Women in Travel Retail embraces a ‘plus’ as it becomes more inclusive

By DFNI Staff Writer in Global , Latest News , People & Planet , People News May 5, 2023 Comments Off on Women in Travel Retail embraces a ‘plus’ as it becomes more inclusive

The change signals a more inclusive approach and allows for non-member guests of other genders to join some of WiTR+ meetings and events,

woman in travel retail

The Steering Committee for Women in Travel Retail (WiTR) has decided during a recent meeting to recognise the contribution made to the association by all industry colleagues and add a + to its name.

Whilst membership will still be specifically for women, the change signals a more inclusive approach and allows for non-member guests of other genders to join some of WiTR+  meetings and events, such as those held at key trade events throughout the year, such as ASUTIL, IAADFS, MEADFA, TFWA Asia Pacific and TFWA World Exhibition.

The WiTR+ webinar programme will also be broadened to include male speakers.

“Whilst still very much a group which assists women to network and thrive in the world of duty-free and travel retail, WiTR has been and will continue, now as WiTR+, to be deeply grateful for the support that our male colleagues in the industry have given, particularly in raising funds for the various charities we’ve supported over the years. In fact, we could not have done what we’ve done without them,” said WiTR+ Chair Sarah Branquinho . “We all felt it was time that we opened our doors to become more inclusive – at least two or three times a year!”

The Committee is also launching corporate membership for companies operating within the duty-free and travel retail channel. This will allow companies to extend their diversity and inclusion programmes by enrolling as members their female GTR staff members.  Details of this new scheme will be announced shortly, but any interested companies should contact any member of the WiTR Steering Committee.

Announcing the 2022 Top Women in Retail

Women in Retail Leadership Circle is so excited to present its 12th annual report featuring top women leaders in the retail industry.

I cannot wait for you to get to know the incredible women spotlighted in this report. The stories, insights  and advice provided by the 2022 Top Women in Retail and Women on the Rise honorees speak to why they received this honor. These leaders — nominated by their peers, industry insiders, Women in Retail Leadership Circle members and retail partners — share with both confidence and humility. They analyze their past as well as offer details into their future plans, all while absolutely owning their current roles. And what a wild present it is to be in, especially in this industry.

Then there’s the Women on the Rise — wonderful up-and-coming retail stars who are shaping the industry with their love of the field and their acute observances.

The women featured in this report represent many sectors of the retail industry, including beauty, jewelry, health, food, apparel, and more. Despite their varied work environments, you’ll come to recognize that they have a lot in common. My favorite noticeable trait? Persistent optimism. The challenges presented by nearly two years of COVID restrictions haven’t daunted these leaders. They’re still planning and identifying ways to better serve their customers, executing upon these strategies, and keeping their teams motivated in the process.

The best part is they’re also sharing  how  they manage these feats. Read about the risks they took in their journeys to become leaders; the ways they’re motivating and inspiring their teams; how they’re advocating for diversity, equity and inclusion within their organizations as well as across the industry; what they’re doing to attract and retain more female talent to their organizations; and much more.

Download this valuable and inspirational resource, and let us know which stories resonated with you.

Phoenix police arrest 3 women in $500K retail theft case

woman in travel retail

Phoenix police and the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on Thursday announced the arrests of three women for over $500,000 in retail theft.

Alejandra Torres, 48, Jennifer Zazueta-Reyes, 22, and Guadalupe Gamez-Moreno, 35, face several charges for selling and, in some cases, orchestrating the theft of thousands of cosmetics across several stores, including Target, Sephora and Ulta, police detectives said.

Police said Torres and her daughter, Zazueta-Reyes, started selling cosmetics online in 2019 and the group allegedly made most of their money from bulk online sales.

Guadalupe Gamez-Moreno claimed she did not know the goods were stolen in a police interview, according to court records.

Police said that Torres had not been employed at the time of her arrest. They claimed in court records that bank statements showed Torres had yielded more than $1 million in incoming funds and credits to her bank accounts since January 2018.

Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell called organized retail theft a massive problem.

“Just riding over here, I was hearing of another case involving about $300,000 worth of theft,” she said.

She explained that she organized a special task force in 2022 to address the problem.

Organized retail theft cases made up about 1.2% of cases submitted to the office in 2023.

The county attorney’s office explained that organized retail theft crimes submitted to them had gone up from 504 in 2022 to 591 in 2023.

Crime: Arizona universities saw increases in crime reporting in 2022. Here's why

Phoenix Interim Chief Michael Sullivan said: “We see what feels like, anecdotally, you know, more of this going on. And if you look, it's not just here in the Phoenix area, but it's around the country.”

Nationally, retail crime has been difficult to gauge because organized retail theft is categorized differently in each jurisdiction, and the FBI does not segment it in its national crime database.

Mitchell said that she would like the ability to pursue more severe punishment for organized retail theft crimes. She noted a bill under consideration by Gov. Katie Hobbs after being passed by the Arizona Legislature that would increase sentencing ranges on those convicted for multiple violations of organized retail theft by treating them as repeat offenders.

In  a 2016 report , the National Institute of Justice explained that while increasing the certainty of being caught for a crime made a powerful deterrent against crime, increasing the severity did little to deter crime.

In Arizona, first-time class 2 felony convictions usually carry up to 12.5 years in prison, and first-time class 3 felony convictions can go up to 8.75 years.

Torres faces four class 2 felony counts of trafficking stolen property and one class 3 felony count of illegal control of an enterprise.

Gamez-Moreno faces one class 2 felony count of trafficking stolen property and one class 3 felony count of illegal control of an enterprise.

Zazueta-Reyes faces one class 3 felony count of illegal control of an enterprise.

Trials in their cases have been set for August and September of this year.

California Governor Newsom launches abortion travel ban ad campaign in Alabama

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:41 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

California Governor Gavin Newsom is taking aim at states considering abortion travel bans with the launch of a new ad campaign.

Newsom's Campaign for Democracy ad is set to air in Alabama starting Monday. The governor tweeted out the ad in a social media post Sunday morning.

Alabama’s abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women’s travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this. pic.twitter.com/gHbYJYlEXk — Gavin Newsom (@GavinNewsom) April 21, 2024

The text with the video post reads, "Alabama's abortion ban has no exceptions for rape or incest. Now, Republicans are trying to criminalize young women's travel to receive abortion care. We cannot let them get away with this."

The 30-second commercial shows two nervous young women driving in a car passing a sign that reads "State Line 1 Mile."

"We're almost there. You're gonna make it," the passenger tells the woman behind the wheel just before they hear a siren and are pulled over by a state trooper.

"Trump Republicans want to criminalize young Alabama women who travel for reproductive care," a voiceover says as the state trooper walks up to the car.

"Miss, I'm going to need you to step out of the vehicle and take a pregnancy test," the trooper says, waving a test stick in one hand. The next shot shows the driver leaning on the hood of her car as the trooper puts her in handcuffs.

"Stop them by taking action at RightToTravel.org ," the voiceover intones as the ad ends.

Alabama is currently weighing a bill that would make it a crime to help women travel outside the state in order to receive an abortion. The ad is part of a larger effort to combat travel bans across the United States. Newsom was behind a similar ad that ran in Tennessee.

The RightToTravel.org website says that those two states and Oklahoma are considering bills that ban minors from traveling out of state to get an abortion without parental consent, even if it's a case of incest or if there is abuse in the family.

It isn't the first action the governor has taken in the political battle over abortion since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June of 2022. Two days after the ruling, Newsom partnered with the governors of Oregon and Washington to issue a multi-state commitment promising to defend access to reproductive health care, including abortion and contraceptives.

In September of that year, he launched a billboard campaign in seven of the most restrictive anti-abortion states urging women seeking the procedure to come to California for treatment. He also signed more than a dozen new abortion laws  protecting women's reproductive rights and ordered the state to end its contract with Walgreens after the pharmacy giant  indicated it would not sell an abortion pill by mail in some conservative-led states .
