Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

7. Phang Nga Bay

Phang Nga Bay is perhaps one of Thailand's most recognizable gems. Kayak around the green waters, admiring the sheer limestone karsts that jut dramatically out of the sea.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQI travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Thailand tour photos from our travellers, recommended tours, the best ways to pay for services in thailand.

Thailand's local currency is the Thai Baht. The best way to carry your money is in debit cards, withdrawing cash in local currencies from ATM machines. ATMs are found throughout Thailand and will generally accept cards on the Visa and Mastercard networks. It is a great idea to travel with both a Visa and Mastercard if at all possible in case of loss or problems with one card, you will have a back up. If you are bringing US Dollars, please make sure that the notes are new and in good condition. Notes older than 2003, or with any tears or blemishes may not be accepted. Be fussy with your bank when buying cash!

Tips on tips

Some reasonable suggestions on how to tip the staff

It is customary in Asia to tip service providers such as waiters, at approximately 10%, depending on the service.

Tour guides / Drivers

$ 1.5 to $ 3.5.

Recommendations for tipping drivers and local guides would range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person per day depending on the quality and length of the service

G Adventures CEO

$ 20 to $ 25.

The amount is entirely a personal preference, however as a guideline $20-25 USD per person, per week can be used.

Packing for Thailand

What you need to bring depends on the trip you have chosen and the countries or regions you are planning to visit. We suggest that you pack as lightly as possible as your are expected to carry your own luggage. As a rule we try not to have to walk more than 15-20 minutes with your bags which is why we recommend keeping the weight of your bags between 10-15kg/22-30lb. Suitcases are not recommended for G Adventures trips! Most travellers carry a backpack or rolling bag of small to medium size (no XXL ones please!) as they need to fit under the beds when travelling on sleeper trains. You will also need a day pack/bag to carry water, cameras and other electronics like iPods and mobile phones. If your trip involves overnights in homestays, villages or camping then you usually have the opportunity to rent sleeping bags if need be instead of bringing them with you.

The entire country of Thailand runs on 220-volt currents and uses five types of electrical outlets — type A, B, C, F and O. Type A: mainly used in North and Central America, China and Japan. This socket only works with plug A. Type B: like type A but with an extra prong for grounding. This socket also works with plug A. Type C: also known as the standard "Euro" plug. This socket also works with plug E and plug F. Type F: also known as "Schuko". This socket also works with plug C and plug E. Type O: this type is unique to Thailand but it also works with plug C, plug E and plug F.

  • Wear light, long-sleeved clothing to protect your skin from mosquitos and the scorching hot Thai sun. Pack an umbrella or a rain gear for monsoon season journeys (July to October).
  • Dress modestly outside beach areas, remove your shoes when entering temples or homes, and avoid touching locals on the head—Thailand has unique local customs.
  • Talk to your tour operator for specifics regarding your activities. Some activities may not be for the faint of hearts.
  • Keep away from the animals, especially monkeys. Do not feed them.

8 Adventures in Thailand You Need To Do

From rock climbing at Railay to the infamous Chiang Mai zipline, these are the best Thailand adventures for your next holiday!

thailand adventures

When it comes to Thailand adventures there are so many to choose from. Honestly, there aren’t many countries around the world so set up for adventure activities than Thailand. If you’re an adrenaline junkie (like me) then you’ll absolutely love it here.

As soon as you arrive in Bangkok you’ll start seeing all these tours and activities advertised all over the place. They’re everywhere from the airport to the streets of the Khaosan Road.

The vast and varied landscape means there are countless adventure activities in Thailand to try out. Every corner of the country has something exciting to offer which I absolutely love.

You’ve got the incredible southern coastline and islands, which is blessed with some of the world’s best beaches. This region is more than just a great place for beach bumming. It’s perfect for watersports, like sea kayaking which I did in beautiful Krabi.

adventures in thailand

Then there are the jungle-covered hills of the north, where you can go trekking and wildlife spotting. It was there that I went jungle trekking in Pai, which was one of my top Thailand adventures.

Add to all this the first-class food, interesting culture, natural beauty and hot weather and you have a pretty unbeatable destination. I mean, there’s a reason why Thailand is one of my favourite countries in the world!

With so many adventurous things to do in Thailand, I’ve put together this list of my top recommendations for fellow thrillseekers.

Whether you’re going all over the country or just visiting one part, find something here to inspire your travel plans.

If you’re heading to Bangkok then make sure you check out some of the best food tours in Bangkok to really experience the city! Also, these are some of the best Bangkok hotels for you too.

Best adventures in Thailand

Khao sok national park (and cheow lan lake).

khao sok national park

Khoa Sok National Park, a huge park in the Surat Thani province, is brimming with natural beauty. It’s filled with 160 million-year-old rainforest, waterfalls, wildlife and those karst mountains that always come to mind when you picture Thailand.

One of the reasons this is such a great spot for having a Thailand adventure that it’s so vast and varied. I managed to fit in a good handful of activities in just a few days: kayaking, hiking, swimming and exploring caves. I loved seeing the bamboo forest – some of the largest bamboo plants in Thailand grow there.

There are actually two parts to Khao Sok National Park, the second being Cheow Lan Lake. This is a man-made lake, about 65 km away from the main park. A long tail boat cruise on the emerald green water here is an experience not to miss and the perfect opportunity to spot some wildlife too.

One of the best ways of exploring Khoa Sok National Park is on a 2-day, 1-night tour . Then you get to stay in the national park itself and really get to see all it has to offer. This is the tour I did, though I would’ve perhaps been tempted to do a 3-day tour too!

Rock climbing at Railay and Tonsai

rock climbing railay

Railay and Tonsai, which are two neighbouring beaches, are a must-visit if you’re into rock climbing. It’s a real hotspot for the sport and the climbing here is renowned as one of the best adventurous things to do in Thailand.

Climbers from all over the world flock to the area for the 700 plus bolted routes on the awe-inspiring limestone cliffs. There’s a strong community feel, which is especially handy if you’re travelling solo – you’re pretty much guaranteed to find a climbing partner and make some friends along the way.

You’re really going to get the most out of a trip here if you’re a more experienced climber. However, there are plenty of walls for beginners and guides to help you conquer them, so I definitely don’t think anyone should be put off!

If you’re looking at doing a half-day trip rocking climbing at Railay then I’d r ecommend this tour where you have your own professional guide and all equipment. This really is one of the best adventurous things to do in Thailand!

Scuba diving at the Similan Islands

diving similan islands

When it comes to Thailand adventures, this one is right up there with the best.

I’ve been lucky to go diving in a fair few places in Thailand, but none of them beat the Similan Islands. This really is up there as the best dive spot in Thailand. These are a group of 11 islands in the Andaman Sea, which together make up an idyllic marine national park.

I took a liveaboard cruise from Khao Lak, which was incredible. You can also join tours from nearby Phuket or Ranong, for anything from one day to a whole week. There are speedboat tours if you don’t fancy a liveaboard cruise too.

We saw a magical range of sea animals, like manta rays, barracudas and so many schools of colourful fish. The coral reefs are equally impressive as the creatures that swim around them. The whale sharks were the stars of the show for me though – a bucket list item ticked off!

Don’t worry if you’ve never been scuba diving before. There are plenty of dive schools where you can get PADI qualified in this area. Just plan in enough time for the lessons. Alternatively, there are some snorkelling tours to choose from too. When it comes to water sports in Khao Lak, there are so many options here.

Bear in mind that the marine park is closed during rainy season too, which is May to November.

Flight of the Gibbon Experience

zipline chiang mai

Love ziplining? Love wildlife? If you answered yes and yes then you have to come here. The Flight of the Gibbon Experience really has become on of the top things to do in northern Thailand.

This is one of those activities that’s suitable for absolutely anyone who’s after an adventure. It doesn’t matter what age you are, how fit or what experience you have. Anyone can hop on a zipline and enjoy themselves.

The ziplines here take you through a forest canopy, which is where the gibbons hang out. They are most active in the mornings. Go as early as possible to catch the best look at them as you glide through the enchanting forest.

I went to the original course in Chiang Mai , but there’s now actually a second Flight of the Gibbon course. It’s in Pattaya, not far from Bangkok.

The Flight of the Gibbon experience really is one of the best adventures in Chiang Mai and I really can’t recommend it enough.

If you’re heading north, make sure you check out this amazing Chiang Mai itinerary with all the best things to do in the city. This guide includes some of my favourite activities like a Thai cooking course and visiting the local waterfalls, so it’s a good one.

Heading to Chaing Mai? Then make sure you bookmark my post all about the best day trips from Chiang Mai to help plan your trip here!

Jungle trekking in Pai

adventurous things to do in thailand

Travelling the relentlessly twisty road to Pai (there are over 700 turns!) is 100% worth it. This little town is surrounded by exceptionally beautiful countryside. Waterfalls, caves, rice terraces and, of course, jungle make up the scenery here.

There are some hiking trails directly from the town but lots more a little further afield, such as through the Soppong Jungle. You’ll easily find a tour or a guide that can take you out of town, if you’d rather not travel to trails and hike alone.

If you want to catch a sunset or sunrise, I would suggest heading to Pai Canyon . Unlike other trails, you’re above the treetops here and get awesome 360-degree views.

I visited in March, in between summer and winter, which is said to be the optimum time of the year to come trekking in Pai. I can vouch for the fact that it reaches a nice Goldilocks-esque ‘not too hot, not too cold’ temperature.

Muay Thai training camp

muay thai training camp

Not all of the adventurous things to do in Thailand are outside. You can have a go at Muay Thai year round, whatever the weather. And with training camps all over the country, you can do it wherever too.

Also called Thai boxing, Muay Thai is a martial art and the country’s national sport. As well as power and strength, there’s a lot of grace and fluidity to the sport. Unsurprisingly, it can be an intense workout too.

When I gave it a go, I only did a one-day session. This was a lot of fun but if you wanted to step it up a gear, there are loads of courses that last a week or longer.

If you don’t fancy actually jumping in the ring, watching a Muay Thai match could still be one of your Thailand activities to enjoy. You can just leave throwing punches to the pros!

If you’re up for it, you can go on a week long Muay Thai training cam p where you’ll really be put through your paces!

Pretty much all the Muay Thai boxing instructors are local Thais. For a real local’s experience, you can learn Thai with a language app – even knowing a few works of the lingo can really make a difference!

Sea kayaking at Ao Nang (Krabi)

thailand adventures

Although I’ve picked this as one of my top adventurous things to do in Thailand, I always think sea kayaking is kind of relaxing.

That’s especially true when you can gaze at the picture-perfect coastline around Ao Nang Bay. You get a great perspective on the cliffs, coves and mangroves as you paddle on the serene clear water.

Hire your kayak from one of the many rental places and paddle from Ao Nang to Railay or other nearby beaches. Or there are guided tours that hit some of the best spots.

My number one tip for sea kayaking in Ao Nang: beware of the heat. Avoid the hottest parts of the day or risk returning exhausted and sunburnt. I found out the hard way and had to rock the lobster look for a few days.

You can take a kayaking tour of Krabi and visit Thalane Bay paddling through the narrow channels cut through two towering complexes.

White water rafting in Chiang Mai

white water rafting chiang mai

I’ve saved one of the best until last! White water rafting is perfect for adrenaline junkies searching for Thailand activities. It’s the definition of an exhilarating experience.

Chiang Mai is an ideal spot for white water rafting because it’s in the nature-rich north, near the Mae Taeng river. Along the Mae Taeng, there are ample opportunities to hop in a raft and tumble through canyons, past waterfalls and beautiful surroundings.

If you’ve never been before, rapids are graded 1 to 5 based on how much of a whirlwind ride they provide. Chiang Mai has courses to suit every level. If you want to be eased in, start at 1 or 2 then work your way up when you feel confident.

I challenge even the most seasoned adventurers not to feel a bit of nervous anticipation when white water rafting in Chiang Mai. I know I certainly did! But that was firmly outweighed by the fun and thrill of it. For me, this really is one of the top Thailand adventures.

White water rafting in Chiang Mai really is such an incredible activity. On a tour you’ll take on the rapids of the Mae Taeng River with the jungles all around you. Such a rush!

Customer reviews & ratings

Jay Jay and Morgan were great tour guides! My husband and I requested private accommodations the first day of the tour (for a separate upgraded cost, of course) and they made those arrangements for us seamlessly. They also had numerous recommendations for food and activities on the days we had free time, which was very helpful. We loved this tour and enjoyed our time immensely!

The most amazing experience! Great itinerary with great accommodation included- the tour really did pack in so much into so little time- would definitely book another tour again!

Important notes

1.The Ultimate Thailand tour starts at 6pm on day 1 in Bangkok - airport transfer can be arranged for anytime of day as long as full flight details have been provided at least one week before the tour starts (arrival date, time & flight number). 2.The tour finishes on day 11 in Koh Phangan - there are no scheduled activities this day so customers are free to depart when they need to. 3. Return transfer is not included, however our group leaders will be more than happy to help arrange this on the ground. 4.When organising departing flights please be aware of the time it takes to travel from Koh Phangan back to Bangkok. We recommend to book returning flights the day after their tour finishes. Just ask for advice! 5.There is a single supplement available if you would prefer your own room but please note this is only applicable when staying in hotels and not in dorm rooms or overnight trains.

Packing List

You can bring or buy detergent to wash your clothes yourself. However, for your convenience, most places we visit will have laundry services available.

Make copies of your travel insurance contact information, passports, and credit cards (front and back). This is important just in case you lose any of these valuables along the way. Put a copy of your passport somewhere (in your backpack, etc.) in case your actual passport gets lost or stolen.

Packing your backpack can be a practice in patience, as it is going to be hard not to bring too much! You are going to want to buy things there too, so make sure that your pack is 75% full maximum. This will ensure that you have room to bring things home and that your pack isn’t too heavy. Also, you can try rolling your clothes to maximize space!

CLOTHING AND ESSENTIALS This will vary depending on which part of the year you are travelling to Thailand. ● Backpack – Try to leave your suitcases at home! We would recommend a 40-60l Bag. ● Passport - Essential! ● 3-5 shirts – Mixture of lightweight tank tops and t-shirts, plus one sweater or zip up for the plane as well as for the cooler mornings and evenings. ● 2-4 bottoms – Shorts, skirts, a warm pair of sweats or capris for the plane, jeans for cooler nights. ● An outfit appropriate for temple visits – A shirt that covers shoulders and pants/skirt that covers knees. ● Underwear – Choose at your discretion. ● A pair of socks – For the plane and any over air-conditioned buses or trains. ● Bathing suits – These are small, so you can bring lots … Maybe 3-6? ● Sunglasses – You can also buy cheap ones there. ● Daypack/purse ● Flip flops/sandals ● Running trainers – some days you will be out walking the whole day so best to have some comfortable shoes ● Cell Phone/A Digital Camera/GoPro - You are going to want to remember this trip and it’s a photogenic country! ● Chargers for any electronics and adapter plug

TOILETRIES ● Body wash, shampoo, conditioner – Try to bring smaller versions. Shampoo, soap and conditioner bars are a great alternative and can be brought in your hand luggage (granted they are dry) ● Body spray/deodorant ● Toothbrush and toothpaste ● Razors ● Bug Spray/Sunscreen/Aloe Vera - These items are hot commodities in Thailand because of the high demand, they can be quite pricey to purchase whilst there ● Condoms – If you feel you may need them, as brand selection may vary in other countries. ● Tampons/Sanitary towels – Bring a few boxes, very limited selection in shops. ● Hairbrush/comb ● Hat, head band, hair-ties, ● Any prescriptions you may be on ● Band Aids ● Ear plugs

OPTIONAL ● Travel pillow – Kind of a space hog, but it’s nice for the planes and longer travel days. You can purchase inflatable ones too ● Small towel – You may want a small beach towel as a lot of time will be spent relaxing in the sand, you can use a sarong bought there to lie on the beach as well! Micro-fibre travel towels are great for these trips as they pack up very small too. ● Tiny bag of detergent so you can wash your clothes yourself – Alternately, you can use local laundry services. ● Travel locks for your backpack ● Empty USB key – To download your pictures onto. *Ladies and stylish gents - we appreciate that you want to look good on tour (and for Instagram!) but we recommend leaving the blow dryers and straighteners at home if you can. It’s not really worth the hassle in such a hot climate! Some hostels do have hair dryers on request at the reception, so definitely do ask or ask your guide too.

Weight Limits

Please note you will be using public modes of transportation so keep your backpack weight limit to a minimum as you will be carrying this on and off yourself. Some stays may not have elevators either so you will be carrying this up and down stairs. We recommend no more than 18-20kg, this is also dependent to your airline and internal flights can have a limit of 15-18kg.

  • We recommend tipping the equivalent of $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and the equivalent of $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend the equivalent of $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the Thai baht in Thailand (plus the Cambodian riel on the tour extension).
  • On the tour extension in Cambodia, U.S. dollars are accepted everywhere, though change may be given in riel. Most hotels, restaurants, shops, taxis, buses, and airlines list their prices in U.S. dollars, but small transactions (less than a dollar) are usually conducted in riel. Always carry small amounts of riel for motorcycle taxis, snacks, and other small purchases.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit/bank cards and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most debit/credit cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • Inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the chat feature in the app.
  • Wifi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wifi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey in Thailand.
  • You will have a different Tour Director for your tour extension in Cambodia than on your main tour.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Thailand (and Cambodia on the tour extension) is 11 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 11pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.

Life is to be lived. Throw away boredom and enter a world of adventure filled with challenges and enjoyment!

How many times a year would we have the opportunity to gain new experiences adventuring close to nature? Go to new places. Do new things. Exciting things. Challenging things. Learn new skills and techniques. Make new friends. See the world in a different light.

In the past, adventure tourism in Thailand has only attracted a niche group of tourists because of the focus on heavy outdoor activities.

Travel was difficult and accommodation unsatisfying and, therefore, not suitable for people with low endurance or high expectations of comfort. However, the modern trend of “adventure tourism” is gaining popularity with both foreign, as well as domestic tourists because of the developments and adjustments of activities to make them more suitable for different groups and individuals. New hotels and other forms of accommodation, as well as new flight routes have been developed close to destinations making travel more convenient. The standardisation done by the responsible organisations also helps raise the level of management of the destinations, as well as the adventure tourism operators.

South to North - 15 days Tour

South to North - 15 days

Incredible Experience! I did the 15 Day North - South Thailand Tour with Jamie and Jonny as my group leaders and I genuinely couldn't have had a better time. The itinerary was perfect and fitted in so many amazing experiences that I wouldn't have even know about if I had travelled by myself. The trip ranged from the most chilled night in Khao Sok (which is gorgeous!) to fun filled nights out in Krabi, Phi Phi and Bangkok, snorkelling off of speed boats, vibey nights in jazz bars (Chang Mai), all rounded off with the most incredible and ethical elephant experience. There is literally something for everyone on this tour and I cannot recommend it enough! (For Jonny: please remember everything on this tour is optional) For me though, the best part of the trip was the people! I built some beautiful friendships, both with the other travellers and with Jamie and Jonny, who were the perfect group leaders. They were always there if needed (safety first), but got involved with everything and always felt like a friend, setting a wholesome vibe for the tour from the very first night. If I get the opportunity I will definitely go on more tours with Feel Free! P.s. If you're thinking of booking don't hesitate! and if you have any questions about any of the tours, Adam and Matt are insanely speedy at responding to questions on the websites chat function.

Thailand Island Hopper - 9 days

I did the 9 day Bangkok and the South Thailand tour and it was better than I could ever have imagined! Gabs, our tour leader was absolutely incredible. She clearly loves the country and her job and made the whole experience even better! She is made for her job and would love to go on a tour with her again! The tour itself was such good value for money, everything apart from the odd meal was included and that made it so much better in the trip not having to worry about paying for things. I just wish day 1 and day 9 of the tour we could do more in addition to it being arrival and departure days! I was unsure on going with this company that I hadn’t heard much about but I would highly recommend it to anyone!

It was a far out experience indeed! This tour is full of exciting places visited and offered a variety in the itinerary. To add icing on the cake, we were so pleased with our tour guide, Suchin Temo who was an active, up to date, informative and fun person to be around with, to say the least. He's innovative and caring and his experience and mastery of his job is what is exemplified the whole time we were with him. We won’t mind booking another tour with him as our guide as we never had a dull moment with him at all. Our driver was an added bonus as he was an expert on the area as well as a safe chauffeur too. Overall it was an AAAAAAA+++++++ Experience! We are among the satisfied customers of Intrepid!

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days Tour

Fantastic Circle of Thailand Tour - 10 Days

My partner and I have just returned from this truly wonderful tour of Thailand and overall our experience was overwhelmingly positive, however at one point I felt the entire trip was going to be soured by an awful experience we had at the elephant camp Chiang Mai. To anyone considering this tour with Legend Travel: enquire about the elephant sanctuary BEFORE you book. In Dec 2022 when we booked our tour, the itinerary listed the elephant sanctuary as what is listed now - a visit to “a small riverside elephant camp” with no ride and “a trip to the river where you will get to help the elephants take their morning bath”. This was going to be the highlight of our trip and an amazing experience to get up close with these wonderful and friendly animals. We had chosen this tour because we wanted to support ethical and responsible sanctuaries where the well-being and treatment of the elephants were the top priority. What we visited in Chiang Mai was so far from this. We witnessed the mistreatment of about 20 elephants, who were chained, subjected to the use of bullhooks to inflict pain and control them, elephants with open cuts from being hit by their handlers during the endless tourist rides, and elephants performing tricks for a hoard of tourists (football, painting, lifting tourists by their trunks). At one point, an elephant became too excited by the number of treats being fed to her by the tourists and stepped over a barrier log separating the viewing area and the showground resulting in her handler digging into her ear with his bullhook, causing her to shriek out in pain. I have attached photos. It was so far from the sanctuary we had been expecting to visit as per the itinerary. As soon as we returned to our bus, I immediately wrote to Legend Travel to explain what we had just visited and how it was so far from what was described. I was so appalled that our money had been used to benefit such an awful place. After a series of exchanges with Danny, I was brushed off and informed that the camp we visited was in line with the itinerary from our original booking in December 2022, which had since been updated in early 2023. No way! We had specifically booked this tour for the sanctuary visit and in any event, a review from January 2023 showcased a completely different camp, raising doubts about whether we were mistakenly directed to the wrong location or if our local guide had altered the plans without Legend Travel's knowledge. Initially I was thanked for my feedback and Legend Travel apologised for the “discrepancies and any confusion”. Following this my aim was to raise awareness among potential travellers regarding this distressing experience in Chiang Mai, hoping to spare others from the misleading impression that they would be visiting a rescue sanctuary, only to encounter conditions reminiscent of the camps the sanctuary elephants are rescued from. After a few days of back and forth, Legend Travel proposed a resolution: a small cash refund or a visit whilst in Phuket to the Elephant Jungle Sanctuary to “re-do” the experience. Given that this part of the itinerary was a key factor in our decision to book the tour, we opted to take the re-do and Legend Travel organised our visit to a lovely sanctuary in Phuket, where we fed the free-roaming elephants watermelon for breakfast, treated them to a mud bath and washed them off in the river afterwards. It was such an amazing experience - exactly what we had expected the visit in Chiang Mai to be and I am so grateful we got to experience this during our tour. I understand that mistakes can occur and sometimes when you trust local guides things can go wrong, however the harrowing experience at the first elephant camp was so awful I was shocked by the explanation that this could have potentially even formed part of an original itinerary. The resolution offered by Legend Travel was entirely appropriate and and our visit to the sanctuary in Phuket was handled very well. What could have left a sour taste in an otherwise fantastic tour of Thailand was rectified, and for that, we are appreciative. With regards to the other elements of our trip:
- We found the hotels good (they were not the hotels listed on the current itinerary as we were booked to stay in the hotels as per our original 2022 itinerary)
- Our guide in Bangkok, Ning, was lovely. She went out of her way to show us the authentic Thailand. She bought us local fruits to try, we visited a flower market and she taught us how to fold a lotus flower for the temple offerings, and she took us via train to the train market before visiting the Damnoensaduak floating market, which was such a fantastic experience. The train ran through the centre of the market!!
- Our guide in Chiang Mai, Dare, was very knowledgeable and was more than happy to amend our itinerary so that we visited the Doi Inthanon National Park rather than Chiang Rai and the Golden Circle which would have involved too much driving (8+ hours)
- Both our drivers in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were extremely safe and kept the bus clean, tidy, and topped with ice water for our return after a full day of sightseeing
- In Phuket we were left mainly to ourselves but the Phi Phi Island tour ran well, although hindered by rainy weather and choppy seas - which didn’t help with that morning’s breakfast…
- The timings of the internal flights were convenient (10:20am from Bangkok and 10:15am from Chiang Mai) so we didn’t waste the whole day travelling and sitting around at the airport

In summary, I would highly recommend this tour to other prospective travellers who have made it to this far in my review! However, I strongly advise you to check with Legend Travel regarding the elephant sanctuary component before finalising your plans. Additionally, we took the advice of another reviewer and flew home from Phuket International rather than return to Bangkok and fly from there. We were able to get outbound flights from LHR to Singapore and then onto Bangkok. If we were to have returned via Bangkok we would have backtracked through Bangkok and this saved us a lot of time during what is already a long travel day.

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package Tour

Thailand Highlights 10-Day Package

Our tour was named Encompassed Bangkok and Phuket. It was an excellent experience and guides are top notch. Our guide in Bangkok, Aurora, was so sweet and helpful. Our driver in Bangkok really took care of us as it was very hot and humid. He offered cold towels and lots of water after each stop. The driver in Phuket was less accommodating but our guide, Ben, was great. We had a small group so we were able to customize a few days when we were tired and wanted to cut short. The floating market was a great place and worth the drive. All the Temples are beautiful. The last full day in Phuket was really busy and could easily be cut in half to spend more time in historic Phuket and one temple. The cooking class was very authentic. I would have liked chairs while we prepped as it was a lot of standing (2.5 hours). Overall this is a great tour company; they’re very responsive anytime you need them and the guides were on time every where, we felt very taken care of and safe. I would definitely book with them again. 5 stars to Aurora and Ben !! Thank you for a wonderful experience.

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui Tour

Thailand Beaches: Bangkok to Ko Samui

Normally, when I travel somewhere, I enjoy playing the role of tour guide myself. However, having never been to SE Asia before, and not speaking the language (or even recognizing the alphabet), my wife and I opted for our first tour and hoped for the best. It turned out to be an excellent decision! Without a doubt, our tour guide and our fellow travelers added to our experience. We went to places we wouldn't have gone. We stayed in lodging we wouldn't have stayed. We did activities that we wouldn't have done. And we learned things that we wouldn't have learned. On a personal level, it was nice for me to just relax as someone else handled all the logistics regarding trains, boats, transfers, taxis, etc. Even so, there was plenty of downtime throughout the tour for us to do whatever we wanted -- (SCUBA dives, private dinner, wanders through the market). Given our positive experience, I expect that we will do other tours in the future!
