Diary Of A Solo Traveller On A Viking Ocean Cruise From Barcelona To Rome

by Sarah Wilson | Aug 29, 2022 | Europe , France , Italy , Spain , Travel , Viking Ocean Cruises | 26 comments

Last Updated on: 30th January 2024, 10:42 am

When the lovely folks at Viking invited me on a Viking ocean cruise from Barcelona to Rome , of course, I said yes. Then the panic set in. I hate being on water, I can’t swim, and I’ve seen the movie Titanic too many times. I know what could happen.

A few years ago, Jonathan and I enjoyed a two-week river cruise with Viking from Budapest to Amsterdam . I was nervous about doing that, too. Until they pointed out during the safety drill that in the unlikely event of the boat sinking, the top floor of the boat would still be above water. But that was not going to happen in the Mediterranean, though!

And this time, I’d be travelling solo.

However, I do enjoy the pure selfishness of solo travel- to do what I want when I want and not have to answer to anyone else. But on a cruise, yikes -I might be expected to socialize!

Before Joining Your Viking Ocean Cruise

viking ocean cruises single supplement

So having said yes to booking a cruise and before joining the Viking Ocean Cruise from Barcelona to Rome , it was time to download the  My Viking Journey  app to pre-book shore excursions, spa treatments, and make dinner reservations, etc.

Plans can be changed once on board if needed.

Electronic documents arrived about 14 days before embarkation.

Also, 14 to 45 days before departure, you receive personalised embarkation tags, a Viking luggage tag, and one red transfer sticker per guest if you are being picked up at the airport.

Diary Of My Journey Onboard A Viking Ocean Cruise From Barcelona To Rome

Day 1 – barcelona spain.

Didn’t sleep at all well last night. You know when you have to wake up early, you check your phone every hour to ensure you haven’t overslept before finally falling into a deep sleep five minutes before the alarm starts ringing. Yes, it was one of those nights.

The taxi arrived at 4:30 am, so bleary-eyed, I headed out to the airport. As I was changing flights in Frankfurt on the way to Barcelona, I only brought hand luggage with me to avoid worrying about losing baggage.

Since losing our luggage on the way to Argentina a few years ago, I no longer check luggage in; it saves so much time travelling light, but I digress.

My flight arrived on time in Barcelona around lunchtime. According to my arrival instructions from Viking, I was to place the bright red Viking sticker on me so the local representatives could easily spot me. Noooo, I can’t do that – I don’t like stickers, so I just held it discreetly in my hand to flash when necessary.

And it was very easy to spot the Viking representatives; they were everywhere.

A bus was waiting (there were about 15 of us arriving in Barcelona around the same time) to take us to the ship.

The journey from Barcelona El Prat Airport (the immature me loves that name!) to the cruise port terminal took around thirty minutes.

When we arrived, I saw a long line of people snaking out of the cruise terminal. My heart sank. But rejoice, we were being led to another building with no queue. I was checked in immediately and handed my keycard before I had even found my booking confirmation.

Before being allowed to your room, you had to go to your muster station for a quick safety briefing. Being a ship scaredy-cat, I paid great attention to every detail.

And then off to my cabin 6053.- a deluxe veranda stateroom on the 6th floor. And a very comfortable room it was indeed. I squeaked with excitement as I checked out every drawer, gadget, and corner of the room.

The large bed is insanely comfortable; there is plenty of storage; a safe that works, a coffee machine, toiletries – so much attention to detail. And a lovely balcony to sit on and watch the world go by.

I found the 24-hour room service menu, and I won’t deny the thought of staying in my cabin the whole week, and just ordering room service did cross my mind.

But with my stomach rumbling and an urge to explore, I soon found myself in the Pool Grill Bar, where I had an excellent burger.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

After my late lunch, I began exploring the ship – pondering the restaurant menus, browsing the spa menu, contemplating having a dip in the pool.

But being a cruise newbie, I wasn’t aware of how long it takes for your luggage to appear at your cabin. And somehow, paddling in the pool in your undies didn’t seem socially acceptable on a cruise ship.

When I finally returned to my cabin, there was a lot of reading to do – invitations for solo travellers dinner the next day, checking my tickets for shore excursions, and the  Viking Daily news.

Feeling exhausted from my early start and just a little hungry but not wanting a heavy meal – yes, I gave into room service on the first night. Just a glass of wine and nibbles on the veranda- I’ll be more sociable tomorrow- maybe!

Top Tip : Luggage takes a while to get to your room, so pack anything you think you will need on day one in your day pack.

Day 2 – Barcelona Spain

An early start today as I was joining the included tour of Barcelona. The included tours are very well organised and the start times are staggered, so you don’t have 900 people fighting to get on one bus simultaneously.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Due to the distance from the cruise terminal to the city, this included tour was partly by bus and partly on foot. The first stop was the Sagrada Familia, the incredible and visually stunning unfinished basilica. We only viewed the basilica, though, from the outside.

If you want to visit the interior, I’d recommend booking a ticket in advance or maybe joining a small guided tour with access to a tower of the Sagrada Familia .

From the basilica, the included tour also took us to the old part of Barcelona. I loved strolling through the Gothic Quarter’s small, windy streets with its beautiful Roman buildings, some of the city’s oldest churches, and the cathedral of Barcelona. A little free time was included here to wander at leisure.

But, if you want to spend longer exploring Barcelona, Viking cruises offer a complimentary shuttle bus from the World Trade Center to the ship throughout the day.

After a light late lunch buffet in the World Cafe, it was time for a full body massage. Well, I needed something to calm my nerves before we set sail.

The spa onboard is lovely, and very calming, and no spa sales pressure!

However, the compulsory alarm testing started halfway through my fabulously relaxing massage. It’s deafening.

I assumed I had to run to my muster station and grab a life jacket as we did on the river cruise. The poor masseuse struggled to hold me down as I tried to escape. Then I started having visions; what if the alarms were an actual warning, and I would drown right there, naked on the masseuse table?

It took a while for the poor masseuse to work her magic and get me back into that relaxed zen space again, and then all too soon, the massage was over.

That evening, a dinner was organised for the solo travellers on board in The Restaurant. Seven solos were on board – six said yes, and four showed up.

All four of us had recently lost a partner. So as the wine flowed, so did the tears.

After dinner, I headed to the Star Theatre to watch the Lee Bradley concert – a leading international operatic tenor. I have to confess, I’ve never heard of him, but he was very good.

Top Tip –  Book your entrance ticket in advance if you want to go inside the Sagrada Familia.

Top Tip 2 –  Don’t book a massage time when the ship sets sail for the first time; those alarms are very loud and definitely upset the zen ambience.

Day 3 – Sete, France

Bonjour Sete!

Well, it turns out it was smooth sailing all night. Fell asleep in Spain and woke up in France. I was beginning to understand the appeal of cruising.

I started the day with a delicious buffet breakfast in the World Cafe on the 7th floor.

Then set off on the included Sete walking tour. In Sete, it’s necessary to board a bus to get in and out of the port area. The buses run continuously throughout the day, so getting to and from the ship is no problem.

Once we were at the Port Gate, we were handed a town map. Yay, I love paper maps, and now I had the info on what to do and what to see in my hands.

I followed the group as far as the Central Market, but today’s group was large (37 in total). And yes, I know, it will probably be me in a few years – some were such painfully slow walkers, and I was just itching to venture out on my own. So, I did.

Sete – what a lovely little port town! I roamed the streets, did a little shopping, and sampled food in the market. I strolled along the Royal Canal, which links the Thau Lagoon to the sea and is the harbour gateway to the Canal du Midi.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Wandered up to the Upper District, where the workers who built the port used to live and is also the location of Saint Louis Church, the oldest and largest church in Sete.

I strolled along the pier to the lighthouse with views over the old harbour before finally walking alongside the canals to La Pointe-Courte, a cute district where the Thau Lagoon fishermen were based.

By 3 pm, with more than 18000 steps on my FitBit, it was time to head back to the ship, where I enjoyed another yummy burger in the Pool Grill. Well, after all those steps, I had earned it.

Later, after a slightly longer siesta than expected, I enjoyed a gin and tonic in the Explorers Lounge.

Dinner tonight, for me, was the French buffet in the World Cafe. But I discovered the sushi bar and never actually made it to the French delicacies.

Bit of a strange encounter in the World Cafe this evening. There was a let’s call her Cruise Ship Karen. In a loud voice, Cruise Ship Karen demanded to know why I was travelling alone. Was I trying to find a man? Apparently, I was making her feel uncomfortable!

I decided it was no point engaging in conversation with her, her party were mouthing sorry to me as they led her away, and I happily continued to devour the sushi, drink wine and stare at the sea.

Top Tip –  Be sure to pick up a map of Sete at the port entrance and explore this lovely French town.

Top Tip 2 – Pay no attention to Cruise Ship Karens.

Day 4 – Marseille, France ( In The Footsteps Of Van Gogh )

I started the day with yummy breakfast waffles in Mamsen’s – a tiny eatery within the Explorers’ Lounge.

There were several shore excursion options today. Sadly, my first choice of a motorcycle sidecar ride through Provence was full, so I did my second choice and joined the full-day tour  In The Footsteps of Van Gogh , and it was a lovely day out. Yes, I would recommend it, and you don’t need to be a massive fan of Van Gogh to enjoy it.

Our first stop of the day was in Saint Remy de Provence.

Vincent van Gogh arrived in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in 1889 on 8 May after suffering a major mental crisis where he cut off his earlobe.

He voluntarily committed himself to the Saint-Paul de Mausole psychiatric hospital, where he stayed for a whole year until May 1890. It’s still a psychiatric health centre today.

During his stay in this small hospital room, Van Gogh experienced his most productive period; more than 150 paintings and drawings, including ‘The Starry Night’ and ‘The Iris’.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Just a few minutes walk from the hospital are the Roman ruins of Glanum.

Before visiting the hospital, we had a couple of hours to explore the charming chic town of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence with its pretty narrow streets, cute shops, cafés and restaurants.

A delicious lunch was included in a winery near Les Baux de Provence.

A starter salad with a glass of rose wine served in a winery near Les Baux-de-Provence

Afterwards, we visited Les Baux-de-Provence, a village 20 kilometres south of Avignon and located within the Regional Natural Park of the Alpilles. It is one of France’s most beautiful and visited villages. And yes, it was very beautiful, and there were many visitors as well.

It’s a typical example of a Provence perched village . These villages are usually in a historically crucial defensive position, e.g. high on a hilltop or on the edge of a steep valley or high and were initially built around castles and surrounded by fortifications.

It was a long but really lovely day. I’m itching to return to France and explore more of the Provence region.

Day 5 – Monaco

I woke up this morning to a view of Monte Carlo; well, that’s a lot more impressive than Marseille Port.

This morning I joined the included walking tour of Monaco Ville, the tiny capital of a small country.

The Italian guide with a very posh British accent ( from watching Downton Abbey) was so good; I stayed on this tour much longer than I usually do but sneaked off once we took a break near the palace. I wandered around the lanes that led away from the palace, but they were filled with tacky souvenir stores.

I waited for the changing of the guard, which takes place hourly in front of the palace. Have to say, it was rather underwhelming.

So I walked down and around the harbour. I found myself in real Monaco, where real people were going about their business – not just tourists.

I visited the casino, but it doesn’t officially open until 2 pm, but you’re allowed into the entrance hall. If you want to enter the casino, there’s an admission fee of 17 euros. There’s also a strict dress code; anyone wearing shorts, jeans with holes, sportswear, running shoes, flip-flops, and sandals for men, beachwear, and sleeveless shirts will not be allowed in.

I opted instead for a coffee, some good old-fashioned people-watching, and a stroll around the gardens.

As it was a hot day and too lazy to walk back around the harbour to the ship, I hopped on the bateau bus across Monaco harbour. For just two euros, the electric boat, which runs off solar panels on its roof, leaves every twenty minutes from Monte Carlo to the Monaco Cruise Terminal. The journey time is about five to ten minutes.  If you don’t fancy walking around Monaco, the hop-on hop-off bus stops right by the cruise terminal. I returned to the ship around 2 pm for a light buffet lunch in the World Cafe, followed by a lazy afternoon on the sun deck.

Dinner for the Solo Travellers this evening was at Manfredi’s Italian Restaurant. As I had had trouble getting reservations for this restaurant, I was delighted that they opened a spot for us waifs and strays.

The food was terrific, the wine superb, but unsurprisingly, the conversation turned sad again, and a few more tears were shed onto our crème brûlée desserts.

Top Tip 1 – If you want to enter Monaco’s cathedral, ensure your shoulders and knees are covered.

Top Tip 2 –  Manfredi’s is a must-eat venue on a Viking ocean cruise, but you do need to make reservations. It’s not always possible to book through the Viking Journey app in advance, but it can easily be booked through Guest Services when on board.

Day 6 – Livorno, Italy (A Day In Tuscany)

From Monaco, our next stop was Italy, and the little Italian port of Livorno was to be the base for the next two nights.

Most of the passengers were taking tours to Florence but having spent a week there studying Italian just a few months ago; I opted instead for the Day in Tuscany   excursion.

This excursion took us through the lush Tuscan countryside to the gorgeous medieval hill town of San Gimignano. The beautiful walled city of San Gimignano is located roughly halfway between Florence and Siena and is famous for its medieval architecture and towers.

A view through a gateway on San Gimignano on a day trip with Viking Ocean Cruises from Barcelona to Rome

Like Bologna , the tower houses symbolise their power and wealth. At its peak, there were 72 towers, but today only 14 remain.

The town, now a UNESCO site was packed with tourists. However, real life still exists here, and the weekly local market was taking place in the Piazza del Duomo.

Today’s tour included a guided city walk which took around an hour; then we had just over an hour to explore at leisure. It’s a small town, so an hour is more than enough. Lots of leather shops and posh souvenir shops but alas, what I want and what I can afford these days seem to be worlds apart.

From there, we headed to a local Tuscan farm for a lunch of local hams, olives, cheeses, and plenty of wine. Tuscany is famous for its wine, and a little wine tasting took place.

After wandering around the tiny hamlet and browsing in the farm shop, it was time to head back to the ship.

This evening, there was a local festival in Livorno, and as the Viking Sky is small enough to dock in the old port, it was an easy 15-minute walk into town to see what was happening. Viking provides a shuttle bus for those who don’t want to walk to and from town.

So after a large helping of sushi from the Viking Sky sushi bar, I headed into Livorno for a wander. It’s quite a pretty port town – with canals and forts. As the festival was on, artisan stalls lined the streets, and street musicians competed to be the loudest.

Top Tip –  When overnighting in Livorno, do take time to explore this port town; it’s a lovely little place.

Day 7 – Livorno Italy (Lucca and Pisa)

How is it day seven already? Time has flown by this week.

Exhausted by all the day tours and exploring all the different towns along the way, I could have really done with a lazy relaxing day on board the Viking ship. So what did I do?

Well, I feel guilty when I laze around and feel I might miss out, so I took the day tour to Lucca and Pisa instead.

Lucca was beautiful- one of those, ‘ooh, I could live here towns.’

viking ocean cruises single supplement

A gorgeous historic walled city with towers, churches, and piazzas, but without the crowds – or was I just lucky that day?

I spent most of the time just exploring the streets of the historic centre, stopping for a coffee in the oval-shaped Piazza del Anfiteatro, a gorgeous square with bars and cafes built on the ruins of an ancient Roman amphitheatre, took a brief stroll on the city walls, and did a little window shopping on the Via Fillungo, Lucca’s main shopping street.

Lunch wasn’t included on this tour, so I bought a panino and enjoyed my sandwich while people-watching on one of the city’s main squares and mentally planning a longer trip here in the future.

The afternoon included a trip to Pisa to see the Piazza dei Miracoli (the Square of Miracles) and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

If you want to go up the tower, you might want to consider getting a ticket in advance as there were really long queues, which would also include entrance into the cathedral.

Me in front of the leaning tower of Pisa

For my final dinner, I did have the opportunity to be sociable and join guests for dinner tonight, but I’d already spoken to a few people on today’s tour, and that was enough for one day, lol. So, instead, I chose to have a lovely last solo meal in The Restaurant pondering the week’s adventures and highlights. Before heading to the Star Theatre to watch a Magic Show!

Top Tip –  If you want to climb to the top of the Leaning Tower, buy your ticket in advance .

Day 8 – Civitavecchia (Rome)

Homeward bound.

As Viking had booked my flight back home to Malta, my transfer back to the airport was included. However, I had to vacate my lovely stateroom at 8 am. And although my flight back wasn’t until late afternoon, the last transfers left the ship at 09:15 am. What was I going to do at the airport all day?

I needn’t have worried. Viking has a room at the Hilton Rome Airport Hotel. Ok, the room is not the most comfortable, it’s just one of the hotel’s conference rooms. But it’s a place to leave your bag, complimentary coffee and snacks are available, and you can relax on the more comfortable sofas in the hotel lobby or use the hotel facilities.

The airport terminal is only a five-minute walk from the hotel.

Top Tip –  Bring just hand luggage with you on the cruise. Then, you can keep everything with you and not have to have bags packed and outside your door by 10 pm the night before.

Is A Viking Ocean Cruise Right For You?

A Viking cruise is not for everybody. If you’re more interested in the larger ships, casinos, theme nights, nightclubs, etc., then you’re probably NOT going to enjoy a Viking Cruise.

So, check out this post and find out if a Viking Ocean Cruise is the right choice for you.  and ideas for what to do on a sea day on a Viking Ocean Cruise.

Would I Recommend Viking Ocean Cruises?

Yes, I loved it. I don’t think I will ever be a complete cruise convert. I love the freedom of slow travel and really getting to know a place. But I can certainly understand its appeal. Going to sleep in one place and waking up somewhere new is wonderful.

Had it not been for this trip from Barcelona to Rome with Viking Ocean Cruises, I would probably have never bothered visiting Monaco. But I’m so glad I did.

And this cruise also made me realise I definitely need to return to Barcelona and Lucca to spend a little longer exploring these cities.

Would I Recommend Travelling Solo With Viking Ocean Cruises?

The single supplement on Viking is pretty steep. The price for a single passenger is more or less the same as two people travelling in a stateroom. This supplement means there won’t be many other single travellers on board.

In fact, I was surprised seven of us were on board this Viking ocean cruise from Barcelona to Rome. I just assumed I would be the only one.

If there are single travellers on board, Viking does arrange opportunities for solo travellers to meet.

However, Viking occasionally offers special rates for single travellers, so check for this and other special offers here.

I enjoyed this cruise because I enjoy my own company and prefer to be alone these days. But for those that love to mingle, there were plenty of opportunities to socialise. A gin and tonic in the Explorers’ Lounge is always a good place to start.

Such a great review, thank you for the summary!

I’ve thought of doing a solo cruise (or expedition) but that single supplement is tough. Your itinerary was wonderful! We did a similar trip a few years ago. We began the trip in Barcelona so spent 5 days here before the cruise. Beautiful city!

Sarah Wilson

I wish I had gone out a few days earlier – loved Barcelona!

Anna

I’d love to try a Viking cruise one day, as so far I’ve only been cruising on larger ships! You’ve visited so many cool places along the way, I’ve never even heard of Sete!

Nor had I and it’s a really lovely town

Shannon

It sounds amazing! I’ve spent the last three months in Spain, close to the Med and love watching all the cruises!

JJ Jordan

I love solo travel but I’ve never been solo on a cruise before! This sounds like it was a great trip. I love that they arrange opportunities for the solo travellers to meet.

Samantha

Thanks for sharing your experience – I loved hearing about your time in Monoco! I have never been and I’ve always been curious!

Monaco was much nicer than I expected.

Michele

It sounds like you had a lovely time. I’ve always wanted to try a Viking Cruise. Hopefully, I will get to experience it first-hand one day soon. Thanks for a great review!

Lasma

I have never really taken a cruise ship before, but this seems cool, I don’t care much about nightclubs or casinos, so I guess, the Viking could be a good idea for me, and the Mediterranean route seems pretty interesting to me! Thanks for sharing this!

I adore cruising — waking up each morning to the excitement of a new city to explore is magical! Plus, you only have to unpack once!

Yes, actually having time to properly unpack is a rare luxury for me 🙂

amy

Wow this sounds like such an incredible experience and like one that everyone should have at least once.

Travel A-Broads

I loved reading your diary/stream of consciousness writing style! I’ve never considered taking a cruise in Europe, but it sounds like a unique and fun way to explore different places. I also haven’t done much solo travel, but I can imagine it being relaxing to not have to answer to anyone other than yourself and maybe a good book or two 😊. Xx Sara

Forgot to mention, there’s a pretty good library on board too, but too busy doing shore excursions to fully appreciate.

Linda (LD Holland)

We do a lot of cruising. And I always wondered if I would do it on my own. So it was interesting to read your experience. I have always seen the get togethers that are put on for solo travellers. Good to know you joined in – even if it was a teary dinner. But very sorry that Cruise Ship Karen had to make a disrespectful comment about travelling alone. I sure have done it a lot in my life and it was always something I enjoyed. And as an introvert, I really can’t take other people all the time!

Fortunately, even though the ship was small, I managed to avoid Cruise Ship Karen after that.

Krista

This cruise stopped at so many incredible places! I haven’t been on a cruise yet but it’s something I’d like to try out once at least.

Laksh

Will be on this exact cruise in 2 weeks, can’t wait! Thinking of doing some Luis Vuitton shopping in Marsielle. Is this possible? Please e mail me. Thank you

6/15/23 Viking Cruises doesn’t allow single travelers. They obviously made an exception for you — probably because you are a travel writer. I’m glad to read of your wonderful trip. Sadly, Viking discriminates against those of us who don’t have a significant other to book a reservation & cabin with.

There were seven other solo travellers onboard my cruise. The single supplement can be hefty, but they do occasionally offer special discounts for single travellers, so it’s worth keeping an eye on their special offers page. But I agree with you; it would be nice if Viking Cruises were more solo-friendly. We are a growing market. I will forward your comment to Viking.

Marion Howard

You mentioned spending a week in Florence to learn Italian. Can you please send me the details.

Kind regards

Hi, I studied here https://www.scuolaleonardo.com/learn-italian-in-florence.html . Located right in the heart of Florence, I loved it.

Laura

I am dying to take a solo cruise. Like you, I enjoy people (most of the time) but relish my independence. Have been on Viking before and loved it but the solo supplement, when available, is tough. All my friends still have husbands or are working so….Loved reading your travel log, so informative and relatable!

Hopefully, one day, Viking will offer a few solo cabins like other cruises. Us solo travellers are a growing market. And thank you for the nice words 🙂

"We have all enjoyed getting to know our own shores in the UK more over the past few months but at this point we are all looking forward to spreading our wings and expanding our horizons even further.

"We believe there is no better – or safer – way to see the world than on a cruise so we are looking forward to welcoming our UK guests to Iceland, Malta and Bermuda this summer."

Cruise lines charge solo travelers extra. Here's how to avoid those fees.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Taking a cruise by yourself comes with plenty of perks, like doing what you want when you want. But there is one drawback that guests going it alone for the first time may not expect: extra fees.

Cruise lines generally charge single supplements when solo travelers book a cabin, tacking on an extra cost for those passengers.

“They have to look at the overall picture when they're looking at pricing out specific ships and itineraries, and they look at it as, ‘What is (the revenue) that we need to get from the cabin?’” said Michelle Fee, CEO and founder of travel agency franchise network Cruise Planners.

But it’s becoming increasingly easy to avoid those charges, as more lines add cabins designed with single guests in mind.

Why do cruise lines charge single supplements?

Single supplements help cruise operators make up the difference in earnings when only one person is in a stateroom designed for two.

“And people usually say, ‘Yeah, but I don't eat double,’” Fee said. “But you also don't drink double and you don't gamble double, so there's a lot of onboard (spending) that happens, as well.”

How much do cruise single supplements cost?

Cruise lines typically charge an additional 50% to 100% of the fare, according to Fee. If a solo traveler’s fare costs $1,000, for example, they would pay between $500 and $1,000 extra for the supplement.

Do cruise lines have solo cabins?

Yes. In fact, a number of cruise lines have invested more in one-person staterooms in recent years.

Norwegian Cruise Line – which Fee said was “ahead of the curve” when it introduced solo cabins over 10 years ago – announced plans last month to add nearly 1,000 cabins for single occupants across its fleet.

Fee said others have followed suit over the past two or three years. Oceania Cruises – also part of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. – launched its new ship, Oceania Vista , with six dedicated veranda staterooms for single guests in May. The upscale line previously debuted solo oceanview staterooms on four of its small ships in 2022.

Crystal and Virgin Voyages also have solo cabins throughout their fleets, while other lines may have them on select ships. Royal Caribbean International , for instance, has studio staterooms ranging from 101 to 199 square feet on Anthem of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas and Spectrum of the Seas.

Are solo cabins cheaper?

Solo cabins are priced for single guests, so passengers do not have to pay a supplement, according to Fee.

Cruise lines typically avoid pricing solo staterooms higher than double occupancy cabins “because then somebody could just jump into a double and have much more room,” she added.

A line may raise the price of a solo cabin if it’s running low on inventory for a particular sailing, possibly even higher than some double occupancy cabins. But the latter is unlikely to be cheaper after factoring in the supplement. “Let’s say it costs $1,000 for the solo (cabin), and the double occupancy room is $850 per person. It might cost a little bit more for that solo cabin, but not 150% of $850 or 200% of $850,” Fee said.

Cruise lines also frequently run promotions waiving or discounting the supplement.

'Come and go as you please': Here's how overnight cruise stops work

Fee said many lines are focusing on those accommodations because they see that solo travel comes in many forms.

Passengers could be sailing on their own, but they could also be with a group of friends who want their own space or traveling with family. “It could be that it’s a family group and one of the relatives is solo and a double-price cabin prices them right out of that family vacation, where these solo cabins allow them to take part in the family reunion,” Fee said.

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

viking ocean cruises single supplement

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

Got a email  from Viking today , good till Dec 31.

They are listing  four cruises and one of them  have a statement : * ask  about the single supplement.

Has anyone  done this type of promotion? What was the  % for the single supplement over the per person  price?

I do not want to call Viking yet ,so asking here.

Cool Cruiser

If it's a promotion then you'll need to call Viking if it's not listed.  Normal price is you pay for the whole cabin, even if you are the only one in it.

For our TA last year, the promo for the single supplement was 150% along with any others promos offered.  For my mother in law, that meant she paid only 1.5 times the special promo cost-DV at a V cost and free air!  We have only seen this offered close in to departure date.  In our case it was in December 2018 for a March 2019 cruise.

Thanks Clay , for the information.

150% is in my realm of possibility for booking with a single supplement.

Yes she said it was worth it in order to go. I wonder if you call Viking directly on a cruise that is getting close to being full if they might offer it.  Hope you’re doing well.

Clay, I am doing well.

But it is getting more difficult to find a friend to share a curise for various health or family  reasons.

When is your next cruise? I love reading your blogs.

Lois (Mike’s Mom) has the same issue! 😢

We hope to do a RC (we overspent last year with the unplanned Viking cruise in China) Transatlantic in March but haven’t booked yet as we have a good friend who has been fighting cancer for 10 years but just stopped chemo and we want to be around until he isn’t.  So if he rallies then we may not go to Europe this spring.

Thanks for following along on the blog...sorry I’m months behind, hope to catch up after the holidays!

Azulann.....I sometimes cruise solo when She Who Must Be Obeyed doesn't want to go but the itinerary is appealing to me.  While certainly not as all-inclusive as Viking, I just recently booked a cruise with P&O.  They have a limited number of single balconies and insides, but I wan't fast enough to snag one of those.  The U.S. travel company that I used got me a nice cabin for a 59% single supplement - basic single fare plus 59%.  It's on an adults only ship (no feral children running loose) and tips are included in the fare.

It might be worth looking into.

Anyone remember which were the 4 cruises?

I advise calling Viking as I believe there are several cruises with reduced single supplements which expire 12/31

  15. Cruising Solo: What It's Like to Go on a Viking River Cruise Alone

The biggest downside to doing a river cruise solo is the dreaded single supplement fee. This is when you have to pay for two people (or at least pay extra) even if it's just you traveling. Many travel companies assess this extra fee if you want your own room, so it's not something exclusive to Viking or cruise lines in general.
