Cape Town Travel Guide

by Anne Lowrey | Oct 9, 2018 | Top Selling Destinations

Table Mountain Cape Town aerial, South Africa

One of South Africa’s three capital cities, Cape Town is a cultural melting pot with a diverse population and a rich history. Travelers to the coastal city can make the most of its stunning natural setting—the omnipresent peak of Table Mountain is the biggest draw, while Cape Peninsula to the south offers miles of white sand beaches, ocean views, and surf-worthy waves. Cape Town’s many attractions are spread out over a large area, and guided tours with seamless transportation help visitors see multiple sights in one day. For those with more time to spend in the area, day trips take in the nearby Cape Winelands or Robben Island, and multi-day tours set out along the famous Garden Route. You’ll find a mix of options in our Cape Town travel guides below.

Table Mountain

viator tours cape town contact number

The view from the 3,563-foot (1,086-meter) peak of Table Mountain—looking out over Cape Town, Table Bay, and the Cape Peninsula below—is as iconic as the mountain itself. Adventurous travelers can climb the peak on foot, but most opt to take the cable car, a scenic 5-minute ride. Wait times at one of Cape Town’s must-see sights can be over an hour at peak times, so skip-the-line tickets are a big plus, and many tours include hotel pickup and round-trip transfers too.

The idyllic vineyards and historic wine estates of the Cape Winelands are less than an hour’s drive from Cape Town, and they produce some of South Africa’s most prestigious wines. Visiting as part of a guided tour means that guests can enjoy wine tasting without worrying about driving—South Africa’s strict drunk-driving rules are widely enforced—and visit multiple destinations in one day. Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl are the most popular wine-growing areas, and many tours on this Cape Town travel guide include lunch at a winery restaurant.

Cape Town Super Saver: Cape Point Highlights Tour plus Wine Tasting in Stellenbosch

Ideal for first-time visitors to Cape Town or those short on time, this value tour combines the two most popular day trip destinations—Cape Peninsula and Cape Winelands—into one day.

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl Valley Wine Day Trip

This group tour visits the three main towns—Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, and Paarl—and includes wine tasting at each destination.

Viator VIP: Cape Winelands Meal and Wine Helicopter Tour from Cape Town

Robben Island

viator tours cape town contact number

Marooned off the coast of Cape Town in Table Bay, Robben Island is notorious for its maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela served the majority of his 27-year sentence during the apartheid era. The prison and grounds were turned into a living history museum in 1997. Tours typically include ferry rides to and from the island, as well as a guided bus tour of the island, which stops at the prison buildings, lime and bluestone quarries, military bunkers, and Nelson Mandela’s cell.

Day tours from Cape Town typically include major points of interest such as Hout Bay, where boats set sail for Robben Island; Boulders Beach, famous for its colony of African penguins; the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve; and Chapman’s Peak Drive.

Any Cape Town travel guide would be incomplete without including a few safari adventures. Although Cape Town has unique urban flair, South Africa is home to natural beauty that should not be missed! Many safari adventures leave directly from Cape Town, and usually come in full-day or multi-day tour variety. Even those spending just a day or two in Cape Town should consider a safari option.

Cape Town Travel Guide: Things to Know

What to bring.

Clients planning on a multi-day Garden Route tour or visit to the Klein Karoo should pack warm layers as temperatures drop dramatically at night.

When to Visit

Summer (December through February) is high season and when temperatures are at their hottest. Visiting in spring and autumn is ideal, with fewer crowds and more favorable rates. Whale watching season along the coast is July to September.

Getting Around

The best way to get around Cape Town is via car, and it’s recommended to either hire a rental or join guided tours. Metered taxis are available, but there are no taxi stands so it’s advisable to keep the number of a reliable taxi service at hand. Uber is also an option.

What the Locals Know

Most travelers make a beeline for the V&A Waterfront, but locals head to the Woodstock neighborhood, full of hip cafes, shops, and restaurants. Visit on Saturday, when the Old Biscuit Mill hosts one of Cape Town’s coolest markets, or take a food-focused tour to learn more about the city’s so-called rainbow cuisine.

Local Customs

English is widely spoken here—with a dash of local lingo. South Africans say “sorry” instead of “excuse me,” use “oh, shame,” as a term of endearment, call traffic lights “robots,” greet people with “howzit?,” and use “izzit?” instead of “really?”

Is it a good idea to buy for trips now from Viator or should I just book it when I get there? I’ll be arriving on August. Cheers!

Viator does not always have the same spectrum of activities you might find once you are there. So I might suggest if you have things you know you want to do for sure, to book them on Viator, but for days you are not 100% sure, see what is available at that time.

Viator is connected to Tripadvisor. You will need to look at who the tour operator is who you will end up with doing the wine day tour. Then from there you can have a look at the reviews of that operator.

The Viator Experience Awards is a new annual program designed to rank top experiences around the world, setting a new bar for the best things to do and see. The final rankings are based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings from adventure-seekers around the world during the 2021 calendar year. All bookable experiences with a Badge of Excellence that meet the requirements above were considered in each of the 11 regional geographies for this inaugural launch.

Despite a few very challenging years for the travel industry, City Sightseeing Cape Town has stood out to travellers and provided an exceptional experience.

“The entire Cape Town City Sightseeing family is over the moon to receive these awards. We are acutely aware that most visitors who entrust their valuable time to us, have spent months saving up for their trip. This drives us to make sure that every single visitor has had the BEST time, with lots of happy memories and has fallen in love with Cape Town,” said CEO of City Sightseeing South Africa, Claus Tworeck.

The Viator platform has more than 300,000 bookable experiences onsite. Serving as a new hallmark of the best experiences to book, this first round of Viator Experience Awards recognizes 220 experiences, tours and activities in 11 geographic regions, ranking the top 20 per region.

"With two years of thwarted travel plans in the rearview, we're seeing extraordinary enthusiasm for the season ahead," said Laurel Greatrix, VP of Brand and Communications, Viator. “As travelers venture out in greater numbers than ever, we're excited to introduce the Viator Experiences Awards — and elevate the best-of-the-best tours, activities, and experiences the world has to offer.”

We were picked up on time at the city-bus tour stop very close to our hotel and brought to meet the tram line in Franschhoek which then took us around to wineries on our allocated ‘Burgundy’ route (there was also a bus route section). … We got a lunch along the way at Boschendal (also at our own cost) – Good meats and cheese and nice looking bread … and we finished off with a shared gin tasting at Bartinney – spectacular views at this estate and from their tasting shed. Great too that the tram staff took care of purchases and had everything ready for pick-up at the end of the day, so nice not to have to cart things around with us. A Tassie Must-Do.

A wonderful day on the water, with a knowledgable and happy crew. The small craft allowing max 12 passengers keeps this experience more friendly and intimate. We enjoyed excellent food and drink from the moment we stepped on board, and for the first time witnessed a diver search for abalone and sea urchins. We stopped by a colony of sea lions as well.

Guided Hiking Tour in Colorado…

Guided Hiking Tour in Colorado Mountains Andrew was an excellent guide. The group consisted of casual/non mountain hikers. Andrew was patient with the entire group. He is very knowledable guide. The view at Panorama Point was incredible. We were surprised to find out it was 3.5-mile hike and my husband struggled a bit with the higher elevation. The hike is done at a casual pace with plenty of stops along the way.

For those who can’t walk fast and/or…s

For those who can’t walk fast and/or climb multiple flights of steps in a short time, the White Cliffs of Dover/Canterbury trip might not be suitable. In the Canterbury segment, it would have better to offer participants the option to spend the entire time self-guided so lunch and shopping in the quaint shops could have been included. We had a fantastic bus driver! Personable, efficient and safe. So sorry I can't remember his name right now but I'm sure the tour operators can determine and hopefully will recognize him appropriately.

Hi, Thank you for your feedback. Viator takes all customer feedback and concerns about their experiences seriously. Each supplier's customer satisfaction ratings are reviewed and addressed directly with that supplier. We have taken note of this complaint and would like to apologize that our service did not meet your expectations on this occasion. Kind Regards, Viator Social Engagement Team

Greg makes the tour even better.

Our guide, Greg, was exceptional. We loved our day in the Blue Mountains, we loved that our experience was private and custom to our wishes moment by moment, so the whole trip was going to be great just on those facts alone. But there is not doubt that Greg's personality made the whole experience 100x more fun. He was fantastic.

Extremely reliable and enjoyable!

We booked three tours through Viator while on a cruise in Japan. They were extremely reliable and each guide was very accommodating and pleasant. So much nicer to do a private tour rather than be herded along with the buses from the ship. Highly recommend Viator tours while traveling abroad!

Never use this company!!

Awful experience, never use this company! We had tickets for a tour of the Alhambra and they emailed us at 8pm the night before saying our tickets were cancelled due to some technical glitch, then refused to answer any further emails! Total sham, avoid at all costs!! Would advise to book any tickets for Alhambra through the official website, which doesn’t always come up on google searches and isn’t even in some of the guide books - it’s the Alhambra Patronato website. Tickets here are a lot cheaper and also guaranteed.

Hi Sarah, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We apologize for the inconvenience caused by this delay. Last-minute cancellations are not standard practice with our tour operators. If the booking must be canceled, suppliers are required to provide adequate notice to Viator. We will be addressing your concerns directly with our supplier. In the meantime, we have issued a full refund to your now canceled booking. We again would like to apologize for the delay in your refund. We hope that the remainder of your trip was both a pleasant and memorable one. Kind Regards, Viator Social Engagement Team

Five Texans in Athens

We hired a driver and guide through this service. We were able to customize the tour to accommodate sites we had already visited. Driver showed up at our hotel early and was courteous and knowledgeable about Athens. Our tour guide gave us detailed information about the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus. The tour guide was excellent and gave us a deep dive into the history of Athens and Greece.

Miguel is a very knowledgeable and interesting tour guide. He is very passionate about history and shares it all to the minute detail Everything was seamless to get from metro to funicular to the cable cars. Only suggestion is for him to turn around when walking to make sure is older folks are keeping up.

Marakesh Hot Air Ballooning

The full experience of collection from the hotel, the hot air ballooning and Berber breakfast were all well organised. The pilot and crew gave a good safety briefing and helped eveyone with getting exceptional photos. As a sailor used to dealing with large sails I was very impressed with the landing and sorting the balloon after landing. We didnt do the camel riding a my wife has mobilitiy issues and returned to our hotel alittle early with others. Overall a great morning out and good value.

Paris in the spring time…

The excursions in Paris were timely and amazing! We had no problems using our tickets for each of the events. The one drawback was that I made an amendment to my trip and Viator did not inform the local tour guides and that trip was lost. Villa did refund the full amount but must do better on communicating amendments to, any of the events planned.

Perfect Day Trip

I had an amazing time on this tour! Mike(?) was an excellent tour guide, who provided interesting stories for each of the sites we visited. Super polite and professional, and also made a couple of impromptu stops just so we could see the koalas and kangaroos. Considering that my time in Melbourne was short, seeing the Great Ocean Road on this tour was the perfect opportunity to cross this off the list. Great views, great weather, great ocean, and great road all around.

We book 4 tickets for a bus tour in Stockholm for 72h and none of the bus compagnies agreed to let us in, the tickets were not valid, at the end of the day the ticket were gone on the app as if our journey was over even tho we still had 48h left to use it. We requested a refund and an explanation and none of it were given, it’s a shame to steal 200€. Worst compagne I’ve ever seen, save some time and buy your ticket on the real bus compagnie.

Fabulous Caminito del Rey

Fantastic trip along the Caminito del Rey. Meet point at the hotel near the southern shuttle bus stop and then driven by bus up to the start of the walk. Paolo was an amazing guide very knowledgable about the history of the route and the local area. Very impressed with how many languages he spoke and his sense of humour. Not that strenuous a walk and very safe, however some of the drops are stomach churning when you look down.

Our tour was unbelievable

Our tour was unbelievable! Dana had obviously done her homework and knew how to keep us moving and get us everywhere on time. She also had so much knowledge about the sites that made us feel like we were there. She definitely deserves to be rated at the top. Manuel did extraordinary driving. Can’t believe he moved in that traffic like that. They both did an excellent job!,

Amazing dinner cruise on Thames

Took my husband to London for his birthday and booked through Viator a dinner cruise on the Thames and so glad we did! lovely food, while sight seeing an illuminated London in a relaxed atmosphere would recommend, the one we went on wasn't very busy so we had plenty of room although I would imagine had it been full it would be quite cosy on board though. The singer on board was very good, and there is a dance floor on board to get up and dance to.

Trip to The Monastery of Poblet Tarragona, Spain. Using Viator

I booked on my small tablet while on holiday for a trip to the Medieval Village near Tarragona and to Poblet the monatery recently. I downloaded the tickets ok and a day before the trip to Village was cancelled due to lack of demand. I was worried about a rebate but received a full rebate to my credit card the day after. The Trip to Poblet went ahead and the driver was . great, very helpful. We had a great day, and the driver turned up on time and was really chatty and nice. I feel more confident about using Viator for any future trips.

I thought our tour guide was excellent…

I thought our tour guide was excellent today. He was informative, friendly and considerate and timed the tour so it was not rushed but moved along. Would only recommend if able to walk distances we covered around 2.5 miles which included some steps. All in all well worth doing, we saw and were told about things we would otherwise have missed.

Dependable sourcethe…

Dependable source for tours aroubd the world. Even with a last minute asthma attack, which meant I had to cancel an excursion, Viator worked with the local tour provider to cancel a tour and get me a full refund. I have recommended Viator to several friends who have had good experiences too!

Must do in Milan!

Our guide Flavia was well on time at the appointed place. The audio equipment was of good quality (even in the wind outside). Flavia explained passionately and with lots of interesting background information about the Duomo. Highly recommend booking this excursion!
