Working with the press

Find out how our PR activity can benefit your business and the role press can play in your business' marketing strategy.

Gain exposure for your business

We can help you reach a wider audience, the benefits to your business.

Over many years, we have worked closely with tourism and events businesses. Together, we showcase the best that Scotland has to offer through our programme of press engagement. You could be one of those businesses.

Showcase your business

Showcase your business to journalists who write for key publications around the world and influencers whose followers are ready and willing to travel and spend.

Grow your customer base

Enhanced exposure for your business through press coverage and integrated consumer campaigns can increase interest in your destination and business and help to grow your customer base.

Help to extend your season

Our PR activity is mindful of regional and seasonal spread and often showcases “off-the beaten track” experiences and encourages visits in the quieter shoulder months, helping to extend your season.

How can you get involved?

You can get involved in our media activity in three different ways:

  • tell us your story
  • tell us what's new
  • support a press trip

1. Tell us your story

Our Global PR team builds and nurtures relationships with key press across the globe to ensure that they become the trusted source of new ideas and opportunities. Quality story hooks and plenty of them are essential to pique interest for a holiday in Scotland.

If you have a good story to tell we would be delighted to share your news with our contacts.

Please consider the following pointers for what makes a good story:

visit scotland pr jobs

Is the story new and current?

Think new = news. New openings always work well with our media partners.

Is it quirky or unusual?

Something slightly out of the ordinary is more likely to get picked up.

Does it evoke an emotion?

Tapping into emotions helps to deepen engagement with your audience.

Does it tie-in to trends?

Align with current travel trends to help us access coverage in the biggest titles. Have you seen a trend or story in the press that you could link your business to?

Is it relevant?

Different people have different interests. Consider what market, title or audience you want to attract.

Are you trade-ready?

This is particularly important for engaging with international markets. Find out more on working with the travel trade.

"So what?"

What makes you excited about your business, what makes it different, what is the talkability factor that will make potential visitors sit up and take notice?

2. Tell us what's new for 2024

New galleries at trimontium

We produce and distribute regular communications to our database of key press contacts in the UK, France, Germany, US, Canada, China, Australia, and Middle East. We pitch the latest stories, themes and angles in a punchy, teaser format – for both consumer and trade publications.

A key element of this activity is our ‘What’s new for 2024’ section, which consumer titles look out for each autumn and to plan their travel editorial calendars for the next year.

If you have something to shout about for 2024 – new openings, tours, people, experiences, or trends that you’re adopting or are shaping your offering – please send these stories to [email protected] for us to consider for potential inclusion in a communication or pitch to press.

3. Support a press trip

Press trips and visits allow journalists to experience everything a destination has to offer first-hand, from its scenery and attractions to accommodation and food and drink. This allows them to tell authentic stories to their audience which result in greater credibility, engagement and trust.

We operate a rolling programme of press trips throughout the year, designed to showcase a range of sectors and regions in all seasons. Any offers of support to host journalists are gratefully received and help us to extend our programme further.

If you’d like to offer support for accommodation, activities or experiences in return for potential exposure in a publication please email us at [email protected] or talk to your Industry Relationship Manager . We’ll always work with you to ensure the press trip is the right fit for your business.

Meet our colleagues

Suzy faulkner, deputy commercial director – london.

“I wanted to work for a global company to give me the opportunity of being exposed to multiple areas of the business as well as people and cultures. Working at VisitBritain has broadened my perspectives, and in turn enhanced my professional capabilities which has added value to the organisation.

“There is flexibility, as my agenda could cover calls with Asia in the morning and webinars in the USA in the evening, which has led to a happier, healthier work-life balance. I have also expanded my knowledge of global markets and learnt best practices relating to policies and strategies.”

Robin Kagenaar, Digital Marketing Manager Netherlands – Amsterdam

“Working in the Europe team is truly international. I enjoy catching up on travel trends, and sharing ideas and video calls with colleagues all over the continent. You learn something new every day, from tiny but important cultural differences to massive overlaps in traveller behaviour that you never knew were there.

“Working at VisitBritain is inspiring, energising and educational and you get to meet some of the nicest, most professional people around.”

Misha Kim, Marketing Manager – Seoul, China and North East Asia

“Britain is perceived very well in South Korea, and I am happy to represent it. The UK was actually the first country I visited overseas and it’s where I met my husband, so it’s a very special place to me.

“My colleagues in London and in my region have always made me feel part of the team. We are so diverse, dynamic and delightful, and I am so proud to work alongside people who share my love for Britain.”

Celia Diaz, PR & Content Manager – Spain

“As a PR professional I worked in different areas of the tourism industry before I joined VisitBritain. One of the best things about working for an international company is the number of colleagues you meet from all around the globe. It is a significant long-term worry since it jeopardizes production and, by extension, competitiveness. As a result, people work longer hours, and Finland also has more foreign workers.  No sponsorship is required…

What the New Overtime Rule Means for Workers

Collage shows four professionals in business casual clothing.

One of the basic principles of the American workplace is that a hard day’s work deserves a fair day’s pay. Simply put, every worker’s time has value. A cornerstone of that promise is the  Fair Labor Standards Act ’s (FLSA) requirement that when most workers work more than 40 hours in a week, they get paid more. The  Department of Labor ’s new overtime regulation is restoring and extending this promise for millions more lower-paid salaried workers in the U.S.

Overtime protections have been a critical part of the FLSA since 1938 and were established to protect workers from exploitation and to benefit workers, their families and our communities. Strong overtime protections help build America’s middle class and ensure that workers are not overworked and underpaid.

Some workers are specifically exempt from the FLSA’s minimum wage and overtime protections, including bona fide executive, administrative or professional employees. This exemption, typically referred to as the “EAP” exemption, applies when:

1. An employee is paid a salary,

2. The salary is not less than a minimum salary threshold amount, and

3. The employee primarily performs executive, administrative or professional duties.

While the department increased the minimum salary required for the EAP exemption from overtime pay every 5 to 9 years between 1938 and 1975, long periods between increases to the salary requirement after 1975 have caused an erosion of the real value of the salary threshold, lessening its effectiveness in helping to identify exempt EAP employees.

The department’s new overtime rule was developed based on almost 30 listening sessions across the country and the final rule was issued after reviewing over 33,000 written comments. We heard from a wide variety of members of the public who shared valuable insights to help us develop this Administration’s overtime rule, including from workers who told us: “I would love the opportunity to...be compensated for time worked beyond 40 hours, or alternately be given a raise,” and “I make around $40,000 a year and most week[s] work well over 40 hours (likely in the 45-50 range). This rule change would benefit me greatly and ensure that my time is paid for!” and “Please, I would love to be paid for the extra hours I work!”

The department’s final rule, which will go into effect on July 1, 2024, will increase the standard salary level that helps define and delimit which salaried workers are entitled to overtime pay protections under the FLSA.

Starting July 1, most salaried workers who earn less than $844 per week will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule. And on Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers who make less than $1,128 per week will become eligible for overtime pay. As these changes occur, job duties will continue to determine overtime exemption status for most salaried employees.

Who will become eligible for overtime pay under the final rule? Currently most salaried workers earning less than $684/week. Starting July 1, 2024, most salaried workers earning less than $844/week. Starting Jan. 1, 2025, most salaried workers earning less than $1,128/week. Starting July 1, 2027, the eligibility thresholds will be updated every three years, based on current wage data. DOL.gov/OT

The rule will also increase the total annual compensation requirement for highly compensated employees (who are not entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA if certain requirements are met) from $107,432 per year to $132,964 per year on July 1, 2024, and then set it equal to $151,164 per year on Jan. 1, 2025.

Starting July 1, 2027, these earnings thresholds will be updated every three years so they keep pace with changes in worker salaries, ensuring that employers can adapt more easily because they’ll know when salary updates will happen and how they’ll be calculated.

The final rule will restore and extend the right to overtime pay to many salaried workers, including workers who historically were entitled to overtime pay under the FLSA because of their lower pay or the type of work they performed.

We urge workers and employers to visit  our website to learn more about the final rule.
