Zenhub

Zenhub is a productivity management tool for software teams. It integrates with GitHub so developers can work closely and in context with code while simplifying project management and streamlining processes with automated workflows. ZenHub goes beyond GitHub so that the whole software team including non-developers can communicate, coordinate, and collaborate in the product development process.

Table of Contents

Zenhub review: features and strengths, zenhub pricing, who uses zenhub, zenhub supported language, case studies, why choose zenhub, company info, featured partners: project management software, github integration and workflow automation.

Zenhub provides native GitHub integration through browser extensions in Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. Its browser extensions allow developers managing code in GitHub to also manage their projects using features accessible through their browsers. It keeps information centralized and allows teams to keep project work, communication, and updates close and in context with GitHub code. No additional configuration, onboarding, or a separate login required. Any user with a GitHub account can connect to their organization and work on existing issues.

Zenhub automatically updates projects as users move and close issues in GitHub. Its workflow automation feature syncs projects as teams update and complete GitHub issues. It streamlines the process by removing bottlenecks, tedious tasks, and unnecessary status check-ins. Automated hand-offs ensure that updates in one workspace automatically reflect in other connected workspaces. Limiting repetitive tasks between teams and functions help reduce possibility of errors. Also, teams can spend more time in coding than in status meetings.

Agile Project Management

Zenhub provides Agile project management through its sprint planning tool. Zenhub Sprints automates a team’s sprint planning process with sprint schedules and automatic population of issues. Unfinished issues are also identified and carried over to next upcoming sprints. Teams can have their next three sprints planned and configured with issues automatically pulled in based on the team’s velocity.

The planning poker tool enables teams to get accurate estimates and prediction. Team members can vote independently and story point on their own time. Users can request estimates in GitHub from team members and the software will apply the story point to the issue automatically when the team reaches a consensus. Accurate estimates give the team a better understanding of their velocity and prevents over-commitment.

Reporting, Product Roadmap, Issues, and More

Zenhub reports track work in GitHub to provide real-time information. Teams can understand how fast they are working with burndown charts. The cumulative flow diagram shows how work flows across boards to provide data on workload, throughput, and issue progress. The velocity report shows their historical sprint progress and velocity. The control chart lets team track cycle time and lead time across their workspace. It also has release reports to forecast delivery dates, manage scope changes, and identify bottlenecks.

Productivity insights let teams correct and adjust as they identify roadblocks and optimization opportunities. Product roadmaps give organizations a view into the progress of projects. Color-coded updates show the status of each project. Teams can see epics and projects in one timeline-style view. The recently launched Zenhub Issues is an issue management tool that enables non-tech software team members like marketing, customer success, or design to work with technical teams without requiring them to have a GitHub account. They can create issues, descriptions, labels, and dependencies between GitHub and Zenhub issues. The Zenhub web app is also accessible in Safari and mobile devices.

Zenhub pricing is available in simple plans for teams with different needs. All plans, including the Free plan, includes unlimited team workspaces and full access to project management, productivity, and reporting features. A 14-day trial is available for paid plans, which starts when a user creates a Zenhub account and signs in for the first time.

  • The Free plan is applicable to open source project leaders and academic course instructors. This version includes a self-serve knowledge base and 24/7 community support.
  • The Growth plan at $8.33 per user, per month billed annually (or $12.50 per user, per month) includes all Free plan features and also cloud hosting, email support, and license management.
  • The Enterprise plan includes all features, including option for cloud hosting or on-premise installation, priority support, invoiced billing, a dedicated customer success manager, and access to beta programs for those on cloud-hosted versions.

Zenhub is for software teams of all sizes of companies in need of a project management tool for planning development work, tracking progress, and measuring productivity. It is ideal but not exclusive to Agile teams using GitHub as a code repository. Customers include Adobe, Swagger, Algorand, NASA, Astronomer, SAP Fieldglass, Comcast, Dapper Labs, and Kubermatic.

Zenhub supports English only at the moment.

Sean Robb is the software engineering manager for a company in Vancouver that develops flow blockchain products made for fun and games. While it started with a single blockchain-based game, it has since shifted to being an ecosystem. With multiple, separate development teams working on projects, it has become challenging for Robb to manage the work of each product team and keep the teams coordinated.

Robb found Zenhub to be the right project management tool with its features and structure. Features like planning poker, reporting, boards, and workflow automation enable teams to stay focused on their work while stakeholders and managers can view the whole picture. Zenhub enables teams have its issues represented on multiple boards. Centralization helps streamline the company’s processes broadly and still allow individual teams to adjust and optimize their own workflows.

Sascha Haase is Vice-President of Edge at an organization that helps its customers automate Kubernetes and cloud native operations. When the company decided to move all development into GitHub, Haase looked for ways to improve the company’s use of GitHub. Also, the company needed a project management solution that will make it easier for its global team of 100 members spread across 25 countries and 6 time zones to coordinate, provide data on velocity, and automate repeatable work.

It became clear to Haase that Zenhub is the right choice. The productivity software offers powerful but simple automation perfect for the company’s distributed teams. No matter where team members are, they can coordinate seamlessly using Zenhub. Automated handoffs simplifies the movement of tasks between teams so no issues arise when the time comes for a task to change hands.

Zenhub enables developers to code software in GitHub and manage projects without having to work on a separate platform. At the same time, it provides additional ways for non-tech team members to manage issues, create tasks, and track progress without the need for a GitHub account but still be able to work closely with developers. Developers can focus on working on their code using GitHub while also collaborating more effectively with the rest of the organization.

Agile, simplified., breaks down siloes, built for github, frequently asked questions, how secure is my data in zenhub.

We take security very seriously and commit to doing everything in our power to keep your data safe and private. We use industry-standard encryption and integrate with GitHub's own Open Authentication (OAUTH) system. At no point do we have access to your GitHub credentials, and at no point do we ever read any of your code, your branches, or the contents of your issues or Pull Requests. Please refer to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy for more details.Early in 2022, we announced Service Organization Control 2 (SOC 2) Type I compliance. A few months later, we’re pleased to announce that Zenhub has received its SOC 2 Type II certification. A SOC 2 certification audits how a cloud-based service provider handles sensitive information. Considered the gold standard for security compliance, SOC 2 audits are conducted by an independent third party who is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or CPA firm, and use the criteria outlined by the AICPA. SOC 2 Type I assesses the design of controls and security processes at a point in time. SOC 2 Type II validates the efficacy of these controls by monitoring them in operation for three to six months and note any exceptions.Achieving SOC 2 Type I accreditation, which Zenhub achieved in April 2022, means that our infrastructure, development practices, and management processes meet (or exceed) required levels of oversight and monitoring and that we can detect and address issues quickly and reliably. In July 2022, Zenhub achieved SOC 2 Type II, with zero exceptions, which further validated our controls and security framework, attesting to our operational effectiveness in responding to system vulnerabilities.Learn more about Zenhub’s commitment to privacy and security in this video .

Do I need a GitHub account to use Zenhub?

You don’t need a GitHub account to use Zenhub. However, currently you can only get access to all of Zenhub’s features when you connect Zenhub with a GitHub account. Those who don’t connect with GitHub can still use some of Zenhub’s features, such as viewing high-level roadmaps, tracking the progress of epics and projects in their organization, or creating and using Zenhub Issues . Signing up for Zehub without a GitHub account is ideal for non-technical team members who still want some visibility into the software development process. We’re continuously working towards bringing more of our most loved features to non-GitHub users. Stay tuned!

A new way to use Zenhub is here: Introducing Zenhub Issues

In 2015 Zenhub changed the game as one of the first products in the market to enable teams to run their entire project management process within GitHub. After 8 years, our fanbase of users who love managing projects close to their code continues to grow. We’ve evolved to meet their changing needs, offering everything from live roadmaps to planning poker to workflow automation. Today, Zenhub is the go-to agile solution for GitHub users.

But not everybody in an organization works in GitHub. And this has become a challenge for some of our biggest customers and fans. Knowing the importance of cross-collaboration in our own team, we heard our users loud and clear. And finally, we’re answering.

Today, we’re announcing the launch of Zenhub Issues – a new way to create tasks in Zenhub without using GitHub. This marks the start of an evolution for Zenhub from a browser-based plug-in to a true team platform. To support this vision, we’re also excited to announce that we’ve raised $10M in Series A funding. Even in challenging times, we’re more bullish than ever on the future of our product and bringing project management closer to code.

Read on to learn how your team can adopt Zenhub Issues into your workflow today!

The Challenge:

Software teams want to work together side-by-side, regardless of whether or not they use GitHub. Having a centralized source of truth is especially important when it comes to planning and tracking software projects. Previously, Zenhub’s features only supported users with GitHub accounts connected to our platform. In fact, trialing users previously couldn’t explore most of Zenhub without connecting to GitHub. That is, until now. Zenhub Issues introduce a new way to use Zenhub without the need to connect to GitHub to track tasks.

So, what are Zenhub Issues?

Zenhub Issues is a brand new issue management experience in Zenhub. Zenhub Issues are issues you can use entirely independently of GitHub, ie. without requiring a GitHub account. In fact, you could populate an entire Zenhub board without ever connecting to GitHub.

Zenhub Issues allow you to create an issue with labels and descriptions, assignees and dependencies between GitHub or Zenhub issues. They are ideal for any non-development tasks you don’t need to access inside GitHub.

What’s the difference between Zenhub Issues and GitHub Issues?

Zenhub Issues differ from Github Issues in that you do not connect them to any GitHub repository or any work happening inside of one. Because of this, you can use Zenhub Issues to track tasks inside Zenhub, just like you would GitHub Issues, but without ever connecting a GitHub repository.

Why your team should start using them

Software development has become a critical function for so many companies. Because of this, we recognize it’s only natural to want to enable non-technical folks – like marketing, customer success, design, etc. – to work with technical teams more harmoniously. For this purpose, and many others, including enhanced security and less money spent on GitHub licenses, we’ve designed Zenhub Issues.

Here are some of the best use cases we think you’ll enjoy:

  • Track any non-development tasks in Zenhub. For example, “Hire a new Sr. backend developer.”
  • Enable non-technical teams, like Marketing or Design, to work entirely alongside the development team on their projects without paying for GitHub licenses or worrying about security concerns regarding access to your codebase.
  • Keep stakeholders – like executives or product leaders – informed on project progress with an easier-to-use interface than GitHub.
  • Invite outside users – like contractors, clients, and customers – to use Zenhub without granting unnecessary GitHub repo permissions.
  • Consolidate tools and reduce the need for separate project and product management tools.
  • Track customer support issues in Zenhub to make it easier for developers to decide what CS issues to add to their workflow.

How you can start using Zenhub Issues

You can create Zenhub Issues using the “+” button in the top right-hand corner of Zenhub. Right now, the default issue type is GitHub Issues, but you can change this when you go to an epic to create an issue. To learn more about creating a Zenhub Issue, check out our help center article or the video below.

From plug-in to platform

The best thing about the launch of Zenhub Issues is that it’s just the beginning. With our Series A funding announcement, we’re accelerating our vision of evolving Zenhub beyond a GitHub plugin to enable teams to collaborate with non-technical teammates and stakeholders.

We owe our platform’s big improvements to your invaluable feedback. And there’s much more to come for Zenhub Issues in the coming months, including commenting, file uploading, and the ability to convert Zenhub Issues to GitHub Issues. Our roadmap is packed with exciting developments, but we’re eager to hear your thoughts on which features are most helpful and what you’d like to see next. Whether you have comments, suggestions, or just want to show us some love, please visit our profile on Product Hunt . We can’t wait to hear from you!

Before you go, we’ll leave you with this: Zenhub Issues is about enabling cross-collaboration. If you have team members that could benefit from Zenhub access but don’t have a GitHub account, invite them! Zenhub is a great way to keep designers, marketing, customer service, and other teams working closely with developers. See how to invite a team member here.

What is the history of Zenhub?

In 2014, Zenhub was unveiled by Aaron Upright and Peter O'Neil as a sophisticated, innovative project management tool that seamlessly harmonized software development with project administration. The vision was to maintain a consistent, up-to-date status of the project while facilitating sound business determinations based on current, accurate data. Their objective was to foster productivity and focus without compromising efficacy or accuracy.

This ingenious fusion was initiated via a browser extension, infusing the Zenhub User Interface directly into GitHub, thus cultivating an environment that significantly boosted productivity and accuracy whilst mitigating the effects of context switching.

Context switching poses a significant risk to developer productivity, as the distraction of a disjointed and detached project management tool can prove expensive in terms of time and focus. By converging other project management tools with code in GitHub via Zenhub, this issue was essentially eliminated, creating a streamlined platform for project creation, monitoring, and management without any distraction.

As the platform grew, Zenhub incorporated additional advanced features to boost team productivity. Enhanced workspaces, organization structure like Epics, comprehensive reporting, Kanban boards, and more were made available, making Zenhub a critical tool for software development teams. Increasingly recognized for its unique capabilities, Zenhub revolutionized the agile project management and development process in various industries globally. Founded in Vancouver, Canada, Zenhub continues its growth trajectory, maintaining its lead position in the industry.

Zenhub Pros

Zenhub empowers software development teams with its versatile and fully integrated project management capabilities. Understanding that each team possesses its unique workflow, Zenhub delivers customized workspaces, allowing teams to design task boards reflecting their distinctive operational styles and tasks. Augmented with a browser extension and a web application, the adaptive software could be deployed on the cloud or on-premise, accentuating its flexibility.

The ingenious amalgamation of project management with GitHub is another standout feature of Zenhub. This integration vastly minimizes context switching, enabling the developers to devote time and effort more efficiently into coding and less on extraneous tasks. Consequently, it saves substantial time, boosting the team's productivity.

For teams on a budget or individuals contemplating to explore without financial commitments, Zenhub provides an inclusive Free Plan. This grants access to all features and functionalities of the software, offering a perfect starting point for novices.

Arguably, the most defining characteristic of Zenhub is its seamless integration with GitHub. Some developers applaud how it perfectly aligns with GitHub’s flow, they often misconstrue the two as a single product. As a result, it amplifies team efficiency, fostering improved productivity overall.

Zenhub Cons

ZenHub is lauded for being a robust and comprehensive project management solution, widely embraced by developers. It certainly possesses an impressive range of capabilities, but it also carries a few caveats that potential users should note. Its interface, while powerful, leans more toward the complex, which could prove intimidating for novices. The problems might extend further as ZenHub's integration with GitHub might present issues for those unfamiliar with the latter.

Additionally, ZenHub functions exclusively as a browser extension, which inherently restricts its accessibility; it only works when the browser is active. It also doesn’t afford a built-in chat feature, a key tool for instantaneous team communication.

Beyond these limitations, some users report experiencing a sluggish performance with ZenHub, a situation that often correlates with the size of their boards. Moreover, unless you hold an Enterprise plan, you might find the response from ZenHub's support team to be slower than desired.

However, potential users should also consider ZenHub's potent capabilities. When wielded effectively, these can provide a significant edge to team operations. Regardless of its drawbacks, ZenHub remains a formidable player in the project management field.

In conclusion, Zenhub is a highly effective project management tool that enhances GitHub workflows, offering a plethora of features to streamline processes and boost productivity. It's an invaluable tool for developers and project managers alike, providing an efficient platform for seamless project coordination. Whether you're an experienced professional or a novice in project management, Zenhub offers essential insights to help you navigate your projects successfully.

Topics & Questions

Is zenhub no longer free.

Renowned project management software provider, ZenHub, has undergone substantial transformations in its pricing structure, thus bringing an end to its previous offering of free services for public repositories. The dynamics have shifted in such a way that usage of the platform is now contingent on a 14-day trial period, offered free of charge, which upon completion requires users to enlist in one of their paid subscription plans.

With this pricing strategy, ZenHub aims to bolster the sustainability and enhancement of their services while being cognisant of how this impacts easy accessibility for users who were previously partaking freely. In consequence, ZenHub has morphed from being a freely available project management and tracking service to a fully paid subscription model.

This considerable pricing model restructure may pose limiting access for many of its users, who leveraged the platform for their only project management tool needs without incurring any cost. Though it's a drive towards securing financial stability and service improvement, it effectively positions ZenHub as inaccessible for users seeking free project management tools. As it stands currently, the platform's pricing model compels users to purchase a plan post the free trial, hence ZenHub is no longer free.

Is Zenhub safe?

Affirmatively, Zenhub can indeed be regarded as a safe software tool. Having earned distinguished respect and popularity within professional circles such as the tech and software development industry, its efficacy remains notably commendable. The security measures utilized by Zenhub encompass advanced systems including two-factor authentication and robust encryption protocols, which have been integrated with an objective to offer maximal protection to user data.

Further bolstering their commitment to uncompromised safety is the regular and rigorous audits that Zenhub subjects its application and infrastructure to. The purpose of these audits is to consistently measure the existing security structures against the industry's best practices and institute necessary upgrades to any identified weaknesses.

In addition to these systematic efforts, Zenhub's data privacy policies have been tailored to align with the stipulations of international data protection regulations. This serves to provide Zenhub's customers with a compelling reassurance of the safety standards sustained by the tool. Thus, as a Zenhub user, you can enjoy a feeling of tranquility in the knowledge that the security of your data is a top priority for the company. The intangible peace of mind this offering provides ultimately underscores the safe standing of Zenhub in the market, emboldening users to proceed with utmost trust in the tool.

What are the issues in Zenhub?

As a project management tool tailored for GitHub, ZenHub grapples with a host of challenges that can potentially affect its efficacy. Among the primary issues is a multifaceted and unintuitive user interface that can be especially daunting for novices attempting to navigate its pathways. Likewise, the real-time updates offered by ZenHub suffer from inconsistency, an aspect that tends to generate confusion among team members.

Another area that puts ZenHub's reliability into question is the estimation process, which often presents inaccuracies thereby jeopardizing project planning and track progress. Its compatibility exclusively with GitHub also poses a limitation, constricting its broader applicability across various other platforms. Notably, ZenHub falls short on certain features - including project templates and time-tracking mechanisms - that its competitors readily provide, resulting in a relative deficiency in terms of efficiency.

Cumulatively, these detrimental characteristics constitute significant obstacles that could substantially affect the overall productivity of teams who utilize ZenHub for project management. Therefore, for optimum outcomes, these elements call for comprehensive consideration and mitigation strategies.

Is Zenhub GitHub free?

Zenhub is a project management tool that seamlessly integrates with GitHub, a popular platform among developers, thereby enhancing its functionality with a suite of advanced features. Unlike GitHub, which operates on an individual-based, free-use model, Zenhub requires a subscription for full access to its tools and resources. Each subscription plan is carefully curated to cater to different team sizes and organizational needs, reflecting the diversity of Zenhub's customer base.

Why use Zenhub?

Zenhub is leading a revolution in project management. This innovative tool is now indispensable for agile teams, bringing about significant transformation in their operational efficiency. Zenhub, an all-encompassing solution, merges effortlessly with GitHub, eliminating the dependency on numerous plug-ins or external applications. This leads to an organized workspace free from unnecessary clutter.

Its distinctive features such as roadmaps, epics, and automation are designed to simplify tasks, create sprints, augment workflow, and boost team collaborations. These attributes of Zenhub enable team members to assign tasks with ease, and create an environment that allows for continuous workflow enhancements and optimal team collaboration.

Further, Zenhub is not only about project management and collaboration. It also promotes data-driven decisions with its integrated reporting and analytical tools. This aspect of the tool supports strategic decision-making, contributing significantly to project predictability and transparency.

Utilizing Zenhub undoubtedly enhances operational efficiency, increases transparency, and boosts the predictability of projects. It is a game-changer, acting as the pillar of success for modern-day software development teams. By harnessing Zenhub's potential, teams are not just optimizing their project management but also stepping closer to their strategic objectives, making it the ace in the pack for leading towards project success.

How do I add the Zenhub extension to GitHub?

Zenhub is a robust project-management tool specifically created to augment the GitHub interface. Recognized for its proficiency, Zenhub is a reliable tool designed to streamline and significantly simplify your project management tasks on GitHub.

Commencing the set-up process is straightforward. By visiting the Zenhub website directly, users can easily initiate the integration process. There, on the homepage, you aloofly find the inviting 'Get Started for Free' button - a gateway to unlocking various download options tailored for different browsers like Chrome, Firefox or Edge.

As you sign up and select your preferred browser, Zenhub systematically guides you through the remaining set-up steps. Follow the step-by-step prompts provided to facilitate a successful add-on of Zenhub to your browser. The entire process is intuitive, designed with user accessibility in mind.

Upon successful installation, you will notice a new Zenhub tab appearing on your GitHub account interface. This tab is your new project-management toolbox that will seamlessly harmonize your existing GitHub data and tasks. However, do remember to enable permissions for Zenhub to access your GitHub. This crucial step ensures a successful integration, unlocking Zenhub's full potential.

In conclusion, the set-up process for Zenhub is both user-friendly and convenient. Once installed and properly integrated, Zenhub stands as a significant aid in navigating your GitHub project management tasks at ease.

Is there a Zenhub extension for Safari?

ZenHub, a platform offering an expansive variety of productivity-enhancing features, currently lacks a direct extension for Safari. Despite this, it should be noted that its development focus has been fundamentally concentrated on browser extensions for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox. These browser extensions facilitate flawless integration with GitHub, effectively transforming it into a robust project management suite within the GitHub interface itself.

Regrettably, avid Safari users do not benefit from such seamless GitHub integration as ZenHub hasn't extended its extension services to the Safari platform. However, this is not to imply that Safari users are left entirely in the cold. ZenHub has a standalone web application that compensates for this gap in service, offering a palette of features comparable to those available through a browser extension. This application, though lacking the smooth GitHub integration, presents a viable productivity-enhancing alternative to the browser extension which is a satisfactory solution for Safari users. Consequently, while the absence of a ZenHub direct extension for Safari might seem limiting, Safari users can resort to the ZenHub web application to satisfy their productivity requirements, thus offering them convenience and efficiency.
