Visiting the cascading beauty of Vazhvanthol near Thiruvananthapuram

 alt=

When the world was created, the god assembled the river sirens to assign them to various locations on earth. The most beautiful sirens were also the most pricey. They refused anything but the best. They stood aside until there were no routes left that did not involved the summits and depths of mountains. They became the waterfalls.

It is not difficult to see why someone thought of the telling folk tale when you are faced with the Vazhvanthol waterfall in Kerala. We take you on a trip to the cascading waterfall.

The bus to Bonacaud left the Thambanoor bus station in Thiruvananthapuram at 5 am. The sights of nature changed dramatically as we passed Nedumangad on the route. The contours of the Western Ghats emerged in the east. The early morning mist chilled the air.

The little explored haven at Anchuthengu near Thiruvananthapuram

An hour and a half into the journey, the bus reached Vithura, where I waited for Rajan, a local who promised to accompany me to Vazhvanthol.

We proceeded to Bonacaud past the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER) and the Vithura Jersey cow farm. We stopped at a forest department check post at Kanithadam. The road forks to Bonacaud and Vazhvanthol. The road to the left will lead you to the Bonacaud tea estate and to the Agasthyarkoodam bioreserve. Towards the right is the Vazhvanthol waterfall. We have to wait until 9 am for the forest road to the waterfall to open.

We decide to take a detour to Bonacaud. Any visitor has to seek the forest officials' permission to enter the tea estate in the middle of the forest. The department records the names and addresses of all visitors. The precautions are an apparent attempt to keep a tab on Maoist insurgents who try to sneak in and out of the state through the forest path.

The road to Bonacaud is through the Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary. The tall trees and the thick canopy block the slanting morning light. A cacophony of birds and crickets dominates the air.

The Bonacaud hill borders Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The forest has grown beyond the Peppara reservoir to the Agasthyarkoodam hill. The other side of the hill is Papanasam, Thenkasi and Kuttralam in Tamil Nadu.

The trees seem to pierce the sky. The greenery is soothing to the eyes. Giant creepers are festooned on trees like pythons. These creepers, called pullanji, used to be a vital source of drinking water for tribesmen traversing the forest. They could cut open the still fresh creepers and find as much water as they need. The creepers have another significant use in the forest.

When pursued by an elephant all you have to do is to find a tree with a lot of pullanji hung over it. These trees are so strong that even an elephant cannot uproot them, said Mohan, a friend of Rajan.

We were lost in the charm of the forest when we spotted the Peppara dam at a distance. We also spotted the bus from Bonacaud returning to Thiruvananthapuram. The paradise suddenly vanished as trees gave way to tea bushes. We have reached the fringe of the Bonacaud tea estate. We could see the peaks of the Agasthyarkoodam range.

The tea estate was set up by the British. It later went to the Mahaveer Plantations. The tea estate was eventually put under lock and key, depriving hundreds of labourers their livelihood. Many of them eke out a living by rearing cattle.

We reached the Bonacaud post office, near the old building that once housed the tea factory. The estate staff club has turned into a homoeo dispensary. Several houses and a path that leads up to a school complete the 'Bonacaud City.'

A road that goes around the factory leads up to the Agasthyarkoodam hill, which is open to visitors only during the Makaravilakku and Shivarathri festivals.

We walked up the road to the school. After the school, we walked past a church, a temple and a ration shop. We were treated to breathtaking scenery from the valley. We trekked more than 2 kilometres to the highest place at Bonacaud. In front of us rose the 25GB Bungalow, termed the most haunted place in Kerala.

We threw open the rusted iron gates and waited for the ghosts to make an appearance. We were disappointed. The bungalow was built for top officers of the estate to stay. The granite building built like an English mansion is crumbling. The bathroom is fitted with bathtubs and the halls have fireplaces. The largest attraction, however, is the view of the reservoir.

Back at the check post, Mallan Kankani was waiting for us. He will be our guide in the trip to the Vazhvanthol waterfall. He works for the Chathankod eco development committee which organises guided trips to the waterfall in association with the forest department. The entry fee is Rs 1,000 for a group of 10. You have to avail of the package to go to the waterfall.

The Vazhvanthol waterfall is in the valley of Bonacaud. You have to walk for 4 kilometres from the check point to reach the waterfall. The forests are elephant territory. The waterfall is a bit weak in the summer but it is the only time it becomes accessible. The waterfall will be dangerous during the monsoon months. The rocky road to the waterfall will be slippery and infested with leeches. The waterfall turns out of bounds for visitors during the monsoon months.

You can take your vehicle for a kilometre after the check post. We park our vehicle after passing the tribal settlements of Chathankod, Chembankala and Valiyakala.

The forest trek was easy in the beginning. We walked up a path flanked by eucalyptus and manjiyam trees on one side and bamboo on the other. The Vazhvanthod stream was flowing gently beyond the bamboo thicket. We spotted elephant droppings on the way and crushed vegetation. Mallan Kankani said that a herd of elephants had visited the area to drink water.

After about 2 kilometres, the path became narrower. In fact, there was no path at all. We climbed over rocks and mud on what seemed to be a narrow clearing in the forest. We came across a couple of caves on the way. One of them had two holes on its wall. The marks left behind by an elephant’s tusks, Mallan Kankani explained.

We were nearing the waterfall, judging by the increasing sound of water. But we were mistaken. A bit ahead on the road, we took a turn towards the stream. We spotted the Vazhvanthol waterfall that cascaded in three levels but we had to trek more to reach it. The sound we heard was of another waterfall.

We looked for a path to proceed but only an expert eye could find one. We took a break to drink water and munch on the snacks we had packed. We were at a rock face that stood like a border wall to the Vazhvanthod waterfall. The water that fell from the rock cascades down on another rock. We could take a dip in the shallow pool created by the waterfall. The break was refreshing.

We resumed the trek. We struggled to find the path but the roots of the trees acted as steps on the steep climb. You have to be extra careful on the fallen leaves. A slip would cost you dearly. After an exhaustive climb we reach the waterfall. The eternal waterfall has carved a deep tank on the rock bed. It is not advisable to go near it. The pool has been the venue of fatal accidents in the past.

The best time to visit the Vazhvanthol waterfall is between the monsoons. The waterfall is no less enticing in summer though.

The Vazhvanthol waterfall is 52 kilometres away from the Thiruvananthapuram city centre. From Vithura, you have to travel 19 kilometres to reach Bonacaud. You will reach the Kanithadam check post after 10 kilometres from Vithura. From there, it is only 6 kilometres to the waterfall. The last 3 kilometres are out of bounds for vehicles. Visitors are allowed inside the forest from 9 am to 2 pm. Even in the peak rainy season, entry is barred.

You can board a KSRTC bus from Thiruvananthapuram to go up to Bonacaud and Vazhvanthol. You will have to obtain permission from the forest department to drive private vehicles inside the forest area.

A bus leaves the Thambanoor bus stand for Bonacaud at 5 am daily. Buses leave from East Fort at 8:30 am, 2:40 pm and 4:10 pm, while return trips from Bonacaud start at 6 am, 7:45 am, 11:30 am and 1:40 pm.

Make sure that you carry enough refreshments and drinking water. There are no shops at Kanithadam or Bonacaud. Always bear in mind that you are entering an ecologically sensitive area.

Athirapally - The biggest waterfall in Kerala

The most beautiful waterfall of kerala - athirappally.

Athirapally Falls is located in Athirapally Panchayat, Chalakudy Taluk in Thrissur District of Kerala. The slow-running Chalakudy River originates in the Anamudi mountains and acquires vigor on nearing Athirapally, and falls down the 80ft rock and remains turbulent for 1 kilometer.  People call it the Niagara waterfall of India, as it's Kerala's biggest waterfall . It falls from a height of 80 ft and is 330 ft wide.

On reaching the Athirapally Waterfall entrance, there are shops and food joints; from there, one has to walk to view the waterfall. You can see the river flowing and fallingfrom the rocks to the steep valley. Again you have to trek downhill to get a clear view of the waterfall. It takes 10 to 15 mins to trek down the hills to get the picturesque look of the waterfall and the frothing water. The trip to Athirapally is incomplete without this downhill trek. Almost 7 million tourists visit this biggest waterfall in Kerala every year.

Travel Techies

Travel Techies presents to you some of the best hidden spots in Trivandrum city or the lesser known best places to visit in Thiruvananthapuram.

WATER FALLS

There are several waterfalls in Trivandrum. All of them are located along the hills of the north east.

Nature can be a very unforgiving place, and you need some specialized equipment and clothing to help you cope with most of the things Nature can throw at you.

General Checklist

  • Always carry leech repellents as you may encounter them out in the wilderness.
  • Day hiking shoes/boots The key feature of these shoes (and not just any ordinary sneakers or sandals) are that their bottoms have grip. This will allow you to more confidently tackle slippery or steep terrain.
  • Daypack These are good to store essentials for short term day hiking. Some are equipped with bladders for hands-free hydration while others have side pockets to hold water bottles easily within reach. The ones I like tend to have a few more pockets to store things like maps, guidebooks, flashlights, tick removers, journal, and even trail food. Some also have hip belts for a little transfer of weight to the hips though they’re not as effective as those with frames.
  • Handheld GPS These are good for trip logging but they can also be valuable when combined with a Topo map for any cross-country hiking or confirmation that you’re on the right path or you’re lost.
  • Hat This may be stating the obvious, but sunburn and the hidden risk of skin cancer from overexposure to the sun can’t be underestimated. Generally the broader the brim, the greater the coverage which might include the neck.
  • Light wool socks Not only are they good cold weather insulation, but even when your feet sweat, their moisture wicking properties reduce the likelihood that you’ll have blisters.
  • Compact flashlight You can never underestimate situations where your excursion lasted longer than you thought, even when the day turns to night and you can’t see a thing. That’s where these can come in handy to at least give you some sense of where you’re going. If you want to go hands-free then a headlamp may be the way to go.
  • Water bottle This is obvious, but if you really want to be eco-conscious than having your own reusable water bottle is the way to go.
  • Medical Kit You never know when you suffer a cut, a twisted ankle, a really annoying insect bite, a tick bite, or even things like a gash or bloody nose to name a few things.
  • Sunscreen If you can’t cover yourself up with clothing and protect yourself from the sun the old fashioned way, you could also apply SPF 30+ to ensure protection from harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun. Just be warned however that there are side effects from some of the more popular brands while the more organic ones tend to not lost as long. It’s a tradeoff you’ll have to weigh in the name of UV protection.
  • Sunglasses Cataracts (an eye ailment) is something that creeps up on you when you get older. You can decrease your chances of this with a decent pair of sunglasses. Some even feature polarization to cut some of the glare and make your vision even more contrasted than with just your own bare eyes.
  • Hand Sanitizer These can come in handy when you have no clean water to wash your hands with (you especially have to watch out for bacteria in rivers and streams). They can help you clean off dirt, residue from Nature calls, residual insect repellant or sunscreen, or other things you probably wouldn’t want to put in your mouth, nose, or eyes.
  • Meenmutty Waterfalls

Trivandrum has its own Meenmutty waterfalls (not to be confused with its namesake in Wayanad). The fall is located around 50 km from Trivandrum city, near the Neyyar reservoir area.

Athirappilly Water Falls | Niagara of India | Baahubali location | Athirappally

If you are ready to trek a few kms through the forest, Meenumutty (also Meenmutti) is the first in line to enjoy.

Strewn with large boulders, Kallar river bed adds to the wild beauty of the forest. Meenmutty is a multi tiered cascade, spectacular and serene.

Distances: Trivandrum – 46 kms Vithura – 9 kms

It is on the trek path to Agastyakoodam and the waterfall offers a unique experience.

  • Approach the Ecotourism office at Kallar(between Vithura and Ponmudi) to get the pass issued.
  • You may need a guide because the waterfall is a part of the forest.
  • Though beautiful, during rains, the waterfall pools are too dangerous to access.
  • The much anticipated water pool experience is not missed out as there is a bathing spot(bathing Ghat) at the start of the trek trail.
  • Arriving at the medium sized fall requires a good amount of trekking for around 3-4 kms from the main road, as no transportation is available that would take you to the foot of the falls.

2. Vazhuvanthol waterfalls

Vazhvanthol waterfall is a great location for a treknic (trek + picnic). The waterfall trail is only about 2.2 kms, nevertheless expect to reach the cascade in an hour. You will be amazed how little this awesome place is known. Other than keen nature enthusiasts, not a lot of people venture to here.

vazhvanthol waterfalls

Vazhvanthol waterfall is past Vithura in the north eastern part of Thiruvananthapuram district. Soon after Vithura is Theviyode junction. Take the deviation towards Bonacaud. Travel about 12 kms and you will reach the check post, where you have to take the entry pass. Vehicles travel a couple of kms from the check post.

Distances: Trivandrum – 53 kms Vithura – 16 kms

  • There are rocks to tackle and undulating terrains to get through.
  • Expect to be tired. The waterfall is such a refreshing presence that in a wink you will feel good again.
  • No need to put yourself at risk at the slippery areas because there are several other equally good pools where you can enjoy the freshness of the mountain stream.
  • Make sure to take food with you. No surprise if you feel very hungry after a treacherous trek. Again no surprise, if you feel to spend several hours here.

3. Bona falls

This is one of the least visited waterfalls in Trivandrum. Located deep within Agasthyarkoodam Biosphere Reserve, it is a treat to your eyes.

bona falls

Distances: Trivandrum – 59 kms Vithura – 24 kms

  • You need permission from the Forest Department to travel to this waterfall. The Forest Department will arrange a guide for your waterfall trek.
  • The contact is -The wild life Warden, Forest Department, PTP Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Tel: +91 471 2360762
  • Forest Department operates an information centre and a check post at Bonacaud. The guide will join you from there for a further 4 km hard core trek through the forest.

4. Kalakkayam waterfall

Kalakkayam waterfall, also known as Idinjar falls, is near Palode and has a couple of waterfalls. Since the waterfall is on Mankayam River, it has one more name – Mankayam waterfall.

Kalakkayam Waterfalls Trivandrum

Distances: Trivandrum – 44 kms Palode – 9 kms

  • The waterfall is easy to access and hence a popular picnic spot. Expect crowds during weekends and public holidays.
  • You may want to step on the rocks to reach the small pools at the bottom of the waterfall. These rocks are slippery and can take you down in an instant, especially during monsoons.
  • Rains in remote areas of the forest can cause flash floods. For these reasons, restrictions to pool entry are in place during monsoons.

5. Kurisadi waterfalls

Kurisadi falls  is the other cascade created by the same river – Mankayam. Similar to Kalakayam, Kurisadi waterfall is also a designated eco-tourism destination run by the Tourism Department. Kurisadi is a smaller fall.

kurisadi waterfalls trivandrum

Distances: Trivandrum – 45 kms Palode – 10 kms

  • The pool here is easy to access and not as risky as Kalakkayam.
  • The charm of the surroundings may entice you to explore further. In that case, the best thing to do is to join one of the treks organised by the eco tourism office at Kalakkayam waterfall.
  • You will need to keep aside sufficient time since these treks are either half a day or full day.

With the lakes and rivers just at the outskirts of the city, Trivandrum backwater tours can be easily combined with city travel as well as beach visits.

Hidden Places in Trivandrum

Hidden places in trivandrum: trivandrum’s lesser-known marvels.

Hidden places in Trivandrum: Welcome to Trivandrum, the city that is full of surprises! In this blog, we’ll try to discover some cool places that most people aren’t aware of. We’ll call them hidden places in Trivandrum. We’ll be saying the same thing a few times more to ensure you don’t forget!

Trivandrum is much more than busy streets and cool vibes. There are some hidden gems in the middle that we’ll explore together. Imagine cozy cafes that have interesting stories or tranquil parks that are like tiny natural pieces hidden in the urban sprawl. That’s what we’ll be talking about.

Today, Trivandrum has a mix of old traditions and modern atmospheres, and in between there are these hidden places. These spots might not be on the typical lists; however, they do add something unique to Trivandrum. If you’re a local looking to re-discover your home or a tourist looking for something unique, we’ve provided you with everything.

So, prepare to explore the outskirts of Trivandrum with us. We’ll shed light on places that are often overlooked but are worth taking the time to check out. The hidden places in Trivandrum may be quiet, but they’re full of amazing stories to tell. Let’s look around!

Table of Contents

There are many waterfalls in Trivandrum. They are all located in the hills to the north-east.

Nature can be a surprisingly harsh place, and you’ll need special equipment and clothes to help you deal with all the challenges it can bring.

General Checklist

  • Always carry repellents for leeches in case you encounter them out in the wilderness.
  • Boots for hiking: The most notable advantage of these boots (and not just your regular sandals or sneakers) is that their bottoms have a grip. This will allow you to easily navigate difficult terrain that is slippery or steep.
  • Daypack: These are great for storing the essentials for short-term hiking. Many are outfitted with bladders to allow hands-free hydration, while others have pockets on the sides to keep water bottles conveniently close to hand. The ones I prefer tend to have pockets that can be used to store things such as maps, guidebooks, flashlights, tick-removal tools, journals, and even food items for the trail. Some have hip belts that allow for the transfer of some weight to the hips, though they’re not as efficient as frames.
  • Handheld GPS: These are great for logging trips, but they can be useful when paired with a Topo map for cross-country hikes or to confirm that you’re following the correct route or not.
  • Hat: This may seem obvious, but the hidden risk of skin cancer resulting from excessive exposure to sunlight shouldn’t be undervalued. The larger the brim, the greater the coverage that could extend to the neck.
  • Light wool socks: Not only are they great insulation for cold weather, but even if you sweat your feet, their moisture-wicking properties lower the chances that you’ll develop blisters.
  • Compact flashlight: You can never undervalue the possibility that your excursion took longer than you anticipated, even if the day turns into night and you are unable to see anything. This is where headlamps can come in handy to provide a sense of where you’re headed. If you’re looking to travel without hands, then a headlamp may be the best way to go.
  • Water bottle: This is obvious, but if you want to be environmentally conscious, using a water bottle that is reusable is the best option.
  • Medical Kit: There’s no way to know if you’ll be afflicted with a cut, an ankle that is twisted, a truly painful tick bite, or things such as a swollen or bloody nose, to mention some of them.
  • Sunscreen: If you aren’t able to wear a robe and shield yourself from the sun in the traditional method, you can apply SPF 30+ to guarantee protection from harmful UV rays from the sun. Be aware that there are adverse effects associated with certain of the most popular brands, while the more natural ones don’t last as long.
  • Sunglasses: Cataracts are something that creeps into your eyes as you age. It is possible to lower the chance of having this problem by investing in a quality pair of glasses. Some even come with polarization, which can reduce some of the reflection and make your vision more contrasting than only your eyes.
  • Hand Sanitizer: These can be handy in situations where you have no fresh water in which you can wash your hands (you particularly need to look out for the presence of bacteria in streams and rivers). They can assist in the removal of dirt and remnants of nature calls, residues of sunscreen or insect repellent, and other items you would not want to put in your mouth or nose.

1. Meenmutty Waterfalls

Hidden Places in Trivandrum

Trivandrum is home to its own Meenmutty waterfalls (not to be confused with its name in Wayanad). The waterfall is located about 50 km away from Trivandrum city, near the Neyyar reservoir area.

If you are looking to hike for a few kilometers through the woods, Meenumutty (also Meenmutti) is the first in line to take in.

The large boulders that are scattered throughout the Kallar river bed are part of the natural splendor of the forest. Meenmutty is an impressive, multi-tiered cascade that is stunning and tranquil.

Distances: Trivandrum – 46 km Vithura – 9 km

It is located on the trekking path that leads to Agastyakoodam, and the waterfall offers an unforgettable experience.

  • Visit the ecotourism office in Kallar (between Vithura and Ponmudi) to obtain the pass.
  • You may require a guide as the waterfall is part of the forest.
  • Although beautiful during rain, the waterfall pools are unsafe to swim in.
  • The highly anticipated swimming pool is not to be missed because there is an ideal swimming spot (Bathing Ghat) at the beginning of the trekking trail.
  • The medium-sized falls require a lot of hiking for about 3-4 kilometers away from the main road because no transport is available to take you to the base of the waterfall.

2. Vazhuvanthol Waterfalls

Hidden Places in Trivandrum

Vazhvanthol waterfall is an ideal location for an excursion (trek or picnic). The trail to the waterfall is just 2.2 km, but you can reach the cascade in about an hour. You will be shocked at how little this amazing place is known. Outside of avid nature enthusiasts, there aren’t many visitors visiting this area.

Vazhvanthol waterfall is just past Vithura in the northern-eastern portion of Thiruvananthapuram district. Shortly following Vithura is the Viyode junction. Make a detour towards Bonacaud. You will travel for 12 km before you arrive at the checkpoint, where you must obtain the entry permit. Vehicles travel a few kilometers from the checkpoint.

Distances: Trivandrum – 53 km Vithura – 16 km

  • There are boulders to be fought over and undulating terrain to climb through.
  • Expect to feel exhausted. The waterfall is such a refreshing experience that, in a blink, you will feel refreshed.
  • There is no need to put yourself in danger in the slippery areas since there are many other excellent pools in which you can relax and enjoy the crisp mountain air.
  • Make sure you bring snacks with you. There’s no reason to be surprised if you’re extremely hungry after a strenuous journey. It’s no surprise if you find yourself spending a lot of time here.

3. Bona Falls

Hidden Places in Trivandrum

It is one of the least frequented waterfalls in Trivandrum. It is situated deep within the Agasthyarkoodam Biosphere Reserve, and it is an experience for the eyes.

Distances: Trivandrum – 59 km Vithura – 24 km

  • You must have authorization from the Forest Department to travel to this waterfall. The Forest Department will arrange a guide for your waterfall hike.
  • The contact is with the Wild Life Warden Forest Department, PTP Nagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. Tel: +91 471 2360762
  • The Forest Department operates an information center and a checkpoint located in Bonacaud. The guide will accompany you from the checkpoint for another 4 kilometers of hard-core hiking through the forest.

4. Kalakkayam Waterfall

Hidden Places in Trivandrum

Kalakkayam waterfall, which is also referred to as Idinjar waterfall, is near Palode and has several waterfalls. Because the waterfall is situated on the Mankayam River and is located near Palode, it has a different name: Mankayam waterfall.

Distances: Trivandrum – 44 km Palode – 9 km

  • The waterfall is accessible, so it is a popular picnic place. Expect crowds on weekends and public holidays.
  • You may be tempted to walk on the rocks to get to the small pools that are located at the base of the waterfall. The rock formations are slippery and can fall in an instant, particularly during monsoons.
  • Rainfalls in forests in remote regions can result in flash flooding. This is why restrictions on entry into pools are in place during monsoons.
