तीन पहाड़ी धाराएँ मुतिरापूझा, नल्लथनी और कुंडला जहाँ स्थित हैं, वहाँ पर बसा केरल का बेस्ट टूरिस्ट प्लेस का मुन्नार हिल स्टेशन स्वर्ग के समान है। पहाड़ों से गुज़रती तीन नदियां, मनमोहक कुदरती नज़ारे, कल कल करके बहते दुधिया जलप्रपात, सुन्दर झीलें, दूर-दूर तक फैले चाय के बागान इसे दक्षिण भारत का सबसे बेस्ट हिल स्टेशन बनती है। चाय और कॉफ़ी के अलावा, मुन्नार का मुख्य आकर्षण नीली कुरिजी नामक ख़ूबसूरत फूल है, जो 12 साल में यह एक बार ही खिलता है। मुन्नार से 15 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित इरविकुलम राष्ट्रीय उद्यान लुप्तप्राय प्राणी – नीलगिरी टार के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। यह उद्यान 97 वर्ग किमी में फैला है, जिसमे तितलियों, जानवरों और पक्षियों के अनेक दुर्लभ प्रजातियां विचरण करती है। जब नीलकुरिंजी के फूल खिलते है तब ऐसा लगता है जैसे पहाड़ों ने नीली चादर ओढ़ी हो। पूरी दुनिया से पर्यटक इस द्रश्य को देखने आते है। खूबसूरत झील के लिए माट्टूपेट्टी, आनामुड़ी शिखर, प्राकृतिक सुंदरता से भरपूर पल्लिवासल, चाय के बगीचे, झरनों के लिए प्रसिद्ध चिन्नकनाल और खेल के लिए प्रसिद्ध अनयिरंगल यहां के प्रमुख दर्शनीय स्थल है।

केरल के बेस्ट पर्यटन स्थल तिरुवनंतपुरम को तिरूवनंतपुरम के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। तिरुवनंतपुरम में प्रसिद्ध मंदिरों में प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थलों में श्री पद्मनाभास्वामी मंदिर भगवान विष्णु का मंदिर है। यह मंदिर दुनिया के सबसे धनी मंदिरों में से एक माना जाता है। यहां भगवान विष्णु शयन मुद्रा में विराजमान हैं। ऐसा माना जाता हैं कि भगवान विष्णु सपने में आकर खुद इस मंदिर के पुनर्निर्माण की ज़िम्मेदारी सौंप कर गए थे। साड़ी पहने महिलाओं को या सलवार सूट में भी महिलाओं को प्रवेश करने की अनुमति है। पुरुषों को धोती पहनने की अनुमति है। इसके अलावा अटुकल भगवती मंदिर, अजिमाला शिव मंदिर, कारिकाकोम चामुंडी देवी मंदिर और पझवंगड़ी गणपति मंदिर शामिल हैं। यहां पर आपको नारियल के पेड़ बहुत मिलेंगे, यही वजह है कि यहां का सबसे मशहूर पेय नारियल पानी है। तिरुवनंतपुरम काफी विकसित शहर है। यहाँ प्राकृतिक दृश्यों का अनुभव करने के लिए एक बहुत ही अच्छा जगह है। यकीन मानिए यहाँ जाने के बाद आपको प्राकृतिक दृश्यों का बेहद सुखद अनुभव होगा।

कुमारकोम, केरल

केरल के प्रसिद्ध स्थानीय भोजन

वैसे तो केरल का प्रमुख भोजन चावल है। गेहूँ, मैदा आदि भी केरलीयों को प्रिय है। पुट्टू और कडाला करी व्यंजन केरल के बहुत प्रसिद्ध खाद्य पदार्थों में से एक है। केरल के भोजन में शाकाहारी और मांसहारी दोनों ही व्यंजन शामिल है। लोकप्रिय व्यंजनों में डोसा, इडली, सांभर और चावल के व्यंजन जैसे बिरयानी और पुलाव शामिल हैं।

केरल जाने का उचित समय

केरल में ज्यादातर गर्मी पड़ती है। बारिश के मौसम में  बादलों के कारण आप केरल के पर्यटन स्थलों का आनंद नहीं के पाएंगे, इसलिए बारिश का मौसम जाने बाद नवंबर से मई के मध्य जाना ही उचित होगा।

केरल के लगभग सभी गंतव्यों तक इस सुव्यवस्थित रेल नेटवर्क के जरिए पहुंचा जा सकता है। भारत के विभिन्न हिस्सों से राजधानी, दुरंतो और सुपरफास्ट एक्सप्रेस जैसी ट्रेनों के साथ-साथ मेल और पैसेंजर ट्रेनें भी केरल के लिए उपलब्ध हैं।

सड़क मार्ग से केरल कैसे पहुंचे?

बस स्टेशन कोच्चि रेलवे स्टेशन के पास है जहाँ से आप कैब किराए पर ले सकते हैं। केरल राज्य सड़क परिवहन निगम ने शबरीमला तीर्थयात्रियों की सुविधा हेतु पंबा से कोयंपत्तूर, पलनी और तेंकाशी केलिए बस सेवा सुविधा का प्रबंध किया है । साथ ही तमिलनाडु और कर्णाटक की सरकारें पंबा केलिए बसों केलिए अनुमति दी है।

Kerala Tourism / केरल भारत के दक्षिण पश्चिम कोने में स्थित एक राज्य है। इस राज्य को “गॅाड्स ओन कंट्री“ भी कहा जाता है। यह भारत के सबसे पसंदीदा और लोकप्रिय पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक है। दुनिया भर से बड़ी तादाद में लोग इस राज्य को देखने आते हैं। भरपूर ट्रॉपिकल यानि ऊष्‍णकटिबंधीय हरियाली, नारियल के पेड़, तटों पर दूर तक फैले पाम, गदगद कर देने वाली पानी पर तैरती हाउसबोट, कई मंदिर, आयुर्वेद की सुंगध, दुर्बल झीलें या समुद्री झीलें, नहर, द्वीप आदि, केरल के बारे में न इंकार की जा सकने वाली छाप छोड़ते हैं जिसे सिर्फ केरल में ही देखा जा सकता है। नेशनल ज्योग्राफिक ट्रेवलर मैगजीन के अनुसार केरल ‘दुनिया के टाॅप दस पैराडाइज़’ और ‘50 प्लेसेस आॅफ लाइफटाइम’ में से एक है।

केरल एक ऐसी जगह है, जहाँ किसी भी तरह की छुट्टी बिताई जा सकती है, यहाँ हनीमून, वेकेशन, होलीडे, फॅमिली ट्रिप कुछ भी किया जा सकता है। केरल राज्‍य में कुल 14 जिले हैं जिनमें कासरगोड, कन्‍नूर, वायनाड, कोझीकोड, मालाप्‍पुरम, पलक्‍कड़, त्रिशुर, एर्नाकुलम, इडुकी, कोट्टयम, अलप्‍पुझा ( अलेप्‍पे ), पथानमथीट्टा, कोल्‍ल्‍म, तिरूवनंतपुरम सबसे ज्‍यादा प्रसिद्ध पर्यटन स्‍थलों में से हैं।

केरल में कुछ बहुत शानदार वाॅटरवे, खाडि़यां, झीलें, नहरें, नदियां आदि हैं। यहां पानी का इतना बड़ा इंटरलाॅकिंग नेटवर्क है कि हाउसबोट से आराम से यात्रा की जा सकती है। केरल के बैकवाॅटर में आपको कुछ सबसे खूबसूरत और दुर्लभ प्रजाति का जलीय जीवन मिलेगा, जैसे मेंढक से लेकर कंेकड़े, मडस्कीपर, किंगफिशर, जलकाग, डार्टर और कछुए और कोर्टर तक। बैकवाॅटर के किनारे लगे पत्तेदार पौधे, झाडि़यां, खजूर के पेड़ पूरे माहौल में हरियाली भर देते हैं। कुछ सबसे खूबसूरत केरल बैकवाॅटर जो आप देख सकते हैं उनमें कोल्लम बैकवाॅटर, अल्लेप्पी बैकवाॅटर, कोझीकोड बैकवाॅटर, कोचीन बैकवाॅटर, कासरगोड बैकवाॅटर आदि हैं।

केरल की इस सुंदर धरती पर बड़ी संख्या में खूबसूरत हिल स्टेशन हैं जो कि केरल की अपील को और बढ़ाते हैं। यदि आपको शहर की भागदौड़ से दूर एक ब्रेक की जरुरत है तो आप केरल के ये सुंदर पर्वत देख सकते हैं। यहां के कुछ खूबसूरत हिल स्टेशनों में से कुछ हैं – मुन्नार, रानीपुरम, देवीकुलम, पोनमुडी, इडुक्की, पायथल माला। इन जगहों की लुभावनी हरियानी देखने लायक है।

केरल के वाइल्ड लाइफ सेंचुरी में आपको लगभग सभी तरह के जानवर, समुद्री जीव और पक्षी मिलेंगे। कुछ बहुत दुर्लभ प्रजातियां भी आपको केरल में मिल जाएंगीं। इनमें से कुछ जानवर हैं – नीलगिरी तहर, बाघ, तेंदुआ, हाथी, मकाक, हिरण, तिमलियां, पतंगे, केंकड़े, मडस्कीपर और अन्य कई। यहां देखने लायक वाइल्ड लाइफ सेंचुरी में चिन्नार वाइल्ड लाइफ सेंचुरी, पेरियार टाइगर रिजर्व, थटटेकड पक्षी अभयारण्य, एराविकुलम नेशनल पार्क, इडुक्की वाइल्ड लाइफ सेंचुरी, वायनाड वाइल्ड लाइफ सेंचुरी और कुमारकोम पक्षी अभयारण्य हैं।

केरल की संस्‍कृति, भारत की संस्‍कृति का अभिन्‍न हिस्‍सा है जिसमें कला के कई रूपों के विभिन्‍न पहलू, भोजन, पहनावा आदि शामिल हैं। कथकली और मोहिनीअट्टम यहां के प्रमुख नृत्‍य रूप हैं जो सारी दुनिया में सराहे जाते हैं।

कैसे पहुंचे –

यह प्रसिद्ध अंतर्राष्ट्रीय पर्यटन स्थल है। कोवलम में तीन अ‌र्द्धचंद्राकार समुद्र तट हैं। इन तीनों समुद्र तटों में से सर्वाधिक प्रसिद्ध किनारा ‘लाइटहाउस’ है। इस समुद्री तट पर पहुंचना भी सरल है। यह केरल की राजधानी तिरुवनंतपुरम से सोलह किलोमीटर की दूरी पर है।

इसी स्थान पर 1498 ई. में वास्को द गामा आया था। ऐतिहासिक दंत कथाएं और रीति-रिवाज से भरा है यह स्थान। कप्पड़ में आयुर्वेदिक स्वास्थ्य केंद्र सुविधाओं की भी प्रसिद्धी है। कप्पड़ कोझीकोड से 14 कि.मी. की दूरी है।

केरल का एक अन्य समुद्री तट है, जो पर्यटकों के लिए आकर्षण का केन्द्र बना हुआ है, जहां बेकल का क़िला लंबे सुंदर नारियल के पेड़ों से घिरे दो द्वीपों के बीच में है। केरल में यह सबसे बड़ा व संरक्षित क़िला है। यह क़िला विभिन्न ताकतों जैसे विजयनगर साम्राज्य, टीपू सुल्तान तथा अंग्रेज़ी हुकूमत की कहानी कहता है। यह कोझीकोड से 160 किलोमीटर दूर है।

4). पूवर आइसलैंड

यह भी केरल की सुंदर जगहों में से एक है, यहाँ झील, नदी, समुद्र सबकी सुन्दरता देखने को मिलती है। यहाँ भी क्रुज के द्वारा आप प्रकति में विचरण कर सकते है। समुद्र तट पर गोल्डन रेत बीच को सुंदर बना देती है, बेकवाटर में क्रूज का मजा लेना बहुत सुहावना होता है. ऐसा लगता है, प्रकति ये यहाँ कोई जादू कर दिया है। यहाँ पर भी झील में बोटहाउस कॉटेज का मजा लिया जा सकता है, साथ ही झील के किनारे भी कॉटेज बने हुए रहते है, जिसमें भी आप रुक कर प्रकति के मजे ले सकते है।

5). कुमारकोम

कुमारकोम, कोट्टायम के पास में स्थित है. यह केरल का एक मुख्य आकर्षण में से एक है। यह 14 एकड़ का पक्षी अभयारण्य है, जहाँ तरह तरह की पक्षियों की प्रजाति पाई जाती है। यह प्रवासी पक्षीयों का पसंदीदा स्थान है. कुमारकोम भी एक शानदार बेकवाटर की जगह है और इसलिए आप एक नौका विहार की सवारी पर यहाँ जा सकते हैं। यहाँ आयुर्वेदिक स्पा की भी व्यवस्था है. जिसे लेकर लोगों को आत्मिक एवं मानसिक शांति मिलती है. यहाँ वेमबानाद लेक भी है, जिसे देखने लोग आते है। यह केरल का सबसे बड़ा लेक है, साथ ही ये भारत का सबसे लम्बा लेक है. इस लेक पर क्रुज से जाकर आप सूर्योदय या सूर्यास्त का मजा ले सकते है।

6). मुन्नार

दक्षिण भारत के केरल का सबसे प्रसिद्ध हिल स्टेशन मुन्नार है। मुन्नार में तीन नदियाँ कुण्डले, मुद्रपुज्हा एवं नाल्लाथान्नी का मिलन होता है. यह पश्चिमी घाट पर 1524 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। यहाँ 80 हजार मील के क्षेत्र में हरी चाय के बागान है, जो ऊँची पहाड़ी के ढाल में स्थित है। आप इन बागानों को देख बहुत अच्छा महसूस करेंगें. हरे भरे परिदृश्य, झरने, झील, जंगल और चाय बागान इस जगह को पृथ्वी पर एक स्वर्ग बनाते हैं. यहाँ आप पैराग्लाइडिंग, ट्रैकिंग और रॉक क्लाइम्बिंग जैसे एडवेंचर का भी मजा ले सकते है।

केरल का यह सुंदर पर्वतीय स्थल समुद्री तल से 915 मीटर की ऊंचाई पर है। पेरियार वन्यप्राणी उद्यान के रास्ते में पड़ता है। किसी समय में ट्रावनकोर के महाराजाओं का ग्रीष्मकालीन आवास गृह हुआ करता था। सड़क किनारे यहाँ चाय, कॉफी, इलायची, रबर व यूक्लिप्टस के बागान और साथ में प्राकृतिक घास के मैदान व घने जंगल मिलते हैं। यह स्थान कोट्टयम से 75 कि.मी. दूर है।

यह पर्वतीय स्थल केरल के उत्तर-पूर्वी भाग में समुद्र तल से 1300 मीटर ऊंचाई पर स्थित है। विथीरी कॉफी, चाय, इलायची, काली मिर्च व रबर के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। कोहरे से ढकी पहाडि़यां तथा विस्मयकारी दृश्य पर्यटकों को अपनी ओर आकर्षित करते हैं। कोझीकोड से 100 कि.मी. दूर है।

9). पोनमुडी

समुद्र स्तर से 915 मीटर ऊंचाई पर स्थित पोनमुडी एक संकीर्ण, घुमावदार रास्तों वाला पर्वतीय स्थल है। सुंदर पहाड़ी फूलों, विलक्षण तितलियों, छोटी-छोटी नदियों तथा झरनों के लिए प्रसिद्ध यह स्थान ट्रेकिंग के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। यह स्थल तिरुवनंतपुरम से 61 कि.मी. की दूरी पर है।

10). पेरियार

यह वन्यप्राणी उद्यान भारत के बड़े वन्य प्राणी उद्यानों में से एक है। पेरियार वन्यप्राणी उद्यान बाघ संरक्षण के लिए है। 777 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैले इस अभयारण्य की सुंदरता यहाँ के घने जंगल और 20 वर्ग किलोमीटर में फैली झील है। नौका विहार द्वारा इस वन्यप्राणी उद्यान को देख सकते हैं। हाथियों के झुंड यहाँ का आकर्षण हैं जो झील के पानी में उतर आते हैं। बाघ, सांभर, जंगली भैंसा, धब्बेदार हिरन, चीता, मालाबार गिलहरियां तथा धारीदार गर्दन वाला नेवला आदि भी यहाँ दिख्तें हैं। एक महत्त्वपूर्ण मसाला व्यापार केंद्र, कुमली भी पास में है। यह स्थान कोच्चि से 190 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर है।

11). कोलाम वाटर स्पोर्ट्स

मालाबार तट का प्राचीनतम बंदरगाह कोलाम कभी अंतर्राष्ट्रीय मसाला व्यापार केंद्र था। तिरुअनंतपुरम के उत्तर में इस ऐतिहासिक शहर का 30 प्रतिशत हिस्सा अस्थमुडी झील से घिरा है। कोलाम तथा अलाप्पुजा के बीच यह 8 घंटे का सफर सबसे लंबा तथा केरल के जलप्रपातों का मोहक अनुभव है। कोलाम तिरुअनंतपुरम से लगभग 72 किलोमीटर दूर है।

12). अलाप्पुजा

नौका दौड़, हाउसबोट, समुद्री किनारों, समुद्री उत्पाद तथा जूट उद्योगों के लिए प्रसिद्ध अलाप्पुजा को ‘पूरब का वेनिस’ भी कहा जाता है। केरल में कट्टानड़ ही शायद विश्व का ऐसा स्थान है जहां समुद्र तल से नीचे खेती की जाती है।

13). कुमाराकम

कोट्टयम से 12 किलोमीटर दूर यह तंबानड़ स्थल झील के किनारे स्थित है। इसे कट्टानड़ के जलप्रपातों का प्रवेश द्वार भी कहा जाता है। ‘कुमाराकम पक्षी उद्यान’ विश्व के प्रवासी पक्षियों का मनपसंद बसेरा है।

14). कोच्चि

केरल की व्यावसायिक तथा औद्योगिक राजधानी कोच्चि विश्व के बेहतरीन प्राकृतिक बंदरगाहों में से एक है। इस शहर में राष्ट्रमंडल का प्राचीनतम यहूदी प्रार्थना भवन तथा अनेक प्राचीन चर्च व मंदिर भी हैं। इस यहूदी प्रार्थना भवन के आस-पास जीउ टाऊन है जो मसाला व्यापार तथा कलाकृतियों की दुकानों का केंद्र है। इस सुंदर टापुओं वाले शहर में अरब, चीन, हालैंड, ब्रिटेन तथा पुर्तग़ाल के अनेक समुद्री यात्रियों का प्रभाव देखने को मिलता है। कोच्चि में घूमने का पूरा आनंद साधारण नौकाओं में बैठकर ही लिया जा सकता है। कोच्चि भारत के सभी शहरों से वायु, समुद्र तथा रेलवे लाइनों से पूरी तरह जुड़ा हुआ है।

केरल (State of India) दक्षिण भारत का सबसे प्रसिद्ध राज्य है। यह आदिगुरु शंकराचार्य की जन्मभूमि है। दक्षिण भारत के इस राज्य का नाम आजादी के पहले त्रावनकोर (Travancore) था।

लेकिन आजादी के बाद 1 जुलाई 1949 को त्रावनकोर का नाम परिवर्तित कर केरल ( Kerla ) रखा गया। अरव सागर के तट पर बसा केरल का प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य बड़ा ही अद्भुत है।

यहाँ भी असम और दार्जिलिंग की तरह दूर तक फैले चाय के बगान मन को आनंदित कर देती है। पहाड़ों, घाटी, समुद्र तटों, हिल स्टेशनों और हरे भरे मैदानों से अच्छादित यह राज्य पर्यटक को अपनी ओर खूब आकर्षित करती है।

सुंदर पहाड़, घने जंगल, गहरी दरिया, तथा दुर्लभ वन्यजीव इस राज्य को अलग पहचान दिलाती है। केरल की गिनती भारत के उन्नत राज्य में की जाती है।

अगम जल राशी लिए समुन्द्र तट पर बसा केरल प्राचीनकाल से ही मसालों के व्यपार के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। इस राज्य की गिनती साक्षर राज्य में की जाती है। केरल भारत का पहला राज्य है जहाँ साक्षरता दर 100% के करीव है।

केरल का इतिहास.

केरल का इतिहास काफी पुराना माना गया है। केरल का पुराना नाम केटलापूतो अथवा चेरस है। यह प्रदेश भी कई साम्राज्य और शासकों के उठापटक का गवाह रहा है।

यहाँ शासन करने वाले चेरा साम्राज्य को केरल के प्रथम साम्राज्य की संज्ञा दी जाती है। अति प्राचीन काल से ही केरल दुनियाँ में मशालों की खेती के लिए प्रसिद्ध रहा है।

मसालों के अत्यधिक पैदावार और निर्यात के कारण केरल ने विश्व के व्यापारियों को यहाँ आने के लिए आकर्षित किया।

फलतः मसालों के व्यापार के लिए 15 वी शताब्दी में सबसे पहले पुर्तगाली यहाँ आये। उसके बाद अंग्रेज, ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के माध्यम से केरल में व्यपार करने आये।

अंग्रेजों ने अपनी सूझ-बुझ से व्यपार करते-करते यहाँ के शासक बन गये। कलांतर में उन्होंने केरल सहित पूरे भारत पर अपना अधिकार कर लिया। भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम के दौरान केरल दो प्रांतीय राज्य त्रावणकोर और कोची थे।

बाद में इन दोनों को मिलकर थिरु-कोच्ची नामक राज्य का गठन किया गया। जैसा की आप जानते हैं की दक्षिण भारत के इस राज्य का आजादी पूर्व नाम त्रावनकोर (Travancore) था। लेकिन इसका नाम आजादी के बाद परिवर्तित कर केरल किया गया।

भारत का राज्य केरल का एरिया 38863 वर्ग किलोमीटर तक फैला है। केरल क्षेत्रफल की दृष्टिकोण से भारत  का 13 वां राज्य है। केरल की चौहद्दी में इसके उत्तर में कर्नाटक तथा दक्षिण में तमिलनाडु स्थित है।

From the renowned Kathakali to the folk dances, every art form in Kerala reflects the rhythmic impulse and rituals of the intellect sensitive people here. Religious and social history contributes to the origin of this performing arts thus making it an essential part of religious festivals and social events.

UNESCO declared Koodiyattam, an art form of Kerala as one among the masterpieces of oral and intangible heritage of humanity. It's for the first time in the history of UNESCO selecting an art form across the world and giving it recognition.

The main themes of these performing art forms are religious. Traditionally these art forms are performed during festivals and in social gatherings and temples. Some of these art forms are night long events. These art forms help in maintaining social interaction and bonding between people from different backgrounds.

There are classical art forms and folk art forms. Important classical art forms of Kerala include Kathakali and Chakyar Koothu. Kathakali is the spectacular art form of Kerala based on drama, music and dance.

Kerala Geography

With an area of 38,863 square kilometre Kerala’s coast runs 580 km in length and 35 -120 kilometre in width. A network of forty four rivers are seen in Kerala. Kerala is the one place with many diverse geographical features.

Eastern Kerala has lands bordered by western ghats and which include high mountains, beautiful valleys etc. Here the lands are covered either with dense forests or tea and coffee plantations. Forty one of Kerala’s forty four rivers originate in the eastern region.

West side of the mountain lies the midland plains with an area of land running along central Kerala. The lowest regions of midland plains host paddy fields and the elevated land slopes have rubber and fruit trees along with black pepper, tapioca and other crops.

The western ghat rises on an average elevation of 1500 meters above sea level and in certain areas the elevation is above 2500 meters. Kerala’s coastal belt is relatively flat with green paddy fields, coconut trees, a fine network of interconnected canals and rivers.

Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala in Alleppey district comprises more than 20% of India’s waterways by length. The backwaters, canals and rivers in Kuttanad made the coastal belt of Kerala rich with water.

Festivals of Kerala

Festivals are celebration time in Kerala. The festivals of Kerala are connected with local traditions and religions. Kerala is a land of many colorful festivals which have a history behind them. The diversity of the land reflects in festivals also.

There are so many different festivals in Kerala. In Kerala it’s the time to express the spirit of celebration. Festivals preserve the wonderful Kerala tradition and culture .

Festivals express the harmony of spirit. With so much fun and excitement, festivals are a time to come together with family and friends. Boat races, which is an important event in Kerala, originated as a religious event and gradually turned out to be a great social event.

Onam the state festival of Kerala is the biggest festival and it falls in the Malayalam month Chingam (between the periods August - September). Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. Onam is the one festival which is celebrated among all the communities.

Carnival of Onam lasts for 10 days. This is the festival where you can see the typical Kerala culture and tradition including pookkalam (decorated flower designs), delicious Sadhya, Kaikottikali (a dance form performed by women in sari), snake boat race etc.

Vallam Kali, the traditional boat race is one remarkable event in Kerala. It is the race of traditional boats. The Nehru Trophy boat race, boat race in Mannar, Aranmula and Thiruvanvandoor are some of the most important in the list. The excitement of the race attracts thousands of tourists every year. There are so many religious and local festivals in Kerala.

Vishu is another festival celebrated with great passion and spirit. Vishu is the astrological New Year day of Kerala. Bursting crackers is one exciting thing about Vishu. On this day all go to the temple.

The heart of this festival lies in the preparation of Vishu Kani, the divine offering consisting of arrangement of articles like raw rice, vegetables and so many other things in Pooja room along with the yellow Konna flower and the lighted bell metal lamp called Nilavilakku .

This arrangement was done the previous night. On the day of Vishu the first sight should be this Vishukkani. Vishu is celebrated in the month of April.

Thiruvathira, Thrikarthika, Ashtamirohini, Mahashivaratri and Navaratri are some of the Hindu festivals celebrated in Kerala.

Christian religious festivals like Christmas and Easter are also celebrated in a great way. These festivals are celebrated by Christians with great passion. In addition to this there are some local religious events conducted in churches in Mannar, Parumala etc. Maramon convention is one important Christian religious event in Kerala.

Muslim religious festivals like Bakrid, Id Ul Fitr, Miladi Sharif, and Muharram are celebrated by Muslims in Kerala. Chandanakudam at Beemapalli is another colourful Muslim festival in Kerala.

Although Kerala has pleasant weather throughout the year the best time to visit Kerala is September - March. Monsoon is also an ideal time to go for warm massages.

Currency in Kerala is Indian Rupee. Foreigners can bring unlimited foreign currency, money exchange in Kerala is not a big problem as there are so many exchange centres, but it will take some time.

The Ultimate KERALA Itinerary Guide 2021 – 7 Days / 14 Days / 24 Days Guide

Since the travel sector is slowly opening up, I decided to finally embark on a long-awaited trip to Kerala that was on my list for quite some time, taking all the safety precautions. If you want to read the post COVID-19 lockdown guidelines for Kerala, check THIS post out. After traveling in Kerala for about a month, I understand why this place is called “God’s own country”.

If the idea to explore Kerala has been on your mind too, I would highly recommend you to go for it. And to make the planning portion easier for you, here are three different kinds of suggested itineraries to cover most of the must-visit gems in the state that you’ll cherish forever.

7 day Kerala backpackers’ itinerary guide

Vagamon – Alleppey – Varkala

Day 1 – Land at Cochin airport. It will take you three hours to reach Vagamon from Cochin. Watch the sunset from Justin’s peak. Day 2 – Go for a sunrise trek to Ginamala or Moonmala. Roam around the hilly town to enjoy the grandeur of nature. Visit Marmala waterfalls in the afternoon. Also, you may do sunset paragliding if you want to indulge in some adventure. Day 3 – After an early breakfast, leave for Alleppey . After a three-hour journey, head to the floating bazaar for local food and shopping. Day 4 – Have breakfast and go for a 3-4 hour Shikara ride with Oscar cruise (personal recommendation). Have lunch at Taste of India. Head back to the city and go to Marari beach to chill. Roam around the beautiful city and yes, don’t miss the food (shappu meen curry, or Kerala Sadhya)! Day 5 – After breakfast, head towards Varkala . Walk around the cliff beach and enjoy the lit coastal street. Try cafes like Inda cafe or True Thomas. Day 6 – Try surfing in the morning. Chill by the beach/ hire a scooter and explore the small town of Varkala. Lunch at Babu farm (near the black sand beach) for garlic butter prawns. See the black sand beach, go shopping for junk jewelry, Itra, cork yoga mats etc. Have dinner at God’s own country kitchen. Day 7 – Have breakfast and head to Thiruvananthapuram airport to depart (1 hour away from Varkala).

14-day Kerala rejuvenation itinerary guide

Athirappilly – Vagamon – Varkala – Alleppey – Kochi

Day 1 – Arrive at Cochin airport, travel to Athirappilly for two hours. Spend the night in Athirappilly. Day 2 – Go to the falls in the morning for a beautiful view and then after lunch head to Vagamon (4 hours journey). Relax during the night and watch the starry skies. Day 3 – Go for a sunrise hike to Justin’s point and chill there for a while. Have lunch and head for an offroad experience or a sunrise trek to Moonmala or Ginamala. Day 4 – Chill in the morning and head to Marmala waterfalls. You can take a tour of the Uluppuni Tunnel. After lunch, go for a paragliding experience and watch the classic Vagamon sunset skies. Day 5 – Spend the morning walking through Murugan Hill before lunch. After lunch, head to Varkala (4.5 – 5 hours road journey). Visit God’s own country for dinner. Day 6 – Start your day in Varkala, with a yoga session by the beach, and have breakfast at Inda Cafe. Roam around the Varkala coastline and explore local shops. Day 7 – Go to Babu farm for breakfast and go to the black sand beach nearby. Next, hire a scooter and cover the insides of the town. Have food at Darjeeling cafe or bait and hook. Day 8 – Spend your morning on the bright sunny beaches of Varkala. Leave for Alleppey (3-hour journey) after an early lunch. Once you reach Alleppey, go to the floating bazaar or canal bazaar for a local dinner. Day 9 – Start your day with a light breakfast and taking a walk through the Marari beach. Go for a Shikara ride (lasts 3-4 hours) and go to Taste of India for a local food experience. Head back to the hotel/place of stay and relax by the beach sunsets of Alleppey.

Day 10 – Learn about the art of Kalaripayattu and go to Cafe Catamaran by the beach for lunch. Canal Bazar in Alleppey is a wonder and you should not miss it. Go there for food and shopping for spices, oils, decor items, etc, and have dinner at the Canal Bazaar with a local street food shop. Try what they suggest (I suggest crab roast or puttu kadala).

Day 11 – Head to Kochi after breakfast (1.5 hours drive). Take a ferry ride in Kochi and then head to Sri Muruga Cafe for a local style early dinner. Day 12 – Start your morning exploring the Chinese fishing nets of Kochi. For lunch, go to Jew town and visit the Paradesi synagogue or jew synagogue. Must have biryani at Kayees Rahmathullah cafe for lunch and go to fort house restaurant for a beautiful relaxing dinner with a view. Day 13 –  Take a beautiful sunrise walk by Cherai beach in the morning and then have some local breakfast. Head to princess market for shopping and lunch at Qissa Cafe. Explore Mattancherry Palace and St. Francis church or spend time by the marine drive. Day 14 – After breakfast, head to the Cochin airport and depart.

24 Day Ultimate Kerala Itinerary Guide

Kozhikode – Wayanad – Thrissur – Athirappilly – Munnar – Thekkady – Vagamon – Varkala – Alleppey – Kochi

Day 1 – 3: Kozhikode

Day 1 – Arrive at the Calicut International Airport and introduce yourself to the lively city of Kozhikode . Have lunch/ dinner at the popular S.M. (sweet meat) street. Day 2 – Go for a backwater ride in the morning and visit Lions’ Park. Head to the Kozhikode beach in the evening to hang out and enjoy the soothing sunset. Day 3 – Go to Kappad beach in the morning and then head towards Wayanad (3-hour drive).

Day 3 – 6: Wayanad

Day 3 – Arrive in Wayanad by the evening. Stargazing in Wayanad is one of the most amazing experiences of the little hilly town. Day 4 – Head to Wayanad tea gardens in the morning. Have lunch at the Clay Hut restaurant. Go to the Banasura dam before 4 p.m. to catch a view of the sunset. Don’t forget to shop for coffee beans and grab a local payasam. Day 5 – Start your day with a bamboo boating experience in Kuruva island (closes at 4 p.m.). Roam around the tea gardens and hike to the beautiful Chembra Peak. Day 6 – Rent cycles in the morning and bike along the Nilgiris. Post an early lunch, head towards Athirappilly (a 9-hour drive).

Day 6 – 8: Athirappilly

Day 6 – Reach Athirappilly by the night and relax through the evening. Day 7 – The main attraction in Athirappilly is the iconic Athirappilly waterfalls. You can also visit the Vazhachal waterfalls. Day 8 – Have a hearty breakfast and leave early for Munnar (a 4-hour drive).

Day 8 – 10: Munnar

Day 8 – Arrive at Munnar , a slightly colder town in Kerala. Visit Anayirankal/Mattupetty Dam and Lake. Day 9 – The tea capital of Kerala, Munnar, has a lot to offer when it comes to splendid vistas. Start your day with visiting the Munnar tea plantation and estate. After lunch, drive to the Top Station and Echo Point for a sunset view. Day 10 – Just before leaving for Thekkady, drive up to the Anamudi Peak. Start your journey to Thekkady after lunch. (a 3 hour drive)

Day 10 – 12: Thekkady

Day 10 – Arrive in Thekkady , a town that offers many green hikes and treks. Day 11 – Spend a day in Periyar National Park among the flora and fauna. (I suggest you to check whether the safari is open with the hotel/accommodation you have chosen for your stay.) Day 12 – Explore spice plantations and don’t forget to visit the Chellarkovil waterfalls. After lunch, leave for Vagamon. (a 2 hour drive)

Day 12 – 15: Vagamon

Day 12 – Arrive at Vagamon and don’t miss the night sky full of stars. I recommend to stay at Zostel Vagamon or Winter Vale Green Stay Resorts. Day 13 – Vagamon has hikes and viewpoints that offer some of the best sunrise experiences. Head for an afternoon hike/drive to Marmala Waterfalls, where you can cliff jump into a pool which is 30-40 ft deep. Spend your evening gawking at the beautiful falls among the lush green. You can also go for a sunset paragliding experience. Day 14 – Start your morning with breakfast and an optional off-roading experience with Zostel Vagamon. Trek up to the Ginamala or Moonmala trek. Day 15 – Have an early breakfast and say goodbye to Vagamon. Start your journey to Varkala. (a 4.5 hours drive)

Day 15 – 18: Varkala

Day 15 – Welcome to Varkala , the bohemian land of rejuvenation and delicious food. Once you reach Varkala in the evening, spend time by the Cliff beach. Don’t forget to have dinner at God’s Own Country. Day 16 – Start your morning early and rent out a scooty/bike. Ride through the coastal street of Varkala and enjoy the best of both worlds. I highly recommend going to @inda_cafe and @truethomas.in for wholesome meals, the first one for continental food and the second for Indian/Kerala cuisine. Continue your scooty ride to the Black Sand beach and bask in its serenity. Day 17 – Two must-have adventures await you in Varkala – surfing through the day and or a sunset backwaters ride at the Kappil beach. Day 18 – Go to North Cliff beach in the morning and walk along the boardwalk, filled with shops that sell antiques to itras and junk jewellery to hippie clothes. Leave from Varkala post lunch and head to Alleppey. (a 3 hr drive)

Day 18- 21: Alleppey

Day 18 – Arrive in Alleppey by the evening and relax at your accommodation. I stayed in a homestay called Lemon Dew which is right by the beach. You can also opt for a homestay which is next to the backwaters or closer to the boat jetty. Or a nice resort by the backwaters. Day 19 – Begin your journey in Alleppey with a Shikara ride. (lasts 3-4 hours) You may opt for @oscar_cruise for the same. Don’t forget to take a stop at Taste of India for some delectable local food. Spend your evening in the Canal Bazar or Floating Bazar for shopping and local experiences. Garlic Butter Prawns and Shappu Meen Curry should be dishes on your bucket list. Day 20 – Visit the serene town of Kumarakom for the bird sanctuary, backwater lakes and the unbeatable sunsets. Alternatively, you can opt for a Houseboat experience in Alleppey. Houseboats are beautiful from the inside, but they only sail through bigger channels of the backwaters, so you miss out on the smaller ones. But having said that, it is still very relaxing and enjoyable to be inside one and sailing in one of Kerala’s largest lakes called Vembanad lake. If you want to opt for an eco-friendly houseboat experience (a boat that runs on solar power as opposed to diesel), find Thara Eco Boat on booking.com or alternately contact @oscar_cruise ! Day 21 – Spend your morning chilling by the Marari beach. Leave for Kochi after lunch and shopping (a 1 hour journey).

Day 21 – 24: Kochi

Day 21 – Arrive in Kochi and head to Sri Muruga Cafe for a local style dinner. Day 22 – Start your day in the Jew Town of Kochi, that adorns the iconic art and culture of the state. Don’t forget to visit Paradesi Synagogue while in Jew Town. Day 23 – Take a walk to the Cherai Beach in the morning for a beautiful south sunrise. Spend some time by the iconic Chinese fishing nets of Kerala. A biryani meal at Kayees Ramathulla cafe is a must! Day 24 – Soak in the end of your trip through Kerala because it’s time to head back home!

5 reasons why Kerala deserves a place on every India itinerary

Locals call Kerala “God’s own country” for a reason. Down in India’s most southern state, tranquil backwaters give way to vibrant rainforests and tropical jungles, bursting with spice plantations and wildlife.

It’s a magical little paradise away from everything the usual set of guidebooks often associate with India and the north of the country.

Like many people travelling to India with a full-time job, I really had to pick and choose where I went to get the most out of a fairly short trip. Kerala was on my travel itinerary from the start, and here’s five reasons why it should be on yours too.

It’s completely unique to the rest of India

Tourist epicenters like Delhi and Jaipur often feel crowded and hectic, yet incredible in their own way. But they aren’t all that India has to offer. Taking a flight from India’s capital down to the state of Kerala only takes a few hours, but it truly feels like a night and day transition. Relaxation practically oozes out of the warm, tropical air, where the pace of life is slower and calmer.

Kochi is diverse in every sense, even down to the various religions practiced in India’s most southern state. In Fort Kochi (a must on your travel itinerary) you can see a Hindu Temple, a Church and a Synagogue all practically on the same street, all the while hearing a Muslim call to prayer from a nearby Mosque. You can also find traditional Chinese fishing nets and 16 th- century Portuguese houses from the colonial era, all adding to the cultural melting pot that is Kochi today.

Three must-visit places in Kerala, according to one of Intrepid’s amazing local leaders in India, Sana Jinah :

I recommend Kochi, Munnar and Varkala. Kochi for the history. Munnar for the peaceful vibes, mountains and tea plantations. And Varkala for amazing views of the sea from the cliff – it’s the only beach in India which is next to a cliff!

You’ll find the common Indian monkey everywhere in the small towns surrounding Periyar, but the park itself is home to many more species – including the illusive black monkey, recognizable from its golden brown or gingery mane.

Monkey business aside, Periyar is best known as a tiger reserve and one of the few places you can see Bengal tigers outside of captivity. Visit during the month of April to maximize the chance of seeing one.  Don’t worry about tiger attacks though – secure campsites are built into a deep tiger-proof trench.

I turned up at Periyar National Park woefully out of season in the depths of the monsoon and still managed to see black monkeys, water buffalo and the briefest glimpse of a figure running ahead of us – which my guide later said was a jaguar. Plan ahead and if you’re lucky you’ll see a tiger or an elephant in the way that nature intended.

The landscape is dreamy

Wake up on one of the long wooden houseboats that glide along the tranquil Kerala backwaters and you’ll think you’ve arrived in paradise. Much of Kerala’s appeal is its dramatic diversity, the way in which the low-lying tropical beaches and lakes meet the towering hills and tea plantations of the Western Ghats.

The main reason many travellers come to Kerala is, of course, to experience the famous backwaters. Essentially the backwaters are a complex chain of lakes and lagoons leading inland from the Malabar Coast. After a long few months travelling or a stressful period at work, I can’t think of anywhere else in the world I’d rather be.

Once used for transporting rice and spices around the state, the long wooden houseboats are now mostly for tourists – some even have onboard Jacuzzis and personal chefs. You can spend a few days traversing the maze of backwaters, or just a day as I did. Either way it will be an unforgettable experience.

Travel away from the coast for a few hours and you could be in a totally different country, given the steep change in scenery. I stayed in the aptly named Cardamom Hills, where the sweet and dreamlike scent of its namesake permeates the air. The idyllic growing conditions mean you’re likely to spot (or more likely smell) coffee, pepper or tea plantations on your ascent up the hills.

You’ll have the best meal of your life, three times a day

The real star of the show is the Kerala-style dosa, a paper-thin crepe about the length of your arm that can be loaded with coconut chutney, masala potatoes and a sour lentil and tamarind broth known as Sambar. This is traditionally served for breakfast, but you can find it all day long in one of Kerala’s many restaurants and homesteads. Kerala’s close connection to the Arabian Sea means that fresh fish is never off the menu. Try it fried up and served on a banana leaf with that omnipresent coconut chutney.

Lose yourself in a yoga retreat

Kerala is the spiritual home of Ayurveda, one of the world’s best-known forms of alternative medicine, which puts a heavy focus on yoga and meditation. Whether you’re a seasoned yogi or don’t know your dharma from your downward dog, there’s something for you.

The infectiously good vibes in India’s most Southern state mean you’ll probably be in a state of relaxation from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave, and there’s no better way to take advantage of that than yoga.

समुद्र पर झिलमिलाती नीली चमक (Kerala Blue Sparkle In India)

वर्ष 2019 की मलयालम हिट फिल्म 'कुंबलंगी नाइट्स' के एक खूबसूरत दृश्य में बैकवाटर को फ्लोरोसेंट नीली चमक में चमकते हुए दिखाया गया था। इस दृश्य में समुद्री चमक या बायोलुमिनसेंस नामक प्राकृतिक घटना को दर्शाया गया है। मार्च-अप्रैल के दौरान कोच्चि के पास समुद्र से सटे बैकवाटर में यह खूबसूरत नीले रंग की समुद्री चमक देखी जा सकती है। जैसे ही हवा से पानी में लहरें उठती है, यह प्राकृतिक घटना आश्चर्य और ज्यादा आकर्षित दिखाई देने लगता है।

केरल के इन हिस्सों में दिखेगा यह खूबसूरत नजारा

समुद्र की धाराओं से उठती यह खूबसूरत चमक केरल के कुंबलंगी, कल्लनचेरी, अंजिलीथारा, अट्टाथदम और कुलकादावु के दक्षिण-पश्चिमी क्षेत्र में देखी जा सकती है। अलग-अलग क्षेत्रों में ज्यादा मंत्रमुग्ध कर देने वाली छवियां देखी जा सकती हैं। हालांकि, मछुआरे समुद्र की चमक से खुश नहीं होते हैं। उनके लिए यह आम बात हो जाती है। क्योंकि जब समुद्र बैकवाटर के एक क्षेत्र को रोशन करता है, तो मछलियाँ बाहर चली जाती हैं, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप उन्हें पकड़ना मुश्किल हो जाता है।

साल में सिर्फ दो महिने ही दिखता है ये नजारा

समुद्र में यह खूबसूरत नजारा आपको वर्ष के हर महीने में देखना मुश्किल है। यह आपको सिर्फ और सिर्फ मार्च-अप्रैल के दौरान कोच्चि के पास समुद्र से सटे बैकवाटर में समुद्री चमक देखी जा सकती है। जैसे ही हवा पानी में लहरें पैदा करती है, यह प्राकृतिक घटना आश्चर्य और ज्यादा सुंदर दिखाई देने लगती है। चांदनी रात में यह नजारा और भी आकर्षक हो जाता है।

इस खुबसूरत घटना के पीछे है ये कारण

बायोलुमिनसेंस या समुद्री चमक को स्थानीय भाषा में 'कवारू' कहा जाता है। इस खूबसूरत घटना के पीछे कोई विशेष कारण नही है। इसके पीछे का कारण है सूक्ष्म जीव। बैक्टीरिया, कवक और शैवाल जैसे सूक्ष्म जीवों द्वारा उत्सर्जित प्रकाश इस प्राकृतिक घटना का निर्माण करता है। इसकी तुलना हजारों जुगनुओं द्वारा एक साथ उत्पन्न प्रकाश से की जा सकती है।

बारिश में बिल्कुल नहीं दिखता बायोलुमिनसेंस

सूक्ष्मजीव दूसरे जीवों को आकर्षित करने और शिकारियों से बचने के लिए प्रकाश उत्सर्जित करते हैं। बायोलुमिनसेंस को अक्सर समुद्र के करीब बैकवाटर में देखा जाता है। यह घटना गर्मियों में ज्यादा स्पष्ट होती है क्योंकि बैकवाटर का साल्टी नेचर और चिपचिपाहट बढ़ जाता है। जैसे-जैसे लवणता बढ़ती है, चमक ज्यादा साफ होती जाती है। बरसात के मौसम में बायोलुमिनेसेंस बहुत कम देखने को मिलता है। पिछले साल चेन्नई के निवासियों ने शहर के समुद्र तटों से बायोलुमिनसेंस देखा था। यह नजारा आपको रात को 11 बजे के बाद ही देखने को मिलता है।
