What our customers have said about our service:

Janine, Prachi and the team look after my regular business trips with ease, and when we changed covid levels they were incredibly proactive and contacted me.

Janine was unbelievably helpful and supportive, at a time of (desperate) need!!

We wish to thank and recommend Janine for her outstanding service. We called Janine at 2.00am to advise that our flight from Dublin was delayed and we would miss our connection in Oslo to Kirkenes to meet our Cruise down the Spine of Norway’s Bear. Janine immediately burst into action and rearranged our cruise to one two days later, sorted accommodation in Oslo, re-jigged our future itinerary and started the insurance claim processes. I highly recommend Janine and her college Prachi Koll who have arranged our complex 5-week European trip.

San Jose is the third-largest city in California and an urban hub of Silicon Valley in the San Francisco Bay area. It's well known for its sunny, mild weather and innovative community, as well as its deep roots in the agricultural industry of years past.

San Jose incorporates the old with the new in its bustling downtown district, where historic thoroughfares like San Pedro Square lead to modern cultural outlets like The Tech Interactive science center. Downtown is also the place where you'll find top cultural attractions like art museums and the state-of-the-art SAP Center , where hometown fans cheer on the NHL San Jose Sharks.

Winchester Mystery House

The Winchester Mystery House was the past residence of Sara Winchester, widow of William Winchester, and heiress to the massive Winchester fortune from the production of the Winchester repeating rifle–also known as "the gun that won the West."

After the untimely death of her husband and infant child, Sara Winchester moved to San Jose in 1886 and began a nearly 50-year renovation project on an eight-room farmhouse. Over the course of five decades, Sara Winchester created what is now known as the Winchester Mystery House, hosting thousands of visitors each year.

What makes this popular tourist attraction so mysterious is the renovation choices made by Sara Winchester. Local lore attributes the false stairs, misleading doors, and 160 different rooms as a measure to evade paranormal spirits stemming from her family's past. These theories and more are well touched upon during the guided tours available seven days of the week, which include access to the intricately manicured gardens surrounding the home.

The park surrounding the zoo has numerous amenities and children's play areas. The Crooked House within the park offers a whimsical adventure just outside of the ordinary, and a Dino Dig station allows kids to uncover new areas of interest. Two large play structures at the park are also a big hit with giant, twisty slides and numerous crawlspaces.

Mission Santa Clara de Asís on the Santa Clara University campus

The Mission Santa Clara de Asís is on the Santa Clara University campus and is the centerpiece fixture of this Jesuit university founded in 1851. The history of the Mission stretches back into the 1700s and the first exposure of Spanish explorers to the South Bay Area.

The Mission is still a consecrated Roman Catholic church, and interested members of the public are welcome to attend regularly scheduled mass. For more longstanding architectural attraction, the entire Santa Clara University campus is dotted with historic structures.

Los Gatos Creek Trail

Los Gatos Creek Trail is a regional bike trail stretching south from San Jose to Los Gatos. It's nearly 10 miles in length and is a popular pathway for bicyclists, joggers, walkers, and anyone who wants to enjoy the creekside environment.

The Los Gatos Creek Trail terminates in Downtown San Jose, not far from Guadalupe River Park, where more trails are found. It's a popular route on the weekends and the trail connects numerous regional parks, open space preserves, and other scenic destinations of the city.

San Jose Flea Market

The San Jose Flea Market is a time-honored gathering space in the Berryessa District. The open-air market started with 20 sellers in 1960, and today, it spans 120 acres and receives more than four million visitors each year. The market is open Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the year, rain or shine.

Daily passes are available for vendors looking to set up a stall, so the shopping selection changes with each visit. Expect a wide range of goods, including antiques, houseware, apparel, and electronics. While some purveyors may accept credit or debit cards, others may deal only in cash.

It's much more than a selling space at the flea market. Live music often provides a soundtrack between the stalls, and other family-friendly activities, like rides and arcade games, also draw a crowd. Ready-to-eat food is also available from local food trucks and snack vendors.

Japantown

This cultural hot spot is one of few historical Japantowns remaining in the United States and stems from over 120 years ago when the first Japanese immigrants settled in the area. Today, a vibrant mix of restaurants and storefronts comprise Japantown, also known as Jtown, as well as art galleries, fresh markets, and historical monuments.

Fremont Older Open Space

Fremont Older Open Space Preserve is on the urban fringe west of San Jose. It's one of many designated open spaces under the scope of the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District , providing over 65,000 acres of natural habitat west of San Jose up to Redwood City.

Fremont Older Preserve is particularly popular due to its quick access from San Jose. Parking for this 739-acre preserve is accessible at the end of Prospect Road in the neighboring city of Saratoga. Only 21 sites are available if everyone parks correctly, making finding a spot a challenge on the weekends.

The beautiful landscape of Fremont Older also makes the preserve popular. The Seven Springs Trail is also a favorite at the preserve, and both comprise some of San Jose's best hiking trails .

10 Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose, CA

Searching for the perfect weekend getaways from San Jose or elsewhere in the Bay Area? You’re in luck – there are plenty to choose from. In fact, one of my absolute favorite things about living in the South Bay is the abundance of day trips and weekend trips in close proximity to here.

Want to walk among the redwoods and scale epic mountain ranges? Or perhaps you’re in the mood for a quiet seaside escape, where you can stroll foggy shorelines and search for whales in the distance? Maybe you’re ready for a city break, where you can explore cultural attractions and sample world-class food? Or a wine country getaway, filled with leisurely brunches and boujee tastings?

Dog Friendly Accommodation Sonoma

Well, there’s a weekend getaway from San Jose to appeal to all of those desires…and many others! I’ve spent the past 2.5 years scouring California tourism websites, crossing off bucket list destinations, and discovering my own hidden gems throughout the state.

This list doesn’t cover every weekend trip from San Jose that I’ve enjoyed, but does include my top 10 favorites. Happy travels!

  • Yosemite National Park
  • Sonoma County
  • Napa Valley
  • San Luis Obispo
  • Carmel-by-the-Sea
  • Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from San Jose: 2.5 hours

2 Day Big Sur Itinerary

I’m not sure I’ll ever find the words to do justice to the magic of Big Sur  – the land of foggy coastlines, enchanting redwoods, kitschy family lodges, cozy log cabins and breathtaking scenic drives. It’s a place where you can choose your own adventure, from redwood hikes to seaside strolls and so much more.

Important side note: Big Sur is not a single town or national park, but rather an unincorporated area spanning 70 miles along the central California coastline. Within this region are multiple state parks, natural preserves, beaches, and hiking trails, all linked by the iconic Highway 1.

Best Hiking in Big Sur

And while the scenery and activities are amazing , my favorite memory from Big Sur is glamping in a hand-woven twig hut at Treebones Resort . I’ve stayed in some pretty unique accommodations  around the globe, but the twig hut definitely tops the list. That property is pure magic!

2. Yosemite

Distance from san jose: 3.5 hours.

What to Know Before You Visit Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is situated in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California, and is famed for its incredible cliffs, deep valleys, waterfalls, rivers, and ancient sequoia groves. During my own visit to Yosemite, the word that kept coming to mind was “majestic.”

The mountains, the trees, the waterfalls, the rivers—they’re all so powerful, grand, and wild within the park national boundaries. It’s just a larger than life kind of place!

The First Timer's Guide to Yosemite

We visited Yosemite during early summer, when the landscapes were lush and the waterfalls were roaring. But I’m itching to return in the winter months; I can only imagine how breathtaking and peaceful the scenery is when its blanketed in a thick layer of fluffy white snow. Add in a cozy lodge and a cup of spiked hot chocolate, and I’m all set!

Distance from San Jose: 45 minutes

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

One of the destinations I was most eager to visit after moving to San Jose was Oakland , the “other” city by the bay (with the original City By the Bay being San Francisco, of course).

Oakland is a true multicultural melting pot, and has developed a reputation for its trendy neighborhoods, colorful street murals, and bustling waterfront district. The hip and historic Temescal neighborhood swept me off my feet with its plentiful boutiques, funky dive bars, beer gardens, art galleries and cafes.

Temescal Alley Itinerary Oakland

And don’t even get me started on the food – Oakland has it all, from southern style mac-n-cheese ( promise me you’ll try the buffalo mac at Homeroom if you ever visit Oakland) to authentic Ethiopian, Burmese, Korean and other global cuisines.

4. santa cruz.

Santa Cruz CA

A quick trip over the hills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and you’ll feel like you’re a world away from Silicon Valley. For me, Santa Cruz almost feels more like SoCal than NorCal; the kitschy beach boardwalk, long stretches of shoreline, and laidback surfer vibes probably play a role in that.

My perfect day in Santa Cruz? Strolling down the beach with a coffee and a pastry, window shopping and eating my way through downtown, cheap thrills on the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and sunset at Natural Bridges State Beach.

Santa Cruz CA

Honestly, the entire stretch of coastline between San Fransisco and Santa Cruz makes for a great weekend getaway. Pescadero and Half Moon Bay are two of my favorite charming little towns north of Santa Cruz.

Distance from San Jose: 2 hours

Dutcher Crossing Vineyard Sonoma Dog Friendly

Ah, Sonoma . You will forever be one of my favorite weekend getaways from San Jose! No matter how many times I visit, I discover more charming towns, more sprawling vineyards, more excellent wines, and more reasons to return to this iconic region of California.

Don’t be fooled – there is a town called Sonoma, but most often when people talk about visiting “Sonoma” they’re referring to the entire county…which is quite large! You could drive for an hour and still be in Sonoma County, and there are plenty of charming towns to choose as your base.

Christopher Creek Winery

Healdsburg is my favorite town in Sonoma, with Sebastopol coming in as a close second. Not only is this region of California ridiculously beautiful, it also produces some truly world-class wines, and is more laid back (read: less pretentious) than neighboring Napa.

Wine Tasting in Calistoga CA

…that said, I’ll never pass up an opportunity to visit Napa Valley. My favorite towns (so far) are Calistoga and Napa , though I’ve heard great things about St. Helena too.

Some of Napa’s wineries truly look like they were plucked out of the Tuscan countryside; they’re incredibly regal and luxurious. Others are a bit more understated, but either way you can always be sure that the wine will be amazing .

Napa Private Wine Tasting

Accommodations in Napa can be quite pricey, so I usually opt for Airbnbs or budget chain hotels. With any luck, you’ll be tipsy enough that it won’t matter where you’re sleeping anyways!

7. San Luis Obispo

Distance from san jose: 3 hours.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

For wine enthusiasts, San Luis Obispo  is an excellent off-the-beaten-path alternative to Napa and Sonoma. San Luis Obispo County is actually the third largest wine region in all of California, but it’s much less popular among tourists than its northern counterparts.

The Edna Valley area is absolutely gorgeous, and is home to a number of highly-rated wineries in very close proximity to one another. It’s known primarily for its Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs – two personal favorites of mine.

How to Spend One Weekend in San Luis Obispo

Downtown San Luis Obispo is also cute as can be, with its plentiful hip cafes, charming brunch spots, lively bars, and quirky shops. If you’re able to visit on a Thursday, you can’t miss the iconic Thursday Night Farmer’s Market. It felt more like a festival or street party than a farmer’s market, really!

Adventure seekers can outdoor lovers can enjoy hiking, biking, kayaking and SUPing in the hills and coastal areas surrounding San Luis Obispo.

8. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Distance from san jose: 1.5 hours.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel-by-the-Sea . The name alone sounds like something out of a fairytale…and after seeing the town myself, I can safely say that the name is a perfect fit. This ritzy little village is known for its old world charm, scenic and walkable downtown, and dramatic coastal views.

Quaint cottages line the streets of Carmel’s one-square mile downtown area, along with boutiques and wine tasting rooms. You won’t find any street numbers here; instead, businesses and residents name their homes (i.e. “Sea Urchin”) or use cross-streets or descriptive details to provide directions.

Carmel by the Sea Weekend Getaway

Carmel is also the perfect jumping off point for exploring the famous 17-Mile Drive. This scenic road winds down the Pacific coastline past gorgeous vistas, world-famous golf courses and luxurious homes. You can also combine a trip to Carmel with a visit to nearby Monterey.

9. Santa Cruz Mountains

Distance from san jose: 30 minutes.

Savannah Chanelle Vineyards

True, the Santa Cruz Mountains are close enough to San Jose to be a day trip destination rather than a weekend getaway. But spending a night or two in this forested region is the perfect way to escape the madness of the city and rekindle your connection with nature.

There are a surprising number of charming Airbnbs in the Santa Cruz Mountains, most of which are cozy wood cabins surrounded by redwood trees and trickling streams. But we opted for something a bit more whimsical: glamping in a treehouse …on a working vineyard, no less!

Glamping Vineyard Treehouse California

The Santa Cruz Mountains are a hub for under-the-radar wineries and scenic hiking trails, so you can tailor this trip to your perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. How lucky are we to have such a stunning weekend getaway so close to where we live?

10. Lake Tahoe

Distance from san jose: 4 hours.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Lake Tahoe is one of those rare destinations that truly shines in any season. During the summer, you can booze cruise around the lake and cool off in the chilly, perfectly turquoise water. The hiking is excellent in almost any month of the year, and can be especially nice when the autumn leaves come out to play.

Winter is perhaps the most popular time for visit Lake Tahoe, when visitors flock to iconic ski resorts like Heavenly, Northstar, Kirkwood and Squaw Valley.

Lake Tahoe | Best Weekend Getaways from San Jose

Whether you prefer summer sports like swimming, kayaking, hiking and SUPing, or would rather cozy up in a log cabin and spend your afternoons hitting the slopes, Tahoe is easily one of the best weekend getaways from San Jose.

What do I pack for Alaska?

zest 4 travel

Alaska cruise season is quickly approaching.  Many people are wondering “WHAT DO I PACK! “.  After cruising to Alaska for over 10 years, I think I may have figured this out. 🙂

img_1222

First off remember….it’s summer !  Just because you are heading to the great northern region of Alaska, that does not mean it will be snowing and cold.   Sure, it will most likely rain (and therefore be a tad chilly) and you may get chilled while sailing into the glaciers.  BUT….once the ship stops, if the sun is shining, it can be very warm.  I have been to both Hubbard Glacier and Glacier Bay and gotten sunburned.  I’ve also been there, and Tracy Arm Fjord, with rain….so be prepared!  There have been visits to Juneau when the temperature climbed into the 80’s! It was so hot!

The most useful suggestion I have is layers, layers, layers!  Bring a lightweight waterproof jacket….heavy down coats are NOT required!  Neither are UGGS!  I can’t tell you the number of times I have watched people walk off the ships looking like Nanook of the north, only to be lugging all that gear back to the ships later…sweating!  Seriously, light weight layers is the answer.

zest 4 travel

The above photos are from Glacier Bay….a little overcast, but VERY warm!  The trip into Glacier Bay was a tad chilly…but hey!…the ship was moving, creating a slight wind. 🙂

If you plan to do any type of strenuous activity, bring the proper gear.  Waterproof shoes are always a good idea.

Here is what I have compiled after my years of Alaska sailing:

Alaska is all about the scenery. Most cruise ships provide binoculars in your cabin but they aren’t very good. We like to bring a small, travel size pair.

zest 4 travel

2 pair jeans or other long pants (in case one gets wet) Leggings are very popular now and are perfect for Alaska.

zest 4 travel

3-4 shirts to wear with jeans

one pair capris wear onboard.

1 nice dress for formal nights

1 or 2 skirts and/or nice pants and shirts/sweaters to wear with them – choose colors that work well together to create more outfits.

1 hooded sweatshirt

1 or 2 zip up sweatshirt-like jackets or sweaters

1 waterproof jacket or warm vest… or poncho This is j acket is waterproof, lightweight and good for hiking and travel. It keeps you dry when you need it and packs down small.

zest 4 travel

Another cruiser recommended this jacket also. She sized up to fit layers underneath.

zest 4 travel

scarf, hat and gloves (for sailing into the glaciers)

Alaska can be rainy. Most ships provide umbrellas but they tend to be large and difficult to carry. We always pack a compact umbrella , no matter where we are traveling.

zest 4 travel

1 or 2 pair dress shoes/sandals

1 pair sandals for pool deck

swimsuit and coverup (Many are probably thinking…seriously? a bathing suit?  Yes!  The ship’s pools will be open and the hot tubs will be running….enjoy them!)

2 pair good walking shoes (waterproofed is a good idea) I use this waterproof spray on my shoes.

zest 4 travel

Hint…wet shoes can be smelly. I use these to odor eliminators , you get enough for 3 pairs of shoes. They also work really well in your suitcase to remove odors.

zest 4 travel

It’s also smart to protect your clothes from dirty shoes with shoe bags .

zest 4 travel

good sunglasses – the glare off the deck will be very strong

zest 4 travel

socks and underwear (duh)

workout clothes – if you plan to hit the gym

Backpack purse ….I love this one, stylish yet functional

zest 4 travel

More and more passengers are using a this type of bag. It is easy to wear around your waist or as a crossbody .

zest 4 travel

sunscreen The glare off boat can be strong and if your lucky enough to have sunny days, you will be glad you have it!

zest 4 travel

If you are heading into the interior or plan to do any hiking, these mosquito repellent patches are amazing. Just place on your clothing…bugs stay away!

zest 4 travel

Magnetic chip clips to keep papers organized…cabin walls are metal, so magnets will work.

zest 4 travel

Stonger magnetic hooks are very useful to hang up coats and hats. Keep the cabin organized!

zest 4 travel

I have found packing cubes to be really helpful….they keep items organized in your luggage and you can easily transfer them to drawers when unpacking onboard.

zest 4 travel

Compression packing cubes are also really helpful.

zest 4 travel

After sailing many times and finally having our luggage go missing due to luggage tags being torn off, we now use these reusable luggage tag holders . Amazon has holders for all cruise lines. These are for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

zest 4 travel

Many stores are not providing free bags with purchase in an effort to reduce waste. I take reusable grocery bags . Useful at home too.

zest 4 travel

Of course, this is a female list…just make the necessary adjustments for males.

I hope this list helps with your packing questions.  Check back and let me know if this was useful for you.  Or if you have any suggestions!

Thank you for the helpful list. We’ve been on many Caribbean cruises but our first Alaska cruise is in 4 weeks. I figure that anyone wearing BSU apparel must know what they are talking about (we live in Boise). Go Broncos! 🙂

Thank you Brenda! We also live in Boise and love our Broncos!! Glad the list was helpful…have a wonderful cruise.

thank you for a great list..Its’ our first Alaska trip…leave July 29th…can’t wait

Would you change anything for a 14 day Alaskan cruise?

Not really. Plan on doing laundry once onboard. I find it easier to lighter. If you find you need another outer layer, there are inexpensive jackets and sweatshirts in every port. Plus they make a great souvenir. Have a great cruise 🚢

“Nice image :)”

Howdy. Same for end of May cruise? Will over-the-shoe boots work? Thx.

Yes. Those will help if it rains and will save on packing Nothing worse than wet feet 😀

We leave May 19th, looking at general weather says it will be cold! Are they correct?

I would expect cooler temps but not cold. Layers are the most important thing and waterproof. May tends to be the driest month but best to be prepared. There will still be snow in the mountains but not likely in town unless they have a freak late storm

What type of over the shoe boots did you find?

I have not used those, have only commented that they would work. There are waterproof tennis shoes on the market now. Vessi.com has some…not cheap but they work.

The soles of the water shoe need to be thick and flexible to allow for easy portage if needed. This usually involves crossing rocky surfaces so a sole with traction and one that protects your feet is important.

Thanks my first cruise . So excited!

Thank you! I expect that list to be very helpful. How many days is that for, and is it land and sea or just sea?

I’ve used it for 7 day cruises and 14. Has been sufficient in both. We’ve done both cruise only and spending a few days exploring prior to boarding.

So happy that it will be useful for you! Have a great time….Alaska is amazing. 🙂

Get to know grüner veltliner, a versatile and delicious white wine

Plus, 5 delicious bottles to try, including one from Pennsylvania.

zest 4 travel

If you haven’t discovered grüner veltliner, Austria’s most famous wine, please pick up a bottle of it the next time you visit a wine shop. You may ignite a lifelong love affair.

Here are my five reasons to love grüner.

1. Grüner veltliner represents value at all price levels.

You can find delicious, quaffable grüner in liter bottles for under $15, or thrilling, complex grüner for $50 or more for a standard 750-ml bottle. Even those bottles on the higher end of the spectrum can rival much more expensive white burgundies in their depth and thrill factor.

For me, grüner’s signature is white flowers, such as jasmine and honeysuckle. Toss in rosehips, even talc for complexity. These flavors are followed by a spiciness from white pepper and a stony minerality that seems to give voice to the Earth itself. Texture ranges from supple, crystalline spring water to a zesty creaminess.

I’m not alone in my love for the grape. Karen MacNeil, author of “The Wine Bible,” says grüner veltliner “definitely deserves to get more attention from consumers than it does. With its creamy texture, vivid fruit flavors, splashes of minerals, echoes of lime zest, and above all, its subtle white pepperiness, great grüner veltliner is a showstopper.”

2. Grüner ages well.

Those liter bottles and simple grüners may be best within two years of the vintage, but higher examples, especially the single-vineyard bottlings (notable for the word Ried before the vineyard name), will reward your patience. About four or five years after the vintage, these wines begin to reveal their true expression, taking on extra depth and complexity. If you have a wine cellar, keep some top grüners back for a few years. Look for older vintages in restaurants — don’t talk yourself out of them with the mistaken idea that white wine must be consumed young.

3. Grüner is a chameleon.

If you’re ever caught in one of those awkward social situations where a wine geek traps you in a blind tasting, beware the grüner. Its flavors can be subtle and it reveals itself more by what it isn’t: It’s not as weighty as chardonnay, nor as grassy as sauvignon blanc. Riesling and albariño emphasize tree fruit flavors. Focus on grüner’s signature white flowers and white pepper to guide you.

4. Grüner is amazingly versatile with food.

Salads, asparagus and artichokes are considered wine killers, but grüner can stand up to them if the dressing isn’t too vinegary and the veggies aren’t overcooked. Grüner also pairs well with the complex spices of Middle Eastern or South Asian cuisines. If you’re an adventurous cook and wondering what wine will go with your dinner, consider grüner veltliner.

5. Grüner isn’t just Austrian anymore.

Historically, grüner veltliner has been associated with Austria and neighboring regions that used to be part of the Austrian empire. It isn’t ubiquitous around the world like chardonnay and sauvignon blanc, but it has made some impressive appearances. Several small California wineries make it, with my favorites being Fiddlehead, Carlisle, Field Recordings and Zocker. It’s in Oregon (Ribbon Ridge), New York (Dr. Konstantin Frank, Weis), Virginia (Blenheim), Maryland (Black Ankle, Loew) and Pennsylvania (Galen Glen). If you travel, look for grüner from Australia’s Adelaide Hills (Hahndorf Hill) and Canada’s Okanagan Valley (Culmina).

Here are some of my favorite Austrian producers of grüner veltliner, in alphabetical order, with some specific recommendations below: Alzinger, Anton Bauer, Bründlmayer, Domäne Wachau, Groiss, Hirsch, Knoll, Lenz Moser, Loimer, Markus Huber, Nigl, Nikolaihof, Paul D., Prager, Schloss Gobelsburg, Steininger, Tegernseerhof.

And here are 5 grüner recommendations to get you started.

GREAT VALUE

Paul d. grüner veltliner 2023.

Austria, $14 for 1 liter

Winemaker Paul Direder produces one of the best wine values available today in this liter format. This is grüner at its youthful best — refreshing and racy, seemingly revealing a new flavor with each sip. It should settle down with a few more months of bottle age, but why wait? Make this your house white for the summer. Certified vegan, sustainable. Alcohol by volume: 12 percent. Bottle weight: 425 grams (Light).

Imported by Select Wines . Distributed locally by Select Wines and Siema Wines .

Domäne Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel Terrassen 2022

Wachau, Austria, $19

Exuberant and on the fruity side for grüner, with apricot and peach blossom, accented with zesty citrus and peppery spice. Certified vegan, sustainable. ABV: 12.5 percent. BW: 430 grams (Light).

Imported by Gonzalez Byass USA . Distributed locally by Southern Glazer.

Galen Glen Grüner Veltliner 2022

Lehigh Valley, Pa., $20

Galen Glen has become the standard-bearer for grüner veltliner on the U.S. East Coast. Okay, that may be a small sample size, but this wine is consistently delicious vintage after vintage. Its fruit leans to Bosc pear and Granny Smith apple with their blossoms, with a creamy consistency mid-palate and a peppery finish. As they say in social media, IYKYK. ABV: 12 percent. BW: 445 grams (Light).

Distributed locally by Siema Wines .

Weingut Müller Grossmann Grüner Veltliner Satz Viertel 2022

Kremstal, Austria, $20

Crisp apple, Asian pear and jasmine headline the first impression on this wine, backed up by white pepper on the finish. Certified sustainable. ABV: 12 percent. BW: 420 grams (Light).

Imported and distributed locally by Siema Wines .

Groiss Grüner Veltliner Braitenpuechtorff 2022

Weinvertel, Austria, $35

Ingrid Groiss’s wines showcase mineral intensity, as though they ground you to the Earth. She also offers a Weinvertel appellation wine ($22) and a reserve single-vineyard called Ried Pankraz ($65) — both are outstanding. ABV: 12.5 percent. BW: 425 grams (Light).

Imported by Vineyard Brands . Distributed locally by Elite Wines .

Prices are approximate. For availability, check Wine.com , Wine-searcher.com and the websites and social media feeds of the wineries, importers, distributors, and your favorite local wine store. You can also ask your local retailer to order wines from the distributors listed. Bottle weight is included, because this is the single most important contributor to wine’s carbon footprint . Have wine questions for Dave McIntyre? Send them to [email protected] .

★ Good: The wine delivers what it promises at a fair price. If it says chardonnay, it tastes like chardonnay.

★★ Excellent: A wine with character and added interest. May elevate your eyebrows at the first sip.

★★★ Extraordinary: An exciting wine that stands out from others in its class. Fist-pumping, table-thumping good.

★★★★ Sublime: Otherworldly. May have you thinking, “So this is what they were talking about.”
