  and best California day hikes for additional hiking ideas.

So there you have it, my favorite hikes in Southern California. Now it is your turn. What did I leave off that you think should be on the list? Leave it in the comments.

5 Days in Southern California Itinerary

Heisler Park Views looking over Main Beach in Laguna Beach

Before You Go

Here is a meticulously planned five days in Southern California Itinerary for your next big getaway, but first you need to rent a car. We recommend renting a car with Expedia in advance!

Also, if you don’t already have travel insurance, you will want to get travel insurance! You never know what can happen, I had to use my travel insurance on a trip when I had to be hospitalized for food poisoning! The bill would have been nearly $7,000 had I not had coverage!

Southern California Itinerary Day 1 – Los Angeles

Hollywood Sign Los Angeles

Ok, now to start your adventure and 5 days in Southern California! Despite the cliche, no Southern Californian road trip can be complete without a stop at Los Angeles, the city of angels.

It is a star-studded city ideal for long drives, with its wide roads and scenic views.

For lovers of a comfortable pace, varied culinary experience, and picturesque hikes, this is a must-visit place to get the thrill of a lifetime.

What to Do:

There’s a lot of activities that you can partake in to check off the items from your 5 Days in Southern California itinerary.

Since you have the whole day here, you can easily check-off every single one of these activities or explore some of the other best things to do in Los Angeles for more ideas.

Take a walk on the wild side at Hollywood Boulevard . This world-famous boulevard has the iconic Walk of Fame, and the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, one of the spots displaying celebrities’ handprints and footprints in a 15 block area of over 2,500 stars!

Visit LACMA , The Los Angeles County Museum of Art . This museum features over 150,000 works from all eras of American art and history. For only $25, you can take a stroll through the past and witness the origins of the American Dream plus the famous art installations outside!

Do the Hollywood Sign Hike for the best photos. No trip to LA is complete without an up-close and personal view of the Hollywood Sign. The sign is a symbol of the American film industry’s art and glamour. The trails that go up to the sign are the Cahuenga Peak Trail, the Mt. Hollywood Trail, and the Brush Canyon Trail.

Look around The Last Bookstore . This titanic book store is like something out of a movie. It has an impressive collection of books, records, and art displays. Scan the bookshelves and immerse yourself in a world of art and literature.

Have a beach day. There is nothing better than basking under the sun of the notorious sunshine state on its pristine beaches. Some of the most popular beaches of LA are Santa Monica Beach , Venice Beach , and further south in Orange County, Huntington Beach. Or check out our guide to the best beaches in Los Angeles for more ideas.

Take a look at the Getty Museum . The Getty is an arts museum with an artifacts collection that ranges from mid-century paintings, scroll-like manuscripts, and contemporary art. And the best part about it? Admission is completely free and also gets you access to the Getty Center , not to be confused with the museum, which offers some of the best views of Los Angeles !

Have a fun afternoon or early evening hike – If you’re looking for a connection to nature, LA’s myriad hiking trails are perfect for you. Echo Mountain is the longest and most challenging trail, whereas Baldwin Hills and Charlie Turner Trail is a common choice for tourists.

Don’t miss out on the Le Brea Tar Pits . These are asphalt pits dating back tens of thousands of years

Los Angeles has countless food options across many different cuisines. I recommend you check out Sugarfish for some of the best sushi platters. Another fan-favorite is the Butcher’s Daughter which offers a full plant-based menu.

Where to Stay

  • Comfort Inn Los Angeles – Just like the city, this space is chill, easy-going, and tourist-friendly. The hotel is a great budget-friendly option.
  • Freehand Los Angeles – The Freehand offers the complete Hollywood glamor. Enjoy a luxurious stay with full access to a rooftop bar and a gorgeous pool overlooking the city.

Here’s a pro-tip: remember that Los Angeles traffic is heavy, and places in the city are far away from each other. One of the best places to base at is Santa Monica as there’s so much to do here from being right on the ocean to all the attractions, shopping, and dining available here.

If you’re taking the highway, the traffic will add to your driving time. So plan accordingly.

They have a friendly and qualified staff that will guide you according to your level and experience.

If not, we recommend driving around the park and enjoying the short hikes!

  • Los Angeles (Los Angeles International Airport -LAX, Ontario International Airport – ONT, John Wayne Airport – SNA, Hollywood Burbank Airport – BUR, Long Beach Airport – LGB)

How To Rent a Car In Southern California

Now, what you want to do during your Southern California road trip will depend on what kind of car you should rent for the journey. Here are a few tips to know when trying to rent a car in Southern California:

Staying in B&B’s, resorts, and hotels? Rent a regular car. This kind of car fits easily in tight parking spaces (believe us, you’ll encounter those) and allows you to zip around town without a problem.

We recommend booking from RentalCars.com . They have the biggest selection of cars and prices, to fit your exact type of road trip!

Want to go camping and do outdoorsy things? Reserve an epic campervan with Outdoorsy . They’ve got a huge selection of vintage VW vans, sprinter vans, and RVs for your perfect outdoor trip. It will be a bit more of a challenge parking this kind of vehicle in the city, but this minor inconvenience is nothing when you think about all the money you’ll save sleeping in your car!

How Many Days Should I Plan for My Southern California Road Trip?

If you want to try and visit all the stops we will list in this post, we suggest planning a one-week Southern California road trip .

This will allow you to break up the trip into bite-sized pieces (aka not spending all day in the car!) and experience areas a little bit deeper than just passing through.

When Is The Best Time To Plan A Southern California Road Trip?

The best time to plan a Southern California road trip is during the spring and fall season .

This is because the wintertime can bring quite frigid temperatures in the desert, and then oppositely the summer can bring unbearable hot temperatures during the day.

Spring and Fall bring milder temperatures, which makes for a more comfortable southwest road trip !

There are several places to stop and explore along your road trip – I even wrote a comprehensive post about PCH hidden-gem road trip stops here .

Start your trip by checking out a famous Orange County attraction like Disneyland or coastal town like Laguna Beach . PCH actually starts in my beautiful hometown of Dana Point , which has lots of beaches and views. Then head up to LA, Malibu, and Santa Barbara and explore downtown.

As you continue north along the California coastline there are many natural wonders to visit. Stop in Palos Verdes on the coast of LA for some remote beaches. See the elephant seals at San Simeon. In the Monterey area stop by Pebble Beach and spend the day golfing. Or as you continue north check out the Bixby Bridge and famous rugged cliffs at Big Sur. Spend a night in Carmel by the Sea and explore the quaint shops and dining downtown.

2. San Francisco

End your Pacific Coast Highway road trip in the Golden City! Stop by Fisherman’s Wharf to dine, shop, and check out the famous sea lions at Pier 39. Grab a bread bowl at Boudin Bakery for some tasty sourdough bread. Spend some time exploring Golden Gate Park and end your day at Ocean Beach for a San Francisco sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

Spend another day driving across the Golden Gate Bridge. Enjoy impressive views of the city from the Marin Headlands. There are mountain biking and hiking trails in the headlands as well as many drivable viewpoints throughout this area. Then wind your way down to Sausilito, a cute town across the bay.

If you still want to head north after a visit to the city, take a drive up to Napa Valley. It’s only about an hour and a half north and is home to some of the most well-known California wineries. Hop on a hot air balloon ride to experience beautiful views of the wine region. Check out more SF fun facts or SF quotes for instagram.

Gigantic granite cliffs, mighty waterfalls, and plentiful wildlife all make up the beautiful park of Yosemite. Driving here from the south will be a bit long, but it will surely be a Southern California scenic drive once you get off the long-and-straight 5 freeway!

Check out some of the most famous rock formations in California; Half Dome, and El Capitan. Explore the high country, swim in an alpine lake, and look out for black bears, mule deer, and stellar jays; there’s a way for everyone to enjoy their road trip to Yosemite. Check out my article about where to stay and what to do in Yosemite in winter – also applicable all year round.

The U-shaped valley is a great spot to take an easy stroll through some meadows and look at the granite towering over you, or it’s a spot to start a challenging hike out of the valley up to the rim of the park.

Camp in the park or reserve a lodge or hotel to explore the beautiful area and visit at any time of year. The spring is famous for waterfalls and the summer for its full access. It’s one of the best places in California to visit for fall foliage , and the winter presents picturesque snowy landscapes.

11. Sequoia National Park

sequoia national park view california road trip ideas

Sequoia National Park is home to the largest trees in the world- the Giant Sequoias. This national park is most famously known for its massive groves of old-growth Sequoia’s, some as old as 3,0000 years. “General Sherman” is actually the largest tree (well, the tree with the greatest mass) in the world!!

But, the park also hosts varying environments as well as the trees. Deep canyons, marble caves, rolling foothills, and majestic mountains also make up this national park landscape. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the 48 states stands tall here at 14,500 feet.

Whether you’re a hiker, climber, or enjoy cruising in a vehicle this park has plenty of options making it a perfect southern California road trip option.

Also, while visiting don’t miss Moro Rock (pictured above). A short hike with carved stairs will take you on top of this large granite dome providing impressive views of the scenic landscape. King’s Canyon National Park is also just a short drive away. To learn more about the park head to the Giant Forest Museum.

If you check out the park from the east side you can access Mount Whitney from a long, difficult hike up to the summit. But if hiking isn’t really your thing, stop by Alabama Hills, located just west of Lone Pine. Alabama Hills was the setting for many famous wild west movies. It’s also a beautiful spot to picnic or camp and enjoy the impressive views of Mount Whitney from outside the park.

12. San Diego

la jolla beach san diego california road trip

I simply couldn’t leave out San Diego for a Southern California road trip option. With 70 miles of coastal beaches and a warm Meddeteraian climate year-round, this charming city is a wonderful spot to visit and to drive to from anywhere in SoCal. It’s also home to some of the best sunsets in the state.

Wildlife lovers should check out Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve or La Jolla Cove for a chance to see sea lions and seals – or even leopard sharks at the right time of year. If you visit La Jolla Cove during low tide check out the tide pools for a chance to see sea anemones, sea stars, and other marine wildlife. Torrey Pines is a great spot to hike along the steep coastal cliffs.

When in San Diego’s downtown district, enjoy a beer at one of the 150 craft breweries San Diego is famous for. For good surfy vibes head to Pacific Beach or Ocean Beach. Stop by Balboa Park to explore culture, science, and nature all at once at a museum, garden, or pavilion.

With numerous museums, parks, and attractions, San Diego is a great destination for those traveling with kids, wanting to explore history, see beautiful sights, or even attend a great music festival.

13. Ortega Highway Road Trip

ortega highway road trip southern california

Ortega Highway is one of the lesser-known Southern California scenic drives, but is amazing just the same. Stemming from southern Orange County and winding through rocky hills and mountains until reaching Lake Elsinore, Ortega Highway is truly a hidden gem and one of the best things to do in Orange County.

After driving 20+ minutes off the 5 freeway exit, you’ll start to feel like you are in the wild west – with tiny roadside stands and wooden shack candy shops on the side of the road every so often.

There are plenty of hikes and state parks to explore off of Ortega – but I mostly recommend Casper’s State Park. I have been here tons of times with my family, and the views never disappoint from riverbeds to ridges.

14. Anza Borrego State Park

anza borrego state park souther california

Many people love San Diego, but it takes a true adventurer to make it out in the desert inland of SD to Anza-Borrego National Park. For some reason it is lesser-known, but is worth visiting or at least driving through on a road trip of San Diego or SoCal.

This Southern California road trips hidden gem is like a mini-death valley, with colorful hills, incredible formations reminiscent of Bryce Canyon or similar, and great hikes. It’s also one of the few true dark-sky zones of southern California, so you can see the start shining VERY brightly here.

Amza Borrego would be a great stop on a road trip between San Diego, Orange County, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, and/or the Rim of the World Scenic Byway. If you have a few hours to spare driving inland, this desert is not to miss.

With so many year-round Southern California road trips to choose from, it’s time to get planning! Whether you prefer the desert, the beach, a big city, or a cute town there are plenty of options for all travelers to get out and explore the incredible places throughout California.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The University of Southern California’s decision Thursday to cancel its main graduation ceremony, a move that came 10 days after administrators said the student valedictorian who had expressed support for Palestinians would not be allowed to speak, left students and alumni stunned as  protests over the Israel-Hamas war  continue to spread on campuses nationwide.

“It seems like USC isn’t really listening to their student body,” said Olivia Lee, a 2023 business administration graduate who said she is rethinking whether to recommend the private university to potential students.

Videos of police officers in riot gear facing off, and ultimately arresting, dozens of protesters on campus left her worried about suggesting her alma mater to teenagers who may join similar demonstrations.

“Could that happen to them?” she said.

The protests over the Israel-Hamas conflict pose a tough test for colleges across the country as administrators seek to balance free speech and open debate against pressures over campus safety.

The USC controversy ignited April 15 when officials said the  2024 valedictorian , who has publicly supported Palestinians, could not make a commencement speech, citing nonspecific security concerns for their rare decision. Days later, USC scrapped the keynote speech by  filmmaker Jon M. Chu — a 2003 graduate of the university  — and said it would not confer honorary degrees.

By this week, the student protests ignited at Columbia University inspired similar on the Los Angeles campus, with students calling on the university to  divest from companies that do business with Israel  or support its ongoing military action in Gaza. Ninety demonstrators were arrested Wednesday night. Less than a day later, the university announced it would cancel the May 10 main graduation event -- a ceremony that typically draws 65,000 people to the Los Angeles campus — would not happen this year.

University officials said in a statement they would not be able to process tens of thousands of guests “with the new safety measures in place this year.”

“We understand that this is disappointing; however, we are adding many new activities and celebrations to make this commencement academically meaningful, memorable, and uniquely USC,” the statement said.

Taylor Contarino, a senior who will graduate with a journalism undergraduate degree next month, said there was “disheartening energy” on campus Thursday morning even before the university made its announcement. The school limited campus access to people with USC identification in the wake of Wednesday’s protests.

“I couldn’t help but feel like there was an elephant in the room,” she said. “We’re all walking past each other, showing our IDs to security guards.”

Contarino has wanted to attend USC since she was 13 or 14 years old, and she had planned to attend the main graduation event. But she said her work to cover the protests for Annenberg Media, a student-led news outlet, has reminded her of the importance of her major to witness and record history. She plans to return to USC in the fall for her master’s degree in journalism.

Lee, the 2023 graduate, said she initially didn’t want to wake up early for the main commencement event last year, but her friends convinced her to go. While students walk across the stage for their diplomas at the smaller school ceremonies — which are still scheduled to occur — she said the big ceremony was worth attending.

“It just made the day of graduation that much more special,” she said. “If I was to graduate college again, I would go.”

Lee agrees with the protesters’ call for USC to stop investing money in businesses that support Israel.

“We pay so much to be there,” she said. “I think that students have a right to know where their tuition money goes and is invested in.”

Joshua Adams planned to return to USC’s campus next year with his family to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of receiving his master’s degree in journalism. He called the university’s recent decisions to limit free speech “upsetting” and said he hoped alumni voices would help sway administrators.

Colleges and universities nationwide, including USC, tout themselves as champions of free speech, he said, but at the same time often shy away from defending pro-Palestinian views.

“We’re at an inflection point where students won’t accept that,” Adams said.
