Is Athens Worth Visiting?

Athens is definitely worth visiting! My expectations for Athens were pretty low prior to visiting. Over the years I’ve read so many terrible reviews of the city: that it’s dirty, crowded, and not worth it. While visiting I found myself wondering why people say it’s a dirty city. It’s lived in, there’s street art, but these aren’t bad things. I found Athens had a lot of life. It was a pleasure to explore, the food is fantastic, and I loved being able to visit the Acropolis.

I definitely recommend Athens and I would visit again. I visited Athens and Crete and it was nice to be able to contrast the mainland with the islands.

When to Visit Athens?

I visited Athens at the end of May and found the weather to be perfect and the crowds quite manageable. I recommend visiting Athens in March to May or September to November to get warm sunny weather. From June to August in Athens you will have a lot more crowds at the Acropolis and unpleasantly hot weather. During the summer there is the risk of the Acropolis being closed due to heat.

How Many Days in Athens?

I would budget two full days in Athens to see the sights and two more days to explore around the city as day trips or side trips for four days total. I think four days in Athens is the perfect amount to see the city and nearby sights as well.

Where to Stay in Athens?

In Athens, I recommend staying around the Plaka, Syntagma, or Monastiraki neighbourhood. The Plaka is at the center of the historic area of Athens and is in easy walk to the main sights and lots of restaurants. The Syntagma neighbourhood is also very close walking distance to everything. It’s also near Syntagma Metro Station, which is a meeting spot for many tours and the metro line that connects the airport and ferry terminal. Monastiraki Square is an excellent place to stay as it is adjacent to the Plaka and has lots of nice streets to explore with many restaurant and hotel options. Whichever you choose, try to book early as hotels can get booked up and very expensive in peak times.

In Athens, I stayed at The Athenians Art Apartments and would happily stay again. The apartments are in an excellent location and are super comfortable and recently renovated.

Where to Eat in Athens?

Athens has a fantastic food scene. The first night there I joined a food tour , which was great for trying out many foods and getting an idea of how the city is and some history of their most famous foods. Other places I enjoyed in the city include: Vegan Beat – Delicious mushroom gyros and super affordable Athena’s Cook – Nice patio and delicious modern Greek style food Holy Llama – Vegan pastries, amazing croissants. Wish I could have tried more. Lukumades – Delicious Greek donuts served warm. My favourite is the pistachio. Baklavas – So many types of baklava here, chocolate, pistachio, walnut. All delicious.

4 Days in Athens Itinerary

This four-day itinerary for Athens is set up to maximize your time in the city and to nearby destinations. I flew into Athens from elsewhere in Europe so I didn’t have jetlag the first day of this trip. If you are getting off a trans-Atlantic flight, then the first day of this itinerary may feel a bit punishing.

I do recommend a rental car for the first two days of this itinerary. I booked with DiscoverCars and was very happy with the price and the ability to add insurance in advance. If you aren’t comfortable driving in Greece, there are day trip options to Delphi and Cape Sounion instead. For all your day trip options from Athens, check out my list of the best day trips from Athens .

Day 1: Hosios Loukas Monastery and Delphi

After arriving in Athens, pick up your rental car and drive towards Hosios Loukas Monastery . The monastery is a slight detour from Delphi but well worth it. The roads are well-maintained and easy to drive with rest stops with bathrooms and restaurants along the way.

Hosios Loukas Monastery is a 10th-century Byzantine UNESCO World Heritage Site. To visit, make sure you have shoulders covered and pants or a skirt that covers to your knees. Hosios Loukas is situated in a beautiful area with sweeping views of the mountains. I spent about 1.5 hours wandering around the different buildings. It was only 4 euros for entry to Hosios Loukas.

Hosios Loukas Monastery with mountains in the background. This UNESCO Heritage Site is an excellent stop on the way to Delphi when visiting Athens for four days.

Scenic Drive to Delphi

After Hosios Loukas Monastery, continue towards Delphi . This was some of the most scenic driving I did in Greece. There are a couple of places you can pull over to take in the view of the mountains.

Explore Delphi and Enjoy Greek Food

I arrived for my visit to Delphi around 4 pm and even though it was enough time to visit the Delphi Ancient Site, I decided to spend the evening wandering Delphi’s shops and enjoying my first meal in Greece. Check in to your hotel and then explore Delphi. I stayed at Pan Hotel and loved how convenient and affordable it was and the included breakfast. Fedriades Delphi Hotel is another excellent pick. Whichever hotel you choose, try to get a room with a panoramic view of the mountains and sea so you can have a front-row seat to beautiful sunsets.

I highly recommend Taverna Vakhos for food. It was easily my favourite place to eat on this itinerary. It does fill up so it’s worth it to make a reservation. The restaurant has views of the Gulf of Corinth and has excellent service with a complimentary baklava dessert.

Day 2: Delphi, Cape Sounion, and Athens

Start your day early with breakfast at the hotel and then pack up the car and drive to park near the Archeological Museum of Delphi . While it is walking distance from Delphi, you will be thankful to not have to walk extra once it gets warmer and it is on the way out of town anyways. Make sure you arrive early, I got the last parking spot around 8:15 AM.

You can purchase tickets at the Delphi Archeological Site which includes entry to the museum as well. If you would rather skip the ticket line, you can also purchase your Delphi tickets in advance . There is also a fountain to the right of the ticket booth where you can refill water bottles. The Delphi Archeological Site is all uphill and there is very little shade so make sure you are prepared for a couple of hours.

Theatre of Delphi with views of the mountains.

Delphi Archeological Site

At the Delphi Archeological Site , there are plenty of signs to help you understand what you are seeing and its historical significance. Delphi is the site where the oracle spoke to Apollo and was believed by ancient Greeks to be the centre of the world. It was an important religious site in the 6th century BCE.

Because of its religious significance, as you walk through Delphi you will walk through the ruins of many monuments that were donated by ancient Greek leaders to curry favour with the gods. Some of the most prominent features are the Temple of Apollo, the theatre, and the stadium.

Walking the Delphi Archeological Site felt as significant as the Acropolis in Athens and you can certainly see why ancient Greeks felt this site nestled in Mount Parnassus is so special. For me, Delphi was a highlight of my time in Greece and is definitely worth adding to your itinerary, even if you can only visit on a day trip from Athens .

Temple of Apollo ruins at Delphi on Mount Parnassus in Greece. Delphi is perfect as a side trip from Athens if you have four days in the capital of Greece

Archeological Museum of Delphi

After exploring the ruins, make a stop at the Archeological Museum of Delphi . It’s not a very large museum so it doesn’t take very long but there are some very important and interesting artifacts here. Perhaps the most famous are the Sphinx of Naxos, and the twins Cleobis and Biton.

A Greek sphinx on display in the Delphi Archeological Museum

Temple of Athena

If you have time, walk or drive down to the Temple of Athena , which has beautiful ruins of the Tholos of Delphi. Start your drive towards Athens, first stopping in the nearby town of Arachova to get some lunch. Arachova is a beautiful town and there is also a great lookout spot worth stopping just as you are leaving town.

Temple of Athena with views of Mount Parnassus in the background in Delphi, Greece

Cape Sounion and Temple of POseidon

From Arachova, it’s almost a three-hour drive to Cape Sounion so you will arrive in the late afternoon. The Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion is famous for the 5th-century white marble temple that looks out over the Aegean Sea. During the summer it costs 10 euros for entry which feels a bit expensive considering Delphi including the museum is only 12.

You don’t need very long to explore the site, perhaps an hour. You could try to time it out to be there for sunset if you are okay with arriving in Athens quite late. If you are traveling without a car, a sunset tour to Cape Sounion is an excellent option.

The Temple of Poseidon on an overcast day with the sea behind it. This Temple to the God of the Sea is found near Sounion, Greece and is a popular destination when visiting Athens for four days.

Check-in To Athens Hotel

After Sounion, drop your car off at the airport and head into Athens. I found the metro was very convenient, especially because the hotel I booked was very close to Syntagma metro station , which is right on the metro line that serves both the airport and ferry terminal. I highly recommend The Athenians Art Apartments . The location is perfect for exploring Athens as everything was easy walking distance on foot. The rooms were newly renovated and had tons of space, a kitchenette, and were very comfortable and quiet.

Day 3: Acropolis, Ancient Agora, and Food Tour Tour

Today starts with a visit to Athen’s most famous site, the Acropolis ! I recommend buying your ticket in advance to skip the ticket line. Unfortunately, you still have to wait in the entry line to go through security. A combo ticket for the Acropolis is worth it as it allows you entry to six other sites over five days.

If you can, try to be at the Acropolis at 8 AM, right when it opens. I went up the Acropolis from the side entrance on the south side ( on the map here ) so I could walk past other interesting sights before seeing the Acropolis and exiting from the main entrance. I left the Acropolis around 10:30 AM and by then there were massive line-ups both at the ticket booth and at entry. Honestly, even by mid-morning it was starting to look and feel like a conveyer belt of people going through the Acropolis so getting here early really is worth it.

View of the Propylaia, monumental ceremonial entrance to the Acropolis from Areopagus Hill during midmorning with lots of people.

The Acropolis is completely exposed to the sun so make sure to be prepared. If you visit during a heat wave, the Acropolis may be temporarily closed if it’s around 40°C. There is a water fountain near the bathrooms here, and it’s the only place I saw for drinks on the Acropolis. I recommend packing tissues as well as the bathrooms were not stocked with toilet paper when I visited.

Theatre of Dionysis on the slopes of the Acropolis. This is an easy place to visit if you are going to the Acropolis as it is seen on the walk up and is a must visit if you are going to be spending time in Athens.

At the Acropolis, you first will go by the Theatre of Dionysus before walking up the stairs surrounded by columns through the Propylaia (ceremonial gateway) and next to the Temple of Athena Nike . The entrance to the Acropolis felt grand and was a highlight for me. Even though the Acropolis is ancient, there has been a lot of restoration happening and the restoration of the Temple of Athena Nike was completed in 2010. The Parthenon is the main temple that the Acropolis is known for and unfortunately, you can only view it from the outside. The Parthenon was heavily damaged during the 1687 Siege of the Acropolis by the Venetians. Even though it was restored, many collonades were put together wrongly so since 1975 restoration has been conducted here to put everything back in its rightful place. Having been around since 495-429 BCE, the Parthenon has been through a lot.

After exploring all the sites on the Acropolis head down. You can go up Areopagus Hill next to the exit to get views of the Acropolis as well.

The Parthenon in Athens, Greece is one of the best places to include on your four days in Athens itinerary.

Ancient Agora

Head towards the Ancient Agora . If you bought a combo ticket then entry is included. I had a terrible time finding the entry for it as it looks like there is an entry close to the Acropolis but when I visited, it was closed off. Google Maps is not your friend here as it tries to take you on walking paths that are fenced off. Entry is off of Adrianoy Street and when choosing walking directions, avoid green walking paths that are in the fenced-in Ancient Agora site.

There is much to explore at the Ancient Agora including the Temple of Hephaestus and Stoa of Attalos . If you visited the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion, you might note a similar style with the Temple of Hephaestus as both are thought to be designed by the same architect. The Stoa of Attalos contains a small museum containing Athenian artifacts as well. One of my favourite parts of the Stoa of Attalos was going to the top floor to get a view over the Agora.

You can easily spend an hour or two exploring the Ancient Agora as there are many ruins and monuments scattered around the site.

View of in the Temple of Hephaestus ancient Greek agora of Athens. This is the perfect thing to include on your first day in Athens whether you are visiting for 1, 2, 3, or 4 days to Athens.

Athens Food Tour

After a busy morning exploring Athens, grab some lunch, Vegan Beat has yummy mushroom gyros, and relax at the hotel before joining a food tour .

I went on an Athens street food tour that left from nearby Syntagma Square. The tour was fantastic. There were vegetarian and meat options at every stop and it was a great way to learn about Athens while tasting some of the food Greece is known for like spanokopitas, Greek pizza, loukoumades (Greek donuts!), and of course, gyros. Every stop had great food and it was a great way to get to try a variety of foods, including things I’d never heard of before like mastica ice cream. It was honestly the highlight of Athens for me and I have a full guide to the Athens food tour here .

Day 4: Exploring Athens

On your second full day in Athens, it’s the perfect time to explore the city with no time pressures.

Athens Spice and Food Markets

I started the day by exploring the spice markets of Evripidou Street as well as the central market. It’s an interesting area to explore even if you aren’t buying anything. The spice markets truly sell everything you could think of and it had me wishing I had more luggage space. It’s a good spot to find mastic if you want to take pure mastic home. I was able to purchase cinnamon sticks and licorice root at the spice markets. There are also shops that sell every kind of cured meat and olives.

In the Central Market, you have to be prepared for the open butchering of meat. A walk-through here will have you witness to many men with giant cleavers prepping meat for sale.

I followed it up by getting different baklavas at Baklavas , which has excellent baklava and is very close to Syntagma Square.

Dried red and pink roses, oranges, blood oranges, lemons, grapefruits, pineapple, and two types of dried lavender in the spice markets of Athens, Greece.

National Gardens

After lunch, walk through the National Gardens next to Syntagma Square. The gardens have lots of nice features to explore including the Byzantine chapel. Zappeion Hall is at one end of the gardens and is right next to an alley of jacaranda trees that look beautiful during late spring when they are covered in purple flowers. There are also some parrot nests in the pine trees that house some very noisy parakeets.

Temple of Olympian Zeus and Panathenaic Stadium

Walk to the nearby Temple of Olympian Zeus , which is included with the Acropolis combo ticket . It’s a quick site to explore but has a historic temple and great views of the Acropolis. A 10-minute walk down the hill from the Temple of Olympian Zeus is Panathenaic Stadium . This is the site of the first modern Olympic Games. You can get a good view of the stadium from outside or pay the 10 euros entry to tour the stadium. I skipped entering the stadium because I wanted to get out of the sun but if you do visit, you will be in the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.

The Panathenaic Stadium where the first modern Olympic games were held with Olympic and Greek flags flying in front of it on a sunny day

Acropolis Museum and Plaka

After visiting the stadium, walk by Hadrian’s Arch towards the Acropolis Museum . I didn’t tour the museum as I was feeling a bit ancient-Greeced out but if you are a history buff then it’s a good time for a visit. Unfortunately, the museum isn’t included with any of the Acropolis ticket combos so you do have to pay extra.

Explore the Plaka neighbourhood and grab some dinner. The Plaka is the neighbourhood that is at the base of the Acropolis and it has very charming tiny streets to explore. Many streets are pedestrian-only and have lovely flowers and cute restaurants. It can get very crowded here, however. It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs, I especially loved the olive wood shop that sold everything from cutting boards to utensils and decorations.

A couple walks in the streets of the Plaka near the Acropolis with colorful bougainvillea flowers overhead. This neighbourhood is perfect to walk through early morning while visiting Athens for four days.

Watch the Sunset with Views of the Acropolis

Just as the sun was starting to set I went up Philopappos Hill to get some views of the Acropolis at sunset. While there are amazing views, it’s unsafe to be there after dark and muggings have been reported. The path is also not lit up and quite uneven so it would be difficult to do in the dark. I recommend visiting it before dark though because the 360° views of Athens are stunning.

Areopagus Hill is the perfect place to get views of the Acropolis at sunset, although it is very popular and can be crowded. The sun doesn’t set behind the Acropolis but you will get nice views of the Acropolis lighting up at night.

View of the Acropolis lit up at night from Areopagus Hill. This is an excellent place to watch the sunset in Athens while visiting.

Athens in Four Days Itinerary

I was very happy with spending four days in Athens. I had debated about leaving it out because of hearing so many bad things about Athens but I’m so happy I didn’t. Between the side trip to Delphi, Acropolis, and being a great city to wander around, Athens makes the perfect place to visit before or after a trip to the Greek Islands.

4 Days In Athens, Greece: The Perfect First-Time Itinerary

' data-src=

Sharing is caring!

Athens is a wonderful city with an incredible history. Although quite often used as a pit stop on the way to the Greek Islands, there are so many things to do in the city. You could easily spend 3 or 4 days in Athens (or even more than that).

We spent exactly four days in Athens and thought it was the perfect amount of time to get a feel for the city as well as explore the surroundings.

Steeped in culture and history, Athens is a bustling city. It has all the modern conveniences of any other major European city, but it also has a rustic charm and history that few cities can match.

This is the 4-day Athens itinerary that we followed when we visited the city. I’ve also included what to do, where to stay, a few important travel tips, and prices of all of Athens’ top attractions.

There are also several wonderful day trips from Athens where you can view more of Greece’s amazing sights.

My favourite travel resources for Athens

✅ This is the hotel we stayed at during our time there ✅ D on’t miss the Acropolis and y ou’ll love a day trip to Delphi . ✅ To see the best of Athens, I highly recommend hiring a car .

How to Spend 4 Days in Athens – The Perfect 4-day Itinerary

So, if you’re wondering about the best way to see Athens in 4 days, you’re in the right place.

4 day tours from athens

It’s a city perfect for all types of travellers and these are the best things to add to your Athens itinerary for four unbeatable days in the city.

Day 1 – Athens Must-See Sights

On our first day of this Athens in 4 days itinerary, we’ll cross off all of the city’s major sights and historical landmarks.

9:00 – Acropolis Museum

Cost : €10 per adult

Start your first day at the Acropolis Museum. This place is full of ancient ruins and all of Athens’ most famous archaeological treasures. It’s a great place to discover the history and culture of Athens before you visit the Acropolis.

The Acropolis Museum is a must see during a 4 day Athens itinerary

Architect Bernard Tschumi designed this fantastic museum and it replicates all five levels of Ancient Greece’s Acropolis. Inside, you’ll find many items that were discovered during recent archaeological digs such as giant statues, friezes, pottery, jewellery, and stone slabs with inscriptions found around the Acropolis itself.

✅ Book tickets for the Acropolis Museum

11:30 – The Acropolis of Athens

Cost : €20 per adult in summer and €10 per adult in winter (Nov to March). You can also buy a combo ticket for €30 which includes entry to 6 sites.

Next, head to the city’s most iconic landmark. The Acropolis is a must-see during your 4 days in Athens – it’s probably the reason you’re in Athens in the first place, right?

It sits on top of a limestone hill in the centre of the city and is the most famous ancient site in all of Greece. It’s a great place for history buffs and you’ll get some fantastic views over Athens from up there too.

Queues can get quite long, so you can purchase your tickets online beforehand for faster entry.

The Acropolis of Athens is a must-see during 4 days in the city

I also definitely recommend buying the combination ticket .

Although this might seem expensive, it also includes entrance to the Ancient Agora, the Theatre of Dionysos, Kerameikos, Roman Agora, Tower of the Winds, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, so it’s pretty good value for money. It also lasts for 7 days, so more than enough for a long weekend in Athens.

✅ I recommend buying the Acropolis Combination Ticket!

12:00 – Parthenon

Cost : Included in the Acropolis ticket

Although it’s technically part of the Acropolis, the Parthenon is also worth mentioning separately. The temple was built in the fifth century BC. It became a symbol of power, patriotism, peace and democracy.

The Parthenon in Athens

The Parthenon is one of the most well-known ancient sites in Greece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a must-see in Athens.

13:00 – Odeon of Herodes Atticus

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is a reconstructed theatre located on the southwest slope of the Acropolis of Athens. Built in 161 AD, it is a colossal structure. It can accommodate over 6000 people and is still used for theatres and festivals today.

Odeon of Herodes Atticus

The Odeon is simply known by the locals as ‘Herodeon’. The amphitheatre-style seating has been cut into the limestone hillsides near the Acropolis, making it one of the most beautiful structures in Greece.

13:15 – Erechtheion

The Erechtheion is a temple on the north side of the Acropolis.

Me with the Erechtheion in Athens

.Mostly known for its six Ionic columns which form an entrance to the east, it was built in 421 BC. It has two porches or colonnades, each composed of four massive pillars. The temple was dedicated to Athens and Poseidon.

14:00 – Lunch

For our next stop, we’ll be heading down towards the Ancient Agora. There are some great little restaurants located along the street here which make a perfect stop for lunch. You’ll likely pass both locals and tourists sitting in the sunshine outside.

15:00 – The Ancient Agora

Cost : €8 per adult. It’s also included in the Acropolis Combo ticket.

Athen’s Ancient Agora is one of the oldest and most complete agoras from ancient Greece. It’s located to the northwest of the Acropolis and was used as an assembly place for the democratic government.

Ancient Agora

As well as being the centre of decision-making in Athens, the Agora was also the best place to see the city come alive as people gathered all around to hear the outcomes of the discussions. Surrounded by greenery, it’s a beautiful temple and one of the best things to see in Athens.

✅ Book tickets for the Ancient Agora

15:30 – The Temple of Hephaestus

Cost : Included in the Ancient Agora ticket.

The Temple of Hephaestus is an architectural goliath. Dedicated to Hephaestus, (the god of fire) and Athena, (the goddess of pottery and crafts), it’s one of the best-preserved temples in Athens today.

Athens Temple of Hephaestus

According to archaeologists, the temple was built around 450 B.C. It’s located northwest of the Ancient Agora, on top of Agoreos Koronos hill. The building is an example of typical Dorian architecture.

16:00 – Roman Agora

One of Athens’ oldest markets, the Roman Agora was once one of its busiest areas, full of street vendors selling everything under the sun.

Roman Agora

Not to be confused with the Ancient Agora, it was built in the 1st century BC and was mainly used as a marketplace for trading goods. There was also a selection of shops and stalls fringed by decorative columns and a central fountain.

The ruins are located north of the Acropolis and near the Monastiraki metro station.

16:30 – Roman Bath

Cost : Free

A rather unknown attraction, the Roman Bath in Athens is a little hard to find, but it’s worth the hunt and worth adding to your 4 day Athens itinerary.

Roman bath is onf ot eh unknown things to see during 4 days in Athens

The bath is a Roman Era thermal bath complex and one of the best-preserved examples in Greece.

17:00 – Temple of Ares

Cost : Included in the Ancient Agora ticket

The Temple of Ares is a must-see during your 4 days in Athens. The Temple is an important archaeological site located near the northern part of the Ancient Agora. If you travel from Syntagma Square on foot, it can be reached in around 20 minutes.

Originally built around the 5th century BC, it has been rebuilt several times since. When you visit make sure to take note of the stone sculptures that once lined the roofline – Zeus, Hera, Athena, Aphrodite, and Hermes which have all been beautifully restored.

17:30 – Kerameikos Archaeological Site

Cost : €8 per adult. It’s also included in the Acropolis Combo ticket

Kerameikos is one of the most important but least visited archaeological sights in Athens. It’s the cemetery of ancient Athens, used from around the 9th century BC until Roman times.

Athens cemetary

It features a large number of marble statues, remains of public buildings, funeral offerings, archways, and thousands of tombs. You might also see some wildlife – we saw some wild tortoises and parakeets here.

18:00 – Pnyx

One for history buffs who enjoy walking tours, have an interest in photography or love gorgeous Acropolis views, then head to Pnyx.

Acropolis views during 4 days in Athens

On a rocky outcrop overlooking the Acropolis, the Pnyx is a central hill that is just over 100 metres high in the centre of Athens. The site is in a large park and you can get some of the best views of the Acropolis from here, especially at sunset.

Day 2 – Day Trip to Delphi

For the second day of your 4 days in Athens, I recommend leaving the city for a day trip.

There are some wonderful day trips from Athens , but, if you’re into Greek history, Delphi is one of the best. The ancient city is the site of one of the most important temples dedicated to Apollo in Ancient Greece.

The ancient oracle at Delphi was said to be able to prophesize and give advice about life, death, war, marriage and more for all who sought it out. The Oracle is famous because its predictions were often scarily accurate.

Delphi day trip from Athens

Delphi was also said to be the centre of the world . According to the ancient Greeks, Zeus threw two eagles in opposite directions. They flew around the entire world and where they met (at Delphi) was the centre.

This day trip will take you on an adventure into history where you’ll see remnants of an old civilization with beautiful scenery along the way. You can even stop by the beautiful mountain town of Arachova which is just a short drive from Delphi.

How to get to Delphi

The easiest way to get from Athens to Delphi is by guided tour. We booked a tour through Get Your Guide . The tour was well-organized and the guide was knowledgeable which was a plus.

The other way to get there would be to hire a car . We did this for our Mycenae trip on day three of this Athens itinerary, and it was pretty easy to do. But more on that soon!

✅ I recommend this guided tour from Athens to Delphi

What to do in Delphi?

The tour will most likely take you to all the most famous spots in Delphi. This includes The Sacred Way, the Temple of Apollo, the Treasury of the Athenians, the Theatre, and the Stadion. But, your first stop will most likely be Tholos, the most photographed site that Delphi has to offer.

Cost : €12 per adult to enter the archaeological site and museum. The guided tour will cost around £40 which includes access to the archaeological sites and the museum.

Tholos is the best place to start because it’s the smallest site in Delphi. Built around 380 BC, Tholos is a circular ruin with 20 Doric columns on the exterior and a further 10 Corinthian columns on the interior. Only three of these columns are still standing though.

Tholos delphi

As well as the incredible history of this place, there are also some stunning views of the mountainous region surrounding Athens.

After this, you’ll follow The Sacred Way up and around the mountain until you get to all of the other sites…

The Temple of Apollo

The second most famous spot at Delphi is without a doubt, the Temple of Apollo. There is so much history here! Just walking through its ruins gives one an idea of how monumental this structure was back then. Plus, there are more breathtaking views.

Temple of Apollo, Delphi

This temple also houses another sight that is important for Athenians: The Omphalos which marks the centre point from which distances were measured on Earth.

Other sites within Delphi

After the Temple of Apollo, you’ll head on to the Treasury of the Athenians. This is where the wealth of Athens was once stored. It used to house war loot and offerings to Apollo.

Treasury in Delphi

The Theatre is next. With a history dating back to the 4th century, this astounding building had more than enough space for over 5,000 spectators. The impressive structure had 35 rows of stone benches and was built for musical contests at the Pythian Games (this was similar to the Olympic Games but on a smaller scale).

Beautiful historical sites in Delphi, one of the best day trips from Athens

Lastly, you’ll reach the Stadion, the heart of the Pythian Games . Athletic contests, sprints and relay races used to be held here. It is located 50 meters above the theatre, at the highest point of the site.

Stadium in Delphi

Don’t forget to explore the Museum of Delphi too. This museum houses a variety of exhibits such as sculptures, pottery and other treasures.

Travel back to Athens

After exploring Delphi, the tour might take you to a nearby restaurant for a bite to eat before returning to Athens. The journey will take about 2.5 hours, so you’ll usually get back in the evening.

Day 3 – Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplion

For day 3 of your 4 days in Athens, head to some more of the historical wonders surrounding Athens. This includes Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus and the charming town of Nafplion.

For this trip, we hired a car . You can also visit these places via guided tour , but we wanted to spend a little more time in Corinth than most of the tours allowed. So we opted for car hire.

The historic tombs in Corinth near Athens

It was pretty simple. We booked it online that night, picked it up in the morning, and off we went. Aside from the initial rather hectic journey out of Athens city centre, it was quite an easy drive.

✅ I recommend this guided tour of Corinth. Or, you can hire a car.

9:00 – Corinth

Our first stop on this little Greek road trip was Corinth. Located about a 1-hour drive from Athens, the city is divided into two sides, old and new. It’s also famous for its beautiful canal, which is our first stop.

9:15 – Corinth Canal

Corinth Canal is one of the most impressive engineering feats in antiquity and is also one of the oldest artificial seaways anywhere in the world. It’s 6.3 kilometres long, 23 meters wide, and eight meters deep.

The beautiful Corinth Canal near Athens

The incredible canal was dug by hand with wooden tools, a stone-faced rampant on both sides to prevent water from sloshing back out over the diggers when it rained, and an earthen dam at each end to keep rainwater flowing into the sea.

It took about ten years for enough dirt to be moved so that ships could travel between Athens and Corinth via this mighty manmade strait.

9:45 – Ancient Corinth

Cost : €8 per adult

Next, we headed to Ancient Corinth. The ruins of this city are like a ghost town (there weren’t many tourists there either), but it’s one of the most fascinating historical sites in Greece.

We parked up with our rental car and explored on foot, taking in all of the old ruins around us.

Ancient Corinth

The site has some incredible mosaics, statues, and buildings from the ancient city, complete with plaques explaining what each building used to be. Make sure you see the fascinating Doric Temple of Apollo too – the most important temple on the site.

There’s also a small archaeological museum on site that’s also worth a visit while you’re there.

11:00 – Acrocorinth

Cost : €6 per adult

Our final stop in Corinth was Acrocorinth.

Corinth Castle is one of the stops that's not included on the guided tour

After a rather terrifying drive up a steep, zig-zagging hill, we reached this imposing fortified castle. Climb all the way to the top for fantastic views across the Isthmus and the surrounding hills of the Peloponnese .

Corinth Castle from above

12:30 – Mycenae

Cost : €12 per adult

After Corinth, we headed on to Mycenae. This ancient site is a great addition to any 4 days in Athens itinerary. It has important historical significance as it was the capital of Agamemnon and home to the King of Argos. Many of the ruins here, revolve around his rule.

The ruins are well preserved and there is a small museum on-site with more information about Mycenae’s history. There’s plenty to do here for an hour or so, and this was about how long we stayed.

Mycenae

A few must-see sights in the archaeological site of Mycenae include the famous Lion’s Gate, the Treasury of Artemis and several ginormous tombs.

The Lion’s Gate is the entrance to the citadel. It was built around 1350 BC and is one of the best-preserved Mycenean masonries in history.

Lion's Gate

The Treasury of Artemis is the name given to a circular building that was built during the 12th century BC. It was used as a temple and is surrounded by two concentric rings of columns, one of which is made out of Lion’s heads.

Tombs in Mycenae

The Mycenean Tombs are massive structures that would have served an important function in Mycenean society.

15:00 – Nafplion

After exploring Mycenae, we drove a further 25 minutes to Nafplion. This was honestly one of my favourite places to visit in all of Greece .

Napflion is one of the best places to visit during 4 days in Athens

The former capital of Greece has the most beautiful harbour, as well as some incredible neoclassical architecture, a hilltop castle, and some picturesque bays.

The sunset over the bay in Napflion

You could spend hours here simply wandering the cobbled streets, window shopping at the cute little boutique stores and sipping on a coffee in one of the many cafés.

Cafe in Napflion

We went back here to eat after our next stop because we found a wonderful family-owned Greek taverna and the smells coming from it were mouth-watering. It was a good choice too as the food was traditional, locally sourced, and utterly delicious.

16:30 – Epidaurus

Our final stop of the day was Epidaurus. This small city is located on the Argolis Peninsula at the Saronic Gulf and a 30-minute drive from Nafplion.

Epidaurus is mostly famous for its impressive theatre, which, along with being a must-see on your Athens itinerary, was among the largest in ancient Greece. Even today, it’s one of the best-preserved theatres from this era.

add Epiduras to your Athens 4 day itinerary

It was constructed in the late 4th century BC, has 35 rows, and can seat an impressive 15,000 spectators. It also has some of the best acoustics of any theatre in ancient Greece.

Epidaurus is also home to the Sanctuary of Asclepius, which is a large healing centre. Evidence suggests this ancient site was used for both religious and medical purposes.

If you time this right, you should arrive at Epidaurus around sunset, where you’ll be treated to some stunning views of the sun setting over the theatre’s beautiful mountainous backdrop.

Head Back to Athens

Epidaurus marks the end of day 3 on this 4-day Athens itinerary and once we’d seen enough of this historical gem, we headed back to the car to make our way back to Athens.

The drive from here will take about 2 hours depending on traffic and will get you back in the late evening. We then jumped in the hot tub with a cold glass of wine!

Hot tub views during 4 days in Athens

Day 4 – Final Day in Athens

For your final day in Athens, explore some more of the city’s historical gems. This way, if you’re catching a flight home tonight, you’re not likely to get stuck hours from the airport in Delphi or Mycenae.

Even though this is a much more chilled-out day than the first, there are still plenty of things to see at the end of this long weekend in Athens.

10:00 – Panathenaic Stadium

Cost: €10 per adult

The Panathenaic Stadium is a monument to the first Olympics.

4 days in Athens

Loathed east of the Acropolis, it was the home of the first Olympic games and was also where the games were revived after a break of about 400 years.

Stadium is one of the top things to in 4 days in Athens

It is one of Athens’ most popular historic attractions and the only stadium in the world built entirely of marble.

11:00 – Zappeio Gardens

Athens has a few parks and gardens that are worth exploring and Zappeio is one of them. Located in the centre of Athens, within walking distance from the Acropolis, this garden is a great place to visit if you want a break from exploring museums and churches.

11:30 – The Temple of Olympian Zeus

Cost : €8 per person in summer, €4 per person in winter. This is also included in the Acropolis Combination ticket.

This is a must-see for anyone visiting Athens. One of the largest temples in ancient Athens, the Temple of Olympian Zeus is a temple dedicated to Zeus.

Temple of Zeus is one of the best things to see during 4 dyas in Athens

It stands at a height of 21m without its pedestal, making it one of the tallest temples in Ancient Greece.

12:15 – Hadrian’s Arch

Built in honour of the Roman emperor Hadrian, Hadrian’s Arch is a large arch of marble. The arch was made to celebrate his visit to Athens in 131 AD and makes for one of the best photo opportunities at any time day or night.

Hadrian's Arch in Athens

12:45 – Plaka

The old town is a must-see on your Athens itinerary. Plaka has some lovely restaurants with little side streets that are worth exploring. The best time to go for an evening stroll would be on Pronoia Street which often hosts live music performances.

Plake is one of the best places to visit during 4 days in Athens

One popular stop-off point is at a small restaurant called Smak which is a great budget food option selling delicious pizza and peinirli. It’s located off Ermou Street and you can eat here for less than €5 per person. This makes this a great place to stop for lunch.

13:00 – Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The place where the unknown soldier who died during the Greek War of Independence in 1831 is buried is called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

tomb of the unknown

The tomb was originally constructed to commemorate all those who fought and died for Greece. But after World War II it became a memorial for only one person as there were not any other known soldiers fighting at this time.

Top Tip: This is also a great time to have a wander around Syntagma Square. There are lots of great spots to grab a snack before we head to our next stop.

14:00 – Mount Lycabettus

For some of the best views in Athens, head to Mount Lycabettus.

4 days in Athens - the view from the top of Mount Lycabettus

The climb is worth it (although it will kill your legs), and the summit is 300 meters above sea level – the highest point in the city.

The church at the top of Mount Lycabettus in Athens

At the top of the hill, you’ll find a pretty little blue-and-white church and a wonderful viewing platform for gorgeous Greek panoramas.

16:00 – National Gardens

There really is something quite magical about walking through these gardens, there are lots of interesting places to see like the Byzantine chapel and neoclassic gardens.

Athens’ National Gardens is a 15.5-hectare public park in the centre of Athens (between Syntagma Square and the Panathenaic Stadium).

The park will give you some wonderful photo opportunities. There are beautiful bridges, winding pathways, small lakes, a duck pond and even a small zoo with goats, peacocks and chickens.

Top Tip : The Benaki Museum is also near here and well worth a visit if you have time.

17:00 – National Archaeological Museum

Cost : €12 per adult in summer. €6 per adult in winter.

This stop will depend on what time of year you’re visiting Athens due to the opening times of the museum. If you’re visiting in the summer months, it closes at 8pm, giving you plenty of time to explore. If you’re visiting in winter, however, it closes at 3:30pm meaning you won’t be able to visit.

But, if you want more information about ancient Greece then this is where you’ll find it. The National Archeological Museum has artefacts from some of the earliest human civilizations as well as many other displays for all ages.

This includes a fantastic section on Ancient Greek religion with statues, urns, and even mummy masks.

Artefacts in athens archeological museum

Home to over two million objects that date back as far as 700 BC, it’s a great addition to your 4 day Athens itinerary and an incredible resource for anyone interested in Ancient Greek culture.

Where to stay for 4 days in Athens

Athens is quite a BIG city. However, most people would rather stay close to the centre. This will put you within walking distance of many of Athens’s top attractions (like the Acropolis).

We stayed in the city centre in a little apartment called the Urban Link Residence and didn’t have to use public transport once. We just walked everywhere (except on the day we hired a car ), which saved a lot of money.

Plus, our apartment was fantastic. It had a comfortable living space, a huge bed, and a hot tub on the balcony overlooking the Acropolis. Perfect for relaxing in the evenings with a glass of wine.

The Urban Link Residence

However, if you don’t fancy staying in the centre, some of the other smaller areas are just as enticing. It is important to note how each part of Athens is different and consider this when deciding where to stay.

Urban Link, Athens

My favourite place to stay in Athens is located slightly outside the main neighbourhoods. Check out my guide below for my top tips!

✅ Discover the best places to stay in Athens

Here are a few other great places to stay during your trip to Athens.

One of the most beautiful neighbourhoods in Athens, Plaka is a must-see. It is full of authentic markets, narrow streets and colourful buildings. However, it can be quite busy in the summer so you may want to avoid this area if you’re looking for a quieter stay. Also, expect the prices to be a little higher than in other areas. Fos Residential Apartmen ts is a great choice here.

The best places to visit in Athens - the Acropolis view

Syntagma is another area to stay in Athens that will place you close to some of the best attractions. In fact, it’s considered THE centre of the city by the locals. You can easily walk the rest of Athens from here and it’s a great spot if you’re looking for something more lively.

Achilleas Hotel Athens is a great hotel in Syntagma. It’s close to all the action and has pleasantly decorated rooms.

Psyri is the perfect place to stay in Athens if you love nightlife. The area is home to many bars and clubs – including the wonderful bar and restaurant Klimataria . There’s always something happening at night, and you’re not likely to get bored no matter how long you stay.

One great hotel option here is the Ederlezi Boutique Hotel , which features a gorgeous rustic design and a cosy garden where you can relax during the evening.

Top Tip : To keep costs down, try staying near Monastiraki Square – one of Psyri’s neighbouring areas with slightly less foot traffic and cheaper prices! There’s a fantastic little flea market here as well!

Is Athens worth visiting?

If I were to give you one piece of advice if you’re considering visiting Greece, it would be – don’t skip Athens! This city is definitely worth visiting.

How to spend the perfect 4 days in Athens

Athens may not have the sunkissed white and blue of the most popular Greek islands. However, it does have some of Greece’s best historical sites, which are well worth exploring.

How many days in Athens?

How many days in Athens was something we wondered a lot before we booked our trip. 3 or 4 days is usually enough to explore the major sites. This should be enough time to get on a few day trips as well.

Athens is surrounded by gorgeous scenery and some of my favourite historical sites in the country are just outside the Greek capital.

Make sur to visit all the greaak temples while spending 4 days in Athens

Ultimately, the longer you have in Athens, the better. But, Athens in 4 days is usually a great amount of time to cross a lot off your bucket list.

Is 4 days in Athens cheap or expensive?

Athens is one of the places in Europe that you can explore on a budget . Many of the major sites are free to visit and you can get a decent meal for under €10. I highly recommend street food.

Greek Gyros

On certain days of the week or when there are public holidays, you can get even more discounts. We visited on a public holiday and got free access to the Acropolis!

However, it’s worth noting that not everywhere accepts debit cards, so it’s worth carrying cash on you when possible.

Final Thoughts on Spending 4 Days in Athens Greece

Overall, Athens is one of my favourite European cities . I believe that 4 days is the perfect amount of time to get a taste of what Athens and ancient Greece has to offer. I hope that this has given some great tips on how to spend 4 days in Athens.

It’s not easy deciding where to visit first as there are so many incredible things about this historic city… but hopefully, now you’ll be able to plan your trip accordingly 🙂

The Epic Four-Day Journey Through Greece's Timeless Wonders!

Prepare to step into a timeless realm as we journey through the wonders of Greece with Elite Tours - a tour that will ignite your passion for history and culture like never before. Our four-day adventure promises to unveil the secrets of this ancient land, with every moment filled with awe and excitement.

DAY 1: The Corinthian Quest

Rev your engines! Our adventure kicks off as we snake along the picturesque coastline of Corinth. Imagine the Aegean breeze ruffling your hair as we pull up to the marvel that is the Corinthian Canal. Fingers crossed, we might just catch a hulking ship navigating this engineering wonder. But let's not dally too long—Ancient Corinth beckons!

Step on hallowed ground where St. Paul once spoke to the Corinthians. As you wander among ruins kissed by Roman architectural flair, you'll encounter the Temple of Octavian and meander down the ancient Lechaion Way. Don’t miss the museum, a treasure trove of artful amphorae! Then, let's head for the hills—Acrocorinth awaits, hovering like an ancient guardian above the main city.

Our chariot winds through farmlands and charming hamlets. Apricot and olive trees stand as sentinels of the rich Peloponnesian soil. Next up, Ancient Nemea—the birthplace of ancient sporting glory—and Mycenae, where the echoes of Agamemnon still linger. End your day in Nafplio, where Venetian charm meets Greek sunshine. Lunch by the sea and a visit to the towering Palamidi Castle round out this jam-packed day.

DAY 2: The Oracle’s Odyssey

Strap in! We're making a beeline to Delphi, crossing the monumental Rio-Antirrio Bridge along the way. Take in vistas of idyllic islands and seaside villages as we cruise. But first, a pit stop at the quaint village of Galaxidi. Stretch those legs, and let’s savor authentic Greek coffee and pastries!

As the sun dips, we'll lay our heads at the charming Fedriades or Parnasos Hotel. Because tomorrow, Delphi—where the Oracle once whispered secrets to emperors and vagabonds alike—calls to us.

DAY 3: Delphi's Divine Mysteries

Gaze upon Athena Pronaia’s Temple as soon as you set foot in Delphi. You'll also spot the iconic Tholos monument and the Greek gymnasium—where athletes once flexed before the Pythian Games. Quench your historical thirst at the Castalian Spring, the Oracle's ancient cleansing spot, before ascending towards Apollo's sanctuary.

Your senses will be tingling as you traverse the Sacred Way—passing the marketplace, Athenian Treasury, and the Temple of Apollo. But we're not done yet! The ancient theater and the Pythian Games’ stadium await. And you can't leave without paying a visit to Delphi's exquisite museum. Lunch? A local taverna boasting vistas of an olive-tree-filled valley has got you covered. Then, it's wheels up towards Meteora!

Along the way, witness Amfissa’s legendary olive groves, climb the scenic mountain of Bralo, and feel the spirit of 300 Spartans at Thermopylae. Descend to Thessalikos Kambos—the breadbasket of Greece—before reaching Kalambaka, where you’ll settle into either the Iridanos or Meteoritis Hotel.

DAY 4: Ascending to Monastic Heavens

Monasteries, here we come! We're looking at 5 or 6 sky-high spiritual retreats. And remember, while bus tours may skimp and only show you two, we go for the whole celestial enchilada. After this heavenly tour, we'll share a final Greek meal before cruising back to Athens, with a pit stop to stretch those travel-weary legs.

So there it is, your four-day Greek odyssey in a nutshell. Pack your bags, bring your sense of wonder, and let's make some memories that even Zeus would envy!

Athens 4 Day Itinerary – Know Before You Go

Before you get going on your 4 day trip to Greece, here is some useful information that will help you plan. If you’re already in the city, then skip this section and jump straight to the full Athens itinerary.

Getting to Athens

Athens International Airport (ATH) is the best airport for your trip to Athens.

Getting to the city centre is easy with regular buses, the Airport Bus, metro, or taxis available. You can also book a private meet-and-greet transfer from Athens Airport to the city centre .

I used the shuttle bus when I arrived in Athens, and then tried out the metro on the return journey. Both were super easy and efficient. They both do the route between the airport and Syntagma Square in the centre of Athens in under an hour. I’d recommend using either.

Getting around Athens is really easy.

Naturally, my favourite way to explore a city is on foot. If you’re anywhere around the historic centre, this is by far the best way to get around as lots of the areas are pedestrianised and lots of the landmarks in Athens are close to each other.

I used the metro system for travelling between different neighbourhoods and if I was feeling too tired to walk. This connects all the major attractions.

The buses and trams also cover the city extensively, and of course, taxis are readily available. If you choose to use taxis, be careful of scams.

Note on Taxi Scams : Typically, the driver will try to charge you an extortionate amount, and say things like the meters aren’t working.

Always check with a local – tourist information or staff at your accommodation – how much a journey by taxi should cost. Also, check the price with the taxi driver before you get in, and if they are charging an insane price, just walk away. Scams with taxis are rife here!

Money Saving Tip

This article features quite a few of the ruin sites in Athens, including the Acropolis. A great way to save money is by getting the multi-pass.

The multi-pass covers 7 different ruin sites in the city. Out of the 7 sites, 6 of them are included in this 4 day Athens itinerary.

The 7-site pass includes:

  • The Acropolis
  • Temple of Zeus
  • Aristotle’s School
  • Keramikos Ancient Cemetery

Is Athens Safe?

Athens is generally a safe city for tourists. As with any busy place, keep an eye out for pickpockets as this is the most common complaint.

The other thing to be aware of is scams – in particular with the taxis. I already talked about this in the section above. Be cautious with taxi services and ensure you agree on the fare before you get in.

When it comes to choosing where to stay in Athens, there are several great options.

The neighbourhoods of Plaka, Monastiraki, and Koukaki are among the most popular and convenient areas for tourists so make sure to consider them in your Athens travel itinerary.

Boutique Accommodation in Athens – Electra Palace Athens

The Electra Palace Athens is a highly regarded luxury hotel in Plaka, offering elegant rooms, a rooftop pool, a spa, and a restaurant serving Greek cuisine. With its central location, it provides a comfortable stay for exploring Athens’ historical sites.

Best 4 Days in Athens Itinerary: Complete Athens 4 Days Guide for First-Time Visitors 2

Complete 4 Days in Athens, Greece Itinerary

It’s time to delve into this complete Athens itinerary, 4 days gives you enough time to see all the highlights the city has to offer at a comfortable pace as well as have time to take a day trip to explore more of the region. Let’s go!

Athens in 4 Days – Day 1

Start early with The Acropolis of Athens and its iconic Parthenon, one of the most important monuments in ancient Greece. Afterwards, visit the Acropolis Museum to get an insider’s look at artefacts uncovered from excavations around the area.

Continue your exploration around Ancient Agora, once the heart of Athenian public life. Discover more outstanding ruins of temples and monuments. Then for a different view of Athens, climb up Philopappou Hill in the late afternoon for stunning panoramas of the city.

Cap off your day with a sunset rooftop bar, where you can sip on a glass of wine while watching the city lights twinkle in the night sky.

The Acropolis of Athens and The Parthenon

The Acropolis of Athens is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic historical sites in the world. It stands on a rocky hill overlooking the city, and it is home to several ancient ruins and architectural wonders.

Here are the key highlights of the Acropolis:

  • Parthenon: The Parthenon is the most famous and imposing temple on the Acropolis. It was built in the 5th century BC and dedicated to the goddess Athena. The temple’s impressive Doric columns and intricate friezes are outstanding.
  • Odeon of Herodes Atticus: This ancient theatre, constructed in the 2nd century AD, is renowned for its excellent acoustics and still hosts performances to this day. It’s a popular venue during the Athens Festival.
  • Erechtheion: The Erechtheion is one of the better-preserved temples at the Acropolis dedicated to both Athena and Poseidon. It is characterised by its stunning Caryatid porch, featuring six sculpted female figures serving as columns. Don’t miss the 2500-year-old olive tree around the back of it!

Other must-see landmarks on the Acropolis include the Temple of Athena Nike, the Propylaea (the main entrance), and the Theatre of Dionysus Eleuthereus, which is considered the birthplace of Greek literacy readings.

I suggest arriving early for the Acropolis. The gates open at 8 am, I was at the gate before then to make sure I was first in and got to see the site with next to no other tourists. If you leave it until after 10, then the place is rammed. I also highly suggest buying your Acropolis ticket in advance , the ticket office queues at the Acropolis get insanely long.

The Acropolis (where you’ll find the Parthenon, Odeon of Herodes Atticus, the Erechtheion and other landmarks) is included as part of the Athens 7 Archaeological Sites Combo Ticket

The Odeon of Herodes Atticus is an open-air stone theater structure, featuring a front wall that offers a panoramic view of the city and mountains against a clear blue sky

Acropolis Museum

Located at the bottom of Acropolis Hill, is the Acropolis Museum. This is a modern and state-of-the-art museum that showcases a remarkable collection of ancient artefacts found during excavations of the Acropolis and the surrounding area.

One of the highlights of the museum is Level 3, which is dedicated to the Parthenon Friezes. These intricately carved sculpted panels were originally part of the Parthenon temple and depict mythological scenes, offering insight into the artistic and cultural achievements of ancient Greece.

Another must-see display at the museum is the original Caryatids statues, which were once part of the Erechtheion temple on the Acropolis. These beautiful female figures serving as columns are intricately carved and represent an iconic symbol of ancient Greek architecture.

Step into the vibrant past of Athens at Ancient Agora , this is where history comes alive.

This bustling marketplace and civic centre was not only a hub of commercial activity but also a place for political and social gatherings. Among its numerous fascinating features, two highlights of the Ancient Agora are the Temple of Hephaestus and the Stoa of Attalos.

The Temple of Hephaestus, also known as the Hephaisteion, is a remarkably well-preserved Doric temple dedicated to the Greek god of craftsmanship and blacksmiths. Built-in the 5th century BC, it stands as a testament to the exceptional architectural skills of the time.  This was one of my favourite temples in Athens , it’s beautifully well-preserved and restored and sits in gorgeous manicured gardens.

The Stoa of Attalos, reconstructed in the 1950s, is an impressive two-story collonaded building that served as a commercial and administrative centre in ancient times. This beautifully restored structure now houses a museum displaying artefacts found during excavations in the Agora.

Aside from these highlights, the Ancient Agora encompasses various other notable structures and monuments, such as the circular foundations of the Tholos and the Odeon of Agrippa.

Hike up Philopappou Hill

You will have noticed that there are a few hills surrounding Athens. This was by far my favourite one. Philopappou Hill is located close to the Acropolis.

Considering it’s so close, it wasn’t nearly as busy as I would have expected it to be. You might go as far as saying it is still a bit of a hidden gem in Athens.

This is one of the best places to come later in the day as the sunset transforms the Acropolis into a radiant masterpiece of yellow and orange hues.

Along the way, delve into some smaller historical monuments. Stop off at Socrates’ Prison. At the top, you’ll be greeted by the remarkable remnants of the Philopappos Monument. These are the ruins of a mausoleum dedicated to Gaius Julius Antiochus Epiphanes Philopappos.

Find a rock to sit on – there are plenty- and wait for the late afternoon sun to hit the Acropolis and surrounding area. It’s beautiful!

Rooftop Bar for Sunset

As the sun sets, head to one of the nearby rooftop bars that overlook the majestic Acropolis.

One of the best spots is “A for Athens,” a rooftop bar that boasts some of the best panoramic views of the illuminated Acropolis against the night sky. Sit and watch, while sipping on a cocktail and immerse yourself in this charming ambience.

Alternatively, you can head to the Galaxy Bar on the roof of the Hilton Athens.

Athens in 4 Days – Day 3

Your third day starts with the mighty Temple of Olympian Zeus. This temple featuring 17-metre-high columns was built in the 6th century BC and dedicated to Zeus. From there, visit the Panathenaic Stadium, home to the first modern Olympic games in 1896.

In the afternoon, for a bit of relaxation, wander through the Athens National Garden, the city’s largest urban garden. Finish off with the Kerameikos Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Athens, dating back to the 9th century BC.

In the evening, head back to the Plaka district to enjoy a traditional Greek meal at one of the taverns.

Located east of the Acropolis, this colossal temple* was dedicated to Zeus, the king of the Olympian gods. Although only a few columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus remain standing today, their sheer size and scale offer a glimpse into the temple’s former magnificence.

Adjacent to the temple, you’ll find the Hadrian’s Arch, a monumental gateway that served as a tribute to the Roman Emperor Hadrian. This intricately designed archway marks the transition from the ancient city to the Roman part of Athens and stands as a symbol of the fusion between Greek and Roman cultures.

DAY 1 OUT OF 4 DAYS IN ATHENS

1/4 Days In Athens Itinerary Map

On your Athens itinerary 1 day, you will get to see and experience the most important ancient monument, such as the Acropolis, coupled with gorging on the best Greek food.

📍 The Acropolis

The Acropolis is one of the best things to do in Athens.

You can’t visit Athens without exploring its most iconic landmark – soaring over 150 meters above the city skyline – the Ancient Acropolis. So it makes a lot of sense to start your 1 out of 4 days in Athens itinerary by exploring its greatest monument.

The best way to fully appreciate this important monument is to go on a guided tour. But if your itinerary or budget doesn’t allow for it, you can also purchase an audio tour. This is exactly what we did. We purchased a tour through Viator with access to the Acropolis and five other sites with audio, which you can listen to as you stroll independently through the monuments.

Acropolis Hill is busy all year round, and due to its fairly small size, it gets very crowded. If you want the best experience, arrive 15-20 minutes before the opening time of 8 am to be one of the first at the top. And don’t forget to pre-book your ticket. Enter the Acropolis from its South Slope to make sure you don’t miss the Theatre of Dionysus.

Acropolis was an easy choice for habitation, not because it was the highest hill in the area but due to its flat terrain and freshwater supply. The earliest evidence of human settlement dates back to the 6th millennium BCE!

The Acropolis Hill is a must see on your 4 days itinerary in Athens.

Over time, it became an important city centre and was home to various important structures, including the first monumental building during the Late Bronze Age. This was the palace of the Mycenaean king, which was later replaced by a temple dedicated to Athena.

In 480 BC, Acropoli suffered destruction when Athens was attacked by the Persians. Despite this setback, the city rebounded during the Golden Age between 460 and 430 BCE , thanks to the leadership of Pericles .

Acropolis

During this time, Athens attracted the greatest architects, craftsmen, and ordinary people who worked together to create impressive buildings such as the Temple of Athena Nike, Propylaea, the Parthenon, and the Erechtheion.

METRO: Acropoli (No 2 Red)

Recommended Time: 2 hours

Opening times: 8 am to 8 pm (April to October), 8 am to 5 pm winter time

Tickets: €22 or €36 for Athens Pass (entrance to 6 sites: Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Handrian’s Library, Kerameikos, Aristotle’s School, Temple of Olympian Zeus)

📍 Brunch In Anafiotika

Anafiotika Athens

After a busy morning delving into the ancient history of the city, head to the tiny but packed with character neighbourhood of Anafiotika, located on the northeastern slopes of the Acropolis.

Anafiotika is a unique place where you can stroll white-washed alleys and get lost amongst the Cycladic architecture of sugar cube houses adorned with blossoming bougainvillaea bushes.

Having a lunch in Anafiotika is one of the unique things to do in Athens.

The neighbourhood originates in the 19th century when carpenters from Anafi island came to Athens to work on the refurbishment of King Othon’s Palace. The workers built their houses here and called the neighbourhood after their beloved island of origin.

Today, the neighbourhood is filled with cute cafes and a perfect place to come for a tasty brunch and a little break. We ate at Yiasemi and really liked it. Don’t forget to get lost in its quaint alleys, and have your camera ready to take some photos.

Recommended Time: 1 hour

📍 Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is one of the must see in Athens.

After brunch at Anafiotika, continue your Athens 4 days itinerary at the Acropolis Museum, which is a must-visit destination for anyone with an interest in ancient Greece.

Opened in 2009, this state-of-the-art museum is located on the ruins of Athens’s ancient neighbourhood, providing a glimpse into the past as you walk across glass floors and see the remnants beneath.

What’s truly impressive about the museum, aside from its exhibits, is its construction. Built to withstand earthquakes up to a 10 on the Richter scale, the pillars themselves are built on roller bearings, ensuring the safety of the museum and the ruins underneath.

With 48 columns lining the space, built to mimic the Parthenon and designed to display its frieze, visitors will be transported back in time as they explore the over 4,000 exhibits on display , dating all the way from the Bronze Age to Byzantine times.

After your visit, take a break in the museum cafe, which boasts stunning views of the Acropolis.

You can purchase your ticket directly from the official museum website , where you will be required to pick a 2-hour time slot or book a guided tour that combines a visit to the Acropolis with the museum.

Tickets: €15

Opening times: 9 am to 8 pm (Monday 9 am-5 pm, Friday 9 am-10 pm)

📍 Athens Food Tour

Enjoying sand-brewed coffee during the Athens food tour.

After hours of exploring the ruins and learning about history, we recommend adding something super fun to your 4 \ 1 day Athens itinerary. And there is no better way to enjoy a new destination than sampling all the local foods!

Taking the Athens food tour was one of our favourite things to do in Athens, and if you’re a big foodie like we are, it will be yours too. Athens is worth visiting , even for the food only. 😋 There are different starting times, but we did one at 2 pm with a meeting point at Monastiraki Square.

On this tour, you will eat some of the most delicious foods from the culture-rich streets  of Athens’s fun neighbourhoods, such as Psiri. From classic Greek dishes like pita gyros and various meze platters to local favourites like spanakopita, loukoumades and coffee brewed in the hot sand – yes, you heard us right!

What we loved the most about this tour is all the interesting local stories and that we ate in non-touristy places that we would normally not even consider.

Book the same food tour we did and loved here:

By the evening, you will be filled with yummy Greek food, so make sure you skip your dinner plans on this day. We also recommend starting the tour very hungry.

📍 Sunset Drinks At A Rooftop Bar

A for Athens rooftop bar overlooking Monastiraki Square.

After the food tour, head to one of Athens’s rooftop bars to enjoy a few cocktails and epic views of the city. There are lots of rooftop venues to choose from, but we particularly liked A for Athens . The view over Monastiraki Square and the Acropolis is just unmatched!

Coctails at a rooftop bar is one of the best things to do in Athens at night.

The bar is super busy and probably overpriced, but it’s so worth it for the views. We had a great time there drinking Apperol Spritzers and chatting with a friendly Canadian couple. We recommend booking ahead if you want a good table overlooking the square.

DAY 2 OUT OF 4 DAYS IN ATHENS

On day 2 of 4 day itinerary Athens, you will be exploring mostly the modern part of the city with epic places such as the Panathenaic Stadium, Athens’ charming neighbourhoods and ending the day, if you dare, in the sky (literally).

Let’s look at the map of the Athens trip itinerary for day 2 first.

2/ 4 Days In Athens Itinerary Map

📍 Handrian’s Arch

Hadrian's arch Athens

Day 2 out of Athens in 4 days starts in the ancient part of the city.

The Hadrian’s Arch stands tall as a testament to the architectural prowess and to honour the Roman Emperor Hadrian for all he did for the city of Athens.

Built in the year 131 AD and resembling an arch of triumph, the massive arch linked the ancient city with the new city built by Hadrian.

When you look closely, you will be struck by the intricate details of the carvings on the arch, depicting various mythological scenes and figures. And as you walk through the arch, the feeling of stepping back in time will be palpable.

It’s amazing to think that this monument has stood for nearly 2,000 years and has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, yet still retains its timeless beauty and grandeur.

Tickets: free

Recommended Time: 10 minutes

📍 Temple of Olympian Zeus

Temple of Olympian Zeus Athens

Right after, head to the Temple of Olympian Zeus, located right behind the arch, where you will continue on your 4 days in Athens itinerary. If you purchased Athens Pass , which we highly recommend, this archaeological site is included in your ticket.

Make sure to get an audio guide; otherwise, there is no point paying for the entrance since the columns can be seen from the street.

The ancient Temple of Olympian Zeus was nothing short of ambitious. It took a whopping 638 years to complete , with work beginning all the way back in 174 BC and finally completed by the beloved Roman Emperor Hadrian.

The temple’s towering columns and intricate carvings are a testament to the skills of the builders who toiled for centuries on the project.

In fact, it remains the largest temple ever built , and its sheer size and grandeur continue to capture the imaginations of visitors. Though today only a few columns remain, they serve as a haunting reminder of the temple’s former majesty.

Tickets: €13 or included in Athens Pass.

Opening Times: 8 am to 7 pm (closes at 3:30 pm November – March)

📍Panathenaic Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium is a must on a 4 days in Athens Itinerary.

Next, walk for 8 minutes to reach the Panathenaic Stadium. The entrance ticket is unfortunately not included in the Athens Pass, but you can see it from the street even if you don’t buy the ticket.

The Stadium is a true marvel of ancient engineering. It’s the only stadium in the world built entirely with marble , which was a privilege reserved only for the most important buildings. The stadium was first built back in 330 BCE, but it was reconstructed in marble by a Roman emperor named Herodes Atticus.

After the rise of Christianity in the 4th century, the stadium was largely abandoned for centuries. It wasn’t until the 19th century that it was excavated and restored to its former glory.

Today, the Panathenaic Stadium is not only a historical landmark, but it is also a magnificent sports venue. It was the site of the first modern Olympics in 1896 and hosted the 2004 Olympics, too.

Moreover, it is the finishing point for the yearly Athens Classic Marathon, which is an ode to the mythical run from Marathon to Athens! With a capacity of 50,000 seats, this stadium is a true testament to the ancient art of construction.

Tickets: €10

METRO: Acropoli or Syntagma (Line no 2 Red or 3 Blue)

Opening Times: 8 am to 7 pm

📍Zappeion Hall

Athens 4 days should include Zappeion Hall.

After a visit to the Panathenaic Stadium, cross the Zappeion Gardens to reach your next stop Athens Greece Itinerary.

The grand Zappeion Hall is situated in the national gardens, and it is way more than just an imposing exhibition hall – it has a rich history rooted in the revival of the Olympic tradition .

Zappeion Hall

Thanks to the sponsorship of Evangelis Zappas , a wealthy businessman who dedicated part of his fortune to this cause, Athens was able to hold the first modern Olympic Games in 1869.

Zappeion Hall was built specifically to serve the Olympic needs at the time, and it stands as a testament to the lasting legacy of this monumental event. Today, visitors can peek into the halls that once hosted athletes from around the world and check out its magnificent architecture.

METRO: Syntagma (Line 3 Blue)

Recommended Time: 15 minutes

Opening Times: 9 am to 5 pm, Monday to Friday

📍Athens National Garden

Cycling in Athens through the city gardens.

Next, make your way to the Athens National Garden to take a little break from the hustle and bustle of all the busy Athens tourist attractions.

The former royal gardens were established by Queenn Amalia, the first queen of Greece . The gardens cover 16 hectares of land and are home to 500 species of plants. The gardens are a tranquil nature oasis in the middle of the urban jungle and a great place to take a stroll.

There is a botanical museum, and also, make sure you don’t miss out on a small pond with tinny turtles and an alley lined with huge palm trees before you move on to the next stop of the Athens Greece itinerary 4 days.

Opening Times: 6 am to 7 pm

📍Watch Changing Of The Guards

The Greek Parliament

The Parliament House located on Syntagma Square is the next stop on the Athens 4 day itinerary.

Amongst the top things to see in Athens, watching the change of the guards in front of the Parliament House and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a must-see attraction.

The Greek Parliament

These guards, known as the Tsolidades , wear distinctive uniforms that are sure to catch your eye, complete with black pompon-adorned leather clogs, white stockings, and beautiful, wide-sleeved white shirts. Their wool jackets are embroidered, and their knee-length white skirts have 400 pleats, a nod to the years of Ottoman occupation of Greece.

Make sure to stick around for the hourly changing of the guards, where you’ll witness a parade of incredible legwork that will surely leave you impressed.

Recommended Time: 30 minutes

Athens Bike Tour.

Want to visit all of the above locations on a bike? 🚲

Take an electric bike tour and have fun while touring the modern part of Athens.

Visiting Plaka should not be skipped out of any Athens itinerary.

After witnessing the change of the guards, head to the picturesque Plaka neighbourhood for lunch . Plaka is the oldest part of Athens, and today many of its streets are pedestrianised. It is a great place to shop for traditional Greek souvenirs such as spices, ceramics, silver jewellery, linen clothes and leather products.

If you’re a museum lover, there are a few good ones here worth checking out, including The Jewish Museum of Greece and the Museum of Popular Art and Tradition.

Adrianoy Street in Plaka.

The area is also lined with family-owned tavernas and quaint cafes. Start your walk on the eastern side of Kidathineon Street and continue on Adrianoy Street , which is a bustling shopping street perfect for finding unique souvenirs for your loved ones.

A place that you don’t want to miss out on is the Cathedral Church of Athens , which is the largest church in the city. The cathedral was built in the 19th century, and due to its huge cost, the authorities decided to demolish 72 other churches to use their stones for building this one.

Cathedral Church of Athens

The construction took over 20 years, and the church today has its own unique architectural style combining antiquity and Byzantium.

For a scenic lunch spot, head to Ciel Athens , boasting excellent food and rooftop views over the cathedral.

From here, continue to the lively district of Monastiraki.

METRO: Syntagma, Acropoli or Monastiraki

📍 Monastiraki

Monastiraki Square, Athens

Start at Kapnikarea Square , home to a quint old Byzantine church with beautiful icons. Continue towards Monastiraki Square, which is properly the liveliest part of the city and the centre of all the social meet-ups.

4 day tours from athens

The square takes its name from a former women’s monastery that was located here. Here you also find a metro station which connects the centre with the airport and Piraeus Port for those going to the islands next.

Monastiraki should be at the top of the 4 day itinerary Athens.

Monastiraki is also home to Hadrian’s Library , and if you continue west, you’ll find yourself in Monastiraki Flea Market, packed with all sorts of products, including bargain antiques.

Monastiraki should be at the top of the 4 days in Athens itinerary.

If you want to stop for a coffee or a refreshment, we recommend Instagram-worthy Ellyz Cafe , with floral pink decor or super healthy Happy Blender , serving vegan treats.

METRO: Monastiraki (Line Green no 1 or Blue no 3)

📍 Dinner in the Sky

Dinner In The Sky Athens was by far the most fun activity we've done.

For the evening of day 2 of the 4 day Athens itinerary, we suggest taking part in a super unique dining experience that we did and can highly recommend!

Dinner in the Sky Athens is a fine dining experience consisting of a 6-course meal prepared by professional chefs, accompanied by free-flowing wine. But what’s special about it?

Well, the dinner is served from a table  suspended on a crane at 40 meters , from where you can admire the stunning 360° views of the ancient Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, and panoramic views of the ageless Athens skyline.

DAY 3 OUT OF 4 DAYS IN ATHENS

On Day 3 out of 4 days in Athens itinerary, you will be exploring the birthplace of modern democracy – the Ancient Agora and the city’s hipster neighbourhood of Psyri as well as Athen’s best viewpoint.

3/4 Days In Athens Itinerary Map

📍Ancient Agora Of Athens

Ancient Agora Of Athens

Let’s start the day at Ancient Agora, located just a few minutes walk from Monastiraki Square. Unlike the Acropolis, this ancient monument has ample space, and you don’t have to queue before opening time. So on day 3 of the Athens itinerary 4 days, you can enjoy a slow morning.

The Ancient Agora of Athens stands as a testament to the birthplace of democracy and the public life that stemmed from it. This sprawling complex housed administrative, commercial, and judicial buildings that allowed for a meeting place for the greatest minds of ancient Greece, such as Socrates, Plato, and Pericles.

The most impressive building on the site is undoubtedly the Temple of Theseus. Perched atop a hill and dedicated to the god of fire and the forge, Hephaestus, this beautiful temple is the best-preserved ancient Greek temple in existence – largely due to the fact that it was converted to a Christian church over time.

It’s impossible not to feel a sense of awe when standing in the presence of such history.

METRO: Theseio (Line 1 Green)

Opening Times: 8 am to 8 pm

Tickets: €10 (April – October) €5 (November – March), €36 for Athens Pass (entrance to 6 sites: Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Roman Agora, Handrian’s Library, Kerameikos, Aristotle’s School, Temple of Olympian Zeus) or Athens Pass + Audio Guide .

Psyri - the foodie neighbourhood of Athens.

After the Ancient Agora, head to the fun and hipster neighbourhood of Psyri, located just a short walk.

The Psyri or Psiri is a vibrant and eclectic pocket of culture with a distinctly bohemian feel that pulses through its streets. Here, colourful displays of street art and intriguing political and cultural expressions can be found at every turn, making it a true haven for creatives.

The area boasts quirky cafes and bars where locals gather to chat and sip coffee and unique shops selling one-of-a-kind, hand-made items.

It’s a place where you can soak up its artsy atmosphere and truly feel the energy of the city that’s constantly evolving and pushing boundaries.

Little Cook in Psyri.

Start with brunch, or if you’ve already eaten a coffee and a cake at the fairy-tale-inspired Little Cook .

If you purchased the Athens Pass and are still hungry for more ancient ruins, head to the Archaeological Site of Kerameikos , which is the largest ancient cemetery in Athens.

Alternatively, stroll Psyri’s streets, browse the shops and try some local foods in this hipster neighbourhood.

Nestled at the foot of Mount Lycabettus , the Kolonaki neighbourhood in Athens is a charming and upscale area that boasts a unique ambience. The name “Kolonaki” itself means “Little Column”, a nod to the small column that stands in the neighbourhood’s central square.

📍 Mount Lycabettus

Going up the Mount Lycabettus is a top position on the athens 4 days itinerary.

The cherry on top of the experience is undoubtedly Saint George Chapel, a 19th-century marvel nestled at the peak of the mountain.

4 day tours from athens

You can reach the top of the mountain by a funicular ride, but we highly recommend taking the walk from the funicular station for a more adventurous experience (we did it both ways). Winding through the mountain in sharp turns, it takes roughly 30 minutes to reach the summit.

Once at the top, enjoy a drink at the bar while taking in some of the best views Athens has to offer.

Opening times: 8:20 am to 1:30 am

Tickets: €10 return funicular ticket or free if you walk

📍 Dinner in Plaka or Kolonaki

Dinning in Plaka is a big part of the 4 days in Athens itinerary.

Last on your Athens in 4 days itinerary is dinner. You can either have it in Kolonaki or go back to the lively Monastiraki, which we preferred.

We dined at Kitro Proin Terina because we really liked its ambience, and they also had live music.

📍 Delphi

Delphi Tours From Athens.

Delphi is a UNESCO World Heritage site located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, 120 kilometres north of Athens. It was revered by the ancient Greeks as the centre of the world , and people, poor and rich, visited Delphi for over 1000 years to receive prophecies from Pythia , a priestess believed to receive messages from the Greek god Apollo.

Delphi is a fascinating historical site that provides insight into the lives of ancient Greeks and is one of the best day trips from Athens.

Today, you can only visit the remains of a once mighty city. Take a walk along the Sacred Way that leads to the Temple of Apollo, which was built in the 6th century BC. There is also a large amphitheatre that can seat 5000 people, a 200-meter-long sports stadium, and the iconic Temple of Athena.

The drive to Delphi takes 2.5 hours. We rented a car in Athens, specifically to make this trip, and had a really good experienced. But taking a tour to Dephi is also a good option if you don’t want to drive.

Book your spot on the tour to Delphi here:

The nearest beaches to Athens are a 30-minute drive from the city centre. Having your own car makes a beach day in Athens quick and easy, but is also possible to get here by bus, such as the HOHO bus .

We recommend Kape Beach, a one-hour drive from Athens on the coastal road. The sandy beach is made up of several coves backed by cliffs and has a laid-back island feel. It is clean and unspoilt and can only be accessed by stairs.

If you prefer organised beaches, try Sounion Beach, a long sandy beach a 1 hour and 10 drive from Athens. There are dining options on the beach, plus sunbeds and umbrellas to rent.

Sounion Beach is close to the Temple of Poseidon, so it is a perfect spot to relax and cool off after your sightseeing.

The 5th century B.C. The Temple of Poseidon has a spectacular 65-metre-high clifftop setting overlooking Cape Sounion. It is approximately a 1.5-hour drive (or 70 kilometres) from Athens, so it is a great day trip from the capital.

Athens street food is a must to try on a 4 days in Athens itinerary.

During our stay in Athens, we dined there multiple times are particularly enjoyed Tylixto Greek Wrap , which makes hands down the best pita gyros in town, including fabulous veggie options!

How Do You Get Around Athens Without A Car?

Monastiraki Square is the major metro station in Athens.

Athens Metro

The Athens metro system is a great option for getting around the city centre as it is both extensive and reliable . It is available seven days a week, with services beginning at 5:30 am and stopping just after midnight (or at 2:30 am on weekends). Additionally, fares are super affordable.

You can buy a single ticket which gives you unlimited public transport for 90 minutes for €1.20 . Alternatively, you can buy a two, three or five-day unlimited travel card. The three-day Tourist Card Ticket is excellent value for money at €20 and includes a round trip to the airport.

If you are staying longer in Athens, you can also buy plastic rechargeable cards similar to London’s Oyster Card. These cards must be bought from metro stations but can be topped up in most shops and kiosks around Athens.

Athens Hop ON Hop Off Bus

hop on hop off bus Athens can be perfect to use on a 4 days in Athens itinerary

Another excellent and easy way to get around the city is by HOHO bus . There are three Hop On Hop Off bus lines in Athens, and together they cover all of the city’s major attractions.

Each route takes around two hours to complete if you stayed solely on the bus, but you can get on and off the bus as many times as you wish. There are up to 22 stops on the routes, and the buses travel as far as Piraeus and local beaches.

Your ticket includes full commentary, and you can choose between a 24-hour or 72-hour ticket. If you choose a 24 ticket, we advise starting your ticket around midday. This means you can enjoy a full afternoon and evening of sightseeing but also have time to see more attractions the next morning when you feel refreshed.

The one downside of using the HOHO buses in Athens is that traffic is often slow-moving in the city centre. But as you are not the driver, you can sit back and soak up the views!

4 Days in Athens: An Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

*This article may contain affiliate links. For full information, please see the disclaimer  here.

Athens is a mecca of history and culture. A modern city with a lot of character, it offers extraordinary sightseeing experiences, varied shopping options, superb food and nightlife, and great weather. What more could a traveler possibly ask for?

4 days in Athens should be enough for first-time visitors to get a feel of the city. But how can you fit all that into 4 days, you ask? Read on, I’ll tell you!

View of Athens

Table of Contents

Where to stay

The best place to stay in Athens is the city’s historic center. This extends from Syntagma Square to the areas of Monastiraki, Plaka, Thisio, and Psiri. It’s where most of the important attractions are, all within walking distance from each other.

And it’s also where Gatsby Athens Hotel is located. A new addition to the Athens hotel scene, Gatsby is a luxury boutique hotel boasting Art-deco interiors and a stunning rooftop terrace.

A cheaper option, located just as strategically as Gatsby, is L’Avventura Athens .

How to get around

The best way to get around the center of Athens is on foot. Most of the city’s ancient sights are scattered around its historic center. As long as you wear a sensible pair of shoes, you will find that Athens is a very walkable city. You will never find yourself walking for more than 10-15 minutes between different sights.

Metro in Athens

Luckily, there are various options for when you get tired. Athens has a metro system with 3 lines connecting the center to the suburbs, as well as Eleftherios Venizelos airport, and the Port of Piraeus. The metro is punctual, runs regularly, and stops at almost every place of interest in the center of Athens.

You can buy 90-minute metro tickets for €1.20 from automatic machines at each station. However, a more cost-effective option for an Athens 4 day itinerary is to buy an €8.20 5-day pass. This is valid for unlimited transportation on the metro and buses.

Taxis in Athens

Those who prefer to get around by taxi will be happy to learn that you’re never too far from one in Athens. Unfortunately, Greek taxi drivers have a reputation for overcharging tourists.

If you want to be extra sure you’re not paying too much, order your taxi via a mobile app like Beat Passenger. This will give you the estimated cost of your ride in advance.

Morning: Explore Plaka, the city’s oldest neighborhood

4 day tours from athens

Your first morning in Athens should be spent getting your bearings. Athens can be a loud, chaotic city, so slowly immersing yourself in it is the way to go.

Head to Plaka and grab yourself a freddo espresso and traditional cheese pie at Yiasemi, the area’s most picturesque cafe. When you’re all fueled up, start making your way around Plaka’s narrow cobblestone streets. Marvel at its gorgeous neoclassical buildings and check out the Tower of the Winds as you walk past it.

You have now reached your destination: the Ancient Agora. Take a guided tour of the Agora’s temples and concert hall to learn about its history and significance.

Afternoon: Grab a souvlaki in Monastiraki

Monastiraki square in Athens, Greece

By now, you will have no doubt worked up an appetite. It’s time for an “Athens itinerary must”: souvlaki!

Walk to Monastiraki square and take a seat at any one of the area’s iconic souvlaki joints. Order some starters, like a Greek salad and tzatziki, and a “pita gyro ap’ola” (i.e. “gyro meat wrapped in pita bread with everything added on”) to get the most authentic version of this classic street food!

To digest this, you will probably need to do some more walking. Thankfully, Monastiraki renders itself perfectly for that. Just a hundred meters away from the souvlaki joints is the Monastiraki flea market. There, you can find all sorts of cool souvenirs, like leather handbags and sandals, handmade jewelry, and artisanal olive products.

Monastiraki’s antique stalls are also worth stopping at. They sell a variety of items, from old coins to ornate furniture, and are a treasure hunter’s dream.

Evening: Enjoy the bohemian atmosphere of Psiri

Just across the road from Monastiraki is the bohemian neighborhood of Psiri. Wandering its streets, its hip, artsy energy is palpable. Take your time walking around Psiri, stopping to admire the cool graffiti murals.

Before the sun goes down, make sure to take a photo at the famous Pitaki street, which is known for its suspended lampshade “ceiling”.

If you’re hungry, head to Lokali, a dreamy spot with a hidden courtyard, on Sarri street for some nibbles. You will need to line your stomach if you’re to continue the evening as the locals do: at one of Psiri’s many bars. Try Psira for a traditional-but-young atmosphere and Barett, or Tranzistor, for good cocktails.

Morning: Visit the Acropolis and Acropolis Museum

Acropolis

Now that you’ve acquainted yourself with the city, it’s time for the most popular Athens activity of all time: a tour of the Acropolis. It can get very hot on the Acropolis hill under the afternoon sun, so make sure to start the day nice and early, and bring some water along.

To make the most of your visit and learn as much as possible about this ancient wonder of the world, a good idea is to book a guided tour of the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum .

If at any point you need a break, the Acropolis Museum boasts a great cafe-restaurant. Grab yourself a Greek coffee and sip it slowly on the cafe’s balcony. The view of the Parthenon from there is unparalleled!

Afternoon: Climb Filopappou hill and stroll on Dionisiou Areopagitou promenade

4 day tours from athens

To be able to say you have truly “done the Acropolis”, it’s important to also explore its environs.

Just a minute’s walk away from the Acropolis is Filopappou hill. A wild, pine-shaded spot that is very popular with the Athenians, it’s a perfect place for a refreshing break from the strong Greek sun. You can also visit Socrates’ prison there, which is a cave where the ancient philosopher is believed to have been imprisoned in 399 BC.

Just a couple of minutes’ walk from Filopappou hill is your next destination: Dionisiou Areopagitou street. This is a paved, pedestrianized street that constitutes Athens’ loveliest promenade. While there, take a photo at the Arch of Hadrian, one of the city’s most Instagrammable spots.

Evening: Spend some time in Koukaki

No need to check the clock: you will know it’s time to move on to your next activity when you see the sun set over the Acropolis.

You have two options. If you’re visiting Athens in the summertime, you should check out the nearby Cine Thisio. This is an outdoor cinema that has been declared the best open-air cinema in the world! Get an ice cream and traditional visinada (sour cherry juice) and settle in for a classic old movie in a stunning location, permeated with the scent of jasmine.

If the weather isn’t that good, or you simply don’t feel like a movie, head straight on to Koukaki. A 10-minute walk from Dionisiou Areopagitou, Koukaki is one of the hippest neighborhoods of Athens. Go to Bel Ray bar for some drinks, or try some Greek wine at Bobo Wine Bar.

Morning: Head to the Athens Riviera

Landscape with volcanic lake Vouliagmeni with azure water and radon located 25 km from the center of Athens

By now, you probably need a break from the hustle and bustle of the center. Thankfully, Athens is a big, multifaceted place with a lot more to offer. Today’s itinerary will make you feel like you’re in a completely different city.

Wake up early, and make your way over to the city’s south suburbs, an area known as the Athens Riviera. Start with a little bit of shopping on Glydada’s fancy high street, followed by brunch by the beach at Ark restaurant. After that, go to Vouliagmeni where you can take an Athens Riviera Trikke tour that ends with a swim in Vouliagmeni lake .

Afternoon: Take a tour of Cape Sounion

4 day tours from athens

Once you’ve dried off, it will be time to get your move on. Head over to Cape Sounion for an afternoon of sightseeing. Do a self-guided audio tour of the Temple of Poseidon and the Sanctuary of Athena , which are two of the most beautiful ancient sites in Greece.

Take your time walking around, as you’ll want to stay in the archaeological area until the sun sets. The sun disappearing into the Aegean sea with ancient temples in the background is an awe-inspiring sight you’ll never forget. Make sure your phone’s battery is fully charged, so you can take a lot of photos!

Evening: Eat meat like a Greek at Vlachika

After a busy day full of activities, you will most likely be starving. A stop at Vlachika should sort that out.

Vlachika is a group of traditional grill houses in Vari, which makes them conveniently located for your trip back to your city center accommodation. They are considered a cult Athenian gastronomic spot and have a fanatical meat-lover following. Order some lamb, kokoretsi, or kontosouvli and you’ll leave feeling like you stumbled onto a real Athenian hidden gem!

If you find that you still have some energy left after that, pass by Bolivar Beach Club on Poseidonos Avenue. With good music, great cocktails, and a seaside dancefloor, Bolivar has justifiably earned a spot as one of the city’s best nightlife spots.

Morning: Visit the Panathenaic Stadium and the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture

4 day tours from athens

After a night of eating and drinking, what better way to start your day than a run at the stadium that hosted the first modern Olympic games?

The Panathenaic Stadium is open to joggers every day between 7:30 to 9:00. When you’re done running, don’t forget to take a photo sitting on the marble throne seats that were specially created for King George I and Queen Olga of Greece.

On your way back to the center of town, stop by the Benaki Museum of Greek Culture. Housed in one of the most beautiful neoclassical buildings in Athens, the Benaki Museum gives visitors a comprehensive overview of Greek history, from the prehistoric period to the 20th century.

To ensure you don’t waste any time on your last morning in Athens, book your “Skip the Line” entrance ticket for the Benaki Museum in advance.

Afternoon: Shop ‘til you drop at Ermou street

People are shopping on Ermou Street in Athens.

On your last afternoon in Athens, you will probably want to do some last-minute souvenir shopping. Ermou street, a 1.5-kilometer street that connects Syntagma to Monastiraki, is the perfect place for it.

On it, you will find all sorts of shops, from big international brand stores to smaller Greek boutiques. The side streets off Ermou are also worth exploring if you’re looking for a more quirky, hole-in-the-wall shopping experience.

When you start to get a little hungry,  enter the arcade (known as “stoa” in Greek) on Lekka street. There, you will find To Triantafyllo tis Nostimias, an authentic taverna where you can sample some excellent mezedes with a glass of ouzo.

Evening: Check out some of the world’s best bars

4 day tours from athens

Kick off your last evening in Athens in style with sundowners at one of the city’s many rooftop bars. Watch the Acropolis change color as the sun goes down before it lights up for the night. Retirè Rooftop Bar on Mitropoleos street is a great place to do that.

After a cocktail or two, you’ll probably be ready to hit the bars. Athens is famous for being home to some of the world’s best bars. Baba au Rum and The Clumsies, in particular, have both been repeatedly featured in the World’s 50 Best Bars list.

Add a few more cool city center bars to your night’s itinerary, like Bartesera and Barreldier, and get ready for the bar crawl to end all bar crawls!

Just remember to pace yourself because Athenian nightlife doesn’t properly begin until late at night, and goes on until early in the morning. Hopefully, you won’t have scheduled your departure flight until the afternoon of the next day!

Wrapping up

There is a lot to do in Athens. Its varied neighborhoods mean you don’t have to go far to find a new angle on the city. Athens’ center alone is peppered with so many sights that it puts many other countries to shame! Despite that, I hope you find that my guide is useful and gives you a taste of real Athenian life on your trip.

Happy travels!

The Ruins of Delphi in Greece

Table of Contents

Located just over 2 hours away from Athens, Delphi is one of the most popular day trips from Athens, and it’s easy to understand why. The ancient city of Delphi was home to one of the most important Greek temples and known as being the “Center of the World” in ancient Greece. It is rich in history and sits at the foot of beautiful Mount Parnassus.

Today, this UNESCO World Heritage site is best known for the stunning ruins of the Temple of Apollo . It is also home to a lot of history, including the famous Oracle of Delphi and the Delphi Archeological Museum , where you can explore ancient artifacts of the long lost Greek world.

Do this day trip from Athens to explore the sacred center of the ancient Greek World. Walk the Sacred Way to the Temple of Apollo . Explore the Sanctuary of Apollo . Check out the Sphinx of Naxo , a creature with a woman’s head, lion’s body, and wings of a bird.

A day trip to Delphi is easy to do from Athens. If you have your own transportation, you can drive there yourself – in fact, it’s probably the best day trip from Athens by car. If you’re without transportation, don’t worry, you can still easily get there by one of the many organized day trips.

This small group Delphi day trip from Athens is the ultimate adventure as you’ll have a knowledgable guide to help learn about the area. Or, if you’d prefer, you can do a private Delphi Full Day Tour from Athens to get personalized attention and insight.

The Ruins of the Temple of Poseidon at sunset

2. Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon

Another can’t miss day trip from Athens is the Coast of Apollo, home to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon . Located just over an hour away on the Athens Riviera, the Coast of Apollo is a high-end tourist destination offering five-star resorts , spas, yacht clubs, and more!

During a day trip to the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, you can explore the palm-fringed beaches and coastline, an important archaeological site at the Temple of Poseidon, and of course Cape Sounion with endless views over the sparkling Aegean Sea. This also makes it the perfect place to catch an amazing sunset.

A day trip to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon can be done via public transportation by taking the bus from the Ktel Attikis bus station in Athens. However, the easiest and most enjoyable way to do it is by taking an organized tour. This alleviates you figuring out all of the logistics about getting from place to place allowing you to maximize your vacation time!

Being a popular day trip from Athens, there are multiple tour options to choose from. Opt for a half day small group tour or a private day trip to be on your own agenda. Alternatively, you can also make it a more romantic journey with a private sunset tour with a seaside dinner .

The coastal city and hills of Nafplio

3. Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio

About 2 hours outside of Athens you’ll find a cluster of important historical sites. Take in the ancient ruins of Mycenae – a Unesco World Heritage site, the Venetian Palamidi fortress in Nafplion, the first capital of modern Greece, and the ancient theater in Epidaurus .

Mycenae is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Greece, best known in Greek mythology as the city of Agamemnon. This fortified city was a military strong hold, perhaps you’ve heard about it as King Agamemnon is the one who led the charge against Troy during the Trojan War that Homer then wrote about in his epics.

Fortunately, there are lots of ways to visit Mycenae, Epidaurus, and Nafplio. Opt to join a small group for a Mycenae and Epidaurus day trip from Athens or if you’d prefer, there are private tours from Athens to Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio .

Looking to fit more into your day? You can join a Peloponnese Highlights Tour , which will take you through the Corinth Canal to Corinth as well as to Mycenae, Nafplio, and Epidaurus!

Sunset over the monasteries in Meteora, Greece

Hands down one of the best day trips from Athens is Meteora, famous for its giant rock formations topped with Byzantine-era monasteries. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in the heart of Greece and a simple four hour train ride from Athens. This make it easy to get there and explore this unique part of Greece.

During your trip, you’ll want to visit a few of the six active monasteries of Meteora , the hermit caves of Badovas , and the town of Kalabaka . It will give you a feel for why Meteora is geologically and culturally important to Greece while taking in the unique, breathtaking views of the monasteries that sit perched on top of sandstone cliffs.

If you want easy access to the area, opt to join a tour to Meteora to fit it all into one day. This will make it easy to transfer from place to place, including getting a panoramic view of the six active monasteries, as well as visiting three monasteries and the hermit caves of Badovas!

With a four hour train ride on either end of your visit, some travelers opt to spend more time in Meteora by staying overnight. This gives you time to see more and experience the area in a different way. Plan a hike. Take a sunset tour. The options are endless.

To spend two days in Meteora, you can do it yourself by taking the train and booking a hotel in Kalabaka or Kastraki , or you can take a two day tour to Meteora from Athens .

The harbor and city of Aegina island

5. Saronic Islands

A trip to Greece is not complete without visiting the Greek Isles. If you have the time, you can make it a multi-day adventure to visit the more famous Cyclades Islands, including Santorini and Mykonos . However, if you’re shorter on time, or even just want to visit smaller Greek islands, head to the Saronic Islands.

The Saronic Islands offer plenty of islands to choose from, with the most popular being Aegina , Agistri , Moni , Poros , and Hydra ! These beautiful Mediterranean islands are close to the mainland and perfect to sail to from Athens.

Do a day trip to one island on your own taking the ferry, or opt to spend a day island-hopping from ancient temples to pristine beaches with an organized day trip.

Snorkel right off the boat. Rent a bike to explore the amazing beaches of Agistri. Stroll through the streets of Aegina to visit the ancient Greek temple of Aphaia – one of the best preserved places of worship. Explore the classic cobblestone alleys of Hydra. Visit the pine forest and lemon groves of Poros. It’s the perfect way to spend a day in sunny Greece!

For the best experience, choose to take an all day cruise from Athens to the Saronic Islands , including Aegina, Agistri, and Moni or one day cruise with live music and dancing to Hydra, Poros, and Aegina.

Most day trips to the Saronic Islands from Athens provide welcome tea, coffee, juice, and pastries as well as a delicious Mediterranean Greek food lunch with traditional wine and beer. Can it get any better?

The famous ruins of Corinth

Looking for more amazing Athens day trips? Corinth is a popular one and can even be done as a half day guided tour ! It will take you down the coast to Corinth where you can experience its historic sights, like the Corinth Canal , Temple of Apollo , and the Port of Cehrees .

The Corinth Canal is famous for connecting the Aegean Sea with the Ionian Sea and is quite impressive. It is named after the nearby historic town of Corinth. This once-prosperous city is where St. Paul lived and preached.

Today, you can visit the ruins of the city, including the large market – or agora – and the Temple of Apollo, first built in the 6th century BC. From there, you can head to the Port of Cehrees where St. Paul disembarked.

If you’d like to learn more about St. Paul, opt to take a private biblical tour of ancient Corinth & Isthmus Canal . This will give you further insight into St. Paul, his life, and the locations that he visited and preached as your knowledgable guide puts sights in context, as recorded in the Acts of the Apostle.

Another awesome option when visiting Corinth from Athens is to turn it into a full day trip by adding on the mythical underground Cave of Lakes . This option also takes you on the historic Odontotos Rack Railroad and visiting the areas’ wineries . It’s an excellent option for those looking to experience Corinth from a more exploratory angle versus religious standpoint.

Multi-Day Tours from Athens

Can’t decide on just one day trip from Athens? Consider taking a multi-day tour to check out a number of the amazing nearby locations. This will allow you to maximize your exploration while minimizing travel time. Not to mention, you’ll get to stay overnight in some amazing Greek cities and towns.

Here are three of your best options:

  • 2-Day Delphi and Meteora Tour from Athens
  • 3-Day Classical Greece Tour: Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nafplion, Olympia, Delphi
  • 4-Day Greece Highlights Tour: Epidaurus, Mycenae, Olympia, Delphi and Meteora

Other Must-Visit Locations in Greece

With so many amazing day trips from Athens, you’ll want to spend some quality time based in Athens. This will give you time to get out and explore many of the places that have made Greece so historically and culturally rich, including some of these day trips.

Athens is a great home base offering plenty of activities, hotels , and delicious restaurants – not to mention views of the lit up Acropolis at night!

What kind of seat will I have on the ferry?

You’ll find a standard seat reserved for you while you’re sailing between the mainland and islands. (Mhm, travelling just like the locals!)

Will the ferries have Wi-Fi?

Looking to disconnect from the world (and connect with your new travel pals)? Ferries are the place to be. The Wi-Fi and phone signal when sailing between islands (understandably) tends to be weak. That’s why we always recommend using an e-SIM or getting a local SIM so you can have continued connectivity. But there’s no need to worry if you don’t have one. All accommodations throughout the trip will have Wi-Fi available - so you can keep your Insta followers updated on all the fun!

Do all of the hotels have pools?

Almost every time. Most of our accommodations tend to have pool facilities. But hey, you’ve got the sparkling Aegean waters of Greece by your side. So if you wanna take a swim, you’ve got the entire sea to explore.

Can I know what time the ferry will depart & arrive?

Ferry departure & arrival timings tend to change for every trip. So if you’d like to know the exact time, you can contact our 24/7 customer service centre.

What’s included?

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

A day by day breakdown of inclusions and Free Time Add-Ons are available on the trip specific pages.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting.

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important.

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

What are Contiki's sustainability credentials?

Travel comes with responsibilities. That’s why we’re determined to travel sustainably and consciously, and that’s why we’re willing to take a stand on issues closest to our hearts. Find out more details here . With the help of our four-point Climate Action Plan, we're now on a journey to Net Zero - committing to carbon reductions and evolving to support the transition to a low-carbon future. Find out more details here .

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for this trip?

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). For more information check out our full travel insurance FAQs.

Can I stay in my destination a few days before/after the trip starts/ends? And can Contiki help me arrange this?

Yes and yes! You can add pre- and post-trip accommodation to your booking in one of three ways:
