Skiing | Resi Stiegler back, among big names at World Pro Ski Tour event
The tour isn’t designed to compete with the world cup circuit. it’s simply another avenue for race competition..
She had a race — two, in fact — to prepare for.
The three-time U.S. Olympian will make a quasi-comeback at the World Pro Ski Tour’s championship races this weekend at Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico. With lucrative prize money on the line, the field is loaded with Olympians, World Cup standouts, national team members, college standouts and those who just so happen to be coming out of retirement (see: Stiegler).
“I was planning on winning, because that’s who I am,” Stiegler cracked of her expectations with qualifying set for Friday, a men’s and women’s parallel slalom race Saturday and a parallel giant slalom race Sunday. “But then I didn’t know they were coming.”
“They” would be a reference to Erin Mielzynski of Canada and American Paula Moltzan, who both competed at the Winter Games in Beijing.
The tour that has long attracted elite racers. With roots dating to the late 1960s, it once featured the likes of Billy Kidd and the Mahre brothers (Phil and Steve) before disbanding around 1999. The tour came back in 2017, but the world championships were put off the past two years because of the pandemic.
Up for grabs will be $20,000 for the men’s and women’s winners in both races. Plus, there’s a $25,000 bonus for the male and female racer who perform the best in both events combined.
The competition will be side-by-side racing along a super-slalom course that features pro-style jumps. One run each on the red and blue courses (for fairness), with the winner advancing through a March Madness-style bracket based on time differential.
On the men’s side, there are names such as Linus Strasser, who was part of Germany’s Olympic silver medal in the team parallel event in Beijing, and American River Radamus (fourth in the giant slalom in Beijing). There’s also Robert Cone, the 30-year-old from Vermont who’s dominated the circuit the last two seasons. In all, more than 50 men entered.
The field for the women is smaller — about two dozen — but just as stacked. Moltzan enters fresh off winning the slalom crown at the U.S. championships.
The tour isn’t designed to compete with the World Cup circuit. It’s simply another avenue for race competition.
“We’re the NASCAR to their Formula One — complementary tours,” explained WPST CEO Jon Franklin, whose partnership deals include Rocket Mortgage. “The action should be fast and furious.”
Expect the unexpected, too.
That was the case with Tuva Norbye, the 25-year-old racer who retired from the Norwegian team due to a back issue. On a whim, Norbye, a grad student at the University of Utah, decided to compete at a WPST event in January. On borrowed skis and gear, she won the event and the $10,000 to go with it.
A month later, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, she won again. Another $10,000.
For this event, she had her racing gear shipped from home and increased her training. The racers go through a time trial Friday to determine their seeding for the tournament, which will be a field of 16 for the women and 32 for the men.
“The competition level is really high, and here for the finals, it’s going to be the highest that it’s ever been,” Norbye said. “I’m excited for it. I’m actually getting a little nervous, too.”
A casual conversation with her husband, German slalom racer David Ketterer, enticed Stiegler back to the starting gate. He simply inquired: How fun would it be to race at an event together?
Extremely, Stiegler thought. And so here they are.
The excitement’s building for the 36-year-old Stiegler, whose long but injury-filled career included 178 World Cup entries — one podium — and more than a dozen surgeries. Stiegler retired last April following a slalom win at the national championships.
Stiegler, who lives in Wyoming and trains at Jackson Hole, skied up to the day of Rosi’s birth in early February. She also watched the Beijing Games, and her heart broke for good friend Nina O’Brien, who fell near the finish line in the women’s giant slalom and suffered a compound leg fracture.
Soon after the birth of Rosi, O’Brien wrote under Stiegler’s Instagram post: “I know a good babysitter who has plenty of time on her hands.”
Stiegler said she is excited to back racing.
“If it’s this really awesome thing that goes well, I can really have a fun year (on the World Pro Ski Tour) next year,” said Stiegler, who serves as a coach for her husband and helps oversee Stiegler Ski Racing Camps with her brother.
Any chance of a full-scale comeback?
“I’m retired,” Stiegler said with a laugh.

Women make their return to World Pro Ski Tour at Aspen Mountain; Cone back on top
Aspen’s galena wardle finished fourth in the women’s bracket.
News News | Jan 10, 2022
Austin Colbert
Like the rest of the women on Sunday, Aspen’s Galena Wardle had to learn the unique ins and outs of competing in a World Pro Ski Tour event. With its head-to-head racing, jumps in the middle of a slalom course and quirky two-run format, it has a different flow than a World Cup race.
“It’s really awesome. It’s not something we are used to,” Wardle said. “It’s a lot of runs, too, which is a different aspect that is pretty cool. But it was really exciting to be a part of the first women’s one and of course being in Aspen was really cool.”
Wardle, a former member of the U.S. ski team, was among a group of largely collegiate skiers to compete in the Rocket Mortgage Women’s Tour on Sunday, the second and final day of the WPST stop on Aspen Mountain . While the tour has always allowed women to compete with the men in the open division since it returned from a nearly two-decade hiatus in 2017, Sunday’s tournament in Aspen marked the first time the tour had put together a bracket exclusively for women since the 1990s.
Taking the win was Norway’s Tuva Norbye, a former University of Denver skier, who held off the University of Vermont’s Caroline Jones in the final. Jones grew up attending the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy.
Wardle finished fourth, losing the small final to University of Colorado ski racer Kaitlyn Harsch, another Vail product. A day prior, another Aspen skier, 2018 Olympian Wiley Maple, had made his WPST debut as well, advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday . He lost in the round of 16 on Sunday.

“I didn’t fully know what to expect, but each run you kind of figure it out a little more,” Wardle said. “I took a pretty big fall in the middle there. It shook me up a little bit. Definitely wish I could have skied a little better after that, but it was a good day overall.”
Wardle, 23, currently attends DU as a ski racer and continues to compete in FIS and NorAm events, with the goal of one day making the World Cup always there as motivation. Injuries derailed her promising career with the U.S. ski team .
Healthy again, Wardle is looking forward to getting the collegiate season started here soon and sees the inclusion of a women’s tournament on the WPST as nothing but a bonus for the female athletes.
“It’s awesome they are opening it up to women,” she said, “and I think with each one you will see more people come out and more competitors, and hopefully it just builds up from there.”
Taking the Reven Cup, or the de facto men’s race, on Sunday was Vermont’s Rob Cone, the two-time defending WPST season champion. It was his first win in four races so far this winter and has him atop the standings in defense of his title. Austria’s Simon Breitfuss Kammerlander, who won Saturday’s race in Aspen before finishing fourth on Sunday, is currently second in the season standings. Kammerlander will represent Bolivia next month at the Winter Olympics.
Cone beat Norway’s Joachim Lindstol in Sunday’s final, while Minnesota’s Michael Ankeny finished third, beating Kammerlander in the third-place match.
Both the men’s and women’s winner went home with the same $10,000 check.

While the races this past weekend were the first for the WPST in Aspen proper since its rebirth, tour CEO Jon J. Franklin said he hopes to see it become a regular stop going forward.
“We are excited to race here and excited to come back in the future,” Franklin said. “We had the women for the first time in 25 years as part of the pro tour, and we had last year’s champion win a race and we had a new winner on the podium, Simon, who’s been on this tour for three years and was always a bridesmaid, never a bride. So, it was super exciting. We had so many great elements this weekend and that’s one of the best things about coming back to Aspen, is all the excitement and a great crowd.”
The World Pro Ski Tour has two more stops scheduled for this season, next being a trip to Steamboat Springs from Feb. 13 to 15. The season finale will be held at Taos Ski Valley in New Mexico, although dates have not yet been announced for those races.

“We are so excited to launch into this season with more races at the best ski racing venues in the country,” said Jon Franklin, CEO of the World Pro Ski Tour. “We begin at Aspen Mountain, which has incredible skiing heritage as part of the original Pro Tour with Jean Claude Killy, Spider Sabich, and Billy Kidd racing down the Little Nell run, right where we’ll be; then we head to Granby Ranch, Steamboat’s Howelsen Hill, and we will finish the season at Taos Ski Valley for World Championships.”
2021-22 Schedule

December 17-19, 2021 Granby Ranch, Colorado

Dates TBA World Championships – Taos Ski Valley, New Mexico
Each stop on the WPST will host two or three separate races, where athletes will meet on the hill for a dual super slalom, single-elimination, bracket-style competition akin to drag-racing on snow. On the women’s side, expected to compete are two-time Olympians, Alice McKennis and Laurenne Ross, U.S Ski Team alum and NCAA Giant Slalom champion, Lindsey Cone, and Canadian Olympian, Anna Goodman. The men’s tour features professional ski racers including two-time Olympic gold medalist, Ted Ligety, reigning National Parallel Champion, Garret Driller and the ever-dominant, two-time WPST Overall Champion, Rob Cone.

unwto tourism highlights 2022
Un tourism | bringing the world closer.
Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.
2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.
Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.
January - March
As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .
April - June
Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.
July - September
As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.
October - December
The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.
Growing and Moving Forward
UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.
Leaving Nobody Behind
The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.
A Shared Vision
Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022
UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022
Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :
- The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
- International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
- Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
- The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
- The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022
11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022
The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.
2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.
It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.
– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.
– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.
