Indiana University Bloomington

Explore art, architecture, and nature.

Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, IU Bloomington showcases the kind of landscape you’d expect from the quintessential college campus. You’ll travel through time as you walk the grounds, with the Victorian-era buildings of the Old Crescent giving way to Romanesque, Gothic, Collegiate Gothic, Art Deco, Modern, and postmodern architectural styles of the last 200 years. From its original 10 acres south of downtown, IU Bloomington has grown to nearly 2,000 acres in the northeast quadrant of the city.

Stroll through such memorable landmarks as Dunn’s Woods and the Fine Arts Plaza. Enjoy a picnic on the bank of the Campus River. Experience a moment of Zen in the Commemorative Garden at the Indiana Memorial Union. Whatever you seek, find it at IU Bloomington.

Find your way around IU

The IU interactive campus map includes IU and non-IU buildings, construction zones, visitor parking lots, bike racks, and emergency phone locations.

The IU Visitor Information Center and plenty of IU Hoosiers are ready to help you find where you need to go.

Make the Most of Your College Visit in Bloomington

Categories: Indiana University , Outdoors

The awesome, talented people in Indiana University's Office of Admissions  team have your campus visit covered, but what about life outside of campus? Make the most of your time in Bloomington by experiencing the food, shops, and recreation we have to offer as you consider making B-Town your home for the next four years.

Eat Like a True Hoosier

Buffalouie's.

IU sports memorabilia on the walls at BuffaLouie's

If you ask a campus guide, IU student, or Bloomington townie where you should grab a bite to eat, there's a strong chance they'll recommend BuffaLouie's . The iconic wings joint is known for their incredible food, epic interior, and Hoosier sports enthusiasm. It's the best place to grab wings in town — although their sandwiches, burgers, and salads are amazing, too — and it's one of the best places to watch an IU game if you can't make it there in person. The walls are decorated from floor-to-ceiling with sports memorabilia, vintage signs, signed IU jerseys, TVs broadcasting a variety of sports games, and much more. It's more than just a place to go to eat — it's a Bloomington experience.

Mother Bear's Pizza

Mother Bear's

If BuffaLouie's isn't the first recommendation you're given, Mother Bear's Pizza is another likely answer. Ranked the fourth-best pizza joint in the nation, Mother Bear's is known for their variety of incredible signature pies with toppings all the way to the edge of the pizza. With over 20 signature creations to choose from, as well as a build-your-own option, there's something to satisfy every craving. While pizza is their crown jewel, Mother Bear's also serves delicious salads, wings, hot subs, pasta dinners, and a variety of "munchies." Visit their location across the street from the Jacobs School of Music so you can write your name on the wall in Sharpie — a new student rite of passage.

Nick's English Hut

Sink the Biz at Nick's

If you ask a Hoosier alum where you should go for a bite, they'll definitely suggest Nick's. Serving the Bloomington community since 1927, Nick's English Hut is an IU student, alumni, and fan staple. Decorated much like BuffaLouie's with Hoosier fanfare from floor-to-ceiling, Nick's is known for their great atmosphere, Sink the Biz drinking game & French fries, and their delicious stromboli & sandwiches. Enjoy a bite here while you visit, and keep it in mind when you're looking for a place to catch an IU game with friends.

Grab an IU Souvenir

Exterior of Greetings on Kirkwood

It's only right that you grab a souvenir or two to remember your first official IU visit, and there's a lot of great places to shop for one near campus. Greetings is a local favorite on Kirkwood for unique IU apparel, as well as car accessories and dorm decor. They also have a section dedicated to quirky gifts, which is always fun to peruse.

The Indiana Shop

indiana shop

Located a few storefronts down from Greetings right next to Nick's, The Indiana Shop is a great place for the entire family to do some shopping. Find IU Mom and IU Dad gear for the parents, sports-specific apparel for the Hoosier sports fans in your family, and tees for every school at the university for you to represent your major & college as you begin your journey at IU.

Sweatshirts at Tracks

Just a few more storefronts down the street will put you at Tracks , a local IU apparel and music store. Known for their trendy clothing and limited edition t-shirts, Tracks is a great place to go for unique IU tees, sweatshirts, crop tops, hats, and more.

Experience the Culture of Bloomington

4 th street — international restaurant row.

4th street bloomington

There are a few stand-out places you may hear about during your visit, one of them being 4 th Street. Located just a block south of Kirkwood Avenue, the street is known as "International Restaurant Row" due to the abundance of international restaurants lining both sides of the street. It's said that you can experience the world without a passport here in Bloomington by trying the cuisine at each restaurant — choose from Burmese, Tibetan, Turkish, Thai, Indian, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and more.

Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

Fall Lake Griffy

Bloomington has an abundance of nature recreation and outdoor adventure , but the closest destination to campus is the Griffy Lake Nature Preserve . Just a five-minute drive from Assembly Hall , Griffy Lake offers fishing , canoeing & kayaking, hiking , stand-up paddleboarding, wildlife observation, and gorgeous scenery for nature photography. It's so close to IU's campus and the city that you don't expect to find such an incredible nature scene unfold two miles away from the hustle & bustle of it all, but that's what makes it that much more special of a place.

Kirkwood Avenue

Downtown Bloomington view of Kirkwood Avenue in the spring

As previously mentioned, Kirkwood Avenue is the most iconic street in Bloomington. Known for its proximity to campus & popular restaurants, bars, and shops, Kirkwood is a must on your list of things to do while visiting the university. Exit campus through Sample Gates to walk straight onto the promenade — grab a bite at Nick's, then pop into Greetings, The Indiana Shop, and Tracks for your commemorative "first IU visit" souvenir. Don't forget to take a photo at Sample Gates and along Kirkwood, and tag us on Instagram using #visitbtown!

downtown

Located at the end of Kirkwood is " The Square ," downtown's most prominent area for shopping and dining. You could spend an entire day perusing local stores, eating at the various restaurants as mealtimes pass by, and exploring the hidden gems on the streets that surround The Square. Between Kirkwood and The Square, there's plenty of downtown to see just a short walk from campus.

Stay Close to Your (New) Home

The biddle hotel & conference center.

Double queen room at the Biddle Hotel

Located inside the Indiana Memorial Union on campus, the Biddle Hotel offers the ultimate Hoosier hotel stay: in the heart of campus, at the second-largest student union in the nation, fully immersed in Cream & Crimson culture. The hotel offers recently renovated rooms just a short walk from IU's Sample Gates and Bloomington's iconic Kirkwood Avenue . Venture into the student union portion of the building to experience the famous Tudor Room , IMU Bowling & Billiards ,  IU Bookstore ,  East Lounge , and much more.

Graduate Bloomington

Graduate

The Graduate Hotel is a great place to stay if you want to be immersed in Hoosier culture, but you want to stay in town rather than on campus. The hotel's concept is to celebrate the culture of the university and of Indiana, using both the decor and design of the entire building. Rooms feature nods to the Little 500, pops of Hoosier plaid, vintage IU sports memorabilia & equipment, and much more. In addition to its thoughtful design and rich history, the Graduate has a great location on Kirkwood and features the Jack & Diane Terrace, which overlooks a unique view of downtown — it's one of the most Instagrammable places in Bloomington.

Indiana University Foundation

Indiana university prepares to celebrate iu day on april 17.

Friday, April 12, 2024

visit university of indiana

IU Day is an annual, 24-hour, university-wide day of giving and engagement. This year’s event will take place on April 17.

Alumni, donors, fans, faculty, staff, students, and others with a connection to Indiana University are encouraged to celebrate IU Day by supporting an IU cause, wearing IU gear, and sharing IU pride in person and on social media.

Past IU Day celebrations have included on-campus activities and alumni chapter meet-ups in Indiana, across the United States, and around the world. IU Day 2023 inspired over 4,300 gifts, including more than $250,000 donated to scholarships for IU students—plus an additional $195,000 in matching funds for scholarships.

For IU Day 2024, the IU Foundation has set a challenge to raise $1 million across all IU causes. If this goal is achieved, a brand-new scholarship will be activated. The scholarship will support students with financial need, and undergraduate or graduate students on any IU campus will be eligible to apply. Gifts to any IU school, department, program, or campus will count toward the total. Donors have already contributed more than $164,000 in lead gifts and matching funds to further incentivize the IU community to show up for the causes they care about on IU Day.

Those interested in donating can visit My IU to browse all giving opportunities at IU, or check out the 70+ IU Day crowdfunding campaigns, supporting a wide variety of opportunities. These opportunities include digitizing the archives of the Indiana Daily Student , providing dental care for children whose families can’t afford it, and several scholarships supporting IU students.

IU Northwest, for example, is raising money for the IU Northwest General Student Scholarship Fund . In a recent article, “ The lifetime impact of IU Day ,” IU Northwest noted that gifts to this scholarship on past IU Days have helped the campus award more than $25,000 in financial assistance to IU Northwest students since 2021. One of the recipients is IU Northwest student Max McLean, whose scholarship enabled him to quit his part-time job and pursue his theater passion and profession more fully.

“I know that people who donate often go unnoticed, but you’re truly helping people follow their dreams and making their dreams into a reality,” McLean told IU Northwest News. “I would never be able to do anything that I do without the help of the people who donate.”

Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of IU are encouraged to participate in IU Day in the following ways on April 17:

  • Make a gift to an IU fund that supports your passion.
  • Download IU Day social media graphics and share them using #IUday.
  • Enter the IU Day Photo Challenge for a chance to win $500 for your favorite IU cause. Simply share a favorite IU photo in Twitter or Instagram and tag @IUFoundation or comment on the IU Foundation’s photo challenge Facebook post.
  • Express your gratitude for IU on social media using the hashtag #IUday.
  • Follow @iufoundation on Facebook , Twitter , Instagram , or LinkedIn for the latest IU Day news.

Indiana men’s basketball set to host 4 transfers during Little 500 week

spconnor041724-01.png

Indiana men’s basketball has four transfer visits lined up for April 17-21, the heart of Little 500 week. The Hoosiers have four open scholarships remaining.

Wisconsin transfer and Fort Wayne, Indiana, native Connor Essegian started his IU visit Wednesday. The junior guard has two years of eligibility remaining.

Essegian spent two seasons with the Badgers. During his freshman year, he averaged 11.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game on 40.4% shooting on his way to Big Ten All-Freshman team honors.

However, his role and stats dipped his sophomore season. After earning 27.4 minutes per game his freshman campaign, that number dropped to 7.4 minutes last season. He scored 3.2 points and collected 0.8 rebounds on average on 38.5% shooting.

Essegian played against Indiana three times in his two seasons with Wisconsin. He posted 14 points and 11 rebounds in his freshman year, his only double double that season. In two contests this season, he scored just 4 points and grabbed one rebound. Indiana went 2-1 against Essegian and the Badgers.

Grace College transfer and LaGrange, Indiana, native Elijah Malone is slated to visit Indiana on Wednesday night through Thursday. The senior center has one year of eligibility remaining.

Malone pieced together a historic resume during his time at Grace. After being the school’s first All-American in 10 years his junior season, he became the school’s first NAIA National Player of the Year winner last year. He also won the 2024 Bevo Francis Award, given to the best player among levels Division II and lower.

He averaged 14.1 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game in 22.5 minutes per game during his four years at Grace. During his award-winning senior season, he averaged 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per contest on 63% shooting and 36.9% from 3-point range.

Stanford University transfer Kanaan Carlyle is scheduled to visit Friday through Sunday. The freshman guard from Atlanta, Georgia, has three years of eligibility remaining. He is ranked the No. 10 player in the 247sports transfer portal rankings .

Carlyle averaged 11.5 points and 2.7 assists per game in 23 games for the Cardinal this season. He shot 38.6% from the field and 32% from 3-point range.

The 6-foot-3 combo guard was named an All-Pac-12 Freshman Team honorable mention following the season. A 28-point, eight-rebound performance against the University of Arizona on Dec. 31 earned him an Associated Press National Player of the Week honor Jan. 2.

Drexel University transfer Amari Williams will visit IU on Friday and Saturday. The senior center hails from Nottingham, England, and has one year of eligibility remaining.

The 6-foot-10 big man became the first player in Coastal Athletic Association history to earn three consecutive Defensive Player of the Year awards. He averaged eight rebounds and two blocks per game during the stretch.

After an unproductive freshman campaign averaging four minutes per game, Williams became a staple in the Dragons’ rotation for the next three years. In addition to his defensive production, he averaged 11.8 points on 52.1% shooting.

IU basketball transfer portal hot board 4.0: Who's in, who's next, who's new?

visit university of indiana

BLOOMINGTON – An expected busy offseason, has been just that for Mike Woodson and his Indiana staff.

IU , still light four scholarship players with plenty of work to do, will dive right back in. The Hoosiers are lining up visitors for the coming weekends, with a heavy emphasis on positions and roles of need. IndyStar examines those needs, and some names to know as IU’s roster-building efforts accelerate.

Insider: What landing nation's No. 1 transfer Oumar Ballo means for IU, Mike Woodson

'He works his tail off': How IU's Will Sheehey has made an impact on Golden State's staff

∎ Backcourt impact: An already thin guard rotation lost Xavier Johnson (eligibility) and CJ Gunn (portal) once the season ended. Trey Galloway gives Mike Woodson proven ball-handling and creativity, but he cannot run a one-man show.

Indiana needs shooting and scoring punch, both, here. Players who can get on the ball and make plays, for themselves or others, and players who can stretch the floor in ways last season’s roster too often could not. Myles Rice hands Woodson a point guard with as many as three years of eligibility remaining, upping the Hoosiers' depth of creativity and giving Woodson another lead guard around which to build his ball-screen offense. Now, Indiana must add players for whom Rice can create.

∎ Backcourt depth: Simplistic, yes. But there’s an extent to which Indiana just needs bodies in its backcourt. Galloway and Gabe Cupps are the only guards returning to play at least 50% of available minutes last season. The growth of Anthony Leal’s role in Big Ten play shouldn’t be overlooked, but it’s not by itself a cure-all. Rice should see serious minutes. He shouldn't be alone.

∎ Floor spacing: It’s long past time Indiana had the tools necessary to shoot 3-pointers with both accuracy and efficiency. Oumar Ballo gives the Hoosiers more punch inside once again. Now, they need to give him (and Malik Reneau) room to move. That means adding at least two players with an established track record shooting the ball well. It also means bolstering the roster with players used to the kind of volume the Hoosiers so desperately need.

Names to know

We’ll group these names by position, and list them alphabetically. The usual disclaimer: This is by no means an exhaustive list, and it will be updated. The portal moves fast. Circumstances change rapidly in college basketball. Just ask Mitch Barnhart. Let’s roll.

COMMITMENTS

Oumar ballo ( read more ).

The Arizona transfer is among the most recognizable big men in the country. A dominant force, particularly defensively and on the glass, for the Wildcats across the last two seasons, ESPN ranked Ballo the No. 1 available transfer in his class as recently as Tuesday morning.

By Tuesday afternoon, he was a Hoosier. Ballo committed at the conclusion of a three-day visit to Bloomington, handing Woodson yet another dominant rim presence. Ballo is a distinct player to Trayce Jackson-Davis and Kel'el Ware. But like those bigs before him, he'll move from Tucson to Bloomington knowing he's going to play for a coach that knows how to use bigs effectively.

Myles Rice ( Read more )

The reigning Pac-12 freshman of the year, Rice pulled the strings for surprise package Washington State during the Cougars’ best season in a decade and a half last winter. He averaged 14.8 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in his first competitive collegiate season. Rice was not just one of Washington State’s best players — if not the Cougars’ best — but also among the Pac-12’s best creators.

Now, Rice is Bloomington-bound. If Woodson had a wish list at point guard, Rice probably topped it. That's one wish come true.

It’s not surprising to see a lot of IU’s focus right now trained on the backcourt. As previously discussed, the Hoosiers need both depth and impact as they rebuild their guard rotation, and that could mean trying to take as many as four guards out of the portal this cycle.

A COVID super senior, Brea averaged 11.1 points on 49.8% shooting from behind the arc for Dayton. A bigger guard at 6-6, Brea is also an able rebounder for his position, but it's the 3-point percentage that leaps off the page first. Indiana has reached out, but it might be tough sledding for the Hoosiers here. Two-time reigning national champion UConn is firmly in the picture for the New York native.

Kanaan Carlyle

The Stanford transfer made honorable mention All-Freshman Team in the Pac-12 last winter, averaging 11.5 points and 2.7 assists per game. He appeared in 23 games for the Cardinal in his lone season in Palo Alto, making close to 78% of his free throws along the way. Carlyle shot just 32% from 3 (a clean 32-of-100), and he needs to improve his finishing on 2s as well. But he would add some creativity — he finished conference play last year 11 th in assist rate and a remarkable third in possessions used. He’s comfortable with the ball in his hands.

Carlyle has a visit scheduled for Little 500 weekend.

Connor Essegian

Essegian is an interesting case. He was a revelation for Wisconsin two years ago, averaging 11.7 points per game while shooting a tick under 36% from behind the arc. All that dried up last winter, when the Central Noble grad saw his minutes average cut from 27.4 per game to just 7.3. Essegian never found his 3-point shot or his scoring touch as a sophomore, and he didn’t play double-digit minutes in any of the Badgers’ last 11 games. He undeniably ticks certain boxes (shooting chiefly among them) for Indiana, but the Hoosiers would need to be confident last season was the exception, not the rule.

Essegian visited Indiana last week, and he's expected in Lincoln this weekend. A decision between finalists, including IU, South Carolina, Nebraska and Maryland, could come soon after that.

Leland Walker

Another Indianapolis native on this list, Walker popped up early in the portal cycle in connection with Indiana. The North Central grad averaged 15.4 points and 4.1 assists per game last season as a sophomore at Eastern Kentucky, and his two-year numbers suggest he’s ready for a step up in competitive level.

Things have since slowed with Walker and the Hoosiers (not uncommon in a calendar that moves in fits and starts), but there are plenty of ways Walker fits what IU needs. This recruitment could come down to roster spots and playing time, as much as anything.

WINGS/FORWARDS

IU already has good options here, with Mackenzie Mgbako confirmed returning and five-star Bryson Tucker inbound after a whirlwind recruitment culminated in his commitment earlier this spring . Indiana’s need here might be style-dependent — if Woodson wants to play a smaller, more positionally fluid brand of basketball next season, more wing depth is a requirement.

Zach Anderson

Indiana fans might remember Anderson, who hit five 3s on his way to 19 points and seven rebounds in the Hoosiers' closer-than-expected win over Florida Gulf Coast in last year's opener. He's in the portal now, and there's been persistent talk of a visit to Bloomington for a few days. Until that gets nailed down, it's difficult to gauge exactly where things stand between player and program. An outstanding 3-point shooting (45.9%) last season who also averaged 12.8 points and 5.1 rebounds, Anderson would make a lot of sense for IU, depending upon the role being sold to him.

Ben Humrichous

It’s been a remarkable rise for Humrichous. The Tipton native was playing at Huntington University two years ago, then spent last year starring at Evansville before portaling this window. In 23 games with the Purple Aces, Humrichous hit 53-of-126 3s (42.1%) while finishing 2s at a respectable rate and taking on an increased load in conference play. A 6-9 forward with tweener skills, Humrichous finished last season with a true shooting percentage of 0.613, which would’ve ranked him second among Hoosiers behind only Kel’el Ware in 2023-24.

Adou Thiero

We removed Thiero from our initial list, as contact didn't seem to have developed into anything more between IU and the Kentucky forward. Then Thiero trimmed his list to five schools and mentioned Indiana among them, so we'll bring him back at least for now. Of those five (UK, Arkansas, UNC and Pitt being the other four), IU probably isn't the likeliest landing spot. Transferring home to Pittsburgh might make the most sense for Thiero, but he's got options. The Hoosiers remain among them, just perhaps not very seriously at this time.

We'll keep this section here now, given IU might still be hunting for some depth behind Ballo and Reneau. As names either fall away or stay in frame, we can update this list. Indiana could look for like-for-like depth, or reach for a change-of-pace big. Just a handful of names here .

Elijah Malone

As interesting as any name on this board, Malone won small-college player-of-the-year honors last season at Grace College . The LaGrange native averaged 17.3 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.9 assists, as he led his team to a 34-2 record and a national semifinal appearance. Malone hit 37% of his 3s and was efficient all around, as a versatile 6-10 forward. He's reportedly scheduled to visit IU soon. This would qualify as firmly change of pace, but Malone's overall profile is fascinating.

Pharrel Payne

IU’s staff will know Payne well, having planned for him these past two seasons at Minnesota. Payne was rarely a volume scorer in the post in Minneapolis (though he did average 10 points per game last winter). But he was an outstanding rebounder at both ends of the floor — third in the conference in offensive rebound rate in Big Ten games, 13 th in defensive rebound rate — and a functional shot blocker as well. He also finished nearly 64% of 2s across a pair of seasons with the Golden Gophers.

The question with Payne is playing time. With Ballo inbound, would Payne still consider the Hoosiers knowing he'd probably play from the bench in Bloomington? If so, that would hand Woodson enviable 4/5 depth. It's worth saying Payne has more than one year of eligibility left, and Ballo does not.

Indianapolis columnist apologizes to Caitlin Clark over 'awkward' heart gesture

wnba basketball star

An Indianapolis sports columnist has apologized for flashing a heart symbol with his hands, as well as for his subsequent comments, to new Indiana Fever player Caitlin Clark in what soon became an “ awkward ” interaction.

Indianapolis Star columnist Gregg Doyel made the heart symbol while he was speaking to Clark at her introductory news conference with the WNBA team, to which she responded, “You like that?” Doyel replied, “I like that you’re here.”

Clark, who broke the NCAA scoring record for both women and men as an Iowa Hawkeye and was the No. 1 pick in Monday’s WNBA draft , said, “I do that at my family after every game, so it’s pretty cool.”

“OK, well, start doing it to me and we’ll get along just fine,” Doyel replied, before he asked a question about Clark’s decision to turn pro and enter the draft.

Doyel apologized in a column published online Wednesday night.

“I’m devastated to realize I’m part of the problem,” he wrote.

Doyel said he is known for having awkward conversations with people before asking “brashly conversational questions.” He’d done so for years with Indianapolis Colts coaches, as well as with Purdue University and Indiana University players, he wrote.

He called himself “another insensitive man” and said he offended Clark and her family while trying to be “clever” and “welcoming.”

“After going through denial, and then anger — I’m on the wrong side of this? Me??? — I now realize what I said and how I said it was wrong, wrong, wrong. I mean it was just wrong,” Doyel wrote. “Caitlin Clark, I’m so sorry.”

Clark and her representatives could not immediately be reached for comment late Wednesday.

Clark, 22, broke the women’s NCAA all-time scoring record in February and then broke the men’s record a month later. She ended with 3,951 career points.

With Clark playing, the women’s NCAA championship game between the Hawkeyes and the South Carolina Gamecocks drew more viewers than the men’s championship game for the first time.

Iowa lost to South Carolina for the title, but Gamecocks coach Dawn Staley singled out Clark for lifting up women’s basketball.

Clark has since made multiple high-profile media appearances, including on NBC’s “TODAY” and “Saturday Night Live.” In another sign of fans’ excitement, her Indiana Fever jersey became the top-selling jersey ever for a draft pick .
