Activate adaptive cruise control

  • Add to quote

Hello all, I am not a Volvo owner but I rent cars frequently and I seek out the S60 - it's my favorite sedan and I pick it when it's available. This is the second time I've had one where I just can't get adaptive cruise control to work. I can activate regular cruise control, but when I try to press the left-right buttons to go into adaptive mode, nothing happens. The distance buttons are there on the wheel but they don't do anything either. Is there something I'm missing? Thanks!

^^ What they said. If the option for regular was enabled it will disable active/adaptive

I own a V60 without Adaptive CC (just normal CC) and the buttons are there on the wheel. They don't do anything. It required me a little bit of time to digest it...

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I am not seeing it in the settings, so I guess it's not equipped. I was under the impression that all Volvos had it standard now, but I guess I was incorrect. I have had several rental S60 T6s with ACC, and one T6 without it. This one is a T5 R-Design.

engine trim T5 T6 or bodytrim R-Design has nothing to do with that. As this is not rated as a safety option but rather convince (I personally agree) this is not standard equipped. The safety options like objects detection,BLIS is standard.

My wife’s S60 does not have the adaptive cruise control or pilot assist — her choice. Steering wheel buttons are the same in all SPA cars.

I can’t see why you wouldn’t do this (potential confusion between vehicles and also being 4rsed to develop) but it’s kind of a shame you can’t use the unused buttons for something else. A bit like the shortcut buttons on BMW that can be coded to pretty much anything.

I feel like Volvo was purposely generic about the button hieroglyphics, like the ACC distance button is a stack of bars, so that the owners who don't have the option aren't too offended. I have to say it worked on me, I don't feel like the option I don't have is staring me in the face all the time. Maybe that is better than the old "you were too cheap" button blanks.

Speaking of button blanks what is the blank on the far right of the rear defrost? There is a blank with an opening in it and it just confuses me.

Adaptive Cruise Control - reviews?

  • Add to quote

Has anyone specced their car with the adaptive cruise control? I wanted to hear real-life reviews on the v40 from members here. Is it easy to use on those slow moving motorways? (like heavy traffic of 40mph/65km/h) What about start-stop heavy traffic below 19mph/30kmh? The queue assist tech that comes with this newer generation of adaptive cruise control supposedly fixes this.. i was wondering if it really works or it would just annoy other motorists? (because of the system reaction time? or it leaves a too big gap? or it brakes suddenly, which protects you, but does not protect others from rear-ending you) Thanks!

I had this on a loaned V60 and it annoyed me. It is a clever piece of kit and you can adjust the distance to which it activates. The issue for me was the inconsistent driving from people who cannot maintain their speed. I then found myself doing what they were because of the system so turned the adaptive side of the cruise control off.

i have adaptive cruise control but the motorways i have been on, the traffic conditions so far have not allowed me to use it, and i guess in the forseeable future i still wont be able to use it, was probably a waste of money nowadays volvo 154

I have difficulties understanding these previous comments. In my experience, roughly 4000km now, it works absolutely perfectly. I use it all the time. Works OK also in city. If someone cuts in between, it adds distance smoothly. In city environment, when turning such angle that it loses the car in front, it does not speed up to set speed in the middle of turn. Only when you are going straight again. Brilliant! Also works in heavy snowing weather. Will never get a car without ACC anymore...

@twister- great to hear.. That's exactly what I'm hoping for when I specced the acc in the options list.. I travel quite often on motorways and its the 40mph crawl which gets to me the most..

ACC is simply brilliant IMHO, EXCEPT when on a steep climb, approaching a tightish bend with a very slow truck in the outside lane. ACC loses the car in front, picks up the truck in the next lane and brakes dramatically. Almost had 2 rear-enders in the first week until I learned to turn it off in that particular section of road. Can just imagine drivers behind muttering "bloody Volvo drivers" (great TV ad here a few years ago.) Everywhere else, use ACC always.

Acc is brilliant, I use it all the time. It is smooth and economical. When you get used to it you know when to touch the accelerator (this does not cancel the acc) to stop it braking. This is mainly when the car in front is turning off onto a slip road or if you are overtaking too slowly. Motorways are perfect for it, it makes driving more relaxing. I'm never going to get a car without it.

Just a quick question on ACC please folks. When the car is braking under ACC, I presume the brake lights are activated?

I actually really like it. It does make you anticipate your next move- just be careful pulling out from behind something when you have your minimum distance selected. Be prepared to override it with the accelerator to match the speed of the outer lanes. The other minor niggle I have is if you pull in from a lane of traffic in the outside lane to a clearer lane, as you suddenly start undertaking people! Other than this I think it's a great piece of kit and certainly makes the journey more relaxing.

You guys who are reporting great results from ACC are either very lucky or you haven't used it in the wide range of situation I have. Sure it works great SOMETIMES but it's so unpredictable that it scares my wife to death (as passenger), when it often fails to recognise that it is rapidly closing on a slower car in front. That coupled with it's propensity to brake unpredictably when not needed, makes the whole Volvo driving experience with ACC very 'interesting'. As mentioned by a previous poster, I hate to think what ACC is doing to damage the reputation of Volvo drivers. One day it was driving the car so erratically (as I was being followed by a Police car), that I expected to be pulled over and checked for alcohol and was already prepared to blame the Volvo ACC for it. I love using it and wouldn't be without it and agree with all the positive comments posted BUT it is so UNRELIABLE & UNPREDICTABLE, that you certainly should NEVER depend on it to work correctly.

I have used ACC and couldn't be happier. However, I don't use it on roads that have traffic lights and pedestrians. I use it on country roads and highways. The key is to predict what the ACC will do. If you are closing in on a slow moving car, you have to slightly press the gas pedal to prevent ACC from braking. The bigger the speed difference, the earlier and heavier it starts to brake. Also you shouldn't keep the cruise set too high because then, whenever the car computer/radar sees a stretch of clear road, it will floor it, and then starts to brake again when something is in front of you. The trick is to keep the ACC set to +5km/h (or +3 mph) above the speed of the traffic flow. Then the speed transitions are smooth. So in my opinion, ACC is working perfectly. Keeping constant distance to the car in front and slowing smoothly when needed. When it slows under certain speed the ACC will disengage with a sound alarm to notify the driver to take full control.

I think parvenu has it pretty much sorted. It's not perfect, it's not a substitute for driving awareness but it is ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT and a huge stress remover. There are plenty of times when it doesn't pick up what an observant driver does, learn to live with that and enjoy what it does do. I've just driven across London from inner East to outer West in the Friday evening rush hour, normally a total nightmare. Started before 5pm finished after 6pm, a 90-minute 25-mile journey that when quiet would take a fraction of that time. But overall I arrived relaxed, the ACC made what would in the past have been a horrible journey a quite bearable one. Plus the SatNav with RTTI enabled was keeping me up to date (rather too much to be honest!). I didn't vary my pre-planned and known route, despite a few suggested variations, as I know it has a lot of bail-out options as well as a number of known unavoidable hot-spots and long slow crawls. (Londoners will know the wonders of Shoreditch, Islington, Kings Cross, the Marylebone Road, Westway, Gypsy Corner, Hanger Lane, etc.)

After reading all the replies, i am finally convinced i did very wrong not to install it at the first place. I would gladly install it now and pay the overprice. Does anyone know if this is possible? I think it is, guessing that the system uses the city safety radar. It would only need a different set of knobes on the steering wheel and some kind of reprogramming. Am i wrong or very wrong?

You'd guess wrong, it has it's own radar in the front grille. No chance of a retrofit I'd think..... So, VERY VERY wrong I'm afraid.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

adaptive cruise control inbouwen volvo

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Adaptive cruise control *

P6-22w22-XC40nonBEV-Cam and radar principal

An adaptive cruise control can provide a more relaxing driving experience on long journeys on motorways and long straight main roads in smooth traffic flows.

The driver selects the desired speed and a time interval to the vehicle ahead. If the camera and radar unit detects a slower vehicle in front of the car, the speed is adapted automatically via the preset time interval to the vehicle ahead. When the road is clear again the car returns to the selected speed.

  • regulate the speed smoothly. In situations that demand sudden braking the driver must brake himself/herself. This applies in cases of large speed differences or if the vehicle in front brakes suddenly. Due to the limitations of the radar unit, braking may come unexpectedly or not at all.
  • follow the vehicle ahead in the same lane at a time interval set by the driver. If the radar unit cannot see any vehicle in front then the car will instead maintain the speed stored by the driver. This also takes place if the speed of the vehicle ahead increases and exceeds the stored speed.

Steep roads and/or heavy load

Bear in mind that the adaptive cruise control is primarily intended for use when driving on level road surfaces. The function may have difficulty in keeping the correct distance from the vehicle ahead when driving on steep downhill slopes – in which case, be extra attentive and ready to brake.

Do not use adaptive cruise control if the car has a heavy load or a trailer is connected to the car.

  • This is not a collision avoidance system. The driver is always responsible and must intervene if the system does not detect a vehicle ahead.
  • The function does not brake consistently for humans or animals, and neither for small vehicles such as bicycles and motorcycles. Nor for low trailers, oncoming, slow or stationary vehicles and objects.
  • Do not use the function in demanding situations, such as in city traffic, at junctions, on slippery surfaces, with a lot of water or slush on the road, in heavy rain/snow, in poor visibility, on winding roads or on slip roads.
  • The function is supplementary driver support intended to facilitate driving and make it safer – it cannot handle all situations in all traffic, weather and road conditions.
  • The driver is advised to read all sections in the Owner's Manual that relate to this function to learn about factors such as its limitations and what the driver should be aware of before using the system.
  • Driver support functions are not a substitute for the driver's attention and judgement. The driver is always responsible for ensuring the car is driven in a safe manner, at the appropriate speed, with an appropriate distance to other vehicles, and in accordance with current traffic rules and regulations.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
