  • Unexpected birth of child, up to $25,000 (not payable during the nine weeks before or after your due date)
  • Non-medical evacuation from a remote location, up to $6,000, including search and rescue services
  • Replacement of prescription glasses or contact lenses due to theft, loss or breakage, and/or replacement of a hearing aid due to theft, loss or breakage, up to $1,000
  • Medical follow-up in Canada including up to semi-private accommodation in a hospital, rehabilitation centre or convalescent home (up to $1,000), up to $100 per day for private nursing, up to $300 for licensed ambulance or taxi services and up to $300 to rent or purchase essential medical appliances, for 15 days after your return date

Medical coverage also provides a hospital allowance to cover incidental expenses, such as TV rental and telephone, as well as one-way economy fare to return home if medically necessary (and includes a travelling companion or medical attendant), as well as baggage return, pet return and return of dependent children. Keep in mind that if you are travelling by cruise ship and the cruise departs from or stops at any ports in the U.S., you must purchase a Worldwide plan for the full duration of your trip.

It’s important to note that there is a waiting period with the emergency medical insurance that is laid out as follows:

  • If your policy was purchased within seven days after departure, there is no coverage for any disease or illness (either arising or exhibiting symptoms) during the first 48 hours of the effective date, and any related expenses after the first 48 hours, or
  • If your policy was purchased more than seven days after departure, there is no coverage for any disease or illness (either arising or exhibiting symptoms) in the first seven days from the effective date, including any related expenses.

Family & Friends: This plan is available with the Emergency Medical plan and covers up to two travellers aged 59 years old and under and up to six dependent children. The travellers named in this plan do not have to be the parents or guardians of the dependent children.

Trip Cancellation & Interruption: This coverage option reimburses you for insured travel expenses (such as hotels or prepaid excursions) if you have to cancel or interrupt your trip due to a covered risk. The benefits depend on the reason for the trip cancellation or interruption.

Trip Interruption Only: This coverage option reimburses you for insured travel expenses (such as hotels or prepaid excursions) if you have to interrupt your trip after departure due to a covered risk.

Accidental Death or Dismemberment: This coverage option offers reimbursement in the event you die, or lose the use of one or more limbs, during a flight or while entering or leaving a common carrier, defined as a boat, cruise ship, airline, bus, taxi, train or other similar vehicle that is licensed and intended to carry passengers for hire. This plan also includes a 24-hour Accident benefit of $25,000 that is paid out in the event of death or dismemberment as a result of an accident in any other situation.

MyFlyt Service: When your flight is delayed by two or more hours, this service automatically gives you access to an airport lounge, as long as you register your flight at least one hour before the original scheduled departure time. If the airport lounge is overbooked or there is no airport lounge, you will instead receive an immediate $40 cash payout via Interac , PayPal or bank transfer. Yes. This optional coverage can be purchased as an endorsement or add-on to the Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption plan, the All Inclusive Holiday Package and the Non-Medical Package.

If you decide to cancel your trip for any reason other than a covered risk, TuGo will pay up to 50% of either of the following, whichever is less:

  • Prepaid travel costs that are non-refundable and non-transferable
  • Up to the sum insured selected before departure which is non-refundable and non-transferable

To be eligible for this coverage, you must buy your insurance in the first five days after making any initial payment, whether it’s a deposit, partial payment or full payment or at any time before any cancellation penalties apply.

To be reimbursed under this coverage you must cancel your trip more than five days before your departure date.

In general, CFAR adds anywhere between 20% and 33% to your insurance premium.

TuGo will not pay any medical expenses related to any medical condition that is not stable for a set period of time.

A medical condition is considered stable when all of the following are true:

  • There has been no deterioration of the medical condition as determined by a physician or other registered medical professional.
  • There have been no new symptoms or findings or more frequent or severe symptoms or findings.
  • There has been no change in treatment by a physician or other registered medical practitioner.

In addition, TuGo will not pay any benefits or services for the following:

  • For travellers 59 years and under on a trip of less than 35 days for any medical condition that is not stable on or within the seven days before departure
  • For travellers 59 years and under on a trip of more than 35 days for any medical condition that is not stable on or within the 90 days before departure
  • For travellers 60 years and over on any length of trip, any medical condition that is not stable on or within the 180 days before departure

There are a number of scenarios not covered by travel insurance and it’s critical to know what not to do before you make a claim. The following are exclusions to all coverages provided by TuGo travel insurance:

  • Your participation in or voluntary exposure to acts of war or terrorism
  • Death, disablement or injury caused by radioactive contamination or by the utilization of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons
  • Any medical condition that is the result of you not following prescribed treatment or medication
  • Consumption or use of illegal or controlled drugs
  • Your participating, training or practicing in any areas that have been closed off to public access for the following activities: Backcountry skiing/snowboarding, downhill freestyle skiing/snowboarding in organized competitions, high-risk snowmobiling, ice climbing, mountaineering, rock climbing
  • Your participation in or training for any of the following sports or activities: Barrel racing, bronco riding, bull riding, chariot racing, chuck wagon racing, harness racing, rodeo bareback racing, rodeo clowning, rodeo team roping, steer wrestling/chute dogging, trick riding
  • Any medical condition where the purpose of the trip is to seek treatment, advice or services for that condition
  • Routine prenatal or postnatal care or pregnancy, delivery or complications of either in the nine weeks before or after the expected due date
  • Your child born during the trip, except as specified under the Unexpected Birth of a Child benefit
  • Your voluntary termination of a pregnancy or resulting complications
  • Your suicide or self-inflicted injury
  • Your commission or attempted commision of a criminal offence or illegal act
  • Non-emergency, experimental or elective treatment or procedures
  • Cosmetic surgeries, procedures and/or treatments

To be eligible for medical insurance with TuGo, the following must apply:

  • You are a Canadian resident
  • You are not travelling against a physician or other registered medical practitioner’s advice
  • You have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition
  • You are not receiving palliative care or palliative care has not been recommended

In addition, for travellers aged 55 and over, you must not:

  • Have received medical advice not to travel
  • Suffer from a medical condition in a terminal stage
  • Suffer from kidney failure treated with dialysis
  • Have been diagnosed with or treated for metastatic cancer in the last five years
  • Have been prescribed or treated with home oxygen in the past 12 months

You can file a claim online 24/7 by visiting the online claim system at myTuGo.com where you can log in with your insurance policy number and start a new claim. There you can complete, print and return the forms by email or mail. TuGo recommends that you submit your claim form within 60 days from the day you were treated.

For an emergency medical claim, it’s important to provide all itemized bills and receipts including:

  • Your full name
  • Date(s) of service
  • Amount charged
  • Types of service/diagnosis
  • Prescriptions with the itemized pharmacy-issue prescription receipt

For a trip cancellation and trip interruption claim, you’ll need to provide:

  • The original unused tickets or e-tickets
  • Original itemized, dated invoices and receipts from all travel suppliers showing full payment, taxes and fees paid
  • A copy of the originally scheduled travel arrangements or itinerary
  • Proof of cancellation from all airlines, hotel or accommodation providers, tour operators, cruise lines and any other traveller suppliers for unused expenses
  • A statement from the travel agency, airline or travel supplier documenting their refund policy and copies of all refunds and/or credits for cancelled or unused expenses
  • A medical certificate for any claim before departure stating the diagnosis, onset of symptoms, dates and type of treatment and the reason why travel was not possible or if after departure, the reason why it was necessary to interrupt the trip

For a baggage insurance claim, you’ll need to provide:

  • Proof that the lost, stolen or damaged baggage was reported to the most appropriate local authority, such as police, hotel manager, vacation rental, or airline
  • Proof of loss, such as a police report
  • If your baggage is damaged, a written estimate from a repair shop on the cost to repair

TuGo Travel Insurance FAQs

Does tugo pay for medical costs upfront.

According to the company, in many cases TuGo can work directly with the medical service provider, such as a hospital or clinic, to pay expenses directly due to its “network of preferred providers.” However, some hospitals will require a deposit upfront or will require you to pay expenses out-of-pocket. In this case, TuGo suggests opening a claim immediately and submitting your signed claims forms and any original itemized bills and receipts.

Does TuGo cover COVID-19?

Emergency medical care for COVID-19 is covered up the policy limits if before your date of departure you are travelling with all federal travel vaccine requirements issued by the Government of Canada for entry or return to Canada, if there are any. The company notes that as there currently is no federal vaccine requirement, TuGo’s coverage is provided regardless of vaccination status.

Does TuGo offer coverage extensions?

Yes. Your coverage is automatically extended for up to seven days if your return home is prevented due to a transportation delay. If you, your travelling companion or family member are hospitalized, your coverage will be extended for the length of your hospitalization, plus up to seven days after discharge. If you, your travelling companion or a family member are unwell but not hospitalized, your coverage will be extended for up to seven days. If you, your travelling companion or your family member are quarantined due to a positive COVID-19 test, your coverage will be automatically extended for up to 14 days.

You can also request an extension if you want to stay longer on your trip, provided you have not submitted a claim and have no intent to submit a claim, your policy has not already expired and your trip length is not longer than two years from the effective date of the original policy. If you have Emergency Medical insurance coverage, you can request an extension if you haven’t seen a physician or other registered medical practitioner since you left on your trip and you’re not currently experiencing any symptoms or have no reason to seek medical attention.

Does TuGo require a medical questionnaire?

Yes. Travellers aged 60 and over are required to complete a medical questionnaire to determine your insurance premium when purchasing the multi-trip annual worldwide medical insurance, the single-trip worldwide medical insurance and the single-trip excluding USA. medical insurance.

If you have to make a claim and if during the claims process TuGo discovers your answers to the medical questionnaire are false or inaccurate, a $15,000 US deductible will be applied to your claim, in addition to any other deductible you may have selected. Coverage will not be provided until you correct your answers and pay any additional premium that may be required.

Does TuGo have any age restrictions?

Yes. The All Inclusive Holiday Package is only available for travellers 59 years old and under. All travellers aged 60 and over are required to complete a medical questionnaire to determine their insurance premium. The company notes that its Emergency Medical insurance “covers all ages.”

When does my coverage with TuGo begin?

In general, if you purchase cancellation coverage, it begins the day you buy your policy and ends the day you make a claim or leave on your trip. Your interruption coverage, if purchased, begins when you leave home. Your delay coverage begins once an insured risk prevents you from returning home as scheduled.

Can I get a refund with TuGo?

In general, you can request a cancellation and full refund of your contract before the effective date of the contract (or the date the coverage begins) or during the 10 days following the date of purchase, with some exceptions. If your trip is cancelled before any penalties from the travel suppliers apply, you’ll get a full refund, less an administration fee.

Does TuGo offer a free look period?

Yes. TuGo gives you 10 days after the application date of the policy to review and cancel your contract if you’re not satisfied with it. A full refund is available as long as no travel has taken place and your policy has not expired.

ELIGIBILITY: Applicable to Canadian Students Studying Outside their Province or Territory of Residence At the time of application, you are eligible for coverage if: 1. You are 40 years and under; and, 2. You are a Canadian resident; and, 3. You are a student enrolled full-time or part-time in a school outside your province/territory of residence; or, 4. You are a student enrolled full-time or part-time in a school in Canada but participating in an exchange program at a school outside of your province/territory of residence; and, 5. You are not travelling against a physician or other registered medical practitioner’s advice; and, 6. You have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition; and, 7 You are not receiving palliative care or palliative care has not been recommended.

Applicable to Family Members of Students At the time of application, you are eligible for coverage if: 1. You are at least 15 days old; and, 2. You are 40 years and under; and, 3. You are Canadian resident; and, 4. You are a family member of a student who is either insured under a TuGo Student Policy for Canadian students or meets the eligibility requirements for a TuGo Student Policy; and, 5. You are not travelling against a physician or other registered medical practitioner’s advice; and, 6. You have not been diagnosed with a terminal condition; and, 7 You are not receiving palliative care or palliative care has not been recommended. Coverage is available for school breaks as long as the student is enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in a school.

Canadian resident is an insured who is eligible for or has a provincial or territorial government health care plan in place and: a) Is a Canadian citizen with a primary permanent residence in Canada; or, b) Has landed immigrant status in Canada and a primary permanent residence in Canada. NOTE: Any medical and related expenses in excess of $50,000, if you are not covered by a provincial or territorial government health care plan at the time your claim occurred.

PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS: the company will not be liable to provide coverage, services, or to pay claims for expenses incurred directly or indirectly as a result of any:    1. Medical condition which is not stable on or within the 90 days before the effective date of the Policy.    2. Any complications that develop after departure, related to a pre-existing medical condition that was not stable on or within the 90 days before the effective date of the Policy. Medical conditions and related complications that do not meet the stability requirements set out above are not covered.

Stable:  A medical condition is considered stable when all of the following statements are true: a) There has been no deterioration of the medical condition as determined by a physician or other registered medical practitioner, and b) There have been no new symptoms or findings or more frequent or severe symptoms or findings, and c) There has been no change in treatment by a physician or other registered medical practitioner or any alteration* in any medication related to the medical condition, and d) There has been no new treatment received, prescribed or recommended by a physician or other registered medical practitioner. *Alteration - The medication usage, dosage or type has been increased, decreased or stopped and/or a new medication has been prescribed. Alteration does not include: a) Changes in brand to an equivalent name brand or to an equivalent generic brand of the same or equivalent usage or dosage; or, b) Routine dosage adjustments within prescribed parameters for insulin or oral diabetes medication to ensure correct blood levels are maintained; blood sugar levels must be checked regularly and the medical condition must remain unchanged; or, c) Routine dosage adjustments within prescribed parameters for blood thinner medication to ensure correct blood levels are maintained; blood levels must be checked regularly and the medical condition must remain unchanged; or, d) A temporary stoppage of blood thinner medication up to a maximum of 24 hours if the stoppage is required for a surgery or a procedure; or, e) Usage changes due to the combination of several medications into one; the medical condition must remain unchanged.

EXTENSIONS:  You can extend your period of coverage before your Policy expires provided the total policy trip length does not exceed a maximum of 365 days. To extend your Policy, you can contact us during business hours. If you extend your coverage, the following condition applies: If you had a claim, sought medical attention or experienced any symptoms during the previous policy term, for the extension period, there will be no further coverage with respect to the medical condition, related medical condition, or for any subsequent treatment related to the medical condition, except as specified under the Maternity benefit. Under the Maternity benefit, we will continue to provide coverage during an extension for the same pregnancy up to the maximum limit of $25,000 under all policies combined, provided there has not been a lapse in coverage. Refer to the Maternity benefit for details.

REFUNDS: Refunds after the effective date of the Policy must be requested in writing. Refunds are not available if a claim has been or will be submitted. Full Refunds 1. When the request for refund is received BEFORE the effective date of the Policy, a full refund is available. 2. When the request for refund is received AFTER the effective date of the Policy, a full refund is available as follows: a) In the 10 days from the application date of the Policy when no travel has taken place; or, b) If you have not arrived in your province/territory or country of study, provided you were travelling directly to your province/territory or country of study (direct travel includes stopovers and layovers); or, c) If your student visa for entry to your country of study was refused; or, d) If you arrived in your country of study but entry into your country of study was denied. Refund requests must be submitted to us within the 90 days after the expiry date of the Policy. 

Partial Refunds 1. When travel has taken place, a partial refund less an administration fee is available. Refunds are calculated as follows: a) From the date the cancellation request is submitted to us; or, b) From the date you return to your province/territory of residence if a satisfactory proof of return is sent to us and the request is received by us within the 90 days after the date you return to your province/territory of residence; or, c) From the date you are no longer enrolled in a school or attending school in an exchange program outside your province/territory of residence if satisfactory proof that you are no longer enrolled in the school is sent to us and the request is received by us within the 90 days after your enrollment ended.

EXCLUSIONS: In addition to the Pre-existing Medical Condition Stability exclusion, we will not be liable to provide coverage or services, or to pay claims for expenses incurred directly or indirectly as a result of: 1. Any claim incurred after a physician advised you not to travel. 2. Any claim incurred after any other registered medical practitioner advised you not to travel. 3. A trip that is undertaken after the diagnosis of a terminal condition. 4. A trip that is undertaken while you are receiving palliative care or after palliative care has been recommended. 5. Medical conditions or any related medical conditions for which, before the effective date of the Policy, diagnostic tests took place, were scheduled to take place or were recommended and for which results had not yet been received on or before the effective date of the Policy. This includes diagnostic tests that were scheduled or were recommended on or before the effective date of the Policy, but had not yet taken place on or before the effective date of the Policy. This exclusion does not apply to: a) Tests to monitor an existing medical condition if there have been no new or more frequent symptoms, whether or not results have been received; or, b) Screening tests intended to prevent illness or to detect medical conditions before symptoms are noticed, whether or not results have been received. 6. The cost of any mandated test required for travel. 7. Medical conditions or any related medical conditions for which, on or before the effective date of the Policy, tests to follow up on the effectiveness or response to a procedure, surgery or hospitalization are scheduled to take place or recommended. This includes tests that were scheduled or recommended on or before the effective date of the Policy, but had not yet taken place on or before the effective date of the Policy. 8. Medical conditions or any related medical conditions for which before the effective date of the Policy, medical procedures, surgeries and/or referrals to a specialist were scheduled to take place or were recommended but had not yet taken place at the time of the effective date of the Policy. 9. Any medical condition, related medical condition or any subsequent treatment related to a medical condition for which you sought treatment and/or were experiencing any symptoms that were new or worsening after your departure from your province/territory of residence but before the effective date of this Policy, except as specified under the Maternity benefit and under the heading Period of Coverage, sub-heading Top-up. 10. Acute psychosis if drug or alcohol induced. 11. Any cancer (other than basal cell or squamous cell skin cancer and/or cancer that is in remission) for which you received or were recommended to receive active cancer treatment on or within the 90 days before the effective date of the Policy. This includes active cancer treatment that you were recommended to receive but chose to decline. 12. Tests and investigation except when performed at the time of initial emergency medical condition. 13. The continued treatment, recurrence or complication of a medical condition or related condition, following emergency treatment during your trip, if we determine that your emergency has ended, unless otherwise specified in a benefit. 14. a) Any medical condition, including symptoms of withdrawal, arising from, or in any way related to, your chronic use of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants whether prior to or during your trip. b) Any medical condition arising during your trip from, or in any way related to, the misuse or abuse of drugs or other intoxicants, or to the use or abuse of alcohol when you have reached a blood alcohol level of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood or when records indicate you were intoxicated and no blood alcohol level is specified. 15. Consumption or use of illegal or controlled drugs (based on the law where the cause of the claim occurred). 16. Any medical condition for which you are registered on a waiting list for treatment or diagnosis either in Canada or in your country of study. 17. Expenses incurred for emergency air transportation and any expenses incurred after emergency air transportation, when the emergency air transportation was not arranged by us. 18. Any medical condition or related expenses if we determine that you should transfer to another facility or could return to your province/territory of residence for treatment, and you choose not to, benefits will not be paid for further treatment related to the medical condition. 19. An official travel advisory issued by a Canadian government stating to “avoid all travel” or “avoid non-essential travel” regarding the country, region or city of your destination, before the date you travel to that destination (including any stopovers, layovers or any other destinations you are transiting through). If an official travel advisory is issued while you are travelling outside of Canada for the country, region or city of your destination after you have already arrived to that country, region or city, your coverage for an emergency or a medical condition related to the travel advisory will remain in place. This exclusion does not apply to claims for an emergency or a medical condition unrelated to the travel advisory or to claims incurred for COVID-19. 20. A medical condition for which symptoms arose or worsened or for which treatment by a physician or other registered medical practitioner was received during a temporary visit to your province/territory of residence during the period of coverage or any medical condition wholly or partly, directly or indirectly, related thereto. This exclusion does not apply if the treatment was for either: a) The unchanged use of prescribed drugs or medication for a stable medical condition, symptom or problem; or, b) A check-up where the physician or other registered medical practitioner observes no change in a previously noted medical condition, symptom or problem. 21. Treatment by a physician or other registered medical practitioner and expenses incurred while in your province/territory of residence. 22. Loss, theft, breakage of prescription glasses, contact lenses, prosthetic devices, hearing aids and dentures, except as specified under the Prescription Glasses/Contact Lenses/Hearing Aids benefit. 23. Any medical and related expenses in excess of $50,000, if you are not covered by a provincial or territorial government health care plan at the time your claim occurred. 24. Your participation in and/or voluntary exposure to acts of war or acts of terrorism. 25. Death, disablement or injury in any way caused by or contributed by radioactive contamination or by the utilization of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons (whether or not caused by acts of war or acts of terrorism). 26. Any medical condition that is the result of you not following treatment as prescribed to you, including prescribed or over the counter medication. 27. Your participating, training or practicing in any sports or activities as a professional athlete, or in any of the following sports or activities (whether as a professional athlete or not): • Hang gliding/paragliding • High risk motorized  speed activities • Ice climbing • Mountaineering • Parachuting/skydiving/ tandem skydiving • Rock climbing • Scuba diving or free diving over 40 metres 28. Your participating in, training, or practicing for any of the following sports or activities: • Barrel racing • Bronc riding • Bull riding • Chariot racing • Chuck wagon racing • Harness racing • Rodeo bareback racing • Rodeo clowning • Rodeo team roping • Steer wrestling/chute dogging • Trick riding 29. Any medical condition or recognized complication of a medical condition, where the purpose of your trip is to seek treatment, advice or services, and where the medical evidence indicates the treatment, advice or services received are related to that medical condition. 30. a) Routine pre-natal or post-natal care, except as specified under the Maternity benefit; or, b) Pregnancy, delivery, or complications of either, arising within the nine weeks before the expected date of delivery or within the nine weeks after except as specified under the Maternity benefit. 31. Your voluntary termination of pregnancy or resulting complications. 32. Your suicide or attempt thereat or self-inflicted injury. 33. Your commission or attempted commission of a criminal offence or illegal act based on the law where the cause of the claim occurred. 34. Non-emergency, experimental or elective treatment or procedures (including but not limited to ongoing care, chronic care, rehabilitation or check-ups) and their related complications, except as specified under the Rehabilitation Treatment benefit and the Other Professional Services benefit. 35. a) Cosmetic surgeries, procedures and/or treatments, and, b) Complications related to cosmetic surgeries. 36. Any medical condition or symptoms for which it is reasonable to believe or expect that treatments will be required during your trip. 37. Unless otherwise stated in this Policy (see General Condition, number 3), expenses incurred if other insurance policies, plans or contracts cover the loss. This includes but is not limited to any private or automobile insurance plan. If, however, the loss exceeds the limits of the other policies, plans or contracts and if this Insurance covers losses and periods not covered by those other policies, plans or contracts, this Insurance shall then apply in excess of all other valid insurance. This exclusion does not apply to Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance.

This Insurance provides no coverage and no insurer shall be liable to pay any claim or provide any benefit hereunder to the extent that the provision of such coverage, payment of such claim or provision of such benefit would expose that insurer to any sanctions, prohibition or restriction under United Nations resolutions or the trade or economic sanctions, laws or regulations of the European Union, United Kingdom or United States of America.

- Minimum 10 days, Maximum - 365 days (or 366 days for leap years).

- Dependent children -  Unmarried children who are dependent on a parent or guardian who is a student eligible under this Policy and are up to and including 21 years or, up to and including 40 years, if they have a cognitive, developmental or physical disability.

Reading your travel insurance policy before your departure will prevent you from making any assumptions about coverage or benefits, by knowing what you are and aren’t covered for. In this post, you’ll learn more about the various components of a travel insurance policy.

Understanding your travel insurance policy starts with learning more about the type of coverage you have. Before you buy, identify the types of travel insurance that’ll best meet your needs and confirm the coverage limits to know the exact amount of protection you have. At this point, it’s also a good idea to compare coverage from your credit card or group insurance plan and determine if you have the coverage you need.  

Not all travel insurance plans are created equally. Policies can be customized based on individual needs, health, age, and activity preferences. Coverage also differs from one travel insurance provider to another. So, when you buy, it’s important to not only compare the price, but also how the plan will protect you in case of any travel mishaps. 

Being well-informed about your policy and the reasons why your travel insurance claim could be denied can help you avoid costly surprises, both during and after your trip.

Tips to help you navigate your travel insurance policy 

To help you understand your travel insurance plan better, we’ve compiled a few guidelines to apply when reading your policy wording. Take the time to go through the policy; it can be overwhelming at first glance, but if you know what to look for, it can help you become more familiar with your coverage. Plus, if you need clarification, you can always pick up the phone and check in with your insurance professional or travel insurance provider’s customer service team.

Important contact information  

If your travel insurance provider offers emergency medical assistance , keep a record of the contact numbers (along with the international access codes for your destination) listed in the policy document. In case of a travel medical emergency abroad, knowing how to contact your travel insurance company will help you notify them as soon as possible and get the right care and information during your time of need.

Period of coverage

Depending on the travel insurance coverage you choose, the period of coverage helps you clarify when your coverage kicks in, and when it expires.  

For example, your Multi Trip Annual Travel Within Canada plan might cover you for a maximum of 35 consecutive days per trip, with coverage starting on the date of each departure from your home province and ending each time you return back to your home province or on the expiry date of the policy (whichever occurs first).  

Coverage Benefits

To learn more about the benefits of your Emergency Medical policy , evaluate the eligible medical and related expenses that the company will cover and how you’ll be reimbursed. Here are 2 key things to note: 

  • Orient yourself with key definitions , such as what is a medical emergency and what isn’t ? What is the meaning of a medical treatment? How does the company define a pre-existing medical condition?  
  • Benefit limits outline the maximum amount that you’ll be reimbursed. Confirm these limits for different emergency medical benefits such as hospital allowance, fracture treatment, dental services, childcare, return of pets & return of vehicle.

Covered Risks

In case your travel plans get delayed, cancelled, or interrupted, Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance helps you get reimbursed for prepaid, non-refundable unused travel expenses if you have to cancel or interrupt all or part of your trip.  

Covered risks in your policy identify the valid reasons for cancelling or interrupting your trip that the insurance company will provide coverage for. For example, some of the reasons covered by TuGo are: 

  • Medical reasons – i.e., a medical condition, death or quarantine of you, your travelling companion, or a family member. 
  • When an official travel advisory has been issued by the Canadian government for the scheduled travel dates after the date the trip is booked or the insurance is purchased. The travel advisory must be in effect on the scheduled departure date or within the 7 days before. 
  • The cancellation of a common carrier (e.g., your flight) for any reason other than bankruptcy, insolvency, or quarantine.  
  • Natural disasters or unforeseeable events which render your or your travelling companion’s principle residence uninhabitable or place of business inoperative. 
  • Subpoenaed for Jury duty or court appearance during your period of travel. 
  • The non-issuance of you or your travel companion’s travel or student visa for reasons beyond your control. 
  • Loss of Permanent employment provided you had been employed for more than one year. 
  • A job transfer which results in the relocation of you or your travelling companion’s principal residence. 
  • The cancellation of business meeting at your final destination. 

As you finalize your trip, learn more about your destination to better understand the kind of coverage you’ll need. Based on your research, you’ll be able to confirm if your policy will reimburse you in case you need to change your travel plans last minute, due to events beyond your control.  

Exclusions & Conditions

Most travellers are under the impression that once they buy travel insurance, they’ll be covered no matter what. Like any type of insurance, there are some events and conditions that may simply not be covered by travel insurance.  

Before you travel, arm yourself with knowledge on these general exclusions or conditions applicable to all plans that could impact your coverage: 

  • A medical condition that is the result of you not following treatment as prescribed to you by your doctor, including prescribed or over the counter medication. 
  • The consumption or use of illegal or controlled drugs  
  • Participating in an activity or sport not covered by your policy   
  • Your commission or attempted commission of a criminal offence or illegal act based on the law where the cause of the claim occurred. 

Pre-existing Medical Conditions

Depending on the plan you purchase, your policy may/may not provide coverage for medical conditions and/or symptoms that existed before your trip. Check your policy to see how it defines “pre-existing medical condition” and “stable/stability” . You’ll also want to review how unstable pre-existing medical conditions can impact claims .

Adventure Sports & High-risk Activities

Among all the areas covered by travel insurance, this is one of the areas where providers can differ the most. Before you plan any adventurous sports or activities, make sure they’re covered by your policy. Look for plans where your intended activity is specifically mentioned and whether it’ll cover you if you’re participating as a professional athlete or a coach. Study the policy’s exclusion list carefully to ensure that you’re better prepared when participating in these activities.
