Star Trek Is Spread Out Across 3 Streaming Services Now - Where To Watch

  • Star Trek fans can find every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy on Paramount+.
  • Paramount+ is the streaming home for all Chris Pine Star Trek movies.
  • The 6 Star Trek: The Original Series movies and 4 Star Trek: The Next Generation movies can be found on Max.

The Star Trek franchise is now spread across three separate streaming services, meaning that fans may wish to have a road map to find where they can watch their favorite Trek shows and movies. For clarity, this split is for Star Trek fans in the US, as the specifics of geo-blocking and streaming rights vary from country to country. However, US fans aren't alone in having multiple ways to access the franchise. For example, Star Trek fans in the UK can still watch all the legacy shows on Netflix until their streaming rights lapse, while Paramount+ has everything bar Star Trek: Prodigy .

Meanwhile, in the United States, Paramount+ holds the majority of Star Trek , with some notable exceptions. Paramount+ controversially removed Star Trek: Prodigy when the show was canceled in 2023. At the start of 2024, the pre-Abrams Star Trek movies have a new streaming home as part of an existing deal with another streamer . With some confusion over which shows and movies are on which streamer, it's a good time to look at the three different streaming homes for Star Trek in 2024.

Only Chris Pines Star Trek Movies Remain On Paramount Plus, Fans Unhappy

Every star trek tv series except star trek: prodigy is on paramount+.

Paramount+ subscribers can watch everything from Star Trek: The Original Series all the way to its 2020s prequel series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It's the perfect way for Star Trek fans to draw links across the franchise, allowing subscribers to travel from the world of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard 's 24th century to the far future of Star Trek: Discovery . The final season of Star Trek: Discovery premieres on Paramount+ in April , as Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the USS Discovery embark on an intergalactic treasure hunt.

Later in 2024, Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will premiere in late Summer/early Fall , picking up on Lower Decks ' season 4's cliffhanger ending . As Lower Decks is a love letter to the franchise's prolific 1990s period, fans have a chance to prepare for more deep-cut references via revisiting 90s classics like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine on Paramount+. Showrunner Mike McMahan has also expressed his desire to show some love to Scott Bakula's Star Trek: Enterprise in Lower Decks season 5, making it a perfect time to revisit the prequel show on Paramount+.

Fans of animation can also revisit Lower Decks ' predecessor, Star Trek: The Animated Series , which, despite fan arguments over its canonicity, takes pride of place among the other Trek shows on Paramount+. Star Trek 's other animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy isn't on Paramount+ , owing to its cancelation in 2023. The absence of the backdoor Star Trek: Voyager sequel show on Paramount+ does mean that fans of Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and her heroic crew will have to look elsewhere to see how their story continued after returning to the Alpha Quadrant.

J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Movies Are On Paramount+

J.J. Abrams and Chris Pine's Star Trek movies are also available on Paramount+, representing the franchise's Kelvin timeline. The Kelvin timeline trilogy begins with 2009's Star Trek , in which a crew of young cadets become the heroic crew of the USS Enterprise while foiling the plans of Nero (Eric Bana) in an alternate timeline of his own creation. And then, Star Trek into Darkness remakes the beloved Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan with mixed results, casting Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan Noonien-Singh, and introducing Alice Eve as a young Dr. Carol Marcus.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies featured Leonard Nimoy's final appearances as Spock , who acted as a mentor to his younger self, played by Zachary Quinto. The third movie, 2016's Star Trek Beyond, paid tribute to the late Leonard Nimoy, and celebrated the franchise's 50th anniversary. With all three of the J.J. Abrams Star Trek movies available on Paramount+, fans have the chance to compare the performances of the exceptional Kelvin timeline cast with their Star Trek: The Original Series predecessors. In doing so, they can see how perfect Abrams' Star Trek movie cast were.

Rebel Moon Proves Star Trek Blew It With J.J. Abrams Movies Best New Character

6 star trek: the original series movies & 4 star trek: the next generation movies are on max.

10 Star Trek movies are currently streaming on Max and are no longer available on Paramount+. All six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies and the four Star Trek: The Next Generation movies switched to Max on New Year's Day 2024. A similar thing happened before, when Max streamed the 10 TOS and TNG movies on the service between November 2022 and July 2023, suggesting that this is likely a temporary arrangement. Until further notice, however, fans in the US who wish to stream classics like Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan or Star Trek: First Contact will have to do so via Max.

It's worth pointing out that distribution and streaming rights are different for movies than they are for TV shows, which could explain the temporary agreement between Paramount+ and Max. Many of the Star Trek movies were big commercial hits that had broad crossover appeal for theater audiences. It makes sense, therefore, for a streamer like Max to pick such broadly enjoyable Trek movies like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home to feature on the service during the cold and miserable winter months.

Star Trek: Prodigy is streaming on Netflix

After being canceled by Paramount+, Star Trek: Prodigy spent the second half of 2023 looking for a new streaming home. Prodigy 's cancelation was particularly surprising because a second season was already well into development at the time that the axe fell. The prospect of 20 brand-new episodes of a Star Trek show must have sweetened the deal for Netflix, who bought the streaming rights for Star Trek: Prodigy seasons 1 and 2. Prodigy premiered on Netflix on Christmas Day 2023 , and all 20 episodes of season 1 are available to stream on the service.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will premiere later in 2024, although it's unclear if it will have a weekly release schedule or be dropped on Netflix in one go. Prodigy season 2 is one of the big Star Trek highlights of 2024 so it does feel odd that it will be taking place on Netflix, rather than on Paramount+. Regardless, the wealth of Star Trek shows and movies available to stream across multiple platforms highlights the broad appeal of the franchise to viewers new and old.

Every Star Trek show except Star Trek: Prodigy is now streaming on Paramount+.

Every Chris Pine Star Trek movie is streaming now on Paramount+.

The 6 TOS and 4 TNG movies are streaming now on Max.

All episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy season 1 are streaming now on Netflix.

  • Trivia After production on the film was completed, and a month before the release, Anton Yelchin died in a freak vehicle accident at age 27. During the ending credits, there is a dedication that reads, "For Anton." J.J. Abrams announced that Chekov would not be recast, "I would say you can't replace him. There will be no new casting. I can't imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."
  • Goofs The amount of ships and soldiers that the enemy has in its swarm changes dramatically during the final battle, from a few thousand to tens/hundreds of thousands when they attack the station. However, previously in the film, it is stated that the planet has deep and large underground caverns so it is entirely possible that there were more ships underground. Also, the amount of soldiers that would be needed to pilot all the ships would be huge as it was shown that they contain at least one soldier in each ship. But when they were watching the video logs near the film's ending, Captain Edison clearly states that they found drones. It is quite possible that the bulk of the enemy fleet is made up of drones and controlled by the hive mind that the music disrupts.

Doctor 'Bones' McCoy : [after removing shrapnel from Spock] Yeah. They say it hurts less if it's a surprise.

Commander Spock : If I may adopt a parlance with which you are familiar, I can confirm your theory to be horseshit.

  • Crazy credits There is a giant green energy-hand, in the closing credits, mentioned in the movie as one of the possibilities for a ship lost in space.

How to Watch Every Star Trek Movie Online

Author Avatar

Ready to boldly go where no man has gone before? Dock your ship at the nearest space station, and prepare for warp speed, Star Trek fans! Here’s a handy captain’s log for determining which streaming service your favorite Star Trek films are on.

If you’ve never jumped into these, there’s a common rule that only the even-numbered movies are good in the Trek franchise. ( Wrath of Khan , Voyage Home , Undiscovered Country , and First Contact are all fun. Nemesis is the exception to the rule.)

Star Trek Movies Online Streaming Guide

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

When a destructive space entity is spotted approaching Earth, Admiral Kirk (William Shatner) must resume command of the Starship Enterprise. It’s up to him and his crew to intercept, examine, and hopefully stop it before it can cause any more harm.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

This one is often cited as the best Star Trek movie of all time! Admiral James T. Kirk is feeling old; the prospect of accompanying the Enterprise on a two-week cadet cruise is not helping to make him feel any younger. All bets are off, however, once the training cruise transforms into a life or death struggle. The hated Khan (Ricardo Montalban) has escaped from years of exile, and is preparing to harness the power of creation itself.

High stakes, fun twists, a great score from James Horner, and one of the most memorable endings in movie history help make this a must-watch!

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

Admiral Kirk and his bridge crew embark on a mission - this time the stakes are personal: They must recover the body of their beloved comrade, Spock (Leonard Nimoy). To return to the restricted Genesis planet, however, they will have to risk their careers and steal the since-decommissioned Enterprise. Worth the price of admission if only to see Christopher Lloyd as a Klingon.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

Definitely the funniest Trek flick. Now fugitives of the Federation for their daring rescue of Spock, Kirk and his crew begin their journey home to face justice. As they near Earth, they find it at the mercy of a mysterious alien presence whose signals are slowly destroying the planet. In a desperate attempt to answer the call of the probe, Kirk and his crew race back to the late twentieth century. The world they once knew has since turned more alien than anything they’ve encountered in the far reaches of the galaxy!

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Captain Kirk and his crew must contend with Spock’s half brother, Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill). He has made enemies by kidnapping three diplomats and hijacking the Enterprise in his obsessive search for God. In the start of the movie, Captain Kirk climbs a mountain. Here’s a song about it.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

On the eve of retirement, Kirk and McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are charged with assassinating the Klingon High Chancellor and imprisoned. The Enterprise crew must help them escape to thwart a conspiracy aimed at sabotaging the last best hope for peace. This entry is fuses action with a murder mystery, and it’s an under-appreciated gem.

Star Trek: Generations

The first of the films to feature the crew of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the Enterprise-D find themselves at odds with the renegade scientist Soran (Malcolm McDowell). Only one man can help Picard stop Soran from destroying entire star systems … but he’s been dead for 78 years.

Star Trek: First Contact

The Borg, a relentless race of cyborgs, are on a direct course for Earth. Violating orders to stay away from the battle, Captain Picard and the crew of the newly-commissioned USS Enterprise E pursue the Borg back in time to prevent the invaders from changing Federation history and assimilating the galaxy.

This is the closest the Trek franchise comes to an outright action movie. Alice Krige is a great Borg Queen, and Alfre Woodard is really great acting opposite Patrick Stewart. Some have speculated that James Cromwell’s flawed visionary, Zefram Cochrane, is meant to represent Gene Roddenberry himself.

Star Trek: Insurrection

The Son’a aren’t the only ones interested in taking over the planet of the Ba’ku; Starfleet is after it too. Captain Picard and the crew of the Enterprise can see the planet for more than just its “regenerative” properties, however, and it’s soon up to them to defend not only the planet’s people - but the very ideals upon which the Federation itself was founded.

Star Trek: Nemesis

After the wedding of William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) to Deanna Troi (Marina Sirtis), Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise receive a troubling message from Starfleet. A coup has resulted in the installation of a new Romulan political leader, Shinzon (Tom Hardy), who claims to seek peace with the human-backed United Federation of Planets. Once in enemy territory, the captain and his crew make a startling discovery: Shinzon is human, a slave from the Romulan sister planet of Remus, and has a secret, shocking relationship to Picard himself.

This one was not received well, and it put the Next Generation crew on ice.

Produced and directed by J.J. Abrams, this film reimagines the original cast and reboots the Star Trek universe. James Kirk (Chris Pine) is a delinquent, thrill-seeking Iowa farm boy. Spock (Zachary Quinto) is half-Vulcan, raised in a logic-based society that rejects all emotion. Bitter rivals out the gate, fiery instinct clashes with calm reason. But they’ll need to work together if they’re to lead their crew through unimaginable danger, and boldly go where no one has gone before. The young cast re-energizes the series and Michael Giacchino’s propulsive score helps the movie soar. Keep your eyes peeled for a pre-Thor Chris Hemsworth in a brief appearance as Kirk’s dad.

Star Trek Into Darkness

The crew of the Enterprise is called back home only to find the fleet detonated and the world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one-man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

Star Trek Beyond

The USS Enterprise crew encounters a mysterious new enemy lurking in the furthest reaches of uncharted space. They’re about to have their loyalties and skills put to the ultimate test. Idris Elba flexes his muscles as the main villain.

If you’re still craving more Trek beyond the movies, you can also find the many TV series widely available on streaming platforms:

Space. The Final Frontier. The U.S.S. Enterprise embarks on a five year mission to explore the galaxy. The Enterprise is under the command of Captain James T. Kirk with First Officer Mr. Spock, from the planet Vulcan. Their mission is to explore strange new worlds, to seek new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no man has gone before.

Here's Where You Can Stream Or Rent Every Star Trek Movie

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

( Welcome to Where to Watch , which provides a clear and simple answer to the question, "Hey, where can I watch this thing?" In this edition: the Star Trek franchise .)

Sometimes you look up and can't believe that a franchise has lasted for even half as long as it has. (Seriously, how many "Die Hard" movies can anyone possibly make?) Other times, the longevity and pop-cultural impact go well beyond self-explanatory, with audiences making their voices heard that there still remains a vociferous fanbase for the foreseeable future. That's the essence of "Star Trek," George Roddenberry and D.C. Fontana's idealistic and aspirational vision for the future. There's a good reason its message of hope, diversity, and unapologetic social commentary has endured for decades.

Whether you're a newcomer to the franchise or a longtime fan, the sheer amount of "Trek" available at a moment's notice can be overwhelming at times. That's where I come in. Think of me as your tour guide, walking you through all thirteen "Star Trek" movies produced thus far and where to stream or rent them.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture

Where to stream:  Paramount+

In "Star Trek," the future is ... beige? Okay, look, not even the immensely popular sci-fi franchise was immune from the "Little Brother Syndrome" of having "The Original Series" airing on television in syndication for as long as it did. Everyone knew that the real prestige came from the big screen, and so "The Motion Picture" misguidedly did away with its iconic color palette in favor of a more grown-up look. I can't question the instinct to play things a little safe for the first-ever cinematic venture, but thankfully this phase didn't last very long, and "The Motion Picture" did enough to justify several more (better-looking) sequels.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Where to stream: Paramount+

"Wrath of Khan" is commonly regarded as the absolute best "Trek" movie, and whoever regarded that in the first place was absolutely right. The jump in quality from movie to movie in terms of both storytelling and visual splendor is shocking, and it's worth noting that "Wrath of Khan" beat the MCU to the bunch by decades in terms of cross-media storytelling. Audiences who maybe weren't as well-versed in "The Original Series," particularly the episode "Space Speed" that featured Khan Noonien Singh's initial appearance, wouldn't have missed a beat as the movie deftly reintroduced the villain in the ultimate test of Captain James T. Kirk's abilities. If any newcomers watched "Star Trek: Into Darkness" and were just as confused as the characters when Benedict Khan-berbatch dramatically snarled out his name to a bunch of people who had never even heard of him, uh, trust me when I say both Khan and the dramatic death of a pivotal member of the crew are handled far better here.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock

"Star Trek" has never been shy about including absolutely absurd sci-fi concepts, but I would argue that's half the fun in the first place. The mental gymnastics involved in bringing Spock back after the events of the second film don't entirely make sense, but who can deny the pleasures of watching the unparalleled friendship between Spock and Kirk reestablished after everything they went through together in the prior movies and all 79 episodes of "The Original Series." In another instance of following the grand tradition of the franchise, "The Search for Spock" also delves into the spiritual side of the universe and serves as star Leonard Nimoy's feature film directorial debut. What couldn't that man do?

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home

You've probably heard about the "Star Trek" movie with time travel and all the whales before. But what might surprise you is that the "Star Trek" movie with time travel and all the whales is legitimately a blast. "The Voyage Home" finally brings the franchise's childlike love for time travel to the fore and deposits the beloved crew in a place and time entirely out of their depth: Earth in the late 20th Century. Their mission: save the whales. Once again directed by Nimoy, he fully embraces the inherent goofiness and charm of "Trek" by playing up the "fish out of water" joys of seeing such futuristic voyagers thrown back into then-contemporary times. Pavel Chekov finds himself a victim of Cold War anxiety, Scotty holds a computer mouse to his ear and says "Hello, computer," and it's all wrapped up in an extremely unsubtle environmental metaphor. This is as pure "Trek" as it gets.

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Every franchise has its dud. "The Final Frontier" is the result of a tonal mishmash, a bit of an ego trip (William Shatner takes over directing duties on this one with ... interesting results), and some really bizarre ideas as a result of a shaky script. For example, Kirk goes mountain climbing and is saved from a nasty death by Spock showing up in a pair of rocket-powered shoes. And that's in the very first scene! The rest of the plot isn't much to write home about, but as far as franchise low points go ... well, it could've been much worse. High praise, I know.

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country

Early "Star Trek" did much to build up Klingons as the Soviets to Starfleet's United States and "The Undiscovered Country" marks the point where Kirk's unease and mistrust towards the alien race turns into outright bigotry. It's an unexpectedly dark place to bring such a famous character, but the planned send-off for the original crew asked for high stakes to match. In their totality, the original crew would never share a scene together again, but the ending is as fitting a farewell as any fan could ask for.

Star Trek: Generations

As you can probably tell, "Star Trek Generations" is the franchise's most dour, self-serious installment yet. Okay, not really. If anything, this movie only suffers from trying too  hard to give us the crossover we've been waiting for between Jean Luc Picard from "The Next Generation" and the esteemed James T. Kirk from the originals. Its heart is in the right place, even if production difficulties and cast availability didn't quite make this one as special as it could've been. Regardless, there's an undeniable joy in seeing "The Next Generation" crew come into their own on the big screen as well as the fleeting moments that Picard and Kirk share.

Star Trek: First Contact

Despite only taking some tentative first steps towards serialization, it's impressive how much "The Next Generation" established the Borg as a terrifying force to be reckoned with. This next phase of "Trek" doesn't quite work as well for those who haven't seen the television series that gave the new crew their start in the first place, but "First Contact" mostly justifies those years of fan investment by pitting Picard & Co. against the might of the Borg Queen . Jonathan Frakes as William Ryker carries on the Nimoy tradition of pulling double-duty as actor and director, the Borg Queen chews up the scenery alongside a frazzled Data, and Picard gets a monologue to end all monologues.

Star Trek: Insurrection

Making a movie is hard, folks. It's even harder when trying to take the foundation of a beloved television series and adapt it to the big screen in a way that doesn't merely come across like an extended episode. That's the tricky pitfall that "Stark Trek: Insurrection" falls into and doesn't quite make its way out of. But at this point, the strong attachment to the cast and characters likely overrides any fans' logic-based assessments of the film's quality. We tend to be more like Kirk than Spock if you will.

Star Trek: Nemesis

In the annals of "Star Trek" history, only "Nemesis" has the distinct honor of being the one that causes viewers to point to the screen and go, "Wait, is that Tom Hardy?!" This mixed bag of a movie also shares many of the ups and downs of the previous "Generation" entries, though with the added complication of a whole host of deleted scenes and scrapped character moments that surely would've added much more heart to the proceedings. Unfortunately, plans for future sequels would eventually be put on hold and the franchise's big-screen future seemed uncertain ... that is until J.J. Abrams came along.

Star Trek (2009)

Where to stream: Netflix

What's better than a reboot/prequel? Why, a reboot/prequel that bends over backward to avoid erasing prior continuity, thereby establishing a whole new alternate universe in which new stories can be told without affecting what came before, of course! In all honesty, this goofy approach to revitalizing a franchise is as quintessentially "Trek" as it gets. With a steady dose of time travel and wormhole shenanigans, J.J. Abrams took the series in a much more action-oriented direction, perfectly casting a new crew to embody the familiar roles of the original cast and introducing a new generation of fans to the series. It's not without its fair share of the typical style-over-substance problems that plague many a modern blockbuster, but it gets the job done well enough and sets the new movies up for a clean slate of endless possibilities, truly going where no one had gone before.

... and then the next movie happened.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Folks, I can't even pretend to remain objective about this one. Many find "Star Trek Into Darkness" enjoyable as an edgy, darker-toned addition to the franchise. Others find it to be an unforgivable blight on the classic series that should be stripped from canon altogether. I'm more in the camp that the performances of this cast have never been better and that Abrams' direction has rarely been slicker, but almost every instinct on a script level couldn't be more wrongheaded. It's simply a waste that rather than following up on his own previous movie and jumping headfirst into original stories, Abrams essentially remakes the most famous entry in "Trek" lore but does so with very little understanding of what worked in "Wrath of Khan" and why. It's a slog, but an eminently rewatchable one. If that makes any sense.

Star Trek Beyond

Where to stream:  Hulu, Paramount+

Now,  this is podracing!

Whoa, sorry, wrong franchise.

Now, this is what I'm talkin' about! "Star Trek" needed something of a course correction after "Into Darkness," and director Justin Lin couldn't have been better suited for the job with "Beyond." For my money, this is the franchise's most mature, philosophical, and forward-looking film that perfectly marries the idea of an extended "The Original Series" episode with the demands of blockbuster filmmaking. Chris Pine's Kirk has never felt more lived-in and human, his bond with Spock and Bones has never been more believable, and the sheer exhaustion everyone feels with being stuck in space for such a prolonged amount of time reflects an intriguing and bold idea that few "Trek" stories have explored before. It's an extremely worthy sequel and one that feels profoundly bittersweet amid the passing of both Anton Yelchin and Leonard Nimoy. "Beyond" is a minor miracle of a film and one that should've spawned several more adventures with this cast by now. Maybe in an alternate universe , yeah?

Star Trek Chris Pine Karl Urban Zachary Quinto Simon Pegg

They’re boldly going back.

Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “ Star Trek ” stars Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The six actors first stepped into their respective iconic roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Scotty in 2009’s “Star Trek,” directed by Abrams, which reset the “Trek” timeline and allowed for the reboot to exist unencumbered from the hundreds of hours of “Trek” continuity that had come before. The actors returned in two sequels, 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin.

Popular on Variety

Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Paramount was close to bringing back this cast once before: In 2018, S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones”) had signed up to direct a sequel that would have reunited Pine’s Kirk with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth reprising his performance from the 2009 “Star Trek.” That film never materialized, however, after Paramount reportedly couldn’t close a deal with Pine and Hemsworth.

Since then, insiders say the studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back.

Paramount has also explored several other avenues for “Trek” features, none of which seem to have ultimately borne fruit. Quentin Tarantino reportedly cooled on a “Star Trek” script he was pursuing with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. In late 2019, Paramount tapped “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a “Trek” movie that Hawley planned to feature new actors playing new characters. But when Emma Watts became president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group a few months later, insiders say she paused all “Trek” development, including Hawley’s film , to decide how best to move forward with one of the studio’s crown jewel franchises. With Watts’ departure from Paramount in September, it’s unclear what the current “Trek” film portends for other development for the franchise, including a screenplay by “Fear the Walking Dead” co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez .

Bringing the 2009 “Trek” cast back could prove a challenge given they’ve all had busy schedules since “Beyond.” Pine added the “Wonder Woman” franchise to his resume and he’ll next appear in Olivia Wilde’s thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the black-ops film “Violence of Action.” Quinto headlined the AMC series “NOS4A2,” and starred in the Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and its 2020 Netflix film adaptation. Saldana continued her run as Gamora in several Marvel Studios films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Endgame”; she’ll star in “Avatar 2” this year and in “Guardians Vol. 3” in 2023. Urban appeared in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and he’ll continue his performance as Billy Butcher on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Boys” in June. Cho starred in acclaimed indies “Columbus” and “Searching,” and he starred in Netflix’s live-action adaption of the anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” And Pegg starred with Nick Frost on Amazon’s horror comedy series “Truth Seekers,” and he’ll reprise his role as Benji in “Mission: Impossible 7” in 2023.

One member of the 2009 “Trek” cast, however, sadly cannot join them. Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, died in an accident in June 2016, a month before “Beyond” opened in theaters. At that film’s premiere at San Diego Comic Con, the cast, filmmakers and invited guests sat in a full minute of silence in tribute to the late actor.

In 2009, the iconic sci-fi series Star Trek received a 21st-century cinematic reboot with the release of the movie also titled Star Trek. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film introduced a new generation of viewers to the beloved characters of the USS Enterprise crew as they embark on a thrilling adventure in space. The plot of the movie revolves around James T. Kirk, played by Chris Pine, a rebellious young man who finds himself suddenly thrust into the role of captain of the Enterprise. Alongside him are a cast of familiar faces including Spock, played by Zachary Quinto, who serves as Kirk's first officer and confidant. Also present are fan favorites like Scotty, played by Simon Pegg, and Uhura, played by Zoe Saldana.

The film opens with a thrilling action sequence as a massive starship attacks the USS Kelvin, resulting in the death of Kirk's father. From there, we see a montage of Kirk's youth leading up to the present day, where he finds himself on the brink of expulsion from Starfleet Academy due to his bad behavior. However, fate intervenes when a crisis arises and Kirk finds himself onboard the Enterprise, working alongside a crew of talented individuals as they face off against an enemy hell-bent on destruction.

Throughout the movie, we see Kirk's character arc as he learns what it means to be a true leader and begins to take on the responsibilities entrusted to him. Along with the charismatic Pine, the rest of the cast put on memorable performances, bringing beloved characters to life in a fresh and exciting way. Quinto, in particular, stands out as a Spock who struggles to reconcile his logical Vulcan upbringing with his human emotions, leading to some powerful and poignant moments.

The action is non-stop throughout Star Trek, with thrilling space battles and intense hand-to-hand combat sequences that keep the audience on the edge of their seats. The film also carries a good balance of the comedic and dramatic elements that the franchise is known for, resulting in a movie that will make audiences laugh, cry, and cheer throughout.

The special effects in Star Trek are particularly impressive, with stunning visuals that bring the vast expanse of space to life. There are also plenty of nods to the original series, including appearances by Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in the original 1960s TV show. However, the film manages to stand on its own as a modern sci-fi epic, catering to both die-hard fans and newcomers alike.

While some may criticize the movie for its more action-packed and fast-paced approach compared to the slower, more contemplative episodes of the original series, it's hard to deny that Star Trek is a thrilling ride from start to finish. The film simultaneously honors the legacy of the franchise while updating it for the modern era, introducing a new cast of characters that audiences couldn't help but fall in love with.

Overall, Star Trek is a must-watch for sci-fi fans, particularly those who are fans of the series. It's a bold and exciting reboot that manages to capture the spirit of what made the original show so iconic while bringing it to a whole new generation. With top-tier performances, stunning visuals, and thrilling action sequences, it's a movie that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats from beginning to end.

Star Trek is a 2009 science fiction movie with a runtime of 2 hours and 6 minutes. It has received mostly positive reviews from critics and viewers, who have given it an IMDb score of 7.9 and a MetaScore of 82.

Chris Pine was surprised by new Star Trek 4 update

"As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see."

preview for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Official Trailer (Paramount+)

Speaking in an interview with B usiness Insider , the Dungeons & Dragons star revealed that he was surprised by the news that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey had joined the project as a new screenwriter (via Variety ).

"There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot," he said.

When asked if he would ever consider reprising his role as Captain James T. Kirk for the films, the actor added: "I honestly don't know. As it's always been with Trek, I just wait and see."

Pine first starred as Captain Kirk (originally played by William Shatner) in 2009's Star Trek , before reprising the role for 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond (2016).

A follow-up for Star Trek Beyond has reportedly been in the works since the film's release nearly eight years ago, but it has since faced numerous setbacks.

Director Matt Shakman departed the project in August 2022, causing Paramount to delay the film indefinitely and removing it from their release calendar . Screenwriter Lindsey Anderson Beer subsequently left the movie in September 2023 in order to direct Pet Sematary: Bloodlines .

However, Beer insisted that a fourth S tar Trek was "still on the tracks" despite lengthy delays, with Variety's report in March confirming that Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot were still involved in the film.

Paramount is yet to confirm any further details about the film, however it's likely that Pine will be returning for the fourth instalment alongside fellow stars Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Star Trek 2009 Ending & Movies Future Explained

The 10 best kung fu movie stars of all time, 10 movie franchises where the first film is the best one.

  • Auditioning for J.J. Abrams was fun for Chris Pine. Acting with a capital A, talking phasers and battleships.
  • Pine initially didn't think he was good enough for Star Trek. J.J. Abrams made the audition fun and reactive.
  • Playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek launched Pine's career to new heights, leading to other major roles in Hollywood.

Chris Pine fondly recalls his audition with J.J. Abrams to become Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek (2009) . Pine became the first actor besides WIlliam Shatner to play the iconic Captain of the Starship Enterprise, a role he reprised in two sequels, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond . Star Trek launched Pine's career to another level. Chris went on to star in Wonder Woman, Hell or High Water, Dungeons and Dragons , and Pine is now the co-writer and director of the new film, Poolman.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly 's Role Call to discuss the biggest roles of his career, Pine described auditoning for director J.J. Abrams to join the cast of Star Trek (2009) as Captain Kirk. Read Pine's quote and watch the video below:

Ha! Star Trek! Incredible… I went out for it. Didn’t get it. Didn’t think anything of it. 3, 4, 5 months had passed so I’d completely forgotten about it. And then I went off to do this film and my agent said, ‘Do you want to go in for Star Trek again?’ And I said, ‘Didn’t I already go in?’ I didn’t get the part. I didn’t think I was any good. And they said, ‘They want you to go back in and audition for J.J.’ I remember going in, and J.J. was really fun. And, you know, it’s ridiculous. You’re sitting, standing, acting in an office in Hollywood, and you’re talking about phasers and thrusters, and the battleship’s going down, and Klingons are coming after you. It’s acting with a capital A. J.J.’s very giggly. He’s very reactive. It’s what an actor loves. We perform for people, and he’s giving you a lot, right? So, I did that, and then I went out. And then he said, ‘Spock’s here.’ The guy’s who’s playing Spock, who’s Zachary Quinto. And I knew that Zach was Spock, and I’d known Zach because we worked out at the same gym with the same trainer. Very Hollywood. Same nutritionist and acupuncturist. Auditioning is very… I found it very fun. It’s very disheartening. And you work your way up, and you’re doing TV… And it’s much more the case back then than it is now. Where it’s like, to be in a film was a big F—ing deal.

J.J. Abrams' Star Trek 2009 saw the young Kirk and Spock join forces to save Earth. A deep dive into how Star Trek 2009 ended and what it all means.

Chris Pine Doesn't Know What's Happening With Star Trek 4

He would love to return as captain kirk.

Chris Pine is ready to play Captain Kirk again in Star Trek 4 , but he doesn't know what's happening with it. When Entertainment Weekly asked him about Star Trek 4 , Pine replied:

You may have more information than I do. So, I don’t know. I just read the trades that someone got hired to write a new script. I was under the impression that there was already a script, but I have no idea. I’d love to do it, and if they want to do it, fantastic.”

Pine reiterated his lack of insight into Star Trek 4 in an interview with Business Insider :

I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with ‘Trek,’ I just wait and see.

Star Trek 4 recently brought in Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant) to take a crack at the screenplay, which remains in development and is reportedly considered a priority at Paramount Pictures. J.J. Abrams is producing Star Trek 4 but no new director has been named since Matt Shakman left the film in 2022 to direct Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four . Meanwhile, Paramount announced an Untitled Star Trek Origin Movie directed by Toby Haynes ( Star Wars: Andor ) , which is aiming for 2025 theatrical release. But Chris Pine is just waiting for a green light to return as Captain Kirk in Star Trek 4.

‘Star Trek’ Film Isn’t On Chris Pine’s Viewing Screen

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Eight years after the last Star Trek film, Chris Pine is among the many who would like to know if there’s another voyage planned.

Pine is making the rounds to promote his new film, Poolman , and didn’t have anything to share on when the space franchise may be refreshed.

“I honestly don’t know,” Pine told Business Insider this week when asked about a new Star Trek . “There was something in the news of a new writer coming on board. I thought there was already a script, but I guess I was wrong, or they decided to pivot. As it’s always been with Trek , I just wait and see.”

Pine was clear that communication from Paramount about the franchise has been fairly minimal ever since the release of Star Trek Beyond in 2016.

While television and streaming have lots of Star Trek projects, there has been no movement on a film. Rumors that Quentin Tarantino was interested in a Star Trek project never came to fruition, and multiple scripts have apparently been floated and fizzled.

Meanwhile, Chris Pine and many others wait and wonder.
