Yale creates new ways to tour campus

With updated online virtual tours and the creation of a new smartphone tour app, there are now more ways to explore Yale than ever before, both on campus and from the comfort of one’s own home.

Originally created in 2011, the virtual tours allow people to see Yale’s campus, halls, dorm rooms and facilities online while learning about these campus fixtures from friendly, virtual tour guides. There are five tours available, showcasing the campus in general, residential colleges, athletic facilities, engineering offerings and science facilities and research opportunities. Aside from the athletic one, all tours were updated this summer with new photographs, new locations and little tweaks to the tour guides’ scripts.

The campus tour app that rolled out this summer, called “Yale Admissions Campus Tour,” allows visitors on campus to learn more about Yale even if they cannot join an official tour. The smartphone tracks where visitors are on campus and provides information about different locations, allowing visitors to explore Yale at their own pace. It features all the stops of the University-run on-campus tour and even includes the new residential colleges, which have not yet been added to the on-campus tour.

“The virtual tour and app are a wonderful way for visitors from around the world to learn more about our campus and get a glimpse of student life at Yale,” said Nancy Franco, the director of the Yale Visitor Center. “Although we offer daily tours, it may not be practical for everyone to make a visit to New Haven.”

The new virtual tour features many locations that had not been built by 2011 and others that have been heavily renovated since then, said Director of Outreach and Communications Mark Dunn. These locations include Evans Hall, which houses the School of Management and was completed in 2014, and the Yale Quantum Institute, established in 2015.

Dunn added that he was particularly excited about showing the Yale University Art Gallery and Yale Center for British Art, as both grew in size and underwent significant changes since the last tour’s debut. The tour also showcases other facilities not previously included, such as the Leitner Family Observatory and Planetarium.

The changes to the virtual tour guides’ scripts consisted mostly of replacing outdated information, such as the number of residential colleges and the title “master,” as well as adding some new information, particularly to the Science and Engineering tours, Dunn said.

“It was really a good chance for us to review what was [in the tours] to make sure we were showcasing the most exciting spaces and stories on campus right now,” Dunn said.

The new smartphone app features both written and audio descriptions of various sites at Yale, such as Old Campus and Sterling Memorial Library. Dunn said that because some locations — the residential colleges, for instance — might be locked when visitors decide to take the self-guided tour, the app also includes some photos of the interiors of each featured campus space. The app is designed to allow users to “be in the public spaces around campus” and still be able to learn more about them, he added.

In the past, Dunn said, if visitors wanted to tour campus on their own, or simply could not make it to a scheduled tour, all Yale could provide them was a map.

The smartphone tour app and the virtual tour have one important thing in common with the on-campus tour — both are narrated by Yale’s student guides.

“It was so exciting for me to have students be featured in both of these experiences,” Dunn said. “They really are what sets Yale apart and what really connects with prospective students more than anything else.”

Leah Surrat ’18, the narrator of the virtual engineering tour, said the engineering tour she attended when she visited campus before her first year was one of the main reasons she chose to come to Yale, so it was nice to be able to share her experience with others and represent the tour guide program.

Stephanie Spear ’19, who narrated the science tour, said it was a great idea to update the tour to keep up with the changes in campus’s facilities.

“It’s actually quite surreal to think that I am the person prospective applicants will be seeing and hearing when they go learn more about science at Yale,” Spear said. “I feel really honored to be able to represent our school in this way and hope that I can do a good job of convincing prospective students to apply.”

More than 500,000 unique visitors have gone through Yale’s virtual tours since 2011.

Yale's Residential Colleges

The Residential College housing system is at the heart of the Yale experience. Before arriving on campus, each first-year student is randomly assigned to one of fourteen residential colleges, giving Yalies a built-in community from the moment they arrive. Most Yale students quickly become convinced that their residential college is the best. Each close-knit community, housed in stunning buildings centered on a green courtyard, serves as a microcosm of Yale’s diverse student population, while preserving the intimacy of a smaller college experience.

Now more than 75 years old, Yale’s residential college system is perhaps the most distinctive feature of undergraduate life at Yale. It provides a built-in, tight-knit family for students from the moment they arrive, blending diversity, camaraderie, and pride for one’s residential community.

Big & Small

Far more than just dormitories, Yale’s residential colleges serve as a home away from home for students. Each college has its own library, gym, dining hall, and activity spaces – from movie theatres and recording studios to basketball courts and printing presses – all housed in distinctive, stunning buildings that center around grassy courtyards.

The term “college” can be misleading. Yale’s residential colleges have nothing to do with majors. Instead, all students are randomly assigned to a college before they even arrive on campus and spend all four years living alongside that cohort. Each college creates a microcosm of the undergraduate student body, blending the cohesiveness and intimacy of a small school with the vibrancy and resources of a world-class university.

Diversity & Community

The colleges provide an exceptional opportunity to meet and learn from students with different interests – people students might not otherwise encounter in their courses or extracurricular activities. Many students form their closest and most enduring friendships through their college, though students can choose to engage in residential college life as much as they like.

The colleges also bring together faculty and students to form an integrated support system. Each college hosts guest speakers, fellowships, and cultural events. With programs of formal advising, seminars, and activities that encourage students’ extracurricular interests, the colleges create a dynamic bridge between academic and social life.

Residential Colleges Defined

Head and Dean: The Head of the College and Dean of the College are senior faculty and administrators who live in the college, eat meals with students in the dining hall, and serve as the college’s leaders.

Buttery:  In the basement of each college is a snack bar that sells cheap food late at night. It often serves as a gathering place for students in the college to take a break from working.

College Tea:  Each Head of College hosts afternoon teas throughout the year at which students can gather in small groups to interact with a guest speaker. Some recent guests include Denzel Washington, Brian Williams, R.L. Stein, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, and Whoopi Goldberg.

Study Break:  College Heads and Deans make sure students take plenty of breaks from studying, so during finals time they host nightly study breaks in their homes with plenty of food.

Dining Hall:  Each college has its own dining hall where students eat. In addition, each college has its own library, gym, TV room, music practice room, and other facilities like theaters.

Tyng Cup:  Each college competes against all others in over thirty intramural sports, ranging from soccer to ping pong. The college that performs the best gets the coveted Tyng Cup.

I will be giving you a dorm tour of my freshman college suite here at Yale University! All Yale Undergrads are randomly split into 14 different residential colleges; luckily, I was placed into the best one: Pierson! YouTube: Arnold Setiadi.

So today we are going to do a tour of my norm here at Yale, my freshman dorm and the way it works. That hell is that Yellow undergrads are split into 14 random residential colleges, and I'm split into Pearson College and Pearson College in particular, lives on old campus, which is where most of the freshmen are housed in two, and Pearson in particular, is housed in land and Write hall, which is also what we call held up. I know that it's very complicated, but basically we are notoriously known for a very small dorms. All of the Pearson College students are housed in here. I have one roommate, so they're to double in here for four people total, and I am on the fourth floor, so we are always walking up every day, but you get used to it. Also on this floor, we share a bathroom with four other girls next door. Are some so sorry for not saying anything because I didn't want to bother anybody. I didn't wanna wake anybody up in the hallways you know, we are a pretty close knit family. Let me get started the door to our room and, as you can tell to the left over here way, have a recycling bin such garbage slashed brewing and some shoes, some shoes that are kind of just messy over there. I got everything is blank because we still need to decorate our way. Have Mr Sun a couch with these lights, just like starting a little, please. Then here we have our little table over here and this is my roommate to Joe's desk. You know, this is my sweet matrix vest missing that were made Sam's best. So if you have any recommendations because we are always open to, you know, making everything look a little bit better. Who was that? So basically those pillows, that table, the biggest mirror, all these lights, pretty much all of them were about my future. Okay, so this is my little area to study just in time. If you want me to go more in depth, I'd like you to show all the things I got you. I could definitely do a video that But once I said what I said, Like I said before, we live in elder women. Recall were notoriously known for having a small rooms. It's a pretty decent, I think that's my Yeah, who? Thank you guys once again for clicking on the video. I'm sorry for the camera and the audio quality, and we are definitely going to be decorating this a bit more and making it more homey, and I might update you guys in the future, but I was gonna say against this refreshment in our house in here. Once we are upperclassmen, we get placed into our actual residential college, which people say is pretty big. Oh, by the way, I haven't I don't know if I showed it with this light, Have you seen number back with its weird lighting? Yale college admits 2,146 applicants from record applicant pool.

Yale’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions has completed its review of first-year applications and offered admission to 2,146 of the 57,465 students who applied to be part of Yale College’s Class of 2028. The newly admitted applicants will be joined by an additional 53 students who were admitted during the 2022-23 admissions cycle but opted to postpone their matriculation for one year.

The cohort of admitted students includes 709 applicants who were notified of their admission in December though the Early Action program and 72 more who were admitted through the QuestBridge National College Match program. Since 2007, Yale has admitted more than 2,000 applicants affiliated with QuestBridge , a nonprofit organization that connects high-achieving students from lower-income backgrounds with selective colleges and universities.

Students admitted to the Class of 2028 represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, two U.S. territories, and 62 countries. They will graduate from more than 1,500 secondary schools, and their intended majors include 83 of Yale’s undergraduate academic programs. A detailed profile of the incoming class will be available when students arrive on campus in August.

This year’s pool of first-year applicants was the largest in the college’s history — 10% larger than the previous year, said Jeremiah Quinlan, dean of undergraduate admissions and financial aid. Since 2020, the first-year applicant pool has grown by 66%, a shift Quinlan attributed to Yale adopting a test-optional policy in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In February, the admissions office announced a new policy that reinstates a testing requirement while expanding the list of qualifying exams. The new policy will go into effect for the upcoming admissions cycle.

“ The diverse range of strengths, ambitions, and lived experiences we saw in this year’s applicant pool was inspiring,” said Quinlan. “We gauge the success of our outreach efforts by these qualities, and not by the total number of applications. But it is heartening to see that Yale College continues to attract exceptionally promising students from all backgrounds.” 

In September, Quinlan and Yale College Dean Pericles Lewis wrote to the Yale College community to outline the college’s response to the 2023 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on race and admissions; they shared another message in February with updates on nearly a dozen new initiatives. “Despite the changed legal landscape,” the deans wrote on Feb. 8, “our community’s values remain as firm as ever, and our shared goal of building and supporting a community whose excellence is strengthened by its diversity remains unchanged.”

Yale College’s extraordinary investment in need-based financial aid is a pillar of these efforts to promote diversity, said Kari DiFonzo, director of undergraduate financial aid. For all admitted students, Yale College meets 100% of demonstrated financial need, regardless of citizenship or immigration status, and financial aid offers are based entirely on a family’s demonstrated financial need.

Yale College does not expect parents earning less than $75,000 annually — with typical assets — to make any contribution toward the cost of their child’s education, DiFonzo said. The financial aid offers for these families, which are known as “zero parent share” offers, cover the full cost of all billed expenses — tuition, housing, the meal plan, and hospitalization insurance — as well as travel to and from New Haven.

DiFonzo explained that financial aid offers for admitted students will not be delayed due to processing challenges associated with the Free Application for Federal Student AID (FAFSA).

“ Yale uses its own methodology to assess a family’s financial need, using a process that is more comprehensive and more sensitive to distinctive financial challenges than what the FAFSA provides alone,” said DiFonzo. “Thankfully, financial aid officers can understand a family’s demonstrated financial need using information from other documents. Most admitted students who applied for aid will receive their financial aid offer at the same time they receive their admissions decision.”

All newly admitted students will be invited to visit campus in April 2024 for Bulldog Days, a three-day immersive experience of life at Yale, or Bulldog Saturday, a one-day program offering campus tours, panels, academic forums, and activities with student groups. The admissions office will also host virtual events and sponsor online communities to help admitted students connect with each other and with other members of the Yale community prior to Bulldog Days.

Quinlan credited last year’s  record-setting Bulldog Days program , which welcomed more than 1,400 students and 800 parents and family members, for  an historically high “yield rate” on students admitted to the Class of 2027.

“ Every spring, countless Yale students, faculty, staff, and alumni provide a warm welcome to our newest Yalies” said Mark Dunn, admissions office’s senior associate director for outreach and recruitment. “I believe the college’s greatest asset is its people, and my top priority each April is connecting admitted students with the people who make Yale so special.”

Dunn expressed gratitude to the student volunteers who will open their residential college suites to visiting admitted students and host special events, the faculty who will participate in the academic fair and lead master classes, and the staff who will help more than 1,200 admitted students get a taste of life at Yale during Bulldog Days and Bulldog Saturday. 

The admissions office makes a special effort to provide travel funding to students from lower-income families to enable them to visit campus before finalizing their college decision. Last year more than 500 admitted students received grants to travel to campus for Bulldog Days. 

Newly admitted students will have until May 1 to reply to their offer of admission.
