  • Verdict If your van needs don't require long-distance travel, the E-Transit is a choice that's designed to eliminate your fuel bill.

What's New for 2022?

The 2022 E-Transit is a new nameplate for the Ford lineup. The E-Transit will serve as a third all-electric offering from Ford, sitting alongside the Mustang Mach-E SUV and the F-150 Lightning pickup truck.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Ford E-Transit starts at $47,690 and goes up to $51,690 depending on the trim and options.

The cheapest version of the E-Transit is the Cutaway style which lacks a rear cargo area and is offered to custom fitters. The better way to go for most consumers will be the cargo-van body style.

EV Motor, Power, and Performance

A single electric motor pumps out 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque; the E-Transit employs a rear-wheel-drive setup; all-wheel drive is not available. Ford hasn't released any zero-to-60-mph time estimates, but we expect the E-Transit to offer perky acceleration, at least when unladen. The company does say that the E-Transit's suspension system has been revised from the gasoline-powered Transit's to improve handling. When we get a chance to test-drive the E-Transit, we'll report our driving impressions here.

Towing and Payload Capacity

A towing capacity for the E-Transit is unknown for now, but Ford says the maximum payload for the cargo van should be close to 3800 pounds. Special cutaway models—also known as chassis-cabs, which are converted by fleets into box trucks, ambulances, and moving vans—could offer payload ratings as high as 4290 pounds.

Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The E-Transit's battery pack is a 68.0-kWh unit that's good for up to 126 miles of driving per charge, Ford says. The pack can be recharged using either AC power outlets or via a DC fast charging station. Ford will provide a mobile charger that can be used to charge the E-Transit at home and will also offer a more powerful charging station that can be installed in a buyer's garage. Otherwise, drivers can re-juice at public charging stations.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EPA hasn't released any estimates for the E-Transit's fuel economy. When we get the chance to test the E-Transit for ourselves, we'll subject it to our 75-mph highway fuel economy test and update this story with MPGe and driving-range results. For more information about the E-Transit's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website .

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The E-Transit will be offered solely as a cargo van with seats for just two. As a workhorse, the E-Transit's cabin is utilitarian, with rubberized flooring, durable plastic trim, and cloth seat upholstery. Both standard-height and high-roof models are offered, as well as normal and extended-wheelbase bodies. Cargo space will be plentiful no matter which body style is chosen, but the extended-wheelbase model with the high roof offers more than 487 cubic feet of cargo room.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All models of the E-Transit will come standard with a 12.0-inch infotainment system which dwarfs the 4.0-inch display in the regular Transit. It's even larger and more sophisticated than the regular Transit's optional 8.0-inch display as it runs Ford's latest Sync 4 operating system . An onboard 4G LTE modem provides a Wi-Fi hotspot and also connectivity features for fleet managers, including vehicle telematics. The infotainment system is capable of receiving over-the-air updates.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The E-Transit comes standard with a suite of driver-assistance features called Co-Pilot360 with more advanced driver-aids available as options. For more information about the E-Transit's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

  • Standard automated emergency braking
  • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
  • Available adaptive cruise control with traffic sign recognition

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Ford's standard warranty package is fairly basic and falls in line with the industry norm. The E-Transit offers an eight-year/100,000 mile warranty on its battery components, but Ford doesn't offer any complimentary scheduled maintenance plans.

  • Limited warranty covers three years or 36,000 miles
  • Powertrain warranty covers five years or 60,000 miles
  • Battery components warranty covers eight years or 100,000 miles
  • No complimentary scheduled maintenance

As personal vehicles begin to transition more and more to electric, so will commercial vehicles. Many big names in the commercial or business sectors have added electric vehicles to their fleet for last-mile delivery services, including Amazon, IKEA, PepsiCo, and even the United States Postal Service.

In order to help businesses make this green transition Ford introduced an electric version of its popular cargo van. The all-electric 2022 E-Transit is on sale now and is the third all-electric offering from the brand.

2022 Ford E-Transit van models

Models & Pricing

The 2022 Ford E-Transit is the first of two all-electric vehicles purpose-built for Ford Pro commercial customers in 2022. It features a steel unibody construction and is the only all-electric cargo van from a full-line automaker.

Buyers can choose from three roof heights and three body lengths on the cargo van model, just like the gas-powered version. There is also a cutaway version and a chassis cab version, for a total of three models with eight possible configurations.

The chassis cab and cutaway models can be further customized with the addition of vocational bodies. The cargo van model can be customized with equipment like ladder racks and interior bulkhead and storage solutions.

The E-Transit starts at $47,990 for the cutaway version, $48,520 for the chassis cab model and $51,880 for the cargo van version.

Driving Range & Battery

Ford leveraged more than 30 million miles of Ford Pro Telematics data to calculate the average daily driving range for commercial vans in the United States – 74 miles. Armed with that data, Ford designed an electric cargo van that boasts an anticipated range of 126 miles (Cargo Van low-roof models).

The fully electric powertrain features a single-speed transmission and a rear-wheel-drive electric motor that produces 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. The E-Transit’s 68-kWh liquid-cooled battery pack is located underneath the vehicle body to allow for the maximum amount of cargo space inside the van.

The heavy-duty independent rear-wheel drive suspension system was specifically created to help improve traction and provide a smoother ride when you have the maximum payload.

2022 Ford E-Transit charging at home

Charging at Home

The E-Transit offers a variety of charging solutions for charging at home. The Ford Mobile Charger, which is included with the purchase of the vehicle, can use either a standard home 120V outlet for three miles of range per charging hour, or a 240V outlet for 20 miles of range per charging hour. Using the 240V outlet will charge the E-Transit from 0-100% in about 11 hours.

To maximize your charge at home, customers can purchase the Ford Connected Charge Station with up to 48 amps of charging power. The Station offers the fastest Level 2 charge for the E-Transit with 15 miles per charging hour. Wi-Fi can be used for remote access control capabilities.

Charging on the Go

Ford connects its electric vehicle drivers to the BlueOval Charge Network, which has more than 19,500 charging stations with 63,000 plugs and growing.

Using 115 kW DC fast charging, the E-Transit can charge from approximately 15% to 80% in 34 minutes. Ford also offers central billing for public charging, providing customers with access to the network without needing to download multiple apps for different charging providers.

Using the "Power My Trip" feature on the FordPass app, you can see which charging stations are available and the cost to charge.

Interior Features

To make the transition from gasoline to electric easier, Ford ensured that the E-Transit has the same interior cargo dimensions and most of the same mounting points as the Transit. Buyers can also order the E-Transit directly from the factory with work-ready accessories such as bulkheads and shelving.

E-Transit owners are also able to work with the approximately 300 qualified upfitters in the U.S., including 13 that are located within 30 miles of the plant in Kansas City, Mo., where the E-Transit is assembled.

The E-Transit has a functional interior featuring a center console with an integrated rotary shifter. There is plenty of head- and legroom, and users have the ability to walk through the van.

Onboard Power

The Ford E-Transit isn't just a delivery van, it's a vehicle meant for all commercial purposes, including jobs that require power. The optional Pro Power Onboard2 provides up to 2.4 kilowatts of power, eliminating the need for a generator. It's enough to charge and power equipment needed on job sites, including power tools such as saws, drills and jackhammers, as well as laptops, scanners and tablets.

The Power Onboard2 works while the vehicle is being driven, making it easy to keep tools powered from job to job.

Ford offers its Ford Pro E-Telematics complimentary for three years on the E-Transit. To help maximize battery life, drivers are able to use this service to set climate control to a desired temperature within the cabin while the vehicle is still plugged in. Additionally, users can use this platform to pay for public charging centrally and to reimburse employees for home charging.

While available as a standalone feature, Ford Pro E-Telematics also integrates with Ford Pro Telematics, allowing a mixed fleet of electric vehicles with standard internal combustion vehicles. The entire fleet can be managed via the same dashboard. In a smart move by Ford, the program is also compatible with vehicles made by other manufacturers using a plug-in device. This allows companies to manage an entire fleet of mixed vehicles from the Ford Pro application.

The Ford E-Transit comes standard with safety features including lane keep assist and pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. Available features that do not come standard include blind spot monitoring, reverse emergency braking and a 360-degree camera.

Additionally, the E-Transit works with Ford Pro Intelligence In-Vehicle Coaching for real-time driver coaching delivered through the SYNC 4 voice assistant. If a driver exceeds a speed limit, leaves the vehicle on while parked, doesn't fasten a seatbelt, rapidly accelerates or brakes harshly, they will receive an in-vehicle audio message that asks them to correct their behavior.

Fleet managers can receive a driver score for individual drivers to help identify drivers who may require additional training.

The E-Transit also comes with Ford Co-Pilot360 technology, which includes available adaptive cruise control with speed sign recognition and intelligent speed assist.

Additional Technology

The E-Transit comes with Ford's SYNC 4 communications and entertainment technology. This includes a standard 12-inch touch screen, enhanced voice recognition and available built-in navigation. SYNC features and E-Transit software are kept up-to-date with Ford Power-Up Software Updates without a trip to the dealership.

Subscription services such as Ford Pro E-Telematics can be accessed by activating the E-Transit van’s standard 4G LTE modem.

Additionally, to help improve energy usage, automatic engine idle shutdown services with Ford's Smart Acceleration Truncation are available on the E-Transit. This can help fleet managers improve driver behavior by limiting acceleration speeds based on auto calculations of the payload.

Ford's Electric Future

Ford's E-Transit is part of a more than $30 billion investment in electrification through 2025. Ford already offers the all-electric Mustang Mach-E , and the all-electric F-150 Lightning recently began production.

Ford's ultimate goal is to achieve carbon neutrality globally by 2050. It is working to reduce CO2 emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and with the state of California for stronger vehicle greenhouse gas standards.

As cities and countries around the world pledge to reduce emissions, Ford is dedicated to making sure the commercial side of the automotive industry doesn't get left behind. The E-Transit helps move toward that future while working alongside existing gas and diesel fleets.

2022 Ford E-Transit first drive review: Meet the new boss, same as the old boss, now electric

We readily admit that the hubbub around Ford’s electrification plans is focused around the upcoming F-150 Lighting. As the first mass market electric pickup, it’s obvious it’d be getting the attention. But when it comes to mass market electrification, Ford is hitting a different product first.

That product? Transit.

Part of a larger consolidation of all of Ford’s commercial interests under one roof, the 2022 E-Transit is here to electrify everyone’s van needs — from last mile deliveries to limos — in an effort to lower carbon emissions, save the environment, and to ultimately lower operating costs for fleet managers.

That’s why we’re in Sonoma County, California. We’re here to drive the all new E-Transit as well as take a bigger look at Ford’s electrification and Ford Pro plans. While we’ll talk more about that effort in future articles, this story is all about the E-Transit.

The E-Transit is a Transit with an electric motor and battery pack. The battery has a usable capacity of 68 kWh and can be charged by either 11 kW level 2 AC charging, or up to 115 kW DC fast charging.

The battery pack is positioned between the outer frame rails, cradled to the subframe. This means there’s no loss of interior cargo volume, and also any type of Transit upfit will work on E-Transit.

Let me say that again.

Every single Transit upfit you can purchase today, or that you already have equipped to your gas-powered Transit will fit on E-Transit.

In fact, Ford is offering E-Transit in every single configuration that it currently offers in Transit. That means there are three different lengths and three different roof heights.

Don’t want a back at all? You can get the E-Transit in a chassis-cab and cutaway variants.

Power is made by 266 hp electric motor sending that and 317 lb-ft of torque to the rear axle. Cargo van capacities have payload up to 3,880 pounds. Range is up to 126 miles, if you opt for the short wheelbase, low roof version. For the opposite end of the spectrum, expect a range of 108 miles.

Being a Class 2B commercial vehicle, Ford is not obligated to EPA test Transit. However, Ford assures me that it used the light duty EPA test cycle when determining range, with weight included in the van to better real-world estimate range.

Speaking of range, Ford is adamant that for many buyers, 126 miles of range is enough. How do they know? Telematics.

Ford has equipped its vehicles with modems for several years now, and have analyzed over 30 million miles of data to determine how far people are driving their vans.

You might “feel” like you need more range than that, but you really don’t. That’s a key detail that helps keep the cost down and operating costs more manageable. Why have a bigger, heavier battery if you don’t need it?

The 2022 E-Transit comes standard with equipment you wouldn’t necessarily expect, including a massive 12-inch touch screen with wireless Apple Car Play and wireless Android Auto.

That screen also keeps track of charging, controls features like the available 2.4 kW Pro Power Onboard system, and can even direct you to a charging station if you are in need.

Autonomous emergency braking and lane centering comes standard along with automatic high beam headlights, and buyers can choose to upgrade to a full adaptive cruise control suite, and traffic sign recognition. An available 360-degree camera makes maneuvering the very large van much easier.

During our test drive I was able to test that out and the turning circle as I accidentally took a wrong turn. When you’re in the longest version of the van, with no rearview mirror inside the cab, visibility can be a bit limited.

For old hats, I’m sure it’s a piece of cake. I, however, was glad to have the extra cameras and sensors to help prevent me from crashing over some expensive grape vines.

That’s why this driver assistance stuff is so great. It helps prevent crashes, which of course helps save lives, but it also helps reduce downtime. And for drivers who are new, it puts them at ease when driving, reducing stress which reduces mistakes.

When it comes to actual driving impressions I must say that it drives exactly like a Transit. That’s a good thing. There’s very little learning curve to going from gasoline to electric.

Acceleration is brisk enough, for a van, and the steering is light without being too light. Our test vans all had 1,000 pounds of rubber mats in the rear, which of course helped ride quality, but handling was still pretty great all things considered.

The seats are comfortable and it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position. The roof is also high up, meaning even the Yao Ming-est of drivers will be able to drive comfortably.

You could spend hours behind the wheel and be perfectly happy.

Adding to that happiest is the lack of noise. Depending on upfit, you might hear some creaks and rattles, but you won’t hear a motor humming away. It’s also freakishly quiet for a commercial van, and might take some time to get used to for seasoned drivers.

But the quietness is the point, in many cases. Running on electricity only means that operators won’t be subject to noise restrictions that might be in place. The silent onboard generator means work can still happen when the gas powered equipment has to go home.

The E-Transit is likely going to be the cleverest tool in your toolbox.

So how much does it all cost? Well, for a base, cutaway van, expect to shell out $44,990 with delivery. The cargo van variety starts at $48,880. Pricing heads up from there, with top end models in the $60,000 range.

That’s all before a federal tax incentive, plus any state or local incentives that might be out there.

To help figure out your overall cost, you should reach out to your nearest Ford Pro retailer because they’ll have all the information you need, including specific pricing for your needs, and will help set up charging infrastructure and telematics solutions for you. Ford’s making a concerted effort to be a trusted adviser throughout the entire process.

The 2022 E-Transit won’t be for everyone, but it’s for more people than you might originally think. If you like the Transit, you’ll like the E-Transit just as much. Clever packaging, smart details, and a new support network makes it a compelling addition to your fleet.

2022 Ford E-Transit Debuts With 126 Mile Range, Up To 4,290 Pound Payload Capacity

Ford's all-electric van will arrive at dealers next year

2 el ford transit journey

After teasing its arrival earlier this week, the 2022 Ford E-Transit has officially debuted as a pure electric option for commercial fleets. With a 67-kWh battery pack and 126 miles of range (in its low-roof cargo variant), Ford says this van offers the right amount of range and flexibility for most fleet needs. Perhaps more importantly than the range, however, is the price. When it goes on sale in late 2021, the price should start under $45,000. With available EV credits, that means it should work out to the same price or less than the standard Transit .

Underneath, the 2022 Ford E-Transit packs a single electric motor with 266 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. The van also supports 115 kW DC fast charging, replenishing about 45 miles of range in 15 minutes. On a 240-volt outlet, fully charging the E-Transit takes about 12 hours, while Ford’s Connected Charge Station is slightly faster at 15 miles per hour.

2 el ford transit journey

2022 Ford E-Transit capability and tech

Speaking of charging, the 2022 Ford E-Transit does offer an optional onboard inverter, like the new F-150. The Pro Power system here provides 2.4 kilowatts of power, allowing fleet customers to use equipment from belt sanders to circular saws on the job site. As with other Ford vehicles, the van also houses a standard 4G LTE modem for vehicle data and fleet management services. Remote features like pre-conditioning to and charging reports for fleet managers are also available.

The 2022 Ford E-Transit doesn’t compromise on capability, even with the electric powertrain. Cargo volume for the high-roof, long-wheelbase cargo van remains the same as the conventional van at 487.3 cubic feet. Up and down the range, loading space remains consistent with that of the gasoline-powered Transits. Ford says the van’s maximum payload will fall in the 3,800 pound range, while cutaway versions get up to 4,290 pounds.

2 el ford transit journey

When it goes on sale, the 2022 Ford E-Transit will arrive with the same three roof heights and length options as the conventional model. It’s also available in cargo, cutaway and chassis cab variants, though no passenger version is available at launch.

Update: A previous version of this article referred to the E-Transit’s onboard inverter as a “generator”. That is how Ford terms it, but it is not a gasoline-powered generator as the name would imply. It runs off the E-Transit’s battery pack.

  • Ford has also increased AC charging speeds from 11 kW to 22 kW and DC speeds from 115 kW to 180 kW.
  • The new E-Transit extended range can travel up to 250 miles on a single charge.
  • No less than 19 different E-Transit variants are offered in Europe.

Just six weeks after the U.S.-spec Ford E-Transit was updated for 2024, the carmaker has rolled out similar updates to the large electric van in Europe. As it did in the U.S., Ford has boosted the van’s range with a new battery pack and will start customer deliveries in 2025.

The new battery, with 89 kWh of usable capacity, comes standard in the E-Transit extended range model. This new battery boosts Europe’s best-selling large electric van range up to 402 km (250 miles), a significant 28% jump over the standard range model. Ford says it has designed the extended range model for fleets operating in rural regions, colder climates, and near routes with lots of highway driving.

Buyers won’t just be able to enjoy improved range with the new E-Transit but also quicker charging. The extended range model’s AC charge capability has been increased from 11 kW to 22 kW, allowing the van to fully charge in less than six hours. The van’s DC fast charging capabilities have also been boosted from 115 kW to 180 kW, meaning a 10-minute charge can add up to 116 km (72 miles) of range. Topping the battery up from 10-80% also takes just 28 minutes.

Ford has also fitted a heat pump as standard on the extended range model that promises to heat the cabin more efficiently in cold conditions.

The E-Transit extended range comes with all of the same other features as the rest of the 2024 line-up. This includes a 5G modem as standard, wireless software updates, an Alexa built-in AI assistant, and Delivery Assist technology that claims to help save up to 20 seconds per stop.

All told, European shoppers have 19 E-Transit variants to choose from, including vans and chassis cab variants. The Ford Pro Power Onboard system can also be installed, allowing 2.3 kW of power from the battery pack to be used to power tools and other equipment. For 2024, Ford has also introduced two-year/unlimited distance service intervals.

An important new addition to the range is a factory-supported electric minibus conversion for the E-Transit. This version has been designed to suit taxi companies, schools, and local authorities and can seat up to 15 people. It is converted in Turkey and will be available directly from Ford dealers.
