Take a dog sledding adventure

031016-Dogsled_big

As soon as I exited my car at the Resort at Squaw Creek I could hear them. The anxious pleas of sled dogs, chomping at the bit to get running and pull sleds around the Squaw Creek meadow. Every winter day when the snow conditions are right, Wilderness Adventures Dog Sled Tours takes their 52 highly trained sled dogs from their kennel near Truckee to the Resort at Squaw Creek. Using four or five sleds, they can conduct up to 20 tours a day.

“These Alaskan Huskies are feisty, energized marathon runners with small, thin bodies designed to run and run at a steady speed for hours at a time.”

I recently hopped aboard one of those sleds under the capable hands of musher Matt Byers. The view across the valley to the mountains of Squaw Valley is spectacular, and the motion of the sled sliding smoothly on the snow, was relaxing and fun. The highlight of the journey, however, even for someone like me who is not really a dog person, is watching the behavior of the pack of dogs. These Alaskan Huskies are feisty, energized marathon runners with small, thin bodies designed to run and run at a steady speed for hours at a time. They are the same breed that takes on the nearly 1,000-mile Iditarod sled dog race in Alaska, when they spend days on end running in the below-zero temperatures.

031016-Dogsled_dogs

Whether waiting for the next tour or loping around the course, the dogs are always fascinating to watch. Minor dog revolts frequently erupt when one of the 10 dogs on the line decides they want to go in a different direction than the lead dog, and they often emit quick barks and nip at each other as they run. As we slid along, Byers talked about the different personalities of the dogs. Some dogs are all business, while some are taking it easy and making the others take up the slack. But whatever their personalities, they are working dogs. When one of the mushers let his goofy lab Sadie come see the customers, it was quickly apparent that the working Huskies looked at Sadie as a tourist on permanent vacation, and Sadie was smart enough to keep her distance.

Wilderness Adventures owners Brian and Deanne Mass ran their first dog sled tour in 1999 at Sugar Bowl. Brian got into dog sledding after doing a lot of winter camping with a couple of pet huskies. He acquired a few harnesses and a small sled and started having the dogs “pull me on the flat stuff on my snowboard,” he says. He learned from his mistakes, read everything he could get his hands on about sled dogs, and went from four dogs to six dogs and then decided to take the big leap to opening it as a business.

031016-DogSled_running

Running a dog sled tour business is certainly not just a job; it has to be a passion to deal with the long and challenging hours required. You need enough snow to run the dogs, but not so much that you can’t run them. The last two winters they were not able to operate due to a lack of snow. But Byers remembers the winter of 2011, when most of the time there was too much snow to run the dogs. Instead, they spent day after day shoveling out the dogs’ pens.

Even on a normal winter day, the daily routine of a dog sled company is a 12-plus hour operation. Each musher takes care of his own team. It begins in the morning with cleaning up after the dogs, dishing out snacks and loading the dogs into the trucks. After a day at work pulling sleds, the dogs return home and are given a health check, with special attention paid to the feet. Then, they eat the big meal of the day, and lay down on a bed of straw in their individual homes.

For the Maas family it has become a family affair. Fourteen-year-old Elias now runs a sled, working every day as an important part of the operation, and 18-year-old Ravyn also helps out.

In general, the sled dog tours run seven days a week between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. But dates and times vary due to snow conditions. The maximum weight per sled is 500 lbs., which in most cases would allow a couple and perhaps one child to fit in a sled.

Wilderness Adventures Dog Sled Tours invites everyone to experience the thrill and excitement of touring in complete safety behind a team of eager Huskies. Tours are available at the Resort at Squaw Creek: 400 Squaw Creek Road. Visit http://www.tahoedogsledtours.com to learn more.

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. — Picture your dog’s excitement when you grab the leash, or say the “w-a-l-k” word. They’re stoked, they always want to go; yes it’s a great day for a walk, why are we still in the kitchen?

Now picture almost 30 dogs yipping, jumping, howling and barking at once — that’s the energy running through Wilderness Adventures Dog Sled Tours’ pack of beautiful Alaskan huskies before every single tour.

Brian Maas owns the company, running the business with his family.

“I love it,” he said after a sledding excursion on Wednesday. “I fell in love with the dogs when I had a couple as pets, and it’s grown just being such a peaceful activity getting to be outdoors with these dogs who are amazing athletes.”

Maas is an animal lover who used to play around with his two pet huskies, having them pull him on a snowboard. He wanted to be able to go farther distances and bring more things with him, so he got four more dogs, invested in a sled and was hooked.

The rest, as they say, is history. Now he, his wife and two kids care for the dogs as their pets (that also have jobs). They are able to make the amazing scenic tour opportunities available to anyone as a safe, fun alternative to skiing when you still want to be outside.

“They live to eat and run. They love this,” said Matt Byers, a musher for the Olympic Valley-based company who loves working with animals and being outside.

He also operates Alpine Meadows Stables — which will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year — during the summer.

Dog sledding is crazy! These animals are incredible and the view isn’t half bad either ❄️? @sierrasunnews #tahoe #snow #dogsledding #northlaketahoe A post shared by Cassandra Walker (@snow1cass) on Mar 9, 2017 at 4:01pm PST

‘THE HAPPIEST DOGS IN THE WORLD’

“We’d be out here five days a week if we could. This is their treat,” he said about the dogs. “They get so excited to be out here working — the happiest dogs in the world doing what they love.”

Training all depends on the dog, as they’re of a very independent working breed.

“They want to work,” Byers said. “Just like pet dogs want to please their owners, these dogs want to work. I’m an animal lover and I love seeing them have a job to do.”

Byers said a lot of people get these types of high-performance dogs for their looks and ultimately realize how much effort it takes to properly care for them.

“You have to be a responsible owner to take care of these dogs,” he said.

Maas certainly is a responsible owner, as he allows the dogs the freedom to be in their natural element — and he even adds salmon oil to their water.

“We are all so passionate about this,” Maas said. “We always make sure the dogs are happy and healthy or they just won’t do it. It’s a respectful working relationship between me and the guides and the dogs.”

Throughout the tour, guests get to enjoy the gorgeous scenery with plenty of photo-stops along the way. Gliding through Olympic Valley’s meadow near the famed Squaw Valley ski resort is surprisingly quiet, with the dog sled team riding along a path previously tracked out by the guides’ snowmobiles to help things go along smoothly.

The dogs are strategically positioned (some of them are buddies and play too much while on the mission). During our tour this week, three sisters were staged in a line led by “Necklace” and “Rascal.”

The dogs’ tails were wagging as they all intermittently dipped down to chomp a bite of snow.

“Necklace is the pack’s tour leader,” Byers said. “She is an amazing dog; at 6 years old, she keeps everyone in line.”

Throughout the tour, Necklace listened to commands flawlessly. You can tell she takes her job seriously as she trotted, head-down, leading the troop on a safe and steady ride.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO LEAD A TOUR?

Wilderness Adventures can do four to five tours a day, depending on weather. If it’s too hot outside or the snow is too soft, the dogs will take the day off.

Twelve of the company’s Alaskan huskies can handle up to 2,000 pounds, and the guides pace the dogs at a steady 6-8 miles per hour, which is a comfortable speed for the dogs to travel up to six hours.

Fun fact: Guides are called “mushers,” but they only say “mush!” in the movies.

Byers yells “all right,” and the dogs know it’s time to get a move-on.

Byers walked the line of dogs, petting each of them and explaining the sled’s mechanics. Each dog wears a net-like harness with crisscross straps down the length of their backs.

Attached to each dog’s harness are two clips that run to the team’s main gangline, allowing two dogs to run side-by-side. The clip at the front of the harness is the neckline, and the clip in the back is the tugline. Each helps stage the dogs in the right spacing and placement, with the neckline able to be undone in case the dogs need to hop over obstacles on-trail.

At the end of the gangline is a bridle, shock-absorption bungee that on its own is incredibly difficult to move. Once the dogs get running however, the bungee cord stretches with ease.

Behind the bungee, the gangline attaches to the sled, which Wilderness Adventures’ experts custom-make and rebuild throughout the season. It’s a comfortable, smooth ride with a plush cushion underneath you that easily seats two people: one in front, legs stretched out and the other seated behind, slinging their legs on either side.

The musher stands on the back of the sled, helping to steer the dogs and make challenging areas of the trail more manageable for the pups.

All in all, this was a wonderful, safe adventure that would be exciting for visitors and locals alike. Anyone is welcome to join in on the fun — the team has hosted everyone from parents with an infant to elderly and physically disabled guests — and it is a sight to behold for any outdoor enthusiast.

10 activities for non-skiers at Lake Tahoe-Truckee

wilderness adventures dog sled tours tahoe

Just because you don’t like to “shred gnarly pow-pow” doesn’t mean Tahoe isn’t the winter destination for you.

While it may be tempting to sit at the bar in the lodge and get sloshed while your more snow-inclined friends hit the slopes, don’t be that person.

Instead, try one (or all) of these 10 activities that will get you out appreciating all that this area has to offer.

1. SNOWSHOEING

From easy in-town trails to backcountry excursions, choose your own adventure when you strap on a pair of snowshoes in the Tahoe Basin. Rabe Meadows in Stateline is a great option if you’re new to the activity, but Fallen Leaf Lake in South Lake Tahoe is the ultimate spot to snowshoe thanks to its gorgeous views of Mount Tallac.

2. HELICOPTER TOUR

Have you ever ridden a sled pulled by a team of huskies flying over the snow ? That’s what we did in Tahoe , yes you read it right not Alaska, not Iceland or Finland – Dog Sledding in Lake Tahoe!

Dog Sledding in Tahoe

WHAT IS IN THIS POST

Dog Sledding in Tahoe

A sled dog musher and a team of dogs took us for an exciting winter adventure. The ride was for about 2 hours. Since we were low to the ground, we wore the extra layers we brought along for the ski trip. And then covered ourselves with more blankets. It was a fun experience being pulled on the sled by the huskies along the spectacular Sierra Nevada mountains. The kids got to pet one of the husky puppies and wanted to bring him home.

Dog Sledding & Skiing in Tahoe

Our first time Skiing in Tahoe

We tried skiing for the very time in Tahoe. Although I must mention the kids did much better than we did, we pretty much stayed on the bunny slopes. Getting out of those ski lifts gracefully was half the battle! Of all the Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts, I think Boreal Ridge Ski has something special going on. The family-friendly Boreal Ridge Ski Area is one of the smallest resorts at Lake Tahoe, but it’s still special. Boreal is relaxing, comfortable, and has friendly and helpful staff. Apart from a friendly staff, Boreal has a 600-foot super park and great food. We spent more time in the tube park, having snowball fights, making snow angels and riding snowmobiles!

Dog Sledding

Dog Sledding can be found in Truckee and Lake Tahoe !! No need to go all the way to Alaska to find this sport! I've never been, but it is one of the Truckee Winter Activities on my bucket list to do as soon as I can.

Dog Sledding in Olympic Valley at the Resort at Squaw Creek

Truckee is a very dog friendly town, and Husky's are terrific Truckee Dogs ! One of my two dogs that I got in Truckee was 1/2 Husky and 1/2 Golden Retriever. Husky's have always been one of my favorite types of dogs.

In researching this page, I found several companies that give dog sled tours, but I think that I would chose to go with Wilderness Adventure Dog Sled Tours that operate out of the Resort at Squaw Creek in Olympic Valley , CA. Brian Maas and his crew sound great, and the Squaw Valley area is one of my favorite places near Truckee.

They are open 7 days a week during winter and spring (weather permitting), and the tours last about an hour and go about five miles.

The video below explains a little bit about them (the video quality is not the greatest in parts of the video): Dog Sledding at Squaw Valley Video - Tours available everyday with Wilderness Adventures.

Be sure and bring a camera if you go on a tour and dress warm! Sleds from Wilderness Adventures Dog Sled Tours accommodate 2 adults and 2 children with a maximum weight of 500 lbs. per sled. They have six sleds available upon request, so if you have a larger family or want to go with a group of friends or family, you can go together as a group.

On week days, they even give you an opportunity to learn to mush your own sled with longer tours that last 2 - 2.5 hours and cover 15 - 20 miles of gorgeous scenery. This sounds like super fun!!
