Tunisia Safari Tours & Holidays
Tunisia, officially the Republic of Tunisia, is a country in the Maghreb region of North Africa, covering 163,610 square kilometres. Its northernmost point, Cape Angela, is also the northernmost point on the African continent.
Often seen as simply a beach destination, Tunisia has a bucketful of surprising tourist attractions and things to do for those that venture off the sandy shores.
This is North Africa wrapped up in one bite-sized package. There are alleyways of pastel-washed houses and crowded souk streets to explore in the cities; ancient ruins to discover out in the countryside; and the vast desert expanse of the Sahara to the south with its sweeping dunes, craggy mountains, and hidden, palm-tree-filled oases.
Tunisia was Rome’s breadbasket, and the cultural riches the Romans left behind are more than enough reason to visit. But the history of the Arab Empires has also bestowed the country with some of the region’s most beautiful examples of Islamic architecture.
When you’ve craned your neck at Kairouan’s minarets and played gladiator at El Djem it’s time to head into the Sahara to sample the raw, empty beauty of the desert. The sun-soaked beaches of the Mediterranean coastline, fringed by palms and lapped by gentle waves, will still be waiting for you when you get back.

How to get to Tunisia
Tunis is the sprawling capital of Tunisia, a country in North Africa. It sits along with Lake Tunis, just inland from the Mediterranean Sea’s Gulf of Tunis. It’s home to a centuries-old medina and the Bardo, an archaeology museum where celebrated Roman mosaics are displayed in a 15th-century palace complex. The parklike ruins of ancient Carthage sit in the city’s northern suburbs.
Foreign visitors are able to access Tunisia by boat, via land border crossings from Algeria or Libya, or by air. It is possible to take a direct flight to Tunisia’s main airport, Tunis-Carthage International, from various destinations in Europe and North and West Africa.
Passport, Visa and Entry requirements for Tunisia
For stays of up to 3 months, your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay; you don’t need any additional period of validity on your passport beyond this.
Tunisian visa policy currently states that there are around 100 nationalities that can travel to the country without a visa if they are planning to spend short periods of time in the country for tourism purposes.
However, all other foreign nationals need a visa for Tunisia in order to travel to the country, no matter the purpose or length of the intended visit.
The health sector of Tunisia
Tunisia’s health care system includes three levels of care: primary, with a network of 81 clinics and 2091 basic health centres; secondary, with 109 district hospitals; and tertiary, with 33 regional hospitals and 24 modern CHUs, according to MoS figures. Meaning their health sector is pretty good but does not cover international travellers meaning you may need medical insurance in order to have access to the private health care services
Malaria and Yellow fever vaccination for Tunisia
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving from an infected area.
Although malaria has been eradicated in Tunisia since 1979, the disease is still a health issue due to the persistence of mosquitoes and coexistence with a potential parasite reservoir in the form of imported cases.
Currency of Tunisia
The Tunisian dinar is the official currency in Tunisia, subdivided into 1,000 milim or millimetres. However foreign currency can be used in Tunisia like Euros and American dollars and also credit cards can be used in many tourist attractions.
Official Language of Tunisia
Tunisia is essentially a bilingual country: Arabic is the official language, with French as its second language. English is widely taught in schools, so increasing numbers of urban Tunisians speak it, as do many people in the resort areas.
A good grasp of French will make life much easier in Tunisia, but there’s no better way to make friends and impress people than to venture even a few words in Arabic.
Best time to travel to Tunisia
The best time to go to Tunisia is outside of summer in the spring (April/May) or autumn (Oct/early Nov). For sun-worshippers, July and August are absolutely sweltering. September also sees the sun but the beaches are less crowded.
What to wear in Tunisia
Travel in a Muslim country is very different from Europe or North America; dress modestly and cover up away from your resort hotel.
During the day it’s hot, so our advice is to pack lightweight, loose-fitting clothes in natural fabrics such as linen, silk, bamboo and cotton that will keep you cool and are easy to wash and dry.

Top Equatorial Guinea safari destinations
The animal population of Guinea is fortunate, since they inhabit a country where nature continues being as spectacular as it is virgin, but also where development permits taking the appropriate measures for their preservation in the future.
More than a hundred different mammals make up this fauna: small antelopes, pangolins, felines… The country is especially rich in diversity of primates: gorillas, chimpanzees, mandrills, colobus… But in Guinea, you can also find some samples of large mammals such as elephants of the jungle, hippopotamus, bush pig, and the manatee.
Also numerous are the species of reptiles and amphibians, and four species of sea turtles that frequent the coast stand out.

Tunisia Travel
Officially known as the Tunisian Republic, Tunisia is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in North Africa and is a fantastic getaway destination for travellers. Steeped in history and packed with diverse natural beauty, this tiny country offers plenty to the discerning traveller. Along with the sandy Meditteranean coastline and its beaches, the country boasts a varied landscape defined by the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert, forested coastlines, shimmering salt flats, and bustling cobblestoned streets filled with the scent of jasmine and sea breeze.
Libya borders Tunisia to the south-east, while Algeria lies to the west of the country. The extensive network of roads in the country provides access to all major cities and towns, including smaller villages. Additionally, the country has 29 airports. However, Tunis Carthage International Airport and Djerba–Zarzis International Airport are the two major airports in Tunisia. Popular tourist attractions include the capital city of Tunis, the Muslim and Jewish quarters of Jerba, and the ancient ruins of Carthage. There are stunning coastal resorts just outside of Monastir, as well as many hotels and other accommodation options with modern amenities.
Tunisia may be small, but the country is a melting pot of culture and diverse landscape and boasts a powerhouse of attractions for many tourists. With a balmy Mediterranean climate, golden sandy beaches, forested coastlines, and the alluring Sahara Desert, travellers can explore the ins and outs of the country in a matter of days. The main drawcard for tourists is the stunning stretches of sandy beaches along the Mediterranean coast, with the clear waters at Plage de la Mansoura the most popular. Sun-seekers can soak it up on the Cap Bon Peninsula, while culture vultures can explore the Roman quarry at Ghar el-Khabir.
For the adventurers, the vast Sahara Desert awaits, and there are numerous tour operators that organize activities such as camel riding, 4WD experiences, jeep safaris, and more. For those staying at a resort in Hammamet, Sousse, or Monastir, there are endless activities on offer. From windsurfing and parasailing to waterskiing, snorkelling, and exploring the pristine underwater kingdom with a diving safari, there is something for sun and sea-seeker.
Hiking and biking in the forests of the Kroumirie Mountains around Ain Draham have been become popular in recent years, as the area has grown into a trekking destination. Hikers can book a trekking expedition with a knowledgeable guide, cyclists need to be self-sufficient. Bird watching is another drawcard as Tunisia is home to a few rare bird species such as the Audouin’s gull, as well as the Levaillant’s woodpecker and Moussier’s redstart—both of which are endemic. Winter beckons the migratory waterfowl, so avid birders should heat the wetlands of Ichkeul National Park—a UNESCO World Heritage site found in the north of Tunisia.
The wildlife and birdlife of Tunisia are exceptional and boast some of the rarest species of fauna and flora in the world. The relatively small country has approximately 84 mammal species and 375 species of birds. Along the coast, travellers can expect to see whales and dolphins, including bottle-nosed dolphins and rough-toothed dolphins, while Bou Hedma National Park in the southern region of Tunisia is home to wildlife such as Dorcas gazelles, addax antelopes, and Barbary sheep.
In the opposite direction, Lake Ichkeul National Nature Park is defined by Lake Ichkeul, swampland, seasonal rivers and a mountain. Due to its location as an important stopover for many migratory birds, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1980. Over 200 species of birds call the park home, and these include flamingos, ducks, storks, and geese, as well as the rare greylag goose.
Tunisia is a popular tourist destination along the Mediterranean coastline and boasts a plethora of accommodation options to suit every traveller. From guesthouses and rural farm stays to luxurious resorts with all-inclusive packages and five-star hotels, travellers will want for nothing. Combining modern facilities and the age-old facades of some of the Tunisian architecture, travellers to this part of North Africa will not be disappointed.

Tunisia is characterized by three climate types. The northern part of the country boasts a Mediterranean climate and is perfect all year-round. For a beach getaway, the best time to visit is between June and August. However, from April to June and again in September and October, the temperatures are cooler, and the beaches are less crowded. High season at the beach resorts occurs during July and August, but the Saharan tourism shuts down due to the soaring temperatures in the desert.
In the central region, the climate is semi-arid, while further south, the area experiences a hot desert climate and is best visited in October and November when the temperatures are cooler and more comfortable.

Tantalising Tunisia
£2,750 pp sharing
At a Glance
Dates : October 8th - October 17th, 2023
Extension : We do not currently offer any extensions to this itinerary.
Prices : £2,750 pp sharing (with no single supplement), excluding flights.
In a sentence : Native wildlife, including barbary sheep and fennec fox, combined with the re-introduced addax and scimitar-horned oryx make this itinerary a real treat for the experienced naturalist.
For many travellers from Continental Europe, Tunisia is most commonly associated either with sunshine getaways or Star Wars. And whilst this charming country certainly does boast several film sets from that famous franchise, and the beaches are hard to pass up in the depths of a European winter, there is an awful lot more to Tunisia than meets the eye. This narrow coastal belt of land is actually full of variety, from steep cliffs to open savanna to rolling sand dunes. The only commonalities throughout the country are the warm greetings and open arms that meet you wherever you go, making Tunisia our very favourite destination in North Africa.
For birders, the rich Mediterranean coastline is the place to start any exploration of Tunisia, with seabirds recorded in good numbers even close to the capital of Tunis. This rocky habitat is also a good area for keen mammal-watchers, with rodents and bats found in surprising densities in undisturbed areas. Further inland, savanna surprisingly appears before desert, with some areas more reminiscent of East Africa than North Africa., and it is here that we find fascinating species including Africa's only deer species, the Barbary stag (a subspecies of red deer) as well as wild boar and red fox. As the savanna becomes punctuated by steep scree slopes, Barbary sheep will become a key target, but the highlights are arguably even deeper inland. Towering dunes protect enigmatic fennec foxes and sand cats, but are also where addax and scimitar-horned oryx, extinct in the wild, have been carefully re-introduced.
El Feidja NP
On arrival into Tunis, you will be met by your Pictus Safaris representative and local guide. From Tunis, we will first head a short distance north-east to the scenic Cap Bon. This lovely peninsula is a wonderful and surprising introduction to what many think to be solely a desert country. With the Mediterranean sprawling out before us, the birding here is consistently excellent but, if time permits, the chance to visit several bat caves is a great opportunity to spot our first mammals of the trip.
By early afternoon, we will begin our drive west, almost all the way to the Algerian border, to our accommodation. We will overnight in a basic guesthouse in El Feidja NP.
Today allows us a full day to explore the little-visited El Feidja National Park. Dominated by thick woodland, the park could scarcely be further from the common conception of what Tunisia should look like. The star attraction here is the booming population of Barbary deer, Africa's only deer and a subspecies of the red deer more usually seen in Europe and Asia. The best way to explore the park is on a series of hiking trails, which meander between clearings, and the deer should be found easily enough. Wild boar and African wolf can be glimpsed here with a bit of luck and, provided the mist doesn't close in, the birding can be rewarding. We will likely spend the full day in the forest before returning to our basic guesthouse for the night.
Bou-Hedma NP
We leave El Feidja early this morning, driving deep into Tunisia's interior to Bou-Hedma National Park. We aim to arrive by mid-afternoon, giving us a chance to settle in to our basic campsite before an evening drive. As the heat of the day dissipates, we will head out to explore this spectacular park, staying out into the hours of darkness with spotlights. We would certainly categorise this as a savanna park rather than a true desert ecosystem, and we hope to pick up Dorcas gazelle and Rueppell's fox this evening. The real draw here though are the small re-introduced populations of addax and scimitar-horned oryx - these are arguably two of the rarest and most charismatic species on the entire continent, and spending time with them is a real privilege.
We spend a final morning with the rare wildlife in Bou-Hedma today, before continuing to the town of Gafsa where we spend the night.
After breakfast in Gafsa, we make a beeline this morning for Tunisia's most famous national park - Jbil. Reaching the park in time for a late lunch, an afternoon drive is a great way to introduce ourselves to this, the gateway to the Sahara. The dunes here come alive at night, though, so we suggest a night drive of several hours. With the diligent use of spotlights and a thermal monocular, we hope to reveal species including lesser Egyptian jerboa, fennec fox and Rhim gazelle. The most hallowed sighting here is the ultra-rare sand cat, which persist in tiny numbers in this corner of Tunisia.
Today is broken into morning, afternoon and night drives, with our key targets being the supremely adorable fennec fox and the elusive sand cat.
Oued Dekouk & Tataouine
Our day is spent mostly at the small natural reserve of Oued Dekouk. Our quarry here is the Barbary sheep, of which a few dozen are regularly spotted high up on the scree slopes here. After staking out this productive area for several hours, we continue on to the town of Tataouine for some rest.
Sidi Toui NP
The final national park we visit on this itinerary is certainly the wildest. Not too far from the border with Libya, the towering dunes of Sidi Toui make it hard to get around but protect some of the rarest and most stunning wildlife in North Africa. We have three key targets here - sand cat, fennec fox and wild cat. All three are skittish here due to poaching, but we will put serious effort in today and tomorrow to find these iconic species.
We have a full day to explore Sidi Toui, heading out well before sunrise, and again after sunset, to maximise our chances of spotting nocturnal wildlife.
We head to Djerba today to meet your outbound flights.
Please be aware that whilst we make every effort to follow the above itinerary as closely as possible, circumstances may occasionally arise that mean the tour deviates from the itinerary.
Dates and Prices
This tour will run in October 2023, aiming to avoid the blistering heat of the summer and the snow of the winter. The tour will run from October 8th to October 17th.
The cost of this trip is £2,750 per person excl. flights. This includes all meals, accommodation and wildlife-focussed activities. There is no single supplement for this tour. To secure a booking, a deposit payment of £1,100 plus any single supplement must be paid.
Flights and Visas
Pictus Safaris do not offer flight booking services. However, we do recommend the use of travel comparison websites such as skyscanner.net or momondo.com to identify the best fares, and then booking with the airline directly where possible. This will reduce the likelihood of complications and fees should any issues with your booking arise. If you wish to spend an additional night in Djerba at the end of your tour, we can arrange this for you at an extra cost.
British nationals do not require a visa to enter Tunisia. Clients of other nationalities are advised to check well before travel whether they require an entry visa. Please ensure your passport is valid for at least six months after your departure from Tunisia and has at least two blank pages. You may also need to provide documentation confirming you have received a Yellow Fever vaccination.
Weather and What to Bring
The weather in the Tunisia in August is warm with some rain showers, with maximum temperatures of around 26 degrees Celsius. At night, temperatures will drop to around 16 degrees Celsius, although it will feel much colder than this during night drives - be sure to pack warm clothes.
A full packing list will be circulated at least two months prior to departure. Pictus Safaris will be able to provide one extra set of binoculars and two spotlights per group, and clients are welcome to bring additional camera, videography and scope equipment should they wish to. Please note that the use of drones is not permitted in many protected areas. We strongly recommend bringing comfortable, loose-fitting and neutral-coloured clothing on safari - please do not bring camouflage clothing. We recommend against dark coloured clothing (e.g. black or dark blue) as this attracts biting flies. Worn-in hiking boots with ankle support are a must, as are sunglasses, sun protection and a hat.
Do also remember to budget for any expenses not included in the cost of the trip, including for gratuities and additional activities. We recommend bringing Euros.
Safety and Security
There are currently no security concerns in the areas visited by this trip.

The south of the country is generally targeted and if you are lucky enough to taste one of these experiences, here are some attractions which you simply must see. Just don’t forget to pick up your car hire insurance!

It doesn’t matter whether you have hopped on a safari jeep, or if you’re just looking for someone to visit for a day – El Jem must be placed somewhere on your holiday’s itinerary. It’s one of the premier attractions of Tunisia, with this being one of the best preserved amphitheatres in the world. In its peak it could hold up to 35,000 spectators and unlike most ruins, it’s still possible to wander round and explore the architecture of the monument.
For those that want to get into deep Tunisian culture, Matmata is another area that is frequently visited by the jeep safari teams. It’s a Berber speaking town and with just over 2,000 inhabitants based there, it’s tiny to say the least. Most of the homes there are underground caves although over recent years many of the locals have realised the value of the tourist industry, and it’s now possible to eat in numerous restaurants.
Ksar Hadada
For those Star Wars fans out there, a trip on the jeep to Ksar Hadada should not be missed. This is the derelict location where scenes of The Phantom Menace were filmed and suffice to say, this has made it one of the most popular tourist traps in the country.
Ksar Ghilane
With Ksar Ghilane situated approximately 100km into the Sahara Desert, it’s no surprise that this is an attraction which is usually only reserved for the jeep safari experiences. It’s essentially an oasis surrounded by red sands, although for those visitors who want to reap something extra from their trip it’s also possible to go quad and camel riding.
Bir Soltane
This might appear like something of a bizarre experience, because really it’s as simple as it gets. Bir Soltane is a small coffee shack in the middle of the desert and while this might sound a little mundane on paper, words can’t really give it justice. The local coffee is something else, while admiring the desert sands is even more tantalising.
If you’ve taken the effort to head out on a jeep safari, then a visit to Douz simply has to be in order. This is classed as the “desert capital” of the whole country and anyone who wants to taste Tunisia at its most traditional form, in the way of a local oriental market, won’t be disappointed. There are also attractions for those that want a little more zest as well, with quad biking and paramotor flights available.
Chott El Jerid
This is another one of the filming locations for the Star Wars franchise, although this is not the immediate lure for Chott El Jerid. Instead, it’s the natural beauty of the area, with this being the largest salt lake in North Africa. It’s possible to take umpteen reminders back home with you as well, with many souvenirs such as desert roses and dates being available to purchase.
Fatnasa is known as a Dunes sanctuary and is utterly picturesque. Again, it’s one of those attractions that is only really accessible through a jeep safari and if this isn’t enough for you, we should also point out the fact that it’s possible to have your photo taken with a live scorpion. There are not many other places on earth where that can happen, safely.
Camel Mountain
This is perhaps one of the most intriguing attractions of the country; especially when most people associate Tunisia with camels anyway. In short, this is a salt lake landscape that has a mountain which resembles that of a camel sitting down. Naturally, it’s gathered plenty of media attention over the years and numerous films have been based with this in the backdrop.
Chebika is another attraction ideal for those who like to bask in beauty. It’s seen as one of the most picturesque attractions around, with the oasis providing tourists the perfect photo-taking location. As well as this, if you wander down the stream a little you’ll pass through the ruins of a Berbers’ village that was destroyed by treacherous rainfall.
Tamerza is very similar to the above and again provides tourists with spectacular views over water. This time it’s in relation to a canyon and waterfall and again, for those visitors that are camera-happy, it can create some perfect photo opportunities.
In the midst of a jeep safari experience, it can be difficult to find some of the religious attractions that Tunisia is quite often famous for. However, this changes in Kairuan, where it’s possible to visit the oldest mosque in North Africa. This isn’t something that just acts as a tourist trap for foreign visitors either, it’s one of the most symbolic places for Tunisian Muslims and subsequently attracts countless locals every year.
