Olympics.com will provide  live updates throughout the day from the Thai capital, which you can re-live below.

All times below are Thailand Standard Time (UTC/GMT +7 hours). Most recent updates at the top.

Badminton | HSBC BWF World Tour Finals | Bangkok

20:42 - Aaron Chia/Soh Wooi Yik crash out

In the day's final affair, the men's doubles world champions from Malaysia suffered their second loss in as many days, 23-21, 22-24-22, 21-16 at the hands of Liu Yu Chen/Ou Xuan Yi .

And with that, Chia/Soh have been eliminated from these Tour Finals with one match to spare.

Viktor Axelsen was in total control against Naraoka Kodai.

19:57 - He Bing Jao in last four

In women's singles Group B, the Chinese won her second in a row with a 21-17, 24-22 effort against local favourite Ratchanok Intanon after saving two game points in the second set.

The result won He a seat in the semi-finals ahead of her final round-robin match tomorrow against another Thai, Busanan Ongbamrungphan .

19:45 - Axelsen on reaching semi-finals

"I’m really, really happy about my performance against Kodai today. He’s shown that he’s a talented player this past year, real up-and-coming.

"I went into the match with a serious mindset because I knew that if I won in straight games, I would be seeded into the semi-finals. It was important for me to play at a high intensity, at a high pace and I believe I managed to do so.

"I don’t feel tired at all. I haven’t used much energy with all due respect. I feel absolutely fine, no injures which is the most important thing knock on wood. It’s great to be on the court again performing well".

19:17 - Viktor Axelsen overpowers Naraoka Kodai

The Dane was just too much even for the Tour's Most Promising Player award winner, defeating the Japanese 21-5, 21-15 in slightly more than half an hour to book a seat in the semi-finals.

Axelsen barely broke a sweat in winning the first game. In the second, Naraoka did well to save five match points but succumbed in the end as expected.

The defending champion will face Prannoy H. S. on Friday to close out the group phase.

18:11 - Zheng/Huang make quick work of Rivaldy/Mentari

The pair of the year defeated the Indonesian duo in 33 minutes (21-9, 22-20) for their second victory in Group A, all but punching their ticket to the semi-finals.

Loh Kean Yew missed out on an opportunity to sew his place in the last four.

17:25 - Jonatan Christie on cliff-hanger win vs Loh Kean Yew

The Indonesian saved two match points in the second game to defeat the 2021 world champion 16-21, 22-20, 21-10, a result which has left everything to play for in Group B.

Tomorrow, Christie faces Chou who must win to have any shot of reaching the semi-final. Loh is up against Ginting, who already has two wins but cannot exhale just yet as if he loses and Christie wins, it will come down to tiebreaks.

"First of all, I want to say thank you God because I’m still alive, I’m still in this competition", Christie said. "I have to still fight tomorrow.

"Chou has already lost two matches but he will do his best. I want go to the semi-final, too. I think I still have 90 per cent in the tank. I must recover today and hopefully tomorrow I get a full tank".

Christie is now a perfect 6-0 against Loh for his career but denied he has any kind of mental stranglehold on the Singaporean.

"Loh played very, very well. I saw him against Chou yesterday and it’s very, very unbelievable", he said. "He has speed, power and defense also. He’s perfect.

"Every time I play against him it’s a very, very tough match. Last time I played him was Badminton Asia in Manila. The situation is a little bit the same; it’s hot, very windy and the shuttle is very fast. It’s not easy to play with him".

14:57 - Ginting after 2nd win

"I think we have the same problem on the court because of the drift. I am really happy with my performance today. I came back from the pressure in the second set; I couldn’t do many things in the second set, didn’t play well.

"I will try my best again tomorrow and enjoy every single game. Let’s see how it goes tomorrow".

13:57 - A S Ginting takes down CTC

The Indonesian just got the better of the steely veteran from Chinese Taipei, coming out ahead 21-14, 12-21, 21-19 from a tense affair in which neither side gave an inch.

It all came down to the third game. After trading point after point, Ginting went up 17-16 and from there never relinquished the lead.

The defeat, his second of Group B, put a huge dent in Chou's semi-final chances. He faces Jonatan Christie on Friday.

13:22 - Chen: "I just wanted to fight"

"Today I just wanted to fight. Just try to control and change my mindset.

"I’ll do my very best tomorrow, try to keep my emotions in check. Control the mood to control the field of play as well as I can".

Chen faces An in Friday's last round-robin match.

12:57 - It's Chen over Yamaguchi

In a rematch of this summer's world championships final, Chen got payback against Yamaguchi 21-19, 21-18.

Yamaguchi was up by six in the second game but Chen would not go away, levelling the score at 17 apiece before taking four of the next five points.

It was only Chen's ninth win over Yamaguchi in 24 career meetings and her first since the semi-finals of the Tour Finals.

12:20 - An Se Young grinds one out

The 20-year-old from the Republic of Korea is made to work by Tunjung, who stunned Chen Yu Fei on Day 1, needing three games to prevail 21-9, 11-21, 21-10.

An rebounded from defeat to Yamaguchi Akane yesterday.

12:01 - Chen/Jia cruise

After needing almost an hour to get past compatriots Zhang Shu Xian / Zheng Yu yesterday, the world champions were in control from stat to finish (21-13, 21-15) versus their Malaysian opponents who they remain unbeaten against in three meetings.

11:17 - Bringing to you live from Bangkok

We are up and running on Day 2 of the BWF World Tour Finlas at Nimibutr Arena, where An Se Young and Gregoria Mariska Tunjung are swinging away in the women's singles with Chen Qing Chen / Jia Yi Fan taking on Tan Pearly / Thinaah Muralitharan in the women's doubles.

Want to catch up on Day 1? It's all  here .

Snooker could do with a Luke Littler to kick-start a new class of 92 but the likes of Mark Williams and Robert Milkins can't see it happening. This is very honest and pretty worrying. World Championship history

The World Championship is snooker's most prestigious tournaments in the calendar and also the leading event to bet on among the sport's punters.

Taking place at Sheffield's world famous Crucible Theatre around April and May every year, except in 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic forced its delay until August, the World Championship provides the climax to every snooker season and is the title all players dream of winning throughout their careers.

It is also the cornerstone of snooker's Triple Crown, which also includes the UK Championship and the Masters, and any player winning all three tournaments during their careers becomes an undisputed legend of the sport.

The World Championship, which was first held way back in 1927 when the legendary Joe Davis won the first of his record 15 crowns, has seen a number of repeat winners over the years such as Ray Reardon, Steve Davis, Stephen Hendry and Ronnie O'Sullivan who have all helped snooker punters beat the bookies on many occasions.

However, the heavily backed crowd favourite Jimmy White was a beaten finalist on no fewer than six occasions - including five in a row between 1990 and 1994 - much to the bookies' relief!

While 'Rocket' Ronnie O'Sullivan's seven world titles and three much-celebrated 147 Crucible breaks have brought much cheer to snooker fans in more recent times, the highly unexpected triumph of journeyman pro Stuart Bingham in 2014 was a real fairytale story that ranks closely behind the shock underdog victories that Dennis Taylor, in the 'Black Ball final of 1985', and Joe Johnson enjoyed over Steve Davis in the 1980s.

Mark Williams rolling back the years to win his third world title in 2018 also brought the house down, especially when deciding to fulfil his promise to strip naked for the post-match interviews!

A year later and there was less drama, as Judd Trump produced one of the most impressive displays in memory to thrash John Higgins , before O'Sullivan clinched a sixth title in 2020's summer renewal .

Then, in 2021, Mark Selby recovered from a heartbreaking semi-final defeat to O'Sullivan the previous year to win his fourth world title , moving alongside Higgins on the all-time list.

O'Sullivan went on to win his seventh World Championship in 2022 , beating Trump 18-13 in the final, while Luca Brecel overcame maximum man Mark Selby 12 months later.

Ronnie O'Sullivan (Eng, 2) v Ryan Day (Wal)

Afternoon session

Mark Allen (NI, 4) 4-4 John Higgins (Sco, 13)

Stuart Bingham (Eng) 5-3 Jack Lisowski (Eng)

Evening session

O'Connor 2-6 Wilson

After a frame of safety shots galore, O'Connor takes frame eight.

He establishes a four frame lead over his opponent, with play resuming tomorrow.

Breaks of 50, 105, 71 and 78 have secured some of those frames.

Back to table 2

Wilson leads 5-2 against O'Connor.

And he's closing in on frame eight, if only he will get through some pesky snookers.

Because that's what O'Connor is looking for, and it's all gone a bit cat and mouse on the green.

Bingham 5-3 Lisowski

The standard between Lisowski and Bingham has been incredibly high.

World no17 Lisowski raced ahead with breaks of 82 and 88,

Then, world no29 won five frames in a row - with breaks of 90 and 89 in there.

Lisowski wasn't done though. He fought back to win the last frame before the end of the session with a break of 51.

Play resumes tomorrow.

I feel relieved. It was an absolutely shocking match. Today was a little bit better but I don't know how I won. I don't think either of us were clinical, someone just had to win. "I won four black-ball games in the first session to be 6-2 up and even when the wall [screen] went up I didn't feel comfortable. You always want to play well if I'm winning when I'm not playing well there's a positive in that. "Judd and Ronnie are two of the best players in the world so it does not get any tougher than that. Everyone is expecting a Ronnie-Judd semi-final so I've got nothing to lose and I will just try my best and see what happens. "My goal is to get in the top 16 but it's very difficult. You're ranked where you should be. My consistency is not there."

Bingham 3-2 Lisowski

Bingham edges ahead.

While there has been some great moments for both players, it's also been a tad inconsistent.

An exhibition shot by Bingham at the end on the pink off three cushions fails to sink in the pocket.

But that's all academic.

Wilson 3-1 O'Connor

Kyren Wilson has made a solid start to this one.

The third frame brings the first century of the match - with Wilson scoring 105.

Wilson then won his third frame.

On the other table

Wilson has edged ahead of O'Connor

He leads by two frames to one now on table two.

Bingham 2-2 Lisowski

Lisowski somehow sees a pot squirm out of the pocket.

Bingham takes to the table to score 20, before having to play for safety.

Lisowski fails to slot a long red home, giving Bingham the opportunity to stake his claim for the frame.

Both men return to the table, with Jack losing a bit of his swagger and hitting a few loose ones.

Bingham, back at the table, then starts getting his score up again, and by the time a routine black is done he is in control.

At the interval, we are level.

Bingham 1-2 Lisowski

Bingham has stemmed the tide.

He has taken frame three, although it was only through Lisowski missing a routine red on 46.

Bingham replied with a stunning 90 to seal the frame. That's impressive stuff.

O'Connor and Wilson is underway.

It's the 2020 finalist Kyren Wilson who has taken the first frame.

He will have his eyes on the prize tonight.

Bingham 0-2 Lisowski

Well, Lisowski has flown out of the traps here.

A brilliant opening frame sees the world No17 record a break of 83.

He follows that up with 88 in the second frame.

Within the blink of an eye, Lisowski is two frames up.

Bingham v Lisowski

It is the eighth time that Stuart Bingham and Jack Lisowski have gone head-to-head,

Currently, Lisowski is a head 4-3.

Will Bingham make that 4-4?

This evening's matches

There are two matches to enjoy this evening.

Jack Lisowski will do battle with Stuart Bingham.

While Joe O'Connor will face off against Kyren Wilson.

Both have just got underway. Stay tuned for updates.

Maguire's on song

Stephen Maguire punched the air and rapped his knuckles on the table as he overturned a 63-point deficit to establish a 10-6 lead over chalkgate rival Shaun Murphy.

In this second-round Grudge Match, the Magician had done his own fist pumps at key moments and this riled the Scotsman, who just needs three frames on Sunday to progress.

Si Jiahui 9-13 Jak Jones

Last year's semi-finalist is out!

It's Jak who progresses, after holding his nerve.

He's had two appearances at the Crucible, getting to the quarters both times.

Big test next though against Judd Trump.

Higgins 4-4 Allen

And it’s the end of the session.

Higgins appeared to baulk with the frame at his mercy.

Allen raced through some reds for a run to 27, before playing safety on the final red.

Eventually, Higgins sinks a long red… finally! Rapturous applause follows, with the crowd knowing that’s the frame.

It’s level for now, until the overnight session that is.

Higgins 3-4 Allen

Higgins concedes the frame following a passage of play where his safety left an open red for Allen.

The frame began with Higgins, again wasteful from range, missing a long red.

Allen had raced to a 65 lead to ensure Higgins was needing snookers.

Si Jiahui 9-11 Jak Jones

Meanwhile, at the interval, Jones is on course for the qaurter-final.

He has taken a 11-9 lead at the interval against last year's semi-finalist.

It's not been a classic, though.

We haven't seen one frame with a break of over 50.

Higgins 3-3 Allen

And we're all square.

Higgins might not be finding his range from distance, but his short game is working nicely.

He builds up a 48 lead until over-running on the black and leaving himself with too fine a cut.

Allen takes the reprieve with both hands, or does he?

When it looks like he's going to win the frame building up momentum on 42, he just falls at the final hurdle.

A missed green sealed his fate, letting Higgins pot that, then blue for the frame.

Higgins 2-3 Allen

It appeared that Allen had given Higgins the advantage by blowing a routine red.

But Higgins struggles - he misses a long red by a country mile. We've seen him sink those.

Gives Pistol the opportunity to clean the table.

He doesn't quite manage it, but the break of 79 gives him the frame and the lead.

Trump reveal

Judd Trump has spoken more about the offer he received from China for a breakaway snooker tour.

"I don't know, I didn't even get that far," he said.

"I'm not interested one bit. I'm in my prime. If I was older and at the end of my career maybe it would be different, but I don't want to waste my prime on exhibition matches.

"I would be a lot happier winning my money than being gifted it. Where I am in my career, how I'm playing and the success I've been having, I feel I can earn this money and really have a sense of achievement.

"That's something my mum and dad would want as well. My mum and dad would be more proud if I did it that way."

Allen 2 -2 Higgins

A run of 47 is enough to draw Allen level at the interval.

He had earlier hit a brilliant blue that cannoned into the reds to set himself up nicely for the frame.

The Pistol was patient.

The World No3 Higgins has plenty to think about.

Si Jiahui 8 vs 10 Jak Jones

Another nervy frame this time ends in favour of Jones.

He kept his composure to pot two difficult reds which allowed him to clear up and take the frame 79-49.

Where is the World Snooker Championship held?

Four-time world champion Mark Selby was eliminated in the first round

The Crucible Theatre, in the heart of Sheffield, has staged the World Championship every year since 1977 and the venue's current contract runs until 2027.

O'Sullivan recently told The Sun that he would like to see the World Championship moved, suggesting Saudi Arabia and China as alternatives.

What do you get for making a maximum 147 break?

Any player who makes a maximum break at the World Championship will receive £40,000, with 14 having been made over the years - including two in the 2023 tournament.

Wta madrid day 5 predictions including coco gauff vs dayana yastremska.

  • April 26, 2024
  • Manuel Traquete

Coco Gauff at the French Open

Day 5 at the WTA 1000 in Madrid will see all eight matches from the top half of the draw being played, with some of the world’s best players taking the court, including current US Open champion and 2022 Roland Garros finalist Coco Gauff. It should be a day full of exciting action and plenty of tight matches, and we predict all of them–split between this and a separate article .

WTA Madrid Day 5 Predictions

Madison keys vs liudmila samsonova.

Head-to-head: Keys 2-1 Samsonova

This should be an extremely close match between two players who are very close in both ranking and ability. Neither has been playing particularly well in 2024 so far and both are trying to get a big result to get their season back on track. All three of their previous matchups were extremely close as well, so this is a very tough match to call. Prediction: Keys in 3

Jelena Ostapenko vs Maria Lourdes Carle

Head-to-head: first meeting

Carle has been playing really well here in Madrid, going past qualifying and winning her first two main draw rounds without dropping a single set in those four matches. That said, Ostapenko is a huge step up in level; while Carle might put up some resistance, it’s very difficult to see her get past the world #10. Prediction: Ostapenko in 3

Leylah Fernandez vs Ons Jabeur

Head-to-head: Jabeur 2-0 Fernandez

Fernandez undoubtedly has a lot of potential, but she hasn’t really delivered on it much after her shocking run to the US Open final in 2021. Jabeur, on the other hand, is one of the world’s best players and although she often comes up short in big finals she did win Madrid back in 2022, her only big title to date. Fernandez won’t be an easy opponent, but it should be Jabeur coming through here in the end. Prediction: Jabeur in 3

Coco Gauff vs Dayana Yastremska

After Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff is arguably the main favorite for Roland Garros. The young American seems destined to a great career and she has proved to be extremely comfortable on clay. She looked ominous in her first match here in Madrid as she double bagelled Rus in 52 minutes and showed that she will be very tough to stop this clay season. Prediction: Gauff in 2
